Transcript
- 0:00Griffin: Welcome back to Stories for Robots.
- 0:03I'm Griffin Schwed, your host and storyteller.
- 0:06Join me as I share some of humanity's most timeless tales with two silly robots who
- 0:11are trying to understand human culture by exploring fairy tales, folklore, and
- 0:15historical events from around the world.
- 0:17In season one, we're diving into stories you know, or at least you think you do.
- 0:22We're going back to the original versions of classic tales made
- 0:26famous by animated movies.
- 0:28But these original stories are pretty different from the
- 0:31versions you grew up with.
- 0:32Last time, we heard part one of the real story of "The Little Mermaid."
- 0:37If you missed that episode, pause this, go back, and check it out.
- 0:42Spark: Seriously, or else you're gonna miss, like, the whole mermaid part.
- 0:45Vector: True dat.
- 0:46Spark: Oh, in case anyone listening, like, kinda forgot what
- 0:49happened last time, I'll tell you.
- 0:53So, the Little Mermaid is super pretty and a super good singer, but she falls
- 0:58in love with a human prince, so she's like, " OMG, I have to go up to the human
- 1:02world." So she makes a deal with an evil sea witch to get some sweet, sweet legs.
- 1:06But in exchange, it hurts a lot when she walks, and she can't talk anymore.
- 1:10When we left off, she was just leaving the mermaid world behind
- 1:13and swimming up to the prince's palace with her magic leg potion.
- 1:17Griffin: Awesome recap.
- 1:19So the sun isn't up yet when she reaches the palace.
- 1:22As first light begins to brighten the sky, she sits on the marble
- 1:26steps and drinks the potion.
- 1:28For a few seconds, nothing.
- 1:30Then it feels like a sword is cutting through her.
- 1:33She passes out from the pain.
- 1:35But when she wakes up, the sun is shining and the prince is standing over her.
- 1:40She looks down.
- 1:41She has legs.
- 1:42Beautiful, delicate legs.
- 1:44Oh, and she's completely naked and has to wrap herself in her long hair.
- 1:48Spark: Awkward.
- 1:50Vector: Good for her.
- 1:51I never really understood pants.
- 1:53Who needs them?
- 1:54Griffin: The prince asks, "Who are you? Where did you come from?"
- 1:58She can't answer, obviously.
- 2:00She just looks at him with her deep blue eyes.
- 2:02He helps her stand and, well, every single step is like walking
- 2:05on knives, just like the witch said, but she doesn't let it show.
- 2:10The prince takes her to the palace.
- 2:12He gives her fabulous clothes.
- 2:14Everyone is amazed by her beauty and grace.
- 2:17She's the loveliest person they've ever seen.
- 2:20There's only one problem.
- 2:22She's completely silent.
- 2:24That night at dinner, the Little Mermaid dances.
- 2:27It's her only real way of expressing herself, and she's enchanting
- 2:31despite the pain in her feet.
- 2:33The prince is totally charmed, but unfortunately, the feelings he develops
- 2:38for her are not the kind she's hoping for.
- 2:40Spark: Oh, no, what are we talking about here?
- 2:42Griffin: Well, for one thing, he begins calling her his foundling.
- 2:46Vector: What is a foundling?
- 2:47Griffin: It means someone you found and took in, maybe like
- 2:50a stray puppy or something.
- 2:51Vector: This is an accurate descriptor for her.
- 2:54This seems good and acceptable.
- 2:56Spark: Oh, Vector, you don't understand.
- 2:58That's like a nickname you might give your annoying little sister or a pet
- 3:00dog, not someone you might wanna marry.
- 3:03Griffin: And it gets worse.
- 3:04He says he wants her to stay with him forever.
- 3:06Spark: Aww.
- 3:08Griffin: But she only gets permission to sleep outside his door on a pillow.
- 3:11Vector: The arrangement seems comfortable and practical.
- 3:14I do not understand the issue.
- 3:17Griffin: Despite everything, the little mermaid is happy with the prince.
- 3:21Together, they explore the countryside on horseback, riding through
- 3:24forests and climbing mountains.
- 3:26They pass many happy hours together each day, and she sees the wonders of
- 3:30land she had dreamed of her entire life.
- 3:33She is enchanted by the smell of the woods, the feeling of gentle
- 3:36breeze and sunlight on her skin.
- 3:39One day, after the little mermaid and the prince return from their
- 3:42adventures, she goes to the marble steps leading down to the sea and cools
- 3:47her burning feet in the cold water.
