Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? It
- 0:15Speaker 1: is Adam Kaplan and Jeff Mosher for Inside the Birds
- 0:18Speaker 1: and we are in the first full week it's technically
- 0:21Speaker 1: week two, but the first full week of the Eagle
- 0:24Speaker 1: search for an offensive coordinators. We're starting to get some
- 0:27Speaker 1: answers as to who's not coming. And then the Eagles are,
- 0:30Speaker 1: of course, are continuing their carousel of having some guys,
- 0:34Speaker 1: some familiar faces in and out for interviews. Adam, so
- 0:38Speaker 1: let's talk about the situation as it stands, because I
- 0:40Speaker 1: know a lot of people really had their hopes up
- 0:44Speaker 1: for either Mike McDaniel or Brian Dabele McDaniel. You know,
- 0:50Speaker 1: McDaniel's gonna go be the OC in LA for the
- 0:54Speaker 1: Chargers under Harbaugh, and then Dabeles sort of has the
- 0:58Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills head coaching potential job along with the Titans
- 1:02Speaker 1: OC job. Neither guy gonna be with the Eagles. Not
- 1:06Speaker 1: surprising to you or me given what we have been
- 1:09Speaker 1: talking about on this podcast and hearing.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Mike mcdan was never fitt. He never
- 1:13Speaker 2: even agreed to do an interview. So I mean, I
- 1:16Speaker 2: understand every team if you talk to them they'll have
- 1:18Speaker 2: a list of guys they really like, they're interested in
- 1:20Speaker 2: talking to. It just didn't fit stylistically. I just didn't
- 1:24Speaker 2: with Hurts. It's just not a good fit. Hurts is
- 1:25Speaker 2: not a timing and rhythm thrower.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Every once in a while you go, wow, that was
- 1:29Speaker 2: really good. But he just he just can't do it consistently.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Now it's not just him, Zach Robinson. They're looking at
- 1:36Speaker 2: a lot of West Coast guys. Now, I understand. They
- 1:38Speaker 2: don't all run it the same way. It's like any defense,
- 1:41Speaker 2: not every Fandrew disciple. They don't all run it like Vic.
- 1:44Speaker 2: There was some nuances, some differences, but it just was
- 1:48Speaker 2: never anything. I'm like, this is not gonna happen. But
- 1:51Speaker 2: they could wish for it all they want. But the
- 1:53Speaker 2: Brian Dabele and let me just a separate fact from fiction.
- 1:57Speaker 2: This is what I You know, I've every television interview
- 1:58Speaker 2: I've done the last te week where this is going
- 2:00Speaker 2: to go. He's going to go to Tennessee as a
- 2:02Speaker 2: head coach or the offensive coordinator. So I'll explain it
- 2:05Speaker 2: more detail here since I have more time. You know,
- 2:07Speaker 2: TV you got three minutes here, We've got twenty, but
- 2:09Speaker 2: I'm not gonna take that long. It take two minutes.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So basically, the Jordan manager Mike Burganci worked with with
- 2:16Speaker 2: day Ball in Kansas City. I've we've known each other
- 2:19Speaker 2: for a number of years. Sala on his wish list
- 2:22Speaker 2: when in day Ball he was from what I understand,
- 2:25Speaker 2: it was right up there. Now, I didn't know if
- 2:27Speaker 2: Sala was going to get the job. I thought Maggie
- 2:28Speaker 2: was going to get the job. But Salah really, because
- 2:30Speaker 2: he's going against him. He knows how good of a
- 2:32Speaker 2: play caller is. Struct structure, contact, context matters. You could
- 2:36Speaker 2: look at rankings, Oh well, why isn't it It wasn't
- 2:39Speaker 2: that great. It's all about player development. He's there to
- 2:42Speaker 2: develop the quarterback. He Everyone I've talked to who worked
- 2:46Speaker 2: with day Ball in Buffalo raved about his ability to
- 2:50Speaker 2: challenge Josh Allen to get him play the right way
- 2:52Speaker 2: because he was a wild child. I mean, he was
- 2:54Speaker 2: this great, big athlete with a great arm, with terrible
- 2:56Speaker 2: accuracy and terrible mechanics. So Dabell did a great job.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So yeah, I know he did. He talked to the Eagles,
- 3:05Speaker 2: he goles, we're one of them, and it just didn't
- 3:07Speaker 2: work out. I don't think it was ever going to
- 3:09Speaker 2: work out to me ounce with you, because there were
- 3:12Speaker 2: at least three head head coaching candidates I knew of
- 3:14Speaker 2: who had had him on their list. It's like the
- 3:17Speaker 2: running joke with Vic. Fangiel was one of the jobs,
- 3:23Speaker 2: one of the one of the head coaching searchers before
- 3:25Speaker 2: Vic took the Eagles job. I think Vic might have
- 3:28Speaker 2: been on five head coaching lists, like they all submitted.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I was talking to a coaching agent who got wind
- 3:33Speaker 2: of this, and he said, you won't believe this. And
- 3:35Speaker 2: I don't even represent some of these guys, but the
- 3:37Speaker 2: clubs told me that they all put Fanju on their
- 3:40Speaker 2: list to be their defensive coordinator. Well, he's only one person.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You can't duplicate him. But yeah, so with day Ball,
- 3:50Speaker 2: I'm not saying he used the Eagles. He he talked
- 3:53Speaker 2: to them, so he had some interest. But I think
- 3:57Speaker 2: what happened was that tend of he showed him a
- 4:00Speaker 2: lot of love. He also interviewed for the head coaching
- 4:02Speaker 2: job last Friday, and they showed him a lot of love.
- 4:04Speaker 2: They put the full court press on him. But obviously
- 4:07Speaker 2: he's from Western New York, this is the be a dream.
