Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about
- 0:45Speaker 1: New Order, the greatest British bands of the post punk era,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and me getting to know you and of course your voicemails, text,
- 0:53Speaker 1: dms and more, and as always, a whole lot of Rosie.
- 0:57Speaker 1: All Right, disc goes, let's get into it, all right,
- 1:14Speaker 1: all right, all right, we are here. We are in session,
- 1:16Speaker 1: the discos have entered the chat and I'm grateful you're
- 1:19Speaker 1: here with me today. On this bonus episode of Disgraceland,
- 1:22Speaker 1: we are starting off prompted by this week's full episode
- 1:25Speaker 1: subject to Disgraceland New Order. And there's a lot going
- 1:29Speaker 1: on in this episode on the crime front that I'm
- 1:31Speaker 1: not going to use this space to discuss, but instead
- 1:34Speaker 1: I want to jump off one musical fact for the
- 1:36Speaker 1: New Order story as a way into a larger musical
- 1:38Speaker 1: question that I've been thinking about. Some of you may
- 1:41Speaker 1: be saying, who the hell is New Order? I've never
- 1:43Speaker 1: heard of New Order, and that's cool, and that's why
- 1:45Speaker 1: we have the full episode for you to check out.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But know this, you might not know who New Order is,
- 1:50Speaker 1: but you definitely know who Quincy Jones is. Quinsy or
- 1:54Speaker 1: Q is one of the biggest names in the music
- 1:56Speaker 1: industry and has been for the last sixty some odd years.
- 1:59Speaker 1: The dude is a giant, and back in the nineteen
- 2:01Speaker 1: eighties sort of at the apex of his career, or
- 2:06Speaker 1: right about at the beginning of the apex of his career,
- 2:09Speaker 1: he recognized that New Order was one of the most
- 2:12Speaker 1: promising groups to emerge out of England. So Quincy Jones
- 2:16Speaker 1: AKAQ here set about to work with New Order. The
- 2:18Speaker 1: results debatable. What it wasn't was the next thriller, but
- 2:23Speaker 1: it doesn't erase the fact that one of the greatest
- 2:25Speaker 1: producers of all time recognized the greatness in a little
- 2:29Speaker 1: synth band from the UK. It's no secret that the
- 2:32Speaker 1: United Kingdom, more specifically let's just narrow it down. Let's
- 2:35Speaker 1: say England. This is where my thoughts have been. It's
- 2:38Speaker 1: no secret that England has produced some of the greatest
- 2:40Speaker 1: groups of all times, specifically of the past forty years.
- 2:44Speaker 1: That's the era that I'm more interested in, from the
- 2:47Speaker 1: time of New Order on from nineteen eighty to now.
- 2:51Speaker 1: The years prior, from say the Beatles in nineteen sixty
- 2:54Speaker 1: two sixty three through the punk explosion of the seventies
- 2:57Speaker 1: and up until nineteen eighty are less inner to be
- 3:00Speaker 1: because it's music history territory that has been strip mine
- 3:03Speaker 1: time and time again. We've talked about I've talked about
- 3:06Speaker 1: this era so much, have done episodes on so many
- 3:08Speaker 1: of these subjects. I love that era. I love those bands.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But you know there's more, Okay, That's what I'm interested in.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I'm not interested in discussing or debating the greatness of
- 3:18Speaker 1: the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, led Zeppelin, even the Clash,
- 3:21Speaker 1: or any of the other amazing rock bands that emerge
- 3:23Speaker 1: from England between sixty three and seventy nine, and all
- 3:26Speaker 1: the great punk bands as well. But I am interested
- 3:29Speaker 1: in discussing and debating the English bands that broke out
- 3:32Speaker 1: after punk rock broke through? Who are the greatest English
- 3:37Speaker 1: groups of the post punk era? It is an impressive list.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And I'm not just talking about post punk bands. I
- 3:45Speaker 1: know that's a genre, Okay, I mean the era, I
- 3:49Speaker 1: mean after punk. I mean it literally post punk era.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It's an impressive list and it starts with New Order.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It includes a long list of great bands. Peche Mode, Police,
