- 0:17I'm Jessica. And this is ATC presents there.
- 0:20Bunky Rambles for a couple of friends review Korean dramas,
- 0:23except it is just me today. Rico did not watch the show that
- 0:27we're going to talk about today. Welcome everyone.
- 0:31To this very special episode of daebak.
- 0:33He Rambles we are on Hiatus right now.
- 0:36Season 2 is going to drop early 2022.
- 0:39So be on the lookout for that. But there was a massive upheaval
- 0:43in the world of kdrama with regards to a Netflix show that
- 0:47has taken the World by storm and so me and my special guests,
- 0:51today are going to talk through squid game.
- 0:54Rico has a brother and his brother's name is Miguel and
- 0:59Miguel. Is here with me today.
- 1:01It's talk about squid game. Welcome Miguel.
- 1:04Thanks very much for having me, especially for squid game.
- 1:07Here we go. Yeah, this kind of came about
- 1:12because I was starting squid game and just before I started
- 1:16it you were texting me about squid game.
- 1:19And so I was like, oh my God, Miguel's watching, squid game.
- 1:23So, I got very excited. We really didn't talk about our,
- 1:27our thoughts at all about the show, but we did.
- 1:29Did happen to finish around the same time.
- 1:32So I was like, oh perfect Miguel, do you want to come on
- 1:35Dave Hawke and you were like yeah, let's do so.
- 1:38I know like what is your history with kdrama and you know with
- 1:42with me and and everything. So history with kdrama and
- 1:46history with you are actually pretty intertwined.
- 1:49I started watching kdrama back in 2000 and I'd say eight or
- 1:54nine back one before the streaming before DramaFever
- 1:59before. Flex, you know, go to the Korean
- 2:02market and like try to find these loose DVDs and little
- 2:06plasticine covers with bad subtitles but like I would pick
- 2:10them up and I would just I would watch all of them for the
- 2:12longest time. I didn't know anybody who
- 2:15watched Korean dramas like at all like everyone watches Hmong
- 2:18rather anime or this or that but then I met Jessica and I'm
- 2:22remember making an off-the-cuff remark about this Korean show.
- 2:25I was watching and you just like froze you're like, wait, you You
- 2:30watch Korean. I was like, yeah, I watch a lot
- 2:32of Korean dramas then more than now, but he for years I would
- 2:38just watch these shows. You know, like this is digging
- 2:41way back now but like coffee prince.
- 2:44Yeah, yeah, super way back. Well, there's so many but there
- 2:50was a lot and I watched a lot of those and I moved on to movies.
- 2:53Then I moved on to Korean music, suffice it to say, I'm here and
- 2:57there with Korean stuff all the time and I'm glad I Just because
- 3:00for the longest time we would just like geek out about all
- 3:03these new Korean shows. It's crazy that they, it's
- 3:06exploded the way that it has. Oh my God, tell me about it.
- 3:11It's insane. Like, when we were talking about
- 3:14this years ago, we were the odd people out like nobody knew
- 3:18about kdramas. Nobody was talking about kdramas
- 3:22and it was like, uncool, like people around us would make fun
- 3:25of us for consuming, like foreign entertainment and even
- 3:29some See who would be, you know if somebody was willing.
- 3:32Okay sure. That sounds really interesting.
- 3:34Where can I watch it? Well, do you know the Korean
- 3:36market on Pines? If you go to the back past the
- 3:41little fridge with the coffees and you make a left and right
- 3:45before the dehydrated fish, you're going to find a shelf of
- 3:48moon. He's worried and they're like,
- 3:50oh yeah, right impossible. Impossible watch, it's so much
- 3:55easier to consume kdramas and Korean movies, and just general
- 3:59entertainment today than it was so many years ago where you had
- 4:03to like buy the DVDs and, and find it in the supermarket's, it
- 4:08was just not. Accessible like it is today and
- 4:11this this shoulder we're going to talk about in just a few
- 4:14minutes is like the culmination of the streaming just being like
- 4:19the perfect storm. This is the big payoff, it is
- 4:22the big payoff coming together to show.
- 4:24This is Korean, media is finally on the map and I do here for it
- 4:29if not a little bit spurn but you know what?
- 4:32Okay we'll get it to know. It feels like okay.

- 5:19We're going to talk about squid game.
- 5:20Now, the my drama, listen ops's, do you want to give that to us,
- 5:24Miguel? All right, yeah, sure my drama
- 5:25list synopsis after a failed business venture.
- 5:28The debt-ridden show, first, Jung ji Hoon lives his life,
- 5:31gambling away, the money that he mooches off of his elderly
- 5:34mother while failing to provide for her and his estranged
- 5:37daughter. When his life finally It's Rock
- 5:39Bottom, he receives an irresistible offer a promising.
- 5:42Him forty five point. Six billion won prize in
- 5:45exchange for winning traditional Korean children's games against
- 5:49455 other players among them as his childhood friend true
- 5:53sangwoo and commencing the games.
- 5:56The participants soon, learn of the deadly consequences that
- 5:59come with losing these games. And that's put to put it
- 6:04lightly, I feel silly consequences, but come on.
- 6:08This are In its entirety on September 17 2021.
- 6:13It is a Netflix original show. It is only Nine episodes long
- 6:18and it is written and directed by the same, dude.
- 6:23Wang dong hyuk. This is his first drama series
- 6:27ever. He is coming from the cinema
- 6:29world, he wrote and directed Miss Granny from 2014 and
- 6:34silenced from 2011, both great movies, I have never watched
- 6:37silence but I have watched Miss Granny.
- 6:39This granny. He's hysterical, definitely give
- 6:40it a watch. So let's go through our cast
- 6:44really fast. We have a jung-jae plays Song Ji
- 6:49hoon and he's player 455. He's the main character in the
- 6:53show. We have Puck Jesus plays Cho
- 6:57seung-woo, and he is a childhood friend.
- 7:01Also playing the squid game. We had you in plays Hangzhou
- 7:07know, and he is a Cop, we'll leave it at that.
- 7:12Yeah. And then we have a host of Side
- 7:14characters, which I know that will go through and talk about.
- 7:18So their real names are jung-ho Ian, all Young's do chapathi, a
- 7:24non-pom Kim Joo. Jung Soo young, man, that was
- 7:28tough. Awesome.
- 7:31Sometimes a gone, you even gun and Kim young-ok, we can talk
- 7:38really fast about these PPL. So young he jiong J.
- 7:43Sorry is player 456 my bad. I said for 5555 earlier he has
- 7:48been a Korean Cinema staple since 1994.
- 7:52He's been in movies like ilmari, I say ilmari.
- 7:56How do you say that? I think it's am I right?
- 7:59Is it Lamar isn't in my mind it's amati but like, I don't
- 8:03think that. Let me have it, right?
- 8:05Anyway, I know it. Yeah, it might be Italian right
- 8:07in my area like, but That I feel like it's not the PDI Chilean
- 8:12Spanish. It sounds that I don't even
- 8:14know. Okay, feel mot it from 2000.
- 8:17Yeah, that's the movie that the lake house is based on.
- 8:21So if you seen Keanu and Sandy in the lake house, ilmari is the
- 8:25movie that that's based on. He's also been in the house made
- 8:30from 2010. I sent you.
- 8:40For this, for this movie, The housemaid and I sent you a
- 8:43couple of screen still, it's good.
- 8:45That was like, I'm being kind of dramatizes by this movie.
- 8:48I wanted to put it behind me. It's an erotic movie, like,
- 8:53almost like a thriller, but not really, it's, it's drawing.
- 8:58I don't know if I recommend it to you guys but he is definitely
- 9:03a stud in that movie. So he's got range.
- 9:05So, he's got ringing, a boy has read, and he's also been In the
- 9:10movie assassination from 2015, which is really excellent.
- 9:14I would definitely recommend that movie to anybody.
- 9:17Okay, Sue is his childhood friend in the show, he has been
- 9:21on the TV show, Prison Playbook, and in movies, like time to hunt
- 9:25from 2020 and Persona in 2019, which is kind of like a short
- 9:30story, episodic, sort of movie. I can't even call it a movie
- 9:37really, but it's like an ass. It's very weird.
- 9:39And again, there it is an anthology.
- 9:41That's the word I was looking for.
- 9:43And it stars, I you both of those movies, you can watch on
- 9:46Netflix. And then we have, I just, I
- 9:50guess we should talk about. We had June because the cop
- 9:53because he has kind of exploded out of the show.
