- 0:12Speaker 3: We got down on the same page and continued to
- 0:15Speaker 3: be on the same page.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Davante Smith said that we need to be on the
- 0:19Speaker 1: same page. He wasn't the only one that's said a.

- 0:25Speaker 1: Birds podcast and brought to you by the Fanatics Sportsbook

- 0:34Speaker 1: be tonight for Phillies and Dodgers game number two. You
- 0:38Speaker 1: can listen to the game here on ninety seven three ESPN.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Let's bring in Jeff Moscher from the Inside the Birds
- 0:44Speaker 1: podcast and of course Philly Voice who covers the Eagles.
- 0:47Speaker 1: He is with us right now for today's edition of
- 0:50Speaker 1: Football at four and so many places we can start.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Jeff Moscher, It's a seventeen to three game in the
- 0:55Speaker 1: fourth quarter. That's a game set match last year for
- 0:58Speaker 1: this team, right that game is Oh why can they
- 1:01Speaker 1: not finish that game out?
- 1:05Speaker 3: Oh?
- 1:05Speaker 4: Man, that's a good why couldn't they finish the game
- 1:07Speaker 4: out well? Because they they didn't have the killer instinct.
- 1:11Speaker 4: They couldn't hit on obviously, you know, not hitting on.
- 1:13Speaker 2: That deep point of AJ Brown that's been much discussed,
- 1:18Speaker 2: which really could have put some distance on the scoreboard
- 1:21Speaker 2: and changed the way the Broncos had to play offensively.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Would have helped them, but they have not.
- 1:28Speaker 4: To me, you know, it goes back to again, they're
- 1:30Speaker 4: not running the ball the same way they did last year,
- 1:32Speaker 4: and this time they really didn't seem to want to
- 1:34Speaker 4: try to.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Run the ball.
- 1:37Speaker 4: So you can say it's not lack for want of
- 1:39Speaker 4: killer instinct, it was a lack of execution of killer instinct, right.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I mean, well, let's look at that, because they ran
- 1:47Speaker 1: the ball decent. I mean, you had six carries for
- 1:49Speaker 1: thirty yards. That's five yards of carry right there. That's
- 1:52Speaker 1: pretty good for Saquon Barkley. Now you had the one
- 1:54Speaker 1: big run that obviously kind of propelled everything there. So
- 1:57Speaker 1: that cloud's the thing there. But they just got away
- 2:00Speaker 1: from it. They didn't do it at all. Is this
- 2:02Speaker 1: they thought that the way to beat Denver was through
- 2:04Speaker 1: the air. Did they acquiesce to AJ Brown and everything?
- 2:07Speaker 1: That happened last week. You're up seventeen to three, perfect
- 2:11Speaker 1: opportunity to use your weapon that, by the way, you
- 2:13Speaker 1: gave a contract extension to in Saquon Barkley.
- 2:17Speaker 4: What happened, you know, probably became a victim of their
- 2:21Speaker 4: own success a little bit.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I mean, Jalen Hurts was thirteen of nineteen.
- 2:26Speaker 4: In the first half one hundred and thirty eight yards,
- 2:28Speaker 4: put a touchdown on the board, and then they came
- 2:31Speaker 4: out in the third quarter and got the second touchdown.
- 2:34Speaker 4: So they were throwing the ball well decently.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Well, I mean, they've always.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Been, as we know, a hot and cold offense, but
- 2:42Speaker 4: they were running their RPO game, their pop pass game,
- 2:45Speaker 4: getting the one on ones, and for the most part,
- 2:47Speaker 4: they were able to connect on them. And I think
- 2:50Speaker 4: that they just maybe haunted by some games of the past,
- 2:54Speaker 4: wanted to make sure that they didn't just start running
- 2:57Speaker 4: the ball conservatively. Remember we criticized them in the games
- 3:00Speaker 4: where they were blowing leads for just running on every
- 3:02Speaker 4: first down, and they probably felt that they had some
- 3:05Speaker 4: matchups that they could take advantage of. And that is
- 3:08Speaker 4: I think some of that is true, and I think
- 3:10Speaker 4: some of that's true that the Broncos played a variety
- 3:14Speaker 4: of defenses, and listen, I'm.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Not beating my tooting my own horn here.
- 3:21Speaker 4: I picked the Broncos to win the game because I
- 3:23Speaker 4: felt that they could do one thing that a lot
- 3:25Speaker 4: of teams can't do, which is they could rush Jalen
- 3:28Speaker 4: Hurts in a way that would keep them in the pocket.
