- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is a guide on the
- 0:30side, how to have joyful spiritual conversations at
- 0:34work.
- 0:35I'm curious, when you pick up your phone,
- 0:39how many notifications do you have?
- 0:42I have an iPhone, so there's this thing
- 0:44called the Notifications Center, where when I swipe
- 0:47down from the bottom of my phone, it's
- 0:51got this list of notifications that I haven't
- 0:53tapped on yet.
- 0:53So, I thought I'd just go through and
- 0:55see what mine are today.
- 0:57I've got one from TaskRabbit, which is an
- 1:00app I use to hire somebody to help
- 1:01me move a piano recently.
- 1:03I've got one from Google Maps.
- 1:05I've got several from podcasts, different podcast episodes
- 1:08that I've downloaded.
- 1:10A couple from Wonder Health, which is a
- 1:12weight loss app I attempted to start using
- 1:14and have not kept up with.
- 1:16A couple from BePresent, which is an app
- 1:18that I use to shut down other apps
- 1:19in an attempt to use my phone less.
- 1:21And then several from Reminders, which is just
- 1:24the app where I have specific reminders for
- 1:26myself.
- 1:27I wonder what your notifications list looks like.
- 1:31With phone notifications, I'm reminded of, I don't
- 1:34know if you've ever been in a classroom
- 1:35with little kids, and you ask a question,
- 1:38and then all these hands shoot up in
- 1:39the air, and kids are like, pick me,
- 1:41pick me, pick me!
- 1:42And that's kind of how I imagine the
- 1:43notifications on our phone.
- 1:44The phone notifications are like, pick me, pay
- 1:46attention to me, I'm what matters, blablabla.
- 1:50And it's really fascinating.
- 1:51We live in what many people have called
- 1:54the attention economy, where these powerful corporate interests
- 1:59have fine-tuned a way of getting your
- 2:03attention, and the way they do it is
- 2:05through a device that you tend to carry
- 2:07around with you all the time.
- 2:09That's kind of scary when you think about
- 2:11it, because is our attention something that should
- 2:15be so influenced by corporate interests?
- 2:18Is our attention something that we should just
- 2:20cede control of to the notifications on our
- 2:24phone?
- 2:25I like to call my phone a distraction
- 2:27box, because that's so often how it functions
- 2:30in my life.
- 2:30I'm trying to do one thing, and then
- 2:32I pick up my distraction box, and I
- 2:34get distracted.
- 2:35I get thrown off track, and I'm doing
- 2:39something else instead.
- 2:40My attention has been diverted.
- 2:43And as we're in this series about how
- 2:45to help our friends who do not yet
- 2:47know Jesus, attention is really important.
- 2:52Attention is actually the starting place for evangelism.
- 2:58When we think about evangelism, we tend to
- 3:00think about conversations, and that's even what we've
- 3:02emphasized in the title of the series, how
- 3:04to have joyful, spiritual conversations.
- 3:07But before you can have a conversation with
- 3:10someone, you have to notice them.
- 3:12You have to pay attention to them.
- 3:14And so attention comes before evangelism.
- 3:19Attention comes before any kind of helpful or
- 3:23joyful or meaningful conversation we could have.
- 3:27The question is, how are we attending to
- 3:29other people around us?
- 3:31And as we turn to scripture, we'll find
- 3:33that attention is actually right at the center
- 3:36of our life with God.
- 3:38Our way of attending to God and our
- 3:42way of attending to other people are connected.
- 3:45So I want to look at a couple
- 3:46of scripture passages that look at that and
- 3:48a couple of helpful thinkers who have reflected
- 3:51on scripture and the idea of attention and
- 3:53how it relates to other people.
- 3:54And then I want to get really practical
- 3:55and suggest some ways to help us engage
- 3:58attention as a kind of skill.
- 4:01Okay, so attention, it is a skill, but
- 4:04it's more than a skill.
- 4:05It's what I would call a way of
- 4:07being in the world.
- 4:08And we see this in scripture.
- 4:10So, for example, in Psalm 16, verse 8,
- 4:14David writes, Wow.
- 4:30What would it be like to go through
- 4:32your day having set the Lord always before
- 4:37you?
- 4:38This is talking about where is your heart
- 4:40looking?
- 4:42Where is your heart resting?