- 4:01Speaker 1: Dire Straits. And I know you're saying, hey, depeche Mode
- 4:04Speaker 1: started in seventy nine or whatever. The Police started in
- 4:06Speaker 1: seventy seven. Yeah, but they weren't punk bands, so therefore
- 4:09Speaker 1: they are post punk. They are after punk. Dire Straits
- 4:13Speaker 1: and they didn't hit really until the eighties either. The
- 4:15Speaker 1: Police didn't really break through until the eighties. Dire Straits
- 4:18Speaker 1: and I say that already. I think I did the
- 4:20Speaker 1: the the Rhythmics, Doran, Duran, Echo and the Bunny Men
- 4:23Speaker 1: and the Cure, the Smiths. Okay, that's the eighties. The
- 4:28Speaker 1: nineties might even be more impressive. Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Radiohead, Stone, Roses, Supergrass,
- 4:35Speaker 1: The Verve, Swede, Bush, Travis Happy Mondays. I feel like
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm a great Scott. Listen, let's break it down. You
- 4:41Speaker 1: basically got two decades of greatness the eighties in the
- 4:44Speaker 1: nineties to choose from here. Remember we're talking about England, Okay,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I just I don't know why I feel like I'm
- 4:48Speaker 1: gonna say that again. And we are excluding the sixties
- 4:52Speaker 1: and the seventies. But if you're picking two bands from
- 4:54Speaker 1: the sixties, you'd probably go Beatlestones, And if you're gonna
- 4:56Speaker 1: go two bands in the seventies, he probably go Zepp
- 4:58Speaker 1: and Clasher. Maybe not, but that's what I sow. What
- 5:01Speaker 1: two English bands from the eighties do you choose? And
- 5:05Speaker 1: what two English bands from the nineties do you choose?
- 5:09Speaker 1: It is New Order one of them greatest English group
- 5:16Speaker 1: not solo artists of the post punk era. For the eighties,
- 5:22Speaker 1: I probably go The Cure in the Smiths and for
- 5:24Speaker 1: the nineties I probably go Away Assistant Blur. But I'm
- 5:28Speaker 1: not saying that exactly, and I got to think about
- 5:30Speaker 1: it more. Not sure about a fifth, more modern band,
- 5:32Speaker 1: maybe Arctic Monkeys again, need I need to give it
- 5:35Speaker 1: a think. So what are your top five English groups
- 5:37Speaker 1: from the post punk era? Prompted by a New Order,
- 5:40Speaker 1: this new full episode we have on New Order six one, seven,
- 5:43Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight, leave me a voicemail,
- 5:46Speaker 1: send me a text, let me know, or you can
- 5:48Speaker 1: hit me at this grace lamp pod on the Socials.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Gonna take a quick break back in a flash, your
- 5:53Speaker 1: voicemails and your texts, all right, you know the drills
- 6:16Speaker 1: six one seven, nine oh six six six three eight
- 6:19Speaker 1: to send a text, to leave a voicemail, just like
- 6:21Speaker 1: this dude from the nine to seven eight. Uh So,
- 6:23Speaker 1: before we get to the message, here's just a couple
- 6:25Speaker 1: of weeks ago, I told you guys about my experience
- 6:27Speaker 1: as a little kid backstage at an Arrowsmith concert that
- 6:30Speaker 1: was probably eighty eight eighty nine. This dude has his
- 6:33Speaker 1: own story about being kid backstage at an Arrowsmith concert
- 6:36Speaker 1: from a different era of the band, entirely from seventy
- 6:39Speaker 1: eight seventy nine, and it's freaking awesome. Sean, let's play
- 6:42Speaker 1: the nine seven eight.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Jake Annie from the nine to seven eight part of
- 6:47Speaker 2: Boston Great Podcast, Long Time Listen. I got a little
- 6:51Speaker 2: Arrowsmith story for you. My dad was a buddy of
- 6:55Speaker 2: the backstage man of manager of Arrowsmith and us backstage
- 7:01Speaker 2: passes late seventy seventy eight seventy nine. So we went
- 7:05Speaker 2: in Boston Garden backstage and tell us, come on, let's
- 7:13Speaker 2: go see the guys. He goes, but I got to
- 7:14Speaker 2: put you to work. So we carried in big trash
- 7:17Speaker 2: barrels full of beer into this locker room and barrow
- 7:21Speaker 2: Smith was in there, Steve Tyler, everybody, a bunch of
- 7:25Speaker 2: girls everywhere, and he said, Joe said to us, just look,
- 7:30Speaker 2: don't say nothing. We're going to the end of the
- 7:32Speaker 2: locker room and then we'll come back. So we're going down.
