- 0:00We can observe all around us the steps the mental force is taking
- 0:05to take charge of both physical and vital nature.
- 0:08While much of this takes place through the development of
- 0:11technological tools, it is nevertheless an achievement of
- 0:16the mind that makes these things possible.
- 0:19We may debate the appropriateness or safety of
- 0:22some of the developments, such as the liberation of energy from
- 0:26matter in the form of nuclear bombs, or the use of such
- 0:30capabilities as gene editing and cloning to upgrade and improve
- 0:35upon the natural formations of plant, animal, and man.
- 0:41Yet even if we debate the suitability of these steps, we
- 0:46cannot deny that mind is reaching out to gain mastery
- 0:50over nature. What is less visible and much
- 0:54less understood are the capacities of the mind and the
- 0:57mental force to act upon physical and vital nature
- 1:00directly without developing technological tools to do so.
- 1:06Yet in this realm, modern science is beginning to explore
- 1:10areas that in the past have been the province of rishis, sages
- 1:14and yogins, namely the understanding of the full
- 1:18capabilities of the entire human instrument, body, life, mind and
- 1:24our spiritual nature. Central to this quest is the
- 1:28development of the yogic trance Samadhi, which allows the seeker
- 1:33to explore inner space and begin to both know and experience
- 1:38states of awareness not usually recognized by the external
- 1:43mental consciousness, the rishis.
- 1:46Through use of the hidden capacities of the human
- 1:49consciousness, we're able to tap into a wider domain of
- 1:53consciousness and thereby understand and describe things
- 1:57which were long held to be fantasy, but are now understood
- 2:01to actually describe principles and processes of the manifested
- 2:07universe. While we rely on technological
- 2:10innovation to discover these things, the Rishis used a state
- 2:15of spiritual consciousness to discover these things.
- 2:19A recent example relates to the astronomical phenomenon known as
- 2:23The Big Bang. This has been held by Western
- 2:27astronomers to be the start of the universe without any
- 2:32explanation from their side as to where and how this initiating
- 2:36event occurred. The Rishis described a cycle of
- 2:41creation and dissolution of the universe, and thus The Big Bang
- 2:46is not the beginning of everything, but one point in a
- 2:49cycle of creation that was preceded by a former universe
- 2:54that was eventually dissolved. Today, Western scientists are
- 2:59discovering residues that appear to validate the existence of a
- 3:04former universe and out of the dissolution of which our
- 3:08universe eventually arose. Sri Aurobindo writes in his epic
- 3:14poem Savitri, A Legend and a symbol quote.
- 3:19Mind is a mediator divinity. Its powers can undo all nature's
- 3:24work. Mind can suspend or change
- 3:27Earth's concrete law, a franchise from Earth habits.
- 3:32Drowsy seal the leaden grip of matter.
- 3:35It can break indifferent to the angry stare of death.
- 3:39It can immortalize a moment's work, a simple Fiat of the
- 3:44thinking force. The casual pressure of its
- 3:47slight ascent can liberate the energy, dumb and pent within its
- 3:52chambers of mysterious trance. It makes the body sleep.
- 3:57A poisoned arm holds still the breath, the beatings of the
- 4:02heart, while the unseen is found.
- 4:05The impossible done communicates without means the unspoken
- 4:10thought. It moves events by its bare
- 4:13silent will, acts at a distance without hands or feet.
- 4:20This giant ignorance, this dwarfish life, it can illumine
- 4:24with a prophet's sight, invoke the backache rapture the furies,
- 4:29goad in our body, arouse the demon or the God, call in the
- 4:35omniscient and omnipotent, awake, a forgotten almightiness
- 4:40within, in its own plain, a shining emperor.
- 4:44Even in this rigid realm, mind can be king.