- 4:45Where are you attending?
- 4:47Are you aware of the presence of God
- 4:50right there with you?
- 4:51Because he is at my right hand, I
- 4:54shall not be shaken.
- 4:56And that is the effect of that kind
- 4:58of approach to life, that way of being
- 5:01in the world.
- 5:01When we learn to attend to God and
- 5:04to his gracious and loving and holy presence
- 5:07with us right there, it turns out we
- 5:10are not shaken.
- 5:11We experience deeper peace.
- 5:14We have a capacity to navigate the challenges
- 5:16of life that's qualitatively different than when we
- 5:19don't attend to the presence of God with
- 5:21us.
- 5:23Okay, but this kind of attentiveness, this attentiveness
- 5:27to God also draws us to our Jesus
- 5:32is continually connecting love of God and love
- 5:34of neighbor in his teachings.
- 5:36And one place where he does this is
- 5:39in the gospel of Luke chapter 10, where
- 5:42he's specifically illustrating the connection between love of
- 5:45God and love of neighbor.
- 5:46So I'm going to read it.
- 5:48It's a little bit of a longer section,
- 5:49kind of interrupt myself as we go.
- 5:51But starting in verse 25, Okay,
- 6:22so pause there.
- 6:23There's this question about how does eternal life
- 6:26work?
- 6:27What's our part of eternal life?
- 6:29How do we engage the gracious gift of
- 6:32eternal life from God?
- 6:35And Jesus kind of turns the question around.
- 6:37He's like, well, what do you say?
- 6:38And the man says, well, I guess it
- 6:40comes down to loving God and loving neighbor.
- 6:41And Jesus says, that's right.
- 6:43That's how you live an eternal kind of
- 6:45life is by loving God and loving neighbor.
- 6:47They're connected.
- 6:49Our love for God and I would say
- 6:51our attention to God is intimately bound up
- 6:55with our love for neighbor, our attention to
- 6:58neighbor.
- 7:00But then the lawyer is like, okay, but
- 7:02who's my neighbor, right?
- 7:03Who are we talking about here?
- 7:04And then Jesus's answer to that is this
- 7:06famous story.
- 7:07So I'll read the story.
- 7:09Jesus replied, a man was going down from
- 7:12Jerusalem to Jericho and he fell among robbers
- 7:15who stripped him and beat him and departed,
- 7:17leaving him half dead.
- 7:18Now, by chance, a priest was going down
- 7:20that road.
- 7:21And when he saw him, he passed by
- 7:23on the other side.
- 7:24So likewise, a Levite, when he came to
- 7:26the place and saw him passed by on
- 7:28the other side.
- 7:30But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to
- 7:32where he was.
- 7:33And when he saw him, he had compassion.
- 7:36He went to him and bound up his
- 7:38wounds, pouring on oil and wine.
- 7:41Then he set him on his own animal
- 7:43and brought him to an inn and took
- 7:44care of him.
- 7:46And the next day he took out two
- 7:47denarii and gave them to the innkeeper saying,
- 7:49take care of him.
- 7:50And whatever more you spend, I will repay
- 7:52you when I come back.
- 7:54Which of the three do you think proved
- 7:56to be a neighbor to the man who
- 7:58fell among the robbers?
- 7:59He said, the one who showed him mercy.
- 8:01And Jesus said to him, you go and
- 8:04do likewise.
- 8:07Okay, this is such a beautiful passage here.
- 8:11There's so many layers, but I want to
- 8:14look at just a couple turns of phrase,
- 8:16right?
- 8:17So did you notice how the priest and
- 8:19the Levite responded?
- 8:20They saw the man lying on the side
- 8:23of the road, right?
- 8:24They saw him.
- 8:25They at least noticed him, but they did
- 8:28not engage further.
- 8:29They passed by on the other side.
- 8:32Contrast this with the Samaritan.
- 8:33The Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where
- 8:35he was.
- 8:36And when he saw him, he had compassion.
- 8:40So the Samaritan, the first thing is he
- 8:42saw this man.
- 8:43He noticed him.
- 8:44He paid attention.
- 8:45And then out of that attention, he moved
- 8:48into action.
- 8:49He was able to love him.
- 8:52Then Jesus, when he's kind of bringing this
- 8:54back around to the questioner, the lawyer, he's
- 8:56like, okay, who is a neighbor, right?
