- 0:09Speaker 1: From Darryl K.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, it's the Texas Longhorns
- 0:14Speaker 2: against the UTSA Roadrunners. Johnny on the spot. Raheem Biles
- 0:34Speaker 2: plucks it out of the air for his second interception
- 0:36Speaker 2: of the season. Manning with the shotgun snap. Looking.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Still looking. Sends it across. 10-5. Touchdown, Cam Coleman.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Manning going to the well a second time across the middle.
- 0:51Speaker 2: This time to Coleman. A 24-yard touchdown. Good snap and hold.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Spedic has it on the way. This one's bending back in,
- 0:59Speaker 2: and it is good. Spedic. Able to bend it home
- 1:08Speaker 2: for a long-distance field goal. And the Longhorns are back
- 1:11Speaker 2: up by a touchdown. Out of the pistol with Smothers
- 1:15Speaker 2: lined up behind Manning. Now Hollywood rolls to the right
- 1:18Speaker 2: side of Arch. Manning with the snap. Looks right. Will
- 1:21Speaker 2: fade it in the end zone.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Coleman caught it.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Elevated in the air and pulled it in for the score.
- 1:30Speaker 3: 30-40 yard field goal try.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Gianni Spedic looking to add to the Texas lead. Good
- 1:35Speaker 2: snap and hold. Spedic's kick on the way, and Tiani's
- 1:38Speaker 2: kick is good. Longhorns can get three.
- 1:40Speaker 4: More out of it.
- 1:42Speaker 2: With the snap snap and hold the kick is up
- 1:45Speaker 2: and the kick is good Texas does extend that lead
- 1:48Speaker 2: back to 17 points Manning has the snap turns hands
- 1:54Speaker 2: into Cooper cuts inside and he's across Derek Cooper has
- 1:58Speaker 2: his first touchdown as a Texas Longhorn and it's the
- 2:02Speaker 2: first touchdown of the second half for the horns so
- 2:04Speaker 2: the Longhorns despite some sluggish moments tonight were impressive enough
- 2:09Speaker 2: on defense to keep UTSA from getting into any kind
- 2:13Speaker 2: of real offensive rhythm. And the Longhorn offense, after a
- 2:17Speaker 2: quick start, able to cruise in for the victory. Final
- 2:20Speaker 2: score here tonight from Darrell K. Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium
- 2:24Speaker 2: in Austin, the Texas Longhorns 30, the UTSA Roadrunners 6.
- 2:31Speaker 2: That'll get you to 3-0 and get you fired up,
- 2:34Speaker 2: get you ready to go for a conference opening week
- 2:39Speaker 2: in SEC play. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program
- 2:42Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM 1300, The Zone, where you can
- 2:45Speaker 2: always listen to us for free right here on the
- 2:47Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig Way. Glad you could
- 2:50Speaker 2: join us this afternoon. Yes, Texas Longhorns are 3-0, and
- 2:54Speaker 2: now it turns, and with it, the attention turns. to
- 3:01Speaker 2: the Southeastern conference opener for the Longhorns this Saturday morning, 11,
- 3:06Speaker 2: 10 AM kick from Neyland stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee against
- 3:11Speaker 2: the Tennessee volunteers. It'll be the first time ever that
- 3:15Speaker 2: a Texas Longhorns played a football game in Knoxville. We'll
- 3:17Speaker 2: look forward to bringing you all the coverage and all
- 3:20Speaker 2: that stuff for the game itself and all of the
- 3:21Speaker 2: run up to that. That's why today's Longhorns Monday and
- 3:25Speaker 2: on Longhorns Monday, uh, we, uh, you know, set up
- 3:29Speaker 2: shop over on the UT campus and bring you Steve
- 3:33Speaker 2: Sarkeesian's weekly news conference. We'll have the comments from that
- 3:37Speaker 2: press conference coming up on the re-air here in just
- 3:40Speaker 2: a few moments. The producers, Jake Herman alongside, who's a
- 3:46Speaker 2: woe-be-gone Washington commanders, took the hit again, unfortunately.
- 3:51Speaker 3: How about the season be gone, Washington Commanders, for a
- 3:54Speaker 3: second time in a row, three times out of the
- 3:56Speaker 3: last four games, Craig, the franchise quarterback is left with
- 4:00Speaker 3: an injury to the same elbow. It's so disheartening. Wow.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And right when they were knocking on the door there, too.
- 4:06Speaker 3: He looked great.
- 4:06Speaker 2: He did it close, yeah. He had played well, and
- 4:08Speaker 2: the Cowboys were having some fits with him. And then, boy,
- 4:13Speaker 2: when they showed that one close-up, I was like, ugh.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Well, at least you didn't, maybe you said what Tom
- 4:18Speaker 3: Brady did.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't say that.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Didn't say that.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And Linda and I were over at a friend's house.
- 4:25Speaker 2: We were at a gathering over that. So there was
- 4:28Speaker 2: a lot of noise going on and everything, but the
- 4:29Speaker 2: TV was on and I was sitting there and I
- 4:31Speaker 2: was like, did he just say that? And sure enough,
- 4:34Speaker 2: my kids immediately, Tom Brady said the S word, you know, whatever.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So yeah, that was, then all these people who, you know, whatever,
- 4:45Speaker 2: most of them probably don't like Brady or Fox or whatever, uh,
- 4:50Speaker 2: we're like, is he going to be fine for that?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Come on. Not the first time somebody is uttered an
- 4:56Speaker 2: expletive on, on a national telecast. And it darn sure
- 4:59Speaker 2: won't be the last.
- 5:00Speaker 3: It was a weekend full of those, wasn't it?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yes, it was. So, uh, are they going to find
- 5:05Speaker 2: Trinidad Chambliss for what he said? No, no, you know, the,
- 5:11Speaker 2: the FCC understands it now. Now I will tell you this, um,
- 5:18Speaker 2: In the case of ESPN, anyway, those broadcasts, I think,
- 5:21Speaker 2: are supposed to be on about a five-second delay. So
- 5:24Speaker 2: that one just kind of slid through there. Even when
- 5:26Speaker 2: you're doing a live interview on the air, it's supposed
- 5:29Speaker 2: to then pass through about a five-second filter, like what
- 5:33Speaker 2: we have here, you know, when we've had people on.
- 5:35Speaker 2: We have what's called a dump button here. It doesn't
- 5:39Speaker 2: really affect us in the day-to-day because we take texts,
- 5:42Speaker 2: not phone calls, but it's there in case of that. So, um,
- 5:47Speaker 2: but unfortunately, um, uh, for Jane Daniels, who was playing well,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and unfortunately for all of you who, those of you
- 5:55Speaker 2: might've had him on your fantasy football teams.
- 5:57Speaker 3: How about the DC sports fans, Craig? How about the
- 6:00Speaker 3: long suffering DC sports fans, particularly for a franchise that
- 6:03Speaker 3: had the glimmer of hope and has it now, uh,
- 6:07Speaker 3: punted to 2027 again. And, uh, Yeah, I mean, even
- 6:13Speaker 3: if he decides to come back and play through this thing,
- 6:16Speaker 3: the schedule's brutal early for Washington. They're looking at a
- 6:19Speaker 3: start that might be too deep of a hole to
- 6:21Speaker 3: climb out of.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know about the— what did you say about
- 6:28Speaker 2: the poor, long-suffering Washington fans? Well, think about my generation, though, Craig. Okay,
- 6:35Speaker 2: you've had the Nationals win a World Series. You've had
- 6:39Speaker 2: the Capitals win a Stanley Cup, right?
- 6:41Speaker 3: Right?
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Okay. And you've had a couple of appearances in playoffs.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I mean, the Commander's got the NFC Championship game a
- 6:49Speaker 2: couple of years ago.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Right. That's what I'm saying. But it's not Minnesota levels.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Let me introduce you to Cleveland, okay?
- 6:55Speaker 3: Well, yeah. Well, they had a nice little run there,
- 6:57Speaker 3: didn't they?
- 6:58Speaker 2: They had one NBA Championship and one Get It to
- 7:03Speaker 2: Game 7 World Series. That's been it. The Browns are horrible,
- 7:09Speaker 2: except for this pass yesterday. And how bad must Tampa
- 7:13Speaker 2: Bay be, if that's the case, right, for Cleveland to
- 7:18Speaker 2: get the win on that? And then, you know, looking
- 7:20Speaker 2: around the NFL, who had the Chargers starting 0-2 on
- 7:24Speaker 2: their being a card? Remember, I don't have them in
- 7:26Speaker 2: the playoffs in our predictions.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I had them not only in the playoffs, but winning
- 7:29Speaker 3: that division. And it seems that I vastly overestimated them.
- 7:35Speaker 2: So maybe everyone has overestimated the Rams. We'll find out
- 7:39Speaker 2: a little more tonight. If they don't beat the Giants tonight,
- 7:43Speaker 2: then I think everybody can take a hard look at that.
- 7:47Speaker 2: As far as teams that have been underestimated, how about
- 7:49Speaker 2: the Raiders? Anybody point to the last time the Raiders
- 7:54Speaker 2: were 2-0?
- 7:54Speaker 3: Can anybody name a receiver who caught a touchdown for
- 7:57Speaker 3: them this weekend?
- 8:00Speaker 2: It's a cast of nobodies. It's like in major league.
- 8:03Speaker 2: You're like, I don't recognize any of these guys.
- 8:05Speaker 3: CBS had the wrong chyron up for one of them.
- 8:07Speaker 3: That's how anonymous some of these guys are. How about
- 8:09Speaker 3: Kirk Cousins?
- 8:10Speaker 2: True enough. True enough. And he's like my third quarterback
- 8:16Speaker 2: on my fantasy team. And I decided not to play
- 8:19Speaker 2: him this weekend. And he still was, his point output
- 8:21Speaker 2: was very close to what my, in a two quarterback league.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I got Dak Prescott and I got Patrick Mahomes. And
- 8:27Speaker 2: they both put up big, big numbers. But he wasn't
- 8:30Speaker 2: far off their pace either. So, yes, I'm going to
- 8:33Speaker 2: win this week.
- 8:34Speaker 3: That's for sure. Don't worry. I was among those who
- 8:36Speaker 3: were Amon Ross St. Browned on Thursday night. Too deep
- 8:40Speaker 3: of a hole.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah. It might be difficult to climb out of that.
- 8:45Speaker 2: But other things. Teams we didn't expect 0-2 starts.
- 8:49Speaker 3: The Texans. Certainly not.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Didn't not expect them to struggle like that. you know,
- 8:56Speaker 2: even with the Bengals revamped defense for them to struggle
- 9:00Speaker 2: the way they did yesterday.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Certainly not. I throw the Buccaneers in there as well
- 9:04Speaker 3: for surprising 0-2 starts. And, you know, it's not been
- 9:11Speaker 3: pretty for the Texans in terms of playing complimentary football
- 9:14Speaker 3: so far. Even when the offense matriculated it down the field,
- 9:17Speaker 3: they couldn't finish drives. And when the offense played great
- 9:21Speaker 3: in week one, the defense let them down. This week,
- 9:23Speaker 3: it was the special teams that took the Texans out
- 9:26Speaker 3: of it.
- 9:27Speaker 2: We're going to hear from D'Amico Ryans on the program today. Obviously,
- 9:31Speaker 2: we're going to hear from Ryan Schottenheimer, the Cowboys, stepping up.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Dak Prescott had himself a big game. CeeDee Lamb had
- 9:37Speaker 2: himself a big game on the offensive side. They got
- 9:40Speaker 2: some takeaways, even before the Jaden Daniels injury. And then
- 9:45Speaker 2: they added on to it on the back end. So
- 9:48Speaker 2: the Cowboys are 1-1 and alive and well before they
- 9:50Speaker 2: head to Brazil to take on the Ravens, who look
- 9:53Speaker 2: really good.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Well, they had a little stumbling this week, didn't they?
- 9:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and.
- 10:00Speaker 3: they?
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and the thing about them is that you'd expect...
- 10:05Speaker 2: them to be blasting everybody so then when they do
- 10:08Speaker 2: take a stumble back, then it's like, oh, you know.
- 10:11Speaker 3: They've had losses like this in the.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Last few years. Yeah, it's weird. How weird was the
- 10:17Speaker 2: Bears loss yesterday? And by the way, speaking of surprise
- 10:20Speaker 2: 2-0 teams, how about the Vikings?
- 10:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I don't think either of us had them in the playoffs.
- 10:25Speaker 3: No, that Brian Flores defense, though. I mean, they basically
- 10:28Speaker 3: had one bad half to start the year.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yep.
- 10:31Speaker 3: And they've looked really good since. Obviously, Caleb Williams had
- 10:33Speaker 3: something to do with it as he left the game
- 10:35Speaker 3: with that hamstring injury.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yep, yep. That is true. Unsurprising 2-0 starts. Eagles. I think,
- 10:43Speaker 2: you know, folks expected them... you know, to do, to
- 10:48Speaker 2: do their job out of the gate. Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Very 2024 chief start play with their food and win
- 10:53Speaker 3: it right at the end.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Look at that. Um, so there was that, and yet
- 10:58Speaker 2: they're two and oh, and a lot of people thought
- 10:59Speaker 2: they're gonna take a big step back this year and
- 11:00Speaker 2: they might, but haven't so far.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yeah. I was, I was comparing the Eagles to them too.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I mean, the Eagles, they, I would have expected them
- 11:08Speaker 3: to win by more decisive margins, but here they are
- 11:10Speaker 3: two and oh, and Jalen Hurts has looked good.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Doing what they need to do to get wins. Um,
- 11:16Speaker 2: The 49ers look impressive. The Seahawks clearly look impressive. Those
- 11:20Speaker 2: two teams.
- 11:21Speaker 3: The Dolphins, they are who we thought they were.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Jets.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Hey, the Jets look okay. They still found a way
- 11:28Speaker 3: to jet things up there at the end.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Titans.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I mean, they hung around with Philadelphia yesterday.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Cam Ward at least looked like a serviceable quarterback this week. Yeah. So.
- 11:41Speaker 2: A lot of the expected, some of the unexpected on that.
- 11:44Speaker 2: We'll talk more about the NFL. And again, we'll hear
- 11:49Speaker 2: from the two head coaches of the two NFL teams
- 11:53Speaker 2: in this town. And then, like I said, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 2: college football, so much of the nation had its eyes
- 11:58Speaker 2: focused on Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi on Saturday night.
