- 0:16Hello, everyone, and welcome to the After Ever
- 0:19After podcast, the show where we take a look
- 0:21at Disney sequels to truly see what life is like
- 0:24after ever after. My name is Andy and I'm joined
- 0:27by James. Hi. Hello. This is our first ever episode,
- 0:31so I think we could lay some groundwork. We're
- 0:33going to go through all of the Disney classics
- 0:36from Snow White to Zootopia 2, I guess. And we're
- 0:40going to go through each one, look at the sequels
- 0:43and see which ones are worthy. of the legacy
- 0:45set up by the iconic originals yes we are i think
- 0:49it could be good to uh set the stage a bit here
- 0:51what's your kind of relationship with uh like
- 0:56like did you watch a lot of these growing up
- 0:58or is it like so when i was a kid um i watched
- 1:03loads of the disney classics i'm trying to think
- 1:08of which ones that i didn't watch i don't think
- 1:10i watched like rescuers yeah Give me some others
- 1:15and I'll tell you whether I've watched them or
- 1:18not. Without giving away our age too much, I
- 1:20reckon we would have deemed shit hot on Lion
- 1:24King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:28Had all of those on VHS showing my age there.
- 1:32But yeah, I watched a fair few. I think one of
- 1:37the ones that I hadn't watched until a lot more
- 1:39recently was Beauty and the Beast. But yeah,
- 1:42in terms of... disney sequels um until today
- 1:48i have never ever seen a disney sequel even some
- 1:54of the newer ones so like frozen 2 never seen
- 1:56it moana 2 never seen it wrecking ralph 2 never
- 2:00seen it there's a lot of the well i mean i've
- 2:04seen one now yeah as of for this yeah for this
- 2:09yeah mine's not like i'm not like like it's not
- 2:13like you've never seen any and i've seen them
- 2:14all or anything like i've seen like my fair share
- 2:16like i've seen like the aladdins and the uh the
- 2:21lion king and stuff like that um but it was just
- 2:23like as and when um so i've got like some experience
- 2:28with it for sure um but i think it's fair to
- 2:31say because like we both are like disney fans
- 2:35right but like we're not like disney adults like
- 2:38we're not obsessed with it we don't go to disneyland
- 2:41or anything like that like so it's kind of weird
- 2:43that of all the people in the world the two of
- 2:46us would maybe decide to make this podcast but
- 2:49i think we're both just kind of fascinated with
- 2:51like how strange these sequels are and the weird
- 2:55way they come out and they always seem to have
- 2:56like these i don't know just strange origins
- 2:59and stuff yeah i i like the thing for me and
- 3:03i remember thinking this when i was younger when
- 3:05i would see some of these sequels like in blockbuster
- 3:09or whatever um i'd be like i don't remember this
- 3:15coming out in the cinema i don't remember anything
- 3:17about this yeah this can't be a real film like
- 3:20i thought they were like bootlegs or something
- 3:23so i think that's why i avoided them for so long
- 3:26because i was just like this isn't going to be
- 3:29as good as the original no because i love the
- 3:32original and i'm not going to tarnish that by
- 3:34watching what to me looked like a a bootleg sequel
- 3:39oh yeah um yeah so like i remember like i love
- 3:45one of my favorite disney films is um emperor's
- 3:49new groove yeah i remember seeing cronk's new
- 3:51groove come out right dvd or vhs or whatever
- 3:56it was on and i was just like no no this is not
- 4:03real how is this how is this a thing why would
- 4:06they do this yeah so there's certain ones that
- 4:10i'm excited for i am excited to see kong's new
- 4:12groove but um yeah they did very fast get that
- 4:17reputation though like because so many of them
- 4:19like and we're gonna go through like so like
- 4:21you've mentioned some theatrical ones and everything
- 4:23like they've got they're quite varied but like
- 4:25So many of them were that reputation of, like,
- 4:28this is straight -to -DVD sloth to get in on
- 4:30the name. And some of them are good, but, like,
- 4:32some of them are, like... There's a reputation
- 4:35for a reason, isn't there? Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:38There's even that... I don't know if you've seen
- 4:41it, the Family Guy bit. Jafar... Aladdin 4, Jafar
- 4:44gets his glasses. Jafar gets his glasses, or
- 4:46something like that, yeah. It's so, like... it's
- 4:50got such a reputation that even like that's touching
- 4:52on it so yeah i'm excited to um i'm excited to
- 4:55go on this journey with you to be honest um i
- 4:58wouldn't have any anyone else to go on this journey
- 5:01with no well we um so the way we're going to
- 5:06be doing this is um rather than going through
- 5:08order of sequels we're going to go through the
- 5:10list of disney classics like we mentioned earlier
- 5:12from snow white the very first all the way down
- 5:15which ones got a sequel, and then we talk about
- 5:17it that way. So chronological order of the originals.
- 5:20And as we travel through it, I thought it would
- 5:22be fun to maybe look back on the ones we're passing
- 5:25by. So in this case, the first and second films
- 5:27were Snow White and Pinocchio, and then we're
- 5:30touching on Fantasia, which is the third film
- 5:32that got a sequel. But I thought it could be
- 5:34fun to look back on those other ones and just
- 5:36take a look at how they did continue in this
- 5:38little section, which I've actually created a
- 5:40name for, James, and I haven't told you. I'm
- 5:42doing this on air. Live. I'm so confident in
- 5:48this name that I hit it. This section is going
- 5:52to be called Before Ever Before. It's such a
- 6:00terrible name. No! Before Once Upon a Time. That
- 6:05makes more sense. Well, no. You've said it now.
- 6:09It's in stone. Before Ever Before. Yeah, it's
- 6:14in stone now. That's what it's called. So, would
- 6:19you like to take a look before ever before? I
- 6:22would love to. I would love to do that with you.
- 6:26So, if we before ever... Wait. Before ever before.
- 6:32I don't know. The first one released was Snow
- 6:37White. That's never had a sequel. It's always
- 6:39had a live action film, which didn't do so well.
- 6:43but would you be surprised if i told you there
- 6:46was meant to be a sequel to snow white um what
- 6:51year was it supposed to come out because that
- 6:53you know will determine my level of surprise
- 6:57fairly recent well yeah no not surprised at all
- 7:02right so um this was part of the uh the ones
- 7:06we've mentioned like the director dvd ones these
- 7:08were getting uh so many brought out and they
- 7:12were working on one which was apparently meant
- 7:15to be computer animated and it was called just
- 7:17the seven dwarves um okay so apparently this
- 7:21is going to be about how the dwarves met and
- 7:22how the evil queen killed like snow white's dad
- 7:25and all this stuff um but apparently according
- 7:28to the director who's on board mike deezer he
- 7:33said that apparently the plot was changed to
- 7:36center around how Dopey lost his voice because
- 7:40he witnessed his mother die. What? It's like
- 7:45Bumblebee, but with more trauma and the seven
- 7:50dwarves. Oh my god. So this was one of Dopey
- 7:56with fucking Vietnam flashbacks of his mum dying.
- 8:01And I thought they were brothers. I always thought
- 8:04they were a family, but apparently... Apparently,
- 8:07yeah, he's got a different mother. Oh, wow. Jesus.
- 8:12But this is going to come up quite a few times.
- 8:15What? Mum's dying? Well, it is Disney. Well,
- 8:20yeah, true, actually. But with a lot of these,
- 8:25they get cancelled in 2006 when John Lasseter
- 8:28becomes, like, the... the CCO. He cans all of
- 8:34these things that's in development. He just doesn't
- 8:36think they're worth doing. So a lot of these
- 8:37just met... Oh my god, I was going to say they
- 8:40met a sticky date with John Lasseter, but that's
- 8:41probably not something I should say. They met
- 8:44the guillotine of John Lasseter. They killed
- 8:48them all. Met their end like Dopey's mum. and
- 8:54there's been some other ways that continued it
- 8:56had a video game on the game boy you had a mobile
- 8:59game apparently it had a um a comic book as well
- 9:03yeah comic strip yes that was um that was italian
- 9:07that was like in the in the 30s for some reason
- 9:09they did a sequel wow i have no idea what that's
- 9:12about i couldn't find anything about the story
- 9:14to that oh hang on no there's two There's one
- 9:19for Silly Symphony Sunday. It ran a four month
- 9:23long adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
- 9:26So I guess that's an adaptation rather than a
- 9:29sequel. But yeah, you're right. There's literally
- 9:33one thing about the Italian version from 1939
- 9:40and that's it. I couldn't find anything on that.
- 9:43And there's another thing as well. This feels
- 9:46very tenuous. But it's something called the 7D,
- 9:50which is the Seven Dwarfs. But it feels very
- 9:53tenuous. I don't think we can count this as a
- 9:55continuation because it's basically a full new
- 9:58interpretation of the Seven Dwarfs in the style
- 10:00of modern animation stuff like Phineas and Ferb
- 10:04and that kind of zany. it it's not it's i wouldn't
- 10:08count it really they've taken the idea of the
- 10:10seven dwarfs but the 7d i've never even heard
- 10:13of that no i think it was super short -lived
- 10:16and it doesn't look very to be honest before
- 10:19i jump on a pinocchio quickly i will just say
- 10:21obviously with these is going to be i think almost
- 10:23every single one we go through will have had
- 10:25an appearance in something like kingdom hearts
- 10:27uh disney magic kingdom uh the dreamlight valley
- 10:32one these video games where it's like a lot the
- 10:35idea is basically like a crossover like disney
- 10:39infinity and yeah i was gonna say disney infinity
- 10:42came to mind but um yeah you're totally right
- 10:45and if anyone doesn't know what kingdom hearts
- 10:47is uh don't worry about it it's final fantasy
- 10:51and disney characters that's all you need to
- 10:53know it's very confusing yeah there's like a
- 10:56million different um games for it um Let us know
- 11:02if you want us to play them. I'm not going to
- 11:04do that. I don't want to do it. So with Pinocchio,
- 11:09that also had an ill -fated sequel cancelled
- 11:12by Lasseter, which was Pinocchio 2. This just
- 11:15sounds a lot... It's not as interesting as Dopey
- 11:17having trauma. It's just Pinocchio goes on a
- 11:20strange journey. Any questions why life's unfair?
- 11:24Sorry, Pinocchio, but it just fucking is sometimes.
- 11:27It just is. As he realized because his sequel
- 11:33got cancelled. Exactly. Life isn't fair. You're
- 11:37not getting Pinocchio 2. John Lasseter's coming
- 11:39with his guillotine again. He's chopping off
- 11:44your strings, sunshine. But one thing that we
- 11:48also found out about while we were looking this
- 11:54up is it got a Is that right? A live -action
- 11:58prequel? It's kind of like Pinocchio again, but
- 12:02from Geppetto's perspective. It's just called
- 12:05Geppetto. It was straight to TV. There's people
- 12:08who say that it was meant to be the reunion of
- 12:12Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins
- 12:14back. Again, I couldn't find much on that, but
- 12:17it's basically a full musical that was done for
- 12:21TV, telling the story of Pinocchio, but just
- 12:23from Geppetto's perspective. insane it still
- 12:27baffles me we found this out like a month ago
- 12:30something like that and we were talking about
- 12:32it and it just it still just blows my mind also
- 12:36the cast is pretty good drew carey's geppetto
- 12:40that's great yeah anton anton yelchin was in
- 12:44it yeah rest in peace oh bless up big man was
- 12:49it usher in it yes usher is the pleasure island
- 12:52ring leader that's mad What a cast for something
- 12:57that no one knows about. Yeah, wild. Of all the
- 13:01ones we've mentioned so far, this is the one
- 13:03I'd love to circle back one day and have a look
- 13:05at this. 100%. So if you do want us to cover
- 13:10that, let us know because we'd be well up for
- 13:13that. Yeah, it'd be easier to understand in Kingdom
- 13:15Hearts as well by a long shot. 100%. 100%. So
- 13:20obviously this got, as with... Snow White, this
- 13:25got a live -action remake. I hated it. I'm not
- 13:30a fan. I'm looking through. Again, it says...
