- 0:00Speaker 1: Given to animal luss until the land below the mountain
- 0:03Speaker 1: was filled with them. Chapter thirteen. Leamik the Blind lived
- 0:11Speaker 1: in those days. He was one of the sons of Cain.
- 0:14Speaker 1: He had a son whose name was a Tune, and
- 0:16Speaker 1: the two of them had many cattle. Lamek was in
- 0:19Speaker 1: the habit of sending them to graze with the young
- 0:20Speaker 1: shepherd who tended them. He was coming home in the
- 0:23Speaker 1: evening when he went to his grandfather, his father a Tune,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and his mother Hazena, and he wept, and he said
- 0:29Speaker 1: to them, I cannot feed those cattle alone, or some
- 0:32Speaker 1: one may rob me of some of them, or kill
- 0:34Speaker 1: me so they can take them, because among the children
- 0:36Speaker 1: of Cain there was a lot of robbery, murder and sin.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Then Lemik pitied him, and he said, you may be correct.
- 0:44Speaker 1: When you are alone, you might be overpowered by the
- 0:46Speaker 1: men of this place. So Lamik arose took a bow
- 0:49Speaker 1: he had kept ever since he was a youth, before
- 0:52Speaker 1: he became blind, and he took large arrows and smooth
- 0:55Speaker 1: stones and a sling which he had, and he went
- 0:58Speaker 1: to the field with the young shepherd and placed himself
- 1:00Speaker 1: behind the cattle, while the young shepherd watched the cattle.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Lemik did this for many days. Meanwhile, ever since God
- 1:07Speaker 1: had cast him off and had cursed him with trembling,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and had cursed him with trembling in fear, Cain could
- 1:13Speaker 1: not be still, settle nor find rest in any one place.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So he wandered from place to place, and his wanderings
- 1:20Speaker 1: he came to Lamik's wives and asked him about him.
- 1:23Speaker 1: They said to him, he is in the field with
- 1:25Speaker 1: the cattle. Then Kan went to look for him, And
- 1:28Speaker 1: as he came into the field, the young shepherd heard
- 1:30Speaker 1: the noise he made and the cattle herding together in
- 1:33Speaker 1: front of him. Then said he to Lamk, my lord,
- 1:36Speaker 1: is that a wild beast or a robber? And Lamik
- 1:40Speaker 1: said to him, tell me where he is when he
- 1:42Speaker 1: comes up. Then Lamik bent his bow, placed an arrow
- 1:45Speaker 1: on it, and fitted a stone in the sling. And
- 1:48Speaker 1: when Cain came out from the open country, the shepherd
- 1:51Speaker 1: said to Lamik, shoot, behold he is coming. Then Lamik
- 1:55Speaker 1: shot at Kin with his arrow and hit him in
- 1:57Speaker 1: his side. And Lamik struck him with a stone from
- 2:00Speaker 1: his sling, and the stone struck his face and knocked
- 2:02Speaker 1: out both his eyes. Then Kin fell dead instantly. Then
- 2:07Speaker 1: Lamik and the young shepherd came up to him and
- 2:09Speaker 1: found him lying on the ground, And the young shepherd
- 2:12Speaker 1: said to him, it is Kin, our grandfather, whom you
- 2:15Speaker 1: have killed. My lord. Then Lamik grieved in bitterness and regret,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and he clapped his hands together and struck the head
- 2:22Speaker 1: of the youth with his flat palm, and the youth
- 2:24Speaker 1: fell as if he were dead. But Lamik thought the
- 2:26Speaker 1: youth was pretending, so he took up a stone and
- 2:29Speaker 1: struck him and smashed his head until he died. Chapter fourteen.