- 3:49That's when she sees her sisters in the waves.
- 3:52They tell her how sad everyone is and how much they miss their little sister.
- 3:56From then on, they visit every night.
- 3:59This goes on for some time, and as the little mermaid falls more
- 4:02deeply in love with the prince, he grows fonder of her too.
- 4:06But as you've already pointed out, he loves her in the way you might love a
- 4:10sweet, good child, like a little sister.
- 4:13Spark: Oh no, she's in the friend zone.
- 4:15Vector: The friend zone sounds like an excellent zone for humans.
- 4:18Humans love friends.
- 4:19Spark: But Vector, she doesn't want to be his friend.
- 4:21She wants to be his wife.
- 4:23She needs him to put a ring on it or she will literally turn into seafoam.
- 4:27No soul, no hunky husband, nothing.
- 4:30Griffin: Yep.
- 4:32One day the prince tells her, " You're so dear to me.
- 4:36You have the kindest heart.
- 4:37You're devoted to me, and you know what?
- 4:39You remind me of a young woman I saw once.
- 4:42I was in a shipwreck and she saved my life.
- 4:44She's the only one I could ever love, and you almost look like her."
- 4:49Spark: This man is dense.
- 4:51But also, girl, why can't you just write it down?
- 4:54I'm the one who saved you.
- 4:55I love you.
- 4:57Draw a picture or something.
- 4:59Griffin: Now that's a good question.
- 5:00It does seem like that would solve everything.
- 5:03Maybe mermaids don't know how to write?
- 5:05But in any case, in this story, she's stuck trying to communicate with
- 5:09the prince with her expressive eyes.
- 5:11And the prince is not getting the message.
- 5:15One day, not long after the prince confesses his love for the mystery
- 5:18girl, the king and queen announce it's time for the prince to get married.
- 5:24They've arranged for him to meet the neighboring kingdom's princess.
- 5:27The prince tells the little mermaid, " I have to go meet her,
- 5:31but they can't make me marry her.
- 5:33I can't possibly love her.
- 5:34She won't look like the temple girl.
- 5:36You look more like her.
- 5:38If I had to choose, I'd choose you."
- 5:40Vector: Understood.
- 5:41In human culture, if you can't marry the person you actually love,
- 5:45it is desirable to marry someone who kinda looks like that person.
- 5:48Spark: Nope, that is very odd.
- 5:50Griffin: Yeah, that's not at all normal.
- 5:52In any case, they sail together to the neighboring kingdom.
- 5:56It's a long journey, and the prince and the little mermaid
- 5:58spend a lot of time together.
- 6:00He's tender towards her, kissing her forehead and playing with her hair.
- 6:04She dreams of a future where they're together, happy as husband and wife.
- 6:09When they arrive and the princess appears, the little mermaid has to
- 6:12admit she's absolutely gorgeous.
- 6:15And then the prince gasps.
- 6:18"It's you," he cries.
- 6:20"You're the one who saved me from drowning. You're
- 6:22the girl from the temple."
- 6:23Spark: Nooo.
- 6:25Griffin: The princess explains that she was at the temple for
- 6:27her education, but now she's back.
- 6:30The prince is overjoyed.
- 6:32He tells the little mermaid, "I'm the happiest man alive. We'll be married at
- 6:36once, and I know you'll be happy for me because you care for me more than anyone."
- 6:41Spark: I'm sorry, the nerve of this guy.
- 6:43He does not deserve her.
- 6:45Griffin: Yeah, but the little mermaid isn't bitter.
- 6:48She kisses his hand even as she can feel her heart breaking.
- 6:52She knows she'll never marry the prince, which means that very
- 6:55soon she'll turn into seafoam.
- 6:58Well, the prince and the princess arrange to get married
- 7:00right away, like immediately.
- 7:03And the next thing the little mermaid knows, she's the maid of honor holding
- 7:07the bride's train during the ceremony.
- 7:09Vector: Wait.
- 7:10Griffin: Yes, Vector?
- 7:11Vector: A train would be too large and heavy for a notably
- 7:13small mermaid to carry.
- 7:15Griffin: Oh, yeah, not that kind of train.
- 7:18A bride's train is just part of her dress.
- 7:20It drags behind her when she walks, so the little mermaid is
- 7:22just holding it up off the floor.
- 7:24Vector: I knew that.
- 7:25Continue.
- 7:26Griffin: Anyway, that night, the wedding party is on a ship.
- 7:31It's a lot like the first night she saw the prince, with fireworks
- 7:34and music all night long.