- 9:57Everyone is just so riled up by him because he's yeah, keep your
- 10:02pants on people keep. It's not that serious, but he
- 10:06was in, Romance is a bonus book and something in the rain, both
- 10:09of those shows are available. Netflix.
- 10:11So this show has taken the World by storm.
- 10:14As we said before it is Netflix's biggest ever series
- 10:18launched. It was number one on the
- 10:19platform for weeks. It's been watched by two thirds
- 10:23of all Netflix users. That's amounts to 144 million
- 10:28subscribers. That have watched at least two
- 10:30minutes of squid game. That's insane.
- 10:32It's not, it was in one. There was a few days I was 90 or
- 10:37was a number 1 in 90 countries. Number one in 90 countries and
- 10:43something that really brought that to light was just the
- 10:46process of getting it made. There's a story floating around
- 10:49and I managed to look into it and it's like oh okay.
- 10:51So it's real. The creator of the show wrote
- 10:54this way back in 2009 like this was like done ages ago and he
- 10:59shopped it around and shopped it around and nobody wanted it at
- 11:03some point he hit financial situation so bad.
- 11:06He even had to sell the laptop that he wrote.
- 11:07The story on. It was like the it was basically
- 11:09like, A Korean drama. And then a few years pass, you
- 11:14know, Korean media gets more attention and look, it's number
- 11:17one everywhere. Look at all these people, just
- 11:19watching this Korean show and all the dogs.
- 11:23Yeah, I know, we'll talk about that in a second.
- 11:25Yeah, but that story reminds me of still Sylvester, Stallone and
- 11:30Rocky because he wrote Rocky when he was like, dirt, poor and
- 11:33really struggling and he had to sell his like beloved, dog, and
- 11:36all this stuff. And then when he finally made
- 11:39the move, He and Inked a deal for him to also star and he
- 11:42started making money and he went to go buy his dog back.
- 11:45It was like this crazy success story.
- 11:49I don't know why. I remember that about the dog to
- 11:50like, yeah, I need to get him duck, I do it's like, a first
- 11:56thing. You do is get back.
- 11:56The thing. You love this show.
- 11:59I cannot stress to you guys. How many people have watched his
- 12:03show? How it is now in the zeitgeist?
- 12:07For a kdrama to be this prolific.
- 12:11I mean, I'm proud. I feel very proud that like and
- 12:15ecstatic that people are actually watching a kdrama and
- 12:19they're putting their money where their mouth is too.
- 12:20Because for Halloween. This, this statistic came out
- 12:24with the Vans, they all wear plain white Vans in the show,
- 12:27the sale of plain white, Vans worldwide increased over seven
- 12:33thousand percent. White Vans for the first time in
- 12:37ages were sold out. For one day, they were sold out.
- 12:41Everybody's going to be wearing this for Halloween.
- 12:44This is the, it's a whole, you can't take two steps in any
- 12:48direction without seeing a meme about the show.
- 12:50Like, it's everywhere. Like it's so it really resonated
- 12:56with people. It struck a nerve in a good way,
- 12:58like its massive. I want to know what you think.
- 13:04Why do you think it did? So, well, I think there's a few
- 13:09things that play, I think that the concept itself about playing
- 13:15childhood games, but with deadly Stakes as fascinating for
- 13:19anyone. If you tell us like, oh, we're
- 13:22going to play tag. Okay cool.
- 13:25But then you play tag in the stakes are.
- 13:27Oh, you need to win or you're going to die.
- 13:29I think that really catches a lot of people's attention.
- 13:31Ian, there's a certain Underdog element going on.
- 13:34There's a lot of people in bad financial situations in the
- 13:37show, trying to overcome that and we get we get to peer at
- 13:42different versions of the same story.
- 13:43Not everybody's broke for the same reason.
- 13:45They all have their motives, we all want to cheer on the person
- 13:48who doesn't seem like they're getting a fair shake.
- 13:52So I think there's a lot of themes here that are interesting
- 13:54across so many cultures like childhood games and you know
- 13:58don't die and don't. I had a chance to Like Against
- 14:02All Odds, get rich and get out of every prom, your I think
- 14:06that's something that really works with a lot of people.
- 14:10Yeah, I think that people were surprised by the violence as
- 14:13well, so which is pretty unusual for even a kdrama to have this
- 14:17much more mmm-hmm. And for Western audience, she'll
- 14:22give will talk about it. But for Western audience I think
- 14:25that was probably the best idea. Yeah.
- 14:29I think so we're living in a, you know, an HBO age where you
- 14:34can watch anything you want and there's not really a cap on it.
- 14:38A limit on what they can do in television shows that aren't on
- 14:43cable and lamp shading doesn't seem to work with a lot of
- 14:46people anymore. Like people don't want that old
- 14:48trick where. For example, let's say someone
- 14:51gets shot and they move away and they, you know, the camera moves
- 14:54away only shows a shadow of someone being killed like we've
- 14:57seen so much. Now people want a visceral look
- 15:01That's what happened to this person so it definitely works.
- 15:05Yeah, it worked for me, one last thing we'll talk about before we
- 15:09get into our thoughts is the translation woes and the Ugly
- 15:14dub that happened on this. So I didn't necessarily feel the
- 15:21translation Badness when I was watching it because I have a
- 15:26little bit more of a trained ear and was like filling in the
- 15:30blanks, you know? With my own knowledge and of the
- 15:33culture and stuff and things. Like when people say like hyung
- 15:37and in the translation, it says her name.
- 15:39I'm like, that's not. Yeah, that's nice.
- 15:41You know, are like when it's not the meaning of that instead of
- 15:45their name. That's right.
- 15:46Exactly. So it was no.
- 15:50So what did you think of the translation and the dub, which I
- 15:54personally have not not seen the show tubbed the dub, so, For
- 16:01context for listeners out there, I'm really, really big into like
- 16:05Linguistics. I love different languages so if
- 16:08there's ever a dub for something, I'm the person who
- 16:10watches like the compilation of a Disney song in 40 different
- 16:13language. Like I love to see that they do.
- 16:16I love to see how they go about translating stuff.
- 16:19So I sat there and I watched a quarter of the first episode in
- 16:22every dub after I had already seen it, fully in Korean.
- 16:26So I watched the first like 20 minutes and or first 15 minutes
- 16:30in English and in French. And then Spanish and then so it
- 16:32was great but it wasn't great because the englishdom the
- 16:37English dub I think let me go with the translation first.
- 16:41As far as translations go they did as they did a much better
- 16:47job than what they could have done.
- 16:49There's so many nuances with the language and the culture that
- 16:52just aren't going to translate. The show is already working on
- 16:56the assumption that you are Korean.
- 16:58You know, what games they're playing, you know what it means.
- 17:00If this Then that happens. So to translate everything, the
- 17:04way that they did and somehow communicate everything for a
- 17:07global audience is a massive undertaking.
- 17:11There are some things unfortunately, like some poetic
- 17:14phrases and stuff that are Lost in Translation.
- 17:17But I feel like when you're translating something, this
- 17:21complex, it's probably best to be a little more.
- 17:23Utilitarian, instead of poetic the dub quality of the actors in
- 17:29English, I thought were very poor.
- 17:31Like I it was it was just, it wasn't distractingly bad and
- 17:36we'll talk about distractingly bad because there's a whole
- 17:38English thing that goes on in this show.
- 17:40But we'll talk about that in the spoiler space.
- 17:44The French dub, believe it or not, was really good.
- 17:47The Spanish dub is really really good like they translate a lot
- 17:51of like the poetic stuff that gets lost when moving it to
- 17:53English but in general just watch the Korean on.
- 17:58I just lost the connection. Just watch it sub like I
- 18:01understand it's not for everyone but that's really going to be
- 18:04the only way that you get the emotion, the passion, just watch
- 18:10it. Yeah.
- 18:10But they did a good job, a good job.
- 18:12If you have to watch a dub it's fine.
- 18:15And if you know if you don't know, Korean the subs, they
- 18:18work. They do what they're supposed to
- 18:19do. So right?
- 18:21Okay. So with that being said, we've
- 18:23come to the end of our our general Netflix success bit.
- 18:30What did you think? Ink of squid game ago.
- 18:34Overall, I liked it a lot like a lot.
- 18:40A lot. Yeah.
- 18:42Until the very end. Oh, the ending.
- 18:45Yes. I I love the show from
- 18:49beginning, literally unto until the ending, because then it
- 18:54turned into this whole thing, are we in spoiler space now?