- 4:11Speaker 2: How could he? Hew could if if he wants it.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Being off for the job, obviously he's going to take
- 4:14Speaker 2: it right, you know, right. But now he's he's a
- 4:18Speaker 2: really sharp guy. I just I argue whether he should
- 4:22Speaker 2: be a head coach with his temper and the way
- 4:24Speaker 2: he handled himself. But as a schemer and designer, one
- 4:28Speaker 2: of the things I love about that guy. This is
- 4:29Speaker 2: what we talked about last week, is that you can't
- 4:33Speaker 2: just peg him. Oh well, he's this scheme. No, he
- 4:36Speaker 2: runs some of McDaniels stuff, some of the Ron Airhart stuff.
- 4:40Speaker 2: That's where that's the Airheart offense is what McDaniels runs. Ye,
- 4:44Speaker 2: college concepts, you name it, he does it.
- 4:47Speaker 1: That was from Haley, right, that was from Haley.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And yes, yes spread spread stuff. He designed stuff for
- 4:53Speaker 2: the run the quarterback to run Hello Josh Allen he
- 4:56Speaker 2: Loo Jalen Hurts. So yeah, it would have been a
- 4:58Speaker 2: great match. I just felt it was probably not gonna
- 5:00Speaker 2: happen based on what was going on there. I give
- 5:03Speaker 2: Eagles credit for trying, but I I I understand the
- 5:08Speaker 2: center we have to acknowledge in social media because we
- 5:09Speaker 2: look at it like people don't want another Syriana guy.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I get that. I'm with you, although I've well a
- 5:17Speaker 2: little bit more on Jim Bob Kuter I was able
- 5:19Speaker 2: to talk to this where James Robert I like to
- 5:21Speaker 2: call him.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I just think he's gonna have to go by JBC
- 5:24Speaker 1: if he comes here to get any sort of cred
- 5:26Speaker 1: with the fan base, he's just gonna have to be easy.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I know you're not in Arkansas, what are you doing?
- 5:31Speaker 2: But but but anyway, uh, he's he's we'll get to
- 5:36Speaker 2: him in a couple of minutes, but we'll get to
- 5:38Speaker 2: Naggy in a sec. But overall, Brian Dable is really good.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I just wish we would have downplayed for you for
- 5:45Speaker 2: more last week. I didn't want to lead people on.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I never said he behaving clim close to the Eagles.
- 5:48Speaker 2: So see he's on the list. They liked him right,
- 5:50Speaker 2: he knows the team, he knows Jaialen and coach him
- 5:52Speaker 2: for a small short time. It wasn't his decision to
- 5:54Speaker 2: bench him, by the way, it was Nick Saban. Hello.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So anyway, uh yeah, it's but just to move this
- 6:02Speaker 2: along here. When you have a list of offense Cordinaris,
- 6:07Speaker 2: you try to get four to six. You don't want
- 6:08Speaker 2: to have fifteen. He says. When you do that, then
- 6:11Speaker 2: you know guys, a lot of guys that turn you down. Okay,
- 6:13Speaker 2: McDaniel is a pipe dream. Never. We never believe it
- 6:16Speaker 2: was going to happen. I mean didn't even take the interview.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So if that tells you a lot, right, But Zach
- 6:22Speaker 2: Robinson's an interesting guy, better in your two than year one.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I still have some questions with him stylistically and schematically.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But one thing that I've learned from talking to Joe Banner,
- 6:31Speaker 2: who's a friend of our show. Joe taught me this
- 6:33Speaker 2: and or hours and hours of talks. You always have.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's not just by numbers. Joe brought analytics into the Eagles,
- 6:40Speaker 2: but he goes, you must evaluate an offensive coordinator. If
- 6:44Speaker 2: it's not number one of your lists, it's number two,
- 6:46Speaker 2: buys you such a personnel. We talk about matchups. Do
- 6:49Speaker 2: you know how to exploit matchups? Do you know how
- 6:51Speaker 2: to get a running back on the linebacker? That was
- 6:53Speaker 2: Joe's big thing. Brian Westbrook helow he Joe, and you know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: you could say what you want about Joe, but he's
- 6:59Speaker 2: a big tape guy. Too. There's a lot of things
- 7:00Speaker 2: I didn't know about him. You know, I peg him
- 7:02Speaker 2: before I really nw him. Was it the numbers guy?
- 7:04Speaker 2: But he taught me. He goes, no, dude, you got
- 7:06Speaker 2: to look at everything. You got to look at scheme
- 7:09Speaker 2: and design, personnel usage and do you develop the players?
- 7:14Speaker 2: And that to me, Zach Robinson like he got something
- 7:19Speaker 2: out of Kyle Pitts this season. I mean Kyle Pitts,
- 7:21Speaker 2: I just figured it was never gonna make it. He
- 7:22Speaker 2: just never became. He had some good years, but he
- 7:25Speaker 2: regressed and then all of a sudden he showed something
- 7:27Speaker 2: contract year. But he got it right with with Robinson
- 7:32Speaker 2: the running back number seven yep, yep.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Some of their biggest plays over the last five or
- 7:39Speaker 1: six weeks of the season when they were beating some
- 7:43Speaker 1: teams that people thought they were getting some big contributions
- 7:45Speaker 1: from David Sills of all people. Yeah, David, I mean
- 7:50Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins, who looked completely cooked, you know at the
- 7:53Speaker 1: end of the year before was able to throw the
- 7:55Speaker 1: ball and find some open guys. You know, and they
- 7:57Speaker 1: had some injuries because Drake London was out for quite
- 8:00Speaker 1: an injury, right, I figured out how to get the
- 8:02Speaker 1: ball to bejon in the passing I was I'm not
- 8:07Speaker 1: trying to be like Zach Robinson's pr guy. But there
- 8:09Speaker 1: were some, There was some. It was a bad year
- 8:11Speaker 1: for the Falcons, but certain parts of their offense were
- 8:14Speaker 1: surprisingly okay.
