Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Health with Hashimoto's podcast. Our summer series is the Hashimoto's Health Lab.
- 0:05This series is going to be 10-minute episodes.
- 0:08Every week, we'll talk about a specific tool or practice. We're going to cover
- 0:12everything from environmental detox to stress reduction, energy boosters,
- 0:16biohacks, and all of it is going to be designed to give you tools for better
- 0:21health with Hashimoto's.
- 0:22I'm your host, Esther Yunkin. I'm a registered nurse helping women uncover their
- 0:26root causes and regain energy.
- 0:28So these episodes are going to be short. If you are ready for a deeper transformation,
- 0:33check out the Holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 0:35It will help you identify your unique triggers and root causes so that you can
- 0:40focus your own energy on what really matters for your health.
- 0:43Are you ready to explore a new strategy for thriving with Hashimoto's?
- 0:47Let's dive in. This is the Hashimoto's Health Lab.
- 0:50There's a new word, new-ish word going around, and I wonder if you have heard
- 0:53of it. It's called the exposome.
- 0:55And basically, it is the cumulative or total environmental exposures that you have.
- 1:03It's all of the chemicals and toxins and hormones and obesogens and everything
- 1:08that has hit you all cumulatively. It's just a way to, you know.
- 1:14To name that. And I have never used that word specifically, but if you've gone
- 1:19through the Holistic Hashimoto's program, if you've gone through the Root Causes Revealed course,
- 1:25the mini course, you have heard the concept because one of the biggest triggers
- 1:31and root causes for any autoimmune problem,
- 1:34but specifically for Hashimoto's, is the toxins that we are exposed to.
- 1:40So your exposome matters.
- 1:44And today's tool is one way to counteract that, and that is filtering your water
- 1:50or looking at your water.
- 1:52This could be a huge episode. I could do probably a series, a month-long series
- 1:57during the winter, you know, 20-minute episodes of different ways to filter
- 2:02your water and, you know, pros and cons of different things.
- 2:05But first, let's talk about why your water matters and clean water specifically
- 2:11matters, especially if you have an autoimmune problem.
- 2:15Now, with every single autoimmune problem, you have three different things.
- 2:20You have a genetic component, you have a gut component, and you have one or more triggers.
- 2:28Your genetic component is unchangeable.
- 2:32You are born with specific genes. Now, one common analogy that is said is that
- 2:38your genes load the gun and then the triggers obviously pull the trigger.
- 2:44So your genes, you're born with them. But what you are exposed to can impact
- 2:51how that gene is expressed.
- 2:53So we want to do the best that we can to make sure that our genes are expressed
- 3:00correctly, that the bad ones are not turned on.
- 3:03We want to make sure that all of the switches are flipped in the correct order,
- 3:07right? And your body is awesome.
- 3:09Your body is amazing. It's always striving for health. So let's support it as much as we can.
- 3:15And here is what is in the...
- 3:18Typical tap water. This is per the EPA studies.
- 3:23So in 98% of U.S. water systems, you have chlorine.
- 3:28Now this is changing with the Maha movement. I think Florida as of this month
- 3:34or maybe next month soon, Florida is getting rid of chlorine in tap water.
- 3:39I don't know about other states.
- 3:40I'm assuming that other states will follow suit, because chlorine, like you've seen in the.
- 3:48Hashimoto's Decoded, the Root Causes Revealed mini course, if you haven't done
- 3:52that yet, it's going to take you less than an hour to go through,
- 3:54and I'm going to help you figure out your root causes.
- 3:56But we talk about the periodic table of elements, and I show you where chlorine
- 4:00is, and I show you in, you know, a very simple way why that matters.
- 4:06I show you chlorine, I show you matters for your thyroid that you have chlorine exposure.
- 4:15Another thing that is in your water, at least in 70% of tap water, are PFAS.
- 4:22Those are PFAS. They're the forever chemicals. They're found in 70% of U.S.
- 4:28Tap water, and those are associated with thyroid dysfunction.
- 4:33Microplastics, another thing in tap water. They are so prevalent.
- 4:3883% of global tap water samples have microplastics. This is horrible.
- 4:44We do not want to be drinking plastic.
- 4:47And yet these microplastics are in our tap water. And that's,
- 4:51you know, even if you're avoiding drinking out of a plastic bottle.
- 4:54And yes, whenever possible, avoid drinking out of plastic.
- 4:58Drink out of glass. When I am home, I have, I just use a mason jar,
- 5:03you know, basic one liter or one quart.
- 5:07A canning jar. It's glass. So cheap. You can get them at a garage sale for 10 cents.
