Latest / Hustle Rebels: Burnout Recovery for Over-Achievers / How to Enjoy Life Again When You're Used to Being Productive
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So next week I will be heading to Buffalo, New York to spend some time with my family before having surgery.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: And I've made the decision to actually be present while I'm out there instead of worrying about everything that I should be getting done.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: That word should.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Then comes November.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And I've made what actually feels like a pretty radical decision for me, and any probably overachiever, but I am going to take the entire fucking month off.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: No gigs, no scheduled commitments, no filling of every available space on my calendar with something productive.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Well, technically the first two weeks are reserved for my doctor recommended downtime while I recover from my surgery, but if you know me, you know damn well that once I start feeling better, I'm going to go stir crazy.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: But let me interrupt briefly to say this is the weekly recharge.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The part of Hustle Rebels where we get a little more intimate and I share something that I've been going through in my own life, the patterns I may have noticed, how I've worked through it, and what might resonate with you.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: If you like these types of conversations, hit the subscribe, like, and share buttons so you don't miss any more of them.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: It's also a weekly newsletter, so you can get it directly in your inbox with some other great goodies and resources.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So I'll leave the link for that below.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So I've decided that the rest of November is officially reserved for whatever the fuck Renee feels like doing.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: You know what's kind of wild about that?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: I don't even think I know what I enjoy anymore.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Not because there's nothing I enjoy, although that could be a part of it, but because I've spent so much of my time building things and working towards goals, navigating life's curveballs lately and figuring out what's next, that I haven't really stopped and asked myself what I actually want to do.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And I've realized that I've also had to have a reason to do something.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I've had to make money doing it, be productive, move me closer to the goal, or serve some kind of purpose, whether it be a gift or something.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: But what if I just did something for shits and giggles?
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Seriously.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: What if I just simply did something because I felt like doing it?
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Because it sounded fun or enjoyable or calming?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: For the pure joy of it?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: What if enjoying something was reason enough?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: What would I choose to do with an entire day if there was absolutely nothing else that I had to do?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And I genuinely don't know the answer to that right now.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It's been kind of a strange season of my life.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: A lot has changed, and frankly, so have I.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: So maybe some of the things that I used to love won't feel the same anymore.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll even rediscover some old hobbies or I'll find something completely new.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Or maybe I'll spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing and discover I like to do that too.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Who fucking knows?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But I think it's time to fall in love with the things that I enjoy again as the person that I am today.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Not who I used to be, or who I think I should be, just me in the season right now.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: So this week's practice is what do you want?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Here's something that I want you to think about while I'm away.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: If you had an entire day with absolutely no obligations, no expectations or guilt about how you would spend it, what would you actually want to do?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And if you can't answer that right now, maybe that's worth paying attention to, because somewhere between all the things that we have to do, it's pretty easy to lose touch with the things that we actually want to do.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And then this week on Hustle Rebels, meanwhile, while the weekly recharge is taking a little break, Hustle Rebels podcast isn't going anywhere.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I've got some great episodes coming over the next few weeks, including solo episodes and conversations with some incredible guests.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: I'm going to have Pam Voss join me and talk about people pleasing, boundaries, and what happens when you've spent so much time keeping everybody else happy that you've completely lost sight of what you want.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And then Lisa Chin and Vanessa Montero, co-founders of Pausing Out Loud, joined me to challenge our obsession with being busy, why slowing down feels so damn uncomfortable, and how to pursue your goals without sacrificing yourself in the process.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Plus, a few solo episodes digging deeper into patterns that keep us stuck.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And then in case you missed last week, I sat down with work navigation strategist Lene Brown to talk about navigating burnout, difficult bosses, and workplace expectations when quitting your job isn't exactly an option.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: We also get into setting boundaries, some more people pleasing, and how to stop letting your job consume your entire life.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Because your job gets a place in your life.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: It doesn't get the whole damn thing.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: So while my calendar might be empty, your podcast cue doesn't have to be.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Make sure you're subscribed to Hustle Rebels on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube so you don't miss what's coming up.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So just a little heads up again, the weekly recharge will be taking a few weeks off while I recover, spend some time with my family, and give myself a little bit of room to exist without a schedule.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: I'll be back in December, hopefully rested, recovered, and with a few stories about what happens when I give myself permission to just do whatever the hell I want to do.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Until then, take care of yourselves and maybe give yourself a little bit of permission to do just something you might enjoy as well.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: You don't have to earn your free time by being productive first.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: See you guys next time.