- 18:57No, no. We are not that spoilers face,
- 18:59okay, I'll announce it when we anyway, it was a nearly Perfect,
- 19:05show. That's how I felt about it.
- 19:07It was nearly perfect. And I still like it, I'll still
- 19:10recommend it with disclaimers, but I it's a near-perfect show.
- 19:15And I think with all the memes and all the culture and
- 19:17everything look like it's nine episodes, it's an essential
- 19:21watch officially like you have to watch it.
- 19:23Hmm. But you know, I liked it very
- 19:26much. That's all I liked it very much.
- 19:28I liked it very much. Okay.
- 19:31Choices were made. I also really liked the show.
- 19:38I think that a lot of people were put off by the violence,
- 19:41put off by the blood and gore and guts, and just general
- 19:46queasiness of the subject matter, right?
- 19:49But I think that it really works for me, I don't know why.
- 19:54But my sensibilities, they don't necessarily lean toward Gore and
- 19:58violence and all this stuff. But I seem to be really
- 20:01comfortable with it and never find it didn't notice.
- 20:04Never felt gratuitous to me. Did I never tracked out?
- 20:07I was never like, oh no, that cross the line.
- 20:09I was just like, okay, that's par for the course.
- 20:10I know what I'm getting into I was soon as the first episode
- 20:15where the first game necessarily gets going, then I'm like okay
- 20:20I've strapped in like I'm ready. So I think if you have gotten
- 20:24this far into the episode and you have not watched squid game
- 20:27and that's not your bag then, sorry.
- 20:30Don't watch it. Like I totally understand where
- 20:32you're coming from, that's the reason.
- 20:34Why Rico didn't watch it. He's like, no.
- 20:35No, it doesn't interest me in the in the slightest.
- 20:38That's not my, my bag. Yeah.
- 20:41I mean, and I will say that it does.
- 20:43If you're worried about violence, it's less, it's less
- 20:47like saw violent, you know, it's less like Serbian film violent,
- 20:52Texas, Chainsaw, Massacre violent.
- 20:54It's not that kind of violent. This is violence with Stakes.
- 20:59Like, I think that's why it feels so grounded like yeah, it
- 21:02gets bloody, but nothing is Beyond the pale and nothing's
- 21:06ever really. So if you know, if you're
- 21:10worried that it's going to be really gratuitous over-the-top
- 21:12violence. It's probably not going to be
- 21:13like that either so but yeah, it does get gory.
- 21:17Hmm, it does get gory. Blood is spilt and I totally
- 21:22admire the overall theme of the show, which is class inequality
- 21:29in South Korea. Hmm, this is a huge basically,
- 21:34Uh, the thesis of the show, right?
- 21:36And I appreciate that. This theme seems to be cropping
- 21:41up more and more, you know, parasite, dealt with that as
- 21:46well like class inequality. And actually, there was another
- 21:50Netflix. This was actually a movie and it
- 21:53was a Spaniard movie called the platform.
- 21:56Yes. And I tell you watches the way.
- 21:59Yeah, that one I felt that was To, that was a very gratuitous
- 22:06movie. It was shot incredibly well,
- 22:08that was that, was it shook me? Like, I had to like, take a
- 22:12breather. I have to go on a walk or
- 22:14something. After I watch a movie because it
- 22:15was so much, I can't actually. So, something really terrible
- 22:19happens in that movie and I was eating a rice ball full of sour
- 22:23plum which used to be one of my favorite foods?
- 22:27I haven't been able to eat at sense because every time I taste
- 22:31sour plum, I see the vision of a clip from the Platform.
- 22:35Like I'm scarred. Like that movie was like a lot.
- 22:38It was a little dead and I guess maybe cuz I've like worked up a
- 22:43tolerance to see this sort of thing.
- 22:45Like again squid game didn't feel like gratuitous or
- 22:50over-the-top necessarily to me. What were the best parts of the
- 22:54show for you? I'm gonna go ahead and agree
- 22:58with the theme. I think that not only it
- 23:01explores inequality, but it also explores like What does somebody
- 23:06who's gotten themself into a situation dessert?
- 23:10How much does society? Like how much is it us to for us
- 23:13to say, this person's life is Expendable?
- 23:16Because of what this person has done to themselves.
- 23:19They're worthless. I think that there's a very big
- 23:22question that's asked throughout the show of that.
- 23:24Like as you know, player start falling away.
- 23:28The question just keeps getting louder in the background, it's
- 23:30like okay, yeah, I gambled away my money.
- 23:33I did this. I I lost that.
- 23:35I neglected, this but I'm still human, do I deserve to fight to
- 23:39the death? Just so I can get a leg up and I
- 23:43found that really, that was really stirring.
- 23:47I really like the individual motives, right?
- 23:50The show did a very good job in. This is why it's not gratuitous,
- 23:54instead of just, here's his group of people all competing
- 23:57for this say, the way Battle Royale would do it.
- 24:02They took in Squid game and it's not I bet they take an episode
- 24:06to show multiple points of view. We get away from the protagonist
- 24:10and we spend a day in the life with all of these people in the
- 24:14financial situations, they're running into their own personal
- 24:17stakes and why they have to play this game.
- 24:20So it's a very humanized grounded show especially for
- 24:25something so violent. And so over the top I think they
- 24:27did a great job of connecting the whole motive and human
- 24:30condition of it all. I love that about the show.
- 24:33I Agree with you. Wholeheartedly?
- 24:36What is the price of a human life?
- 24:39Yeah. Why is it however much debt you
- 24:42owe is that you're, you know, the price of your, your head so
- 24:45to speak? Or is it more?
- 24:48Is it less because of your where you come from your background,
- 24:53your class so to speak. These are questions that the
- 24:57show does not explicitly asked. It's asking in the subtext.
- 25:02Hmm. And they do, I do.
- 25:04Found it through the whole thing.
- 25:05They all they all Wonder me, it's like yeah.
- 25:09Okay. And what were the worst parts of
- 25:12the show for you? The spoiler-free worst parts of
- 25:16the show for spoiler-free worst parts and them, you know what,
- 25:18we'll jump into spoilers right after your answer.
- 25:21All right? I think the worst part of the
- 25:24show It had uneven pacing. Hmm.
- 25:30Like there was times where it was a go, go go and you're all
- 25:33in and it's awesome and everything is great but I felt
- 25:37like there were a couple of episodes or a couple of parts in
- 25:40the show where it comes to almost a halt like it.
- 25:44And it's such a change in Pace and energy that it kind of threw
- 25:47me off. So, you know, that's one thing.
- 25:51But other than that, Nothing really.
- 25:55I didn't, I really didn't have many complaints about the show
- 25:58in general. Nothing?
- 26:00Really. I think that was the only thing
- 26:02just some uneven pacing. Okay, I can agree with someone.
- 26:05Even pacing. I can agree with maybe some
- 26:08English speech or speakers in the show not being like Oh that
- 26:14yeah well then yeah, yeah yeah. So those would be my My couple
- 26:24of nitpicks maybe no. I think the OST is pretty stand
- 26:29out, especially the main song from the that's in all of The
- 26:36Tick-Tock videos. Yeah, yeah, it's really
- 26:41memorable. So, that's a positive for me.
- 26:43I don't know if I can forgive them for using my favorite Waltz
- 26:48in the show as well. Blue Danube.
- 26:51That was, that was pretty rough. I was It's going to be PTSD
- 26:55whenever that comes up now. Yeah, I was kind of upset that
- 26:57they use that particular Waltz in the show but it's classical
- 27:01music. I mean, it's fair game.
- 27:03All right, so I think we've given our general thoughts and a
- 27:07couple of knit picks for the show but I know that you're
- 27:10chomping at the bit to talk spoilers for the show.
- 27:12So we're going to talk spoilers right after this.
- 27:23You want to come in? All right, so we're on the other
- 27:25side of spoilers. So if you haven't watched squid
- 27:28game, you're about to be spoiled FYI.
- 27:31Okay, where do you want to start?
- 27:34We go. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:42That we could probably talk through the Game's real fast.
- 27:46So, the first game is the red light, green light, or green
- 27:50light, red light. However, you want to talk about
- 27:52it. That's really matter that's like
- 27:55the basic concept of the game, right?
- 27:58Yeah. Freeze.
- 27:59When I turn around, run one. I'm turned away.
- 28:02Exactly, exactly. So, how did you feel about that?
