- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Teresa of Avila, October 15 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, Saint Teresa was born at Avila in Spain. From her earliest childhood she ardently desired to die a martyr. At the age of 18 she entered the convent of Saint Mary of Mount Carmel and consecrated herself to Christ whom she chose for her spouse.
- 0:49Her heart was so inflamed with divine love that she wrote, How the enraptured soul feels in this body its captivity in the misery of life. It considers itself a slave sold in a foreign land and what is most bitter is to see everywhere men's passionate love for this life and so few banished ones who sigh like this soul and pray for the end of their exile. Counseled by Jesus, she made the difficult vow of always doing what she judged most perfect. By prayer she attained the highest degree of mystical life, and there found such enlightenment on divine things that her works earned for her from Pope Gregory the fifteenth and Urban the seventh the August title of doctor of the church, had been given to no other woman. The best prayer, she wrote, and which is most pleasing to God, is that which brings on improvement, showing itself in good works, and not the enjoyment which only serves for our own satisfaction.
- 2:20The influence of this humble Virgin who converted thousands of souls manifestly proves the supreme importance of the contemplative life addressing itself directly as it does to God, the author of all good. She died of divine love on October 4 in the year of our Lord 1582. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit.
- 3:07Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Joyful are the thoughts that well up from my heart, a king's honor for my theme. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity.
- 3:48Therefore thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. The Collect. Let us pray. Graciously hear us, O God our Savior, and grant that as we rejoice in the festival of blessed Teresa, thy Virgin, so we may be nourished by her heavenly teaching, and grow in loving devotion towards thee. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 4:35Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, he who boasts should make his boast in the Lord. It is the man whom God accredits, not the man who takes credit to himself that proves himself to be true metal. If you would only bear with my vanity for a little, pray, be patient with me.
- 5:09After all, my jealousy on your behalf is the jealousy of God himself. I have betrothed you to Christ so that no other but he should claim you, his bride without spot. The gradual, with thy comeliness and thy beauty, set out, proceed prosperously, and take thy crown because of truth and meekness and justice. And thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Alleluia.
- 5:52Alleluia. After her shall virgins be brought to the king. They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew.
- 6:13At that time, Jesus told his disciples this parable. The kingdom of heaven will be like 10 virgins who went to bring the bridegroom and his bride home taking their lamps with them. Five of these were foolish and five were wise. The five foolish, when they took their lamps, did not provide themselves with oil. But those who were wise took oil in the vessels they carried, as well as the lamps.
- 6:47The bridegroom was long in coming so that they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. And at midnight, the cry was raised. Behold, the bridegroom is on his way. Go out to meet him. Thereupon all these virgins awoke and fell to trimming their lamps.
- 7:11And now the foolish one said to the wise, share your oil with us. Our lamps are burning low. But the wise ones answered, how, if there is not enough for us and for you, better that you should find your way to the merchants, and buy for yourselves. And so while they were away buying it, the bridegroom came, and those who stood ready escorted him to the wedding, and the door was shut. Afterwards, those other virgins came with the cry, Lord, Lord, open to us.
- 7:56And he answered, believe me, I do not recognize you. Watch therefore for you know neither the day nor the hour. The offertory. The daughters of kings do the honor. At thy right hand stands the queen in a vesture of gold, all hung about with embroidery.
- 8:30THE SECRET. May this sacrifice of thy dedicated people be accepted by thee, O Lord, in honor of thy saints, to whose merits we attribute the help afforded us in tribulation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface.
- 9:09Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 10:11Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Five wise virgins took oil in the vessels they carried, as well as their lamps. At midnight, the cry was raised. Behold, the bridegroom is on his way.
- 10:34Go out to meet Christ, the Lord. The post communion. Let us pray. Thou hast filled thy household, O Lord, with heavenly gifts. Do thou cherish us always through the intercession of her whose festival we are keeping through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 11:14Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God. Saint Teresa of Avila, pray for us.