- 3:31Speaker 4: They're very good at that. I did a whole story
- 3:33Speaker 4: about that on Philly Voice last year. Last week I
- 3:36Speaker 4: talked to you about it. They know what they're doing
- 3:38Speaker 4: on how to rush passers who are mobile quarterbacks, and
- 3:42Speaker 4: in the third quarter specifically, they did a couple of
- 3:44Speaker 4: things with spy defenders and just keeping Jalen inside and
- 3:48Speaker 4: making it tough for him to find lanes and receivers.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Jeff Bosher Football four from the Inside of the Birds
- 3:54Speaker 1: podcast and Philly Voice, He's got a lot of observations
- 3:57Speaker 1: on this game. We played the audio from Devonte Smith
- 4:01Speaker 1: saying that we're not on the same page. He wasn't
- 4:03Speaker 1: the only one that said that, though Dallas Goddard and
- 4:05Speaker 1: everybody else seemingly had some way of saying we're not
- 4:08Speaker 1: on the same page. What does that mean to you?
- 4:11Speaker 4: Well, I don't think they've really been on the same
- 4:13Speaker 4: page a whole lot. It's just that the quotes always
- 4:15Speaker 4: sound different after a loss than a win. You know,
- 4:18Speaker 4: there has been times after a win this year and
- 4:21Speaker 4: in years past where the players have told you that
- 4:24Speaker 4: they need to get better and get on the same
- 4:27Speaker 4: page and do things. But then that's usually but hey,
- 4:29Speaker 4: we won, we did this, we did that, and they
- 4:31Speaker 4: because they lost, it becomes more magnified. Same page is
- 4:37Speaker 4: a difficult thing for me, Mike. It's the same offense,
- 4:39Speaker 4: the same receivers. Obviously, it's a new play callerybody's calling
- 4:43Speaker 4: the same kind of plays that they've been doing the
- 4:45Speaker 4: last few years.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So what is it?
- 4:46Speaker 4: I don't know what it tells you overall, When every
- 4:49Speaker 4: year there's a couple of games where the offensive players
- 4:52Speaker 4: say that they're not on the same page, I think
- 4:54Speaker 4: that tells you a lot about just what they are
- 4:56Speaker 4: offensively in general.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Right, I mean, and it's funny that you hear we're
- 5:01Speaker 1: out on the same page, and that yesterday you see
- 5:03Speaker 1: a game where you throw the ball thirty eight times.
- 5:05Speaker 1: DeVante Smith has maybe his best game of the season.
- 5:07Speaker 1: You know, the receivers both got a ton of targets
- 5:10Speaker 1: in the game. So if they throw the ball thirty
- 5:13Speaker 1: eight times, you did try to get your two best weapons,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you know, your two wide receiving weapons involved in the game.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Is it concerning that you only end up with seventeen
- 5:23Speaker 1: points with this level of talent and you can't figure
- 5:26Speaker 1: out a way to get more scoring in the second
- 5:29Speaker 1: half of the game when you featured those two guys.
- 5:33Speaker 1: By the way, Smith had ten targets at eight catches.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Brown had eight targetsy at five catches.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of funny.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Today is the continuation of the Kevin Batulo is the
- 5:44Speaker 4: village idiot oc day? According to you know, social media
- 5:47Speaker 4: and angry fans. But Jalen Hurts had his most passing yards,
- 5:52Speaker 4: his most efficient passing game for the most part of
- 5:55Speaker 4: the year. It's just that it just hasn't been very
- 5:57Speaker 4: efficient or crisp. So I don't know what the resolution is.
- 6:02Speaker 4: I just I think, yeah, they obviously played a very
- 6:04Speaker 4: good defense. The Broncos we talked about this last week
- 6:07Speaker 4: are really really good and this exact same kind of
- 6:10Speaker 4: plan and effort against a different team may have yielded
- 6:13Speaker 4: more results. But we also can't bury our heads in this.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I mean, it's been five weeks now that the Eagles
- 6:19Speaker 4: offense has not played a full game, a full quarter
- 6:23Speaker 4: or a full four quarter game, and I'm sure that
- 6:26Speaker 4: that's very frustrating for them.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You wrote over at Philly Voice, sometimes it's good to
- 6:31Speaker 1: play two conservative. You got to open this thing up.