- 13:34Oh, you know what? I think I watched that live
- 13:36-action remake on the day the Queen died. I'm
- 13:39not saying it had anything to do with it, but
- 13:40what a day. What a day. What a dark day. A heavy
- 13:47toll for all of us. Oh, dear. Other than the
- 13:54cancelled sequel, Geppetto, 2022 remake, it also
- 14:00had an adaptation in Silly Symphony Sunday. Again,
- 14:06Kingdom Hearts, all of that. I think with Pinocchio
- 14:11specifically as well, they took Jiminy Cricket
- 14:14and he kind of became one of Disney's mascots,
- 14:16so he himself is probing so much. It's very true,
- 14:20yeah. And Pinocchio, whether it was the original
- 14:24story, I've got to get this in, also inspired
- 14:28and is the basis of Lies of Pi, which is a Soulsborne
- 14:34game that I've started playing and it's pretty
- 14:36good. So there you go. Just wanted to shove that
- 14:39in there for my endless love of Soulsborne games.
- 14:42How does that, like, is it the same story? Don't
- 14:45ask. It's fine. We'll talk about it after the
- 14:48podcast. No one needs to know this. Fair enough.
- 14:53So, with Snow White and Pinocchio, I guess that
- 14:55takes us up to Fantasia. Just quickly before
- 14:58we dive in, because we would like to discuss
- 15:00the original film quickly, just to give you a
- 15:02baseline of where we both lie with that, so you
- 15:05know our perspectives going into the sequel.
- 15:07Just before I do that, quickly, I will let you
- 15:09know the other ways Fantasia has continued. It's
- 15:11weirdly mostly video games. It had a... So Sorcerer's
- 15:15Apprentice game for the Atari in 83. There was
- 15:18a specific Fantasia game for the Sega in 91,
- 15:21which is just collect musical notes. And then
- 15:24there was a Fantasia music evolved game for the
- 15:26Kinect in 2014. And this was, it was by Harmonix
- 15:31who did like Rock Band and they originally did
- 15:33Guitar Hero. It's just a dancing game. It's got
- 15:36the Fantasia name on for whatever reason. And
- 15:38you're dancing to stuff like Ed Sheeran and Imagine
- 15:40Dragons. It's not like you're dancing to Beethoven.
- 15:43So it's whatever. That seems really pointless.
- 15:48It does, doesn't it? Because I don't know who's...
- 15:49The whole thing about Fantasia is the music and
- 15:54obviously the animation and everything as well.
- 15:56But you would think that you would be dancing
- 15:59to like Night on Bald Mountain or Sorcerer's
- 16:03Apprentice and all of that. why not yeah it's
- 16:06a weird angle to take name recognition but then
- 16:09have nothing that makes people like that but
- 16:12with the original fantasia is that something
- 16:14that you have watched like a lot have you ever
- 16:17seen it or yeah so i've seen it you know i didn't
- 16:19re -watch it for the podcast which is my bad
- 16:21um but i kind of just wanted to go into the sequels
- 16:25a little bit blind yeah there's certain ones
- 16:27that i will be re -watching if i really don't
- 16:30remember them or if i haven't watched them before
- 16:32i remember most of it quite well i was looking
- 16:36through like a plot synopsis and i remembered
- 16:39some of the bigger parts, Sorcerer's Apprentice,
- 16:43and I just mentioned what it was. Night on Bald
- 16:49Mountain, I remember really, really well. And
- 16:52yeah, I think it's a really interesting film.
- 16:56Being so music -centric and pairing that music
- 17:01with the animation, it's weird and it's interesting.
- 17:05And yeah, I like it. It's not my go -to. It's
- 17:10not something that I would watch again and again
- 17:12and again. But it's good to have on in the background,
- 17:16and some of the scenes are great. So, yeah. What
- 17:20about you? What's your history with Fantasia?
- 17:24Well, I thought I'd seen it, and then I did rewatch
- 17:27it for the podcast, and I slowly realised, I
- 17:29don't think I have seen this, because I didn't
- 17:31recognise anything other than sources of pride.
- 17:33No way! If you don't know what Fantasia is, which
- 17:36I imagine you do, but it's basically like a concert
- 17:39film where it's like an orchestra playing classical
- 17:41music, but each piece is accompanied by an animated
- 17:45piece that's like meant to be inspired by the
- 17:47music. And they said there's three different
- 17:48types. It's like just abstract stuff where it's
- 17:50just visuals to go through music or there's like
- 17:53a sense of a story or like an actual full story.
- 17:55And it's just different little shorts. And so
- 17:59you can like what you like. I'd seen The Sorcerer's
- 18:02Apprentice, which I think everyone will know.
- 18:03It's like Mickey and the Icon. Yeah. wizard hat
- 18:05um like isolated it turned out and i assumed
- 18:09i'd seen it all but i hadn't yeah when i was
- 18:12looking into it though um like i have a lot of
- 18:14respect for this film because like we're what
- 18:16three films in a disney's catalog and they're
- 18:18doing like this weird art house kind of movie
- 18:20like experimental and like nothing they've ever
- 18:23done a really weird really weird like left turn
- 18:27for them yeah to do two very story focused fairy
- 18:31tales and then to just be like all right, you're
- 18:34getting a banging orchestra and some really unbelievable
- 18:37animation. Yeah. And so I didn't know this until
- 18:41I was researching it for this. And I don't know
- 18:43how familiar you are, but because of the way
- 18:46that like audio recording was back in the day,
- 18:48like Disney wanted to be like, you are actually
- 18:50in an opera house or a theater or whatever, listening
- 18:52to the orchestra. So they kind of pioneered a
- 18:56new sound system for this. So it was actually
- 18:58recorded with multiple audio channels. So this
- 19:00is actually. A huge step forward for audio and
- 19:03film as well. Yeah. Was it something like Fantasia
- 19:07Vision or something? Or am I thinking of Fantasia
- 19:102000? No, yeah. They called it Fantasound or
- 19:13something. Fantasound, that's the one. That's
- 19:16kind of mental. Isn't it? They basically premiered
- 19:19Atmos. Yeah. They beat Dolby to the punch. And
- 19:24from what I can tell, like... i think disney
- 19:27really liked this idea and like it didn't do
- 19:29well at the box office but uh i think it's like
- 19:32good to mention now because it does play in a
- 19:34fantasia 2000 but the idea was 100 yeah he really
- 19:38wanted this to be it goes on forever and shorts
- 19:41come out and they get added in and it's like
- 19:43an ongoing thing which is like always like a
- 19:44work in progress like oh let's go check out the
- 19:47fantasia i hear they've got sorcerer's apprentice
- 19:49back on or something like that and you turn up
- 19:51and they've got like some new ones they've got
- 19:52some old ones and It obviously didn't work out
- 19:55because the box office just wasn't there to justify
- 19:57this to be in the cinema forever. Absolutely.
- 20:00It's an interesting idea. It's such an interesting...
- 20:04When they said that at the start of... So, slight
- 20:08spoiler for when we go into Fantasia 2000, but
- 20:11they do mention that. Yeah. And it's so weird.
- 20:15Like, that is such a good... Like, it's such
- 20:19an interesting idea to basically... I mean, he's
- 20:22taken inspiration from theaters and stuff. They
- 20:24go all around the country. Obviously, they don't
- 20:27change what's going to be shown in that specific
- 20:31production, but the people will change. So you
- 20:36might see an actor that you like, and you're
- 20:38like, oh, I like them in that. I'll go to that.
- 20:40So it's weird that Disney was trying to kind
- 20:42of do that, but with a film, question mark? Yeah.
- 20:47Would they have re -edited it? I guess they must
- 20:51have. Yeah, I think the idea was just the individual
- 20:55sections you could slot out, slot back in. I
- 20:58haven't picked up yet on whether or not he planned
- 21:00this to be theatrical or if it was going to be
- 21:03a Disneyland thing. Because I know this did start
- 21:07with... It did actually start with Sorcerer's
- 21:09Apprentice and then they got really excited about
- 21:11that and it built out and out and out. But it's
- 21:13a very ambitious idea and it doesn't surprise
- 21:17me that it never happened. um but it's it's it's
- 21:21fun like it's very fun there's a bit with uh
- 21:24i think it's his granddaughter on on the blu
- 21:26-ray i was watching when she's on about like
- 21:28this huge red book he had called future fantasies
- 21:31and there's all these different ideas like what
- 21:33about this and this and uh he clearly way it
- 21:36seemed like it was probably like a passion project
- 21:38for him wow That's really cool, and it'd be interesting
- 21:42to see if they eventually, I mean, in a thousand
- 21:46years, if they do Fantasia 3000. Who knows? Yeah.
- 21:51We're long gone. Yeah. No, we'll be there. We'll
- 21:55be there. We'll be frozen. I did like it. I think
- 21:58it's long. The original one is so long. It's
- 22:01over two hours. It's very long. It's the only
- 22:05Disney film, apparently, to ever have an intermission.
