- 0:00Hi everybody, I want to talk today about what I just received
- 0:03in the mail. I was going to do this the other
- 0:05day and do the big deal, opening it up and everything.
- 0:08My buddy Kenny Wallace beat it to me.
- 0:10But this is from the NASCAR alumni group headed up by the
- 0:14wonderful Amber Wells. As you notice you look in here,
- 0:17if y'all seen this, if you watch Kenny's the other day, we got a
- 0:20bunch of goodies, some magnets and a bunch of stuff.
- 0:23But here's what I want to talk about today.
- 0:25I want to talk about this, the hard card and what that means to
- 0:30me. And I feel like a lot of other
- 0:34folks that receive these things, OK, Give you a little history,
- 0:40man. When I was like 5 or 6 years
- 0:43old, I remember being on the bicycle out here in the road
- 0:46going around a stop sign and I was a race car driver.
- 0:48I was Richard Petty and I was out there out running Fred
- 0:51Lorenzen and all these guys, right?
- 0:54Well, anyhow, so when I come of age, I got me a dirt car.
- 0:56We ran the dirt races around here locally.
- 0:58And you know, NASCAR was this big mammoth thing that we were
- 1:03kind of secluded from, But it was like the, you know, the
- 1:06ultimate NASCAR was the ultimate.
- 1:08So in the mid 70s, I received my first NASCAR license, driver's
- 1:12license, right? And I held a driver's license
- 1:15for going on almost 30 years, right?
- 1:18So I remember when I first got that license and we started
- 1:21running like Southside and South Boston speedways and all that.
- 1:24I mean, it was, it was a big deal.
- 1:26It was a great big deal. To me.
- 1:27It was like, man, we were in this elite club.
- 1:29Now we've got I've got a NASCAR license, NASCAR driver's
- 1:32license, right? And in those days, Radar, when
- 1:35we was running late model right up through Bush Grand National,
- 1:38then into Cup Series. What you would do if you had a
- 1:41NASCAR license, when you got to the racetrack, there was a
- 1:44little boost set up outside of the garage area, outside of the
- 1:47racetrack. Everybody that had a license
- 1:50went to that booth and you signed in, right?
- 1:53And then they gave you the credentials to be in the garage
- 1:56area for the weekend. I mean, everybody had to do it.
- 1:58I don't care if you use Rick Mast or Dale Earnhardt or
- 2:01Richard Petty. Everybody had to do this.
- 2:02And what would happen? You get there, you know, and the
- 2:05line would be 4 miles long because every crew guy,
- 2:08everybody's in that garage area had to do that.
- 2:09So sometime maybe in the early 2000s, they came out with the
- 2:14hard card. The first issue, the hard card,
- 2:17They would issue this hard card at the beginning of the season,
- 2:19you know, if you're with a team as a driver, car owner, crew
- 2:22member, whatever. And for the first couple years
- 2:26when you go into the garage, you just show this hard car go right
- 2:28into the racetrack and did away with all that you all the mess
- 2:31we had to go through when how you go in the garage area and
- 2:34you're supposed to go up to the red truck in the middle of the
- 2:36garage and they had a had a waiver for him.
- 2:38You signed your name that you were at the racetrack and as a
- 2:41driver, you couldn't get on the racetrack until you sign that
- 2:45piece of paper, right? And I bet you, baby, I did it
- 2:49maybe 4-5 or six times. I'd be strapped in the car
- 2:52getting ready to back out of the garage.
- 2:53An official would stop me. But the worst time was I was out
- 2:56on Pitt Rd. getting Ridge on racetrack.
- 2:57The the official stopped me. Rick, you didn't sign the sign
- 3:00in, man. So you have to drive back garage
- 3:03area, get unbuckled, get all your stuff off, throw your
- 3:05helmet off, run to the red trailer sign and come back in.
- 3:09They did that for a couple years, right?
- 3:11And you know, then they finally, they finally did away with that.
- 3:15So all you had to have was a hard card.