- 28:06It was in the very first episode.
- 28:09So I saw all of the memes surrounding it.
- 28:12Yeah. But I never saw how violent that
- 28:15was going to be and I'm not used to seeing that in Korean dramas
- 28:20in general. Like I'll see you in like, in a
- 28:21movie here there, of course. But in a Rama and not at all.
- 28:25So once the first guy just gets shot, I'm like, oh shit.
- 28:30Like this is this is going to be like this is real.
- 28:33Now, this is real. Then the second time, you know,
- 28:37another person get shot, then they all Scramble for the door
- 28:39and it's just that no mercy. Like, ballast of just being
- 28:43shot, it's it was really jarring but it really cemented the
- 28:49stakes like this show is not going to screw around and I love
- 28:54that. Even the even the voiceover that
- 28:56gives the rules for the games. It's like to repeat rules of the
- 28:59game are, and everyone's like oh no, I loved it.
- 29:03It was a killer. Wow!
- 29:06It was a killer entrance to the show, Absolutely intended.
- 29:09It has that whole swing jazz slow motion Fly Me to the Moon
- 29:14bit going. Yeah.
- 29:16Oh and it did a great job of establishing the character of
- 29:20each person who's playing. Absolutely, I think that was The
- 29:23main goal of the first episode in that first game is to
- 29:26obviously weed out the non main players and introduce the main
- 29:34characters for us in an easier high-stakes way things.
- 29:41I did like that they were playing in a school field and
- 29:43this is something that I feel like Western audience audiences
- 29:46might not get is that they're playing in a school field that's
- 29:50the set or whatever that they're on that Arena.
- 29:54Is a school field and do you want to talk about the
- 30:00significance of it being children's games?
- 30:03I do. But I also wanted to point out
- 30:05something that might have gotten lost.
- 30:07Oh yeah. What's your thing?
- 30:09Yeah. Something that blew my mind and
- 30:11I believe, I forgot, I believe is the protagonist who sang
- 30:15iPlayer, four, five, six. One of the characters was on
- 30:17Jimmy Fallon and they mentioned the thing about that.
- 30:20Little girl, who is playing red light, green light, that big
- 30:23creepy P. Statue that is a character that
- 30:26most Korean people are familiar with.
- 30:28Like that is a character that's in their version of the.
- 30:32I know what we have it in Spanish, it's called luck idea,
- 30:35van Antigua. I think Koreans have something
- 30:37similar, it's like a kind of like a, you know what, the best
- 30:40analog for that would be like Dick and Jane like it's
- 30:44characters that commonplace that you see, when you're really
- 30:47little learning how to read and stuff.
- 30:48So I think that just adds another terrifying element, it's
- 30:51just like if a giant Cat in the Hat, wasn't The field and just
- 30:55turns around and you all die of that.
- 30:59But yeah, Cat in the Hat. Can you imagine or green eggs
- 31:04and ham Sam? I Am is staying at something.
- 31:06I can't imagine it. Okay.
- 31:11So I really appreciated the fact that they were playing
- 31:15children's games, it was a bastardization of Innocence, it
- 31:20was a loss of Innocence, it was a redefining of your Formative
- 31:25childhood years into something. That's very Sinister and, you
- 31:30know, deadly and I appreciate that juxtaposition that
- 31:34something as simple as a child game is Could kill you.
- 31:41Yeah, and it's and there's a subjects to it.
- 31:44It goes back to the whole idea of like what mistakes do you
- 31:47make in life and at the end of the day, who decides what your
- 31:51punishment is for that? And how long do you have to be a
- 31:54slave to that? So these are people who are
- 31:57perceived by people in the upper echelon.
- 31:59Oh you're getting into debt. You know, you've lost the pot,
- 32:02you're out to lunch. Like you don't know how to
- 32:04manage your money. You act like a child.
- 32:06So we're going to treat you like a child with adults takes And
- 32:09it's terrifying. I I feel like you touched on
- 32:13something about debt and the way that it is in Korea and
- 32:18especially portrayed in entertainment, which is how we
- 32:21understand Korea through this lens of we're seeing it through
- 32:25movies TV music, right? We've never been to Korea.
- 32:29We are non-korean and so in the context of these shows and
- 32:34stuff, the people that are debt-ridden are extreme burden.
- 32:39Ian's on those around them on their family, on their friends.
- 32:43And that's not something that we necessarily feel here in the
- 32:48west. And in the US that when someone
- 32:50has debt, it's almost so commonplace for every person to
- 32:55be in debt to have, you know, thousands of dollars hundreds of
- 33:00thousands of dollars. If you talking about student
- 33:02loans, especially, you know, it's not something it's a joke
- 33:07at this point. It's immediately But yeah, then
- 33:10I have my student loan. Exactly.
- 33:12No, it's a joke suspected but in Korea.
- 33:16It seems like the way that these people get in debt is super
- 33:21different than how us As Americans get in debt because
- 33:25what they're doing is going through skeezy, private lenders,
- 33:29not the banks, not, you know, the government or anything and
- 33:34they're getting in debt over their head upside down.
- 33:39And the only way that they can pay it back is through these
- 33:43blood contracts where they can take body parts from them, they
- 33:48can come into their homes and repossess all of their
- 33:51furniture, all of their belongings their cars, they can
- 33:55harass them in the street, and go after their family, their
- 33:59children, to pay off the debt. It's really a problem.
- 34:04You know, it's not like you're about that because, you know,
- 34:07here in the states we have kind of an analog for When but it's
- 34:10also treated as a joke. You know, like, oh the mobs
- 34:12gonna get here. The loan rights big time.
- 34:14He's gonna break your legs. Yeah.
- 34:16And again, this like you said, this is just my understanding of
- 34:19it. This is something that's so
- 34:21commonplace. Like they've exhausted the bank
- 34:25as alone as even an option. Yeah, so there was Orting to
- 34:28this. So, here in the states we have a
- 34:30lot of laws that go against predatory lending practices it
- 34:35no matter how much debt and stuff we get into.
- 34:37There's always an opportunity to kind And of slip out, if things
- 34:41get to a point where they're more or less inhumane.
- 34:43Yeah, I don't really see any kind of reflection on that.
- 34:45And there's a shame element that they have that.
- 34:48We don't hear you buy a 1200 dollar iPhone that you can't
- 34:51afford, but people are like, hey, at least you got an iPhone
- 34:54and that's right. That's you're paying it off over
- 34:56there. It's like you're a shame to your
- 34:58family, to your community, to your friends, you don't deserve
- 35:02to be outside. Like it's this real burden and
- 35:05it's jarring. It's jarring and they are
- 35:08social. I is to those around them.
- 35:11They are looked down upon, and this is just because they're in
- 35:15debt, they also come from low class.
- 35:19They already come from no money. They're not upper-echelon,
- 35:22they're not child walls or whatever you want to call them.
- 35:26They're not heirs to conglomerates in the Korea,
- 35:29which is a lot of K Trauma Center on the tribals.
- 35:34So this is, you know, parasite territory so to speak.
- 35:39Eek these are people living mooching off others and trying
- 35:44to to just make it day by day. Yeah.
- 35:48They're just trying to get a leg up and to do pretty average
- 35:51stuff. I think that's the more alarming
- 35:54part like there's a couple of exceptions.
- 35:56Of course one of the primary characters she's you know, a
- 36:00North Korean Defector yeah who's trying to bring her family over.
- 36:04So that's one of the more extraordinary situations that we
- 36:07have where Money is you eating? But yeah.
- 36:11True. Everyone likes is pretty mundane
- 36:12debt. Exactly.
- 36:14She is definitely a little bit different and she's not only
- 36:16different because of her character coming from the north
- 36:19and being basically an outcast because she is North Korean but
- 36:25this actors Jung Soo young. This is her only action credit.
- 36:30I'm impressed identity is she was a model before this and this
- 36:34is her big break. And what a hell of a break
- 36:38because I think she's not the number one, followed Korean.
- 36:45On Instagram, I it wouldn't surprise me.
- 36:50There's a lot of guys who are like really and it's partially a
- 36:53mean, but so many people are like simpering her so hard.
- 36:55They're just like they also it's her turn like shakes her.
- 37:00This is what this character to she did, I think she she was
- 37:04such a strong character in resilient and badass and that's
- 37:10something that we don't necessarily see in kdramas.
- 37:14We're like Like a girl is willing to like shank a dude.
