Speaker 1: As the Christmas holiday period approached in the winter of
• 0:05
Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, police and Broomfield, Colorado, were dispatched to
• 0:10
Speaker 1: the home of a forty three year old mother who
• 0:12
Speaker 1: had stopped responding to calls and messages from family.
• 0:16
Speaker 2: Hello, oh, I was just on their neighbor.
• 0:19
Speaker 3: And they call you answer though, oh yeah, you sent
• 0:21
  Speaker 3: us as well.
• 0:22
Speaker 1: So officers performing the welfare check made a gruesome discovery.
• 0:28
  Speaker 4: Shit ho shit.
• 0:35
Speaker 1: Christilee Krue was a respected and capable professional, as well
• 0:39
Speaker 1: as a dedicated and busy mother to three children. For months,
• 0:43
Speaker 1: Christile had been enduring a living nightmare, a stalker sending
• 0:48
Speaker 1: shocking and offensive messages and violent threats.
• 0:52
Speaker 5: It's a lot and it has definitely made me like
• 0:55
Speaker 5: parling everywhere and go.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: Unfortunately, only in wake of her death were investigators finally
• 1:02
Speaker 1: able to piece together the clues and reveal the truth
• 1:06
Speaker 1: behind her stalker and her killer.
• 1:12
Speaker 6: Heads on your face.
• 1:16
Speaker 1: Hi there, I'm Kevin, and welcome to Just Thought Lounge.
• 1:20
  Speaker 1: Today's case has a lengthy history. It's a tragic case
• 1:24
Speaker 1: with a horrific discovery, telling clues at the scene, and
• 1:28
Speaker 1: ultimately the unraveling of an intricate, clever but brutal murder plot.
• 1:34
Speaker 1: Let's take a look. Broomfield, Colorado, is located between the
• 1:54
Speaker 1: two larger cities of Denver and Boulder. In the wealthier areas,
• 1:58
Speaker 1: large family homes line the spacious residential streets. December fourteenth,
• 2:05
Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, was a dreary Thursday. The Broomfield Police
• 2:10
Speaker 1: Department received a call that morning to check in on
• 2:12
Speaker 1: a home located on Promontory Loop. The caller told dispatch
• 2:16
Speaker 1: that he had been unable to reach his wife for
• 2:18
Speaker 1: several hours. She had been intending to meet with a
• 2:22
Speaker 1: detective from the Broomfield PD that morning. He said. Her
• 2:25
Speaker 1: last message to him was sent at eight fifty six am,
• 2:29
Speaker 1: roughly twenty minutes after he left for work. She was
• 2:32
Speaker 1: still at the house when he left.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: Hi there, my name is Dan Krug. I don't think
• 2:40
Speaker 2: this is an emergency, but this feels really weird. My
• 2:45
Speaker 2: wife isn't responding to text messages or phone calls.
• 2:51
  Speaker 1: Okay?
• 2:52
Speaker 7: When you talked to her about three hours ago.
• 2:53
  Speaker 4: Was she okay?
• 2:55
  Speaker 8: Was she.
• 2:57
Speaker 9: Things that you can go on?
• 2:59
Speaker 2: She asked me to pick up our daughter from school
• 3:02
Speaker 2: because she had to meet with Martinez, so she.
• 3:07
Speaker 9: Was nice to come into the PD and meet with Martinez.
• 3:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what she said.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: Officer O'Hare of the Broomfield Police went to the address
• 3:17
Speaker 1: on Promontory Loop to check on Christie Krug's welfare. When
• 3:21
Speaker 1: the officer approached the front door, he encountered a friend
• 3:24
Speaker 1: and neighbor who had likewise been sent by a family
• 3:27
Speaker 1: member to check in on Christilee.
• 3:34
Speaker 9: Hello, I was just on their neighbor.
• 3:36
Speaker 3: And oh yeah, he sent us as well, So next, okay,
• 3:45
Speaker 3: all right, man, I appreciate it.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: The sound of barking from Pixel, the family dog, was
• 3:53
Speaker 1: the only noise from within the house. Receiving no response
• 4:07
Speaker 1: at the door, the officer proceeded to the side of
• 4:09
Speaker 1: the house to check if there was a vehicle parked
• 4:11
Speaker 1: in the garage. Unable to see through the high windows,
• 4:17
Speaker 1: O'Hare pulled his patrol car into the drive, stood on
• 4:20
Speaker 1: the front bumper and peered in.
• 4:35
Speaker 3: One fifty one send medical and one ten. I need
• 4:37
Speaker 3: a fourth century. I got a female down in the garage.
• 4:51
Speaker 3: Rotail police, roatail police.
• 4:58
  Speaker 10: Oh shit, mhm.
• 5:01
Speaker 1: At the bottom of the steps on the floor of
• 5:03
Speaker 1: the garage was the mother of three, Christilee Kruge. She
• 5:07
Speaker 1: was bleeding from a wound to the head and unresponsive.
• 5:18
Speaker 3: Thostman said there was a stalker.
• 5:19
Speaker 10: Is there need a kidnapper?
• 5:20
  Speaker 11: So, I don't know.
• 5:26
Speaker 3: No, she's unresponsive. Rabba, guys, I'm just want to look
• 5:38
Speaker 3: at here, hey man, just run interference for me.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: As additional officers responded to the scene, cleared the house
• 5:51
Speaker 1: and blocked off the street, pieces of the story began
• 5:54
Speaker 1: falling into place. At first, O'Hare thought that perhaps Christille
• 5:59
Speaker 1: had been the victim of a horrible accident, a fall
• 6:02
Speaker 1: down the stairs in which she hit her head.
• 6:06
Speaker 11: Well, she's a CPR being done in the garage.
• 6:10
Speaker 10: She's got a good head wound.
• 6:11
Speaker 3: I think it's from falling down, but I'm going to
• 6:13
Speaker 3: reevaluate that right now.
• 6:16
Speaker 1: The officer didn't see any blunt instruments, anything that could
• 6:19
Speaker 1: have been used as a weapon left at the scene.