- 8:15Speaker 2: The players were starting to develop. It's pronounced bajon for
- 8:18Speaker 2: people want to know. It took me a year to
- 8:19Speaker 2: get it right. But yeah, but John Robinson number seven,
- 8:22Speaker 2: who's special? He's right now. For my money, I don't
- 8:25Speaker 2: have a lot, but for my money, he's the NFL's
- 8:27Speaker 2: best running back. But Drake Lennon developed under him, no
- 8:29Speaker 2: question about it. When he's been healthy as a player.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They thought they were drafting see and the power back
- 8:36Speaker 2: from b y U. What's what's the kids without looking Algiers?
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, he developed him.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Now did they use a fullback at all? Because he
- 8:47Speaker 1: is from the Shanahan tree Robinson, but I don't know,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I'm sorry, from the McVeigh tree, right, yes, yeah, yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 1: and they don't always use full that correct, okay my fault?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Yes, yes, but I know they.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Used a lot of pistol.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Well, now see some of that may have been I
- 9:03Speaker 2: know two years ago when Kirk was coming back from
- 9:05Speaker 2: the Achilles. They put him, well, they put him in
- 9:09Speaker 2: shotgun a lot. He was really not a shotgun quarterback,
- 9:11Speaker 2: but they did to help him out for mobility reasons.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Yep.
- 9:14Speaker 2: But I had my problems with Robinson year one. I
- 9:17Speaker 2: just think I was like, this is not this. This
- 9:18Speaker 2: guy's not very good. I understand it's his first year
- 9:20Speaker 2: and needs. You got to be patient. But he did
- 9:22Speaker 2: make progress. But he's one of those I know fans
- 9:26Speaker 2: roll their eyes. I get that, we feel you. He's
- 9:29Speaker 2: a developing coordinator. But again, West Coast, can you throw
- 9:32Speaker 2: with timing? He's not the McVeigh offense. And this is
- 9:36Speaker 2: where Shanahan McVeigh differ. Shanahan is totally timing and anticipation
- 9:43Speaker 2: that like, he's about his timings anticipation as a play
- 9:45Speaker 2: calin schemer we've probably ever seen, right, like his dad,
- 9:48Speaker 2: but even more so because look at rock Pardy. Rock
- 9:51Speaker 2: Perry cannot make it if he could, if he's not
- 9:54Speaker 2: timingsicipation that that's what he played. He has to play
- 9:56Speaker 2: that way. But sir Robinson, so you want to get
- 9:59Speaker 2: the naggy and whoever else?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, well, real quick though, I do want to circle
- 10:03Speaker 1: back on the questions that we're getting as far as
- 10:06Speaker 1: why would someone like Brian Dable bypass an opportunity. Let's
- 10:10Speaker 1: say Dabele does the head coaching job is obvious, why
- 10:13Speaker 1: would he want to go to Tennessee over Philadelphia? And
- 10:17Speaker 1: I just think people have to have some real honest
- 10:20Speaker 1: questions what the coordinators candidates certainly, but even fans or
- 10:24Speaker 1: Eagles fans looking at this and saying, there are some
- 10:27Speaker 1: questions right now about the Eagles, some of which we
- 10:30Speaker 1: have brought up already, as far as does the scheme
- 10:33Speaker 1: fit the person Does the scheme someone wants to run
- 10:35Speaker 1: fit the personnel that's been in place for four or
- 10:38Speaker 1: five years now, But also a smart candidate is going
- 10:42Speaker 1: into this and wondering, is AJ Brown on the team
- 10:46Speaker 1: next year? Is Lane Johnson healthy and playing next year?
- 10:50Speaker 1: Do the center and left guard? How does the team
- 10:53Speaker 1: feel about their ability to come back and play at
- 10:56Speaker 1: a level prior to that's is Dallas Goddard here next?
- 11:00Speaker 1: If Dallas got it and A J. Brown are not
- 11:02Speaker 1: part of the offense next year, this is not the
- 11:04Speaker 1: Eagles team that you've been thinking about for the last
- 11:06Speaker 1: three or four years. And especially if the offensive line
- 11:09Speaker 1: is beat up. So I'm not saying these are all absolute.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So what I'm saying is these are questions. And if
- 11:13Speaker 1: you can go to Tennessee right where the expectations are
- 11:17Speaker 1: very low, you just have to build up the Titans
- 11:20Speaker 1: offense and you get to work with the number one
- 11:22Speaker 1: overall pick quarterback. And if you win six games and
- 11:25Speaker 1: you know, score twenty two points a game next year,
- 11:27Speaker 1: you've done a good job, by.
- 11:29Speaker 2: The way, right, even if he doesn't get the Buffalo
- 11:33Speaker 2: job on. Just to take your point at a step further,
- 11:37Speaker 2: this is why you know, when Kellen Moore came to Philly,
- 11:40Speaker 2: Kellen Moore knew that if they won. Now you could
- 11:44Speaker 2: argue is the passing game wasn't very good, but the
- 11:46Speaker 2: run game sure as hell was. It was elite when
- 11:48Speaker 2: the best in NFL history, and Kellen he parlayed that
- 11:53Speaker 2: into a head coaching job. So I won a super Bowl.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Now, and it helped by the way that Kellen had
- 11:58Speaker 1: a good track record before, or that he had the
- 12:01Speaker 1: number one offenses in Dallas, and.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know the Twitter mob got Callando though,
- 12:06Speaker 2: but they were they didn't like Kellen because he would
- 12:08Speaker 2: do he would run some gadget stuff in the red
- 12:11Speaker 2: zone and would drive people out of their bleep in mind.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I would laugh. I'm like, geez, you guys, are I
- 12:15Speaker 2: get it?
- 12:16Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Patrula did that this year and it actually worked.
- 12:19Speaker 1: All the gadget stuff they.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Re with with Goddard. Yeah, with the pot past.
- 12:23Speaker 1: But yeah. So I'm just saying these are legit questions
- 12:25Speaker 1: about it.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Just show you know the job of a coaching agent.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Now that's more on this part would be on table,
- 12:31Speaker 2: but a good coaching agent will give specifics of the building.