- 7:35Speaker 2: There were drugs everywhere. It was a freaking madhouse. So
- 7:38Speaker 2: we go back there and one of them, I think
- 7:41Speaker 2: it was Tyler, yelled to get their kids out of there.
- 7:43Speaker 2: We were seventeen eighteen at the time, so we get out.
- 7:47Speaker 2: They were playing with zz Top and as we're out there,
- 7:51Speaker 2: Billy Gibbons goes by and he goes, I hope you
- 7:53Speaker 2: boys are bringing beer into our locker too, So we
- 7:56Speaker 2: went in there. I got to admit, the girls from
- 8:00Speaker 2: ZZ Talk were a lot prettier than the girls from Arrowsmith,
- 8:04Speaker 2: and those guys were actually pretty cool. They just kind
- 8:07Speaker 2: of had this essence around him that was just unbelievable.
- 8:10Speaker 2: They were just laid back, cool, guys. They chatted a
- 8:14Speaker 2: little bit and then they said, well, get out of here.
- 8:18Speaker 2: We got to get ready for the show.
- 8:20Speaker 3: But it's just a.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Pretty cool experience over and out from being.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Time dude, amazing story. Not surprised that the Texas boys
- 8:30Speaker 1: had better taste in women than the New Englanders. And
- 8:33Speaker 1: I love that their vibe was so cool and so
- 8:35Speaker 1: different than Aerosmith. So thank you for the story. You know,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I was thinking about this before I started talking into
- 8:41Speaker 1: the microphone of you guys today. I was thinking about
- 8:44Speaker 1: all the Aerosmiths incoming I've received from you guys, and
- 8:48Speaker 1: all this sort of shit. We've talked about Aerosmith, and
- 8:50Speaker 1: I just we haven't talked a lot about Joe Perry.
- 8:53Speaker 1: We talked a lot about Steven Tyler and how goofy is,
- 8:56Speaker 1: and I talked about how cool Tom Hamilton was, but
- 8:59Speaker 1: I never mentioned how cool I think Joe Perry was
- 9:02Speaker 1: and is. I guess not to mention that he is
- 9:04Speaker 1: a beast of a guitar player, and I just I
- 9:06Speaker 1: felt that worth mentioning. It's important to remember the positive
- 9:10Speaker 1: stuff here. I feel like we're pretty balanced, but I
- 9:13Speaker 1: just wanted to get that out. I'm not sure I
- 9:14Speaker 1: said it in the last few weeks. All right, let's
- 9:17Speaker 1: check out this voicemail from the two to seven.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Well you but you bit one off of that one.
- 9:24Speaker 3: All right? So who are we? Well, I don't know
- 9:27Speaker 3: who anybody else is. I'm John, I'm from New Hampshire.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I'm a craftsman. I work by myself because I don't know.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I guess that's harry enough standing myself as opposed to
- 9:40Speaker 3: anybody else. But yeah, so I spend a lot of
- 9:44Speaker 3: hours by myself doing detailed things, and I listened to music,
- 9:49Speaker 3: and I listened to interesting, thought provoking podcasts, one of
- 9:54Speaker 3: which are actually all of your stuff is really interesting
- 9:57Speaker 3: and thought provoking. In music, I find it's so suited
- 10:05Speaker 3: to the situation. If I'm doing something really cerebral, I
- 10:08Speaker 3: want to listen to jazz or something jazz influence, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 3: something that's really just technical and there but not there,
- 10:18Speaker 3: just kind of I hate to say numbers, but it's
- 10:21Speaker 3: almost like numbers, you know. And then you know, if
- 10:25Speaker 3: I'm doing something loud and thrashy, you got to put
- 10:28Speaker 3: on something loud and trashy. And you know, if a
- 10:30Speaker 3: thirty eight year old man needs to feel like a
- 10:32Speaker 3: teenager again. Well then I put on motherfucking Wutia Clan.
