- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Good morning and I'm fine.
- 0:35Good afternoon and I need help walking.
- 0:38Well, welcome to Parkinson's, where everyday feels like a
- 0:40brand new game show called What's Your symptom?
- 0:42Do you ever feel like you're stuck in a game of like symptom
- 0:45hide and seek? You know, one hour you're moving
- 0:47fine, the next your leg feels like it's made of concrete or
- 0:50your hands doing the cha cha. That's the thing about
- 0:53Parkinson's. The symptoms that come and go
- 0:55are enough to make anyone crazy. Hey, I'm Bryce, and this is
- 1:00living with Parkinson's. The good, the bad, and the
- 1:02reality. And if you're looking for real

- 1:07through, hit subscribe because this channel is for you.
- 1:10All right, off the top, let's make this real.
- 1:14What's the one symptom that comes and goes for you or just
- 1:17drives you or your family nuts? Drop it in the comments below.
- 1:20You know what I read and I reply to every single one.
- 1:23And your story helps more than you know.
- 1:26OK, well let's get into today's topic.
- 1:28And let's just be honest, this is one of the wildest, most
- 1:31madding parts of Parkinson's for me.
- 1:34The symptoms, the symptom that comes and goes is like a moving
- 1:38target. Sometimes it's stiffness.
- 1:39Like I wake up and I feel almost normal, then the hallway, then,
- 1:44and then halfway through the morning my left leg decides
- 1:47Nope, Nope, not today. And suddenly I'm dragging it
- 1:49around like it weighs £50. You know, I've learned not to
- 1:54fight off moments. And this is the tip for you.
- 1:57I've learned not to fight off moments.
- 1:59If my body's telling me it's time to take a break, then I try
- 2:01to give myself a few minutes to sit, stretch or just breathe.
- 2:05And sometimes that short pause is all I need to get moving
- 2:08again. You know, a while back I had
- 2:11plans to meet up with a friend and I felt great, right?
- 2:14I was getting ready, I felt great.
- 2:15I could showered, addressed. I even managed to make myself
- 2:17look presentable, which as you know me, is an achievement on
- 2:20its own, you know? But as soon as I got to the
- 2:23restaurant and I stood up to greet him, it was like my body
- 2:26just quit cooperating, you know, my foot wouldn't move and I
- 2:29found myself clinging to the back of a chair like it was a
- 2:31life raft. And here's another tip.
- 2:34When when this happens, I've learned to not panic, right?
- 2:38I just let the people around me know what's up.
- 2:40Sometimes a quick explanation like, hey, I'm having an off
- 2:43moment. I just need a second.
- 2:44Can take the stress and the embarrassment out of it
- 2:47completely. Or the hand tremor, you know,
- 2:52sometimes it disappears for days and I start thinking maybe today
- 2:55is the day it's gone for good. And then just as I'm pouring my
- 2:58coffee, my hand decides it's going to do its best impression
- 3:01of the maraca, right? And now I'm just wearing half of
- 3:04my my coffee. So another kind of tip here,
- 3:09like if you struggle with a tremor, try using cups with
- 3:11lids, right? Trust me, less coffee on your
- 3:13shirt is more coffee in your mouth.
- 3:15And I normally I've, I've got like these, like I, I pick up or
- 3:20I get, or I give or sometimes I'm given or I buy, you know,
- 3:23even like McDonald's cups with the lids or if you're in Canada,
- 3:25Tim horton's cups with the lids. And I, when I make my coffee in
- 3:28the morning, I literally pour it into one of those cups with the
- 3:31lids. And it just makes it so much
- 3:33easier. And I felt more like I'm an
- 3:34adult. You know, my wife, she was like
- 3:38going to give me like a sippy cup almost, you know, like a, I
- 3:41don't know, like a plastic sippy cup thing.
- 3:43Just, you know, in the for my first coffee in the morning
- 3:46because I'm typically was spilling it all over myself.
- 3:48And I don't know, it just didn't feel adult enough.
- 3:50So I kind of feel it's kind of cool if I have a coffee take out
- 3:54mug instead and it kind of looks or coffee take out cup and it
- 3:56looks, you know, like I bought it.
- 3:58But regardless, you know, do the things that are going to help
- 4:01you, right? Do those things because you
- 4:03never know when those symptoms are going to come up and they
- 4:05are frustrating. They just come out of the blue,
- 4:06right? One day drinking my coffee fine,
- 4:09the next day I can. The next day I drink my coffee
- 4:10fine. The next day I can.
- 4:11And I can go through three of those days in a row or three off
- 4:14days in a row like that. And it just becomes it is what
- 4:17it is, right? It just becomes one of those
- 4:19things. But you know what?
- 4:21One thing that really drives me crazy and, and you might be the
- 4:25same way, and maybe you are. And if you are, let me know.
- 4:27You know, if I had a dime for every time someone said, but you
- 4:30seemed fine this morning, you know, if I had a dime for that,
- 4:34I'd be making YouTube videos from a yacht.