- 12:36Speaker 2: See you love how he every you just talk to
- 12:39Speaker 2: any coaches work for the Eagles. The best thing will
- 12:42Speaker 2: say about how he is. There two things that are
- 12:44Speaker 2: dominant and which makes him the NFL's best Joe the manager.
- 12:48Speaker 2: He's relentless and proving the roster and and connected to
- 12:51Speaker 2: that is you're gonna have. He's not gonna stop until
- 12:56Speaker 2: he gets what he wants in terms of roster construction.
- 12:59Speaker 2: That's all you can ask for. I think coach would
- 13:02Speaker 2: sign up for. So I this is what I this
- 13:06Speaker 2: is kind of what I believe here and on your
- 13:08Speaker 2: point to finish this this part off with Dave on
- 13:10Speaker 2: anyone else who's kind of a veteran coach. Yes, they've
- 13:14Speaker 2: made that. Syriann is a very good head coach. There's
- 13:16Speaker 2: a little bit more venom now in social media against Syrianna.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I get that there. You know whatever, for whatever reason,
- 13:20Speaker 2: you just you can't make everybody happy. Despite five playoff appearance.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You guy's an idiot, he's a dope. You should see
- 13:26Speaker 2: our puppet comments. What's that he's a puppet?
- 13:29Speaker 1: He's right, yeah, yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 2: So five years of playoffs too, superwl apearances one super
- 13:35Speaker 2: Bowl ring. He stinks he's an idiot. Okay, that's fine.
- 13:38Speaker 2: You're look at America, so whatever the fuck you want,
- 13:40Speaker 2: use my language. But the guy's not an idiot. We
- 13:43Speaker 2: we've had Look, we've had our issues. We've called him
- 13:45Speaker 2: out with their offensive scheme. This is strictly based on
- 13:48Speaker 2: what the tape looks like from the people we speak with.
- 13:50Speaker 2: It's less of opinion. It's a fact when like twenty
- 13:53Speaker 2: people you and I have spoken to say pretty much
- 13:55Speaker 2: the same thing in their own way. You got to
- 13:57Speaker 2: go with it, you go, this is not a very
- 13:58Speaker 2: good scheme. Now, that's the other thing with Syria, I mean,
- 14:02Speaker 2: with Daball, he would he would have to bring in
- 14:04Speaker 2: his own thing. He did coach Hurts, so you think
- 14:07Speaker 2: that would have worked. But I think with Dave Ball
- 14:11Speaker 2: you said it best. A lot of questions if you
- 14:14Speaker 2: if you're any offensive coordinator, especially Vetter, not a younger
- 14:17Speaker 2: guys just looking for a job, you look at it
- 14:20Speaker 2: A J. Brown, that's a big one. You don't have
- 14:24Speaker 2: his you don't have his replacement.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Brown and Goddard is two thirds of the past.
- 14:27Speaker 2: He had a great year. I mean he's the thirty
- 14:29Speaker 2: one next week. But you talk about that, Lane shouted
- 14:34Speaker 2: what the hell happened to their offensive line? And from
- 14:36Speaker 2: talking to people work with day Ball, he's an obsessive
- 14:39Speaker 2: tape watcher m hm. So you would think like most
- 14:42Speaker 2: and I'm sure Kellen did the same thing. If you're
- 14:44Speaker 2: going to take this job, you're not going into your
- 14:46Speaker 2: if you have time. By the way, if you're not,
- 14:48Speaker 2: you know, if if you're if you didn't just losing
- 14:51Speaker 2: the playoffs last week and you didn't have come to
- 14:52Speaker 2: watch tape, that's a different thing. But if you he
- 14:55Speaker 2: was fired, what was he fired in October? November? Whatever
- 14:57Speaker 2: the hell?
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 14:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So anyway, long story, sal.
- 15:00Speaker 1: After that blown loss, I think to the U was
- 15:03Speaker 1: the Broncos.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Which long loss a you're talking about.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I know you had a ton but what the big
- 15:07Speaker 1: one right wasn't against the Broncos that they blew They
- 15:10Speaker 1: one of these.
- 15:12Speaker 2: So no, on your point, and I'm just extending it
- 15:14Speaker 2: and finishing it. That's a major issue. Now you go
- 15:18Speaker 2: to Tennessee. I know the owner, any Amy Adams trunk is,
- 15:22Speaker 2: she's very impulsive talking to people work for her. But
- 15:27Speaker 2: it doesn't mean they're not going to get three years
- 15:29Speaker 2: that Sala won't get at least three years with Michael Ganzi.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You gotta win. But I mean, is Nick going to
- 15:36Speaker 2: be in trouble if they don't make the playoffs this year?
- 15:37Speaker 1: Probably?
- 15:38Speaker 2: Yeah, just the way, just the way the season underachieved
- 15:42Speaker 2: if they think it did. So we'll see what happens.
- 15:47Speaker 2: But context is everything, man. There's not one just one
- 15:51Speaker 2: reason a person will take a job and not take
- 15:53Speaker 2: the job him or it's attractive to coach, but they're there.
- 15:59Speaker 2: They put the full repressed on dable in Tennessee. Is
- 16:01Speaker 2: what we've understood for a couple weeks. So we'll see
- 16:03Speaker 2: what happens.
- 16:04Speaker 1: By the way, a good a good agent I'm glad
- 16:06Speaker 1: you brought this up. A good agent for a coach.
- 16:09Speaker 1: There's nothing illegal or anti NFL rule or whatever about
- 16:13Speaker 1: an agent for a coach calling up an agent for
- 16:16Speaker 1: a player and saying, hey, your players on this team.
- 16:20Speaker 1: It's kind of looking strange. What's your feeling You're gonna
- 16:23Speaker 1: be there next year or you're not? You know like that.