- 10:37Speaker 3: So that's that's who I am, brother, and you're a
- 10:41Speaker 3: big part of it in all the podcasters, so that's huge.
- 10:45Speaker 3: So thank you guys for what you do, and specifically
- 10:48Speaker 3: thank you for this part of your podcast because it's
- 10:51Speaker 3: really interesting to be able to take part in it
- 10:55Speaker 3: and like kind of take a little bit of ownership
- 10:57Speaker 3: in it. I feel like you actually listen to us,
- 11:00Speaker 3: you know what I mean. Like some of the stuff
- 11:01Speaker 3: he says say drive me absolutely batshit sometimes and then
- 11:04Speaker 3: other times I'm frigging thumping on the roof of my
- 11:06Speaker 3: truck going yeah, buddy. So that's that, and listen. I'm
- 11:11Speaker 3: sure you've heard a million arrowsmith stories at this point,
- 11:13Speaker 3: but here's one for you. All right. I can't believe
- 11:15Speaker 3: I forgot this. My family owned a seafood market in
- 11:20Speaker 3: New Hampshire. Stephen Tyler walked in one time. There was
- 11:25Speaker 3: a Vietnamese guy working, and he, with his accent, said
- 11:29Speaker 3: to my mother, he's in aerosmith. My mother heard this
- 11:33Speaker 3: as he's an arrowsmith. My mother didn't know who Stephen
- 11:38Speaker 3: Tyler was, so hand to God, my mother as she's
- 11:42Speaker 3: checking Steven Tyler out says, so do you make arrows? Shit?
- 11:47Speaker 3: You not, bro. You should have seen the friggin sideways
- 11:50Speaker 3: head that he had. Fucking hilarious. All right, buddy, keep
- 11:54Speaker 3: up the good work. I'm gonna listen to the rest
- 11:56Speaker 3: of your podcast. You just inspired a way too long
- 11:58Speaker 3: voicemail chaff and.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Now doc rolla John amazing man, amazing. I literally laughed
- 12:04Speaker 1: out loud when I heard your mom asked Steven Tyler
- 12:08Speaker 1: if he made arrows, So yeah, stoke to get to
- 12:11Speaker 1: know you, John. If you guys missed the after party
- 12:13Speaker 1: last week, a listener called in and asked about me,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and I gave an answer.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Uh.
- 12:19Speaker 1: The listener wanted to know where you know, sort of
- 12:21Speaker 1: where I come from, what makes me me, It's et cetera.
- 12:24Speaker 1: But I turned it around afterward and I asked about
- 12:26Speaker 1: you guys, and that's what John is responding to here,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and I appreciate that, And uh, I want to know
- 12:33Speaker 1: who you guys are, and what you do, what you
- 12:36Speaker 1: listen to when you listen to it, what makes you tick,
- 12:39Speaker 1: not only because I want to make better content for you,
- 12:41Speaker 1: but because fucking social media in the world today can
- 12:45Speaker 1: be so anti social when you get right down to it.
- 12:47Speaker 1: So John, I love the message. I'm the same dude,
- 12:51Speaker 1: jazz in the morning when I'm writing, and loud music
- 12:54Speaker 1: in the afternoon when I'm working around the house or
- 12:56Speaker 1: hitting balls with my boys. Guys six one seven, nine
- 12:59Speaker 1: oh six, six three eight, call me, leave me a voicemail,
- 13:02Speaker 1: send me a text, introduce yourselves. All right, let's check
- 13:05Speaker 1: out with another disco here with Laura from the nine
- 13:07Speaker 1: to one four.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Hey, Jake, it's Laura. Love the show. Of course. I
- 13:13Speaker 5: love everything you do and all the story view on Earth.