- 6:35Speaker 1: We saw we're talking about the amount of passes. What
- 6:38Speaker 1: do you mean by sometimes it's good to be conservative,
- 6:40Speaker 1: because it seemed that Denver was saying be conservative. We'll
- 6:44Speaker 1: let you. Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 4: No, that was the whole paragraph was sort of tongue
- 6:49Speaker 4: in cheek. It was about it was about the two
- 6:52Speaker 4: times against the Rams that they ran the ball on
- 6:56Speaker 4: third and fifteen and everybody was very upset. They were
- 6:59Speaker 4: backed up their own end zone and they just handed
- 7:01Speaker 4: off to Saquon on.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Third and fifteen. One was third and fifteen.
- 7:05Speaker 4: One was third and eighteen and they got nothing from it.
- 7:08Speaker 4: But in they faced the exact same scenario against the Broncos,
- 7:11Speaker 4: who I'm sure thought by the defense, especially that they played,
- 7:15Speaker 4: that the Eagles were just going to sit there and
- 7:17Speaker 4: hand the ball off to Saquon Barkley and instead they
- 7:21Speaker 4: get Jalen Hurts going deep to DeVante Smith for fifty
- 7:24Speaker 4: two yards, the biggest play in the game. So I
- 7:27Speaker 4: think part of that is, yes, you were conservative, and
- 7:30Speaker 4: it hurt you in one game, but it helped you
- 7:31Speaker 4: set up a play for down the road or a
- 7:34Speaker 4: philosophy that your opponent didn't expect for down the road.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I would you know contend too, that you have a
- 7:40Speaker 1: seventeen to three lead, it's okay to be conservative, you know.
- 7:43Speaker 1: If that's what you ran the clockout last year in
- 7:47Speaker 1: that game and the fourth quarter seventeen to three, that
- 7:49Speaker 1: game was over, right, that game was over.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I just I don't call that conservative because for what
- 7:54Speaker 4: you just said, last year, the Eagles second half running
- 7:57Speaker 4: game was the most prolific offense all of football, whether
- 8:01Speaker 4: it's offense rushing, deep, you know, passing, because Saquon Barkley
- 8:04Speaker 4: had about some crazy sixty five percent of his rushing
- 8:07Speaker 4: yards were in the second.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Half last year. So that's a weapon.
- 8:11Speaker 4: So I'm not I don't think that at seventeen three
- 8:13Speaker 4: it is certainly not enough in the third quarter to
- 8:15Speaker 4: start saying we've won the game, what's run the ball.
- 8:17Speaker 4: But when you have Saquon Barkley and you have the
- 8:20Speaker 4: ability to hit some home runs. It seemed a little
- 8:23Speaker 4: strange that he didn't get a carry from midway through
- 8:26Speaker 4: the first quarter until early in the fourth quarter, and
- 8:29Speaker 4: there were a lot of three and outs in between.
- 8:31Speaker 1: There your read on some of the shots they took
- 8:34Speaker 1: down the field. Everyone's talking about the AJ Brown. It
- 8:36Speaker 1: looks like he stopped. Did he stop because he couldn't
- 8:38Speaker 1: see the ball, couldn't track it. Did he just give
- 8:40Speaker 1: up on the play? There's that play, there's the goddard play.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I mean, he had some some throws to be made
- 8:46Speaker 1: that were not on the mark, and these are throws
- 8:49Speaker 1: that where you're saying, man, in any NFL you got
- 8:53Speaker 1: that much separation, you gotta connect.
- 8:56Speaker 3: You do.
- 8:57Speaker 4: There were a couple of different plays that were left
- 8:58Speaker 4: out on the field, and honestly, I thought one of
- 9:02Speaker 4: the two didn't really hurt them in the grand scheme.
- 9:04Speaker 3: But Jalen Hurts taking two sacks on.
- 9:07Speaker 4: His own by running out of bounds behind the sticks
- 9:09Speaker 4: when he could have just thrown the ball out of bounds.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Because receivers were there in the vicinity.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Seems silly, you know, for a quarterback who's been doing
- 9:17Speaker 4: this as long as he's been doing it. But to
- 9:20Speaker 4: your answer your question directly, it says that the Eagles
- 9:23Speaker 4: are a shot play offense. I mean, Jalen Hurts had
- 9:26Speaker 4: I think close to fifty percent of all of his
- 9:29Speaker 4: passing yards on three plays.