- 16:26Speaker 1: That's just doing intel, you know, like that's what you
- 16:29Speaker 1: and I do every single day of the week. So
- 16:33Speaker 1: you just don't know what kind of answers are being
- 16:34Speaker 1: exchange and what kind of information people are getting. So
- 16:37Speaker 1: that's just all part of the process. But yeah, we
- 16:40Speaker 1: can we can go on from there. I just wanted
- 16:42Speaker 1: to point out some of the little things about the
- 16:44Speaker 1: Eagles offense that we haven't discussed that that factor into
- 16:47Speaker 1: the to the equation here. Matt Nagy was interviewed on
- 16:51Speaker 1: Tuesday for the Wednesday.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Wednesday Understanding Through Zoom. Oh Okay, the way I look
- 16:58Speaker 2: at it this way is right, mm hmm. If you're
- 17:02Speaker 2: getting a second interview, it's probably gonna be in person,
- 17:05Speaker 2: right if he gets one. Obviously they know him, he
- 17:07Speaker 2: knows Howie, he knows, probably the medical staff. He probably
- 17:12Speaker 2: knows some of the trainers and stuff you know, have
- 17:14Speaker 2: been there forever. So ook, it's a match. You know
- 17:17Speaker 2: where he's from, you know where he started his career. Yep,
- 17:20Speaker 2: his thing is interesting. I'm gonna bring this story up.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I'ven't brought this up easily five years, but you and
- 17:26Speaker 2: I live this. I know.
- 17:28Speaker 1: It's just this. Is this the day they tried to
- 17:30Speaker 1: sign him to a contract exactly?
- 17:32Speaker 2: No, No, that's a funny story. No, but I'm talking
- 17:34Speaker 2: about you. I'm talking about the one that really is interesting.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Twenty seventeen draft. We're working for the Fanatic. Oh yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 2: and you know you. You have me on you and
- 17:44Speaker 2: I hosted it coase is the draft coverage from Philly?
- 17:47Speaker 2: And you asked me to give me all your intel.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I'm like, you know, Evan Ingram, he's definitely going to
- 17:51Speaker 2: the first round. It's a little shaky, but I think
- 17:53Speaker 2: he's gonna go in the first round. He did, blah bla
- 17:55Speaker 2: blah blah blah blah. I said t Whisky should go
- 17:57Speaker 2: by the end of the top ten. I don't know.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I was earlier that week. I was on the week before,
- 18:04Speaker 2: I was on NFL Live and I said.
- 18:05Speaker 1: All right, that's right. We did the show together by
- 18:08Speaker 1: the Yeah, yeah I did.
- 18:09Speaker 2: We did. No, we did the gain. And I said
- 18:11Speaker 2: to Bill Pauline, I said, I'm just telling you Bill,
- 18:13Speaker 2: he's going to the top ten. And Bill blew a stack.
- 18:15Speaker 2: He's like, that's ridiculous. He wouldn't get man to me
- 18:16Speaker 2: goes he's just not there yet. There's nothing in Trubisky's game.
- 18:21Speaker 2: I think he might have started. I felt I don't
- 18:22Speaker 2: have it in front of me, but maybe one year plus,
- 18:25Speaker 2: which is not enough. The history of quarterbacks starting less
- 18:28Speaker 2: than like fifteen games, the success rate going back fifty
- 18:32Speaker 2: or six extremely low. And that was Bill's point. So
- 18:35Speaker 2: you turned me. Did they make the trade with the Niners?
- 18:41Speaker 1: Yeah? So what happened was they they they just went
- 18:46Speaker 1: up one. They gave up all this draft bounty to
- 18:48Speaker 1: go from what like four to three or three to two,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and then it was over the Niners.
- 18:53Speaker 2: And we kept saying, well, you said no, you said
- 18:58Speaker 2: to something we were gonna break. We gotta go back on.
- 19:00Speaker 2: You know, I'm like, I have no idea I have
- 19:03Speaker 2: who you could have put, Like I would say, the
- 19:08Speaker 2: Hurts pick in twenty twenty was a bigger surprise than
- 19:10Speaker 2: me because I couldn't I couldn't compete. I'm like, this
- 19:12Speaker 2: is ridiculous. What like that? You know, it took me
- 19:14Speaker 2: like forty eight hours to calm down just to try
- 19:16Speaker 2: to figure what the hell happened. But this one I
- 19:20Speaker 2: turn to you, dude, I'm flum mixed. I have no idea,
- 19:23Speaker 2: Like this is ridiculous. Yeah, honestly, Like I couldn't find
- 19:26Speaker 2: anyone a really Tubisky to me was like Kevin Cobb
- 19:30Speaker 2: or like a second round quarterback. Like he he was
- 19:32Speaker 2: an athlete, above average, arms, nothing special, processing wasn't great.
- 19:38Speaker 2: He's a guy who want to bring along slowly. And
- 19:41Speaker 2: then somehow, by the grace of God, they made the
- 19:43Speaker 2: playoffs in twenty eighteen with Naggie in his first year.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I'm like, how that's what got him Coach of the Year, right,
- 19:49Speaker 2: and then things regressed and you know, Mac gave a
- 19:52Speaker 2: play call, took it back, couldn't figure it out. It
- 19:55Speaker 2: just they couldn't get not that anyone could to get
- 19:58Speaker 2: Mitch to play at a competent qu like the first
- 20:00Speaker 2: year though, I was like, I can't believe it was
- 20:03Speaker 2: like maybe twenty four touchdowns and twelve picks, but you
- 20:05Speaker 2: saw some really good football. I'm like, wow, a lot
- 20:08Speaker 2: of people look wrong right now, but you got to good.