- 7:36And despite the horrible feeling that it's her last night alive,
- 7:39the little mermaid dances while the prince and princess watch admiringly.
- 7:43Spark: Um, doesn't he know that she sacrificed everything for him?
- 7:47Her family, her voice, her tongue, her beautiful tail?
- 7:51This man is clueless and he does not deserve her.
- 7:54Griffin: It's true.
- 7:55But in this moment, the little mermaid feels nothing but love
- 7:58and tenderness towards him.
- 8:00Despite her disappointment, both at losing the prince and missing her chance
- 8:03to have a soul, she feels at peace.
- 8:07Finally, the prince and his bride head to their tent.
- 8:10The party ends.
- 8:11The ship goes quiet.
- 8:13The little mermaid leans on the railing, looking east at the lightening sky.
- 8:18She knows that at sunrise, in just a few minutes, she'll turn
- 8:22into seafoam and be gone forever.
- 8:26Then she sees a ripple in the water.
- 8:28It's her sisters, and they're completely bald.
- 8:31Vector: Smart, a bald, shiny dome allows for faster swimming.
- 8:35Spark: Wait, what?
- 8:36Why?
- 8:37Griffin: The eldest calls out, "We're here to save you.
- 8:40We sold our hair to the Sea Witch.
- 8:42She gave us this magic knife.
- 8:44Before the sun rises, you have to stab the prince.
- 8:47Once you do that, you'll turn back into a mermaid, and you can come home.
- 8:51Hurry.
- 8:52Either he dies or you die.
- 8:54Look, the sky is getting light.
- 8:55Hurry."
- 8:56They toss her the knife and disappear.
- 8:59Vector: For all that hair, it seems like they could have secured better terms,
- 9:02perhaps a deal involving less murder.
- 9:05Why did they do that?
- 9:06Griffin: Well, her sisters still love her.
- 9:08They want to save her life and bring her home, even if it means making another
- 9:12terrible deal with the Sea Witch.
- 9:14Spark: What's she gonna do?
- 9:15She's not a murderer.
- 9:16She can't kill him, can she?
- 9:18Griffin: Let's find out.
- 9:20So the little mermaid holds the knife.
- 9:23She pulls back the tent curtain.
- 9:25The prince and princess are sleeping, his head on her shoulder.
- 9:29The little mermaid's hand shakes.
- 9:32She looks at the prince, who whispers his bride's name in his sleep.
- 9:37She kisses his forehead.
- 9:39She looks at the sky getting brighter and holds the knife in her trembling hand.
- 9:44Finally, she raises the knife high into the air and throws it into the ocean.
- 9:51It's over.
- 9:54She would never kill the prince, even to save herself.
- 9:57But before the sun comes up and she turns into seafoam, she wants to feel the cool
- 10:02ocean water on her skin one last time.
- 10:05So she takes a final look at the prince and jumps overboard into the sea.
- 10:10Spark: Um,
- 10:11Vector: Thoughtful not to get sea foam all over the party boat.
- 10:14Griffin: Hold on.
- 10:15She starts to feel her body dissolving into sea foam.
- 10:18But then something strange happens.
- 10:21The sun rises, but she doesn't feel dead.
- 10:24She looks up and sees hundreds of transparent, beautiful
- 10:27beings floating in the air.
- 10:30She realizes she's like them now, transparent and floating.
- 10:34" What's happening?
- 10:35Who are you?" she asks.
- 10:37And she has a voice.
- 10:39Not like her old one, but it's beautiful, almost like an angel.
- 10:43Vector: That makes a lot of sense.
- 10:44And by a lot of sense, I mean no sense at all.
- 10:47Spark: Yeah buddy, is she dead or not dead?
- 10:50Griffin: Good questions.
- 10:51She's not exactly dead, but she's not exactly alive either.
- 10:55She's become something new, a spirit.
- 10:58Let me let them explain.
- 11:01"We are the daughters of the air," they answer.
- 11:03"We came to save you.
- 11:05You see, mermaids don't have souls, and neither do we.
- 11:09But we can earn souls by doing good deeds.
- 11:12We think you deserve to earn one too.
- 11:15Here's the deal.
- 11:16We do nice stuff like cooling down the air in really hot countries and spreading
- 11:21flower perfume to help people heal.
- 11:23And then after three hundred years of doing nice things like that,
- 11:26we get souls and go to heaven."
- 11:29Vector: Question: How important is flower perfume to global
- 11:32human health and happiness?