- 2:37Speaker 1: When Enos was nine hundred years old, all the children
- 2:41Speaker 1: of Seth and of Canaan and his first born, with
- 2:43Speaker 1: their wives and children, gathered around him, asking for a
- 2:47Speaker 1: blessing from him. Then he prayed over them and blessed
- 2:49Speaker 1: them and made them promise them by the blood of
- 2:51Speaker 1: able to just saying to them, do not let even
- 2:54Speaker 1: one of your children go down from this holy mountain,
- 2:57Speaker 1: and do not let them make friends with the children
- 2:59Speaker 1: of Cain the murder. Then Inos called his son Canaan
- 3:02Speaker 1: and said to him, look, my son, and set your
- 3:04Speaker 1: heart on your people, and establish them in righteousness and
- 3:08Speaker 1: in innocence, and stand ministering before the body of our
- 3:11Speaker 1: father Adam all the days of your life. After this
- 3:15Speaker 1: Enos rested died he was nine hundred and eighty five
- 3:18Speaker 1: years old. Canaan wrapped him up and laid him in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the Cave of Treasures on the left of his father Adam,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and made offerings for him, following the custom of his
- 3:27Speaker 1: father's Chapter fifteen. After the death of Enos, Canaan led
- 3:36Speaker 1: his people in righteousness and innocence, as his father had
- 3:39Speaker 1: commanded him. He also continued to minister before the body
- 3:42Speaker 1: of Adam in the Cave of Treasures. Then, when he
- 3:45Speaker 1: had lived nine hundred and ten years, suffering and sickness
- 3:48Speaker 1: came upon him, And when he was about to enter
- 3:50Speaker 1: into rest die, all the fathers, with their wives and children,
- 3:54Speaker 1: came to him and earnestly urged them by the blood
- 3:56Speaker 1: of Abel the Just, saying to them, let no one
- 3:59Speaker 1: among you descend from this holy mountain, and do not
- 4:02Speaker 1: make friends with the children of Cain the murderer. Mahalalel,
- 4:06Speaker 1: his first born son, received this commandment from his father,
- 4:09Speaker 1: who blessed him and died. Then Mahaleel embalmed him with
- 4:12Speaker 1: sweet spices and laid him in the Cave of Treasures
- 4:16Speaker 1: with his fathers, and they made offerings for him, as
- 4:19Speaker 1: was the custom of their fathers Chapter sixteen. Then Mahalalel
- 4:26Speaker 1: led his people and fed them in righteousness and innocence,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and watched them to see they had no relationship with
- 4:31Speaker 1: the children of Cain. He also continued in the Cave
- 4:34Speaker 1: of Treasures, praying and ministering before the body of their
- 4:37Speaker 1: father Adam, asking God for mercy on himself and on
- 4:40Speaker 1: his people, until he was eight hundred and seventy years old,
- 4:44Speaker 1: when he fell sick. Then all his children gathered around
- 4:47Speaker 1: him to see him and to ask for his blessing
- 4:50Speaker 1: on them all before he left this world. Then Mahalalela
- 4:53Speaker 1: arose and sat on his bed, his tears streaming down
- 4:56Speaker 1: his face, and he called his eldest son, Jared, who
- 4:59Speaker 1: came to him. He then kissed his face and said
- 5:03Speaker 1: to him, Jared, my son, I solemnly urge you, by
- 5:06Speaker 1: Him who made heaven and earth, to watch over your
- 5:09Speaker 1: people and to feed them in righteousness and in innocence,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and not to let even one of them go down
- 5:15Speaker 1: from this holy mountain to the children of kin, or
- 5:18Speaker 1: he will perish with them here, my son, there will
- 5:22Speaker 1: come a great destruction upon this earth because of them.
- 5:25Speaker 1: God will be angry with the world and will destroy
- 5:28Speaker 1: them with waters. But I also know that your children
- 5:31Speaker 1: will not listen to you, and that they will go
- 5:33Speaker 1: down from this mountain and have relations with the children
- 5:36Speaker 1: of Cain, and that they shall perish with them. My son,
- 5:40Speaker 1: teach them and watch over them, so that no guilt
- 5:43Speaker 1: will be on you because of them. Mahlalloh continued saying
- 5:47Speaker 1: to his son Jared, when I die, embalm my body
- 5:50Speaker 1: and laid in the cave of Treasures by the bodies
- 5:52Speaker 1: of my forefathers. Then stand by my body and pray
- 5:56Speaker 1: to God and take care of them, and fulfill your
- 5:59Speaker 1: ministry before them until you enter and to rest yourself.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Mahalalel then blessed all his children. Then he lay down
- 6:06Speaker 1: on his bed and entered into rest like his father's.
