- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27Hi everyone, my name is Sean Fox.
- 0:30I've spent nearly 20 years coaching track and field,
- 0:33working with youth clubs, middle schools, high schools,
- 0:37collegiate athletes, and private athletes.
- 0:40Along the way I've been a volunteer, a paid assistant, and
- 0:43a head coach. I've had the privilege of
- 0:46coaching athletes to school records, meet records, and
- 0:48championship titles, and I hold USATF Level 1 and 2 Emerging
- 0:54Elite certifications in the throat.
- 0:57Now, I don't share all that because I think I have
- 0:59everything figured out. You know I'm far from it.
- 1:02Coaching is humbling and every season reminds me how much I
- 1:04still have to learn. Well.
- 1:06My journey has given me though is a 30,000 foot view of what
- 1:10consistently makes programs successful.
- 1:13Whether it's a 12 year old just learning the basics or
- 1:15collegiate athlete chasing All American honors, I've come to
- 1:19believe that the success in athletics through sustainable
- 1:23success comes down to what I call the three VS for victory.
- 1:27Vision, value and vulnerability To begin.
- 1:34Vision is where everything starts.
- 1:37A-Team without vision is like a ship without a compass.
- 1:39You might have talent, you might have effort of that direction.
- 1:42You're going to be adrift. For me, you have to have the
- 1:46vision to see where you're headed.
- 1:49Otherwise how are you going to know that you got there?
- 1:52You know, vision isn't just a set of goals written out on a
- 1:55whiteboard. It's a clear picture of who we
- 1:58want to be and what we stand for and how we're going to get
- 2:02there. When I would coach throwers, we
- 2:07would tell them, you know, we may not break all the records,
- 2:10but we can commit to being the hardest working, most coachable
- 2:13athletes on the team. That was part of our vision.
- 2:20Everything we did every single day was to get 1% better.
- 2:26And if we put the work in every single day, we did the little
- 2:30things right. The only possible outcomes, we
- 2:35were either going to learn or we were going to win.
- 2:38How's it See, the thing about vision is they unite the people.
- 2:45A freshman who just picked up a shot and a senior who's chasing
- 2:48a school record in the disc. They're going to be in very
- 2:50different places, but if they share the same vision as the
- 2:54rest of the group, the entire training group gets better
- 3:02because they're all looking downfield the same way.
- 3:06You know, as coaches, we set the tone.
- 3:10If our vision is short sighted, you know, just chasing the winds
- 3:13and and getting this distance or this mark, we could burn our
- 3:17athletes up. But if our vision is bigger,
- 3:21it's about growth, development and preparing them for life
- 3:24beyond the sport. And we create a culture that
- 3:28lasts. And this leads to our second
- 3:33piece. Because you see, once you have
- 3:35the vision to know where you're going, you've got to be able to
- 3:38show athletes value, All right? Now, when we talk about value,
- 3:43athletes need to know that they matter beyond the points, beyond
- 3:47the PRS, beyond whether they're varsity or not, OK?
- 3:52I've coached everything from middle schoolers who just want
- 3:54to be part of something, college athletes who lived and breathed
- 3:58competition. The common thread.
- 4:02Every single athlete needs to feel valued in today's day and
- 4:06age, more so than ever before, when athletes feel valued, they
- 4:12buy in, all right? They work harder.
- 4:15They push through setbacks. And here's the key.
- 4:19The value has to be genuine, all right?
- 4:22It's not about empty parades. It's not about giving them some
- 4:26oh, hey, great job, that's hollow.
- 4:30It's got to be about showing the athletes they matter as human
- 4:33beings, that their value and worth on this program is more
- 4:38than just the numbers from the statcom.
- 4:41It's got to be about who they are as individuals and what that
- 4:45individualism brings to the program.
- 4:48How does this one specific person make our program better?
- 4:56One of the most meaningful moments of my career wasn't a
- 4:59championship, all right? It was hearing from former
- 5:03athletes years later who said, you know, you made me believe I
- 5:06was more than just an athlete. You gave me a home.
- 5:10You gave me a family. When I didn't have one.
- 5:14I found my place on your program.
- 5:19That kind of value will last far longer than any athletic career
- 5:24ever could, and that's what we want.
- 5:29You know, programs that thrive are programs where every athlete
- 5:32feels they contribute, where their effort and their presence
- 5:38matter. As coaches, we have to model
- 5:41that by valuing not just the stars with the role players, the
- 5:46managers, the kids who show up every day just trying to
- 5:48improve. It's not enough to simply have
- 5:51your top 4 studs be great and then let everyone else kind of
- 5:54founder. You want your bottom 4 to feel
- 5:58just as important as your top 4. Now, we all know stats are
- 6:04stats, right? There's going to be a top 4,
- 6:06there's going to be a bottom 4. But nobody ever has to feel like
- 6:10they're in the bottom. Not when everyone's in this
- 6:13together. So you got to show them value,
- 6:16right? Which leads us to our third
- 6:19piece, vulnerability. And this is the one that
- 6:25surprises most people. When you hear the vulnerable of
- 6:29the word vulnerability, you probably think of weaknesses.
- 6:33And that's for good reason. We open ourselves up when we
- 6:41share these things that we're struggling with, right?
- 6:44When we allow ourselves to let someone else in and connect.
- 6:53It's one of the greatest strengths you can bring to a
- 6:56program. OK, here's what I mean.