- 12:03Speaker 2: And that was... Quite the impressive showing for Ole Miss
- 12:08Speaker 2: in coming down the stretch. And how about them going
- 12:10Speaker 2: for two after the touchdown there late in the fourth quarter,
- 12:14Speaker 2: taking advantage of the jumping off sides, get the two-pointer,
- 12:16Speaker 2: and then get the stop at the tail end. And
- 12:18Speaker 2: so the big revenge tour thing, you know, they able to,
- 12:26Speaker 2: you know, put the clamps down on Lane Kiffin and
- 12:29Speaker 2: the LSU Tigers.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yeah, how about a team that was able to ride
- 12:32Speaker 3: the wave of emotion and channel it into really, really
- 12:35Speaker 3: positive play early in the game? I thought for a
- 12:38Speaker 3: minute that the Rebels were ready to run away with it.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Credit LSU for hanging around, staying in the fun. I
- 12:43Speaker 3: don't think that team is going anywhere anytime soon, but
- 12:46Speaker 3: I definitely leave that game feeling much better about Ole
- 12:50Speaker 3: Miss if I'm a Rebel fan and feeling even stronger
- 12:53Speaker 3: in the conviction that Trinidad Chambliss is the best quarterback
- 12:56Speaker 3: the Longhorns are going to face this year.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And I'm not disagreeing with you on that. I would
- 13:02Speaker 2: just also say keep an eye on a couple of
- 13:07Speaker 2: other guys as well.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Didn't love what I saw out of a couple other
- 13:12Speaker 3: quarterbacks on the schedule this weekend.
- 13:14Speaker 2: In Oklahoma, they appear ready to burn down the town.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I know it had to be fake, but somebody really
- 13:22Speaker 2: created a really authentic-looking Indeed job application page, it said,
- 13:30Speaker 2: for positions wanted to fill. I heard you talking about
- 13:34Speaker 2: that this morning. Head coach and quarterback. You look at it,
- 13:36Speaker 2: you'll find it on there. And then there's Camario Taylor.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Taylor.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Uh but he looked good super camario yeah yeah he
- 13:45Speaker 2: looked he looked really really good so there's a lot
- 13:48Speaker 2: of good quarterback play in this league.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Jeff levy a couple of great road wins.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah yeah very good start for them of course they'll
- 13:55Speaker 2: be here on halloween um texas a & m it's
- 13:59Speaker 2: hard to know what to make of that uh kentucky
- 14:01Speaker 2: uh outplayed them uh played really really well and won
- 14:05Speaker 2: the game cj baxter the former longhorn scored a couple
- 14:07Speaker 2: of touchdowns he ran tough um CJ likes playing at
- 14:11Speaker 2: Kyle Field. He's 2-0 their lifetime.
- 14:14Speaker 3: I was thinking about that, watching him kind of salt
- 14:17Speaker 3: the game away with some good inside the tackles running
- 14:20Speaker 3: late in the ballgame. And for a Kentucky team that
- 14:22Speaker 3: clearly got worn out physically in the second half by Alabama,
- 14:26Speaker 3: they turned that around in a big way, doing it
- 14:28Speaker 3: on the road.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Georgia and Alabama look the part of how you'd
- 14:33Speaker 2: expect them to look. They look really, really good. A
- 14:35Speaker 2: lot of people north of the border are really concerned
- 14:37Speaker 2: about Oklahoma having to go to Athens this week.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I would be too.
- 14:43Speaker 2: And then there's the team the Longhorns are going to play.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Speaking of good quarterback play, they got that as well
- 14:50Speaker 2: from the freshman. Now, Tennessee hasn't played anyone of real
- 14:54Speaker 2: substance consequence yet, but they've been very, very precision-like, and
- 14:58Speaker 2: they've been very sharp in their execution, in their victory.
- 15:01Speaker 3: And as we'll hear Sark discuss, the Longhorns will need
- 15:04Speaker 3: to be sharper than what they showed at times in
- 15:06Speaker 3: the win over UTSA on offense. The defense, like you
- 15:09Speaker 3: talked about this morning with Harge, lights out.
- 15:12Speaker 2: So this is the Longhorns Monday. We're going to hear
- 15:14Speaker 2: from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian.
- 15:16Speaker 3: We'll do that.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Also, if you'd like to weigh in, feel free to
- 15:19Speaker 2: do that. Reach us via the text line. All you

- 16:04Speaker 2: don't go the Tom Brady route on that.
- 16:05Speaker 3: All right.
- 16:06Speaker 2: We're going to hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 16:08Speaker 2: from the weekly news conference coming up on Sports Radio
- 16:11Speaker 2: AM 13 Under the.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Zone and the free iHeartRadio app.
- 16:32Speaker 2: The theme of a lot of long run football fans
- 16:35Speaker 2: coming out of Saturday night's game.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Unsatisfied.
- 16:39Speaker 2: And by the way, the head coach agrees with you.
- 16:43Speaker 2: He understands. We're about to hear him talk about that
- 16:46Speaker 2: in review. You should be satisfied with how the defense played, though.
- 16:51Speaker 2: They held UTSA to 142 yards of offense, did their
- 16:54Speaker 2: job there offensively. Got off to the quick enough start,
- 16:58Speaker 2: but then it kind of flattened out from there. Well,
- 17:00Speaker 2: let's hear from the head coach. This is from this
- 17:02Speaker 2: morning from the press conference that we brought to you
- 17:05Speaker 2: live as we do every Monday morning on our Longhorns
- 17:08Speaker 2: Monday from the UT campus. We start our coverage at
- 17:11Speaker 2: 11 a.m. and the start comes on right around 1130
- 17:13Speaker 2: for his weekly press conference. So here are the opening
- 17:17Speaker 2: comments from the Longhorns head coach.
- 17:19Speaker 5: You know, I want to kick it off again just
- 17:20Speaker 5: by thanking our fans. What an awesome atmosphere we had
- 17:24Speaker 5: at DKR again. Saturday night, you're not 23-1 in your
- 17:30Speaker 5: last 24 games at home, and you don't have a
- 17:32Speaker 5: 12 straight home winning streak without great support from our fans.
- 17:37Speaker 5: So thank you, Longhorn Nation, for your support of this
- 17:40Speaker 5: team and what we've been doing over the past few
- 17:43Speaker 5: years at home. As far as the ballgame goes, I
- 17:46Speaker 5: thought we started off the game really well. Obviously, any
- 17:49Speaker 5: time you get a turnover on the first play of
- 17:51Speaker 5: the game, But, you know, you get 17 points off
- 17:54Speaker 5: your first three drives. You know, I thought defensively they
- 17:58Speaker 5: had the one 13 play drive where the ball kind
- 18:01Speaker 5: of got to the edge on us. And then after that,
- 18:04Speaker 5: I think they went the rest of the first half.
- 18:06Speaker 5: I think they ran 12 plays for 11 yards. It
- 18:09Speaker 5: was 10 straight third down stops, eight punts. So defensively
- 18:13Speaker 5: was fantastic about like offensively. We just kind of hit
- 18:16Speaker 5: a little bit of a lull. It was kind of like, okay,
- 18:18Speaker 5: we got 17 points. We didn't quite play the way
- 18:21Speaker 5: we want to play and capable of playing. I thought
- 18:24Speaker 5: there were some positives in special teams. I think Giovanni
- 18:28Speaker 5: continues to be a weapon for us, five for five
- 18:30Speaker 5: on field goals. The amount of touchbacks we're getting on
- 18:33Speaker 5: kickoffs have been tremendous. We had some return opportunities. There
- 18:38Speaker 5: was a couple tough calls we got in the return
- 18:41Speaker 5: game that we need to clean up. But it was
- 18:43Speaker 5: good to get Ryan with the ball in his hands
- 18:45Speaker 5: in the return game. We need to shore up some
- 18:47Speaker 5: things in the kickoff return game to be even better there.
- 18:50Speaker 5: But here's the deal, right? We're starting SEC play. And
- 18:54Speaker 5: we all sat around when you had some time Saturday
- 18:58Speaker 5: and watched some of the games. In this conference, I've
- 19:01Speaker 5: said it time and time again, from top to bottom,
- 19:04Speaker 5: anybody can beat anybody. And I think that's the challenge
- 19:07Speaker 5: of our conference is being mentally and physically prepared to
- 19:11Speaker 5: play week in and week out.
- 19:13Speaker 6: And for us this week, it's no different. We're going into.
- 19:16Speaker 5: What I would probably consider is the loudest stadium in
- 19:18Speaker 5: the country, Neyland Stadium. I think Coach Heupel's done a
- 19:21Speaker 5: tremendous job there with what he's done offensively and the
- 19:25Speaker 5: amount of explosive plays. But they've evolved some offensively. This
- 19:30Speaker 5: is a team that believes in running the football. They
- 19:33Speaker 5: got two great runners in Bishop and Morris, guys who
- 19:35Speaker 5: can run the football offensively. got a true freshman quarterback
- 19:38Speaker 5: in Faison Brandon who's got elite arm talent and the
- 19:42Speaker 5: challenge they pose is their ability to run the ball
- 19:44Speaker 5: and then their ability to take their shots down the
- 19:47Speaker 5: field which is what they've been notorious for over the
- 19:49Speaker 5: years is the big home run plays down the field.
- 19:52Speaker 5: So you got to be able to play both and
- 19:54Speaker 5: then play it against the tempo and how fast they go. Obviously, defensively,
- 19:59Speaker 5: bringing in Jim Knowles, who's as respected of defensive coordinators
- 20:03Speaker 5: there is in the country. He's done it at multiple stops.
- 20:07Speaker 5: He's got a very good group. They're aggressive at the
- 20:10Speaker 5: line of scrimmage. They mix their coverages in the back end.
- 20:13Speaker 5: So we've got a heck of a challenge going into
- 20:15Speaker 5: a hostile environment. Obviously, with game day coming, they'll be
- 20:19Speaker 5: all charged up, ready to go. I think naturally for
- 20:21Speaker 5: us when we go on the road, we've got to
- 20:23Speaker 5: focus on what we need to do. We need to
- 20:25Speaker 5: stay really connected, and we need to have the ability
- 20:27Speaker 5: to execute in all three phases to be successful.
- 20:31Speaker 2: All right, those were the opening comments. Now from the
- 20:33Speaker 2: Q & A, ask first of all, why is this
- 20:37Speaker 2: team better equipped to go on the road in the
- 20:39Speaker 2: SEC this time around?
- 20:41Speaker 6: Well, it's a tough, you know, I get it.
- 20:43Speaker 5: We didn't play well at Florida last year, but we
- 20:46Speaker 5: are 13-3 in SEC play, which is the best record
- 20:49Speaker 5: in the conference in our two years in the conference.
- 20:51Speaker 5: So I'm very confident in our ability to go on
- 20:53Speaker 5: the road and play well.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Okay, next, Sark, of course, has been to Neyland Stadium.
- 20:59Speaker 2: On Nick Saban's Alabama staff, the Longhorns themselves, of course,
- 21:03Speaker 2: have never played in Knoxville. We talked about that before.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And he was asked what makes Neyland Stadium, and it's
- 21:10Speaker 2: 105 or 107,000, whatever, depending on the game, so loud.
- 21:14Speaker 5: You got to ask the engineers that put it together.
- 21:16Speaker 5: You know, it's 100 and something thousand. I don't know
- 21:18Speaker 5: the exact number of what it holds, 102, 103, similar
- 21:20Speaker 5: to our place. But the structure of it is what
- 21:24Speaker 5: it is. You know, their fans are engaged. They understand football.
- 21:28Speaker 5: They got a lot of pride in their program, right?
- 21:32Speaker 5: But I don't know the structure of it.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Why?
- 21:34Speaker 5: If it's more vertical, I'm not sure how it is.
- 21:36Speaker 5: It's enclosed, but it's definitely a loud place.
- 21:39Speaker 2: All right. Then he was asked about the use of
- 21:42Speaker 2: Michael Masunis at tight end, the transfer from Michigan State
- 21:47Speaker 2: along with, Spencer Shannon, along with Mari Winston. And, you know,
- 21:53Speaker 2: so his thoughts in the tight end rotation usage.
- 21:58Speaker 5: To us, like at that position, you know, especially when
- 22:01Speaker 5: we had Nick, we had four guys and it was
- 22:02Speaker 5: real competition, you know, and it's how you practice. It's
- 22:05Speaker 5: the level of consistency. It's the physicality in which we play.
- 22:09Speaker 5: It's the knowing what to do. And so it's not
- 22:12Speaker 5: necessarily a takeaway from Mike Masunis. I think it's credit
- 22:15Speaker 5: to Spencer Shannon, Amari Winston, and Nick Townsend. So, hey,
- 22:19Speaker 5: the more consistency we can get out of Mike, the better.
- 22:22Speaker 5: We're going to need all those bodies. I said that
- 22:24Speaker 5: before the year. We've got four guys in that room.
- 22:26Speaker 5: We're going to need all those bodies to contribute some
- 22:29Speaker 5: at varying times more than others. So hopefully he can
- 22:33Speaker 5: continue to come on and that we can use him more.
- 22:35Speaker 2: All right. Quick exchange on asking about a Colin Simmons
- 22:38Speaker 2: injury update.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Sark, how's Colin Simmons doing?
- 22:41Speaker 2: Did he practice today?
- 22:42Speaker 5: There's called an injury report in the SEC, so that's
- 22:45Speaker 5: enough of the injury questions.
- 22:46Speaker 2: There it is. It's going to come out on Wednesday evening. Therefore,
- 22:50Speaker 2: that was when the SEC, the first one that affects Texas,
- 22:54Speaker 2: because it only applies to conference games. So that's when
- 22:57Speaker 2: the first one will come out on that. It's a friend,
- 23:01Speaker 2: Cedric Olin, asking Sark about, you know, the identity of
- 23:05Speaker 2: the team, what they were looking.
- 23:07Speaker 3: For, and really and truly.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Who are the Longhorns.
- 23:10Speaker 3: To this point?
- 23:11Speaker 5: Well, I think we're a team that is very well connected.