- 22:08that that's that sounds weird because they've
- 22:10have had longer films since then but at the time
- 22:13that wasn't like super common um i guess and
- 22:16i think like some of the pieces are good some
- 22:18of it's very hit and miss but like as a whole
- 22:20i really enjoy it and it's very um i think i
- 22:23respect it more than enjoy it necessarily but
- 22:26that's not a dig because i still do enjoy it
- 22:27a lot you know but um yeah yeah all right let's
- 22:30should we jump into 2000 then i think so so yeah
- 22:34as as we've been talking about today's film is
- 22:38fantasia 2000 let's let's get into it yeah um
- 22:42firstly i didn't really know what to expect with
- 22:45this so i was quite pleasantly surprised this
- 22:49was this was lovely also an hour and 17 minutes
- 22:52so brisk so much brisker than the other one rapid
- 22:56from what i remember the last time i watched
- 23:00fantasia um the first one um yeah it was a pleasant
- 23:05surprise because i thought i was going to be
- 23:07sat here for three hours watching this and i'm
- 23:10very glad that i wasn't yeah what did you think
- 23:12well i i kind of came off this i watched like
- 23:15it's tuesday when we're recording this i watched
- 23:18fantasia one on sunday two on monday so i kind
- 23:21of came in like okay i know what to expect here
- 23:23i think overall before that like we'll probably
- 23:26do a deep dive on each segment overall I might
- 23:29actually like this more than the first one. I
- 23:30think the hit rate's better. I think the shorter
- 23:33runtime really helps. I think the first one has
- 23:36a nicer kind of setup. Like, it feels like you're
- 23:38in a theater seat and there's an actual conductor
- 23:40in front. And this one kind of felt a little
- 23:43bit blue -screeny and it's introduced by celebrities
- 23:47and celebrities are fucking great, I guess. But,
- 23:50like, I find it more interesting hearing, like,
- 23:52a symphony conductor discuss the music than I
- 23:55do, like, Stephen Martin doing, like, a little
- 23:56bit that wasn't really funny. other than the
- 23:58presentation though i didn't really have like
- 24:00any complaints again some of them are hit and
- 24:02miss but uh i do prefer the presentation of the
- 24:05original one but at the same time i know like
- 24:07this was made 60 years later and it's nice to
- 24:10tell people like we got steve martin and angela
- 24:12lansbury on screen you better come see this yeah
- 24:14absolutely i think um one of the things that
- 24:19i kind of took from this was that they were trying
- 24:21some new technology things so when that you know
- 24:29when that hall opens up and you see those weird
- 24:32looking screens playing Fantasia and stuff on
- 24:34I was like oh okay they're trying something interesting
- 24:37here and it must have been like they've just
- 24:41discovered or they've just kind of perfected
- 24:44how to do this and that kind of got amplified
- 24:46in the second one when they started we'll go
- 24:50into the second one properly like in a bit but
- 24:54yeah i was like oh this is interesting that they've
- 24:58done this certain thing but yeah um presentation
- 25:01wise i i agree i think that it did seem very
- 25:04blue screeny i really liked when it was the composers
- 25:10and the musicians talking about it and talking
- 25:13about how the music kind of made the director
- 25:17feel and that's why it it plays out on screen
- 25:21like that and why they you know decided to use
- 25:24this and this and this yeah i thought it was
- 25:27really interesting and i totally agree what a
- 25:31what a great runtime and yeah uh the the uh one
- 25:36thing that i've noted down was that the disney
- 25:40intro for this that uh snaps into like a space
- 25:45nebula or something like that in the background
- 25:47was cool as hell yeah that was sick that was
- 25:51i really set you up for like yeah it was so quick
- 25:55as well because it was just like the start of
- 25:57the disney thing and then it snaps and then it's
- 26:00in space and it's like what is going on and then
- 26:03you get that lovely little recap of the first
- 26:06one as well like some of those scenes fly past
- 26:09and it's like okay this is this is pretty cool
- 26:12this is gonna be this is gonna be a fun time
- 26:15i think yeah even the name sounds i know it's
- 26:18just the year it came out but the name sounds
- 26:20like fantasia 2000 it sounds like very punchy
- 26:23yeah absolutely if i'd seen this like when i
- 26:28was younger because i i mean this is the man
- 26:30that a child when i was a child um that bought
- 26:35the millennium slicer which was the old bionicle
- 26:39thing because it sounded cool you know what i
- 26:42mean yeah like it's what is that it's basically
- 26:46slicer that came out on the millennium cool that
- 26:51is pretty sick it is pretty cool Should we get
- 26:56into the first one? Or have you got more to say?
- 26:59No, I was going to say, this one, like the original
- 27:02one, they both have, and I kind of respect them
- 27:05for doing this, they both start with the abstract.
- 27:07I kind of respect them. I have that kind of trust
- 27:10in the audience to be patient for little kids
- 27:12who might not care for that. But they both start
- 27:15with, this is just some music, and here's some
- 27:18images that's very abstract that the animators
- 27:21felt when they listened to it. Yeah. It's really
- 27:25nice to see. I can't really describe it. It's
- 27:28very visual rather than... I can't really describe
- 27:30it at all. I don't know if you could do a better
- 27:32job. I mean, it just... It's so weird. I wrote
- 27:38the best music video ever, question mark. And
- 27:41then animation is fucking gorgeous. Because it
- 27:45is. It's absolutely stunning. And combining...
- 27:50Cannot remember what the song is. I didn't write
- 27:52it down. Symphony number five, is it? Beethoven.
- 27:55Yeah. Combining such a... You know, the start
- 28:00of that is... And it's so big and bombastic and
- 28:06huge. Remind me, the start doesn't have the butterflies.
- 28:11It's the... like flashes of light from the clouds
- 28:15isn't it yeah like literal flashes of color and
- 28:18light and just yeah it's so interesting and it's
- 28:22so bombastic and cool and it's like ah i guess
- 28:27god from above is is like ah here we go we're
- 28:32starting and it's kind of like a creation story
- 28:34i guess Yeah, the animation on those butterflies
- 28:45is just absolutely stunning. It's so smooth,
- 28:49it's so fluid. There's some lovely little parts,
- 28:52and this is throughout the whole thing, apart
- 28:56from one where the music is just so perfectly
- 29:00tuned to the animation. And there's certain little
- 29:04flourishes that they do where it's like the little
- 29:07butterfly nudges the mum butterfly and it's like...
- 29:10and it kind of does it at the same time as the
- 29:14music it's just so well edited and so well animated
- 29:17like you say it's just so experimental this one
- 29:20very abstract very weird uh god comes and saves
- 29:25the day no it was steve martin because he walks
- 29:29out right after that yeah it was a good one it
- 29:33wasn't my favorite by any means but it was very
- 29:36very beautiful it was fun it was fun yeah that's
- 29:39it It was fun. Steve Martin came out and did
- 29:42a couple of little jokes and they didn't necessarily
- 29:45land. No, I usually like him, but I didn't think
- 29:48he landed here at all. Yeah. For some reason,
- 29:51I've just written with no context. Oh, that's
- 29:54a cool idea. I don't know. I have no idea. The
- 30:00concept of Fantasia. Yeah. Oh, God. So the next
- 30:05one is Pines of Rome. which is a beautiful song.
- 30:12And this is the whales, right? This is the whales.
- 30:15Yeah. Tell me, what did you think? Man, don't
- 30:18come to me with this one. I don't know what it
- 30:20is about me. Like when I saw Avatar 2, it didn't
- 30:24hit for me at all. And a lot of it's just like,
- 30:26I don't give a shit about these fucking whales.
- 30:28And I had to say, I don't know what it is about
- 30:31me. I swear I don't hate whales. I don't want
- 30:33them to be hurt or anything, but like, ah, okay.
- 30:37Whales. And it is really nicely animated and
- 30:41it's kind of cute. What's the story really again?
- 30:44It's like a baby whale gets trapped and then
- 30:46he gets to fly with other whales in the sky or
- 30:48whatever. Cool. Good song, good animation. I
- 30:53don't really care about whales. I don't know
- 30:55why I feel broken. Andy Oates hates whales. Yeah.
- 31:02Do you know what? I think I agree. It was nice.
- 31:07I think it was really interesting and really
- 31:09not what I was expecting with the music again.
- 31:14And they kind of say that at the start. They
- 31:16say like, oh, you imagine like Romans and all
- 31:19of this, but there are animators took it a different
- 31:22way. And I was like, yeah, sure, whatever. What
- 31:24did they do? And yeah, they really did. That
- 31:27is a good point. They do that a bit, which keeps
- 31:30it interesting. It's never like the... are very
- 31:32rarely is it like the the quickest jump to like
- 31:35what would be animated for this so i do appreciate
- 31:37that like they they really go out and i would
- 31:41never thought of flying whales to go kinds of
- 31:44room i think it's just because it's a bit weird
- 31:46isn't it yeah and it is beautiful i guess like
- 31:49the little baby whale gets stuck and he wants
- 31:51his mommy and then he gets to fly yeah um you
- 31:54know what it is as well like speaking like taking
- 31:57away like my hatred of whatever hatred of underwater
- 32:01mammals it does a little bit in the middle i
- 32:05think it starts really beautiful and it ends
- 32:06beautiful but i think it goes a little bit long
- 32:09in the middle Agreed. And I think that's the
- 32:11thing when you're, you know, animating to classical
- 32:15music. Classical music is long. There's no question
- 32:19about it. There's a lot of downplay and upplay
- 32:22and all of this. Classical music ends up being
- 32:24long pieces. So there is going to be a lull when
- 32:27it comes to animation and stuff like that. But
- 32:29yeah, there were some things that I really liked.
- 32:31I'm just going to read those out. It continues
- 32:34Fantasia's absolutely sublime music into visual
- 32:37motif. I don't know if I'm using the word motif
- 32:40there correctly. Sounds good to me. The whale
- 32:45flapping to the beat is lovely. The horn, when
- 32:49that hits in the music, is the blowhole. Love
- 32:53it. It's so nice. And the cymbals, one thing
- 32:57that I've noticed quite a lot was when they splash,
- 32:59it's cymbals. And I think that's perfect. It
- 33:02gives that perfect... representation of a crashing
- 33:05wave i did forget about that to be fair that
- 33:08was there was some clever uses of the instruments
- 33:10and stuff to be fair i couldn't tell but if they
- 33:13did do this it was lovely the water drops in
- 33:16the cave as tiny piano notes i had a look the
- 33:21first ones did it and it was gorgeous and the
- 33:24second ones i don't think they did but when they
- 33:27did the teeny weeny little piano notes as the
- 33:30as the drops dropped gorgeous a question that
- 33:34i had for you and i don't think this is necessarily
- 33:37true was this one of their first 2d and 3d animation
- 33:41blends um i was gonna bring that up actually
- 33:44yeah because this is uh if i remember rightly
- 33:47it's tarzan tarzan where he's going through the
- 33:50vines and he's like kind of like grinding on
- 33:52them like a skater oh yeah i i think that's the
- 33:56first time they used that right but that was
- 33:5899 That was literally just last year. So they
- 34:01must have been developing the same tech and used
- 34:07it on both Tarzan and Fantasia because... From
- 34:12what I remember, it hadn't been done before,
- 34:16so that's why I wrote it down. But yeah, I mean,
- 34:18it was so nice, so cool to see. Actually, speaking
- 34:23of which, this could be a good point to bring
- 34:25out. I don't think we mentioned it before. When
- 34:26this first came out, this was straight into IMAX.
- 34:30It was the first animated film on IMAX. Yes,
- 34:33I was going to mention that, yeah. IMAX was nowhere
- 34:36near as popular back then as it was now, so it
- 34:38was even more insane. It must have been a real
- 34:42treat to see stuff like this in that format.
- 34:45I imagine that wide room in IMAX would have looked
- 34:49unbelievable. Like, the room where the orchestra
- 34:53is and everything, I think that would have looked
- 34:55unreal in IMAX. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's so cool.
- 35:00And I think seeing some of these animations in
- 35:02IMAX would be amazing. If they ever did some
- 35:06kind of IMAX re -release, I'd definitely go and
- 35:08see this. It's really worth it, I think. I would
- 35:13too. I would take a piss when the whales came
- 35:15on. Andy Oates hates whales. No, it's fine. It's
- 35:20fine. There's definitely one I didn't like more
- 35:25than this. Agreed. And I think we are going to
- 35:28be on the same page when all the whales start
- 35:32flying i thought they were just gonna i genuinely
- 35:35wrote down oh no the heat death of the universe
- 35:39because i thought the sun was exploding like
- 35:42when the sun started pulsing i was like what
- 35:45are they literally gonna have like an exploding
- 35:48star or something and all the whales are just
- 35:50gonna fly away in space which did they get the
- 35:54idea for the space whales in star wars from this
- 35:57They could have, man. Because there is a very
- 36:00similar shot when it's, like, going on the side
- 36:03and they're all going through, like, the clouds
- 36:05and then the upper cloud area. It looks pretty
- 36:09similar to the hyperspace whales. I wouldn't
- 36:12be surprised, to be fair. Like, you've seen Dave
- 36:14Filoni who runs the Star Wars stuff now. He seems
- 36:17like an animation nerd, so I wouldn't be shocked.