- 7:00Athletes know when you're being real.
- 7:03That's just, it's just how it is, right?
- 7:06They are the best barometers because they know if you're
- 7:10feeding them a line or not, so you got to be honest with them,
- 7:15even when that honesty might not be what they want to hear.
- 7:19Be real with them. And when they're struggling,
- 7:23share some of your struggles too.
- 7:26Let them know that they're not alone.
- 7:30Nobody in this should be alone. You know they're going to know
- 7:38when you're pretending to have all the answers, and they know
- 7:42when you're willing to stay. And they know that when you say,
- 7:48hey, I don't know, but let's try and figure this out together
- 7:54that you mean it. Sometimes the hardest thing for
- 7:59us is coach to simply say, I don't know, but I'll find out.
- 8:07The minute you can get over yourself if you have a hard time
- 8:11saying I don't know to something is the minute you begin to grow
- 8:15and show that vulnerable side that in and of itself, hey, I
- 8:20simply don't know. That's big.
- 8:26And that'll resonate with them, too.
- 8:29OK, now here's the deal. In my own coaching career, I've
- 8:33had to admit mistakes, change approaches, tell appetite that
- 8:37one's on me. It's humbling, I get it, but it
- 8:41builds trust. Vulnerability is also what
- 8:45allows athletes to come to us when they're struggling, not
- 8:47just physically, but mentally and emotionally OK, Especially
- 8:51at the collegiate level where kids are far away from home and
- 8:55they don't have that constant support structure that they had
- 8:59way back where they came from. That's hard to manage sometimes,
- 9:03and you've got to be there for them.
- 9:06You know, we create a culture of vulnerability where you feel
- 9:12like you can come in and you can just lay your troubles down and
- 9:17the rest of the group sits there and says, you know what we got
- 9:21you to, where you feel accepted. You know, these athletes take a
- 9:27risk when they do that. So when we as coaches can share
- 9:31some of that as well, that risk doesn't seem as great.
- 9:39You know, I'm, I'm reminded of the the cartoon image where it
- 9:42says, you know, here's what people think a leader is.
- 9:46And it's somebody, you know, cracking a whip while people are
- 9:49trying to pull their big stone chair, right?
- 9:51And then here's another picture right next to it and says what
- 9:54leaders actually are. And the guy is pushing the stone
- 9:57with the other people, right? You got to be willing to meet
- 10:04your athletes where they're at. If you can't, that makes for
- 10:09some really hard conversations down the road.
- 10:11And it really puts driving like divide in what could be a very
- 10:19fast ascent. Building trust.
- 10:23You know, when we create a culture where vulnerability is
- 10:29accepted, athletes, they're just not afraid to fail, you know?
- 10:35Because when they know that failure isn't the result, they
- 10:41know that learning and growing are the result.
- 10:50They know it's a part of the process when athletes and
- 10:55coaches share that space of honesty.
- 10:57And that's when the real magic happens.
- 10:59It really is. Now, here's the cool thing,
- 11:03right? When athletes share their
- 11:05vulnerabilities and what we call the valley of success, right?
- 11:08If you think about Flutter V, you've got this high point way
- 11:11up here, that's your vision and you get a little bit deeper.
- 11:16That's your value. You get down to the bottom, you
- 11:19know, kind of in between two peaks.
- 11:21That's your valley of success where all the vulnerabilities
- 11:24lie. Because we share our
- 11:28vulnerabilities with each other, something really cool happens.
- 11:33You're showing somebody else value by listening to them, by
- 11:36being there for them. And so when you show them value,
- 11:42something even cooler happens. You begin to see the vision for
- 11:46what they could possibly do, and they help you see the vision for
- 11:51what's possible for you. And then everyone begins to see
- 11:54the vision of what's possible for the team.
- 11:59If you want to create success, if you want to chase victories,
- 12:05the big ones, not just the meat ones, not just the trophies, but
- 12:10victories in life, you got to have the three VS All right, so
- 12:17recap those three VS for victory, vision, value, and
- 12:22vulnerability. Look, they're not magic words
- 12:26and they don't replace hard work, training plans, or good
- 12:29technique. By my 20 years of coaching
- 12:32across all the different levels, I've seen these three separate
- 12:36things bring programs together and allow them to do more than
- 12:44just survive, but thrive. Vision gives your team
- 12:49direction. Value gives your athletes
- 12:51purpose. Vulnerability gives your program
- 12:54authenticity. When you combine all three, you
- 12:58don't just build better athletes, you build better
- 13:00people. So that being said, I'm going to
- 13:05get off my soapbox, all right. I want to thank you all for
- 13:08letting me share my perspective with you.
- 13:10I hope it challenges you to reflect on your own coaching and
- 13:13maybe to strengthen one of those V's in your program at the end
- 13:17of the day. But we're all in this together
- 13:20to invest in all of our athletes, to invest in each
- 13:24other as coaches. So do me a favor, if you get a
- 13:30chance, pick someone up right, Show them some value.
- 13:38You'll be amazed what can happen.
- 13:41I have a vision for someone and see what happens.
- 13:46Share your vulnerabilities and see what you get back tenfold.
- 13:53Maybe we can leave a greater legacy that's bigger than one we
- 13:58ever left for future generations.
- 14:03Thanks again for allowing me to be on my soapbox.
- 14:06I'm Sean Fox. We'll talk to you soon.