- 6:10Speaker 1: But when Jared saw that his father Mahaleel was dead,
- 6:12Speaker 1: he wept and grieved and embraced and kissed his hands
- 6:15Speaker 1: in his feet, and so did all his children. And
- 6:18Speaker 1: his children embalmed him carefully and laid him by the
- 6:21Speaker 1: bodies of his father's Then they stood and mourned for
- 6:24Speaker 1: him forty days. Author's note, Mahalalel's way of adjuring Jared
- 6:29Speaker 1: his son was different informed from those before. He did
- 6:33Speaker 1: not invoke the name of Abel the just The results
- 6:36Speaker 1: were also different, and that it was at this time
- 6:39Speaker 1: the children of Abel first began to have intercourse with
- 6:42Speaker 1: the children of Cain Chapter seventeen. Then Jared kept his
- 6:50Speaker 1: father's commandment and arose like a lion over his people.
- 6:54Speaker 1: He fed them in righteousness and innocence, and commanded them
- 6:57Speaker 1: to do nothing without his consent. This was because he
- 7:00Speaker 1: was afraid for them that they should go to the
- 7:02Speaker 1: children of Cain. He gave them orders repeatedly and continued
- 7:07Speaker 1: to do so until the end of the four hundred
- 7:08Speaker 1: and eighty fifth year of his life. At the end
- 7:11Speaker 1: of these years, there came to him a sign. As
- 7:14Speaker 1: Jared was standing like a lion before the bodies of
- 7:16Speaker 1: his father's praying and warning his people, Satan envied him
- 7:21Speaker 1: and produced a beautiful specter. Because Jared would not let
- 7:24Speaker 1: his children do anything without his counsel, Satan appeared to
- 7:27Speaker 1: him with thirty men of his hosts in the form
- 7:30Speaker 1: of handsome men. Satan himself was the oldest and tallest
- 7:33Speaker 1: among them, with a fine beard. They stood at the
- 7:36Speaker 1: mouth of the cave and called out Jared, who was
- 7:39Speaker 1: in the cave. He came out to them and found
- 7:41Speaker 1: them looking like handsome men, full of light, and very beautiful.
- 7:46Speaker 1: He was in awe of their beauty and their looks,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and wondered to himself whether they might not be of
- 7:50Speaker 1: the children of Cain. He said also in his heart,
- 7:54Speaker 1: the children of Cain cannot come up to the height
- 7:56Speaker 1: of this mountain, and none of them are this handsome
- 7:58Speaker 1: as these appear to be. And among these men there
- 8:02Speaker 1: is not one of my kindred, so they must be strangers.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Then Jared exchanged a greeting with them, and he said
- 8:08Speaker 1: to the oldest among them, my father, tell me how
- 8:11Speaker 1: you are so wonderful, and tell me who these are
- 8:14Speaker 1: with you. They looked to me like strange men. Then
- 8:17Speaker 1: the oldest began to weep, and the rest wept with him.
- 8:20Speaker 1: And he said to Jared, I am Adam, whom God
- 8:23Speaker 1: made first, and this is able, And this is able
- 8:26Speaker 1: my son who was killed by his brother Cain, whose
- 8:29Speaker 1: heart was influenced by Satan to murder, And this is
- 8:32Speaker 1: my son Seth whom I asked the Lord to give
- 8:34Speaker 1: me to comfort when I no longer had able. Then
- 8:37Speaker 1: this one is my son Enos, son of Seth, and
- 8:40Speaker 1: that other one is Canaan, son of Enos, and that
- 8:43Speaker 1: other one is Mahalala, son of Canaan, your father. But
- 8:47Speaker 1: Jared remained wondering at their appearance and at the words
- 8:50Speaker 1: of the elder to him. Then the oldest said to him,
- 8:54Speaker 1: do not stand there in awe, my son. We now
- 8:57Speaker 1: live in the land of the north, of the garden
- 8:59Speaker 1: which God created for the world. He would not let
- 9:02Speaker 1: us live there, but placed us inside the garden below
- 9:05Speaker 1: which you were now living. After I transgressed, he made
- 9:08Speaker 1: me come out of it, and I was left to
- 9:10Speaker 1: live in this cave. That was when great and horrible
- 9:13Speaker 1: troubles came on me, And when the time of my
- 9:15Speaker 1: death drew near, I commanded my son's Seth to tend
- 9:18Speaker 1: his people well. And my commandment is to be handed
- 9:21Speaker 1: from one to another to the end of the generations
- 9:24Speaker 1: to come. But Jared, my son, we live in beautiful regions,
- 9:27Speaker 1: while you live here in misery. Your father Mahal'lo informed
- 9:31Speaker 1: me that a great flood would come and overwhelm the
- 9:33Speaker 1: whole earth. Therefore, my son, fearing for your sakes, I
- 9:38Speaker 1: rose and took my children with me and came here
- 9:40Speaker 1: to visit you and your children. I found you standing
- 9:43Speaker 1: in this cave, weeping, and your children scattered about this
- 9:46Speaker 1: mountain and the heat and in misery. But my son,
- 9:49Speaker 1: as we missed our way and came as far as this,
- 9:52Speaker 1: we found other men below this mountain, who inhabit a
- 9:55Speaker 1: beautiful country, full of trees and of fruits, and of
- 9:58Speaker 1: all manner, of lush, green vegel. It is like a garden.