• 6:22
Speaker 1: After paramedics efforts to revive Cristilee failed, they found that
• 6:26
Speaker 1: the forty three year old had not only suffered trauma
• 6:29
Speaker 1: to her head, but also a single stab wound. It
• 6:34
Speaker 1: was several inches in length, just above her heart. No
• 6:37
Speaker 1: knife was spotted at the scene either.
• 6:40
Speaker 3: All we saw initially which was the head trauma.
• 6:43
Speaker 10: As soon as we cut open our shirt to place
• 6:45
  Speaker 10: the pads.
• 6:45
Speaker 7: Is when we noticed the stab wound.
• 6:46
Speaker 11: Got it okay for her.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: There were no obvious signs of a struggle in the
• 6:52
Speaker 1: form of defensive wounds on Cristilee or a disturbance in
• 6:56
Speaker 1: the house. Aside from the violent scene in the garage,
• 6:59
Speaker 1: the home appeared orderly. Christille's handgun, for which she had
• 7:04
Speaker 1: a concealed carry permit, was located in her purse. She
• 7:08
Speaker 1: had obviously not had an opportunity to retrieve it before
• 7:11
Speaker 1: being incapacitated from the attack. The medical examiner would find
• 7:16
Speaker 1: three distinct points of impact on the back of her head.
• 7:23
Speaker 1: Bits and pieces of information began reaching the responding officers
• 7:27
Speaker 1: explaining Christille's connection to Detective Martinez. At that time, they
• 7:32
Speaker 1: knew only that Christille had reported a stalker, a man
• 7:35
Speaker 1: she believed to be an ex boyfriend who had been
• 7:37
Speaker 1: threatening her in text and emails since early October. The
• 7:41
Speaker 1: case was being handled by Detective Martinez.
• 7:45
Speaker 12: Yeah, I don't know the backstory.
• 7:47
Speaker 11: Husband said there was a a dude who's been stalking
• 7:51
Speaker 11: her and threatened to kidnap her or Martinez was involved,
• 7:56
Speaker 11: and Martinez just said, Hey, this.
• 7:57
  Speaker 6: Is a I don't know.
• 7:59
Speaker 3: I don't know the history on that part.
• 8:00
Speaker 11: Owner Martinez does though, and he said he's coming in,
• 8:03
Speaker 11: so I told him on you can see if Butler
• 8:07
Speaker 11: needs photos with this big old house. Other than that,
• 8:09
Speaker 11: we're just kind of scared in the scene and wait for.
• 8:11
Speaker 6: The detctives, you know.
• 8:12
Speaker 1: There were indications at the scene that the murder had
• 8:15
Speaker 1: been thoughtfully executed. Four home security cameras, which captured most
• 8:20
Speaker 1: of the exterior of the house, had been disabled. Three
• 8:23
Speaker 1: of them had been taken offline that morning sometime around
• 8:26
Speaker 1: eight fifteen am, coming back online just before police responded
• 8:31
Speaker 1: to the house. The only camera that had remained active
• 8:34
Speaker 1: throughout that time period was the garage door view. The
• 8:37
Speaker 1: front door camera was also found to have a piece
• 8:40
Speaker 1: of blue tape placed over its lens around the same
• 8:43
Speaker 1: time as it and two others went offline. When the
• 8:47
Speaker 1: cameras came back on, its view was entirely obscured. Then
• 8:52
Speaker 1: there were questions about the point of entry. The garage
• 8:56
Speaker 1: door could have been forced open, since Christilee was found
• 8:59
Speaker 1: in the garage and had likely been taken by surprise,
• 9:02
Speaker 1: this seemed like a logical deduction, though upon closer inspection
• 9:07
Speaker 1: it seemed that Christie had been alone inside the home
• 9:11
Speaker 1: with the door unlocked, or she unlocked the door for
• 9:15
  Speaker 1: her attacker.
• 9:17
  Speaker 3: I kicked that's interesting.
• 9:21
Speaker 11: That is very interesting, almost like dude might stuck around
• 9:25
Speaker 11: from this way, and.
• 9:28
Speaker 6: I wonder if maybe the door was unlocked.
• 9:30
Speaker 10: That's how we got in, you know, So I don't know.
• 9:37
Speaker 11: I kicked it and it went pretty easy.
• 9:39
Speaker 6: So I'm gonna take no, it wasn't.
• 9:44
  Speaker 13: Unlocked.
• 9:48
Speaker 7: Yeah, you know what.
• 9:49
Speaker 11: That bottom one does not even lock, so there's there's
• 9:52
Speaker 11: no way to lock the bottom door.
• 9:54
Speaker 3: It's all dead bolt right away. Saw her on the ground.
• 9:59
Speaker 11: The looks mere on the wall. I can't run here.
• 10:02
Speaker 3: And the garage door looked for weird. Let's look at it.
• 10:06
Speaker 11: It looks not forced entry weird, but not proper alignment
• 10:10
Speaker 11: weird either, see what I'm talking about.
• 10:13
Speaker 3: It looks like maybe it's just I don't know, dude,
• 10:18
Speaker 3: just when you were in the house when he did
• 10:19
  Speaker 3: he swept.
• 10:20
Speaker 11: The house, Yeah, we did, and I didn't see anything
• 10:24
Speaker 11: like disturbance wise or anything of the house. Outside of
• 10:26
Speaker 11: the garage is her car keys, and looked like she
• 10:29
Speaker 11: would just leave it unless she maybe got rised at
• 10:33
  Speaker 11: the front door.
• 10:33
Speaker 3: And ran that way.
• 10:35
Speaker 10: I don't know, but her car keys were at her
• 10:38
Speaker 10: side or a set anything else on the inside?
• 10:42
Speaker 3: No, nothing of note.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: As detectives took stock of the evidence, Daniel Krug, who
• 10:48
Speaker 1: had initially called for the welfare check on his wife,
• 10:51
  Speaker 1: arrived unseen.