- 9:31Speaker 3: You know, the fifty two yarder. We just talked about, the.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Forty seven yarder to say Quon Barkley on the wheel route,
- 9:37Speaker 4: and then he had one to dots in for twenty
- 9:39Speaker 4: four yards outside of that.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And you could say this for every single game so far.
- 9:44Speaker 4: They just don't have a marriage between their intermediary passing game,
- 9:49Speaker 4: their run game, and their deep game. Greg Cosell said
- 9:52Speaker 4: on Inside the Tape last week on Inside the Birds,
- 9:55Speaker 4: that's hard to understand what the Eagles are trying to
- 9:58Speaker 4: accomplish offensively. And what he meant was, we talked about
- 10:02Speaker 4: this sequencing, you know, running a playoff first down to
- 10:04Speaker 4: set up second down, and second down to set up
- 10:07Speaker 4: third down, where you're marrying your run, you're marrying your
- 10:09Speaker 4: intermedia pass, then your deep shot. Right now, it seems
- 10:13Speaker 4: like the Eagles offense is take the deep shot is
- 10:15Speaker 4: when you can get it. I hope you can get it,
- 10:17Speaker 4: and then everything else is sort of okay. Like they
- 10:21Speaker 4: had a nice RPO game against the Broncos for about
- 10:24Speaker 4: a half of football and then it went away. So
- 10:27Speaker 4: I don't know what the Eagles offense really is right now.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Yeah, but I.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Would say I've probably said that in the past about
- 10:33Speaker 4: this offense too.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Well. Right, it seems that they don't have an identity
- 10:36Speaker 1: much on offense, and part of that is because they're
- 10:38Speaker 1: offensive line too. They're not as good as a running
- 10:40Speaker 1: team right now.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Right well, I mean, you got I read a quote
- 10:44Speaker 3: from Jeff MacLean.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I believe he caught up with Cam Jurgens after the
- 10:47Speaker 4: game and Cam said to him that he's just not
- 10:50Speaker 4: a He's not one hundred percent back yet from his
- 10:54Speaker 4: back surgery. He's not hurt or injured, but you know,
- 10:56Speaker 4: you have a back surgery, it takes some time to
- 10:58Speaker 4: get yourself in the right can landon Dickerson, we know
- 11:01Speaker 4: he's he's clearly been dealing with a lot of injuries,
- 11:05Speaker 4: and then obviously Lane Johnson's been in and out. So yeah,
- 11:08Speaker 4: they're not the same as last year for sure. That
- 11:10Speaker 4: doesn't mean there aren't some lanes. Barkley getting caught from
- 11:14Speaker 4: behind by Jonathan Cooper again shows you how good and
- 11:18Speaker 4: fast and fearsome.
- 11:19Speaker 3: That Broncos defense is.
- 11:20Speaker 1: No, they're definitely you know, that's a good deal. And
- 11:23Speaker 1: Hurts took six sacks yesterday, and I feel like there
- 11:28Speaker 1: are plays to be made instead of taking the sack,
- 11:30Speaker 1: just a quick dump off, a quick little safety valve.
- 11:34Speaker 1: It looked like there were multiple opportunities just to say, hey, Shipley,
- 11:38Speaker 1: here you go, boom, just get it out.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Well, one of Hurts's weaker points is and this goes
- 11:44Speaker 4: back to how the Broncos rushed the quarterback that I
- 11:46Speaker 4: was telling you about, is that when the pockets semi
- 11:49Speaker 4: starts to form that circular around him and takes away
- 11:53Speaker 4: the running lanes.
- 11:54Speaker 3: You know, because the pass rushers don't go inside the tackle,
- 11:56Speaker 3: they stay outside.
- 11:57Speaker 1: He does.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I don't think he sees it all there. He holds
- 12:00Speaker 3: on to it and doesn't see it.
- 12:01Speaker 4: And he's very willing to take the sack as he
- 12:04Speaker 4: did and not turn the ball over. And guess what,
- 12:06Speaker 4: he didn't turn the ball over on any of those
- 12:08Speaker 4: four actual sacks.
- 12:10Speaker 3: The other two were just him running out of bounce.
- 12:12Speaker 4: So that's normally a key to success for the Eagles,
- 12:16Speaker 4: that just in this game, in particular against a good team.