- 36:20And yeah, the last thing that I said was it was
- 36:23a visual treat, but splashing through clouds
- 36:26cannot be as fun as water. No, I can't imagine
- 36:29it would be, especially if you're a big, fat,
- 36:31stupid whale. Anyway, let's move on from whales,
- 36:36because obviously you hate them so much, and
- 36:38this was your worst thing that you've ever watched
- 36:40in your life. I thought it was all right. It's
- 36:44fine. It's fine. Yeah, I think it had some really
- 36:46nice, like... Some really nice musical motifs,
- 36:51as I said, and some great animation combined
- 36:57with that. 3D and 2D was great. Yeah, it was
- 37:00pretty good. It was nice. It wasn't my favorite,
- 37:03but yeah. Okay. I think this next one has a very,
- 37:08very real chance of being my favorite, to be
- 37:11honest. There's one that potentially beats it,
- 37:14but this one was Rhapsody in Blue. uh which was
- 37:18done by george gershwin so i've jotted this down
- 37:21because i knew i wouldn't remember his name but
- 37:23apparently there's a character artist back in
- 37:24the 30s or whatever called al hirschfield and
- 37:27this is like new york city animated with like
- 37:30the vibe of his art style yeah to this jazzy
- 37:33kind of music um and like i how would you describe
- 37:37the story it's like it's for individual people
- 37:39who have like this wish a guy who wants a job
- 37:42he's unemployed there's a construction worker
- 37:44who really wants to get into drumming yeah There's
- 37:47a guy and his bitch wife. Yeah, we both wrote
- 37:51that down. One of the guys is just like, God,
- 37:53I wish I could get away from my bitch wife. It's
- 37:55so weird, though. She's just spending all of
- 37:59his money, and he's just like, along for the
- 38:02ride. He just wants to dance with monkeys. Yeah,
- 38:04I've written that down as well. And the last
- 38:08one's just, which is probably the saddest one,
- 38:10just a little girl who wants her parents to pay.
- 38:13yeah which is like oh man that was sad and that
- 38:18the nanny was horrible this this was beautiful
- 38:22i adored this this was yeah and this was sublime
- 38:30and like genuinely i thought you know the animation
- 38:34as it's uh the music comes in um and it's drawing
- 38:37yes the city I thought that's all it was going
- 38:40to be. I thought it was going to be like different
- 38:43things, like keep getting drawn. So it would
- 38:45be like the guy and then it would, the line would
- 38:48carry on and everything. And I'm so glad, like
- 38:51as cool as that would be. Yeah. I'm really glad
- 38:55that it didn't. And I'm glad that it kind of
- 38:56did that start part set New York as the, as the
- 39:01background. And then we got to actually spend
- 39:04some time with these characters. The. art style
- 39:07is phenomenal it's beautiful um yeah uh because
- 39:15they they do intro if i remember rightly they
- 39:17do introduce it as like it's going to start with
- 39:20one line on the screen so i did i was the same
- 39:22as you i was like oh it's going to just be like
- 39:23a line going through drawing these cityscapes
- 39:25that's exactly what i thought but even that was
- 39:28so fascinating and interesting um yeah i was
- 39:31like yeah this is fine if it's going to be that
- 39:33it'll be pretty good and then When the animation
- 39:37kicked in, I was like, God, this is great. It
- 39:41kind of calls back to some of the other ones.
- 39:43You know, parts of it kind of give me Sorcerer's
- 39:49Apprentice vibes. Not necessarily the content,
- 39:53but like the way that it's animated and the things
- 39:55that they're doing. And maybe it's just like
- 39:59a Disney vibe kind of thing. But it was wicked.
- 40:04I loved it. You know what it reminds me of a
- 40:06little bit? Like the animation style that was
- 40:08around... I don't know what other films used
- 40:10it, but 101 Dalmatians used it. Oh, the kind
- 40:13of... It looks a bit like that. The kind of...
- 40:15No, they weren't rotoscoped, were they? But yeah,
- 40:18I know... I don't think so. I know what you mean.
- 40:22It's very like... handmade feeling to it yeah
- 40:25but it feels very stylized as well 100 i uh i
- 40:30the first thing that i wrote down when this came
- 40:32on was it really feels like disney just wanted
- 40:35to do pixar shorts yeah yeah because this this
- 40:38just feels like something that would play before
- 40:40a film and i love that i think it's great yeah
- 40:43it actually speaking of pixar it gave me some
- 40:46vibes of soul yes i think When he goes in the
- 40:51afterlife, is that like 2D lines and stuff as
- 40:53well? Yeah, the New Zealand lady that's in all
- 40:58of Taika Waititi's films. Yeah, she's like the
- 41:02villain, isn't she? Her character is the little
- 41:032D animation that's a line. So maybe that...
- 41:07And ah, actually, do you know what? That must
- 41:10be inspired by... Yeah, I think you're so right
- 41:14with that. Like, there's a similar vibe to the
- 41:17music and the art style. Exactly. I think you're
- 41:20spot on with that. I could be wrong, but... I
- 41:24think you're right. Take it as gospel from us.
- 41:26We know what we're talking about. I thought this
- 41:30was just so energetic and beautiful. The music
- 41:35was spot on. I absolutely adored this one. Yeah,
- 41:38I love this. At one point, I did write the message
- 41:44to reject the world and go ice skating, because
- 41:47that's what everyone does. But obviously they
- 41:51were just interpreting their actual desires of
- 41:55what they wanted to do. The kid go... In the
- 41:59runway, yeah. She wants to be with her parents.
- 42:02Yeah. The guy gets rid of his bitch wife. He
- 42:08just wants to be a silly little guy. He doesn't
- 42:10want to spend his money. He just wants to go
- 42:13and hang out with a monkey. Yeah. Oh, you know
- 42:15what it reminded me of as well? I don't think
- 42:17you've seen this. It's just out. this yeah but
- 42:20life of chuck there's a bit where he stops in
- 42:22the middle of it and like does a dance to like
- 42:24a street artist basically and it reminded me
- 42:27of that but like with a monkey i just really
- 42:31enjoyed that but this was yeah i adore this yeah
- 42:34i loved it there was one thing that i also wrote
- 42:37uh which is uh a c a b because that police officer
- 42:41came up to that guy who had just picked up an
- 42:44apple and was going to put it back and he tells
- 42:47him off and then he eats the apple yeah Bastard!
- 42:50What a piece of work! All cops are bastards,
- 42:53I'm telling you. Especially this guy. Especially
- 42:57that guy. The worst of them. Yeah, 100%. In the
- 43:02short. In the short, yeah. Oh no. Yeah, this
- 43:11was... I don't really have much more to say about
- 43:14this. I could wax lyrical about it all day, but
- 43:16I loved it. I totally agree. And I would say
- 43:19if anyone's wanting to watch and get a feel for
- 43:23what Fantasia 2000 is all about, watch this scene.
- 43:31If you don't have the time to watch the whole
- 43:34thing, I would highly recommend watching the
- 43:36whole thing because it really is a ride. But
- 43:39put this one on. It is... unbelievable it's gorgeous
- 43:43and yeah i i totally agree i don't really have
- 43:47much more to say about it other than i think
- 43:50it's my favorite one uh just quickly before we
- 43:52do the next show i did make a note here i can't
- 43:55remember who says it but we cut away to someone
- 43:57i think it was betty midler or something yeah
- 44:00it was yeah and We do get told very quickly,
- 44:03like, by the way, we were going to do one with
- 44:05Salvatore Dali and one based on War of the Valkyries,
- 44:07but we didn't do it. Anyway, he's the next one.
- 44:09I was like, why would you tell us that? Yeah.
- 44:12I want to see that. The Salvatore Dali one sounded
- 44:15awesome. Well, we can circle back to that, because
- 44:19that is actually something we'll talk about later,
- 44:21because it's actually out there. Interesting.
- 44:25Okay, cool. The other one that they mentioned
- 44:28that I... I wrote down was baby ballet. Um, and
- 44:34I saw that picture and I just wrote down baby
- 44:38ballet. Sounds like a fucking nightmare. Yeah.
- 44:40I was so glad that one was gone. That can stay
- 44:44gone. That can stay dead after they teased Salvador
- 44:48Dali. And after Andy has teased Salvador Dali
- 44:51to me, um, we go on to the next one, uh, which
- 44:55is the steadfast tin soldier. Am I right? Yeah,
- 45:00that's right. Yeah, this one's set to... I've
- 45:02written it down. I'm not very good at classical
- 45:04music, but I've written it down. It's a piano
- 45:05concerto, number two, Allegro Opus 102 by Dmitri
- 45:09Shostakovich. I would never remember that. Yeah.
- 45:16Yeah, basically it's a retelling of the Steadfast
- 45:19Tin Soldier. Yeah, by Hans Christian Andersen.
- 45:25Yeah, I didn't like this one at all. Yeah? No?
- 45:29You know what? Great animation. I'll say it like
- 45:34that. The Jack in Box was super scary and freaky.
- 45:38I didn't like it. He was a pervert in a box.
- 45:41I like this weird CG face and stuff. Do you know
- 45:47the original story? Because I didn't. What? The
- 45:50actual... The Steadfast Ten Soldier. No, I didn't.
- 45:54So this version is basically just like, there's
- 45:57a tin soldier, falls on over for a ballet dancing
- 45:59toy thing, but the Jack in the Box wants to get
- 46:02with her. So the Jack in the Box is mean and
- 46:04pervert. He knows he's a creep as well, because
- 46:08as soon as the cops turn up, the soldier turns
- 46:10up, he starts hiding away. He knows he's a pervert.
- 46:15He bends off. In this version, the soldier gets
- 46:20lost, and I think gets eaten by a fish, and then...
- 46:23Whoever owns the house buys the fish and the
- 46:25tin soldier hands it back home. And he defeats
- 46:28the evil Jack in the Box. But in the original
- 46:30version, apparently, it's like the same kind
- 46:32of story, but then at the end, there's a little
- 46:36boy who's just like, I'm just going to put this
- 46:37tin soldier in the fire, actually. And then,
- 46:39apparently, Wynn just blows the ballet dancer
- 46:43in the fire as well, and then they both just
- 46:45burn to death. And it's like, oh, what's the
- 46:47moral of this story? Apparently... I looked it
- 46:52up and it's like the moral of the story is to
- 46:53be brave and follow love. It's like, I don't
- 46:56want to follow love if I'm going to end up in
- 46:57the fire. Are you sure? Jesus, that's wild. Yeah,
- 47:02she stands alongside the tin soldier and both
- 47:05are shot into the burning fireplace where he
- 47:07melts into the shape of a heart with her and
- 47:10they go to toy heaven and he has both legs. Great.
- 47:15I hate this. I hated it. I thought it was poo
- 47:18-poo. It wasn't poo -poo. I think it's really
- 47:21well done animated -wise. I think they apparently
- 47:27used a real actress to do the dancing for the
- 47:30ballet dancer and then animated based on that.