• 10:52
Speaker 3: Stay back, stay back, stay back, stay back.
• 10:57
Speaker 11: Uh to get his phone away from him because he's
• 11:02
Speaker 11: probably access to this camera and I obviously don't want
• 11:04
Speaker 11: him how to look at it.
• 11:07
Speaker 1: Other family members had also arrived at the house. Christelle's mother, Linda,
• 11:12
Speaker 1: who had been contacted by Dan directly, arrived shortly after
• 11:16
Speaker 1: Officer O'Hare. She was joined by her son and daughter
• 11:19
Speaker 1: in law, as well as the friend and neighbor who
• 11:21
Speaker 1: was at the house when the officer arrived. As the
• 11:24
Speaker 1: family grieved in the street, Dan gave police permission to
• 11:27
Speaker 1: begin searching the house.
• 11:30
Speaker 6: I know it seems like a wrong time, but it's
• 11:33
Speaker 6: no time like man really like except such residence that
• 11:36
Speaker 6: you can be investige with a benefax.
• 11:39
Speaker 7: Yes, go go cold, you understand your masculine.
• 11:42
  Speaker 3: No, but go.
• 11:49
Speaker 1: Inside the house, investigators found the meticulously documented evidence Christie
• 11:54
Speaker 1: had compiled on her stalker. The forty three year old
• 11:58
Speaker 1: worked as a project manager at a large technology company
• 12:01
Speaker 1: based out of Boulder. Christile had always distinguished herself intellectually,
• 12:06
Speaker 1: having earned a bachelor's degree in biochemical engineering and moving
• 12:10
Speaker 1: on to an accomplished career in the tech sector. Beginning
• 12:13
Speaker 1: in early October, when she began receiving unwanted text messages
• 12:17
Speaker 1: in emails from an old college boyfriend, her instinct was
• 12:21
Speaker 1: to record and document everything. Her diary contained entries detailing
• 12:26
Speaker 1: each communication, the different phone numbers used by her stocker,
• 12:30
Speaker 1: various email addresses, and other details. She also took steps
• 12:34
Speaker 1: to protect herself. She purchased a gun, took training classes,
• 12:39
Speaker 1: and began to carry her weapon with her whenever she
• 12:42
Speaker 1: left the house. Investigators found a gun safe in the
• 12:49
Speaker 1: corner of the basement. There was a twenty two caliber rifle,
• 12:53
Speaker 1: three swords, and a handgun lock box. After the threats started,
• 12:58
Speaker 1: Christile had three more care installed around the exterior of
• 13:02
Speaker 1: the house, in addition to the existing doorbell, camera, and
• 13:05
Speaker 1: lights added to illuminate the property. She established a buddy system.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: When she went out to run Errand's, she shared her
• 13:13
Speaker 1: phone location with family members. She also spoke with neighbors
• 13:17
Speaker 1: explaining her situation and what to keep an eye out for.
• 13:21
Speaker 1: Throughout the month, the messages escalated into overt threats against
• 13:25
Speaker 1: herself and her husband. On Halloween, she received an email
• 13:30
Speaker 1: which contained a photo of Dan appearing to be outside
• 13:33
Speaker 1: of his workplace at the Colorado Department of Public Health,
• 13:36
Speaker 1: where he held a role in finance. Along with the
• 13:39
Speaker 1: photo was a note this year husband, he needs to
• 13:43
Speaker 1: drive safe. Don't want a clear rubber hose in his tailpipe?
• 13:50
Speaker 9: Yes, hi, there, I need to record threatening emails and
• 13:54
Speaker 9: boone calls from a stocking ex and just didn't know
• 13:59
Speaker 9: what you go propriate course?
• 14:00
  Speaker 4: Here?
• 14:01
Speaker 14: Do you live at room Field?
• 14:02
Speaker 9: I live in Broomfield. I have no idea where he is.
• 14:05
  Speaker 14: That's okay.
• 14:06
  Speaker 13: What's your address?
• 14:08
Speaker 9: Is there a training order in place.
• 14:09
  Speaker 14: Between you two?
• 14:11
Speaker 9: There's not that. I would definitely be curious for getting one,
• 14:13
Speaker 9: consideringtons with violence against both me and my family.
• 14:17
Speaker 14: Okay, And it's a text fastice phone call.
• 14:21
Speaker 9: I have text messages and an email today that had
• 14:25
Speaker 9: a picture of my husband threatening to put something in
• 14:28
  Speaker 9: his tail pipe.
• 14:29
Speaker 1: After a message was left indicating that her stalker had
• 14:33
Speaker 1: deposited a bodily fluid on her car while she was
• 14:36
Speaker 1: seeing her dentist, Christilee had a Broomfield officer come to
• 14:39
  Speaker 1: the house.
• 14:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, Marcino, so I kind of an idea, what's going on?
• 14:47
  Speaker 13: Yes, I fall.
• 14:48
Speaker 9: I did not see a marketing on the.
• 14:53
  Speaker 2: Dirt.
• 15:03
Speaker 10: You know this is right that if somebody goes through
• 15:05
Speaker 10: something weird like this, it's usually obviously I guess.
• 15:11
  Speaker 3: Yeah, sometimes yes.
• 15:16
Speaker 1: In that instance, neither Christille nor the officer saw any
• 15:20
Speaker 1: sign that the stalker had done what he had claimed
• 15:23
Speaker 1: to her car. Nonetheless, this incident was reported along with
• 15:28
Speaker 1: the others. When she sat down with Detective Martinez, Christilee
• 15:37
Speaker 1: explained that her stalker called himself Anthony, an ex college
• 15:41
Speaker 1: boyfriend whom she had not seen in person in over
• 15:44
  Speaker 1: twenty years.
• 15:47
Speaker 5: Okay, we dated its summer of ninety nine very briefly,
• 15:54
Speaker 5: like there was a break up somewhere here, like in the.
• 15:56
Speaker 6: Pulse, I did this kind of like somebody way rare.