- 13:16Speaker 5: It's such a journey. And I don't know if you've
- 13:20Speaker 5: already covered this artist. I haven't been through all of
- 13:22Speaker 5: the backlog of episodes. But Sia, whatever you think of
- 13:28Speaker 5: her as a pop star or her pop music, you
- 13:31Speaker 5: can't deny the unbelievable talents that she's got. And I
- 13:36Speaker 5: seem to remember a story of some kind of betrayal
- 13:40Speaker 5: or intrigue in her background where she did not intend
- 13:46Speaker 5: to release her vocals on a track, But since someone
- 13:52Speaker 5: maybe a producer I don't know who would make this decision,
- 13:54Speaker 5: decided that she did it the best, he went out
- 13:58Speaker 5: and released it. Without her knowledge or something like that.
- 14:00Speaker 5: I don't even know if that's even possible, But if
- 14:03Speaker 5: this story really happened, I would to hear it on Disgraceline.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Would be amazing because I know you would put the
- 14:08Speaker 5: spin on it that it needs, that it deserves if
- 14:12Speaker 5: this really happened. So from what I remember of this story,
- 14:15Speaker 5: that's why she covers her face with her hair because
- 14:19Speaker 5: the last thing she wants is same and you know,
- 14:23Speaker 5: without without rocking her world at all, I would I
- 14:26Speaker 5: would love to learn more about her. Thanks again for
- 14:29Speaker 5: everything you do. Bye bye.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Great idea, Laura, And yes, that sounds totally like something
- 14:36Speaker 1: that a producer would do and could do. Sia go
- 14:40Speaker 1: to look into it. I never knew this story. I
- 14:42Speaker 1: never I don't know anything about her, to be perfectly honest,
- 14:44Speaker 1: but this is intriguing and I appreciate the recommendation. It's
- 14:49Speaker 1: a good one, all right, guys six one seven nine
- 14:51Speaker 1: O six six six three eight. If you've got a recommendation,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I'm sure we should be doing an episode. Excuse me.
- 14:55Speaker 1: You leave me a voicemail or a text, let me
- 14:57Speaker 1: know your favorite English groups of the post punk era are,
- 15:00Speaker 1: and also just introduce yourself. Let me know a little
- 15:02Speaker 1: bit about you, what you do, what makes you tick?
- 15:04Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Let's check out some texts. We have this conversation going
- 15:11Speaker 1: about engagement and how artists connect with their audience and
- 15:15Speaker 1: what makes you, guys, as an audience, connect with your
- 15:18Speaker 1: favorite musicians. And of course we've been talking about Taylor
- 15:21Speaker 1: Swift and talking about her here in the after Party
- 15:23Speaker 1: and also in the little mini episodes we do on
- 15:27Speaker 1: Mondays when I'm unofficially calling the pre party. But anyways,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you know Taylor Swift, the phenomenon that she is. I'm
- 15:34Speaker 1: just I'm intrigued what people are responding to. We got
- 15:37Speaker 1: a text here from eight to six. Oh hey, Jake,
- 15:39Speaker 1: weighing in on the Taylor Swift. She engages with fans
- 15:41Speaker 1: in a way nobody has ever done before. I think
- 15:44Speaker 1: she understands her fans better than any artist in history
- 15:47Speaker 1: and truly enjoys creating an interactive world for the fandom.
- 15:50Speaker 1: The effort she puts in is unparalleled. Thanks for everything
- 15:53Speaker 1: you do, love all the content. Eight six, Oh, I
- 15:56Speaker 1: hear you give me some examples. What exactly what is
- 16:00Speaker 1: the effort that she puts in and what is the
- 16:02Speaker 1: interactive world that is the Taylor Swift fandom. How do you,
- 16:07Speaker 1: as a fan engage with Taylor Swift? That's what I
- 16:10Speaker 1: want to know. Six one seven nine oh six six
- 16:12Speaker 1: six three eight text me back eight six to oh
- 16:14Speaker 1: or hit me with a voicemail. All right, I said, uh,
- 16:19Speaker 1: I said, I said, We're gonna put this one to bed.