- 47:33You can kind of tell she's got some really natural
- 47:36movements. People must have passion for this
- 47:39story who heard it as a kid. I hate it. It's
- 47:41creepy and I don't... I don't like thinking about
- 47:44it. Agreed. Yeah, I don't like it. If the thing
- 47:48about recording the real dancers' moves and then
- 47:51animating them, that's another callback to Star
- 47:55Wars, as that's what they did in Clone Wars with
- 47:59Ray Park and his mole fighting. Oh, yeah. It
- 48:03always circles back, baby. I'm tired of something
- 48:11even... niche to me oh my they did it for transformers
- 48:14one um for the fight at the end but then they
- 48:17scrapped that because they're like this looks
- 48:19like two dudes fighting instead of two transforming
- 48:22robots so they scrapped that and worked in a
- 48:24lot more of like oh he's going to turn into a
- 48:25car and then that comes into the fight scene
- 48:27and stuff like that why this is nothing to do
- 48:29no but that would be like Megatron and Optimus
- 48:35just fighting like naked snake and like solid
- 48:39snake and liquid on the top just like slugging
- 48:45it out you know what something I'll give this
- 48:50and it sounds like a backhanded compliment but
- 48:52that kind of era of early CGI mixed with 2D animation
- 48:57yeah and be creepy and it does work in the favor
- 48:59for that jack -in -the -box he did he unsettled
- 49:02me yeah i'll just say that quickly but he was
- 49:04a little he was a little freak and i didn't like
- 49:06him but yeah uh i thought it was a really good
- 49:09use of 2d and 3d again because there was some
- 49:11beautiful water scenes that were hand -drawn
- 49:13like when he goes down the drain stunning the
- 49:17water uh the rain animation's been scanned from
- 49:20bambi i read that just before that's crazy that's
- 49:24genuinely mad um but yeah i mean 60 years old
- 49:29at this point i'm still like i just use that
- 49:31that's the best we can do we've got it just put
- 49:34it in yeah that's that's wild i had no idea that
- 49:39they could even do that kind of thing but that's
- 49:41that's cool as hell what the hell was that It
- 49:45was the jack -in -the -box. Oh no, he's here!
- 49:49He's come for your pussy. No! We might have to
- 49:53cut that out. So yeah, anyway, that was... I
- 49:59don't want to talk about it anymore because I
- 50:01hated it. No, yeah. The next thing I wrote was
- 50:06Vader. Yeah, this was... James O'Donoghue introduced
- 50:09this. I thought he was delightful as always.
- 50:11I liked his little joke about... what is it when
- 50:14he says something like they finally asked the
- 50:16question what if flamingos had a yo -yo what
- 50:20he's great i wrote after this one i wrote flamingos
- 50:27and i put best one so far yeah i loved this as
- 50:32well i think it's absolutely phenomenal so this
- 50:36one it's by it's the piece called the carnival
- 50:40of the animals finale by camille saint sands
- 50:43yeah and it's basically you've got again one
- 50:47silly little guy he's just a flamingo with a
- 50:49yo -yo and the other flamingos are like no get
- 50:51on get on program why can't you be normal yeah
- 50:55yeah he has to do the little thing and he hates
- 50:57it he just wants to be a goofy little guy yeah
- 50:59it's just so cute uh it was uh again it's one
- 51:03that we can't really talk like loads them out
- 51:05about because it's so short as well but it's
- 51:09yeah the animation is stunning when he's when
- 51:12they're like doing the synchronized thing and
- 51:15he's shooting the yo -yo forward he's shooting
- 51:16the yo -yo behind the yo -yo tricks the way that
- 51:20they're animated are unbelievable they look so
- 51:23good and i i imagine that the um the animators
- 51:30must have like taken some yo -yo tricks um and
- 51:34and just like done the same thing as the dancer
- 51:38and animated around them yeah the guy who directed
- 51:41this uh worked with someone on pocahontas who
- 51:44used to do like loads of yo -yo tricks and it's
- 51:46inspired by him no way that's cool yeah i really
- 51:50like the guy in the office wow uh this is so
- 51:53of its time as well like yo -yos you know have
- 51:57you ever how long has it been since you have
- 51:59seen a yo -yo it'll be at least Two decades.
- 52:03I was going to say about, like, 15 years. I haven't
- 52:06seen one for so long, and that goes right towards
- 52:10the time of that being released. Yeah, it's because
- 52:14all the other flamingos, like, they keep us down
- 52:16and don't let us play with our yo -yos, man.
- 52:18I know. I know. The colours on this were so poppin'
- 52:22as well. You know what? It reminded me a bit
- 52:24of... I just can't wait to be king in Lion King.
- 52:26It has that kind of, like, beautiful poppin'
- 52:28colour. 100%. I totally agree. and yeah it was
- 52:33it was gorgeous it was stunning very pink i loved
- 52:36it yeah um and the the movement in the animation
- 52:39when he's having to do like the normal flamingo
- 52:45things and he's like got that really irritated
- 52:46face it's so funny it's so great and then he
- 52:49starts getting happier and happier because he
- 52:51notices the yo -yo like doing certain things
- 52:54as he's moving and he's like oh and his neck
- 52:57picks up and his gestures change I yeah this
- 53:00was fantastic yeah it's just full of expression
- 53:04it's full of charm and I yeah I can't fault it
- 53:08I think I wish it was longer I wish it was a
- 53:11tiny bit longer but yeah this is the First, I
- 53:14actually noted down, this is the first time I've
- 53:16wanted one of these to be longer. Yeah, it's
- 53:19great. I really, really, really liked it. I liked
- 53:22the little in -between parts where he got, like,
- 53:25scalded and told off and then there's that one
- 53:28where he gets beaten down into the water and
- 53:30it's like, oh my god, they're drowning him! And
- 53:33then he comes out with all the yo -yos and is
- 53:35like, nah. He almost went out like Bruce Willis
- 53:39in Glass. LAUGHTER Oh no, not the puddle! Yeah,
- 53:49amazing. Really liked it. I don't think I can
- 53:52say much more. It's great. Me neither. so this
- 53:56next one is uh it plays on what we were talking
- 54:00about earlier which is like oh you go like it's
- 54:02meant to be there forever and you go and sometimes
- 54:04it's showing and sometimes it's not it's it's
- 54:06just social apprentice again it's just mickey
- 54:08mouse with his little wizard hat on making booms
- 54:10carrying buckets we know the deal uh firstly
- 54:13pen and teller introduced this uh weird that
- 54:16was cute yeah i like that I like when he chops
- 54:19his ponytail off. That was very funny. And then
- 54:23I just put, oh, it's keynote time. Holds up so
- 54:27fucking well and underlined it. And then I said,
- 54:32this is actually about the dangers of automation
- 54:34and AI. Yeah, that's a good point. They were
- 54:38so ahead of the curve, man. you know um what
- 54:43you were saying before with uh the the new york
- 54:46city one where it's like this could play before
- 54:48film this feels like such a it could be like
- 54:51just an isolated like you know how looney tunes
- 54:53used to release their things as shorts mickey
- 54:55did as well but they were never as good um this
- 54:58is just a perfect isolated short the music's
- 55:01amazing the the animation's amazing It's a very
- 55:05simple story, but a very effective story. I totally
- 55:07agree. I love it so much. I got a bit confused
- 55:12because, you know, when he goes on to the top
- 55:14of the mountain, I was like, oh, this is where
- 55:17the devil's going to come. And then I totally
- 55:21forgot that that's in Bald Mountain instead of
- 55:23this one. So I was like, Mickey, no! Not in the
- 55:26dreamland! Don't make a deal with the devil,
- 55:30Mickey. and yet when um when uh what is the sorcerer
- 55:35called he's called something like yin bad or
- 55:38something like that it's yen yen sid that's it
- 55:42yen and i'll tell you how you remember that because
- 55:45if you spell it backwards it's disney i've just
- 55:47realized before you even said it yeah i only
- 55:52found that out yesterday um i read it and i was
- 55:56like that's That seems like a maybe, like, stereotypical
- 56:00name. Oh, it's Disney. Never mind. That's okay.
- 56:05Yeah, when he was doing the magic with the skull
- 56:10and, like, stuff was coming up, it looked like
- 56:14the devil from Bald Mountain. It did, yeah. Yeah.
- 56:18Yeah, that's a good point. And then it turned
- 56:20into a nice butterfly. So I was like, oh, maybe
- 56:23that's going to play into it. And that's why
- 56:25I thought it was... gonna have the devil in it
- 56:28but yeah this is great i think it's yeah everyone
- 56:32knows this um yeah if you don't it's literally
- 56:35just mickey mouse as an apprentice he steals
- 56:38his wizard sorcerer master's hat yeah he wants
- 56:41to make the broomsticks carry water instead of
- 56:42doing it himself but oh no he can't control them
- 56:45and there's too much water and he learns not
- 56:46to mess with things he doesn't understand i'm
- 56:48telling you man it's the dangers of automation
- 56:50and ai I don't think anyone describing it could
- 56:53do it justice. I think it's like a five -star
- 56:55little short. Yeah, 100%. It's worth a watch.
- 56:59Again, if you're going to watch any of them,
- 57:01and I, again, cannot stress this enough, watch
- 57:04this whole thing. It flies by. But yeah, Sorcerer's
- 57:08Apprentice is fabulous. I think this is, and
- 57:12it feels, if we count this as part of it, this
- 57:15is my favorite one. But I wouldn't want to, because
- 57:19it's from the original one, I'd probably give
- 57:21it to Rhapsody in Blue because it's new. But
- 57:23overall, this is my favourite. See, I think that
- 57:27Rhapsody in Blue kind of takes it a little bit
- 57:31for me, even if we include Sorcerer's Apprentice.
- 57:33I love Sorcerer's Apprentice, but I just thought
- 57:35Rhapsody in Blue was so unique and really interesting.
- 57:39I loved it. And is that taking into account Mickey's
- 57:43drip? Oh, yeah. Well, hmm. No, because this drip
- 57:48is fire. Immaculate. And lit. I get you, though.
- 57:55I totally get you. I don't really want to say
- 57:59it, but this feels like something you'd see traditional
- 58:03and the other ones a bit more out there. I've
- 58:06never seen this before. 100%. But I still love
- 58:10it so much. that music is great unreal um oh
- 58:17um just before we move on as well because we
- 58:20did you did mention pen and teller this is unrelated
- 58:23but it's kind of related did you know pen is
- 58:26in toy story who is he in toy story so buzz lightyear
- 58:32goes into a room he hears the voice of the tv
- 58:35come in buzz lightyear this is star command the
- 58:38advert no way Yeah. Really? The world's greatest
- 58:42action figure is now the world's greatest toy.
- 58:44That thing. He does that voice for some reason.
- 58:47No way, that's so cool. What a weird little,
- 58:51like, that's great. Is that in the first one
- 58:54or the second one? That's in the second, is it?
- 58:57This is the first one. This is literally the
- 58:59advert that convinces, or makes Buzz realise
- 59:02he's not a space ranger. So that's just a random
- 59:07little fact I've been holding in because I don't
- 59:09understand why he's in it, but it's fun. I love
- 59:11that. That's great. So directly from this, we
- 59:15get Mickey doing a... is it a reanimation a reacting
- 59:20part where he goes up and shakes the is it the
- 59:24director or the composer's hand uh yeah the first
- 59:27bit's like he shakes the composer's hand and
- 59:29that's directly from fantasia one i don't know
- 59:31if they've revoiced it so it mixes in well but
- 59:34yeah who who was it that he was shaking hands
- 59:36with in the original was it disney uh no it was
- 59:41the composer of the orchestra right i can't remember
- 59:43his name but disney voiced him in the original
- 59:45one i think that was that's what i Yeah, okay.