- 20:10Speaker 2: It's only one year, right, that's the point.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, that was crazy. I'm like, I kept saying
- 20:16Speaker 1: the only reason he would trade from three to two
- 20:19Speaker 1: over the Niners, who weren't going to take a quarterback
- 20:22Speaker 1: they took Solomon Thomas that year was if you thought
- 20:24Speaker 1: another team was going to trade. Oh, the brown too,
- 20:29Speaker 1: And yeah, later came out to the Browns were like
- 20:31Speaker 1: thinking about it. I don't know if they were definitely
- 20:33Speaker 1: gonna do it, but either way, that was interesting. So yeah,
- 20:37Speaker 1: so that's back to Nagy. He does go twelve and
- 20:39Speaker 1: four in his first year and he wins NFC Coach
- 20:41Speaker 1: of the Year, but his the Eagles need a play caller,
- 20:44Speaker 1: like a proven play caller, and he himself called place
- 20:48Speaker 1: for two years, didn't do. He must not have loved
- 20:50Speaker 1: how he did. Then he gave it to Bill Laser,
- 20:52Speaker 1: his offensive coordinator, in year three, then he took it back,
- 20:55Speaker 1: and then he gave it back to Bill in year
- 20:57Speaker 1: four when they were on justin fields. So I don't know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: it almost sounds like Nick Sirianni ish you know, like
- 21:02Speaker 1: I have play call on now, I'm just giving it back.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Brian Dable did that with Mike Kafka, so I get it. Familiarity.
- 21:09Speaker 1: He's coming from a great coaching tree. Obviously he did
- 21:12Speaker 1: have some success as a head coach early one year.
- 21:17Speaker 1: But again you're looking, you're looking for a proven play call.
- 21:22Speaker 1: You've made this point a thousand times, right, and it's
- 21:25Speaker 1: it's fair. This offense doesn't just need a little tinkering
- 21:29Speaker 1: here and there. It needs a reset, a new vision,
- 21:34Speaker 1: a better scheme. And it's not that I doubt Matt
- 21:38Speaker 1: Naggy can. Naggie can bring like a better schemer or
- 21:41Speaker 1: Andy Reid concept, but you also have to be able
- 21:42Speaker 1: to apply it and coach it, and you'd like to
- 21:45Speaker 1: have someone who's proven to be able to have done that.
- 21:47Speaker 1: But again, you know, you also have to work with
- 21:49Speaker 1: the pool that's available exactly.
- 21:52Speaker 2: So there's you know, I look at some of the
- 21:57Speaker 2: names out there that are out there actually available, and
- 22:02Speaker 2: they go, look, you can find words than anyone. That's
- 22:04Speaker 2: the thing. You could you could dig in and go
- 22:06Speaker 2: well he was good here, and not hear what happened?
- 22:08Speaker 2: You know, you always have to have context what happened. Yes,
- 22:11Speaker 2: that that's a big thing for me because I don't
- 22:13Speaker 2: It's just you see the Twitter mob go after these
- 22:17Speaker 2: these coaches and they don't they have no contexts. Because
- 22:19Speaker 2: someone says something. We'll show a film clip, you see.
- 22:22Speaker 2: This is terrible concept. What happens is it goes viral, right,
- 22:26Speaker 2: and then people start believing it. They don't know anything
- 22:28Speaker 2: about the personnel that the coach work with, if the
- 22:31Speaker 2: if the quarterback couldn't process well, like, they don't want
- 22:33Speaker 2: to hear about They don't want to learn football. They
- 22:35Speaker 2: just want to go buy what the Twitter mob says.
- 22:37Speaker 2: They just go with that. That's not what we do here.
- 22:40Speaker 2: We never have, never will we try to separate fact
- 22:42Speaker 2: from fiction. H You make a fair point, like Naggie
- 22:46Speaker 2: Year one brought a lot of Anie Reid's concepts, his
- 22:48Speaker 2: version of it. He got Trubisky playing well, good coaching,
- 22:52Speaker 2: and then the offense agressed. He just couldn't get it
- 22:55Speaker 2: right now. Yeah, and it's Mitch Trubisky. No one's being
- 22:57Speaker 2: able to get it right with Mitch. That's you know,
- 22:59Speaker 2: that's just the way it is. He was severely overdrafted
- 23:03Speaker 2: and that that cost him his job. You just couldn't
- 23:05Speaker 2: get he just could not get him to play the
- 23:07Speaker 2: right way. I give him credit for giving up to
- 23:09Speaker 2: play calling, but on your point, to move this along,
- 23:13Speaker 2: they need somebody now. I love what he did the
- 23:16Speaker 2: first year. Was it did the league figure it out?
- 23:21Speaker 1: Or is it just.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Trubisky just could not get the job that it was
- 23:23Speaker 2: a combination.
- 23:24Speaker 1: That's yeah. I mean then the poor guy had Field,
- 23:27Speaker 1: who also is a quarterback that nobody else seemed to
- 23:30Speaker 1: got to play at a high level either. So I
- 23:33Speaker 1: feel like though the wild card here is still Cliff Kingsbury,
- 23:36Speaker 1: who's kind of out there and you're wondering what his
- 23:39Speaker 1: next move is going to be. We've detailed in the past,
- 23:42Speaker 1: you know, the egos event interested in him, why it
- 23:44Speaker 1: didn't work out, But he could be, you know this
- 23:47Speaker 1: many years later, looking at a position differently, looking at
- 23:51Speaker 1: the next job differently. But he is certainly if you're
- 23:54Speaker 1: if you're if you're looking for someone who you think
- 23:56Speaker 1: can really work with the current personnel and spice up
- 23:59Speaker 1: the scheme. That's a good name. I mean, that's not
- 24:02Speaker 1: one of those like when you you you're right, if
- 24:04Speaker 1: you go through like Zach Robinson and Bobby Slowick and
- 24:07Speaker 1: some of these other got Mike Kafka, there's gonna be
- 24:09Speaker 1: an asterisk, right, there's gonna be a but I don't
- 24:12Speaker 1: know or but he's kind of struggled here or didn't
- 24:15Speaker 1: have it there. I feel like with Kingsbury the asterisk
- 24:17Speaker 1: might be can it? Can he everybody? But yeah, I.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Know Dan Quinn did not see eye eyes are understanding
- 24:24Speaker 2: of that one, you know, looking into it. He did
- 24:26Speaker 2: a really good job. I could not believe what he
- 24:28Speaker 2: got out of the run game. That was the stunning thing.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I'm like, how the hell with that? Those group, that
- 24:32Speaker 2: group of backs right, Ekler got hurt. He towards Achilles
- 24:35Speaker 2: very early. He went with committee and they were committed
- 24:39Speaker 2: to it. He's the best name of the list. He's
- 24:41Speaker 2: really good. Yeah. And the thing that Greg and I
- 24:44Speaker 2: talked about last week when we broke down all the coordinators,
- 24:46Speaker 2: not all, we broke down like five guys, he was
- 24:48Speaker 2: the one where you go he talk about evolving. He
- 24:52Speaker 2: came in with his the tight ends don't matter offense,
- 24:56Speaker 2: they started matter a little bit now. Zach Ertz got
- 24:59Speaker 2: the ball. Ben Sinnett is not. He's just they overdrafted him.