• 16:00
Speaker 5: Last contact I ever had with him when he tried
• 16:02
Speaker 5: to reach out to me personally, saw him in person,
• 16:05
Speaker 5: would have been like in the spring.
• 16:06
Speaker 6: Of two thousand and one.
• 16:07
Speaker 5: Everything here the same question marks because I'm like about
• 16:11
Speaker 5: I'm just trying to remember, like where I was living
• 16:14
  Speaker 5: and where.
• 16:15
Speaker 6: I had kids at the time, so I put everything in.
• 16:17
Speaker 5: Green where they're like just like little teeny things.
• 16:20
Speaker 6: It's like, Okay, how are you doing?
• 16:22
Speaker 5: Found me on old information, so it's public information. Technically
• 16:26
Speaker 5: I can't say that, like he found me in a
• 16:28
  Speaker 5: special way.
• 16:29
Speaker 6: But it was years later, right that.
• 16:31
Speaker 5: He came back with a quick email trying to check in.
• 16:33
Speaker 5: And these events here last maybe like within a period
• 16:37
Speaker 5: a couple of weeks.
• 16:38
Speaker 6: Usually it's a handful of email messages.
• 16:41
Speaker 5: Usually it's just like light easy, like what's going on, yeah,
• 16:45
Speaker 5: like trying to like yeah, just kind of start a conversation,
• 16:48
Speaker 5: but it's all light, cordial whatever.
• 16:50
Speaker 6: He says, let's get together. I'm like, no, here he says,
• 16:55
  Speaker 6: let's get together.
• 16:56
  Speaker 5: I'm like, I have a I have a serious boyfriend,
• 16:58
Speaker 5: like we were living together at this time, and he's like,
• 17:01
Speaker 5: screw your boyfriend. And then yeah, I'm here in two
• 17:03
Speaker 5: thousand and seven, he's.
• 17:04
Speaker 6: Reaching out to me. You can see I have a kid.
• 17:06
Speaker 6: This is my profile picture of my kid.
• 17:09
Speaker 5: I'm like, I have a family now, and then again
• 17:12
Speaker 5: where I'm like, I'm married with children all over here.
• 17:17
Speaker 1: Throughout the years, Anthony would reach out to inquire whether
• 17:20
Speaker 1: Christille was interested in meeting with him, she always refused.
• 17:25
Speaker 1: In two thousand and seven, after meeting years before online,
• 17:28
Speaker 1: she married Dan. They went on to have three children.
• 17:32
Speaker 1: At the time of her death, they were aged fourteen, eleven,
• 17:35
Speaker 1: and eight. Christille told detective Martinez that the only good
• 17:39
Speaker 1: thing about her circumstance was that her stalker appeared completely
• 17:43
Speaker 1: disinterested in her children. In all of his unhinged messages
• 17:47
Speaker 1: to her, he had never once mentioned them. Before the
• 17:54
Speaker 1: stalking began, there had been some concern that someone had
• 17:57
Speaker 1: tried to gain entry to the krug family home through
• 18:01
Speaker 1: their garage. In September of that year, Dan returned home
• 18:05
Speaker 1: to find an unknown individual running from the property.
• 18:09
Speaker 5: I don't think it's related, but there was my husband
• 18:12
Speaker 5: caught somebody going through a garage that he came home
• 18:15
Speaker 5: and rush shore sou that he caught.
• 18:16
Speaker 6: Somebody running out of a garage.
• 18:18
Speaker 5: We subsequently installed two more cameras on our property so
• 18:22
Speaker 5: I get notifications of anybody that's like walking and driving.
• 18:27
Speaker 4: Yes, hi there, my name is Dan Kruge. I am
• 18:34
Speaker 4: a little late, but I'm reporting a tres passer on
• 18:37
  Speaker 4: my property.
• 18:38
Speaker 2: What happened about four fifty or so I was returning
• 18:45
Speaker 2: home from the store. My garage door was open. As
• 18:48
Speaker 2: I approached it. Someone ran out and ran through my
• 18:54
Speaker 2: backyard and got away. So that's that's really all I have.
• 19:00
  Speaker 13: To go on.
• 19:01
Speaker 9: Have you noticed if anything with missing?
• 19:05
Speaker 2: Uh, the only thing I think is missing was a
• 19:07
Speaker 2: spare house key. Do you think that that's person possibly ticket?
• 19:13
Speaker 2: That's the best guest of my wife Maya.
• 19:17
Speaker 1: In November, Dan also sat down with the detective after
• 19:20
Speaker 1: his wife had received the email on Halloween threatening him directly.
• 19:25
Speaker 1: She filled him in on the situation. By the time
• 19:28
Speaker 1: of her death, they had both been emotionally traumatized from
• 19:32
Speaker 1: weeks of threats and uncertainty.
• 19:35
Speaker 8: Largely, I've been focused on her and the kids, and
• 19:40
  Speaker 8: I've been.
• 19:40
Speaker 6: Hold up the house.
• 19:41
Speaker 7: Yeah, how's the grocery store?
• 19:48
Speaker 6: Briefly on Tuesday and someone behind me dropped can paddicked?
• 20:02
  Speaker 6: Am I doing? I'm petick?
• 20:06
Speaker 7: How I'm doing a ship protecting my life, And.
• 20:20
Speaker 5: I keep trying to remind myself this is intending to
• 20:22
Speaker 5: be terrorizing, This is intending to scare.
• 20:24
Speaker 6: Me, so I can.
• 20:27
Speaker 7: Intension to make your life viserable and cause disruption, some
• 20:32
Speaker 7: sort of emotional turmoil exactly what he's going for.
• 20:41
Speaker 1: The couple's emotional turmoil and fears over the stocking seemed
• 20:45
Speaker 1: to culminate in the worst possible outcome. Only weeks later,
• 20:49
Speaker 1: in December this, Dan was escorted to the police station
• 21:06
Speaker 1: by a victim's advocate and placed in a soft room
• 21:09
  Speaker 1: for questioning.
• 21:29
  Speaker 13: Answer.
