Every year and in Weekly we pick 62, 64 rising stars in the community, people that we see as in a variety of professions that have the potential of greatness and to help make our community great. We always try to pick out an up-and-coming artist. And Matea Hall is one of the ones this year that we chose, and she's with us today. Thank you. Yeah, you Mathaya Hills: Thank you for having me. Rick Outzen: have got you have a studio, you have got tell us about Paintsacola dot com, that that new venture that you've started. Mathaya Hills: So Painsacola is I've been doing art for a long time, since I've been a child, honestly. And I've been doing commission based stuff and murals for I don't know, probably since high school at least. So Painsacola is something that I just started last week. and it just is giving it a name and giving it its own sort of brand. So yeah, Paincy Cola is like a mural commission based, like a bunch of different Rick Outzen: Now you've done some murals already. You know, it it it it what got us connected back was she's in Gulffree's high school they have parking spaces for seniors. kids get to paint their parking spaces. Well some of hired Matea to do it and she did a fantastic job. But let's go to something bigger. What are some of the bigger murals that you've worked on? Mathaya Hills: Ooh, that's a great question. honestly, I mean the parking spot murals is I've I did fourteen of them this year, so that's stuff that they may not be large in size, but they're large in project. Right. Right. Rick Outzen: Right. Mathaya Hills: the some of the larger murals I've worked on, I they're all relatively small. I haven't gotten to any big Rick Outzen: Okay. All right. Well tell me a mural you've worked on. Mathaya Hills: right now I'm working on one for Bad Women's Group. It's it's not bad like it sounds. it's called Build a Dream Foundation and it's just a group where they are helping women business owners thrive and so I'm getting to work on one for them right now. Rick Outzen: So what's what's what would be your dream project? A couple of those that you would really like to to see happen in the next year or so. Mathaya Hills: this is a very well, this isn't a a year project. This is probably a way down the line project. But I get a lot of inspiration from my grandpa. He was a painter and he actually painted the one of the water towers on Navarre Beach. And I always thought it would be super cool. Like one day, whenever they maybe decide they want to repaint the Pensacola Beach Ball, I'm like, call me. I don't know. Maybe. That's a very long way down the line, but Rick Outzen: What would you do with it? Mathaya Hills: I would stick to what it is 'cause it's just such an iconic thing of Pensacola Beach, but you maybe we'd spice up a little bit, give it a little different colors. I don't know. Something cool, but some sort of water tower. Definitely Definitely has to match Pensacola. Rick Outzen: So the is when you look at taking on a project, what what excites you about taking on a project? Mathaya Hills: I think a big thing that excites me about it is whenever I get like a new project, there's like I live in a constant state of imposter syndrome, I feel like, where I'm like, I don't know how I'm gonna how I'm gonna do this. Like this looks pretty crazy, how am I gonna get this on a wall? But whenever I start doing a project, it kind of just like, you know, God takes control of my hand and somehow it ends up looking like it does in the picture. So I think what excites me is just like looking at it and the initial nervousness I get from like, my gosh, can I do this correctly? And then, you know, it ends up looking better than I thought it would before. Rick Outzen: Do you sketch do you sketch it out first on paper? Yeah. And then try to figure go from there? Mathaya Hills: Yeah, there's a I I whenever I work with people I give them initial design ideas first and we narrow down to what they want on their wall. Rick Outzen: Well you know excited me when with rising stars we get applications. the the the people that are nominated send in their information and when I was looking over it's just yours what impressed us was just the variety of projects. You do graphic artists, you know, do you do graphic design also. it is it it seeing someone your age being as ambitious as you are, was very encouraging for me. I and I think for us as a community, this is a pretty good artistic town, I think. Mathaya Hills: I think so too, which is really why I appreciate Pensacola. I've I was born and raised here and you know, there's a lot of people that once they get out of high school, they go to colleges elsewhere. And I feel like for the most part everybody ends up coming back at some point. just because this place is it's different. It's different than anywhere else I've ever been. They have a I mean, maybe I'm biased, but I do really appreciate that they're really as into the arts as they are. but yeah, this place is Very artistically heavy and I I'm glad that they appreciate that too. Rick Outzen: And it's it's there's a variety of subjects that are available. Of course, the beaches there, the you have the natural beauty there, historic buildings, the the people are fascinating. You know. The what type of scene do you like to do the most? Mathaya Hills: I think that I I get a lot of, you know, beach, obviously considering where we live. I think my favorite scenes to do are probably like more downtown East Hill type, like very shaded canopy, downtown nightlife sort of scenes. I think that that the beach is cool. I love the beach. Right. Obviously, I go to it all the time. But I think that there's just something really special about downtown and the festivals that we have. Like we we we have so many festivals all the time and I don't know, it's like a it's almost like a baby baby New Orleans but you're right, Rick Outzen: Yeah. Mathaya Hills: right. Just in the sense that it's just so rich in history and art and just the people or Rick Outzen: You're open to new clients? Mathaya Hills: Always. Always open to new clients, yeah. Rick Outzen: Well, please check her out. It is an amazing it is a very talented artist. And and I've one of the great things about In Weekly and Rising Stars, we try to identify these people as quickly as we can. Matea Hall, she is you can drive by Gulfbrees High School and look at some of the parking spaces that are there, which are brilliant, but that's just that's just a fraction of what this young woman's capable of doing. so please check her out. and Mattea, thank you so much for coming on. You know, keep me in the loop on what's going on. I wanna know your next big project, I wanna know about it. Mathaya Hills: you know. I'll let you know. Rick Outzen: All right, good deal. Thank you so much for coming up. Alright, we'll go ahead and take a break. I'll try to wrap up this show. We're Rick's vlog, and I'm Rick Allen. Mathaya Hills: Yeah.