- 16:21Speaker 1: But this is a funny text from the three oh three.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Hey Jake Stephanie from the three oh three Billboards top
- 16:26Speaker 1: fifty best Rap Groups of all Time left me highly offended,
- 16:29Speaker 1: especially the top five. My top five best rap groups
- 16:32Speaker 1: of all time. It's number one, NWA, number two, WU Tang,
- 16:37Speaker 1: number three, Public Endemy, number four one DMC, and number
- 16:39Speaker 1: five Beastie Boys. I stand by what I said and
- 16:41Speaker 1: I'll die on this hill. Thanks for your podcast. I
- 16:45Speaker 1: enjoy listening to it every week, especially the bonus episodes. Yeah,
- 16:48Speaker 1: you got a three oh three Rockin' I like that list.
- 16:52Speaker 1: That's a good, good, good list. Sorry, five to four
- 16:54Speaker 1: to oh rights in Thin Lizzie is great. Sex pistols
- 16:57Speaker 1: are great. Yes, members of Thin Lizzie, Paul Cook and
- 16:59Speaker 1: Steve Jones. That is cool, but I digress deuces. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I don't know where this thin Lizzy stuff is coming from.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I don't know. Did I say something, Who's I didn't
- 17:09Speaker 1: say anything about thin Lizzy, And all of a sudden,
- 17:11Speaker 1: I start getting all these texts about din Lizzy and
- 17:13Speaker 1: me not liking them, and I don't know what that's about.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So maybe I said something that sounded like thin Lizzie.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I have no idea. It's bizarre, okay eight one oh? Right, sin,
- 17:23Speaker 1: it's sort of music news for this week. I didn't
- 17:25Speaker 1: know if you saw I did see this what the
- 17:28Speaker 1: eight one I was about to say here, I didn't
- 17:30Speaker 1: know if you saw that Lizzie van Houghton was released
- 17:32Speaker 1: from prison yesterday. She was part of the Charles Manson
- 17:35Speaker 1: family and actively participated in the Healter Skelter murders. Definitely
- 17:39Speaker 1: doesn't deserve to have been released. If you asked me,
- 17:41Speaker 1: thanks for all you do and rock and rolla Dean
- 17:44Speaker 1: Dean from the eight one. Oh, I did see that.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I thought about posting something about that on Instagram and
- 17:50Speaker 1: talking to you guys about it over there, but last
- 17:53Speaker 1: time I made a post about Charles manson Instagram basically
- 17:56Speaker 1: shut my freaking account down, which is ridiculous. So uh yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 1: I guess I can talk about it here. And I
- 18:05Speaker 1: did see this, and I have very mixed feelings about it.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Leslie van Houghton definitely yeah, Manson girl, one of Charlie's
- 18:12Speaker 1: girls and like a for real one, like the one
- 18:15Speaker 1: who was on the inside doing the killing. And uh,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I do have mixed feelings. I mean, I don't know,
- 18:24Speaker 1: this woman's been in prison since the early seventies. This
- 18:28Speaker 1: crime is horrific. How they behaved was barbaric, and some
- 18:32Speaker 1: really innocent people lost their lives and that sucks. On
- 18:36Speaker 1: the other hand, you know this, I go back and
- 18:39Speaker 1: forth in my head all the time, the difference between
- 18:41Speaker 1: the you know, punitive punishment and redemption, and it's, uh,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know, we're all imperfect, and I think our imperfection
- 18:49Speaker 1: sometimes stems to our ability to even figure this stuff out.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Then again, I'm sure there's some of you who are
- 18:53Speaker 1: very black and white about this, and I respect that
- 18:56Speaker 1: as well, and at times I am too. So anyways,
- 18:59Speaker 1: it's an interesting topic. I'm always obsessed with the Manson family.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I saw a picture someone now didn't text it to me,
- 19:07Speaker 1: they sent it to me on Instagram. Today if you
- 19:09Speaker 1: remember in the one of the Manson episodes we did.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I think it might have been one of the Mama
- 19:15Speaker 1: Cass episodes I talk about, or no, it might have
- 19:18Speaker 1: been the Manson episode that the like Charles Manson the
- 19:20Speaker 1: music Man episode of Disgrace Land, I talk about how
- 19:23Speaker 1: Neil Young gifted Charles Manson a motorcycle. And someone found
- 19:29Speaker 1: an image of that of Charlie on this chopper that
- 19:32Speaker 1: Neil Young gave him and sent it to me today
- 19:34Speaker 1: and it's incredible. It's a it's just a shocking image.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I'd post it, but like I said, I'm done fucking
- 19:42Speaker 1: around with the boys at Meta. They don't play all right,
- 19:45Speaker 1: what else we got here? Let's see from the six' five? Oh,

- 22:12Speaker 1: Else what else from ninety? Four who else was on that?