• 21:30
Speaker 1: While he consoled Dan, Detective Martinez awaited the results of
• 21:34
Speaker 1: expedited search warrants on the stalkers data. This included the
• 21:39
Speaker 1: origins of the email addresses and phone numbers used to
• 21:42
Speaker 1: communicate with Christelle, information that could prove the stalker's identity
• 21:47
Speaker 1: and hopefully locate him. Although the information had already been
• 21:51
Speaker 1: requested weeks earlier, it took the unfortunate event of Christille's
• 21:55
Speaker 1: murder to force a rapid response to these warrants. In addition,
• 22:00
Speaker 1: detectives were busy searching through Christille's cell phone and items
• 22:04
Speaker 1: from inside the house. Dan helpfully ran through the home
• 22:07
Speaker 1: security system with the detectives. Cameras captured Christilee leaving to
• 22:12
Speaker 1: drop off the children before eight am that morning, then
• 22:15
Speaker 1: returning and backing her car into the garage at seven
• 22:19
Speaker 1: fifty seven. The front side and back door cameras were
• 22:23
Speaker 1: disabled at eight fifteen. In Christille's phone, investigators located two
• 22:28
Speaker 1: unsent text messages. The first from eight nineteen. It was
• 22:32
Speaker 1: intended for Detective Martinez and read, I can't do this anymore.
• 22:37
Speaker 1: I confess I've had an affair for eighteen months. We
• 22:42
Speaker 1: framed Anthony and pushed it on Dan. I just broke
• 22:45
Speaker 1: up with my boyfriend and were coming to the station
• 22:48
Speaker 1: to give statements. Be there in thirty minutes. The second message,
• 22:54
Speaker 1: also not sent, was for Christille's brother Lars. I can't
• 22:59
Speaker 1: keep up the lies. I had an affair for eighteen months.
• 23:02
Speaker 1: We framed Anthony. I just confessed to Martinez my now
• 23:07
Speaker 1: ex boyfriend, and I are going there now, pushed Dan
• 23:11
Speaker 1: to not press charges. Ostensibly unaware of these unsent texts,
• 23:17
Speaker 1: Dan told Martinez that he suspected Christilee was not being
• 23:21
Speaker 1: truthful with him. She had withheld the information about her
• 23:24
Speaker 1: stalker from him for nearly a month. When she finally
• 23:28
Speaker 1: told him, He nicknamed him the kickman because in part
• 23:32
Speaker 1: he wanted to kick him out of their lives.
• 23:37
Speaker 6: She was cheap and seekers.
• 23:40
Speaker 7: All tell us your as hours early coming home. Ass
• 24:00
Speaker 7: Yes que, she truly.
• 24:05
Speaker 6: Too, I asked, she.
• 24:12
Speaker 1: Said, while detectives continued to speak delicately with Dan Krug.
• 24:18
Speaker 1: Information from the scene and their warrants was pouring in.
• 24:23
Speaker 1: Along with the many notes that Christile had written about
• 24:26
Speaker 1: her stalker were ones revealing the state of her marriage.
• 24:30
Speaker 1: She wrote that she wanted a divorce, she did not
• 24:33
Speaker 1: trust her husband with the children, and she no longer
• 24:36
Speaker 1: loved him. However, there was nothing in her handwriting suggesting
• 24:41
Speaker 1: that she was having an affair. One minute after the
• 24:45
Speaker 1: text was typed out for her brother confessing to one,
• 24:48
Speaker 1: Christile's phone was powered off. The only camera that remained
• 24:52
Speaker 1: online showed Dan leaving for work two minutes later at
• 24:56
Speaker 1: eight twenty four. The last communication sent from christ Steele's
• 25:00
Speaker 1: phone was much later, at eight fifty six. That was
• 25:04
Speaker 1: the message to Dan asking him to collect their daughter.
• 25:07
Speaker 1: Later that day, When detectives returned to the room to
• 25:14
Speaker 1: speak with Dan further, they read him his Miranda rights.
• 25:18
Speaker 1: Dan joked that since his brother married a prosecutor, her
• 25:21
Speaker 1: voice was in his head telling him to ask for
• 25:24
  Speaker 1: a lawyer.
• 25:25
Speaker 12: He didn't typical call fish and he married a prosecutor,
• 25:31
Speaker 12: So I had Lid's voice in my head going get
• 25:35
  Speaker 12: a fucking wire.
• 25:42
  Speaker 6: I don't want I don't want you.
• 25:47
Speaker 1: The detectives began by asking Dan to detail the trouble
• 25:50
Speaker 1: in his marriage. They were keen to understand whether the
• 25:53
Speaker 1: concern created by Christielee Stalker had caused the couple to
• 25:57
  Speaker 1: grow closer.
• 25:59
Speaker 6: You guys close or not.
• 26:00
Speaker 15: Maybe emotionally closer, but you guys are physically sort of
• 26:04
Speaker 15: working on things besides.
• 26:07
Speaker 6: Your kids. There was a mutual yeah, there was.
• 26:15
Speaker 8: Over the course of November, there was a a better
• 26:21
  Speaker 8: team feel.
• 26:24
Speaker 7: Okay, they respond to crisis.
• 26:30
Speaker 8: I had her as a partner to protect the family,
• 26:38
Speaker 8: but it didn't feel like a partner who.
• 26:47
Speaker 15: Value I mean, it felt like it sounds like you fit.
• 26:51
Speaker 6: You feel like you were completely I.
• 26:54
Speaker 15: Don't know, written off by her or that you she
• 26:57
Speaker 15: has zero care for you anymore.
• 27:01
  Speaker 8: I mean.
• 27:06
Speaker 6: I loved her for years.
• 27:12
Speaker 1: Dan was asked to walk the detectives through what he
• 27:14
Speaker 1: thought could have occurred that morning I left.
• 27:19
Speaker 8: She was in the kitchen, she would have had whatever meeting,
• 27:23
Speaker 8: says she had, and then she.