- 23:14Speaker 5: I think that plays well with one another. I think
- 23:16Speaker 5: we take pride in our conditioning. You look at the
- 23:19Speaker 5: scores in the second half of our three games. You
- 23:21Speaker 5: look at the scores in the fourth quarter of our
- 23:23Speaker 5: three games. These guys believe in their conditioning. They believe
- 23:26Speaker 5: in the adjustments that the coaches are making, and they
- 23:28Speaker 5: go execute, and they continue to play together.
- 23:31Speaker 6: That's very encouraging.
- 23:32Speaker 5: We're going to continue to find out more as the
- 23:35Speaker 5: season unveils itself to us. And we got more challenges
- 23:38Speaker 5: ahead of us, you know, and obviously this weekend it
- 23:40Speaker 5: starts with Tennessee.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:43Speaker 2: All right. So there is that. The game is at
- 23:46Speaker 2: 1110 a.m., as I pointed out, 1110 a.m. And not
- 23:54Speaker 2: only is it at 1110 a.m., our coverage, of course,
- 23:58Speaker 2: will begin Saturday morning at 7 o'clock with the Third
- 24:05Speaker 2: Longhorn Podcast guys with... Their pregame.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Preview.
- 24:12Speaker 2: And then Longhorn's weekly.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Not weekly.
- 24:15Speaker 2: I said that earlier today. Longhorn weekly is on Thursday
- 24:19Speaker 2: nights here on The Zone. And I think we go
- 24:21Speaker 2: back to 7 o'clock this week. Can we go back
- 24:23Speaker 2: to 7?
- 24:24Speaker 3: That's what I thought. Let me make sure for us.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Because the Round Rock Express season did end yesterday. So
- 24:30Speaker 2: I think it goes back into its regular 7 o'clock
- 24:33Speaker 2: Thursday night time slot this week after we were, you know,
- 24:40Speaker 2: sliding in a little bit, adjusting it when there were
- 24:43Speaker 2: some late season Round Rock Express games. Yeah, 7 o'clock. Yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 2: so it goes back into the regular Longhorn Weekly with
- 24:50Speaker 2: Coach Sark. That'll be at 7 o'clock on Thursday night.
- 24:53Speaker 2: But our Longhorn's game day programming will begin at 8
- 24:55Speaker 2: o'clock Saturday morning. And that's, is that going to be
- 25:01Speaker 2: a back porch?
- 25:02Speaker 3: That's what, yeah, that's what I've heard. Okay. Okay.
- 25:05Speaker 2: All right, back porch social in Round Rock. I go
- 25:08Speaker 2: where they tell me. Okay, all right. That's why I'm
- 25:10Speaker 2: asking you.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a good setup over there.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. It's a lot of fun over there.
- 25:15Speaker 2: So that'll be at 8 o'clock. The SEC this weekend
- 25:21Speaker 2: is setting a record for most head-to-head ranked matchups in
- 25:31Speaker 2: college football this weekend. Most head-to-head ranked matchups. in college football.
- 25:36Speaker 2: So what you basically have this week around in, and
- 25:43Speaker 2: even if you just, uh, step in to the sec
- 25:48Speaker 2: and look at the games that do not involve ranked
- 25:51Speaker 2: programs like Kentucky hosting, uh, South Alabama, um, and Arkansas
- 25:57Speaker 2: hosting Tulsa, um, South Carolina is playing at a ranked
- 26:02Speaker 2: sec school at Alabama. South Carolina is not ranked, but
- 26:06Speaker 2: the other ones.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 2: All ranked matchup for ranked head to head matchups. First time,
- 26:13Speaker 2: any conference has had four head to head matchups between
- 26:18Speaker 2: ranked teams. Uh, number one, Texas and number 14, Tennessee. Uh,
- 26:24Speaker 2: now Oklahoma is still in the coaches poll, uh, But
- 26:29Speaker 2: that one wasn't even counted among the four. They are still,
- 26:32Speaker 2: I think, 24 in the coaches' poll. They're unranked in
- 26:34Speaker 2: the AP. They play at second-ranked Georgia. But the other three,
- 26:37Speaker 2: fourth-ranked Ole Miss at number 21, Florida. They're in the
- 26:40Speaker 2: poll for the first time. Number 23, Texas A & M.
- 26:43Speaker 2: And number 10, LSU. And number 19, Missouri at number 24,
- 26:48Speaker 2: Mississippi State. In addition to that, as I mentioned, South
- 26:53Speaker 2: Carolina at eighth-ranked, Alabama. They're at home there. And then
- 26:56Speaker 2: the one other matchup is Vanderbilt.
- 26:59Speaker 1: At Auburn.
- 27:00Speaker 2: I simply cannot wait until after the Monday night game
- 27:06Speaker 2: between the Rams and the Giants to watch Scott Van
- 27:08Speaker 2: Pelt tonight with SportsCenter when they get to bad beats.
- 27:11Speaker 2: The Vanderbilt-North Carolina State game is the bad beat to
- 27:14Speaker 2: end all bad beats. Had somebody text me and say
- 27:18Speaker 2: they should just retire it at this point. It cannot
- 27:22Speaker 2: get any worse if you're an NC State person or
- 27:27Speaker 2: if you had money on taking NC State in the points.
- 27:31Speaker 2: If you didn't know what happened, North Carolina State, a
- 27:36Speaker 2: three and a half point underdog to Vanderbilt is on
- 27:41Speaker 2: the verge of upsetting Vanderbilt. So that would completely not
- 27:44Speaker 2: only take that out, it would even take it if
- 27:46Speaker 2: you were one of those guys betting, what as they say,
- 27:48Speaker 2: on the money line, taking Vanderbilt on the money line
- 27:50Speaker 2: because NC State was on the verge of winning. So
- 27:52Speaker 2: they're trying to run out the clock with nine seconds
- 27:55Speaker 2: to go on their end of the field.
- 27:58Speaker 3: And I.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Haven't seen any further explanation other than Dave Doran say, hey,
- 28:03Speaker 2: they'll take responsibility for it and go on for that.
- 28:06Speaker 2: But I'm not sure the complete explanation for what the
- 28:12Speaker 2: strategy was. It was fourth down and Vanderbilt was inside
- 28:18Speaker 2: their own 10-yard line for sure, if not their own five.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And they're trying to kill nine seconds of well, you're
- 28:26Speaker 2: probably not going to be able to kill nine seconds
- 28:28Speaker 2: just running around in the end zone. Somebody's going to
- 28:30Speaker 2: catch up to you. There's the concern about maybe giving
- 28:34Speaker 2: up a block punt if you try to block it
- 28:36Speaker 2: or maybe giving up a big return or even enough
- 28:39Speaker 2: to where they could get a game-time field goal. After all,
- 28:42Speaker 2: NC State was up three points at 31-28. So probably,
- 28:46Speaker 2: I think it was, might have been Trevor Madditch from
- 28:49Speaker 2: College Football Finals said, there were a hundred different things
- 28:52Speaker 2: you could have done that would have been right, and
- 28:54Speaker 2: they picked the one that wasn't. I don't know if
- 28:56Speaker 2: there was 100, but probably the most popular thing would
- 28:59Speaker 2: have been snap it back to K.J. Bailey, let him
- 29:03Speaker 2: take a couple of– D.J. Bailey, right? And then let
- 29:07Speaker 2: him take a couple of steps back, let two or
- 29:09Speaker 2: three seconds, and then just step out of the back
- 29:10Speaker 2: of the end zone. Take the safety. It cuts it
- 29:12Speaker 2: to 31-30. But then you free kick from the 20,
- 29:16Speaker 2: and you can just boom it downfield and make sure
- 29:19Speaker 2: that you've got good coverage. What happened was, if you
- 29:21Speaker 2: didn't see it, Bailey– Kaz tries to dance around at first,
- 29:27Speaker 2: but the Vanderbilt defense collapses on him quickly. And as
- 29:32Speaker 2: he's going to try to go to the ground to
- 29:33Speaker 2: take the safety, he gets gang tackled and the ball
- 29:37Speaker 2: is punched out from his grasp. It pops out.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Loose.
- 29:40Speaker 2: A Vanderbilt defender falls on it. Instant touchdown as the
- 29:44Speaker 2: time expires, or so they thought. Vanderbilt wins 34-31. People
- 29:48Speaker 2: go crazy. Vanderbilt won and the officials stop playing and say,
- 29:51Speaker 2: hold on, hold on. There was one second left on
- 29:57Speaker 2: the clock. Okay, the touchdown stands, but there's one second left.
- 30:01Speaker 2: So Vanderbilt kicks the extra point, and there's your bad beat.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Vanderbilt wins by four, giving three and a half.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Significant to some.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And yes, very significant in that case.
- 30:14Speaker 3: And the obvious answer, I know it seems obvious now
- 30:16Speaker 3: for NC State, is as long as you're outside of
- 30:18Speaker 3: the end zone, you grab your defensive lineman. You hold him.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:22Speaker 3: And you allow the safety to take up the rest
- 30:24Speaker 3: of the time. Right.
- 30:26Speaker 2: And or one of the other outcomes you could have done,
- 30:28Speaker 2: and I've said this in the past, they could have
- 30:30Speaker 2: gone from the shotgun, snapped it back to him, and
- 30:33Speaker 2: he could have thrown the ball way downfield to have
- 30:37Speaker 2: it take up the time. And what would have happened?
- 30:40Speaker 2: What could have happened? The officials could then have flagged
- 30:43Speaker 2: him for what they did to Tom Brady in the
- 30:45Speaker 2: Super Bowl, calling an intentional grounding in the end zone.
- 30:47Speaker 2: There's nobody out there. Okay, you give up the two points,
- 30:49Speaker 2: but by then, just about all of the time has
- 30:52Speaker 2: run out, if not all of the time. In other words,
- 30:54Speaker 2: there were other options other than allowing the defense to
- 30:57Speaker 2: swarm about you, forcing a fumble. You give up a fumble,
- 31:01Speaker 2: you lose the game.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 31:03Speaker 2: And then for those who had money on taking the
- 31:06Speaker 2: underdog NC State... The three and a half points, the
- 31:09Speaker 2: extra point after the one second puts back, just completes.
- 31:13Speaker 2: That's chef's kiss on how you ruin somebody's day on
- 31:17Speaker 2: a bad beat.
- 31:18Speaker 3: That's calling the hotline, not because you have a problem,
- 31:21Speaker 3: but because your heart's broken.
- 31:22Speaker 2: It's amazing. All right, up next, speaking of broken hearts,
- 31:26Speaker 2: we have Inconceivable on a Monday on 13 Under the
- 31:28Speaker 2: Zone on the iHeartRadio app. Second hour of the program
- 31:36Speaker 2: here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone. Craig Way
- 31:39Speaker 2: alongside the producer, Jay Kerman. Glad to have you with
- 31:41Speaker 2: us today. Coming up here in just a few minutes,
- 31:43Speaker 2: we're going to hear from the NFL.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Side of things. From Ryan Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Dak Prescott, now a Cowboys record-setting quarterback. And also from
- 31:54Speaker 2: D'Amico Rines, where things are not going as well in Houston.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I want to go back to the text from our
- 31:59Speaker 2: guy talking about the offense. And I didn't want you
- 32:01Speaker 2: to think I was just blowing it off or going
- 32:02Speaker 2: through it. you make some very good points with only
- 32:05Speaker 2: the three explosive plays. Now, some of that's been trying
- 32:09Speaker 2: to get a more concerted running game together on that,
- 32:15Speaker 2: and they didn't do as well on that as they
- 32:18Speaker 2: did in that fourth quarter when they really had to
- 32:20Speaker 2: have it against Ohio State. It was good to get
- 32:23Speaker 2: Derek Cooper back on the field. I think probably we're
- 32:25Speaker 2: all in agreement that he can run in a little
- 32:28Speaker 2: bit different way than the other two backs than– Hollywood Smothers,
- 32:32Speaker 2: and Raleigh Brown. So it was good with that department. And,
- 32:40Speaker 2: you know, whether you want to call it choppy, leaky,
- 32:42Speaker 2: however you want to term it, it wasn't effective as
- 32:46Speaker 2: it needed to be. Now, again, all things are certainly relative.
- 32:52Speaker 2: And Sark said, I'm not going to apologize for a
- 32:55Speaker 2: 24-point win. The defense carried the day. Definitely. They held
- 33:00Speaker 2: UTSA to 142 yards of total offense. They held UTSA
- 33:04Speaker 2: without a touchdown. First time UTSA has gone without a
- 33:06Speaker 2: touchdown in six years in a game. Last time that
- 33:10Speaker 2: happened was 2020. So there are some noteworthy things that
- 33:13Speaker 2: came from that, but there are areas you heard Arch
- 33:17Speaker 2: Manning say it himself. that he said it got to
- 33:20Speaker 2: be better. And we'll hear more from him tomorrow because
- 33:22Speaker 2: he had the later media availability today. We'll hear from
- 33:27Speaker 2: Arch tomorrow and from Longhorn players tomorrow. But they do
- 33:32Speaker 2: have to be better. Absolutely. They have to be better
- 33:36Speaker 2: in the run game and the blocking schemes. There were
- 33:39Speaker 2: even a couple of snaps rolled back to Manning. Arch
- 33:42Speaker 2: missed some throws over through some guys. Somebody on the
- 33:44Speaker 2: text line said, I think after he took that hit
- 33:46Speaker 2: with the helmet, lost his helmet. He was missing throws
- 33:50Speaker 2: before that. Can't write it off to that. We saw
- 33:53Speaker 2: some overthrows before he had the helmet contact and the
- 33:59Speaker 2: helmet came off. So it is what it is in
- 34:02Speaker 2: that respect. So they've got to do a better job
- 34:06Speaker 2: of executing. Where the Texter and I differ, and that's cool.
- 34:12Speaker 2: He is certainly entitled to his opinion. He thinks it's
- 34:15Speaker 2: scheme and play-calling. And every coach in the country is
- 34:19Speaker 2: in agreement that Sark's one of the best play-calling coaches
- 34:22Speaker 2: in the country. Texter doesn't believe that. And that's okay.
- 34:25Speaker 2: That's all right. I think it's about execution. Now, Sark
- 34:29Speaker 2: did take the blame and said rightfully so on that,
- 34:34Speaker 2: when they went on that fourth down and they tried
- 34:36Speaker 2: the reverse run around Ryan Wingo, got dropped for a loss.