- 4:37It's confusing for family and friends.
- 4:39I get it. I remember planning a family
- 4:40outing one time and, you know, not, not not some epic
- 4:44adventure, just, you know, going out for groceries.
- 4:45And I was steady and I was moving well at home.
- 4:48And by the time we reached the parking lot, my muscles
- 4:50tightened up. I needed help just to get inside
- 4:53the store. The looks I got, you know, some
- 4:56worried, you know, some confused, made me want to, you
- 5:00know, hand out a business card or something that said like
- 5:01today's symptoms brought to you by Parkinson's, you know, now
- 5:04you see them, now you don't. That's pretty cool.
- 5:08That actually makes some good swag, like AT shirt, right?
- 5:09You know, right, Today's symptoms brought to you by
- 5:13Parkinson's, now you see them, now you don't.
- 5:17Crazy, but frustrating. But you know, here's the thing.
- 5:19I've started giving my family and my friends a quick heads up
- 5:22before I even go out, right? Sometimes I'm like, hey, I'm
- 5:24having a really good morning and I look great and everything's
- 5:26going well, but things can change, right?
- 5:28So if you see me slowing down, yeah, I might need a hand.
- 5:32It's not a big deal, but I might need a hand.
- 5:35And you know, again, just prepping them up, it takes the
- 5:37pressure off me and it helps them know what to expect.
- 5:40And it also helps them to know what I expect, right?
- 5:44So I'm like, hey, everything looks great.
- 5:46We're gonna have a great day today.
- 5:47We're gonna have a great day today regardless.
- 5:48But if all of a sudden a symptom comes in and you see me freeze
- 5:52or I'm kind of, I can't grab something or I can't pick
- 5:54something up, you know, I might need your help.
- 5:56So I'm basically telling them I'm giving them permission at
- 5:58that moment if they do see me struggling or they see something
- 6:01going different to help me. And they just again, just
- 6:04setting the stage makes the day easier.
- 6:08Because you know what, it's really exhausting to have to
- 6:10explain over and over again that, you know, Parkinson's
- 6:13systems symptoms can switch on and off like like a light bulb,
- 6:17right? We don't have that on and off
- 6:19button, no warning and definitely don't, we don't have
- 6:21a user manual, but we work just the same.
- 6:23We're on, we're off and sometimes we don't even know
- 6:26when that's going to happen. So it's just like I'm tired of
- 6:29explaining it. So instead I just kind of
- 6:31precursor it because you know what, the explaining gets old.
- 6:35You know, honestly, there's days when I just want to put up a
- 6:37sign and I just want to say, yes, I was fine earlier.
- 6:39No, I don't know what happened. Yes, it could change me again in
- 6:4310 minutes, right? There's this mix of
- 6:45embarrassment and guilt and a a weird kind of anger, you know,
- 6:48not at anybody, but just at the situation.
- 6:51I remember one time I was at a family dinner and I felt so
- 6:55awkward because I needed help getting up.
- 6:58You know, I could see the worry on everybody's face.
- 7:00But what do you do? What do you do?
- 7:03I don't know, Laugh when you can and just keep moving forward.
- 7:06That's all I can do. I can see that like, oh, boy.
- 7:08And this is this like my parents look at me or, or my, you know,
- 7:11my family, my kids look at me like, yeah, yeah, Dad, you know,
- 7:14it's like, you know, hey, come on, don't worry about it, right?
- 7:16Laugh when you can and you just keep moving forward.
- 7:19But don't miss the moments because you're afraid of it.
- 7:21Because at the end of the day, who cares?
- 7:23Who really cares if it took me longer to get up from a table,
- 7:27right? I'm not going to miss that time
- 7:28with my family just because it's going to take me longer.
- 7:30So, you know, think about that and you know, and, and saying
- 7:34that though, here's another tip for you.
- 7:36You have to give yourself grace, right?
- 7:38I used to beat myself up for needing help, but now I try to
- 7:41treat myself like I would a friend with patience, with a
- 7:44sense of humor and and a reminder that nobody's perfect,
- 7:48not even close, right? Let me say that to you one more
- 7:50time. Nobody's perfect, not even you,
- 7:53not even close, right? So give yourself some grace if
- 7:59you've ever thought why boys are going out, if I just have to
- 8:02explain myself again again, I hear you.
- 8:04This is Parkinson's. I'm sorry I didn't sign up for
- 8:07it. You didn't sign ever up for it.
- 8:09Nobody signed up for this right? But we're here, right?
- 8:13And we're figuring out together. So again, take what I can take.
- 8:17And if if this sounds like you or maybe you've got your maybe
- 8:22you've got your own. My symptoms did what moment?
- 8:25Share it in the comments and then hit subscribe too.
- 8:27If you haven't subscribed, come on, this channel's for you.
- 8:29You know what, come on, join us for this ride.
- 8:31You never know who might be who's going to who's joining.
- 8:34Thousands. We have thousands.
- 8:35We had 1000 people join this channel and this podcast last
- 8:38month. So come on for the ride.