- 59:49But they might have revoiced him here just so
- 59:52when he comes into the next scene it kind of
- 59:55blends better. Yeah, I read that somewhere and
- 59:59I can't find it now but yeah, they did recast
- 1:00:04Mickey so it was the same voice for afterwards.
- 1:00:09But yeah, really cute little section and then
- 1:00:13another Lovely Disney character, comes along,
- 1:00:19but he's late. Big D. He's running late. Donald
- 1:00:22is the star of the next one, which is Pomp and
- 1:00:26Circumstance, am I right? Yes. Pomp and Circumstance
- 1:00:32marches 1, 2, 3, and 4 by Sir Edward Elder. Also
- 1:00:36known as Land of Hope and Glory in... england
- 1:00:39because that's what all we remember this one's
- 1:00:42super easy to describe it's noah zark yep um
- 1:00:45i was gonna say david duck that sounds nice donald
- 1:00:48duck i swear i've watched disney things before
- 1:00:50donald's donald's mutated cousin david duck uh
- 1:00:56no not daffy oh my god donald things donald duck
- 1:01:01and daisy duck are the duck version they're the
- 1:01:03two ducks going on those are and they also know
- 1:01:06Donald also sees two ducks go on to Noah's Ark
- 1:01:10as well. And he's like, huh? Oh, I guess they're
- 1:01:13the two mutant ducks then. Yeah, that's David
- 1:01:15Duck. And then Donald loses Daisy and Daisy loses
- 1:01:20Donald. Oh, it was sad because they must have
- 1:01:23drowned in the Great Purge. Yeah. Oh, never mind,
- 1:01:27there they are. It's just, you know, it's Noah's
- 1:01:29Ark. Yeah, it was very simple. I think... it's
- 1:01:35nice having donald in it and i think like some
- 1:01:38of the slapstick in it is great but at the same
- 1:01:41time donald kind of loses something by not having
- 1:01:44his voice you know what i mean yes little tantrums
- 1:01:47yeah so it kind of felt it could have been anyone
- 1:01:51in that role i mean literally the only thing
- 1:01:54that i wrote down was awe because it's cute it's
- 1:01:57really cute and it's a it's a nice little um
- 1:02:01set up for the last one i guess that like it's
- 1:02:04a nice little palate cleanser after uh sorcerer's
- 1:02:07apprentice something simple and easy to digest
- 1:02:10it's fine it's all right i was really disappointed
- 1:02:14by this one i love donald duck and i saw him
- 1:02:17on the box i watched on blu -ray and i saw him
- 1:02:19on the box like yeah my fucking boy's here yeah
- 1:02:21um it's just so like i think the animation looks
- 1:02:25good but it's like so digital and clean looking
- 1:02:28and it doesn't feel as handmade as the rest of
- 1:02:30it or yeah as passionate as the rest of it and
- 1:02:33it felt like the most basic example of what one
- 1:02:36of these could be and and that's like a bit of
- 1:02:39a insult to be honest uh i guess basic can be
- 1:02:43good but it didn't hit for me at all if this
- 1:02:45is like the donald vehicle and the last one was
- 1:02:48the mickey vehicle of like the thing like the
- 1:02:49mickey one's so much more interesting and different
- 1:02:53and it tells a good story still and obviously
- 1:02:54noah's ark is like an iconic story but i didn't
- 1:02:57really get much out of it here yeah it just feels
- 1:02:59like too boring of a story like noah's ark isn't
- 1:03:02super boring but it's just like the animals came
- 1:03:05in two by two hurrah then they got there good
- 1:03:09all right yeah um donald was there and that's
- 1:03:13like the backdressing as well like when i focused
- 1:03:15on that we're focusing on like donald slapstick
- 1:03:18looking for daisy yeah i just felt like there
- 1:03:21were too many chances that they would have actually
- 1:03:23seen donald you know go up into the gears and
- 1:03:27be like realism was definitely the the big drawback
- 1:03:32it really is like when he went through those
- 1:03:34gears he should have been mashed into a duck
- 1:03:36paste daisy should have been mourning them no
- 1:03:41but yeah i don't know i just yeah it's it's fine
- 1:03:45it's not my favorite at all it's not the worst
- 1:03:48one because we know that steadfast tin soldier
- 1:03:50but yeah i think it's the most disappointing
- 1:03:52one yeah i think i agree when you set up that
- 1:03:55it's donald and you see him naked on the hammock
- 1:03:59great phenomenal and then it just kind of loses
- 1:04:02all of his all of his charm i i really think
- 1:04:06that not having his voice is is crazy like if
- 1:04:11yeah they just had a little bit of him going
- 1:04:13kind of thing over some of it it would have been
- 1:04:17great but yeah hey how we didn't and then we
- 1:04:21close it out right yeah this is the last one
- 1:04:23yeah firebird sweet last one firebird sweet um
- 1:04:271999 no 1919 version sorry by eagles javinsky
- 1:04:32yes um i'll say it this was nearly my favorite
- 1:04:37it is beautiful i agree yeah first of all i didn't
- 1:04:41recognize the title of the song but when it hits
- 1:04:43you'll know it like i was i literally have written
- 1:04:45down oh it's that music like really iconic music
- 1:04:49but the the way this works with like there's
- 1:04:51like this uh i don't know how to describe it
- 1:04:54really a sprite yeah that's a good way to put
- 1:04:56it she's like this like nature there's this this
- 1:04:58force of nature like she turns into water and
- 1:05:01then grass and the animation on that as she's
- 1:05:04transforming through these different forms of
- 1:05:06nature was like amazing yeah the wave one was
- 1:05:09stunning when she when she like yeah like towards
- 1:05:13the end when she turns into the wave and she
- 1:05:15just gets bigger and bigger and bigger and you
- 1:05:17can see the perspective because the elk gets
- 1:05:20smaller and smaller and she's just like cover
- 1:05:23in the sky to be able to bring all this stuff
- 1:05:25back to life it was unbelievable i wrote down
- 1:05:28dark souls boss moment is that the big fire phoenix
- 1:05:32yeah when when she goes up to it and touches
- 1:05:34it and it's like oh my god that thing was uh
- 1:05:38metal like i think they must have done this piece
- 1:05:41and wise it must have been like this is our schoenberg
- 1:05:43like the satan yes on the first bald mountain
- 1:05:45and that's like this huge fiery demon bird yeah
- 1:05:49i i i said the exact same thing phoenix style
- 1:05:52thing is uh a nice call back to the og with uh
- 1:05:56the demon whose name i could not remember i think
- 1:05:59it's so cool he's got the same kind of look uh
- 1:06:03the eyes are very similar but obviously he's
- 1:06:05a bird instead and uh yeah that was really cool
- 1:06:10and really uh Really stunning. The animation
- 1:06:13in this just overall is unbelievable. The animation
- 1:06:17on the sprite is gorgeous and I said that Disney
- 1:06:21never fails to animate animals so well and I
- 1:06:24think that's the same in the Donald Duck one
- 1:06:29and it's the same in this one because the way
- 1:06:32that the elk moves is just so good. They just
- 1:06:37know what they're doing. This kind of reminded
- 1:06:39me a little bit of Moana. um as well with the
- 1:06:41big nature woman at the end it's like taffeti
- 1:06:44she starts as like a fire monster and then turns
- 1:06:47into nature so it's it's a kind of similar vibe
- 1:06:49yeah yeah taffeti and um takar i cannot remember
- 1:06:54something like that um but yeah yeah i i totally
- 1:06:58agree it gave Lots of Moana vibes. I thought
- 1:07:02this was lovely. The story was lovely. When they
- 1:07:05introduced it as like a story of life and death,
- 1:07:08I was like, oh my, what are we going to see?
- 1:07:10And then it was just like, yeah, like nature
- 1:07:13coming back to life after winter, which is lovely.
- 1:07:17And then, oh no, destruction. And it was actual
- 1:07:20like, oh my God, the whole forest is dead. Everything's
- 1:07:24died. It's so sad, but so beautiful. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:07:29And then you get that kind of like nice thing
- 1:07:30and walk away of where like nature kind of feels
- 1:07:32again. Did you know that the area is based on
- 1:07:37Yellowstone? No, not Yellowstone. It's Mount
- 1:07:41St. Helens. No, I didn't know that. So if you
- 1:07:44look up a picture of Mount St. Helens at the
- 1:07:47end, when it zooms out, it's pretty much Mount
- 1:07:51St. Helens. Oh. Yeah. So it's inspired by the
- 1:07:55eruption of Mount St. Helens, which is crazy.
- 1:07:59That makes a lot of sense. Yeah. Very cool. Sick.
- 1:08:03Yeah. Yeah. So there we go. And then it just
- 1:08:05ends. And then it just ends. There's nothing
- 1:08:08else. And it just goes on to the credits after
- 1:08:12that and the orchestra all walk away and we get
- 1:08:14a little bit of music. No, thank you for coming
- 1:08:16here. No, nothing. James Earl Jones didn't come
- 1:08:19back. Steve Martin didn't come back. Come on,
- 1:08:22guys. Steve Martin is in a post -credit scene.
- 1:08:25I missed that. I turned it off too quickly. How
- 1:08:29did they do a post -credit scene in 1999? Well,
- 1:08:33technically it's not post -credit. It's like
- 1:08:34when the credits finish, the Disney logo comes
- 1:08:38up and then you hear Steve Martin being like,
- 1:08:39camera back on me. Okay, that's quite good. I
- 1:08:43like that. And then it just finishes. Oh, dear.
- 1:08:47So that is Fantasia 2000. Andy, what did you
- 1:08:52think overall? Overall, this is a bit of a weird
- 1:08:54one to start on. It's very weird. This is the
- 1:08:56first episode. We're finding our feet in, and
- 1:08:59we hit a movie which is experimental and segmented,
- 1:09:04and we're hitting this running. Hell yeah. Overall,
- 1:09:08I really, really like this, and I think I like
- 1:09:13it more than the original, which is not something
- 1:09:15I expected to say. Yeah. Do you know what? I
- 1:09:18think I agree. I think it's, I think, There's
- 1:09:21a lot of hits. Obviously, there's a couple that
- 1:09:25don't hit. Fuck you, Steadfast Tin Soldier, you
- 1:09:28bastard. But yeah, I think nearly all of these
- 1:09:34are absolute bangers. They're so good. I really
- 1:09:39like it. I think it's a great film. I've said
- 1:09:42it like four times already during this episode.
- 1:09:45If you are interested in any of these, please
- 1:09:48just watch it because it's... it's the runtime
- 1:09:51is nothing and it's so much fun you'll have a
- 1:09:54great time i think it's worth like if even if
- 1:09:57you're not that interested like if um the first
- 1:09:59one's run time's putting you off at all i think
- 1:10:01it's probably worth saying like it's probably
- 1:10:03better you do watch it and then just be willing
- 1:10:06to skip the bits you don't like because when
- 1:10:08i was watching it there's some bits that are
- 1:10:10so long in the original that are no good in my
- 1:10:12opinion um which i don't think you have to worry
- 1:10:15about here there's like a couple where You might
- 1:10:17not like them, but they're over pretty quick
- 1:10:19if you don't. Yeah, all of the animations, they
- 1:10:25feel not... They don't overstay their welcome.