- 8:58And the lawyer, again, good at giving the
- 9:00right answer, right?
- 9:01Says the one who showed him mercy.
- 9:04And so the lawyer, at least intellectually, is
- 9:07understanding, oh, that's what I'm supposed to do.
- 9:10I'm not supposed to ask who is my
- 9:11neighbor.
- 9:12I'm supposed to be a neighbor to anybody
- 9:14that I might come across.
- 9:16I'm supposed to notice them.
- 9:17And then as I notice them, I'm supposed
- 9:19to move into action, a merciful action to
- 9:22love them and take care of their needs.
- 9:23And then Jesus affirms that and says, yeah,
- 9:25that's your part of entering into eternal life.
- 9:28You go and do likewise.
- 9:31Wow.
- 9:32Okay.
- 9:34So we can't move into having mercy on
- 9:37people.
- 9:38We can't move into helping meet people's practical
- 9:40needs.
- 9:40We can't move into even having good conversations
- 9:43with people unless we see them first.
- 9:46We see them, we notice them, and then
- 9:50we respond.
- 9:52Now, another thing that's compelling about this passage,
- 9:55I think, is that this was not on
- 9:57the agenda of the Samaritan, right?
- 10:00The Samaritan had his own journey, right?
- 10:02He had places to go, things to do.
- 10:05He did not have a scheduled plan for
- 10:07doing mercy ministry.
- 10:09He just happened to come across this man
- 10:12who needed help.
- 10:14And so he rearranged his journey, right?
- 10:17He took him to an inn.
- 10:18He took care of him.
- 10:19He spent all night there.
- 10:20The next day, he gives money to the
- 10:22innkeeper saying, take care of him.
- 10:24I will repay you when I come back,
- 10:25right?
- 10:25So that clearly this guy has somewhere to
- 10:27go.
- 10:27He's got to go back to his original
- 10:29responsibilities, but he was willing to interrupt things
- 10:32and rearrange them because of this man who
- 10:34he just noticed as he went along.
- 10:38This is an illustration of attention as a
- 10:41way of being in the world.
- 10:43If we think about evangelism as just something
- 10:46we do sometimes, like we're going to pick
- 10:48a time and go do evangelism, that's not
- 10:51necessarily a bad thing, but that's not what
- 10:53Scripture is describing here, right?
- 10:55Evangelism is what comes out of being attentive
- 10:59to God and to other people all of
- 11:02the time.
- 11:04I've said the Lord always before me, because
- 11:05he is at my right hand, I shall
- 11:08not be shaken.
- 11:09That's an all the time thing.
- 11:10It's a way of being in the world.
- 11:12And then as we go through the world,
- 11:14like the Samaritan, we have our eyes open
- 11:17to the people around us, people who we
- 11:20can love.
- 11:21So I want to draw on a couple
- 11:23of writers who have been helpful for me
- 11:26in thinking about this.
- 11:27One of them, just a really brief quote,
- 11:29Leighton Ford from his wonderful book, The Attentive
- 11:32Life.
- 11:33He comments on this passage of the Good
- 11:35Samaritan specifically.
- 11:58Isn't that beautiful?
- 12:00We're paying attention to others, but we're also
- 12:02paying attention to God because he's the one
- 12:04who's going to supply what we need when
- 12:06there's that interruption to our agenda, when it's
- 12:08unscheduled attentiveness, unscheduled evangelism.
- 12:13Okay, another helpful book, The Nine Arts of
- 12:16Spiritual Conversations by Mary Schaller and John Curley.
- 12:19This is actually the same title as a
- 12:22course called The Nine Arts of Spiritual Conversations,
- 12:24which is actually one of the courses I
- 12:25teach through Mission Central at churches sometimes.
- 12:28So if you'd be interested in that, let
- 12:29me know.
- 12:29From the book here, they're talking about nine
- 12:33arts of spiritual conversations, and the first art
- 12:35is noticing.
- 12:37So they write, a precursor of knowing someone
- 12:40is noticing them.
- 12:44Relational interaction has the same starting point for
- 12:46all of us, simply in noticing another person.
- 12:51Noticing is not only a first step in
- 12:53becoming aware of another person, but also in
- 12:56paying attention to God's activity in your world.