• 27:25
Speaker 6: Says she was meeting with you. But you know nothing
• 27:28
Speaker 6: about that. So I've known you.
• 27:29
Speaker 2: What I tell you?
• 27:31
Speaker 6: What the fuck that is? What's his name? The other detective.
• 27:38
Speaker 8: Uh said that the cameras were turned off.
• 27:47
Speaker 6: That shouldn't happen. The only way that the cameras we
• 27:54
Speaker 6: turned off is through the app one of us.
• 27:59
Speaker 7: Has it hit the bottom.
• 28:05
Speaker 6: Someone came to the door. She doesn't usually answer the door,
• 28:15
Speaker 6: but she must have, because she must have so in Libran,
• 28:24
Speaker 6: the story that I have is someone came to the door,
• 28:27
Speaker 6: and maybe she went outside.
• 28:30
Speaker 7: To get a package, and they must have come in.
• 28:39
Speaker 7: You think either she was taken off guard or or
• 28:42
Speaker 7: somebody familiar to her. I don't know who, how familiar
• 28:49
Speaker 7: would have been she had who had been taken off guard.
• 28:57
Speaker 1: While Dan sat with the detectives offering the of the murder,
• 29:01
Speaker 1: he was unaware that Martinez had managed to track down
• 29:04
Speaker 1: Christile's alleged stalker weeks before the detective needed the search
• 29:09
Speaker 1: warrants to come through, linking the threatening messages to Anthony
• 29:13
Speaker 1: or to someone else. That afternoon, officers in Anthony's home
• 29:18
Speaker 1: state of Utah paid him a visit at his home,
• 29:20
Speaker 1: which was more than a six hour drive to Broomfield.
• 29:24
Speaker 1: They confirmed he had been at work until nine forty
• 29:27
Speaker 1: five the night before the next day, when Christilee was killed,
• 29:32
Speaker 1: he was shopping with his wife until one point thirty.
• 29:35
Speaker 1: His alibi was confirmed by witnesses, store cameras, and license
• 29:39
Speaker 1: plate readers. There was no way that Anthony, the man
• 29:43
Speaker 1: Dan called Kickman, committed the murder.
• 29:50
  Speaker 12: We had already.
• 29:50
Speaker 7: Spoken with Anthony commission a way that used town today.
• 30:00
  Speaker 14: Have you fucking.
• 30:05
Speaker 6: Terrified to bring the ship?
• 30:10
Speaker 1: Data from the search warrants confirmed what the detective had suspected.
• 30:14
Speaker 1: Multiple emails sent to Christie had originated from an IP
• 30:18
Speaker 1: address registered to the Colorado General Government in Greenwood Village,
• 30:23
  Speaker 1: Dan Krug's workplace.
• 30:27
Speaker 15: The Gmail account that.
• 30:31
Speaker 7: And you can see more specifically in the text now
• 30:34
Speaker 7: number we were talking about the number that he initially
• 30:36
  Speaker 7: tested Christie from.
• 30:40
Speaker 6: The Gmail account, the kick Command account that.
• 30:42
Speaker 7: You guys initially received with the photo of you in it,
• 30:46
Speaker 7: and the phone number. Those originated through their IP addresses
• 30:52
  Speaker 7: at your office.
• 30:56
Speaker 6: As far as we know right now, there's no physical
• 30:58
Speaker 6: waited that King Man could have been involved in this
• 31:02
Speaker 6: case on where he's at right now.
• 31:06
Speaker 15: So you know, the mystery continues, and.
• 31:12
Speaker 7: Things are certainly pointing in one direction right now.
• 31:19
Speaker 6: All the time, you've been looking through him because the protection.
• 31:24
Speaker 7: And he just felt him definitely, So I've been looking
• 31:31
Speaker 7: at you, but I've been waiting for these records to
• 31:35
  Speaker 7: come back.
• 31:37
Speaker 1: As the interview progressed, Dan became increasingly quiet and still.
• 31:42
Speaker 1: He spoke slower, claiming to be in a state of
• 31:45
Speaker 1: emotional and physical exhaustion from the day's events. Instead of
• 31:49
Speaker 1: offering a fiery defense of his innocence, he seemed to
• 31:52
Speaker 1: struggle to summon the energy to respond to the detective's
• 31:55
Speaker 1: assertions at all. They posited that Dan was the alleged
• 32:00
Speaker 1: stalker that he had hoped the fabricated threat to his
• 32:03
Speaker 1: wife would cause her to run to him for safety
• 32:06
Speaker 1: and protection, drawing them closer together. Instead, she kept it
• 32:12
Speaker 1: from him for nearly a month. She took steps to
• 32:15
Speaker 1: protect herself, enrolled in self defense classes, purchased and trained
• 32:19
Speaker 1: with her handgun, maintained a meticulous stalker log and communication
• 32:23
Speaker 1: with police, and she coordinated with trusted family members and friends.
• 32:30
Speaker 7: You don't get the response and the openness you once
• 32:33
Speaker 7: did for about twenty eight days from October second to
• 32:38
Speaker 7: October thirty first, So you.
• 32:42
Speaker 6: Ammed it up a little bit. Send a photo of
• 32:45
  Speaker 6: yourself to.
• 32:47
Speaker 7: An account you created.
• 32:50
Speaker 6: See whatever response is. I agree that conclusion that a
• 32:55
Speaker 6: lot of this stocking stuff in this report.
• 32:57
Speaker 15: That you guys that of this kick came in has
• 33:00
Speaker 15: brought you closer and maybe given a little bit of
• 33:04
Speaker 15: hope in your relationship that you can accomplish something together.
• 33:14
Speaker 16: I don't know where you're going, what happens you're using this,
• 33:20
Speaker 16: I'm sure kind of using this circumstance to bring you
• 33:23
  Speaker 16: guys closer together.
• 33:25
Speaker 7: You yourself said that having the common goal of circling the
• 33:31
Speaker 7: labs and something along the lines that it felt like we.
• 33:34
Speaker 6: Had more team one, right.