- 3:17Now what this hard card is like before the hard card, when you
- 3:21had the credential and they even when it switched over to the
- 3:25hard card, when you're at the racetrack and your competitor,
- 3:29you're inside that garage area, This hard card lets you maneuver
- 3:34and go wherever you need to go within the facility.
- 3:37If you need to go out on Pit Rd. if you need to go to the Media
- 3:39Center, even if you had to go up into the grandstands to the
- 3:42press boxes or the suites or whatever you had to do, you know
- 3:47that's what you did. And for 30 years, that's what I
- 3:50did, right? That was my domain.
- 3:53Everywhere you went before the hard card in the past did the
- 3:56same thing. Now the hard card gets you
- 3:58wherever you got to go and you know it.
- 4:01It was like, that's your life for 30 years.
- 4:03That is your life, right? And you, you, you, you conduct
- 4:06your business. You do what you needed to do,
- 4:09you know, for the weekend or whatever it is.
- 4:11And then what would happen or what happened after when you
- 4:17leave the sport, OK, then you don't have a hard card any
- 4:21longer. OK, You're like, well, what do
- 4:24we do now? Well, for me, whenever I went to
- 4:28the races and I, I've attended since I got out, I attended
- 4:31quite a few races over the years, Mike Hilton would always
- 4:34accommodate me to get into the garage.
- 4:37You know, in fact, the one person who's in front or in
- 4:40charge, one time he told him if a, if a driver comes in, you
- 4:43know, an old driver wants to go in, just just sign them up.
- 4:45Well, they've got NASCAR, as most of you know, they've got a
- 4:48NASCAR registration trailer sets outside of the racetrack.
- 4:51Now the people that have passes to go in for the weekend or
- 4:53whatever, the VIP passes and all that, you go and you sign in
- 4:57with NASCAR and do all that. Well, so that's what they would
- 5:01always do for me and I was always appreciative of that.
- 5:04The problem is it was a pass you put around your neck and hit VIP
- 5:07access or that VIP access, it would get you in.
- 5:10You could go into the garage, but you know, it was it was
- 5:13limited. I mean, a few times I would go
- 5:16to go somewhere or do something. I see somebody over there I
- 5:18don't want to talk to or something I wanted to be or
- 5:20something I wanted to do, you know, I would get stopped
- 5:23because I didn't have a hard card, right?
- 5:26This pass wouldn't allow me to get in.
- 5:27And it has to be that way because you know that that's,
- 5:31that's the work area. That's the work area for all the
- 5:33competitors, right? And you can't have everybody
- 5:37having full access to go into all these areas.
- 5:40But for somebody like me and so many of the guys with me, that
- 5:43was just everyday practice for us, right?
- 5:45That was just that was just normal living for 30 years.
- 5:48That's what we did. And when I go to the race tracks
- 5:51and I would get stopped or turned away from where I wanted
- 5:54to be or go or see somebody or what not, you know, they would
- 5:57stop me. I'm like, man, you know, just
- 6:00kind of, it made you feel, you know, you.
- 6:03I don't know how, I don't know how it made me feel a little bit
- 6:06sad, little bit upset, you know, not mad.
- 6:09I was never mad because I understood the situation.
- 6:11But lo and behold, you know, here 2 ago, Jim France and Mike
- 6:16Elton decided that we need to fix this for the competitors
- 6:21that earn the right to carry one of these things in today's
- 6:24sport. And they did.
- 6:27They, they, they put it out there.
- 6:29Amber Wells and her crew took the same over there, there.
- 6:32You know, they've been growing it, they're getting it going
- 6:35good. I mean, it's it's really a neat
- 6:37deal and you know what it does also, it just kind of puts them
- 6:41in line with other professional sports or other major
- 6:43professional sports. They have excuse me, they have
- 6:46programs like this little different the way it's
- 6:49implemented, but still basically the same thing.
- 6:52And I'm going to tell you something, man, when you cherish
- 6:56and let me back up, I was always one of those guys that was
- 6:59humbled to be in the sport. You know, I mean, my 30 years to
- 7:03sport, I did what I could do to help Rick Mast, right?