- 34:39Speaker 2: He said, in the film room, in the good, the bad,
- 34:42Speaker 2: and the ugly session that they have every Monday morning,
- 34:44Speaker 2: he said, that one's on me. I thought we could
- 34:47Speaker 2: get to the edge a little quicker and turn it.
- 34:49Speaker 2: It didn't happen. He said, I'll take the blame for that.
- 34:51Speaker 2: That's a bad play call. He is not infallible on
- 34:55Speaker 2: play calling. And I want to make sure people understand
- 34:57Speaker 2: that I feel the same way too, because he says it.
- 35:01Speaker 2: But I think he still gives them the best option
- 35:03Speaker 2: in terms of their play calling. Now, the execution has
- 35:06Speaker 2: got to be better in terms of what the offensive
- 35:10Speaker 2: line has to do and, uh, what the running backs
- 35:13Speaker 2: have to do and hitting the right holes and not
- 35:15Speaker 2: cutting back into a different direction. Uh, I thought, uh, Sark,
- 35:20Speaker 2: and we're going to hear more from him coming up
- 35:21Speaker 2: in the second segment about Arch not in, in, in, uh,
- 35:28Speaker 2: Sark used the term both in the press conference and,
- 35:32Speaker 2: and with us on the post game show Saturday night
- 35:34Speaker 2: has to, uh, He said he thought maybe he kind
- 35:37Speaker 2: of fell in love with his legs a little bit
- 35:39Speaker 2: and was running more and kind of was pulling it
- 35:42Speaker 2: down and going a little further instead of trusting that
- 35:44Speaker 2: process a little more. So I think it all adds up.
- 35:49Speaker 2: And yet for all that, we are talking about a
- 35:50Speaker 2: team that won by 24 points on that. And had
- 35:52Speaker 2: he not subbed everybody out when the ball was inside
- 35:55Speaker 2: the 30-yard line late in the game, they might have scored.
- 35:58Speaker 2: And you want to talk about bad beats. Because everybody
- 36:01Speaker 2: pointed out the line was 30 and a half. It
- 36:04Speaker 2: would have won by 31.
- 36:05Speaker 3: I actually heard SVP, who you'll hear on the Bad
- 36:08Speaker 3: Beat segment tonight, talk about that on his podcast, which
- 36:11Speaker 3: I heard last night. He said that was one of
- 36:14Speaker 3: the picks, I think, that he gave out.
- 36:16Speaker 2: He said, yeah, take UTSA and the 30 and a half.
- 36:19Speaker 3: The 30 and a half and the triangle of toughness.
- 36:21Speaker 3: And he said, oh, that almost got hairy at the end.
- 36:23Speaker 2: It did, had the starters not been pulled. But that's
- 36:26Speaker 2: what happens. This is another reason why I counsel people.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I say I counsel people. People ask me, I'm like,
- 36:35Speaker 2: you're nuts if you're betting on college football, basketball.
- 36:38Speaker 3: I'm just telling you.
- 36:39Speaker 2: 18 to 22-year-olds and point spreads and over and unders
- 36:43Speaker 2: and first half totals and all that stuff.
- 36:45Speaker 3: But, Craig, those are innocuous. Those are innocent compared to
- 36:48Speaker 3: some of these player props that are out there.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's nuts. I mean, I wasn't even aware of
- 36:53Speaker 2: the ones I was wearing until I started watching the
- 36:54Speaker 2: bad beats thing. And I don't gamble. But it's one
- 36:58Speaker 2: of the most hilarious things. Let me tell you two
- 37:00Speaker 2: of the most hilarious things that I see on television
- 37:04Speaker 2: these days, in sports anyway. One is the bad beat
- 37:09Speaker 2: segment on Monday night. And I explained it to Linda,
- 37:14Speaker 2: you know, how it all works. And I point up
- 37:15Speaker 2: at the top scene. Now, there's the first half total.
- 37:18Speaker 2: They're supposed to be 64. And then this happens. She
- 37:21Speaker 2: picked up on that. And she's pretty entertained by it
- 37:23Speaker 2: as well. Okay. That's one thing. The other thing, if
- 37:30Speaker 2: you watch college football final, which by the way, I
- 37:33Speaker 2: think it's the best it's been in a long time.
- 37:36Speaker 2: I like the people doing it. I think, what's his name?
- 37:41Speaker 2: Kevin Connors?
- 37:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 37:44Speaker 2: He's the host. And he's got Trevor Maddich and he's
- 37:47Speaker 2: got EJ Manuel with him. And he does a really
- 37:51Speaker 2: good job without it getting too schtickish. which I think
- 37:55Speaker 2: the show had fallen prey to.
- 37:57Speaker 3: With the final verdict, Mark May, Lou Holtz.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Well, and even beyond that was the deal with Matt
- 38:03Speaker 2: Berry was doing with putting on the cap and gown
- 38:07Speaker 2: and the professor thing in the classroom. Come on, you know,
- 38:11Speaker 2: it's kind of silly. I don't think, here's where I've
- 38:14Speaker 2: differed with ESPN over the years. And I read a
- 38:16Speaker 2: really good piece in The Athletic about how a lot
- 38:21Speaker 2: of college football fans have become very wearied by the
- 38:26Speaker 2: direction of ESPN College Game Day and the Fox big
- 38:32Speaker 2: noon kickoff shows, the preview shows, that it's become more
- 38:36Speaker 2: about the in-your-face, that sort of stuff, Portnoy on Fox
- 38:43Speaker 2: and Pat McAfee and how it's become more about that
- 38:47Speaker 2: and less about just giving us a good solid football show. A,
- 38:53Speaker 2: I agree with all that. But B, I also understand.
- 38:56Speaker 2: I understand ratings and I also understand I'm not their demo.
- 39:02Speaker 2: You're the demo. You're the demo. The 18 to 35 demo.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Do you like that? Do you like the show with
- 39:09Speaker 2: McAfee and the current incarnation that it is now as
- 39:12Speaker 2: opposed to how it was with Lee Corso and some
- 39:14Speaker 2: of the other stuff and the way they did things?
- 39:18Speaker 3: I have mixed thoughts on the Pat McAfee experience. I do. Because...
- 39:22Speaker 3: I actually believe that it's authentic. And I and I
- 39:26Speaker 3: can appreciate that. I don't think he's, I mean, yes,
- 39:29Speaker 3: he's making himself larger than life, but I think that's
- 39:31Speaker 3: how he's been since he broke into the space. So I,
- 39:36Speaker 3: I appreciate the way the show metaphorically takes off its
- 39:40Speaker 3: top button. Right, right, right.
- 39:41Speaker 2: The way that Pat McAfee does strip down to the,
- 39:44Speaker 2: you know, the, the, uh, to the swimwear and diving
- 39:50Speaker 2: off the platform there at Miami, whatever, you know. I
- 39:54Speaker 2: get it. I understand the entertainment thing. When you accept
- 39:57Speaker 2: it and you move through it, okay, all right, I
- 39:59Speaker 2: get it. I understand that. But I will tell you this.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Watching McAfee play to the crowd every week where they
- 40:09Speaker 2: go to reminds me of my concert vending days when
- 40:13Speaker 2: I'd work a Van Halen concert when they had David
- 40:15Speaker 2: Lee Roth. swear, hand to God, this would happen every time.
- 40:20Speaker 2: We'd work a show at Reunion Arena, and they'd get
- 40:22Speaker 2: to an instrumental thing, and the music would go down
- 40:24Speaker 2: a little bit after they'd been rocking for a bit,
- 40:26Speaker 2: and Diamond Dave, David Lee Roth would come out, and he'd.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Go, Dallas, you kick ass.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Everybody would go crazy, and he goes, man, you people
- 40:35Speaker 2: are effing crazy. Next night in Houston, it's now what?
- 40:40Speaker 2: The Lakewood Church, Joel Osteen's church. Houston, you kick ass.
- 40:45Speaker 3: You people are effing crazy.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Two nights later in Oklahoma City at the then the myriad.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Oklahoma City. In other words, it's a show. I get it.
- 40:55Speaker 2: He's the same way. You saw how he was in Austin.
- 40:57Speaker 2: You saw how he was with the hottie-tottie and the stuff.
- 41:00Speaker 2: He's going to play that way. That's the entertainment element
- 41:03Speaker 2: of it. I get it.
- 41:05Speaker 3: And the show, as a result of it, really does
- 41:08Speaker 3: feel like a love letter to that campus and that community. Right.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Which is great, but do we need that for all
- 41:15Speaker 3: three hours? I miss some of the substantive state of
- 41:19Speaker 3: the sport back and forth and deep dive into games
- 41:22Speaker 3: that maybe aren't necessarily covered on ESPN. Just like the
- 41:25Speaker 3: way Fox's show might not go as deep on the SEC.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 41:30Speaker 2: That's the way that works. All right. Let's hear a
- 41:32Speaker 2: little bit here from the Cowboys. And we'll start it
- 41:36Speaker 2: off with Brian Schottenheimer on his team. Really putting up
- 41:43Speaker 2: some loaded numbers in that win over Washington yesterday.
- 41:47Speaker 7: You know, we were disappointing ourselves last game. I was
- 41:49Speaker 7: disappointing myself last game as a play caller. Had a
- 41:54Speaker 7: great week of prep. Felt good about the plan. And,
- 41:56Speaker 7: you know, we did a nice job moving the ball.
- 42:00Speaker 7: The plan was to come out and throw it around
- 42:02Speaker 7: a little bit. That was the plan. I know the
- 42:04Speaker 7: run numbers were pretty ugly. But that was a little
- 42:07Speaker 7: bit of the plan coming into this game.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, both put up big numbers in
- 42:13Speaker 2: tandem with one another as well.
- 42:15Speaker 8: They spent a lot of time together, man. They've thrown
- 42:17Speaker 8: a lot of balls together.
- 42:18Speaker 7: And, you know, it was really great to see Dak
- 42:23Speaker 7: break the record at home to CeeDee. I thought, you know,
- 42:27Speaker 7: George made some really tough catches at really big times
- 42:31Speaker 7: for us. Ryan Flournoy, Fergie, a couple touchdowns. Um, I
- 42:35Speaker 7: just thought, you know, the passing game was hitting on
- 42:38Speaker 7: all cylinders today.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 42:39Speaker 2: And so did he see a more locked in version
- 42:42Speaker 2: of Dak Prescott in the game?
- 42:44Speaker 7: No, he's always locked in, you know, um, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 7: I thought, uh, the focus on the sidelines throughout the
- 42:49Speaker 7: course of the game, you saw the competitive fire in them.
- 42:51Speaker 7: I mean, the guy's just a different, unique competitor, man,
- 42:55Speaker 7: the way he's wired and the way he loves his teammates.
- 42:58Speaker 8: He loves his game.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Uh, he loves the Lord.
- 43:00Speaker 7: He talked about that, you know, his confidence comes from
- 43:02Speaker 7: his faith and, uh, You know, just couldn't be more
- 43:05Speaker 7: proud of him. But back to your question, you know,
- 43:08Speaker 7: he and CeeDee have played a lot of football together.
- 43:11Speaker 7: And it was really cool to see those.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Two guys connect. 249 career touchdown passes. What does that
- 43:16Speaker 2: record say about Dak Prescott?
- 43:17Speaker 7: I mean, the man, you know, you can't talk about Dak,
- 43:20Speaker 7: the player, without starting with the man. The man is unique,
- 43:24Speaker 7: you know. He's just special. That's why, you know, I
- 43:28Speaker 7: was emotional watching the guy celebrate him in the locker room,
- 43:31Speaker 7: I hope. The cameras caught it because you could see
- 43:34Speaker 7: the love and admiration that he has from all of
- 43:35Speaker 7: his teammates. I mean, they literally, the way he plays
- 43:38Speaker 7: this game, the way he leads us is special. He's
- 43:42Speaker 7: a unique, special, special man. And I'm blessed to be
- 43:46Speaker 7: able to coach him.
- 43:47Speaker 2: And Dak was asked for his thoughts on breaking Tony
- 43:51Speaker 2: Romer's career passing touchdown record.
- 43:53Speaker 3: I'm blessed, honored.
- 43:54Speaker 9: As I've told you earlier in the week, records are
- 43:56Speaker 9: meant to be broken. This is my time to break
- 43:58Speaker 9: this one. pretty cool um to do it against you
- 44:01Speaker 9: know the team i scored i threw my first touchdown
- 44:02Speaker 9: against what 10 years ago or so so um definitely
- 44:06Speaker 9: humbling um something i don't take for granted that the
- 44:09Speaker 9: great history of this this organization of the past quarterbacks
- 44:13Speaker 9: before me obviously wearing to me the greatest one right
- 44:16Speaker 9: um and so uh super super honored super thankful god's
- 44:21Speaker 9: great um i'm not taking it lightly but as i
- 44:24Speaker 9: told y'all it's just the beginning i want to double
- 44:26Speaker 9: out a plan and play for a while so Just
- 44:28Speaker 9: getting started.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 44:30Speaker 2: The season hadn't started, at least not in the way
- 44:32Speaker 2: that the Houston Texans wanted to. They're now 0-2, and
- 44:35Speaker 2: D'Amico Ryans was asked about the running game struggles. They
- 44:38Speaker 2: only managed six points in the ballgame. Would they have
- 44:40Speaker 2: 20-something rushing yards, 21 or something? Anyway, he was asked
- 44:45Speaker 2: about the struggles they had and some of the decisions
- 44:47Speaker 2: they made in the red zone.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Today is just credit to the Bengals for how they
- 44:53Speaker 1: came out. They did a great job of capitalizing on
- 44:56Speaker 1: opportunities and their playmakers stepped up and they made the
- 45:00Speaker 1: plays they needed to make to put them in position
- 45:03Speaker 1: to win the football game for us just collectively as
- 45:06Speaker 1: a team the one key to this victory was controlling
- 45:10Speaker 1: the front and from an offensive perspective and we did
- 45:13Speaker 1: not control their front like we got outplayed up front
- 45:16Speaker 1: we couldn't run the ball well that forced us into
- 45:19Speaker 1: a A lot of passing situations. CJ did a good
- 45:22Speaker 1: job of throwing the ball around to distribute it to
- 45:24Speaker 1: different receivers. We couldn't find our way to get in
- 45:27Speaker 1: the end zone. So it was just poor situationally for
- 45:29Speaker 1: us to be in the red zone four times and
- 45:32Speaker 1: not to come away with touchdowns. That hurts us, our
- 45:37Speaker 1: short yardage. We got stuffed. We missed field goals, botched snaps.