- 25:02Speaker 2: He just overdrafted. He hasn't done anything, and he probably won't.
- 25:06Speaker 2: It's two seasons unless he pulls off a Jordan Davis improvement.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I don't say it, you know, but Kingsbury is just
- 25:13Speaker 2: he just does a lot of cool things. And you
- 25:16Speaker 2: saw Jane Daniels just develop with him.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Screen game, baby, I would get excited if anybody's going
- 25:21Speaker 1: to bring a screen game back to the Philadelphia.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Ye don't get me, I said Mike gils Show last
- 25:27Speaker 2: week at Football four game. Like the seven things that
- 25:30Speaker 2: they got had I didn't. I put it in my
- 25:33Speaker 2: top three. It's probably number one. It's just that they
- 25:35Speaker 2: the lowest screen rate in the NFL this past season.
- 25:37Speaker 2: How the hell has that happened? I don't on don't
- 25:40Speaker 2: don't give me hurts this one. That's bullshit. Yeah, don't
- 25:43Speaker 2: get me hurts one. Check it down. That it's a
- 25:45Speaker 2: play call. That's that's like, you're right, that's a screen like,
- 25:49Speaker 2: come on, man, Yeah, geez.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Well maybe if they actually add a true slot receiver.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:57Speaker 1: By the way, Johan Dotson is also a free agent.
- 25:59Speaker 1: So if you don't have Brown and Dotson back and
- 26:02Speaker 1: got her back, you're you're talking about four fifths of
- 26:06Speaker 1: your passing game that is not going to be back.
- 26:08Speaker 1: It's very very interesting. All right, let's send it on
- 26:10Speaker 1: this Eagle signed a They brought back a guy they had,
- 26:13Speaker 1: Jahim Bell, the tight end they signed into a future deal.
- 26:17Speaker 1: He was with the team for a little bit last year.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I'm I guess I'm just surprised because i mean, listen,
- 26:22Speaker 1: it's not like he's making the team definitively, but I
- 26:24Speaker 1: would have thought they'd start to focus on some blocking
- 26:27Speaker 1: tight ends to get their run game back. If you're
- 26:30Speaker 1: going to have a few guys on the practice squad
- 26:32Speaker 1: or competing for a third tight end job with E. J. Jenkins, right,
- 26:35Speaker 1: you wanted to see some blockers. But this is another
- 26:38Speaker 1: sort of undersized pass catching tight end.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Yeah. He had an injury I think in high school
- 26:44Speaker 2: at an ACL then he Yeah, his numbers were okay
- 26:48Speaker 2: in college but South Carolina for state. But he did
- 26:52Speaker 2: get drafted by the Patriots and twenty four.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, he played a game, played a game or two
- 26:58Speaker 1: he played, he got on the field for them.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, he just has really not done anything yet.
- 27:04Speaker 2: But he's an undersized move tight end. So he's the
- 27:09Speaker 2: guy that they're gonna put in their offseason program and
- 27:11Speaker 2: go from there. But we that toight end possession is
- 27:13Speaker 2: so Barren Calculters also a free agent, So I mean
- 27:19Speaker 2: they got a lot of work to doing. Man, this
- 27:20Speaker 2: roster all of a sudden needs work.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he played fifty he was mostly special teams, but
- 27:26Speaker 1: he did have two catches for twenty yards his rookie year,
- 27:29Speaker 1: playing fifteen games. But yeah, they they got work to do.
- 27:32Speaker 1: And I think that once we get past this OC search, Adam,
- 27:35Speaker 1: we are really going to have to dive in when
- 27:37Speaker 1: we do our roster review and our kind of preview
- 27:41Speaker 1: of how this offense is going to look in twenty
- 27:44Speaker 1: six because it could look radically from a personnel standpoint,
- 27:48Speaker 1: radically different if certain guys that we just talked about
- 27:52Speaker 1: aren't even if half of them aren't back. So that's
- 27:55Speaker 1: interesting and I really look forward to getting And you
- 27:57Speaker 1: you heard I'll end it on this. You heard what
- 27:59Speaker 1: Hallie Roseman said the US conference that he said we
- 28:02Speaker 1: have a lot of homegrown offensive players under big contracts
- 28:06Speaker 1: because we drafted them and we signed them, and we're
- 28:08Speaker 1: happy about that. They're part of our success. But looking forward,
- 28:12Speaker 1: we now have that same. He said, we now have
- 28:14Speaker 1: it on defense. We got a lot of good, young, core,
- 28:18Speaker 1: homegrown guys that are going to have to I think
- 28:21Speaker 1: the word he said was we can't let them go.
- 28:23Speaker 1: And you know he's talking about he's talking about Jill
- 28:24Speaker 1: and Carter and Jordan Davis and Quinna Mitchell and Cooper
- 28:28Speaker 1: dejan Right. Uh so those are guys that are gonna
- 28:31Speaker 1: have to get paid, and that means the offense is
- 28:33Speaker 1: probably going to have to change a little bit. So
- 28:36Speaker 1: we'll sell the draft picks.