- 22:15Speaker 1: Bill you, KNOW i think what happened. HERE i think

- 22:22Speaker 1: BUT i think what happened ninety Four they started swapping

- 23:54Speaker 1: part the part where we recommend the things that need,
- 23:56Speaker 1: recommending the recommendations. Part What i've been listening to so
- 24:00Speaker 1: the song Grinder man By John Lee. Hooker do you
- 24:03Speaker 1: guys know this? SONG i. DIDN'T i MEAN i have
- 24:07Speaker 1: for a couple of years, now but it's relatively new to.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Me what a strange one from The John Lee hooker.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Archive AND i went back to this song recently Because
- 24:17Speaker 1: i've just GOT i got a lot of baseball on
- 24:18Speaker 1: my mind.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Lately.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Guys i've been talking about baseball to you a little.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Bit i've Been i've been going to, games been to
- 24:23Speaker 1: Two socks games so, far going to A TRIPLE a
- 24:25Speaker 1: game a couple of weeks down In North, carolina And
- 24:32Speaker 1: i'm just baseball right now is better than it's been
- 24:37Speaker 1: in at least a, decade if not. More the rules
- 24:41Speaker 1: changes that they implemented this year have really played out
- 24:46Speaker 1: in a positive and exciting way for. VIEWERS i thought
- 24:49Speaker 1: The All Star game the other night was. AWESOME i
- 24:51Speaker 1: know people were bummed that it, wasn't, like you, know
- 24:54Speaker 1: a big hitting, game BUT i don't mind. THAT i
- 24:56Speaker 1: like pitching in defense. Anyways Grinder man is a baseball.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Song BUT i was going to The Red sox game
- 25:04Speaker 1: on fourth Of july with my, family with my wife
- 25:07Speaker 1: and my two, boys and they're playing The Texas, rangers
- 25:10Speaker 1: AND i was looking for like, these like a baseball
- 25:12Speaker 1: playlist On, spotify and it's just it's there's so you,
- 25:19Speaker 1: know baseball truly, is or at least it Was america's
- 25:23Speaker 1: pastime for the major the bulk Of american modern, history
- 25:30Speaker 1: and it's really reflected in the wide expanse and diversity
- 25:35Speaker 1: and different types of songs that are about. Baseball it's
- 25:40Speaker 1: all over the fucking. Map SO i didn't find the
- 25:43Speaker 1: PLAYLIST i was looking, for BUT i did remember the
- 25:46Speaker 1: song Grinder man By John Lee, hooker which, it's LIKE i,
- 25:50Speaker 1: said it's a weird one From John Lee hooker's. Past
- 25:52Speaker 1: he recorded it With stacks The memphis, label which Was
- 25:57Speaker 1: i'm not exactly sure the history of how that. Happened
- 26:01Speaker 1: the song is so, mean it is so low down
- 26:05Speaker 1: and so, dirty and it just it makes you want
- 26:10Speaker 1: to take a fucking bath after you hear. It that's
- 26:12Speaker 1: the type of song this song.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Is BUT.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I Guess John Lee hooker must have been a baseball,
- 26:21Speaker 1: fan AND i think what a grinder man was at
- 26:24Speaker 1: that time whenever the song was, WRITTEN i don't, know,
- 26:26Speaker 1: Sixties i'm guessing, seventies was a, grinder you, know like they, Say,
- 26:31Speaker 1: hey that guy's a. Grinder he can really grind him,
- 26:33Speaker 1: out grind out at, bats grind out his, hustle who's
- 26:37Speaker 1: running to the base the, first the, second. Whatever i'm
- 26:40Speaker 1: not really sure where the term grinder man fits in
- 26:42Speaker 1: exactly in, baseball BUT i know it is a baseball,
- 26:45Speaker 1: term And John Lee hooker is of course using it
- 26:48Speaker 1: as a way a metaphor for sex and how he
- 26:52Speaker 1: is the grinder, man and it's kind of, funny but
- 26:55Speaker 1: it is set to this incredibly, slinky Grimy John Lee hooker.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Sound it's just fucking. Awesome so check that tune, out all.
