- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good morning, this is Brenda, and I'm back with another review.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Today we are going to be reviewing The Fog from 1980.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: This was John Carpenter's film that came right after Halloween.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: It stars three of my favorite actresses, Jamie Lee Curtis, her mother Janet Lee, and also Adrienne Barbeau, who was married to John Carpenter at one time.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: We all know Jamie Lee Curtis from quite a few of the Halloween movies, and she was also in Prom Knight and Terror Train.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: This was actually the first of two movies made with Jamie Lee Curtis and her mother Janet Lee, the second being Halloween H2O that came out in 1998.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: If you're too young to know who Janet Lee is, she is famous for the shower scene and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, and she was also married to actor Tony Curtis.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: This movie starts with one of my favorite quotes by Edgar Allan Poe, is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Then we see an old sea captain-looking man who is telling a story around a campfire to children, saying it's 11.55 p.m., it's five minutes to midnight, and we have time for one more story.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: We learn that this is a story of revenge that started 100 years ago when Captain Blake was looking for a place to build a leper colony.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: He has gold on that ship and the town's founding fathers want it.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: The founding fathers built fires on the beach and lured the ship into the rocks, sinking the ship and killing everybody aboard so they could get the gold to build a church.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Janet Lee plays Kathy Williams, who is the mayor of the town, and they are planning a 100-year celebration.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: There's a lot going on in the very beginning.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: We have earthquake-like shaking, a gas pump handle drops and leaks, they show a car lift going up and down on its own, horns honking, lights coming on, a TV's coming on with static, and all the payphones are ringing.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Jamie Lee is out hitchhiking and gets picked up, the window shatter in the truck.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: She ends up latching onto this guy, sleeps with him, and stays with him the rest of the movie.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So now Antonio Bay is about to have its 100th birthday party.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Adrien Barbot plays Stevie Wayne, who owns the lighthouse slash radio station.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: So she's one of the first ones who can actually see the fog that's rolling in and has a weather guy that gives her reports from time to time.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Stevie is able to see the fog.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: She notices that it is moving against the wind.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Stevie has a son who is out playing one day on the beach and he sees a gold coin, but it turns into a piece of driftwood that he brings home.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Stevie takes this piece of wood with her to work one day.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It originally said the word Dane, but as time goes on and she's not really paying attention, it starts to leak water and starts to say six must die.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Six being the number of Blake and his crew.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: The pastor found a journal in the wall of the church documenting how it all went down 100 years ago.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So he knows that Blake has come back after the gold coins.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: The journal was his grandfather's father, Patrick Malone, and he said that the leprosy was a vile disease and that the sins were hid in the walls.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Blake and his men are able to move within the fog.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And as the fog rolls in, this is how the killing spree begins.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: They first kill everybody on a little fishing boat.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: The men within the fog kill the weatherman, and the fog begins to take out power and phone lines.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Stevie's son Andy is being babysat, and that poor old woman gets herself killed.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I remember when I saw this movie as a young child, I thought they were actual pirates in the fog.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And they do kind of have that look, especially with the hook.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: They start coming into the church and the radio station, and the coins had been melted into a big cross.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: The cross is given to Blake and his men, and the pastor originally wonders why they didn't take him, but they do come back and kill him in the end.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Let's see how many wine glasses this movie gets.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: On the eerie scale, it gets a full wine glass.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: It's very eerie.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: The fog, the darkness, love it.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: The environment gets a full wine glass.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Love the lighthouse, love the seaside.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Of course, evil gets a wine glass.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Blake and his men in the fog rolling in, killing people.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Very evil.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Empathy?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Eh.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: I worried about Andy, but he didn't get killed.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: So the old woman babysitter, she gets herself killed.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I'll give it half a wine glass.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And entertaining, some people might not agree with me.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I did have someone write on my YouTube channel in the comments that it's a very underrated movie, and I agree with that, but it's also one that reminds me of my childhood that I watched over and over again when it was in constant rotation on cable.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: So wine glass, that means the fog gets four and a half wine glasses.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I'm going to switch up next week's movie.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: We usually pull the movie from the Brenda's Horror Movie Review mug, and we did.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: It's going to be Hellraiser 1987 the week after next.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: But next week I'm going to go ahead and do the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: I took losing Tim Curry pretty hard, so I kind of want to do this in his honor.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: If you listen to the Let's Wine with Brendan Stacy's podcast, she did a little tribute to Dolly Parton.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And it's funny that we're best friends, but we're so different.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Yet we lost two of our favorite icons within hours of each other, from what I'm reading.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So next week's gonna be my little tribute to Tim Curry, and we are gonna review the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So until then.