- 45:41Speaker 1: So it was just not great situationally on our part.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Tough thing we'll hear more from D'Amico coming up a
- 45:47Speaker 2: little bit later up next back to hearing from Longwood's
- 45:49Speaker 2: head coach Steve Sarkeesian on 13 under the zone there he.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Is the uh one and only Diamond Dave I.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Think it's all Van Halen too there beautiful girl like
- 46:02Speaker 2: all the harmony right.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Here special plans anyway.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Uh I worked I think four different Van Halen tours
- 46:09Speaker 2: back then in the uh Early 80s.
- 46:12Speaker 3: He was quite the showman.
- 46:14Speaker 2: The band changed quite a bit, obviously, when he left
- 46:17Speaker 2: and Sammy Hagar got in, but I think the band
- 46:18Speaker 2: had a better sound when Hagar was in it as well.
- 46:22Speaker 2: But anyway, we were talking about David Lee Roth earlier.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Let's hear some more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 46:30Speaker 2: This is from the weekly press conference that we bring
- 46:33Speaker 2: you each Monday. here on The Zone, live at the
- 46:38Speaker 2: bottom of the hour in the 11 o'clock hour, around
- 46:40Speaker 2: 1130 with our Longhorn Monday sessions. He was asked about
- 46:49Speaker 2: Arch Manning, what he saw from Arch, and what was
- 46:56Speaker 2: the difference in what he saw in terms of the execution,
- 47:00Speaker 2: the missed passes, the hits he took, all of that
- 47:02Speaker 2: kind of stuff when he reviewed the video of it.
- 47:05Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, and I think a couple things as
- 47:07Speaker 5: a coach, you know, our job is to put our
- 47:10Speaker 5: players in the best position to be successful. And so
- 47:13Speaker 5: part of that is schematically, right, trying to scheme people
- 47:16Speaker 5: to get people open. But the other part of putting
- 47:19Speaker 5: players in position to be successful, that they have the
- 47:21Speaker 5: confidence to go execute those plays and they trust what
- 47:24Speaker 5: we do in practice to make that happen.
- 47:26Speaker 2: So.
- 47:28Speaker 5: Clearly, if we're not hitting those plays, if guys are
- 47:31Speaker 5: open for a variety of reasons, protections, misthrows, misreads, whatever
- 47:35Speaker 5: that could be, that's on us as coaches, right?
- 47:38Speaker 6: That's our job, right? That's what we're hired to do.
- 47:41Speaker 5: And so when we don't execute at an elite level,
- 47:44Speaker 5: I take full responsibility of that, that we're not operating
- 47:48Speaker 5: the way that I think we're capable of operating or
- 47:50Speaker 5: we wouldn't be running those plays. And so for me
- 47:53Speaker 5: with Arch, like I said, I felt like Arch was
- 47:55Speaker 5: a microcosm of a little bit of the bigger picture
- 47:57Speaker 5: Saturday night. We were just kind of, we got lethargic,
- 48:00Speaker 5: you know, we scored 17 points. I think we thought
- 48:03Speaker 5: we were just going to go up and down the
- 48:04Speaker 5: field like a scrimmage and a credit to UTSA. They battled,
- 48:08Speaker 5: they fought, they created a little pressure and We weren't
- 48:11Speaker 5: as quite in sync as we want to be, the
- 48:13Speaker 5: rhythm that we needed to be in. And Arch would
- 48:15Speaker 5: tell you the same thing. So today it was right
- 48:17Speaker 5: back to it, right? The attention to detail, the focus,
- 48:21Speaker 5: the rhythm, the timing, anticipation of throws of where they
- 48:24Speaker 5: need to go and where they.
- 48:26Speaker 6: Should be thrown on the field.
- 48:28Speaker 5: And that's our job as coaches is to get him
- 48:30Speaker 5: to understand that and trust that and to go let
- 48:31Speaker 5: it rip.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:34Speaker 2: To go let it rip. That's one thing on that.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Then he was asked, And this goes back to what
- 48:39Speaker 2: the texter was asking about. There's been only the three
- 48:41Speaker 2: explosive plays so far. So is there a balance there
- 48:45Speaker 2: between trying to kind of force feed some explosive plays
- 48:50Speaker 2: or having it organically come up in the offense to
- 48:54Speaker 2: where it works?
- 48:55Speaker 5: No, I think that's a really good point to make because,
- 48:59Speaker 5: you know, everybody that we play reads what you guys write, right?
- 49:05Speaker 5: And they listen to the pundits talk. and well, they
- 49:08Speaker 5: have this guy and they have that guy and they
- 49:10Speaker 5: have this guy. And so it's how do you defend
- 49:12Speaker 5: and how do you defend in a way to try
- 49:14Speaker 5: to minimize those guys? And so we're constantly looking for
- 49:16Speaker 5: opportunities for those explosive plays. But at the same time,
- 49:20Speaker 5: we need to be efficient as an offensive football team
- 49:23Speaker 5: and we've been a very good third down team right
- 49:26Speaker 5: now and if you're not going to get explosive plays
- 49:28Speaker 5: you have to be efficient on third down we've been
- 49:32Speaker 5: aggressive on fourth down we weren't as successful the other
- 49:34Speaker 5: night 0 for 2 and And then you've got to
- 49:36Speaker 5: maximize your opportunities when we get in the red area.
- 49:39Speaker 6: And the other night we weren't great.
- 49:40Speaker 5: I think we were two for five on touchdowns in
- 49:42Speaker 5: the red area. So to me, that was a little
- 49:44Speaker 5: more alarming. I think we were seven to 17 on
- 49:46Speaker 5: third down, oh, for two on fourth down and two
- 49:49Speaker 5: or five in the red area. So that's where we've
- 49:52Speaker 5: got to make sure if we're not going to get
- 49:53Speaker 5: the explosives because people are deploying people in a way
- 49:56Speaker 5: to try to minimize those. you have to be efficient
- 49:59Speaker 5: on third down in the red area to maximize those opportunities.
- 50:02Speaker 5: On the flip side of that, we have got to
- 50:04Speaker 5: continue to exhaust ourselves as a staff to find those explosives,
- 50:08Speaker 5: to create opportunities for explosives, and then hopefully the players
- 50:12Speaker 5: put them in position to trust why and when we're
- 50:14Speaker 5: calling those explosive-type plays to take.
- 50:16Speaker 6: Advantage of them.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Next, along came a couple of questions here and there
- 50:20Speaker 2: sprinkled around about this game being in Knoxville, about Arch...
- 50:26Speaker 2: Manning playing where Peyton Manning was an all-American where he
- 50:30Speaker 2: you know plied his craft when I was at him
- 50:35Speaker 2: seeing that dinner last Thursday and I was sitting with
- 50:37Speaker 2: Archie Manning Arch's granddad of course and Olivia they mentioned
- 50:41Speaker 2: they were definitely going to be at the game Peyton's
- 50:43Speaker 2: going to be at the game so Sark was asked
- 50:46Speaker 2: about that with the with the Manning family probably all
- 50:49Speaker 2: in attendance there. And how about Arch and his thoughts
- 50:52Speaker 2: on him going to the place where his uncle had
- 50:56Speaker 2: so many big exploits?
- 50:57Speaker 5: Arch and I, we were meeting this morning and I
- 51:00Speaker 5: just had assumed he'd been to Knoxville and been to Tennessee.
- 51:04Speaker 6: He's never been before.
- 51:05Speaker 5: So I'm sure it's pretty, you know, for the family
- 51:07Speaker 5: and for Arch, you know, to play on the field
- 51:09Speaker 5: that his uncle played on. And that's, again, just another,
- 51:13Speaker 5: it's all part of the journey. It's all part of
- 51:15Speaker 5: the story. Um, and so for him, I'm, I'm sure
- 51:19Speaker 5: there's going to be a special moment in there for
- 51:21Speaker 5: the family and for him. Um, but at the end
- 51:23Speaker 5: of the day, you got to go play, right? They
- 51:25Speaker 5: got natural grass. It's not turf, you know, it's going
- 51:28Speaker 5: to be loud. So we better have great, you know,
- 51:30Speaker 5: nonverbal communication ready to go.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Okay. Uh, another question with regard. uh, to the offense
- 51:36Speaker 2: about the running game and where he feels in the
- 51:37Speaker 2: comfort level on that right now.
- 51:39Speaker 3: Well, I love our runners.
- 51:40Speaker 5: You know, I think these guys are really good players.
- 51:42Speaker 5: I think they're tough. They're hard nose or physical. They
- 51:45Speaker 5: make people miss in tight quarters. You can see that
- 51:47Speaker 5: when you go watch the tape means some of these
- 51:50Speaker 5: misses that they're making safeties miss, um, is, is pretty,
- 51:53Speaker 5: is pretty special stuff. Um, you know, uh, I felt
- 51:58Speaker 5: bad a little bit for the frontline guys because we're
- 52:03Speaker 5: a good inside zone running team. We're a good duo
- 52:06Speaker 5: running team. I probably didn't get to enough outside zone
- 52:09Speaker 5: early enough in the game last week. We got to
- 52:13Speaker 5: it later and I thought Derek Cooper reaped the benefits
- 52:16Speaker 5: of that. I thought Michael Terry reaped the benefits of that.
- 52:18Speaker 5: It was great for those guys to see them run.
- 52:20Speaker 5: So We've got to make sure that we've got enough
- 52:22Speaker 5: variety in the run game week in and week out
- 52:24Speaker 5: to allow these guys to showcase.
- 52:27Speaker 6: All of the talents that they have.
- 52:29Speaker 5: And I think, again, I think Hollywood and Raleigh are
- 52:31Speaker 5: very special players. As I touched on Saturday night, it
- 52:34Speaker 5: was great to get Coop back, and obviously it was
- 52:37Speaker 5: really good to see Michael Terry run the ball.
- 52:39Speaker 3: Okay, all right.
- 52:40Speaker 2: And then one on the defensive side this hour, talking
- 52:43Speaker 2: about Justin Cryer. Cryer, if you've never heard him speak,
- 52:49Speaker 2: He's been with us, uh, I think on the post game, uh, throughout, um,
- 52:53Speaker 2: great team leader. Um, just very eloquent in a lot
- 52:56Speaker 2: of what he has to say, um, uh, about things.
- 53:01Speaker 2: And of course, remember, he's a guy who transferred him
- 53:03Speaker 2: from Florida state. So I believe is, uh, my broadcast partner,
- 53:07Speaker 2: Roger Wallace, who asked Sark about, um, about Justin Cryer, juice,
- 53:12Speaker 2: as they call him, about the leadership. And they knew
- 53:15Speaker 2: they were getting a good player, but did the leadership
- 53:18Speaker 2: element that blossomed so early from him with his team,
- 53:22Speaker 2: has that surprised Sark?
- 53:23Speaker 5: I guess yes and no. You don't always know exactly
- 53:27Speaker 5: what you're going to get. And here's a guy that
- 53:30Speaker 5: wanted to come back home, had played a lot of
- 53:32Speaker 5: football at Florida State, came back home. And to me,
- 53:36Speaker 5: this guy is squeezing every ounce of juice out of
- 53:40Speaker 5: this experience. He didn't just come in and, well, I
- 53:44Speaker 5: want to play and go to the league. It's like,
- 53:46Speaker 5: I want to be part of a championship team. I'm
- 53:48Speaker 5: going to pour into this culture. I want to be
- 53:50Speaker 5: a great teammate. I want to learn Coach Muschamp's defense.
- 53:54Speaker 5: I want to know it inside and out where I
- 53:55Speaker 5: can be a vocal leader on the field. And obviously,
- 53:57Speaker 5: he's wearing the green dot for us. So I think
- 54:00Speaker 5: what he's doing is squeezing every ounce of drop of
- 54:03Speaker 5: juice out of this experience. which is making his experience better.
- 54:07Speaker 5: You know, even today, I mean, we're on the field.
- 54:10Speaker 5: He's talking to me about offensive play calling when you're
- 54:13Speaker 5: behind and what's the thought process.
- 54:15Speaker 6: And where you can get to.
- 54:16Speaker 5: So he's a very cerebral guy, but yet he loves
- 54:19Speaker 5: the game of football. And so it goes above and
- 54:21Speaker 5: beyond just knowing what to do on a certain call.
- 54:25Speaker 6: He's thinking big picture.
- 54:26Speaker 5: And that's not easy to do, to fully invest in
- 54:31Speaker 5: yourself from the moment you get somewhere. And he's done that.
- 54:34Speaker 5: He's earned the respect of the locker room. He's earned
- 54:36Speaker 5: the respect of the coaching staff. So he's a pleasure
- 54:40Speaker 5: to have. Like a lot of our transfers, we have.
- 54:43Speaker 6: Been very fortunate.
- 54:44Speaker 5: And Juice is a great example that the player's one thing,
- 54:47Speaker 5: the person's another. And we got a great person That's
- 54:51Speaker 5: kind of wearing that green dot, leading that defense right
- 54:53Speaker 5: now that I think embodies all that we want that
- 54:57Speaker 5: person to embody.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Okay. All right. There it is from Sark. We'll hear
- 55:01Speaker 2: some more from Sark coming up next hour. We've got
- 55:03Speaker 2: some other college football notes to get to coming up
- 55:05Speaker 2: next here on 13 Under the Zone.
- 55:10Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 55:10Speaker 2: I would think that instead of a purple haze, I
- 55:12Speaker 2: would think that LSU would be seeing a blue haze.
- 55:18Speaker 2: after that. Or maybe the Bears saw Purple Haze yesterday
- 55:21Speaker 2: through all the rain and stuff when they couldn't get
- 55:23Speaker 2: past the Vikings.
- 55:24Speaker 3: The Purple People Eaters.
- 55:25Speaker 2: Yeah. They were doing all of that. Here on a
- 55:29Speaker 2: Monday on 13 Under the Zone, ESPN has come out
- 55:35Speaker 2: and they do this on Mondays. They come out with
- 55:37Speaker 2: two things. One, which I've always found entertaining in mid-September
- 55:46Speaker 2: to have updated college football playoff rankings where they are projection, projected,
- 55:54Speaker 2: and bowl projections. And we'll get to those in a moment.