- 10:02Speaker 1: When we found them, we thought they were you, until
- 10:04Speaker 1: your father, Mahalelau, told me they were no such thing. Now,
- 10:09Speaker 1: my son, listen to my advice and go down to them,
- 10:12Speaker 1: you and your children. You will rest from all this
- 10:15Speaker 1: suffering you are in. If you will not go down
- 10:18Speaker 1: to them, then arise, take your children, and come with
- 10:21Speaker 1: us to our garden. There you shall live in our
- 10:24Speaker 1: beautiful land, and you shall rest from all this trouble
- 10:27Speaker 1: which you and your children are now living in. But
- 10:30Speaker 1: when he heard these words from the oldest, Jared was
- 10:33Speaker 1: confused and went here and there, But at that moment
- 10:36Speaker 1: he found none of his children. Then he answered and
- 10:39Speaker 1: said to the old one, why have you hidden yourselves
- 10:41Speaker 1: until this day? And the oldest replied, if your father
- 10:45Speaker 1: had not told us, we would not have known it.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Then Jared believed his words were true, so that oldest
- 10:51Speaker 1: said to Jared, wherefore did you turn about so and so?
- 10:55Speaker 1: And he said, I was seeking one of my children
- 10:58Speaker 1: to tell him about my going with you and about
- 11:00Speaker 1: their coming down to those about whom you have spoken
- 11:02Speaker 1: to me. When the old One heard Jared's intention, he
- 11:05Speaker 1: said to him, do not worry about that right now,
- 11:08Speaker 1: but come with us, and you shall see our country.
- 11:11Speaker 1: If the land in which we live pleases you, we
- 11:13Speaker 1: shall all return here and take your family with us.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But if our country does not please you, you shall
- 11:20Speaker 1: come back to your own home. And the old one
- 11:22Speaker 1: urged Jared to go before one of his children came
- 11:25Speaker 1: to talk him out of his decision. Jared then came
- 11:28Speaker 1: out of the cave and went with them and among them,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and they comforted him until they came to the top
- 11:33Speaker 1: of the mountain of the Sons of Cain. Then the
- 11:35Speaker 1: old one said to one of his companions, we have
- 11:38Speaker 1: forgotten something by the mouth of the cave, and that
- 11:40Speaker 1: is the chosen garment we had brought to clothe Jared with.