• 33:36
Speaker 8: I think there's a big, big gap between teamwork and.
• 33:46
  Speaker 6: Rekindlings.
• 33:50
Speaker 1: Dan spent roughly four hours at the police station that
• 33:53
Speaker 1: day before declaring that he was finished with questioning.
• 34:01
Speaker 7: My thoughts, the blessing that we're going to do before
• 34:09
Speaker 7: before we get to that point, as we need to
• 34:10
  Speaker 7: process you before.
• 34:13
Speaker 1: Forensic experts processing Dan's clothing found no blood residue. Similarly,
• 34:18
Speaker 1: teams sent to search the vehicle he had driven to
• 34:21
Speaker 1: work that day returned to nothing of evidentiary value. They
• 34:24
Speaker 1: had been unable to isolate a cleanup at the scene
• 34:28
Speaker 1: or definitively point to a murder weapon. If Dan Krug
• 34:32
Speaker 1: was the killer, it was likely to be digital evidence
• 34:36
Speaker 1: not physical, that would prove his guilt. As Dan awaited
• 34:43
Speaker 1: a ride from the station following his questioning, he pled
• 34:46
Speaker 1: with Martinez to find the man who murdered his wife
• 34:51
  Speaker 1: as as.
• 34:54
Speaker 6: As your father, not as.
• 35:03
Speaker 12: Poison family, almost respect. I don't care if you capture
• 35:12
Speaker 12: I just love the flickery.
• 35:13
Speaker 6: May he took my children's mother.
• 35:20
  Speaker 1: For Christmas?
• 35:29
Speaker 6: Fire ass don't just assume as me. Keep looking.
• 35:44
Speaker 1: Over the following two days, the crime scene was thoroughly processed,
• 35:49
Speaker 1: so too was Christille's car, as well as Dan's office
• 35:52
Speaker 1: at the state government building. Further digital evidence was compiled
• 35:56
Speaker 1: from Dan's laptop and cell phone. Those closest to Steel
• 36:00
Speaker 1: reached out with their own theories, including her mother, Linda.
• 36:04
Speaker 1: Linda expressed concern that in the chaos and distress on
• 36:08
Speaker 1: the day of the murder, she had neglected to convey
• 36:10
Speaker 1: key facts to investigators, primarily about her daughter's husband.
• 36:16
Speaker 13: Just tell me what's on your mind. Okay, so you know,
• 36:22
Speaker 13: setting aside because we all know, well, we all know
• 36:26
Speaker 13: that Dan's under suspicion. So just setting aside the culprit.
• 36:34
Speaker 13: My daughter was going to get divorced from Dan, Okay,
• 36:37
Speaker 13: she couldn't, She couldn't stand him. He was just he
• 36:41
Speaker 13: was just he was too volatile with the kids. And
• 36:44
Speaker 13: she told me that she was going to just live
• 36:46
Speaker 13: in the basement because she couldn't she couldn't get enough
• 36:50
Speaker 13: proof that Dan was being volatile to the kids. And
• 36:54
Speaker 13: so I don't know if I said, did I say that,
• 36:56
Speaker 13: or did somebody said that.
• 36:57
  Speaker 9: I don't know you did.
• 36:58
Speaker 13: I mean, I just I'm just nervous about this and
• 37:04
Speaker 13: just some of the conversations that we're having.
• 37:06
Speaker 14: With him, you know, wanting to get rid of all
• 37:08
  Speaker 14: our stuff.
• 37:08
Speaker 15: And I can see a little bit more insight on
• 37:10
Speaker 15: that with what kind of conversations have you had with
• 37:13
Speaker 15: Dan's following on Thursday.
• 37:15
Speaker 13: Well, just just the one that was really troubling me
• 37:19
Speaker 13: was just the fact that he, you know, was talking
• 37:22
Speaker 13: about getting rid of he wants to sell the house.
• 37:25
Speaker 9: And I understand it.
• 37:26
Speaker 13: Here's the thing, everything he says could be justified away, right,
• 37:31
Speaker 13: And now I know was my daughter's frustration, because Dan
• 37:34
Speaker 13: can be pretty manipulent, that's just his kind of character.
• 37:40
Speaker 13: But what really struck me is that he was talking
• 37:42
Speaker 13: about throwing her things out, you know, and I can
• 37:46
Speaker 13: get rid of her, you know, he actually said, I
• 37:49
Speaker 13: get rid of her bras and underwear and you know,
• 37:52
Speaker 13: grip t shirts and whatever.
• 37:54
Speaker 14: And you know, we can put the dresses and shoes
• 37:56
  Speaker 14: that the kids.
• 37:56
Speaker 13: Love down away and zipper them away. And you know,
• 37:59
Speaker 13: this maybe just Dan's way. He's quirky and weird. I'm
• 38:04
Speaker 13: dealing with it, but it just did not sat right
• 38:07
Speaker 13: with me at all.
• 38:08
Speaker 1: Linda questioned why Dan had chosen to call her directly
• 38:11
Speaker 1: that morning to check on Christilee. He had never done
• 38:14
Speaker 1: so previously, always preferring to contact Christille's brother or his
• 38:19
Speaker 1: sister in law if he needed to reach out to family.
• 38:22
Speaker 1: She told the detective that she did not wish to
• 38:24
Speaker 1: falsely accuse Dan, but that she believed he had a
• 38:28
Speaker 1: motive when he was speaking with her.
• 38:31
Speaker 14: I know what you mean by that, Well, he tries
• 38:34
Speaker 14: to make you feel that he's the victim and that
• 38:39
Speaker 14: you're wrong, and you know, there's just there almost some time,
• 38:43
Speaker 14: he get really syrup.
• 38:45
Speaker 13: He's sweet, but you can see and feel underneath this
• 38:49
Speaker 13: kind of menacing type attitude. Okay, so it's just it
• 38:55
Speaker 13: doesn't feel good right. You can tell he's seeding with anger,
• 38:58
Speaker 13: you know, and the dogs next would always barket him.