- 55:56Speaker 2: The other thing they do is the power rankings. And
- 55:59Speaker 2: they say what we learned about, Heather Dennett writes the piece,
- 56:02Speaker 2: but then you have these rankings. So the power rankings
- 56:09Speaker 2: that came out today do have Texas, number one, just
- 56:13Speaker 2: like they are in the polls. And she writes, The
- 56:17Speaker 2: Longhorns' defense dominated UTSA, giving up only 142 yards, but
- 56:20Speaker 2: warning signs flashed on offense with an inconsistent performance by
- 56:24Speaker 2: Arch Manning, 17 of 33, 164 yards, two touchdowns. Coach
- 56:28Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian said none of Manning's nine carries for 50
- 56:31Speaker 2: yards were called runs and said Manning fell in love
- 56:33Speaker 2: with his legs and didn't want him having to shoulder
- 56:38Speaker 2: that much a load. On the upside, and this is
- 56:42Speaker 2: back to our texter who was complaining about the running
- 56:44Speaker 2: game a week ago, On the upside, five Texas running
- 56:48Speaker 2: backs ran for a combined 178 yards on four points,
- 56:51Speaker 2: six yards per carry. With a road game against Tennessee
- 56:55Speaker 2: this week, Manning said he'll have to play better for
- 56:57Speaker 2: the offense to have a good game. And he will
- 56:59Speaker 2: have to. Dave Wilson wrote that one, by the way.
- 57:01Speaker 2: So it's their staff that puts these together. But I
- 57:04Speaker 2: think that's a pretty good synopsis. Number two is Ole
- 57:08Speaker 2: Miss going up from number nine to number two. Number
- 57:11Speaker 2: three is Notre Dame dropping from two to three. David
- 57:16Speaker 2: Hale said CJ Carr was ordinary, 234 yards, no touchdowns.
- 57:20Speaker 2: And the ground game, again, was more quantity than quality,
- 57:23Speaker 2: although Nolan James Jr. did rack up 121 yards rushing. Instead,
- 57:27Speaker 2: it was the defense that really shined for the Irish
- 57:29Speaker 2: in a 27-10 win for Michigan State. Sounds a lot
- 57:32Speaker 2: like the Texas win over UTSA. Georgia held at number four.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Miami was at number five. Ohio State was number six.
- 57:43Speaker 2: from last week. Indiana, seven, same as last week. Alabama,
- 57:46Speaker 2: three spots from 11 to eight. LSU dropping from five
- 57:50Speaker 2: to nine. Now, again, these are the power rankings. And
- 57:55Speaker 2: David Hale wrote, well, at least it's out of the
- 57:57Speaker 2: way now. Losing at Ole Miss might have come as
- 58:01Speaker 2: a shock to the exuberant LSU fan base, but the
- 58:05Speaker 2: had a lot of advantages in the matchup from being
- 58:07Speaker 2: at home, having a quarterback who's been running that offense
- 58:10Speaker 2: for more than a year now, and an incredibly high clip. Plus,
- 58:13Speaker 2: of course, Pete Golding knows Kiffin and Charlie Weiss Jr.
- 58:17Speaker 2: better than anyone. And despite all that, and an early
- 58:20Speaker 2: 17-point deficit, the Tigers still had a chance, a shot
- 58:23Speaker 2: to win in the red zone late in the fourth quarter.
- 58:25Speaker 2: I don't know about when they would have had to
- 58:26Speaker 2: get the touchdown on a two-pointer to tie it, but
- 58:29Speaker 2: the point is taken. It's not an ideal outcome, but
- 58:32Speaker 2: it should probably be more reassuring than deflating. The playoff
- 58:35Speaker 2: is still a realistic goal in year one of a
- 58:37Speaker 2: long-term play for Kiffin. Okay. Then he goes on, BYU
- 58:42Speaker 2: at 10, USC 11, Penn State 12, Texas Tech 13,
- 58:47Speaker 2: Tennessee at 14, up one spot from 15, just like
- 58:50Speaker 2: in the polls, in the AP poll anyway. And the comment,
- 58:55Speaker 2: was in a lot of ways the first three games
- 58:57Speaker 2: on the ball schedule. First Furman, then unranked Georgia Tech,
- 59:01Speaker 2: and finally Kennesaw State were a perfect way to build
- 59:04Speaker 2: confidence for a program that had some pretty big questions
- 59:06Speaker 2: coming out of the offseason. Freshman quarterback Faison Brandon. was
- 59:10Speaker 2: able to settle in, finishing that three-game stretch with six
- 59:13Speaker 2: touchdowns and no interceptions. The defense, under new coordinator Jim Knowles,
- 59:17Speaker 2: was able to work out the kinks. Average points allowed, 14.
- 59:20Speaker 2: What stood out most, though, was the running game. which
- 59:25Speaker 2: averaged 298.6 rushing yards. Whether the progress of the early
- 59:29Speaker 2: part of the season holds up with the first major
- 59:32Speaker 2: test when number one Texas comes to town Saturday remains
- 59:36Speaker 2: to be seen.
- 59:36Speaker 3: So there's that.
- 59:37Speaker 2: All right, at number 15 is Florida, up from number
- 59:40Speaker 2: 22 to 15, and they talk about a lot of
- 59:42Speaker 2: different things. They say the biggest test of the season
- 59:44Speaker 2: for that secondary looms Saturday against Ole Miss. But Ole
- 59:49Speaker 2: Miss is actually the underdog, if you believe– The boys
- 59:54Speaker 2: in the desert.
- 59:55Speaker 3: What's the line on that? I think it's like three.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: I thought it was four at one point. I mean,
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: make sure it didn't move a lot based on what
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: happened over the weekend. But Ole Miss, yeah, is an
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: underdog going into Gainesville.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: DraftKings has it three and a half.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: Yeah, the odds. I see three now. Okay. All right.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: So it's right there.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: But it opened at one and a half. So the
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: odds makers were more impressed with Florida.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Initially.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Relatively compared to Ole Miss.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: No, I'm saying it's moved even further for Florida.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: And now it's moved back because I had it at
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: three and a half and you now have it at three.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: So it's pulled back to three there. But nevertheless, John
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Sumrall at his weekly news conference was asked about that
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: when somebody informed him that his team was actually favored
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: in the game.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Coming into this week ranked and favorite against the top
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: five team in the nation.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: Do you use that doubt this week to fuel it?
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: Who's got his favorite against these guys? Do they? There's
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: a lot of good drugs out there, huh? I mean, yeah.
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: I did talk to our team about the rankings in
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: week four. Nobody posts anything up in the building about
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: this year's team where you're ranked in week four.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: Nobody cares. And the same pats in the.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: Back you're getting, if you go out and lay an egg,
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: you're going to be the same hands hitting you in
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: the back, and there's going to be a knife in it. So,
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: you know, to me, I told our guys, like, ignore
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: all that. It's got nothing to do with– the goal
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: is how do we get to 1-0 each week. Well,
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: if we don't do a lot of self-improvement, we have
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: no shot this week. And so I didn't even know
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: the favorite deal, but whoever's doing that.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: Man, I don't know. I didn't watch tape. They got
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: the best quarterback in college football, I think. He's a dude.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: And so they got a lot of great weapons. So
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: we've got a lot to work on ourselves.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Okay, there it is. Plus there's a lot of good
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: drugs out there, right, as he says.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Elva, that's the first reaction. Yeah. One of those drugs
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: is rat poison. He doesn't want his team anywhere near it.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: That's right. The other thing I mentioned ESPN having is
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: their playoff and bowl projections. Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schleybaugh
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: did this. So here's what they have projected to be
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: in the college football playoff today on September 21st. First
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: round playoff games. The 12 versus 5. Bonagura has at
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: Boise State at Ohio State. Schleybaugh, how about this? He
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: has North Dakota State in the playoff in their first year.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: The bison with a Z, not an S. Yeah.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Um, their first year as a, um, uh, as, as
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: a bowl subdivision team, um, against No. 5 Indiana on that.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Bonagura in the 11-versus-6 matchup has LSU-Miami. Schlebaugh has Penn State-Miami.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: In the 10-versus-7 matchup, Bonagura has Penn State against Ole Miss.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Schlebaugh has LSU against Ohio State. And then in the
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: 8-9 matchup, it's the same matchup. Both have BYU at Alabama.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Bonagura has BYU-9 at the 8-seat Alabama matchup. Other way
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: around for Schleyball, nine seed Alabama and eight seed BYU.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: Boy, that's a matchup where home field would make a
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: huge difference.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. That's why it's important to point out the
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: difference on those two. The quarterfinals, Fiesta Bowl, Bonagura has
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Ohio State advancing to play Georgia in a five versus
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: four matchup. Schleyball has Indiana as a five seed against
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: the four seed Georgia. Um, and, uh, then on, uh,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: in the quarterfinals, um, Bonagura has Ole Miss against Indiana.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Schleybaugh has Ohio State against Ole Miss. Also in the quarterfinals,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Bonagura has Alabama advancing to play Notre Dame. The one seed,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Schleybaugh has Texas as the one seed to play BYU
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: advancing with a home win over Alabama. See, they said
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: that home field will matter a lot in that. And
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: the other quarterfinal matchup, Bonagura believes Texas will be the
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: three seed and play Miami. And Schleybaugh believes it'll be
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Miami against the three seed Notre Dame. In the Orange Bowl,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: then in the semifinals, Bonagura says it's the three-seed Texas
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: against the two-seed Indiana. Schleybaugh says it's the four-seed Georgia
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: against the number one seed Texas.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Boy, that's a rematch of probably his SEC championship if
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: he's got them both seeded one and four.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: Could well be. And then in the Sugar Bowl, the
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: other semifinal, Bonagura has the four-seed Georgia against one-seed Notre Dame.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Schleybaugh has the seven-seed Ohio State against the six-seed Miami
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: on that. And then in the national championship, neither has
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Texas in the national championship. Bonagura has the two-seed Indiana
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: against the one-seed Notre Dame. Schleybaugh has the seven-seed Ohio
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: State against the four-seed Georgia. When Ohio State won two
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: years ago, they were an eight-seed, right? They were an
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: eight seed. They beat Tennessee, and then they beat Texas,
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: and then went on to win the national championship over
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Notre Dame. Well, Craig, the records of these teams before
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Indiana did what they did as a number one seed
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: with that buy. You take that, who's your team out
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: of it?
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: The records aren't so good for teams that have the
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: buy by being in that top four in this format.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: That's why.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: That's why I'm in favor of what would be a
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: 16-team playoff. Everybody plays the same amount of games. It
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: looks like we're going to get the 24-team playoff where
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: you get eight teams that get buys. Now, the floor
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: is going to be lower. So the teams that would
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: come in in those seeds 17 through 24... they're going
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: to be down there a little bit further than the
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: ones we've been seeing in that five up to number
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: 12 with the four buys to this point. So we'll
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: see how that all shakes up. We'll be back to
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: wrap up our number two on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: A win that takes Texas to 3-0, heading into their
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: SEC opener as the Longhorns will open up. sec play
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: coming up on saturday morning at 11 o'clock it's an
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: 11 10 a.m kickoff and our coverage begins on the
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: zone beginning at 7 a.m with the third and longhorn
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: podcast guys their preview eight o'clock we'll bring about the
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: longhorns game day show from backport social in round rock
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: and then at 10 o'clock, the network pregame, and then
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: the kickoff at 11, Texas to play in Knoxville, Tennessee
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: for the first time in their football history. Third hour
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: of the program here on 13 Under the Zone, Craig
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Way and the producer, Jake Herman, with you. We talked
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: quite a bit of overview NFL in the first hour
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: of the program. Tonight, week number two concludes, Rams to
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: take on the Giants. I don't want to say it's
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: a must-win for the Rams, but it's a must-win. They
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: lose that game with 2-0 San Francisco there. 2-0 Seattle there,
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: having already lost the 49ers. They have to play the
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Seahawks twice. They have to go to Santa Clara to
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: play them again. They are going to Denver next week. So, yeah,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: pretty critical for them to get back on the horse
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: and get it going. And don't know if Pukunuku is
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: going to play. He's going to be a game-time decision
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: on that. I think we'll see Aaron Donald on the field.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: He's activated for it, but the Rams have not said
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: for sure if he's going to play. Meanwhile, the Giants
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: come off that win over the Cowboys, riding high, feeling
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: pretty good about themselves. Run the ball a little bit,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: and they pass the ball, and they play some defense
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: to it.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: They can, and if we see a version of Jackson
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Dart that is as efficient on third down as he
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: was against the Dallas Cowboys, that can spell trouble for
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: the Rams tonight. I do expect them to be able
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: to get pressure even without the presence of Miles Garrett
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: in there. I think Aaron Donald gives them some major
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: wind in the sails, if not from him directly, from
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: the guys around him who, you know, want to impress
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: the future Hall of Famer they're playing alongside.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: I think so. So we'll see. as those two go
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: at it tonight. Okay, I want to go back to
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: the Cowboys coming off yesterday's win over the Washington Commanders,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: and head coach Brian Schottenheimer was asked about, you know,
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: after he had talked about uh, Dak Prescott, uh, first
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: of all, he was, he was, he was asked if
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: he saved Dak for last in his locker room speech
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: when they handed him a game ball. I did.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: I did.
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: Uh, yeah, we started with, uh, uh, field goals. Then
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: we went to defense. Then we did the touchdown passes.
- 1:09:16Speaker 7: And then we went to Dax and on, uh, The
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: fourth one, we had the ball, and we presented him
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: the ball, and he was able to make an amazing
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: speech to his teammates. And as you guys can imagine,
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: it was a lot about what motivates him. And it's
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: not about him. It's about them, the guys looking at him.
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: And it was a very emotional scene.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: I just described that Rams-Johns game as a must-win for
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: the Rams. Did it shock?
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: Neimer think it was a must win for his team no.