- 37:18Yeah, and she had this kind of stoicism about her where she was
- 37:22like she understood the gravity of every situation.
- 37:25We see her trying to take care of her brother.
- 37:27So she's more than just a one-dimensional, right?
- 37:30Pouty sultry girl, like a lot of these kdramas do.
- 37:34She's just here like okay I know the stakes, I need to get it
- 37:38like when she throws the pot of hot coffee and that dude's face.
- 37:42Oh yeah. She's like cross me again.
- 37:44I was like, I love it. There's like a ferocity to her
- 37:49and there's a there's definitely a ferocity to a few of these
- 37:51characters but her, especially I think that struck a chord with
- 37:55the audience and that's part of the reason why other than she's
- 37:58beautiful. But that definitely struck a
- 38:00chord with his yeah, that people really like to see women with
- 38:06agency and she definitely was full of agency the agency.
- 38:12She's trying to she's She's her own person, she's sad.
- 38:17Also trying to like she's sad. She's trying to help her family,
- 38:20which is massive. You know, these people.
- 38:23Yeah. Not even just in North Korea.
- 38:25Like there's there's North and South Korean relations like you
- 38:28know there's people all over the world who pay people to bring
- 38:31people to a country to have a better life.
- 38:33I think that that resonates with a lot of people, this girl's
- 38:36just trying to get a better future for her and her family
- 38:40and I think a lot of people can relate to that and it was played
- 38:43what I loved about it was Was played in a non hysterical way.
- 38:48Like it wasn't like the feisty Underdog.
- 38:52Who's gonna like no? She's like, no.
- 38:54I got shit to do like, yeah. Like I need to make this where I
- 38:57love that about her. Yeah, she wasn't sure I was very
- 39:00close to do. You want to talk about the
- 39:05scary? I do?
- 39:07Because I hate to say it, she's the other side of this coin.
- 39:11Hmm, because I gotta be on. I love her.
- 39:14I love her. She's horrible, but I love her.
- 39:19What was her name? Kim.
- 39:21Kim Johan. The course woman played by hon
- 39:24media. Oh no, it's reverse.
- 39:26So the character's name is Han menial and she's played by Kim
- 39:31Joon Young. She was like the pick me to end
- 39:35all pygmies, like she was like oh there's a dude who looks
- 39:40strong. Let's go over there.
- 39:43She was loud. She was boisterous and I think
- 39:46in a very roundabout way I might be reading too much into it but
- 39:50I think that she was set up to be the other side of the coin of
- 39:53this other girl I think she's your very she's kind of like a
- 39:56parody of your very common loud feisty kdrama girl you know,
- 40:02like He's very obnoxious, she's very loud.
- 40:05But even with all that, there's a kind of charm there going.
- 40:08You don't know why you're going to follow her narrative but
- 40:11she's like she's the Loose Cannon and I like that, it's
- 40:14great. Yeah, there's a couple of so in
- 40:17my own movie watching in TV watching Whenever there is a
- 40:21story that you can kind of figure out the broad Strokes of
- 40:25any story, right? Yeah.
- 40:27There's a couple of characters that they throw in as wild
- 40:30cards, right? I call them wild cards.
- 40:32I thought she was Wild card. I thought the undercover cop was
- 40:36the main wild card and then I didn't necessarily call them a
- 40:40wild card, but I called that the old man was going to be the
- 40:45Puppet Master. Oh yeah, saw it coming so I can
- 40:49I put together a episode right away.
- 40:53You texted me, you're like I had just finished it and you're
- 40:57like, hmm, this old guy seems a bit suspicious to me.
- 41:00I'm like, ah, she's already cracked it like that.
- 41:04The first of all. So we just talked about two
- 41:07characters we can talk about the old man now real fast.
- 41:10But the man the this be a whole like as soon as I saw his number
- 41:15that he's number 1001, I was like, forget it.
- 41:18Yeah, that's it. He's super size and then he was
- 41:20only too eager in episode one to start running again.
- 41:24While everyone else was still shocked at the Bloodshed during
- 41:27the the red light green light game he was completely unpaid
- 41:31dementia angle but I'm like that doesn't that doesn't track.
- 41:34It only came in during that episode, the gombu episode, the
- 41:40marbles with the marbles that was when he was played up the
- 41:44dementia. I would say that's the best
- 41:47episode to take advantage of an old man and I was like he'll
- 41:51Hane it out. Yeah, I think that's what would
- 41:55you say is your favorite episode / game?
- 41:57Because mine is the gamble. The marbles one.
- 42:02Um, they're also good, but I'm going to have to go with the
- 42:07want the marbles to. It wasn't my favorite episode
- 42:09like in general, but I think it worked as, you know, I think it
- 42:13might be because I love the second episode.
- 42:15Where they're all outside and they get all the Back stories of
- 42:18all these characters. And I feel like the episode of
- 42:20the marbles was like the culmination of that, like here
- 42:23comes everybody's personality to do them in order to help them.
- 42:27As best as it can, everyone's making these decisions, they
- 42:30didn't think they were going to make everybody's be put in the
- 42:33position like this is real. Now like we got to get out of
- 42:35here. So the marble game I loved it.
- 42:38It was also like the saddest episode.
- 42:41It was show. It was it was a like you said, a
- 42:44culmination. In it was the deepest cut.
- 42:47I think that they Bamboozled the audience just as much as the
- 42:51players into thinking that they're going to play the game
- 42:55as a pair. Yeah.
- 42:57Not against each other. Yeah.
- 42:59It was going to be like oh two are going to come out at this
- 43:02and write it was going to be a group group project so to speak.
- 43:06And 1-800 you thought it was not the case they had to.
- 43:14I can't I can't Ali is probably he got done.
- 43:22So dirty, the worst ending to a character.
- 43:25I think was his his breaking. It was heartbreaking
- 43:29heartbreaking because you saw the evolution of his
- 43:32relationship with what's-his-name Tell Jon Cho
- 43:36seung-woo which is a childhood friend, the embezzler the white
- 43:41Colour Thief. Hmm which again that's another
- 43:45Thing that we can talk about is that he's a white Colour Thief
- 43:48versus the other guy. It's like he probably feels a
- 43:50little bit. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:53But Ali is actually really unique.
- 43:58He's representing an entire culture of people that exist in
- 44:05Korea. You know, these workers Daniel
- 44:07people who just work and his boss hasn't paid him for three
- 44:11or four or five months. Yeah.
- 44:13And like, It's tragic because it's like it really that's a
- 44:18kind of diversity and a kind of diversity and storytelling that
- 44:22you don't get with Korean dramas, not all like at all.
- 44:26So to see a Pakistani character with his own steaks living, in a
- 44:31shipping container with his wife and his kid, which I found that
- 44:35interesting because after he smashed his bosses fingers and
- 44:38that like press machine, he got enough money that he could have
- 44:41just dipped right? Like, I don't know, I don't
- 44:43know. I Was like a lot of money.
- 44:46I gotta tell you, you took up an envelope and just dipped, but
- 44:49that was when the boss is hand, got like ripped to shreds.
- 44:52That was the only time in the whole show that I was like,
- 44:55haha. Oh my God, I mean to, I didn't
- 44:58think I was like, yeah, yeah, it was like, what's going on?
- 45:01I'm Liana the fingers, the fingers are gone.
- 45:05So that was they lingered on that one?
- 45:07That was, that was a, maybe that was the gratuitous one, but you
- 45:10know what the effect was worth it, it was worth it.
- 45:14I I don't fault it for being shocking.
- 45:18Yea, but, yeah, I'll Leah is fantastic.
- 45:21I love the fact that they have this Indian actor who's been
- 45:24playing bit Parts in kdramas for the past few years, comment and
- 45:27actually steal the show. Like, he is so compelling as a
- 45:33character. You feel for him, you want him
- 45:35to make it just as much as kind. Like, he's so kind, he saves our
- 45:40main dude, in the first game, he's down.
- 45:45Like band together to like, oh, yeah, let's do this.
- 45:48He shows her spec through honorifics, he's willing out.
- 45:51Hey, back anyone, who he thought, Odom, I was just like
- 45:54when and then my heart was wrong.
- 45:57As I didn't know, I try to shut my brain off as much as
- 46:00possible, so that it could really land the impact.
- 46:02And I'm like, it didn't click in my head, whatever he put, I
- 46:06thought maybe the marbles that he had in his pouch was going to
- 46:10be less than, you know, maybe the other guys stole them.