- 27:05Speaker 1: RIGHT i know it's a lot about one, song but,
- 27:08Speaker 1: hey trust, me if we were hanging out at a
- 27:09Speaker 1: bar and we were just drinking, beers you, know this
- 27:12Speaker 1: is What i'd be talking. About the other THING i
- 27:14Speaker 1: wanted to talk about, here which is not sort of
- 27:16Speaker 1: as specific and weird as this Obscure John Lee hooker,
- 27:20Speaker 1: tune quite the. Opposite last, NIGHT i was Watching Turner Classic,
- 27:25Speaker 1: movies AS i often do When i'm winding, down and
- 27:31Speaker 1: they run these great bumpers ON, tcm and they were
- 27:35Speaker 1: showing all the upcoming films that they're going to be
- 27:38Speaker 1: playing over the. Summer and one of, them which is
- 27:42Speaker 1: hard for me to think of it as a classic
- 27:43Speaker 1: movie because it's still relatively new compared to the stuff
- 27:45Speaker 1: That Turner Classic movies, plays was almost famous To Cameron
- 27:48Speaker 1: crowe movie About Cameron crow's experience as a young journalist
- 27:52Speaker 1: For Rolling stone back in the, seventies which we've all
- 27:55Speaker 1: seen a thousand, times and we've seen it so, MUCH
- 27:58Speaker 1: i know we have it it's almost not even worth talking.
- 28:01Speaker 1: About but in seeing the, movie in this bumper For
- 28:04Speaker 1: Turner Classic movies with a bunch of other iconic films
- 28:09Speaker 1: edited in and around The Almost famous. Promotion it really struck.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Me and of, course you, know there were sound and
- 28:17Speaker 1: they were playing cuts from, it they were Playing Tiny.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Dancer it really struck me just how iconic this movie.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Is and when it came, OUT i just thought it
- 28:26Speaker 1: was LIKE i thought it was a really cool, movie
- 28:28Speaker 1: really fun, Movie BUT i didn't realize at the time
- 28:34Speaker 1: what it would become and what it would mean to
- 28:36Speaker 1: me now as a guy who's seen this movie a thousand,
- 28:40Speaker 1: Times and it just got me, thinking you, know the
- 28:44Speaker 1: opposite Of, grinderman thinking About grinderman And John Lee, hooker
- 28:48Speaker 1: which is relatively. OBSCURE i mean thinking this is relatively
- 28:52Speaker 1: basic in mainstream line of. Thought but what is the
- 28:57Speaker 1: best movie about? Music and is it almost? Famous you,
- 29:03Speaker 1: Know i'm sitting here asking that, question AND i don't
- 29:07Speaker 1: know That i'm saying, yes BUT i don't know That
- 29:09Speaker 1: i'm saying no, Either so tell me what is the
- 29:13Speaker 1: best movie about? Music is it almost? Famous? Is and
- 29:17Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be a, Biopick it could be
- 29:19Speaker 1: A star Is, born the recent, one The Bradley cooper,
- 29:22Speaker 1: One Lady, gaga that movie is incredible for eight about
- 29:31Speaker 1: ten different reasons that movie ten ten ten different reasons
- 29:34Speaker 1: that are different from the reasons That Almost famous is
- 29:37Speaker 1: an incredible. Movie you, know if you're talking, Biopicks Buddy Holly's,
- 29:41Speaker 1: Story Coal Miner's, daughter there are so many and there
- 29:45Speaker 1: are just so many movies about music. Scripted i'm talking
- 29:48Speaker 1: about non. Documentaries that's a separate. Question so let me.