- 1:10:28I think the closest one to overstaying its welcome
- 1:10:32is Pines of Rome. Like you said, it has those
- 1:10:36lulls in it, but I don't think it's... too much
- 1:10:39of an issue but yeah everything's everything
- 1:10:41just flies by it's it's like watching a compilation
- 1:10:44of like pixar shorts or something like that it's
- 1:10:47great yeah it is yeah so we've told you what
- 1:10:49we think but let's see what everyone else thinks
- 1:10:52um andy and i are huge fans of the social media
- 1:10:55app letterboxd so we're going to check out some
- 1:10:59of the reviews from there yeah i've actually
- 1:11:02held off blogging this because you were going
- 1:11:04to pick up some reviews and i wanted to like
- 1:11:06i didn't want to see anything i just want to
- 1:11:08I'm in this raw. Good thinking. So, first one.
- 1:11:12Rhapsody in Blue is so strong that literally
- 1:11:15every other segment could suck and this would
- 1:11:18still be one of the greatest movies of all time.
- 1:11:20Agreed. That's fair enough. Why did this film
- 1:11:26of 74 minutes need nine different hosts? Agreed.
- 1:11:30Yeah, that was a good point. Like I said earlier,
- 1:11:33I like the intimacy of the conductors in reducing
- 1:11:36it. that'd be a cooler guess but like yeah i
- 1:11:39get that yeah agreed agreed put this on for rhapsody
- 1:11:43in blue stayed for the flamingo with a yo -yo
- 1:11:45i'm glad that it's not just us i know it's so
- 1:11:48good i can't wait another 40 years for the next
- 1:11:54fantasia so maybe we'll see some of those that's
- 1:11:57by the same person that did the one that said
- 1:11:59rhapsody in blue is so strong they've they've
- 1:12:03reviewed this like five times someone said that
- 1:12:08Noah's Ark scene made the sequel peak which I
- 1:12:12do not agree with damn I don't get that no not
- 1:12:16at all can't wait to see Fantasia 3000 in brackets
- 1:12:20only 975 years left 7 out of 10 so yeah it seems
- 1:12:25like a lot of people like this and they should
- 1:12:27because it's great yeah you know what speaking
- 1:12:30of Fantasia 3000 right That's not where we were
- 1:12:33going to go with this. So I actually do have
- 1:12:35some notes written about this. Are you trying
- 1:12:39to pitch? Are you trying to pitch this to Disney?
- 1:12:41This isn't me. You know what, actually? They
- 1:12:44had a pitch from... So back before Fantasy 2000
- 1:12:48came out, they actually had a pitch for something
- 1:12:49called Musicana. This was worked on by Wolfgang
- 1:12:53Reithemann, who has worked on quite a lot of
- 1:12:56Disney films, and Mel Shaw. They got really,
- 1:12:59really invested in this. there's some beautiful
- 1:13:02artwork you can find this is called musicana
- 1:13:04this should give you an example of what they
- 1:13:06were looking at we had one which this is going
- 1:13:08to sound familiar if you're a disney fan jazz
- 1:13:11music in like the south of america with frogs
- 1:13:15does that sound familiar at all i have no idea
- 1:13:18what you could be talking about at all no of
- 1:13:22course yeah it's very similar princess and the
- 1:13:24frog i couldn't actually find anything about
- 1:13:26whether they were inspired on this it seems like
- 1:13:29Everything I could see about the development
- 1:13:30of that, it seems like they just came to this
- 1:13:32same conclusion, but it could also be a lie.
- 1:13:35They also did Alibaba and the Forty Thieves,
- 1:13:38which obviously kind of ties in with Aladdin,
- 1:13:40but this looks totally different. It doesn't
- 1:13:43lose any inspiration there. They had one called
- 1:13:47Philandia, which was about giant ice and sun
- 1:13:50gods doing battle. They had a Chinese -inspired
- 1:13:53one called Emperor's Nightingale with Mickey
- 1:13:55Mouse, and John Lester was actually going to
- 1:13:57work on that one. Oh, nice. There's one called
- 1:14:00The Rain God, where a monkey steals from God.
- 1:14:03I don't know what that is. What? Pretty badass.
- 1:14:07That's cool. And there was a South American sequence
- 1:14:10as well, and they presented this to the executives,
- 1:14:13and they just pointed at the Fantasia original
- 1:14:15bombing. um and it didn't go any further forward
- 1:14:18um mel shaw stayed with disney he kept animating
- 1:14:22but this was the thing that inspired wolfgang
- 1:14:25reichelman to leave um but then following this
- 1:14:28we got obviously fantasia 2000 they went and
- 1:14:31make fantasia 2006 that was actually gonna happen
- 1:14:35and then this just didn't do well like two bombs
- 1:14:38in a row so that just kind of dwindled out so
- 1:14:42from what it seems Fantasia 2006 would have been
- 1:14:46kind of stepping away from classical music a
- 1:14:48little bit. It would have been music from around
- 1:14:51the world. And some of these actually got made
- 1:14:54and finished and released. So I'll run through
- 1:14:58a couple of them with you. One of them has actually
- 1:15:00been mentioned already. It's called Destino.
- 1:15:03It's featured on the Blu -ray as a special feature,
- 1:15:05but it's also on Disney Plus as its own standalone
- 1:15:07little thing. It's also on YouTube. And this
- 1:15:11is the Salvatore Dali one. uh weird weird weird
- 1:15:17and freaky how so it's just very abstract i have
- 1:15:24no idea what's going on you're not really meant
- 1:15:25to know what's going on um it's beautifully animated
- 1:15:28um but this was started in the in the uh late
- 1:15:3240s with disney and delhi himself um and then
- 1:15:36it was kind of like buried because that never
- 1:15:38made money And then Roy Disney, who I think is
- 1:15:41Disney's nephew or something like that, he found
- 1:15:44it and unearthed it and came back to it. And
- 1:15:46it's good. It's interesting to look at. I'm not
- 1:15:50great with abstract art, to be honest, so I'm
- 1:15:52not the person to ask. But I think just for the
- 1:15:54fact it's Salvatore Dali in Disney, and it's
- 1:15:58like six minutes long, it's worth checking out.
- 1:16:00That is crazy. i'm just looking up it said it
- 1:16:04was so it began in 1945 and only finished in
- 1:16:082003 it took 58 years to to complete yeah it's
- 1:16:14crazy yeah of course it wasn't like in constant
- 1:16:17development like you say it got lost at some
- 1:16:20point so but that's wild yeah it's so strange
- 1:16:25and that's like something you can just watch
- 1:16:26like on disney plus right now if you wanted to
- 1:16:28great cool like i say it's elsewhere um lorenzo
- 1:16:32was the next one this is a similar thing where
- 1:16:34it did get pitched back then and then it got
- 1:16:36completed now so if we say destino was like based
- 1:16:39on like kind of mexican culture this one seems
- 1:16:41a bit more spanish it's like a tango music one
- 1:16:44of the facts i read about this is the animator
- 1:16:46it said something like he went to a virgin megastore
- 1:16:49and spent like 150 of his own money on tango
- 1:16:51music to write this which i just like that little
- 1:16:54fact um basically it's this Huge, pompous, fluffy
- 1:17:00cat. He's like, I'm the best cat. I'm the bee's
- 1:17:03knees and all this shit. And this cat comes in
- 1:17:05with no tail. And he's like, the big cat's like,
- 1:17:08kind of like doing this like, kind of like, you
- 1:17:09know, like inch big signature of his fingers
- 1:17:12that you'd expect for maybe not a tail. Like
- 1:17:16taking the make out of the size of his tail.
- 1:17:17This cat puts a hex on the bigger cat. Oh, now
- 1:17:21your tail's like in control of you. So the tail
- 1:17:23gets possessed. it's like dancing with him it's
- 1:17:26like take you know it's like making his life
- 1:17:28a nightmare and then the bigger cat ended up
- 1:17:30having to get rid of his tail because of it oh
- 1:17:33no it's really fun and really cute and um really
- 1:17:37well animated i i really like this one the music's
- 1:17:40totally different as well for being tango music
- 1:17:42cool this next one has an interesting history
- 1:17:46so um this one's called one by one and the music's
- 1:17:49done by someone called libo m And he worked on
- 1:17:53The Lion King. He did a lot of that stuff. This
- 1:17:55was a song that was meant to be in the first
- 1:17:57Lion King. It gets cut. It's still in the musical
- 1:18:02version, but they take that song and they readapt
- 1:18:05it into this. And it's just a show with kids
- 1:18:06in Africa flying kites. And then after, funnily
- 1:18:10enough, actually, after Fantasia 2006 was cancelled,
- 1:18:13this ended up as a bonus feature on the Lion
- 1:18:15King Dude DVD. Oh, sick. That's lovely. At least
- 1:18:18it found its way somewhere. Yeah. And it's okay.
- 1:18:23It's alright. I didn't really care for it. It's
- 1:18:26fine. There's nothing special about the animation
- 1:18:29or the story or the music. I must have heard
- 1:18:32the song because I've seen Lion King live, but
- 1:18:34I don't really like the version of it, controversially.
- 1:18:38It's fine. This one, like I said, you can get
- 1:18:41it on the Lion King Blu -ray or YouTube again.
- 1:18:45This next one I actually couldn't find on YouTube.
- 1:18:48It is on Disney+. This one's very interesting.
- 1:18:52I probably wouldn't even talk about any of them
- 1:18:54other than Dali if it wasn't for this one. This
- 1:18:58one's called The Little Match Girl. This one
- 1:19:01takes its inspiration from Russia. It's based
- 1:19:03on a poem or something like that. I'm going to
- 1:19:07read you my notes in a bit, but I do want to
- 1:19:09warn you that I'm going to spoil this short.
- 1:19:11So if you are listening... and you don't want
- 1:19:15to be spoiled for the work you're doing check
- 1:19:16it out for yourself i do recommend it time codes
- 1:19:18are below to skip to the ranking which we'll
- 1:19:20do next but also probably watch it because it's
- 1:19:23like what five minutes long yeah give it a watch
- 1:19:26and then pause us right now and come back yeah
- 1:19:29are you paused uh but not you james you're getting
- 1:19:32spoiled so it's gorgeous animation actually reminds
- 1:19:36me a bit of do you remember anastasia yes good
- 1:19:39film yeah Looks a bit like that. So this is a
- 1:19:42story about a little girl who's homeless. She's
- 1:19:44trying to sell matches on the streets, but no
- 1:19:47one's buying them. And she takes a break in an
- 1:19:51alleyway on a night and she's trying to get some
- 1:19:52warmth. So she's lighting up matches. And in
- 1:19:54the flame, you can see this different life of
- 1:19:57like her grandmother caring for her and looking
- 1:19:59after her. It's like Christmas. And then we see
- 1:20:03like it transitions a bit. The grandmother comes
- 1:20:06in the alley, picks the kid up and walks away.