- 5:12I was passed down a whole bunch by different people at church,
- 5:16actually, like, hey, do you want any canning jars? I'm like, yes, absolutely.
- 5:19That is what I prefer to drink out of when I am at home. When I'm out and about,
- 5:23I have a stainless steel water bottle because, again, I don't want the exposure to plastics.
- 5:29When I have to get some water on the go, I'll go to the gas station and I'll
- 5:33get you know a plastic jug of water.
- 5:35I try to get the one gallon plastic jugs and then I refill my stainless steel
- 5:40because I don't want the the squeezy plastics that are at the gas station in
- 5:46all of the water bottles.
- 5:47I don't know about you but I'm always looking for ways to reduce my exposome,
- 5:53to reduce the things that I'm exposed to.
- 5:56I can't control it all but what I have control over, I want to control.
- 6:01So gross. Microplastics in our water. Another thing in our water,
- 6:04pharmaceutical residue.
- 6:06Yuck. We have drugs and hormones in our water. There are trace amounts of drugs and birth control.
- 6:14So many women are on birth control and then they're peeing it out and there's hormones in our water.
- 6:20So we have pharmaceutical residue in our water.
- 6:23So all of this is going to contribute at some point to your exposome.
- 6:29Exposome, whatever, you know,
- 6:31to those toxins that you don't want to have bombarding you all the time.
- 6:36So a high quality water filter is one simple tool that you can implement.
- 6:41And I guess it could be simple, it could be complex.
- 6:44This one could be however big you choose to make it. You can do everything from,
- 6:49you know, a countertop system.
- 6:51I will tell you the one water filtration system that I have been looking at the most.
- 6:56Right now, our well water has been tested fine and I don't need an additional water filter.
- 7:03But if I did, my number one choice is called the water machine.
- 7:08Number one, the water machine is glass and it uses a carbon filter.
- 7:11It sits on a countertop where you can get stand for it. I love that it's glass.
- 7:16I love that there's not plastics that the water is going through.
- 7:20I think there's a tiny, you know, plastic spout maybe, but for the most part,
- 7:24it's glass and it's carbon.
- 7:26It gets rid of everything. You get rid of the bacteria, get rid of the chlorine, viruses.
- 7:33Parasites, fluoride, heavy metal, pharmaceuticals, petroleum contaminants,
- 7:38BPA, and like I already talked about PFAS, it's going to get rid of all of it.
- 7:43It gets the herbicides and the pesticides out.
- 7:46The water machine is so good. And it
- 7:50keeps the minerals in. So there's other ways to filter your water too.
- 7:54There's reverse osmosis. That one's a really common and popular one because
- 7:59that gets everything out.
- 8:01The problem with reverse osmosis is that you have to add the minerals back in.
- 8:05And so there's some chemistry and some playing with it. And once you figure
- 8:09it out, I think it's not a problem, but it's just one extra step.
- 8:13So for me, when I have been looking at water filtration systems and water purifiers,
- 8:18that's the one that I landed on. I love the water machine.
- 8:22I do not own one and the only way I can
- 8:25get you a discount code is if I bought one first and like I said I don't need
- 8:29one so I do not have a discount code for you but if you go to the website which
- 8:35is just thewatermachine.com there's a pop-up that can save you I can't remember
- 8:40what percentage when you buy straight from the company.
- 8:43When you're looking at investing in this tool in you know filtering and cleaning
- 8:48your water, you do have options.
- 8:50Like I said, the reverse osmosis, the carbon, there's ceramic filters.
- 8:54You can get everything from a pitcher that you put in their fridge,
- 8:59or you can get actually in-fridge ones. You can get whole house filters.
- 9:03You have a lot of options. Like I said at the beginning, we could do a whole
- 9:08month-long series, the 20-minute episodes, on your different options.
- 9:13And so for right now in this 10 minute episode, I'm going to tell you that the
- 9:17one I chose, if I needed to invest in one right now, is the water machine.
- 9:21And it would just be for drinking. It's not a whole house water filter.
- 9:24It's not going to affect the showers, but it would clean up the water very,
- 9:29very, very well. And you don't have to add anything back in.
- 9:32But there's a lot of choices. So you get to make that decision for you.
- 9:36But the biggest decision is choosing to lower your environmental toxin exposure
- 9:43through something that you're supposed to have, you know, a half a gallon to
- 9:47a gallon drinking of water a day.
- 9:50That's a lot. And so it's one little thing that you can do that has a huge cumulative
- 9:54effect, filtering your water.