- 46:15Majority of the marbles and he was going to lose on a
- 46:17technicality. But the fact that he switched it
- 46:20out with stones after he's walking around watching all
- 46:24these people get killed with the hope that he's like oh it's
- 46:27going to be fine because I just got to find another player like
- 46:31that was. I was gutted.
- 46:33That was real. Yeah.
- 46:34Cho seung-woo was Absolutely cruel to ruthless ruthless to do
- 46:42that to him after they had established this Brotherhood.
- 46:46He was calling him hyung throughout the show not his name
- 46:50like the subtitles would have you think, you know, hyung is
- 46:53like a term of endearment. It's implying a closeness that
- 46:57they're brothers because hyung little literally means brother.
- 47:00And he turns on him, he uses this manipulative I mean, he's
- 47:08been manipulative throughout the whole show but the clue of it
- 47:11with the Dow gonna let dog gonna do what shape to choose because
- 47:15he had an idea of what the game might be.
- 47:18Yes. And here with the got he got the
- 47:19easiest shape just in case he was right and he let even 456 he
- 47:25let him go get the umbrella. Yeah can you imagine what shape
- 47:30would you have? Chosen not knowing the context
- 47:32of this game? I would have chosen the umbrella
- 47:34and I would have been dead because I love umbrellas.
- 47:37Neurotic on taxation. Yeah, I think it would have been
- 47:40umbrella or star. Yeah, I definitely wouldn't have
- 47:44chose the circle or the triangle The truth.
- 47:47Like where's the fun in that? Yeah I want to do the umbrella
- 47:51umbrella or star. Yeah we well we would have died.
- 47:57I just couldn't sleep. Yeah, it was awful but the Ali
- 48:04death. I think struck struck me the
- 48:06most. Yeah.
- 48:08It was just and then he calls out here long before he's like
- 48:11young and then he gets shot. It's just they did us the favor
- 48:15of not showing him like Get shot shot.
- 48:18They did ya like the? It was actually pretty packed
- 48:21for the audience. Yes.
- 48:23And I thought that when they didn't show the old man getting
- 48:28shot either, where it was only a lie and only players are one
- 48:34that didn't get a full face shot on screen and that you could
- 48:41read into it as much as you want.
- 48:43I think that he's just as important as players are one who
- 48:47turns out to be a major influence on the entire games,
- 48:52which is nice to that reveal because that that's going to
- 48:55deserve its own thing. Yeah, we'll burn.
- 48:58It was the marble game like your favorite game.
- 49:00The Mario game was my favorite because it had the most tension.
- 49:03In to it, to me the red light. Green light was almost like
- 49:08Yeah, I know who's going to make it out.
- 49:10It's a tutorial thing. Like the sugar cookie thou gonna
- 49:14again I was like I know who's going to make it out.
- 49:18And the tug-of-war again you know who's going to make it out?
- 49:23What about the glass platforms? That one again, I was like, I
- 49:27has to be, it has to be sung, Chi Hoon.
- 49:31It has to be Cho seung-woo, the child or friend, the
- 49:35manipulative asshole, who killed Ali and it was either going to
- 49:39be one of the girls. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:45You know your course I'd be Neo pick, meager off street, smart
- 49:50lady, but that ahjumma or it was going to be Kang savioke, the
- 49:57North Korean, there was really no, how great was it when they
- 50:01get back from the marble game and how many I was just sitting
- 50:05there like, hey, that's a great again are all shell-shocked.
- 50:11That's literally its Fair, it's fair.
- 50:13We're all equals here. So if I don't have a partner, I
- 50:16can't play. That's literally the definition
- 50:18of a wild card to me, is that they take her off the board, but
- 50:23she's still on the board. Yeah, she's still there and
- 50:26she's looking at his name the thug, the his oh Jong Ducks, who
- 50:35John Luke's face tattoo man, there, their whole relationship
- 50:40was A ride, a roller coaster. How was that was wild?
- 50:46That's a show in itself. Oh, yeah.
- 50:49And I love that like, I loved their Dynamic together because
- 50:53he thought that he was just gonna get over on her.
- 50:56Like, he's gotten over on everything else and he finally
- 50:58met his match. And it wasn't the way he was
- 51:00expecting. Yeah, I think he's going to
- 51:03bully everybody. And it's like, no hits this.
- 51:05Wild card check who's going to bring you down?
- 51:08Exactly. I appreciated that they planted
- 51:10that seed when You betrayed her the first time she was like,
- 51:14okay, fine, but I'm gonna kill you before.
- 51:16This thing is over, the game is not going to kill you.
- 51:20I am gonna kill you and I was like, yes, bitch, preach it,
- 51:24speak it into existence, and that's exactly what happened.
- 51:28You know, there, there's some things that people say in a show
- 51:32and I'm like that's never going to happen.
- 51:33Doesn't usually when somebody says something like that you're
- 51:36waiting for the moment. Yeah.
- 51:39You're ready for it to happen and you.
- 51:41Your, but it comes in the way you least expect.
- 51:44I think, what I liked about her is she kept her word, but it
- 51:48also speaks to why she's up there.
- 51:49She's in my top three, like four characters, because she was so
- 51:53sure of herself, even until the end, she's like, okay, I'm not
- 51:57going to win this, but but I know who I am and I'm taking you
- 52:05with me and I'm gonna die on my own terms and that was that like
- 52:10that was, that was really cool. Cool.
- 52:12I love that. So we haven't talked about the
- 52:16cop, the undercover cop. Oh, yeah.
- 52:19Because he's the main wild-card, you kind of expected him to
- 52:24bring it down from the inside or something.
- 52:28Never Never Happened, never happened.
- 52:32He doesn't bring it down from the inside.
- 52:34He's trying to find his missing brother.
- 52:37He Is super responsible, was that for you?
- 52:42Oh, that was very predictable. Those very predictable, right?
- 52:44Like, that's a simple fact that his, but they were like his
- 52:46brothers gone missing, and he's not on the roster of this season
- 52:52squid game players and he hasn't died.
- 52:56So, I was like, okay, so he's in on it and it must be something.
- 53:01Yes, I was like, it has to be someone.
- 53:03We haven't seen their face yet, so, and there's only so many
- 53:07people. All that have enough clout
- 53:10within the show for them to be like that's the brother, that's
- 53:14the surprise, right? Yeah.
- 53:16And so it was very predictable to me.
- 53:20That it was the Black Mask. Dude, the front man who is
- 53:26played by evil Moon held well, like, oh my God.
- 53:33He's done. Masquerade, memories of the
- 53:36sword. Those are a couple of his
- 53:38movies. I know him from Iris.
- 53:39Do you remember recommending Iris to me?
- 53:42I remember back in the day. This guy a I remember.
- 53:46And that's one of the only drama that went on to have how many
- 53:48spin-offs like Jenna had a movie.
- 53:50Yeah it's insane. Our house.
- 53:53I know and he's also an another Netflix show.
- 53:56A Netflix original mr. Sunshine from 2018 so it's
- 54:00almost like Netflix is drawing from like its own pool of kdrama
- 54:05actors who have Richard and other Netflix shows Which is
- 54:09common for Netflix Netflix likes to push forward like the same
- 54:12rights over. And it's what's that guy doing?
- 54:15Let's go get him. Yeah, so even then is a great
- 54:19pole, a great face to have underneath the black mask.
- 54:23And again it's not really a surprise to me wasn't a surprise
- 54:27to you, but I'm sure people were very happy to see Evelyn.
- 54:33Did you expect him to shoot his brother John?
- 54:35Yes. Yeah, you did expect him to kill
- 54:37his brother and Fully he's not done.
- 54:40That's what I think do. So look, this is where I kind of
- 54:46get into the problems with the show, right?
- 54:48Because everything was going great.
- 54:50It was like an amazing mix of like, people are going to look
- 54:53at this and they're going to be fascinated by Korean culture.
- 54:55It's like, wow, they have red light green light.
- 54:57Wow! What is this dalgona thing?
- 54:59I love it. When a show can really present a
- 55:02different culture in a way where people are gonna be like, oh,
- 55:04shit, we're not that different and the things that are
- 55:07different are fascinating. And let's see what that's about.
- 55:11Now when you've been watching kdramas, as long as we have,
- 55:16that kind of like optimism is there, but it's on a different
- 55:19shelf, because when we get to the last two episodes, this show
- 55:23starts falling into the common trappings of the average kdrama,
- 55:28the same way parasite does near the end of the movie.