- 12:59You see there again how they're tying together,
- 13:01we're fostering, noticing, we notice other people, and
- 13:05we notice what God is doing, right?
- 13:07As we become noticers, as we become attentive
- 13:09people, we're picking up on what God is
- 13:12doing as we love other people.
- 13:15Okay, they cite some examples of Jesus doing
- 13:18this in scripture.
- 13:19When Jesus noticed people, it was good news
- 13:21for them.
- 13:23When we notice people, it should be good
- 13:25news for them too.
- 13:26Because people matter to God, they should matter
- 13:28to us.
- 13:29Giving people the gift of our time and
- 13:31attention demonstrates their value to us as a
- 13:34treasure of God.
- 13:36When we notice people, we assign worth to
- 13:38them as image bearers of the Most High
- 13:41God.
- 13:42Our noticing says, you are worthy of attention
- 13:45from me and from God.
- 13:48Isn't that beautiful?
- 13:50You are worthy of attention from me and
- 13:53from God.
- 13:56Okay, on that theme of like the worthiness
- 13:58of the people around us, as we think
- 14:01about how we're paying attention to other people,
- 14:03it really does come down to what is
- 14:06our conviction about the people around us?
- 14:08Do we think that some people matter and
- 14:10others don't?
- 14:11Do we think that we only need to
- 14:13pay attention to people if they're part of
- 14:14our agenda or our idea of what matters?
- 14:18Or does every single human being matter, even
- 14:21when they're unexpected?
- 14:23Does every single person deserve our attention?
- 14:28Again, we're limited human beings.
- 14:30We can't always give long sustained attention to
- 14:32everyone.
- 14:33But as we're practicing that attention to God,
- 14:36he'll show us the people, oh, we need
- 14:38to pay attention right now.
- 14:40Here's the person right in front of me.
- 14:42And so we need an imagination to be
- 14:45sanctified so that we can see how valuable
- 14:49and precious the people around us really are.
- 14:52And one writer who I think really helps
- 14:55with that imagination aspect of looking at the
- 14:57world is C.S. Lewis.
- 14:59So I want to read from his essay,
- 15:00originally a sermon, actually, The Weight of Glory.
- 15:04And he talks about this, about how are
- 15:05we thinking about the people around us?
- 15:08And it's just, it's so evocative, his turns
- 15:11of phrase.
- 15:11So I just want to read it, right?
- 15:13And he's been talking about the idea of
- 15:15glory and how we have potential for glory
- 15:17in the future because of God's grace.
- 15:18You know, we don't want that to go
- 15:20to our head.
- 15:21So he says, it may be possible for
- 15:25each to think too much of his own
- 15:26potential glory hereafter.
- 15:28It is hardly possible for him to think
- 15:31too often or too deeply about that of
- 15:34his neighbor.
- 15:35The load or weight or burden of my
- 15:38neighbor's glory should be laid daily on my
- 15:41back, a load so heavy that only humility
- 15:44can carry it and the backs of the
- 15:46proud will be broken.
- 15:48It is a serious thing to live in
- 15:50a society of possible gods and goddesses, to
- 15:54remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person
- 15:56you talk to may one day be a
- 15:58creature which if you saw it now, you
- 16:00would be strongly tempted to worship or else
- 16:03a horror and a corruption such as you
- 16:05now meet, if at all, only in a
- 16:07nightmare.
- 16:08All day long, we are in some degree
- 16:10helping each other to one or other of
- 16:14these destinations.
- 16:16And a little further down, he says, next
- 16:18to the blessed sacrament itself, your neighbor is
- 16:22the holiest object presented to your senses.
- 16:26Isn't that incredible to ponder?
- 16:30The people around you, they have this potential
- 16:33for glory that one day they could be
- 16:35luminous creatures so resplendent we would be tempted
- 16:38to worship them.
- 16:40Or they might be horrors, shadows and shells
- 16:47of humans are meant to be.
- 16:49That's where all of us are headed one
- 16:51way or the other, more and more glorious
- 16:53by God's grace or less and less human,
- 16:57less and less what image bearers of God
- 17:00were meant to be.
- 17:02And if we take people seriously in that
- 17:04way, we will pay attention to them.