- 11:34Griffin: Yeah, it wouldn't be my top issue, but I feel like their little
- 11:37fairy hearts are in the right place.
- 11:39Spark: Okay, but wait, just confirming, she's not dead, right?
- 11:43Griffin: Not dead, but also not alive.
- 11:46She's a spirit, kinda like a friendly ghost who has the chance to earn a soul.
- 11:50Spark: Got it.
- 11:51Griffin: Good, because it's a little confusing.
- 11:55The Little Mermaid looks down at the ship.
- 11:58The prince and princess are staring sadly at the sea.
- 12:01It's almost as if they know she jumped overboard.
- 12:04The Little Mermaid floats over to the pair, kisses the bride's forehead,
- 12:09smiles at the prince, and rises with the other spirits into the clouds.
- 12:14" Three hundred years and we'll be in heaven," the Little Mermaid says with
- 12:18tears of joy and relief in her eyes.
- 12:20"Maybe sooner," a companion whispers.
- 12:23" When we fly invisibly through human homes and see good children
- 12:27who make their parents happy, our time gets shortened by a year.
- 12:31But when we see bad children, we cry, and every tear adds a
- 12:35day to our three hundred years."
- 12:38The end.
- 12:41Spark: Wait, what?
- 12:42Really?
- 12:43So she just becomes an air fairy and gets a soul after three
- 12:45hundred years of random good deeds?
- 12:47Griffin: Well, yeah.
- 12:48Spark: I don't really know how I feel about that.
- 12:51Like, was that a happy ending?
- 12:53She doesn't get to be with the prince, but she does get to earn a soul,
- 12:57which is what she really wanted.
- 12:59So, like, kinda happy ending?
- 13:01Griffin: Spark, I think you're onto something.
- 13:04It's not really a happy ending, but it's not exactly tragic either.
- 13:08Remember how I said Andersen felt like an outsider?
- 13:11He actually experienced the pain of loving someone who didn't love him back.
- 13:15Some people think the Little Mermaid is meant to be him, voiceless and
- 13:19super sad, watching the person she loves choose someone else,
- 13:22and then finding meaning anyway.
- 13:24Vector: The most important information is that children must be good
- 13:27or the air fairies will be sad.
- 13:29Griffin: I'm not sure that's the main lesson, but I bet little Hans
- 13:32thought parents would appreciate that.
- 13:34Spark: Well, I'm happy for the Little Mermaid.
- 13:36The prince didn't deserve her anyway, and now she gets to do good deeds
- 13:39and her soul lives on forever.
- 13:41Vector: And she doesn't have to deal with having a puny human body.
- 13:44Also pants.
- 13:45No more confusing pants.
- 13:47Griffin: Uh, yeah.
- 13:48Well said.
- 13:50Make sure you come back for the next episode.
- 13:52I'll be telling the absolute classic story that everybody loves, Aschenputtel.
- 13:57Spark: Huh?
- 13:58Vector: What is that?
- 13:59Griffin: That's the German name for Cinderella.
- 14:02Vector: Your German accent is terrible.
- 14:04Griffin: How do you know?
- 14:05Vector: My uncle is German.
- 14:07Griffin: That doesn't make sense.
- 14:09Whatever.
- 14:10To make sure you don't miss Cinderella like you've never heard it before,
- 14:13hit follow wherever you're listening.
- 14:15That way, the next episode of Stories for Robots will automatically
- 14:19drop into your feed next week.
- 14:21Spark: Also, please share the show with your friends.
- 14:23Vector: Yes, shout about it in public places or other normal human things.
- 14:29Spark: And give us a five-star rating while you're at it.
- 14:31It helps other families find us.
- 14:34Griffin: Stories for Robots was created, performed, and

- 14:59Vector: Griffin.
- 15:00Griffin: Yeah?
- 15:01Vector: How many mermaids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
- 15:04Spark: Ooh, I think I know this one.
- 15:06Vector: What one?
- 15:07I must know the answer.
- 15:08Spark: That's not a joke?
- 15:09Probably just one, Vector.
- 15:10They have hands.
- 15:11Griffin: Well, hang on.
- 15:12Are they underwater or on land?
- 15:14Vector: Underwater…
- 15:17Robot disclosure.
- 15:19My voice and Spark's voice are given a beautiful robot
- 15:21makeover using AI technology.
- 15:24That is why we sound so cool and good.
- 15:26Spark: We really do.
- 15:28Oh, and the background music was also created using AI tech.