- 8:40It's going to be fun. And and again in the comments,
- 8:42you just never know who you might help by telling your
- 8:46story. OK, All right, I put a call out
- 8:52to some of my friends. OK.
- 8:54And I asked them a little bit about this.
- 8:57And this is what I got. And it was really cool.
- 8:59They they delivered. So thank you to to my friends.
- 9:01So Susan, Susan told me about making it through an entire
- 9:05dinner party just fine, only to freeze completely in the doorway
- 9:09while saying goodbye. Right.
- 9:10So the whole night, I'm out, I'm finished.
- 9:12I did it right. And then in the doorway out on
- 9:14their way out, she froze, you know, And of course, she said
- 9:17that's when everybody was watching, right?
- 9:20So I asked her for a tip. Here's Susan's tip.
- 9:23She said she always scans for sturdy chairs and walls so she
- 9:27can use support just in case, right?
- 9:29So when she's going to a dinner party, she always looks for the
- 9:32the chair that's going to fit her best and maybe a wall that's
- 9:35right near beside so she can grab onto it or, or use it for
- 9:38help. So that was a really good tip.
- 9:39So thanks to Susan for that. Rick.
- 9:42Rick said he was on, he was on for a big work meeting, right?
- 9:47But the minute that he got into the elevator to go home, he went
- 9:49off and he could barely press the button.
- 9:52Right? Here's his tip.
- 9:54He got a card. He he's got a card in his wallet
- 9:56that explains he has Parkinson's and might need help.
- 9:59He says it saved him from a few awkward elevator moments.
- 10:02So again, if he's kind of stuck and he's has trouble talking, he
- 10:05just hands him the card and it says hey, and it's cool.
- 10:07So that's kind of cool. Again, just little tips from
- 10:09from people. And you know what, maybe you
- 10:11have a tip. If you had a tip or something
- 10:13you do in the comments, let's make a conversation about this.
- 10:16Let's either help each other or help, you know, help one
- 10:19another. And I'd love just to hear those
- 10:21tips and what you do. Another friend of mine, Janelle,
- 10:24Janelle, told me that she made it to her granddaughter's dance
- 10:26recital, sat through the whole show, and then she got stuck,
- 10:30literally stuck trying to stand up and leave, right?
- 10:32And she said all all that clapping, but I couldn't even
- 10:36get out of my seat. You know, frustrating, right?
- 10:39She's there, she's enjoying the moment, Everything's great.
- 10:41She's thinking to herself, I did it.
- 10:43She's clapping and then she couldn't get up.
- 10:45So here's her tip. She always gives herself extra
- 10:48time to stand up and lets her, her family know that she'll need
- 10:51a little help even before the show ends.
- 10:53So again, precursoring, right, Precursor in the event, hey,
- 10:57this might happen. And if it doesn't, cool, right,
- 11:00you know, yay celebration time. But if it does, at least they
- 11:03know it's coming. And at least they know, hey,
- 11:05it's OK, it's going to give a bit more time.
- 11:07So if you recognize yourself in these stories, trust me, you're
- 11:10not alone. You're just not.
- 11:12And here's a bracism. So we heard from Rick and
- 11:14Janelle and, and, but here's here's a bracism.
- 11:16This is, you know what you keep. Everybody's asking for bracism
- 11:18at all times. So here it is with Parkinson's.
- 11:20The only thing predictable is that it's unpredictable.
- 11:24The trick is learning to laugh when you can, ask for help when
- 11:27you need it. And remember, you're doing
- 11:30better than you actually think you are.
- 11:32So what symptom keeps you guessing?
- 11:35Drop in the comments because we're all in this together.
- 11:38And if you found this helpful, relatable or you just or Oh my
- 11:43God, that's so funny. I sort of was thinking of the
- 11:46story in my head. But if you found this helpful,
- 11:47relatable, or you want more real talk, hit the subscribe button.
- 11:51And if you want even more support and your laughs and go
- 11:53deeper, check out the inner circle.
- 11:56There's always room for one more and you can find links in the
- 11:58description to that. But here's one final tip for
- 12:00you. If your symptoms come and go and
- 12:03it feels like nobody gets it, keep a journal of your good
- 12:06right and your off times. It's helped me in spot patterns,
- 12:10help me spot patterns, adjust my routine, and even explain things
- 12:13better to my doctor and family. Remember this, if your symptoms
- 12:17come and go and it feels like nobody gets it, that's not your
- 12:19fault. That's just Parkinson's.
- 12:21Unpredictable. It's frustrating and it's
- 12:24absolutely real. But you're not alone.
- 12:26And together, we're stronger. All right.
- 12:29Thank you for being here and for showing up and for making this
- 12:31community the most supportive place for people living with
- 12:33Parkinson's on the Internet. Stay strong, right?

- 12:47Parkinson's may be part of your life, but it doesn't get to
- 12:50define it. Thanks for listening to Living
- 12:52with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 12:57If this episode moved you, helped you, or reminded you
- 13:00you're not alone, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