- 17:07Next to the blessed sacrament itself, your neighbor
- 17:09is the holiest object presented to your senses.
- 17:13And in case you're not familiar, blessed sacrament
- 17:15is a way of referring to the Eucharist.
- 17:16So Christ's presence in the Eucharist, the idea
- 17:19that when we receive the bread and wine
- 17:21of communion, Christ is present there.
- 17:22So that's holy.
- 17:24We receive that with reverence.
- 17:27And C.S. Lewis is saying, do you
- 17:28have that kind of reverence for the people
- 17:30around you?
- 17:32Because they're filled with potential for glory.
- 17:38God needs to bless our imagination so we
- 17:40can look at people like this.
- 17:42And as we look at people like this,
- 17:45we will find there are opportunities for speaking
- 17:50with them, for having a conversation with them,
- 17:53for like the Good Samaritan, moving from attention
- 17:55into action.
- 17:57So a couple of thoughts about how to
- 17:59develop that kind of skill.
- 18:01Again, this is much greater than a skill.
- 18:02It's a way of being in the world.
- 18:03It's an approach to all of life.
- 18:04It's a manifestation of how we inhabit God
- 18:07and how God inhabits us and how that
- 18:09turns our hearts towards other people.
- 18:11But just a couple more skill ideas here
- 18:14at the end.
- 18:15One is what some leaders have called arrow
- 18:18prayers.
- 18:19So when you see somebody maybe at the
- 18:20grocery store or you're like stopped at a
- 18:22traffic light and you notice them, right?
- 18:24You just, you happen to notice them.
- 18:25Because you're practicing this habit of noticing, right?
- 18:28To just pray a really quick prayer for
- 18:29them.
- 18:30Like God bless that person, right?
- 18:32Sometimes because I don't know their name, I'll
- 18:33just say, God bless the man or God
- 18:36bless the woman.
- 18:37God bless the child, right?
- 18:39And just shoot up a quick arrow prayer
- 18:41for them.
- 18:41Sometimes you can tell something that's going on
- 18:43for somebody else.
- 18:44You can tell they're anxious or whatever.
- 18:45So you can pray, God, I pray that
- 18:46they would find your peace, right?
- 18:48Just quick arrow prayer.
- 18:50That's a skill you can develop.
- 18:52Okay, here's another thing.
- 18:54When you have an interaction with somebody, pray
- 18:57for them after the interaction.
- 18:59So this is something I found like after
- 19:01parties or whatever.
- 19:02I tend to be very gregarious at parties.
- 19:03I talk with lots of different people, right?
- 19:04Maybe you're more like you find one person
- 19:06in the corner and talk with them the
- 19:07whole time.
- 19:08Okay, either way, when you get in your
- 19:10car and you're driving home, pray for the
- 19:13people you just hung out with, right?
- 19:15Lift up to God in prayer, the people
- 19:18you just had the chance to interact with.
- 19:20This practice will kind of turn your heart
- 19:23to be aware of, oh, it's not just
- 19:25about me in that person.
- 19:26It's me in that person and the presence
- 19:28of God.
- 19:28And then the next time you interact with
- 19:30them, you're going to have that awareness of
- 19:33prayerful attention, kind of suffusing your interaction with
- 19:37them, knitting your attention to other people together
- 19:40with your attention with God as time goes
- 19:42on.
- 19:43Okay, so those are just a couple practical
- 19:45suggestions.
- 19:46Arrow prayer and prayer after to help us
- 19:49develop in this skill of attentiveness.
- 19:51But most of all, we need God's grace.
- 19:54We need God's grace to change us into
- 19:56the kind of people who are attentive to
- 19:57him and to others all day long.
- 20:02Lord Jesus, thank you that you pay attention
- 20:04to us, that you were the attentive one,
- 20:07that you always were able to stop and
- 20:10to pivot, to be interrupted, to see and
- 20:13to love the person in front of you.
- 20:15And we want to follow you.
- 20:17We want to be like you in that
- 20:18respect.
- 20:19So send your Holy Spirit on our minds,
- 20:22on our eyes, that we would think of
- 20:25people as beautiful, as full of potential for
- 20:30glory, as precious, and that we would see
- 20:35them and attend to them well.
- 20:38Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 20:40do our work with you.
- 20:41Amen.
- 20:45Thanks for listening.