- 7:06But I did, you know, one of my things, one of my little deals
- 7:09in my head always was to help NASCAR protect the brand and
- 7:14grow the brand, right. And I and also with that or the
- 7:18sponsors that I had all through the years, I it was protect the
- 7:21sponsor and grow the sponsor, grow the brand.
- 7:23And, you know, did a pretty good job at that.
- 7:25Yeah, I felt like I did. But, you know, with NASCAR, but
- 7:29being humbled by all that. And then some of the guys come
- 7:31in and weren't really humble, OK, you know, and that's just
- 7:34your make up that. But me being from where I was at
- 7:37and NASCAR being such a big deal over here, you know, and then I
- 7:41became a part, but then it became my family and it became a
- 7:44big part of my life for over 30 years, actually.
- 7:47And, you know, then you'd go back when you go out of a sport
- 7:52and you're not really not doing what to do and you come back and
- 7:55you can't really do what you, you know, you feel like it's
- 7:58just natural or comfortable. This baby right here puts you
- 8:03back into that place. It puts it puts me back into the
- 8:06place that I spent 30 years of my life, given what I thought
- 8:11was my best to the sport and to the people I represented.
- 8:15And for NASCAR to recognize us, OK, by giving us these things.
- 8:21It's to me, it's, it's hard to put in words what it really
- 8:25means to me. It's just that it's not like
- 8:30you're getting paid back for doing what you did or being
- 8:33involved because it's a two way street with with with all this.
- 8:37But you know, to be able to walk into the garage with this and
- 8:43you don't abuse it, right? You don't, you don't abuse these
- 8:45things. If you, if there's this, this is
- 8:47their work area. Guys are working, they're doing
- 8:49their thing. The media's doing their thing.
- 8:51The track personnel, the DASCAR people, they're all doing their
- 8:54thing. So you, you, but you know, from
- 8:5730 years of doing this, what you know, what conversations to get
- 9:01into, what to, where to be at, where not to be at.
- 9:04I mean, it, it gets you into the driver's meeting, right?
- 9:06I remember went to the track one time and I had the VIP pass.
- 9:09I went to go in the driver's beat and you know, couldn't get
- 9:12in, right. And I forget why I wanted to go
- 9:14in there something I wanted to go in there for it.
- 9:16I couldn't get in. I'm like, man, it's really,
- 9:18really discouraging, you know, and another thing about it that
- 9:21ties into this alumni deal. I mean, I talked to 1 driver and
- 9:24I know they know about it. The driver told me one time, you
- 9:26know, Rick, I'd like to go back, but I don't even know how to get
- 9:29in. I don't know who to call, what
- 9:30to do, you know, but well, I thought, well, that's a little
- 9:32bit short sighted because you pick up a damn phone to call,
- 9:35right? Called NASCAR and they'll,
- 9:37they'll fix you up. But you know, I think it's just
- 9:40going to open up over time. It's going to take a while.
- 9:42It's going to take a while for some of the guys to come back
- 9:44around because you go to the garage, you don't you kind of
- 9:47feel like an outsider, but not with this.
- 9:50You're no longer. And I guess that's what I'm
- 9:52getting at. Before, before we had this, I
- 9:55would kind of feel like an outsider.
- 9:56I'm like, I'm not an outsider. This sport, man, I was here for
- 9:5930 years. I was right in the middle of
- 10:01everything. I am not an outsider.
- 10:03I am. I am part of this sport.
- 10:07This is a solidifying piece that that makes this whole and for
- 10:14Mike and Jim and everybody in NASCAR ahead that did this part
- 10:18of it and now Amber carrying it on with her crew, I'm so
- 10:22appreciative. It's not, it's not something
- 10:26that we don't think about, but it is something I know that all
- 10:30the guys that were that receive these that are going to receive
- 10:33them, I know how they're feeling and I know how appreciative they
- 10:36are. So for that, NASCAR, thank you.
- 10:40Have a good day everybody.