- 1:20:10As she walks away, you realize it's not actually
- 1:20:12the kid that's being picked up, it's the kid's
- 1:20:14soul. The grandmother is dead, the kid is dead,
- 1:20:19and the grandmother has come down from heaven
- 1:20:21to guide the kid to heaven. The kid died in the
- 1:20:24other way. What the fuck? My notes go, like,
- 1:20:27just really, like, gorgeous, this reminds me
- 1:20:29of Anastasia. Probably the shot I can most imagine
- 1:20:31in Fantasia. Golly, this is sad. Oh my god, I'm
- 1:20:35crying. Fuck, fuck, fuck. I did not expect that
- 1:20:41ending in a Disney movie. What the fuck? That's
- 1:20:45so fucked. It's horrible. It's really sad. That
- 1:20:49sounds awful. Apparently, they did play about
- 1:20:52with, like, listen, son, we're Disney. We don't
- 1:20:54do this. They played about with Miranda's and
- 1:20:57nothing felt like it was good enough to replace
- 1:21:01this, so they stuck with it, which, yes, credit
- 1:21:03to them. But goddammit, it's a miserable little
- 1:21:06show. Jesus. That sounds horrible. yeah i almost
- 1:21:10feel bad for making people pause and watch it
- 1:21:13but um if i had a cry city yeah i've got a tear
- 1:21:18in my eye yeah it's very sad but that's yeah
- 1:21:21that those are some um i don't think everything
- 1:21:23we cover is going to have anything like that
- 1:21:25that's probably going to be the only time we
- 1:21:27ever have something where it's like this had
- 1:21:28a sequel it was cancelled but here's four complete
- 1:21:31scenes yeah exactly i mean you can't you kind
- 1:21:35of have to expect that when obviously they were
- 1:21:38working on fantasia 2006 so there will be completed
- 1:21:42parts that are out there it's just a shame that
- 1:21:45like unless they're working on another one at
- 1:21:48some point we're probably not going to get those
- 1:21:51kind of, and with the rise of like Disney and
- 1:21:55Pixar shorts, we're not going to get the rise
- 1:21:58of that kind of stuff again, which is a shame.
- 1:22:01I think, yeah, if they ever touched on this again,
- 1:22:03it's more likely than not, let's be real, it's
- 1:22:05probably just going to be shorts on Disney. It's
- 1:22:07not going to be like a feature. Well, think of
- 1:22:09the, what was that Mickey Mouse one where it's
- 1:22:13like an old and a new one at the same time. Oh
- 1:22:16yeah, they did like a Steamboat Willie kind of
- 1:22:19follow -up. Yeah, which was sick. It was so fun.
- 1:22:23But yeah, it's a shame that we might not get
- 1:22:26as interesting stuff, but you never know, there
- 1:22:28might be some fucking weird video games at some
- 1:22:31point. True, true. Can't wait. So with that all
- 1:22:34said and done, I think it's time we give Fantasia
- 1:22:372000 its dues and declare where we put it in
- 1:22:40our ranking system. Our official ranking system
- 1:22:43that we came up with, it's a cute little way
- 1:22:45to keep this on topic. On the bottom of the top,
- 1:22:48we've got the bargain bin. We'd reserve this
- 1:22:51for anything straight to DVD that's not even
- 1:22:54worth the time. We've got it straight in that
- 1:22:55goddamn bargain bin. Not even straight to video,
- 1:22:57it's just straight in the bin. Yeah, straight
- 1:22:59in the bargain bin. Some grandma might pick it
- 1:23:02up for 50 pence. Oh, my grandson liked this one.
- 1:23:06And she brings it home and it's... Goddamn garbage.
- 1:23:08And you can't say anything because it's your
- 1:23:10lovely grandma. It's the goddamn steadfast tin
- 1:23:13soldier again. I hate it so much. The next rank
- 1:23:20above bargain bin, we've got straight to video.
- 1:23:23This is a fete of most Disney sequels, apparently.
- 1:23:27Something just, it's whatever. Straight to video.
- 1:23:31out of sight out of mind could be good um probably
- 1:23:33not you can watch it yeah next we have our diamond
- 1:23:36edition so this is uh if you're familiar with
- 1:23:39disney home media this is something they would
- 1:23:40do in a big re -release they would declare this
- 1:23:43is the diamond edition of the lion king or something
- 1:23:45like that so this is something that may still
- 1:23:47have just been on dvd or blu -ray or video but
- 1:23:50it does deserve that little extra bit of attention
- 1:23:55It's like when games would do that, like, player's
- 1:23:59choice kind of thing. Yeah, exactly, yeah. But
- 1:24:02better. But better. And finally, we have Disney
- 1:24:05Classics. So, funny enough, this one actually
- 1:24:07is, technically speaking, a Disney Classic already,
- 1:24:10like, in the real world. But this is basically
- 1:24:13saying this is a sequel that's so worthy of its
- 1:24:16original successor that it should actually just
- 1:24:18be a Disney Classic itself. It should be in that
- 1:24:20original run of films. It should have been a
- 1:24:23category we released if it wasn't. This one,
- 1:24:26like I say, was. Just because it was, it doesn't
- 1:24:29mean it's necessarily going to be here. Like,
- 1:24:30one or two is technically a Disney classic, but
- 1:24:32is it going to make it up there? Who knows? We'll
- 1:24:34find out in 50 weeks or whatever. Which of these
- 1:24:39four categories do you think is best befitting
- 1:24:42of Fantasia 2000? Oh, baby. I think this is fantastic.
- 1:24:50And I think... We skip the bargain bin. It's
- 1:24:53not going in there. It's not straight to video.
- 1:24:57This was definitely not. I think we're going
- 1:25:01to brush off that diamond. No, throw that diamond
- 1:25:07in the bargain bin. We're going Disney Classics,
- 1:25:09baby. I think this is great. I think it's well
- 1:25:13worth a Disney Classics rating. I think nearly
- 1:25:17everything smashes it out of the park. For me
- 1:25:22personally, yeah, this is a Disney classic. I
- 1:25:24really enjoyed this. I had a great time. And
- 1:25:27I was coming in being like, this is just going
- 1:25:30to be Fantasia again. And I was very pleasantly
- 1:25:34surprised and had a great time with nearly all
- 1:25:38of this. So yeah, I would say Disney classic.
- 1:25:41What about you, my boy? What do you think? i
- 1:25:45think i gotta agree man like if for me like i
- 1:25:47said it's slightly above the original just because
- 1:25:50it's the hit rates better yeah the pacing for
- 1:25:54being shorter just means that those ones you
- 1:25:56don't like if you don't like it it's not here
- 1:25:58for long yeah and it's it is just worthy isn't
- 1:26:03it it's just really cool fun man it's just fun
- 1:26:06it's oh yeah i i really like it steadfast tin
- 1:26:10soldier we can take that out and put that in
- 1:26:12the bargain bin though I'd happily leave that
- 1:26:15in the bargain bin, yeah. Where it could rot
- 1:26:17forever. Yeah. That creepy fucking jack -in -the
- 1:26:21-box can fuck off. Since he's clutching on, I
- 1:26:25guess, the creepy classics as well. I guess.
- 1:26:30But the bad definitely is outweighed tremendously
- 1:26:33by the good. 100%. Yeah. Love it. and with that
- 1:26:39done i guess we can wrap it up so this has been
- 1:26:43a bit of a longer episode i imagine because of
- 1:26:45the situation of the film but next week we're
- 1:26:49looking at a bit more of a traditional sequel
- 1:26:53And kind of what you'd expect from this podcast.
- 1:26:56We're looking at Bambi 2, maybe. Bambi 2, baby.
- 1:26:59The deer is back and going on other adventures.
- 1:27:04What's going to happen? I don't know. I've never
- 1:27:07seen it. Me neither. Oh, really? Oh. No, I've
- 1:27:11never seen this one. Oh, wow. Maybe seen Bambi.
- 1:27:14I feel like this is going to be another one where
- 1:27:16I've definitely seen Bambi and then I'm going
- 1:27:17to stick it on. I don't remember any of this.
- 1:27:19See, that's what I feel like I'm going to be
- 1:27:22like with Bambi 1 as well, because I'm just like,
- 1:27:24I remember parts of it. I remember Thumper. What
- 1:27:27a dude. I remember Thumper. And I remember what
- 1:27:32happens. Can I remember the rest of it? No, I
- 1:27:35just remember there's some nice flowers and stuff.
- 1:27:38Yeah, I think there's a character called Flowers.
- 1:27:41Okay, I might not have seen Bambi 1. I don't
- 1:27:45remember. I feel like I have, though. Be an interesting
- 1:27:49journey, though. Yeah. A very interesting journey.
- 1:27:51I'm very much looking forward to it. So, Bambi
- 1:27:551, and then watching Bambi 1, and then talking
- 1:27:58about Bambi 2 with you, our listeners, and my
- 1:28:03wonderful co -host, Mr. Andy. In the meantime,
- 1:28:08just to wrap it up, I think we could confirm
- 1:28:11this is going to be a fortnightly podcast, or
- 1:28:15if you're American, bi -weekly. That's how they
- 1:28:18say it, right? Yeah. That sounds like two a week
- 1:28:21to me. I don't know why they do that. Every two
- 1:28:23weeks, this podcast will release. Yeah, that's
- 1:28:26the easiest way to say it. Yeah. And it will
- 1:28:30be on Tuesdays, if I've got that right. I believe
- 1:28:33it's every other Tuesday you'll get this. Cool.
- 1:28:36Great. In the meantime, where can you find us?
- 1:28:39Well, we've got AfterEverAfterPod on Instagram,
- 1:28:42and we have a Gmail. Do you remember where the
- 1:28:45Gmail is, James? Yeah, that would be AfterEverAfterPod
- 1:28:48at Gmail .com. We're happy to get any letters
- 1:28:52at all. You know, these are films where, like,
- 1:28:55I don't think you're coming at them strictly
- 1:28:57with the most critical lens. You know, everyone's
- 1:28:59got their own, like, little childhood nostalgia,
- 1:29:01so I actually would generally be very interested
- 1:29:03to hear different... Different opinions. Did
- 1:29:05we get it right? Did we get it wrong? Yeah, it'd
- 1:29:07be nice to know if someone prefers the sequel
- 1:29:10to the original as well. Let us know if any of
- 1:29:14these, that you really like the sequel and you
- 1:29:17hate the original. Definitely. In the meantime,
- 1:29:19I'd also like to thank Joe Taron, who did the
- 1:29:22theme tune for the podcast. We absolutely love
- 1:29:24it. Thank you, Joe. Thank you, Joe. I'd also
- 1:29:27like to thank Jordan, who did all the artwork
- 1:29:28for Instagram and also helped with the development
- 1:29:30of the podcast. And where can the people find
- 1:29:37you, Jim? So I'm on Instagram at Jimmy Smerds.
- 1:29:41I'm also on Letterboxd as I think my name is
- 1:29:46Nat Rumpf on there. Yeah. You can probably also
- 1:29:49just search my name, which is James Smerden on
- 1:29:52there and you'll find me on there. Follow me.
- 1:29:55I like having people to follow on Letterboxd.
- 1:29:59What about you, Andy? Where can they find you?
- 1:30:02Same as yourself. I'm on Instagram. The one to
- 1:30:05follow is Oatmans Movies. That's O -A -T -M -U
- 1:30:08-N -S Movies. And then on Letterboxd at Audi
- 1:30:11Boat. So that was Fantasia 2000. And that is
- 1:30:16the end of this episode. Andy, I'll see you after
- 1:30:20Ever After. Take care. See you next time.