- 1:09:51Speaker 7: I you know i was um like i said very
- 1:09:56Speaker 7: excited to get out there and compete again we know
- 1:09:59Speaker 7: we're a better football team than the one that showed
- 1:10:01Speaker 7: up in new york uh last sunday and uh i
- 1:10:04Speaker 7: think we showed that tonight and um again a lot
- 1:10:07Speaker 7: to clean up there's some things still on third down
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: we got to clean up I thought we did a
- 1:10:11Speaker 7: really nice job defensively in the red zone. I thought
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: that was great to see that. That's big. You know,
- 1:10:17Speaker 7: the fourth down stop at the end of the half
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: was huge. And I just thought we played better. But,
- 1:10:20Speaker 7: you know, we were excited about this opportunity.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Anybody that watched Schottenheimer on the sideline saw him pretty
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: revved up, pretty fired up, pretty emotional.
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: Why was he so much more emotional in this game?
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: You know, I think it was more of, again, just,
- 1:10:36Speaker 7: you know, I know what we have, you know. And
- 1:10:39Speaker 7: this is a tough business. I know what we're built from.
- 1:10:42Speaker 7: I know what we're about as a group of young
- 1:10:44Speaker 7: men that have come together and forged a special and
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: unique brotherhood.
- 1:10:47Speaker 8: And they have a bond.
- 1:10:49Speaker 7: And, you know, I hurt for them last game, you know,
- 1:10:54Speaker 7: because we didn't play our best football.
- 1:10:56Speaker 8: But I knew what we were capable of. And now
- 1:10:59Speaker 8: we've got to go and try to stack some wins.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: The biggest takeaway from the first game was the lack
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: of communication on defense. So did he see and hear
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: better communication from his defense in this one? Yeah, I
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: think it was.
- 1:11:16Speaker 7: I think you didn't see the, I mean, they got
- 1:11:18Speaker 7: us on a double pass that, you know, fortunately they
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: couldn't connect on that. But overall, I thought the communication
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: was better. There's certainly things to clean up. We certainly
- 1:11:27Speaker 7: did a poor job of containing Jaden, you know, but
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: he can do that. He does that to a lot
- 1:11:32Speaker 7: of people. That's really where the rush yards got away.
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: And then, you know, we got some things to improve
- 1:11:36Speaker 7: on third down. I thought we really rushed the passer well.
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: I don't know what the pressure numbers were. You guys
- 1:11:41Speaker 7: will have to give me those. But I know we
- 1:11:43Speaker 7: didn't get any sacks, but he and Marcus were both,
- 1:11:46Speaker 7: you know, moved off the spot quite a bit. And
- 1:11:48Speaker 7: so I felt good about that. But there's always things
- 1:11:52Speaker 7: to clean up. You know, we certainly have not arrived.
- 1:11:55Speaker 7: We got a lot of work to do.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: They probably feeling run the ball better despite all the
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: passing yards from Dak Prescott. They were held at just
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: 66 rushing yards.
- 1:12:04Speaker 7: I didn't think the numbers would be 66 yards, Tommy,
- 1:12:06Speaker 7: but like I said, I did want to come out
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: and spread them out and use some of our play-action
- 1:12:11Speaker 7: passing game. Dak did a really nice job running. And
- 1:12:14Speaker 7: then again, we had the long one called back in
- 1:12:16Speaker 7: the fourth quarter. That was a nice run by Javante.
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: It's a good front. They're explosive and powerful, and they
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: did a nice job. But again, the commitment there from
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: me was Hey, we're going to come out throwing the
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: ball around, and I think it worked pretty well for us.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: On that defensive side, Jay Sean Barham was wearing the
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: green dot on the helmet for communication. What with the injury, certainly,
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: you know, with the entire linebacking corps. So, you know,
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: not just... in the initial phase of what happened in
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: game one, but there were more injuries in game two.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: So Barham was wearing that green dot. What do you
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: think of that?
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: Yeah, I think he did a really tremendous job. You know,
- 1:13:02Speaker 7: we had to rotate green dot some when Shamar would
- 1:13:05Speaker 7: come in in certain packages.
- 1:13:07Speaker 8: I thought overall we handled that really well.
- 1:13:09Speaker 7: And then Jay Sean, you know, had a couple of
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: stingers and he's tough, man. And I think you love
- 1:13:14Speaker 7: that about him. We knew that's what we were getting
- 1:13:16Speaker 7: when we drafted him. And he showed that tonight.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Okay, and in the final analysis, did he see enough
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: improvement from week one?
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: Until I watch the film, I won't really comment on that. Again,
- 1:13:26Speaker 7: we don't feel like we have a finished product. I
- 1:13:30Speaker 7: think there's a lot of things to clean up. Like
- 1:13:31Speaker 7: I said, the third down, we got to get people
- 1:13:33Speaker 7: off the field on third down. But the red zone
- 1:13:35Speaker 7: was an improvement. We won the turnover margin, which is good.
- 1:13:37Speaker 7: That gives you a chance to win. But like I said,
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: the one thing I'll say about the defense and CP
- 1:13:43Speaker 7: this week was they were like this, man. They didn't blink.
- 1:13:46Speaker 7: I've been in a tough situation like that before. as
- 1:13:49Speaker 7: a young coordinator and not sure, and you're taking a
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: lot of bullets. He didn't blink, and that's a sign
- 1:13:54Speaker 7: of a competitor that has a very, very bright future.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: Okay. On to Dak Prescott. Got the game ball. You know, shoddy,
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: had some things to say to him, but Prescott was
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: also asked how his teammates honored him in the locker room.
- 1:14:14Speaker 8: Made me emotional. I mean, I love those guys.
- 1:14:17Speaker 9: I lay it on the line each and every day,
- 1:14:19Speaker 9: My love for this game, my love for my teammates,
- 1:14:22Speaker 9: any and every teammate that I've had. You know, there's
- 1:14:24Speaker 9: tons of guys that aren't in that locker room that
- 1:14:26Speaker 9: I think about when I break this record, whether it's
- 1:14:28Speaker 9: them catching the ball or them blocking or them on defense,
- 1:14:32Speaker 9: you know, and just giving me confidence and getting the
- 1:14:33Speaker 9: ball back. But to see my teammates act that way,
- 1:14:38Speaker 9: to see guys that have only been together for, you know, five,
- 1:14:41Speaker 9: six months, you know, have the joy, have the cheers
- 1:14:44Speaker 9: that they do, it was emotional. Very, very appreciative of it.
- 1:14:49Speaker 9: Shows me what this brotherhood means.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: It reminds me.
- 1:14:52Speaker 9: That everything that I do, the conversations that I have,
- 1:14:56Speaker 9: don't go unnoticed.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: And just reminds me how blessed I am.
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: There it is from Dak Prescott. Cowboys with the win.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: Texans with the loss. A little bit later this hour,
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: more from D'Amico Ryans. Up next, more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, when we continue on 1300 The Zone and
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: New York City ain't no kind of place for a
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: country girl with.
- 1:15:16Speaker 8: A friendly face.
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: If you smile, people look at you funny, they take
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: it wrong.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: You know, it's a shame we lost Dolly Parton here
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago. If she's still around and
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: still in good health, she probably would have been asked
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: to be the guest picker for college game day on
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Saturday when they're in Knoxville. One of four head-to-head matchups.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: Between ranked teams, all out of that same conference, that's
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: a record for including top-ranked Texas at number 14, Tennessee.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: Speaking of the Longhorns getting ready for that, Longhorns head
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: coach Steve Sarkeesian, in the press conference we brought to
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: you this morning here on The Zone, was talking about
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: certain guys who have taking up the leadership mantle and
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: are backing up with their play on field. And one
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: of those is the senior safety, Jelani McDonald.
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought Jelani had a really good game Saturday night.
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: You know, I felt like he really stepped his game up.
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: And that, you know, again, human nature is human nature.
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: Some guys could maybe have a little bit of a
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: lull coming off of that game we had two weeks
- 1:16:26Speaker 5: ago and then what's coming this week. But I thought
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: Jelani took his game to another level. I thought from
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: a communication standpoint, the range he shows in the back end,
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: his ability to trust his preparation and dissect things and
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: go attack it. His veteran leadership back there is important
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: for us. And so the communication is huge. The range
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: in the back end is big for us, his ability
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: to cover ground. And then him playing with confidence, you know,
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: I think is a really big deal. I think that
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: that rubs off on the other guys.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Now, back to the offense. And Sark was asked if
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: there are any common denominators that he has seen when
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: the offense has struggled away from home on the road.
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: I felt like a year ago there was a level
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: of immaturity. And I'm not saying immaturity like– I'm saying
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: football IQ immaturity, you know.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: We– We had false starts.
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: We would make errors that were uncommon errors, and in turn,
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: the line of scrimmage would get leaky. The pass protection
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: wasn't what we wanted. We had dropped balls. We had
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: things that added up to not playing well on the road. Now, granted,
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: played some tough environments. We didn't play great at Ohio State, Georgia,
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: and Florida as an offensive football team. Hopefully this year
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: we'll find out. It's not what we say. It's going
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: to be what we do. We've got a more mature unit, right?
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: We've got an experienced quarterback. We've got two experienced runners, right?
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: We've got experience on the line of scrimmage. We've got
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: experience at wide receiver. So now it's leaning into that
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: experience that we have and playing with better poise and
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: composure and executing in the moment, okay? And so we've
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: got to make it a stressful environment this week in
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: practice with crowd noise and different things. But ultimately, when
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: Saturday comes, having great poise and composure and executing the
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: plan to the best of their ability.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: He was asked a couple of questions about that whole
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Manning thing, Knoxville deal, Manning family up there, Peyton, of course,
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: having played there, and here's Arch going in for the
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: first time. Did he have some discussions with him about
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: his uncles and those games and stuff like that?
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: I talked to him about that this morning, and that
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: was one part of it. I think at the end
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: of the day, you're the quarterback at Texas. Your last
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: name's Manning. um regardless of what you do you're going
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: to get critiqued you're going to get criticized i'm the
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: head coach at texas regardless of what i do i'm
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: going to get critiqued i'm going to get criticized who
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: really gives a crap just go play man go be
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: you you can't try to be something you're not you
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: got to go be you and if you're you that's
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: gonna be you to the best of your ability. The
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: goal is to try to win them all. The goal
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: is to play great every week. Whether that happens or not,
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: we'll find out. But at least you're putting your best
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: foot forward to be what you're capable of being. And
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: so I think that that was part of the messaging
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: for Arch was like, I want him to be him.
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: And I want him to be him every Saturday. I
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: want him to be him every series. Who he is
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: is an engaging leader. Who he is is a guy
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: that picks other people up. Who he is is a
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: guy that, doesn't play the position like a robot. He
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: uses his legs to his advantage, but he doesn't use
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: his legs all of the time. And we don't call
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: design runs for him all the time, but he's got
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: a weapon in his legs that are a factor in
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: which he plays the game. And so using those at
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: opportune times is beneficial for him and it's beneficial for us.
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: But I do think that that's important for him is
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: to not to try to be something that doesn't best
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: suit him.
- 1:20:03Speaker 6: I want him to be him. I want him to
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: be Arch Manning. I don't want him to be Archie.
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: I don't want him to be Peyton. I don't want
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: him to be Eli.
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: I don't want him to be Colt McCoy. I don't
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: want him to be Vince Young. I want him to
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: be Arch Manning. And Arch Manning is plenty good enough
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: for us to put us in position to win.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: Okay. All right.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: So is there any specific message you can give Arch
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: that would help him in a week like this?
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: Honestly, I don't think he's going to care too much
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: about that. Don't take anything away from Peyton. I don't
- 1:20:30Speaker 5: think he's thought that much about he's playing at Tennessee. Like,
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: it'll be a cool moment, I'm sure, for the family.
- 1:20:35Speaker 6: I don't think Arch... cares that much. I think he
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: cares more.
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: About playing really good for his teammates and being connected
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: with his team. You know, I think that the biggest
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: advice I can give him is the same thing I
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: gave the team.
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: It's going to be 103,000 fans.
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: You know, we're going to have 74 players and probably
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: another 30 to 40 staff members.
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: That's pretty much all we got.
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: But that's plenty enough to go win, right?
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: That's all we really need.
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: And so being connected to his teammates, whether it's the
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: defense on the field, special teams, offensive linemen, like we
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: have to be there for one another. And when we're
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: at our best, that's how we operate when we're on
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: the road.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: Okay. All right. Uh, what about going up against Jim Knowles?
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: A guy that the Longhorns have seen plenty of in
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: recent years, first with Oklahoma state. And then of course, uh,
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: a couple of years ago with Ohio state.
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: Yeah, he's good.
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: You know, it was obviously seen a lot of football
- 1:21:24Speaker 6: in his time.
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: Um, You know, he's been a guy that isn't afraid
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: to step outside the box and do some things that
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: in our world would be considered unorthodox. But at the
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: same token, it's sound in what he does. And that's,
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: I think, just through experience. He's seen a lot of
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: different things and seen a lot. I think he does
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: a really good job of playing to the strengths of
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: the personnel that he has on his team.
- 1:21:52Speaker 6: You know, back in the day.
- 1:21:56Speaker 5: When he was at Oklahoma State, he had a really
- 1:21:59Speaker 5: veteran secondary. I think they had five seniors back there,
- 1:22:02Speaker 5: and they were disguising coverages and doing a lot of
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: different things. And he had a really good pass rusher
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: that he would move around. He'd put them in the
- 1:22:09Speaker 5: line of scrimmage in an odd front, and he'd play
- 1:22:11Speaker 5: them off the edge. He'd do different things. You know,
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: we played him a few years later. We get to
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: Ohio State. He's got Caleb Downs back there. He's got
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: Averill Reese. He's got Sonny Stiles. everything went through those
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: three guys and how he moved those pieces around. And
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: so now he's got a different cast. And so how
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: he implements those players on his team to put them
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: in position to be the playmakers, I think is one
- 1:22:38Speaker 5: of his strengths, not to take away anything else, but
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: I think that's something that he does really well.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Clearly, in hearing from Sark throughout this press conference, in
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: hearing from the players who follow, and again, we'll bring
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: you the player comments tomorrow, including those of Arch Manning,
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: brief though they may be, and guys like Justin Cryer,
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: who can go on at length. Hiro Kanu, a couple
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: of those guys. Clearly, it's a pretty big challenge that
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: they have on the road, playing a Tennessee team that
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: not only is unbeaten, has been very impressive in their wins.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: I know they haven't played it, though. Best team they
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: played has been Georgia Tech. And Georgia Tech has proven
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: to be not what they were a year ago. But still,
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: they've been very, very technically sharp and sound so far.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: So how excited is SART to see the team excited
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: about a road challenge like this?
