Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The government's decided to move forward with us FED Digital
- 0:02Speaker 1: News Marketing Bill. Basically, you get the big tech players
- 0:04Speaker 1: to the table category or with local media around usage
- 0:07Speaker 1: of content to be count the arbitrator steps in. Our
- 0:09Speaker 1: media commentator spin off founder Duncan greeves with us Duncan,
- 0:12Speaker 1: very good morning to you.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Money might as soon.
- 0:14Speaker 1: As I can tell, there are two issues one whether
- 0:16Speaker 1: or there is an issue, and I think we all
- 0:17Speaker 1: agree there is two. Whether this fix is at what's
- 0:19Speaker 1: your view?
- 0:21Speaker 2: I think that there is a decent shot that this
- 0:24Speaker 2: will bring material change that the big question mark is,
- 0:28Speaker 2: you know, with this, with Goldsmith now having the power
- 0:32Speaker 2: to designate, whether the big tech platforms will go along
- 0:35Speaker 2: with it or as Meta has done another markets like Canada,
- 0:39Speaker 2: will was this that everything it has?
- 0:41Speaker 1: Do you think part of the problem is Goldsmith looks
- 0:43Speaker 1: like he's been dragged here reluctantly.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Well, I think that this is where the change from
- 0:48Speaker 2: Melissa Lee, who was very publicly empty the bill does
- 0:53Speaker 2: have a favor. Goldsmith has been on a bit of
- 0:55Speaker 2: a listening tour with media and you know, certainly at
- 0:58Speaker 2: the press conference yesterday made it pretty good best of
- 1:00Speaker 2: suggesting that this is something he's thought deeply about and
- 1:03Speaker 2: come to all his ownvolition. Whether that's true or not,
- 1:06Speaker 2: is it a separate matter.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Okay, So Canada and Australia, are they shining examples of
- 1:11Speaker 1: how brilliant this can be or are they a bit
- 1:13Speaker 1: half baked?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Well, Australia was the poster boy and had you know,
- 1:20Speaker 2: I think it was about two hundred million Australian dollars
- 1:22Speaker 2: a year that had gone into journalism that wouldn't have
- 1:24Speaker 2: had the wives gone. Google has no what are is
- 1:29Speaker 2: continuing with it? The meta has signal so that it
- 1:31Speaker 2: woke when you it's ones and that now there is
- 1:34Speaker 2: a real battle in Australia about whether news will continue
- 1:38Speaker 2: to be distributed through platforms like Facebook and Meta. So
- 1:43Speaker 2: there is a bit of a change from the consumer side,
- 1:46Speaker 2: but from a revenue perspective, the the you know, there
- 1:50Speaker 2: is there's money flying that wasn't previously flying and there
- 1:53Speaker 2: are still moves that government could make. I think that
- 1:57Speaker 2: that mean that that story isn't finished being told.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Okay, do you take their threat seriously? Will turn off
- 2:02Speaker 1: the news or not?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Well, they've done it in Canada, so I think you
- 2:06Speaker 2: have to take them seriously, it's about how material that
- 2:09Speaker 2: is for your country. You know. I think that we're
- 2:14Speaker 2: Facebook to turn off news and I think the government
- 2:17Speaker 2: could quite rightly say, well, your platform is now at
- 2:20Speaker 2: information free zone, will turn off advertising. That hasn't been
- 2:23Speaker 2: done in other countries. But government's the biggest client of
- 2:27Speaker 2: these companies and hasn't to this point used that. Sickly
- 2:30Speaker 2: asked old Smith yesterday whether he would, and he didn't.
- 2:33Speaker 2: But I think that there are still moves to be made.
- 2:35Speaker 2: This is still very early.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I think good Good Insight don't appreciate it as almost
- 2:39Speaker 1: Dunk and Greaves spinoff founder and the media commentator.