- 11:43Speaker 1: He then said to one of them one, if you
- 11:45Speaker 1: go back, and we will wait for you here until
- 11:47Speaker 1: you come back, then we will clothe Jared, and he
- 11:51Speaker 1: shall be like us, good, handsome, and fit to come
- 11:54Speaker 1: with us into our country. Then that one went back,
- 11:58Speaker 1: But when he was a short distance off, the old
- 12:00Speaker 1: one called to him and said to him, you stay
- 12:03Speaker 1: there until I come up and speak to you. Then
- 12:05Speaker 1: he stood still, and the old one went up to
- 12:08Speaker 1: him and said to him, one thing we forgot at
- 12:10Speaker 1: the cave. It is this we forgot, to put out
- 12:13Speaker 1: the lamp that burns inside the cave above the bodies
- 12:16Speaker 1: that are in there. Do it and come back to
- 12:19Speaker 1: us quickly. That one went, and the old one came
- 12:22Speaker 1: back to his fellows and to Jared. And they came
- 12:24Speaker 1: down from the mountain, and Jared was with them, and
- 12:27Speaker 1: they stayed by a fountain of water near the houses
- 12:30Speaker 1: of the children of Cain, and waited for their companion
- 12:33Speaker 1: until he brought the garment for Jared. Then he who
- 12:36Speaker 1: went back to the cave, put out the lamp and
- 12:38Speaker 1: came to them, and brought an apparition with him. And
- 12:41Speaker 1: showed it to them, And when Jared saw it, he
- 12:44Speaker 1: wondered at the beauty and grace thereof and rejoiced in
- 12:46Speaker 1: his heart, believing it was all true. But while they
- 12:49Speaker 1: were staying there, three of them went into the houses
- 12:52Speaker 1: of the sons of Cain and said to them, bring
- 12:54Speaker 1: us to day some food by the fountain of water
- 12:57Speaker 1: for us and our companions to eat. When the sons
- 13:00Speaker 1: of Cain saw them, they were in awe at them,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and thought, these men are beautiful to look at. We
- 13:05Speaker 1: have never seen such before. So they rose and came
- 13:08Speaker 1: with them to the fountain of water to see their companions.
- 13:11Speaker 1: They thought them so very handsome that they called aloud
- 13:14Speaker 1: about their places for others to gather together and come
- 13:17Speaker 1: and look at these beautiful beings. Then they gathered around them,
- 13:21Speaker 1: both men and women. Then the old One said to them,
- 13:24Speaker 1: we are strangers in your land. Bring us some good
- 13:27Speaker 1: food and drink, And bring yourselves and your women, so
- 13:30Speaker 1: we can entertain refresh ourselves with you. When those men
- 13:34Speaker 1: heard these words of the old One, every one of
- 13:37Speaker 1: Cain's sons brought his wife, and another brought his daughter,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and so many women came to them, everyone calling out
- 13:44Speaker 1: to Jared, either for himself or for his wife. But
- 13:48Speaker 1: when Jared saw what they did, his very soul wrenched
- 13:50Speaker 1: itself from them, and he would not taste their food
- 13:53Speaker 1: or their drink. The Old One saw him as he
- 13:56Speaker 1: wrenched himself from them, and said to him, do not
- 13:59Speaker 1: be sad. I am the great elder. As you shall
- 14:01Speaker 1: see me, do do yourself in like manner. Then he
- 14:05Speaker 1: spread his hands and took one of the women, and
- 14:07Speaker 1: five of his companions did the same in front of Jared,
- 14:10Speaker 1: that he should do as they did. But when Jared
- 14:12Speaker 1: saw them doing their wickedness, he wept and said, in
- 14:14Speaker 1: his mind, my fathers never acted like this. He then
- 14:18Speaker 1: spread his hands and prayed with a fervent heart and
- 14:20Speaker 1: with much weeping, and begged God to deliver him from
- 14:23Speaker 1: their hands. No sooner did Jered begin to pray, than
- 14:26Speaker 1: the Old One fled with his companions, for they could
- 14:29Speaker 1: not abide in a place of prayer. Then Jared turned round,
- 14:32Speaker 1: but could not see them, but found himself standing in
- 14:34Speaker 1: the midst of the children of Cain. He then wept
- 14:37Speaker 1: and said, O, God, do not destroy me with this
- 14:40Speaker 1: race concerning which my fathers have warned me. For now,
- 14:44Speaker 1: My Lord God, I was thinking that those who appeared
- 14:46Speaker 1: to me were my forefathers. But I have found them
- 14:49Speaker 1: out to be devils who lured me by way of
- 14:51Speaker 1: this beautiful apparition until I believed them. But now I
- 14:55Speaker 1: ask you, o, God, to deliver me from this race
- 14:58Speaker 1: among whom I am now staying as you did. Deliver
- 15:01Speaker 1: me from those devils. Send your angel to pour me
- 15:04Speaker 1: out of the middle of them. I do not have
- 15:06Speaker 1: the power within myself to escape from among them. When
- 15:09Speaker 1: Jared had ended his prayer, God sent his angel into
- 15:12Speaker 1: the middle of them, and he took Jared and set
- 15:14Speaker 1: him high up on the mountain and showed him the way,
- 15:17Speaker 1: and he gave him wise advice, and then departed from him.