- 28:37Speaker 2: They got a lot of well, you know, we'll get
- 28:38Speaker 2: we'll get into off season stuff soon. But how he's
- 28:41Speaker 2: got a lot of draft picks, a lot of draft capital.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I know he's traded some away, you know last year. Yeah,
- 28:46Speaker 2: but they've got a lot of They got a whole
- 28:48Speaker 2: depth issues. It's not going to be easy. But how
- 28:51Speaker 2: he's so resilient. It's what makes him great. It wasn't
- 28:54Speaker 2: always like that. I guess you learned from me mistakes
- 28:57Speaker 2: and he correct them. But yeah, the guys relentless. I mean,
- 29:00Speaker 2: it's just we'll see what happened.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 30:11Speaker 1: If you're looking for a home alarm system, that's easy
- 30:14Speaker 1: to understand, reliable, and actually tells you when there's an
- 30:17Speaker 1: intruder who's not already in your home. I got just
- 30:19Speaker 1: the system for you. Let me introduce you to simply
- 30:22Speaker 1: Safe Home Security. It's simply the most technologically advanced home
- 30:26Speaker 1: alarm system available, and it actually keeps the trouble away
- 30:29Speaker 1: instead of telling you when something bad has already happened.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Simply Safe stops crimes before they start, using AI powered
- 30:36Speaker 1: cameras outside your home. Simply Safe sets itself apart from
- 30:40Speaker 1: the other alarm systems because agents are taking action while

- 32:21Speaker 2: I think you made this point to me earlier wouldn't
- 32:23Speaker 2: be comical. I want to leave you with this is
- 32:25Speaker 2: John Harmon now is in the division. He's pretty pretty
- 32:28Speaker 2: damn good head coach. Yeah, and if I got Todd Mankins,
- 32:32Speaker 2: is O see what she's going to be is we
- 32:34Speaker 2: talked about a couple weeks ago, as long as you
- 32:35Speaker 2: don't get a head coaching job, what if they got
- 32:37Speaker 2: Sean McDermot as a decordinator. I love when you brought
- 32:39Speaker 2: that up. I'm like, oh my god, wow.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, you would think mc dermott will be
- 32:43Speaker 1: able to get a head coaching job, but you never
- 32:45Speaker 1: know sure. And if he doesn't, that would be a
- 32:48Speaker 1: place where you would see the you would connect the
- 32:50Speaker 1: dots and boy, that would be a heck of a
- 32:53Speaker 1: coaching start.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Should have him on his list. I mean, well, Sean,
- 32:56Speaker 2: I'll tell you what. And I know Brandon being done.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Want to hear it. And Terry Bagoli on it. Want
- 33:00Speaker 2: to hear it. They're not the most talented defense not
- 33:03Speaker 2: He's talk to anyone who covers the league who really understands,
- 33:06Speaker 2: or you talk to people work in the league, it's
- 33:09Speaker 2: they've kind of our achieve great coaching by Sean in
- 33:11Speaker 2: the scheme. He is good. He is. That could be
- 33:16Speaker 2: if they get because Moncan's really good. If they get
- 33:19Speaker 2: a good decordinator and they got they got to revamp
- 33:21Speaker 2: their quarterback group. Yeah, man, with that address group in
- 33:25Speaker 2: that front, all of a sudden, of course, the quarterback
- 33:29Speaker 2: got to take another step. But you got a chance
- 33:31Speaker 2: to be John's have a much They have a good
- 33:33Speaker 2: chance to be much improved.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Yeah. I think Coleman was found somewhere on a street
- 33:37Speaker 1: corner in Buffalo, bus tracks on his back as he
- 33:42Speaker 1: became like that was rough man, I was talking. I
- 33:46Speaker 1: know that the kids got to grow up and do better,
- 33:48Speaker 1: but like you protect your guys no matter what you don't.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Well, the the owner cannot do that for folks. If
- 33:57Speaker 2: you didn't see it or didn't hear about it. Terry Bugold,
- 34:01Speaker 2: who's a wonderful man, by the way, I have a
- 34:02Speaker 2: ton of respect for him, But an owner should not
- 34:06Speaker 2: be talking about who made the pick and saying, oh, well,
- 34:10Speaker 2: he just wanted he didn't want to do the right thing,
- 34:11Speaker 2: so he drafted him for the for the uh, for
- 34:13Speaker 2: the coaches.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Right Coleman, especially in a negative light like that, right,
- 34:18Speaker 1: how would you say.
- 34:19Speaker 2: It's like, here's another one when Chip Kelly when he
- 34:23Speaker 2: abandoned Marcus Smith in terms of oh, I didn't make
- 34:26Speaker 2: I don't. I didn't. I didn't draft him. Why would
- 34:28Speaker 2: you like? No? You? I know, I remember asking someone
- 34:31Speaker 2: in their front office. Not only they ran it by him,
- 34:34Speaker 2: they had to, hey, what are your thoughts? This is
- 34:36Speaker 2: where we want to go. He said yes, m m see.
- 34:39Speaker 2: He didn't have control. But you're not gonna Howie. One
- 34:41Speaker 2: of the things he's also improved on, he he doesn't
- 34:45Speaker 2: you're not any good. GM will not draft a player
- 34:47Speaker 2: the coaches don't want you just don't do that.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:50Speaker 2: So the fact that Brandon be drafted a player that
- 34:54Speaker 2: was lower on their board because the players wanted them,
- 34:58Speaker 2: I mean, excuse me, the coaches wanted them over someone
- 35:00Speaker 2: who's higher on it. That's just absurd. That's just And
- 35:05Speaker 2: if it's one thing, if you did in the sixth round,
- 35:06Speaker 2: second round, get out here.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I know it's rough, it's rough, but anyway, listen, Like
- 35:12Speaker 1: I said last pod, I'll say it again this pod
- 35:14Speaker 1: to end it. There's gonna be a lot more information
- 35:17Speaker 1: coming out on inside the Birds throughout the week. I