- 55:31Also and it's just like oh no no no no no.
- 55:36And so when the big reveal happens, I'm like, okay cool.
- 55:39But if he doesn't shoot this cop in the head We're getting a
- 55:44second season, right? That's all this is.
- 55:47So he shoots him in the arm and he falls into the water.
- 55:50We don't see him. That man is still alive.
- 55:53He's gonna be fine. He's fine.
- 55:56Like, and I don't like, I wish that there would have been more
- 56:01of a build-up because I get the, he was looking for his brother,
- 56:04but I felt like the cop was going to do something bigger, I
- 56:07guess, but I guess he didn't have the time but I guess this
- 56:10sets up the stakes for another season like okay.
- 56:13I gotta take my brother down with my Ronald McDonald 456
- 56:23player. What was the red hair?
- 56:26What was the? Oh my God.
- 56:28Okay, we're jumping all the way to the end.
- 56:29Hold on. So he obviously we don't think
- 56:32that when, you know the undercover cop played by we, we
- 56:36had you and is dead. He's gonna come back as a
- 56:39wild-card for season two. We obviously feel like Netflix
- 56:43would Stupid. If they didn't do a season 2 and
- 56:45we know Netflix, they're going to do is use it to they're
- 56:48gonna. Um, did you expect that the
- 56:50brother was a? Did you expect that the older
- 56:53brother was a 2015 Winter? No, I was expecting me because
- 57:00the rules. I think that's what I liked
- 57:02about the show. Is that we get a really
- 57:04horrifying glimpse into how long these games have been going.
- 57:07Hmm. And the motive behind creating
- 57:11the game and everything. And we look at That and it's
- 57:13like everything that they would peel back.
- 57:16Whenever the wallpaper gets peeled back, you just seem more
- 57:19stuff behind it and it just raises more questions and not
- 57:22even in an unsatisfying way, like when he goes down there and
- 57:26sees all these binders. It's like, how does any of this
- 57:28work, who's behind this? How is this organized?
- 57:32You know, is there like a system?
- 57:34Where if you win you're the new Runner of the game.
- 57:37Like there's so many theories and so much stuff going on that.
- 57:40I didn't expect that and I'm still not altogether.
- 57:42Sure. Why he was the lead of this.
- 57:48The fact that the brother was a 2015 winner and still decided to
- 57:53get on the payroll was very surprising to me and I'd love to
- 57:56know more about that. So that's something I'm looking
- 57:58forward to for season two, that they're going to.
- 58:01I hope beef up. It'd be on the news from man
- 58:05because their seat there. What the hell happened here?
- 58:07Because he witnessed all this Carnage and still came back for
- 58:11seconds and thirds and you know, he's been on the shop vac and he
- 58:15looked at that and said, this is reasonable like and he even
- 58:19alludes to that when he speaking, he's like, you know,
- 58:21these people have nowhere else to go, they don't have anything
- 58:24to do and it's kind of like in the mix of all of it.
- 58:29Somehow he survived all, I guess he's my guess, is that he
- 58:32survived all of it. Got a bit of a God complex like
- 58:35it comes back to that old Underdog Story.
- 58:38That happens here. Maybe I'm reading too much into
- 58:40it, but it's another trapping of debt cap.
- 58:43Les, I'm all the rest of it, where you have one guy who
- 58:46Against All Odds or against odds that are just so tilted against
- 58:50you that it really is luck rather than perseverance and
- 58:54then they get on top and then they look down on ever.
- 58:56Well I did it, why can't you hmm?
- 58:59Well I did it. Why shouldn't?
- 59:00Why should you guys get a leg up?
- 59:02I'm already here so I'm living proof.
- 59:03This can work. Hmm, it's awful.
- 59:06Its horrifying terrible. Do we want to talk about their
- 59:11main dude? For my sake?
- 59:13I can't because I feel like he is such a great vehicle for us
- 59:16to follow. And for the show to really put
- 59:20some put some effort in his story because I truly love song
- 59:26Yuan as a character. He's so sympathetic.
- 59:30He is basically the the homeless poor man with a heart of gold.
- 59:37Yep, on throwing through he's a bit mischievous, a little
- 59:40immature, but he's not a bad. Die.
- 59:44He knows his lot in life and he's just trying to get out and
- 59:47I feel like everyone thinks of themselves that way that they
- 59:52feel like oh they're just a punk going through life and they feel
- 59:55like everyone is a little bit mischievous like a child and is
- 59:59experiencing everything for the first time and with a kind of
- 1:00:02Wonder and open-mindedness about stuff and but still you know,
- 1:00:08doesn't want to get stolen from wants to have fun at a horse
- 1:00:12race. Gambling and not lose like all
- 1:00:15their money, but it's just kind of basic his daughter out just
- 1:00:18for a basic meal. Oh my God, that was
- 1:00:21heartbreaking. That whole thing was so
- 1:00:23heartbreaking for us to see him. Taking his daughter out.
- 1:00:26He had the best intentions, he won that money and he signs a
- 1:00:31blood contract gets the money stolen.
- 1:00:34He's Jack, his face is busted and he has to take his daughter
- 1:00:38out for street food. They end up having like a
- 1:00:40bookie. Oh my gosh.
- 1:00:43And it's Western she's like it's okay, it's okay.
- 1:00:46My mom doesn't let me junk food anymore.
- 1:00:48So this is a treat for me and I was like Western audiences.
- 1:00:51Don't really understand that. Fuck bookie is street food,
- 1:00:55right? It's cheap kids have it after
- 1:00:57school. It's not a fancy meal.
- 1:01:00It's not expensive. This is like the least amount
- 1:01:03that he can do. Like, what is an equivalent of
- 1:01:05that for us? Like all y'all I Were King.
- 1:01:09Mcdonald would be, you know what it would be?
- 1:01:11It would be like chicken nuggets and fries.
- 1:01:13It wouldn't even be a burger. Like that would be like nuggets
- 1:01:15and fries or just all are many 20 piece of nuggets.
- 1:01:19Like here in the states, you'll probably see that like in an
- 1:01:23Asian fusion restaurant like in a tiny fancy little black bowl
- 1:01:27with some chives on it for nine dollars, that's not the case.
- 1:01:30Look he's like a dollar. Fifty two bucks for this bowl of
- 1:01:33just it's just rice cake covered in sauce.
- 1:01:36It really just doesn't get any more basic than us.
- 1:01:39So equivalent here is like not even fry shows, here's some
- 1:01:42nuggets. It's, there's your drinking,
- 1:01:44it's, it's very sad and it really lets you understand where
- 1:01:50he's coming from, that he is struggling so much.
- 1:01:53He's got to borrow money from his asshole, ex-wife's, husband.
- 1:01:59Now, like it's it's wild. You really feel for that
- 1:02:03character and I appreciate that, even though it's very obvious
- 1:02:06that he will live to win the game, that he's a Worthy.
- 1:02:13Winner. He's very worthy and I love the
- 1:02:16thing that really nailed me on his character from the beginning
- 1:02:19was when all of the players are getting their photo taken.
- 1:02:23And he puts like this big cheesy smile and they go to, like, the
- 1:02:28hexagon where all of the photos aren't everyone looks all stoic
- 1:02:31or scared, or crying, or angry, or determine.
- 1:02:34And he's just there with this big light shining smile, like,
- 1:02:38huh? Like I'm here?
- 1:02:40Yeah. It's, he's very nice.
- 1:02:43Naive. And he's very simplistic.
- 1:02:44He sees the world in black and white, and I think we'd all like
- 1:02:47to be that way to still very childish, and he's built in an
- 1:02:52innocent way. Just like, I love when it comes
- 1:02:55down between him and the asshole who we can just call him the
- 1:02:58asshole because okay. That's really.
- 1:03:00Yeah, hmm. Yeah.
- 1:03:03The pride and joy of their town, which all they kept referring
- 1:03:06them to. I love that even when it comes
- 1:03:10time to be face-to-face, playing the actual Good game, you know,
- 1:03:15again is just like, okay, that's it.
- 1:03:17Like we don't want to play anymore like like we don't want
- 1:03:21to play anymore and nobody has to die.
- 1:03:24And up until the very end, you know, is just like trying but
- 1:03:28doesn't work but it's an Everyman complex that works like
- 1:03:32for the show like you can relate to them or you want to be him so
- 1:03:37Samuel. I do want to touch on this as
- 1:03:40that he was suicidal. Yes, he was in the middle of
- 1:03:45committing suicide when they knocked on his door and gave him
- 1:03:48the squid. Game card for round two.