- 12:19Speaker 4: It's not, but I would tell you that we've seen
- 12:21Speaker 4: that time and time again against other teams. But Egles
- 12:24Speaker 4: have won that game because they've just been able to
- 12:27Speaker 4: outscore their opponent.
- 12:29Speaker 1: What do you make of like where they are? You know,
- 12:31Speaker 1: first month of the season's kind of a preseason. You're
- 12:34Speaker 1: just trying to like, are you worried that about Kevin
- 12:37Speaker 1: Batula and his role in this offense? I mean, you
- 12:40Speaker 1: see him in Jalen kind of getting at it on
- 12:42Speaker 1: the sideline. You see guys all throughout the season seemingly
- 12:46Speaker 1: we're not on the same page. Guys don't look happy,
- 12:48Speaker 1: body language looks poor. Are you worried that they made
- 12:50Speaker 1: a mistake with bringing in an inexperienced play caller with
- 12:54Speaker 1: this group of guys that won a world championship and
- 12:57Speaker 1: that they needed someone with a little bit more putsbah,
- 13:01Speaker 1: you know, and experience.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's a double edged sword, Mike.
- 13:05Speaker 4: I feel like that's gonna be the conversation every single
- 13:07Speaker 4: time they don't win a Super Bowl. And I'm not saying, Listen,
- 13:10Speaker 4: they may have win the Super Bowl this year, I'm
- 13:12Speaker 4: not trying to say that, but whenever things don't look right.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Somebody's got to get fired because they're not.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Equipped for the job.
- 13:18Speaker 4: And I think if you remember last year when they
- 13:20Speaker 4: were two and two and Vic Fangio's defense was getting shredded,
- 13:23Speaker 4: everybody was like, what's wrong.
- 13:25Speaker 3: With this guy?
- 13:25Speaker 4: What is he doing putting Avantae Maddix out there? How
- 13:29Speaker 4: come they can't rush the passer? Nolan Smith has no
- 13:31Speaker 4: say you know what I'm saying. We don't give it
- 13:33Speaker 4: time and we don't allow it to manifest. So no,
- 13:35Speaker 4: I'm not worried because it's the same offense they've been
- 13:38Speaker 4: running for the last three.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Or four years.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Different play caller, and maybe he needs to sequence his
- 13:43Speaker 4: calls better. But I'll be worried in week fourteen if
- 13:47Speaker 4: they're like only two games over five hundred, they're four
- 13:50Speaker 4: and one.
- 13:51Speaker 1: This will be an odd question. Oh God, did you
- 13:55Speaker 1: do you know Mark Sanchez at all?
- 13:59Speaker 4: I've met Mark Sanchez a couple of times when he
- 14:00Speaker 4: was an Eagles quarterback and some other places.
- 14:03Speaker 1: It is this story bizarre? Not surprising? Or I mean,
- 14:06Speaker 1: this is nuts.
- 14:09Speaker 3: I don't see how it could not be bizarre.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Absolutely well, I guess I asked that question of like
- 14:14Speaker 1: when you've covered him and you see this story and
- 14:17Speaker 1: you're like, I could kind of see that happening.
- 14:20Speaker 3: You know, when he came to the Eagles.
- 14:21Speaker 4: You know, obviously he was known as the Jets for
- 14:23Speaker 4: kind of doing some screwy things and everything like that.
- 14:26Speaker 4: But when he came to the Eagles, I found him
- 14:28Speaker 4: to be a fairly humble guy, easy to talk to,
- 14:31Speaker 4: not like into the whole party lie.
- 14:33Speaker 3: But you know this is what ten years later. I mean,
- 14:36Speaker 3: you never know you're in a city. We all know
- 14:38Speaker 3: that when you travel for business, you drink a little bit.
- 14:41Speaker 4: When you can, especially if you got money like Mark Sanchez.
- 14:44Speaker 3: So I'm not excusing what he did. I'm just saying, like, surprise,
- 14:47Speaker 3: not surprised, like.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Stuff that just keeps coming out, Like as at first
- 14:51Speaker 1: it was like, oh, you feel bad for him. I
- 14:53Speaker 1: hope he's okay, to the point where now like it
- 14:55Speaker 1: looks like he's going to serve some major jail time here.
- 14:59Speaker 4: It does appear that ony, So I guess to see
- 15:01Speaker 4: what happens, just be.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I know, you gotta run. Man. Check out Philly Voice
- 15:07Speaker 1: for his take on the Eagles loss, and of course,