• 39:01
Speaker 13: We should always tell when Dan was about to blow.
• 39:04
Speaker 2: Just be excel his parking like.
• 39:05
  Speaker 6: Crazy Adam.
• 39:09
Speaker 1: Linda's intuition proved correct. Detectives were able to trace the
• 39:13
Speaker 1: phone numbers used by Christille Stalker to Burner phones purchased
• 39:17
Speaker 1: with gift cards. These store purchases were then linked to
• 39:21
Speaker 1: Dan through location tracking on his personal cell phone. His
• 39:24
Speaker 1: phone also revealed a curious search history from around nine
• 39:28
Speaker 1: pm on the night before his wife was killed. At
• 39:32
Speaker 1: eight fifty five, Dan searched how hard would you have
• 39:35
Speaker 1: to hit someone on the head to make them unconscious?
• 39:38
Speaker 1: How durable is the human head to withstand trauma? Two
• 39:43
Speaker 1: minutes later, he searched how hard a hit for head
• 39:45
Speaker 1: trauma to go unconscious? But that was not all. The
• 39:50
Speaker 1: final text message sent from Christille's cell phone was timestamped
• 39:54
Speaker 1: at eight fifty six am, over twenty minutes after Dan
• 39:58
Speaker 1: was captured by the only working Ston security camera leaving
• 40:01
Speaker 1: for work. Data analysis showed that Christilee's phone was powered
• 40:06
Speaker 1: off and inactive at the time that message was sent.
• 40:10
Speaker 1: This meant that she could not have typed and sent
• 40:13
Speaker 1: it after her husband left for work. It had been
• 40:16
Speaker 1: scheduled by someone much earlier to send to Dan's device
• 40:21
Speaker 1: after he had left the house. Broomfield police collected hundreds
• 40:33
Speaker 1: of hours of home security footage from neighboring homes covering
• 40:36
Speaker 1: the early morning hours to afternoon period on the day
• 40:39
Speaker 1: of the murder. They noted every vehicle that passed near
• 40:42
Speaker 1: to the house on Promontory Loop. They looked at every
• 40:45
Speaker 1: individual on the street. Though the killer had disabled the
• 40:49
Speaker 1: cameras at the Crew House, it would have been nearly
• 40:52
Speaker 1: impossible to avoid being captured by any of the dozens

Speaker 1: of other cameras that covered the surrounding area. No one
• 40:59
Speaker 1: was captured approaching the house that morning. The killer must
• 41:03
Speaker 1: have already been inside. On December sixteenth, two days after
• 41:12
Speaker 1: the murder, Dan Krug was surrounded by law enforcement in
• 41:16
Speaker 1: the parking lot of the King Supers in Broomfield.
• 41:21
Speaker 3: Heads on your face, Your heads on your face.
• 41:32
Speaker 1: From Dan's pocket, police pulled a handwritten note. It was
• 41:35
Speaker 1: addressed to his mother. He wrote of being lied to
• 41:39
Speaker 1: and used. He stated that his conscience was clear. He
• 41:43
  Speaker 1: declared his innocence.
• 41:45
Speaker 6: You need to tell your kids that you killed their mother,
• 41:48
Speaker 6: or do you want somebody else to? Okay?
• 41:54
  Speaker 14: Sure, looks.
• 42:01
Speaker 1: Dan refused to speak with police. After his arrest, he
• 42:05
Speaker 1: was charged with first degree murder and pleaded not guilty.
• 42:12
Speaker 1: Daniel Krug went to trial in April twenty twenty five.
• 42:16
Speaker 1: His defense argued that there was no physical evidence linking
• 42:19
Speaker 1: Dan to the crime, the case was circumstantial, and in
• 42:23
Speaker 1: their opinion week the state pointed to Dan's motive, the
• 42:27
Speaker 1: digital evidence linking him to the stocking, the disabled security cameras,
• 42:32
Speaker 1: and the cleverly scheduled text message from Christille's phone that
• 42:36
Speaker 1: had been intended to be his alibi.
• 42:38
Speaker 17: We know the physical evidence, and there is an enormous
• 42:43
Speaker 17: disconnect between that and the circumstantial picture. The prosecution wants
• 42:49
Speaker 17: you to believe. Mister Krug did not kill his wife.
• 42:55
Speaker 17: He did not commit these crimes.
• 42:58
Speaker 18: This was about Dan losing control. He was not in
• 43:01
Speaker 18: love with Christille, and that resentment had turned to rage
• 43:05
Speaker 18: by the time we get to December fourteenth. Think about
• 43:08
Speaker 18: what he did to her. You don't do that to
• 43:10
Speaker 18: somebody you love. Think about the absolute nightmare and hell
• 43:14
Speaker 18: that he made the last few months of her life.
• 43:20
Speaker 1: The jury deliberated for roughly one full day before finding
• 43:24
Speaker 1: Dan guilty of first degree murder two counts of stalking
• 43:28
Speaker 1: and criminal impersonation. He was sentenced to life in prison
• 43:33
Speaker 1: without the possibility of parole.
• 43:40
Speaker 10: She just had a sense of beauty and style that
• 43:44
Speaker 10: it was so enjoyable to watch As a mom. She
• 43:49
Speaker 10: got her kids involved in so many things. She was
• 43:51
Speaker 10: always running them all over the place with complete dedication
• 43:54
Speaker 10: to make sure that they involved in the things that
• 43:56
Speaker 10: made them happy. So she is. She juggled a lot
• 44:00
Speaker 10: of balls and pulled it off amazingly. There's no matter
• 44:04
Speaker 10: justin I can bring her back. But it is a
• 44:08
Speaker 10: relief to know that the person who thought he was
• 44:12
Speaker 10: going to get away with it, with this convoluted alibi
• 44:16
Speaker 10: picture and trying to blame it on somebody else, that that.
• 44:21
Speaker 1: Didn't happen, and that was the tragic case of Christie Krug.
• 44:29
Speaker 1: Thank you for joining me, and a special thanks this