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: I think it goes all the way back to the offseason, right?
- 1:23:42Speaker 5: The connectivity, the culture work. I mean, because that's what
- 1:23:45Speaker 5: you have to have, right? You have to play as one.
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: You can't be fragmented. You can't splinter on the road.
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: Adversity is going to strike. You've got to play really
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: good complementary football in all three phases. And you've got
- 1:23:58Speaker 5: to be there for one another. You got to be
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: really tight, you know, and that culture work that we
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: do to find that connectivity amongst this team, to find
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: that love, you know, and when you can get into
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: the love, I mean, love is the most powerful thing
- 1:24:12Speaker 5: in the world. When you do it for love, that's special.
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: And so, I am excited for this team because this
- 1:24:18Speaker 5: is a new challenge, right? Each week is a different
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: challenge that you get faced with, and that's one of
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: the challenges this week of how connected can we be,
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: how well can we play complementary football, how well can
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: we feed off of one another in pregame, on the sidelines,
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: when adversity strikes. That's going to be one of the
- 1:24:36Speaker 5: keys to the drill Saturday when the ball gets kicked off.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: One of the things that kind of got a little
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: bit glossed over in the review of the things that
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: did not go well for the offense, were some bright
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: moments for a couple of youngsters on the offensive side.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Jermaine Bishop out on the field. And then, obviously, Derek Cooper,
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: who was back in the lineup after having to miss
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: the Ohio State game, was banged up in the first
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: contest of the season against Texas State. But Cooper came back, obviously.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: He ran the ball well, scored his first touchdown as
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: a collegian, as a Texas Longhorn player. in the game
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: that last Texas touchdown as well so Sark was asked
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: you know when it comes down to the fact that
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: uh you know not not everybody played that well on
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: offense there were some guys who did step up who
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: did perform a little bit who did deliver Jermaine Bishop
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: was one of the guys and one of those two
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: guys obviously and Derek Cooper was another one of those
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: guys who made a splash for the offensive unit. And
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: that did not get overlooked by the head coach.
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I thought both those guys, Jermaine, obviously
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: we saw him get the ball in his hands a
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: couple times.
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: You could feel his speed and explosiveness.
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: You know, we added a 10 personnel package last week
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: and getting him on the field with Wingo and Coleman
- 1:25:59Speaker 5: and Mosley and Smothers. I mean, those are a lot
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: of weapons on the field. So hopefully we can continue
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: to find ways to get him incorporated. not to mention
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: what he did on special teams. I thought he played
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: really well on special teams for us. Derek Cooper, again,
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: I knew he wasn't going to be 100% Saturday night,
- 1:26:16Speaker 5: but I felt like I needed to play him to
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: get him back into the rhythm of playing. You could
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: feel his physicality. The guy falls forward when he runs
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: the ball. Even on his touchdown run, he's getting met
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: before he hits the goal line and finds his way in.
- 1:26:29Speaker 5: So he provides a little something different for us, which
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: is good. We're always pushing our young players, and the
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: more they show us that they can do things right consistently,
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: we're going to put them out there. We'll find a role,
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: whether it's on special teams, whether it's on offense, whether
- 1:26:44Speaker 5: it's on defense. We'll keep finding a way to get
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: guys out there and contribute. To name those guys specifically,
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: I'm not sure yet. We'll see how the week of
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: practice goes and who we can get out there a
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: little bit more.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: I always like it when coaches mention when they're talking
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: about running backs, those who have a quote-unquote forward lean.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: I think the first... player I heard really from Texas
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: I heard really described in that category now I mean
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: you know if you go way on back to Earl
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: Campbell and some of the other guys as well but
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: the first person I really heard described in that vernacular
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: really was Ricky Williams and then after him Cedric Benson
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: Greg Davis the offensive coordinator used to say you know
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: it looked like it was going to be minus one
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: or one. And in that forward lean and the way
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: they could push could wind up getting a three, sometimes
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: even a four yard gain out of that. And I
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: think they see this coaching staff kind of see some
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: of what they might be able to get from Derek
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Cooper in that end. All of that said, with the
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: offense not hitting all the cylinders that everybody is touched upon,
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: is it missing some sort of an ingredient that makes
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: it go? And might it be designed runs for arch
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: manning because you know even though he had what 50
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: yards rushing none of it were designed runs he was
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: running on his own so um might that be an
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: ingredient that can be incorporated more more designed runs for
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: arch manning.
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: I think the thing that we're missing is a four
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: quarter consistency you know the week before we scored 21
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: points in the fourth quarter This week we come out,
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: we score 17 points in the first three drives. And
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: so how do we sustain that for four quarters? How
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: do we do it with a real level of consistency?
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: I think that's what we're striving for offensively. Every game
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: is different. Every game plan is different.
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: What do we need?
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: What do we think we need to do to be
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: as effective as we can be? We went and recruited
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: the runners that we got for that reason. I felt
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: like Arch on design runs last year took his toll
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: on him, but we will be strategic when we can
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: use his legs to our advantage. I'm fearful of making
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: a living of going down that road Um, we got
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: a long season and it's a physical season that we
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: need to play. I think he needs to be smarter
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: when he runs. I'd like for him not to get
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: his helmet knocked off on his second one. He's already
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: got a first down. It's okay to get down, you know,
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: so we got it. We got to keep coaching that
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: aspect of his game. But to your point, yes, there
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: will be design runs. And we've had design runs in
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: previous weeks. We just haven't called them, right? You use
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: them when you think you need them at most.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: All right, there it is from the head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. Tomorrow,
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: we'll hear a lot more in terms of player sound.
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: And tomorrow, we're going to hear from Sean Miller, Texas
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: basketball coach. He also did a media availability today. And
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: we'll hear from him and his thoughts. Because today was
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: the first full day of official team practices today. So
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: we'll hear Sean Miller tomorrow on that. All right, up next,
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: back to the NFL, back to D'Amico. Ryan's talking about
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: his Texans 0-2 start. That's next on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: What are you rolling back with here, Jay? We got
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: a cut from the Beach Boys in Susie, Cincinnati.
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: Haven't heard that in a while.
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: Me either.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Yeah, Cincinnati Bengals beat the Houston Texans yesterday. Before I
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: get to that, I realize tomorrow is Texan Tuesday. However,
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: it was on this day, some 55 years ago, that
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: the American League voted 10-2 to approve the relocation of
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: the Washington Senators franchise to Arlington, Texas, officially paving the
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: way for the birth of the Texas Rangers. So that
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: happened 55 years ago today. And now, here we are
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: 55 years later, and the Texas Rangers, with six games
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: to go, one week left in the regular season, have
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: a one-game lead on the Houston Astros in the American
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: League West. The Rangers are 78 wins and 78 losses.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: They're at level 500. Houston, a game below, is one
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: game back. I maintain what I said a month ago.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: There's a very real chance that the winner of the
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: American League West could have a sub-500 record.
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: We're right there. It's going to be just as close
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: as the race to the top of the AL West
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: is the race to see whether your prediction comes true.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: Now, I do think the odds are in favor of
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: the team winning the West finishing above 500, if only
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: because of the finishing schedules of both. The Rangers have
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: three games with the Mets starting tomorrow at home in Arlington,
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: and then they close in Minneapolis against the Twins, who
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: have fallen off now and have been eliminated from the picture.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: Houston.
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: has three games in Seattle with the Mariners, and then
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: they finish in Sacramento against the Athletics. So probably the
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: team that wins the West is probably going to be
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: above 500, simply because of finishing schedules. But it's certainly
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: a distinct possibility it could be sub-500 off of that.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: We'll continue to follow that to see how. And by
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: the way, the same can be said for the wildcard picture.
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: The team that gets the third wildcard spot could be sub-500,
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: but I think there's enough contenders there that somebody will
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: be able to nudge past them. Included in that group
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: are the Rangers and the Astros. And right now, in
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: the wildcard standings, the third wildcard spot will go to
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: the White Sox right now, who are trailing the Guardians,
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: who have passed them in the central standings. But they're
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: only one game back of Cleveland's in the American League Central,
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: so they still have a chance to win the division.
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: And incidentally, if you think about this, the winner of
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: that Central division, simply because there's only six games left,
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: is probably going to get a bye. They're probably, here
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: are the Dodgers and Braves fighting tooth and nail to
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: see who gets that second bye behind the Brewers. The
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: Dodgers' magic number for getting that second bye is two.
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: They're probably going to do it. They have the Padres
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: at home who are fighting to get that last bye
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: Not even the last wild card. They could wind up
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: as the fourth seed the way they've been going. And
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: then they finish at San Francisco.
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: LA does.
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: So they have a decent chance of that.
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: Well, the end of the season is shaping up exactly
- 1:33:05Speaker 3: like most of the regular season did. Everybody in the
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: National League wild card race is stacking wins. And everybody
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: on the American League side is struggling.
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they're going backwards a little bit. So we'll see
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: how this ultimately winds up when it's done.
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: Okay, back to.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: to uh the texans and where they are and amico
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: ryan's talked about the lack of explosive plays they had
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: their game and uh jaylen noel snap count in it.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: With our receivers everybody has we have different packages of
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: different guys with different play calls they're in you know
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: how those snap counts kind of come about it depends
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: on how the game is going how the game is
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: flowing no one wants to see jay jay noel make
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: it more explosive plays than all of us so just
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: got to find a way to keep moving it around
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: and find a way to make plays offensively, no matter
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: who it is, is getting the football.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: You know, the former Cowboy, Dalton Schultz, is off to
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: a good start. He had a big day yesterday, but
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: is it frustrating not to get the wide receiving core
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: more involved?
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: The only frustrating part is we had multiple opportunities to
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: make plays. The ball was up. We pushed the ball downfield.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: We had opportunities. We didn't capitalize on those opportunities. So Still,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I'm proud of how CJ distributed the ball, but whoever
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: is out there, it's your job to come down with
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: the ball.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: Are there fixes for an offensive line that really had
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: struggles yesterday?
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we knew going into this game, that was my
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: message all week, we would have to outwork this front.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: Their front does a great job of playing with motor, right?
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: They do a great job of finishing, and it showed today.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: And we did not outwork them up front, therefore... We
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: have the performance that we have. So if we want
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: to play better, we want to have better performance, better outing.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: We got to play better up front.
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: And obviously it was a difficult day for the special teams.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: Not great. Not great. Not good enough. It wasn't winning
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: football from a special teams perspective.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: So why has the overall performance not met the standard
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: that Ryan's and his coaching staff have set out for
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: the team?
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: It comes down to this. I think this game is
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: very indicative of what NFL football is about, right? Jamar Chase,
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: one of their best players, he showed up. He made
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: a heck of a catch, scrambled drill, made another play, right,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: to get them in the end zone two times. Their de-tackle,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Dexter Lawrence, was effective all day in the backfield, disrupting,
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: making plays, right? And that's where we got to check
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: ourselves and see who, if you're, Call yourself a playmaker.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: Where are your plays? Are you making those plays to
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: put the Texans in position to win football games? That's
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: what it will come down to. Our guys, they play
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: it the right way, but, hey, you got to execute.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: You got to find a way. How do we get
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: in the end zone? We want to win any game here,
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: we got to get in the end zone. We got
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: to score points. So we got to find a way
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: to fix this. Our coaches and players, we're all in
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: this together. We got to make sure we're putting everybody
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: in position to succeed.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: Okay, and as they continue to try to fight through this,
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: you mentioned about the special teams not good. How much
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: of an overall impact did they have on the defeat?
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: For us, field position, we were kind of uphill battle.
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: They started, their offense was able to start at midfield
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: more than we would like them to. We want teams
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: to try to drive the field on us, right? And
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: they had the opportunity with a really good offense to
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: work from midfield, which is difficult to... continue to defend
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: such a great offense when they're working at midfield. So
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: we've got to do a better job right there of
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: winning the field position battle every time we go out
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: there with our special teams. We've got to return it better.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: We've got to eliminate the silly penalties. And we've got
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: to be able to make our kicks.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: He was also asked to evaluate the defensive line performance,
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: that and that of Will Anderson.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: Starting with Will, I thought Will did an outstanding job.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: And all those guys just collectively... They got after the quarterback,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: got some good pressure on him. That's what we're used
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: to seeing from our defensive front. They did a good
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: job of bouncing back, applying pressure on the quarterback. And,
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: you know, he still made a few plays on us.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: So I'd like to have a couple of those plays back,
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: a couple of the explosive plays that we allowed touchdowns on.
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: I'd like to have those plays back, find a way
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: to make them. But proud of the effort, proud of
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: the fight that those guys showed. And for us defensively,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: got to find a way to take the ball away.
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: It's our second week in a row we have not
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: taken the football away. So for us to help the
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: team defensively win the football game, we've got to find
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: a way to get more turnovers.
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: And a couple more on the offense, just trying to
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: see how they can get it turned back around. As
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: far as C.J. Stroud's performance win yesterday?
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: C.J.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: Played very decisive. He went to the proper read multiple times.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: He was able to take some good shots downfield. We
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: touched it a couple times, just couldn't come down with it.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: So I'm proud of the decision-making he made today. He
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: had to get out of the pocket, escape, and run
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: a couple times to get us a couple positive plays. Also,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: he had some throwaways that were positive plays. So the
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: decision-making was there. It was just crunch time. We got
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: to find a way to finish.
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: And then finally, how will the offense reassess everything and
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: then improve?
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: For the improvement, it'll always start with offensive football. For me,
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: it always starts up front. You play well up front,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: you have a chance. We ran the ball well last
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: week because our O-line played well, we protected well, but
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: to give up four sacks in the fourth quarter, when
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: we needed it most, it's crunch time. We got to
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: step up. We got to protect. We got to do
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: a much better job protecting the quarterback in those instances
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: when we know we got to throw the football and
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: make some plays.
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: I would imagine we're probably going to hear more from
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: both head coaches this week as they get ready for
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: their next round. It might be a little more critical
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: for the Texans and the Cowboys simply because they have
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: yet to win a ballgame, and they've got to be
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: able to find a way to win a game. So
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: we'll hear from him and from Brian Schottenheimer as.
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: Well coming out during the course of the week.
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: program on 13 Under the Zone.