- 1:03:51Right to come back to the games. And in my mind I'm like okay
- 1:03:56they just telegraphed how he's going to die, he's either going
- 1:03:59to die in the games or he's going to commit suicide which
- 1:04:02was his original intention. He's already suicidal.
- 1:04:06And that's exactly what happened like your they're faced with one
- 1:04:11of them has to win. They tried to Hunger Games, it
- 1:04:14with we can both be the winner or we can both leave, right.
- 1:04:17We can end this thing because it's a majority vote for ending
- 1:04:21the games. All he needs to do is say Us,
- 1:04:24all you need to do is say yes to live to live and it wasn't it
- 1:04:29wasn't enough for him to just say or I would you go back that
- 1:04:33was relieved. Yeah.
- 1:04:34Right. That was exactly what he was
- 1:04:37because he lived with no winnings.
- 1:04:40He was going to commit suicide before going back into the game.
- 1:04:43So I was like the circumstances for the same, he's gonna kill
- 1:04:45himself and the really just messed up part is that if they
- 1:04:51both would have left and even got in part of the prize, or if
- 1:04:54only one of them got in it, they both still would have won
- 1:04:56because gay and would have given them like, more than half.
- 1:04:59If not, all of it are like a ton of it.
- 1:05:01Yeah. Like so, but the rules were
- 1:05:03never made clear about what happens if they both walk away.
- 1:05:06Well, if they both thought they were both walk away.
- 1:05:09All that money goes toward those that died.
- 1:05:12Yeah, I still don't believe that.
- 1:05:14That's going to be the case though.
- 1:05:15Like so the first I do I do feel like that is the case because
- 1:05:20the entirety of the game was predicated on fairness.
- 1:05:24Mmm and see if a we get like a sudden windfall out of nowhere.
- 1:05:28Exactly. So they were religious about
- 1:05:31everyone having the same playing on the same Fairfield and I
- 1:05:37totally believe that these squid game amorphous beings that have
- 1:05:43created this game would, in fact, give 40 billion 12, all of
- 1:05:49these hundreds of people that died.
- 1:05:52In fact, if they're worried at all, All like actually shocked
- 1:05:55me. I got to be honest, like the
- 1:05:57fact that they gave him a card in the end at all blew my mind.
- 1:06:01I had a feeling they were going to just throw him out in that.
- 1:06:03Was it like haha, just kidding. It was all for nothing.
- 1:06:06Like I think it's that cynicism that comes with.
- 1:06:09You know, what are you promised by someone who can give you so
- 1:06:12much more like they don't have to deliver who's ever going to
- 1:06:15believe this guy, we could ditch him in the middle of the street
- 1:06:18and he'll ramble all his life about how he was kidnapped in
- 1:06:20the amount of trust that these people have to have in.
- 1:06:24In B's faceless. People is incredible.
- 1:06:28I mean, they literally have nothing to lose.
- 1:06:31No. And they don't accept and speak.
- 1:06:33They only speak what their guns. Like, we need to get out of here
- 1:06:38and nope, they're just standing there with their gun, nothing.
- 1:06:42I don't think we addressed this but forty five point.
- 1:06:44Six billion. One is thirty eight point, seven
- 1:06:49million dollars u.s. dollars. Yeah, that's a lot that's a lot.
- 1:06:54I mean I can't even I can't even spend a million dollars.
- 1:06:57So and it's how quantifiable is that?
- 1:07:00Like basically all of these people's lives in the end was
- 1:07:06worth this. It's like, oh yeah if you divide
- 1:07:10what is it? Thirty eight point seven million
- 1:07:11dollars by 455. Yeah.
- 1:07:16Then that's the value of each player.
- 1:07:20What a mess it It's great though.
- 1:07:23But it's can we talk about the upper echelon like that VIP
- 1:07:26Club? That?
- 1:07:27Yes, that was where I was going next.
- 1:07:29Tell me. What do you want to say about
- 1:07:30VIP? That was the biggest.
- 1:07:33I had a surreal moment with this.
- 1:07:36So, the first thing that I saw about this was like, oh, of
- 1:07:38course. All right.
- 1:07:39Like, you know what I mean? Like, I hate to say it, but
- 1:07:42squid game now lives as headcanon for me when I see
- 1:07:46people who go missing mysteriously.
- 1:07:47Oh, that's what I believe is happening.
- 1:07:49You know, you see things like Jeffrey Epstein's Island.
- 1:07:53You see things like and it's like, you know what?
- 1:07:55This is starting to make sense now and I don't mean that in a
- 1:07:58way to like make light. I'm just saying this is a very
- 1:08:01thorough piece of fiction. That makes perfect sense on way
- 1:08:07too many levels. So when the VIP show up I'm like
- 1:08:10that makes sense. These would be the CEO's that
- 1:08:12this that that covered in Moss. A little bit on the nose, you
- 1:08:15know, the whole Eyes Wide Shut mask thing was like a big batch
- 1:08:19that was. I felt the same way.
- 1:08:20Yeah. Like one day came in.
- 1:08:22Two, I got two things out of that.
- 1:08:23The first thing was, like, it was a little, it was a little,
- 1:08:27you know, whatever, very Bond villain ish but I'll let that
- 1:08:29slide. But the other thing that I
- 1:08:31didn't expect to feel was, like, I've gotten to know, like, all
- 1:08:35of these players and like this cool playpen.
- 1:08:39And when they show up, it's kind of like, when your parents come
- 1:08:42to pick you up from summer camp, where that whole like, oh, it's
- 1:08:46just you and your friends, nobody else exists.
- 1:08:49It's like, oh, the parents are here like their In the show and
- 1:08:53showing the sadism how much they were enjoying these players,
- 1:08:56dying pulled me out of the show but not in a bad way.
- 1:09:00It just made me empathize and sympathize with the players even
- 1:09:03more. Yeah, and it's really my hatred
- 1:09:06towards the VIP and the staff way more like Amplified all my
- 1:09:11feelings across the board, right?
- 1:09:13Um it just made me think. Of course, this is about the low
- 1:09:17class being exploited for the upper class for sport for
- 1:09:21entertainment. Which was my guest, the whole
- 1:09:24time, right? Yeah, was just confirmation for
- 1:09:26me at first. I thought that the games were
- 1:09:30like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Willy Wonka and the
- 1:09:34Chocolate Factory, where these gains are happening.
- 1:09:39And the winner is going to basically inherit some sort of
- 1:09:43Empire. Yeah.
- 1:09:45But it wasn't, but it wasn't that, maybe maybe not yet not
- 1:09:51yet. We had yeah.
- 1:09:54But yeah, they bet money on them like horses or Greyhounds and
- 1:09:58they got annoyed. When their favorite player lost
- 1:10:00versus, they weren't upset that the loss of life.
- 1:10:04They were upset that their player was out of the game.
- 1:10:08Then they were information to like they had the information.
- 1:10:11Like, the glass pane game, I found very interesting because
- 1:10:14one of the last standing players was looking at the glass.
- 1:10:17He's like, I worked in a glass factory for 30 years, I can tell
- 1:10:20the difference between tempered glass and fragile glass.
- 1:10:22Gasps and seeing the VIP members?
- 1:10:25Hey, isn't that your guy? Yeah, this information was in
- 1:10:28his binder, I didn't even read that.
- 1:10:30Damn, it, I should have bet on him and it's like, yo, like the
- 1:10:35extent to which those like VIPs disregarded, the humanity of the
- 1:10:38players is incredible to me. Yeah, it was depraved.
- 1:10:44And what about the voices though?
- 1:10:46That was awful, that was awful. That what English-speaking was
- 1:10:51not so good. Was just robotic.
- 1:10:55It was robotic and out of. But I did read why I found out
- 1:10:58why today actually girl. So when it comes down to it,
- 1:11:03adding English and this is it may sound like a generalization.
- 1:11:07But I've read enough about where it's like, okay, this seems like
- 1:11:10it's a thing as far as I can tell.
- 1:11:12It's a thing where the actors that are being pulled in our
- 1:11:17models who are biracial or their white who live in Korea already
- 1:11:21and it's like oh let's get that. Guy, he speaks English and
- 1:11:24that's fine. But the reason they can't
- 1:11:26deliver the lines isn't necessarily because they're poor
- 1:11:29actors, but because they're giving no context to the scenes.
- 1:11:32Just like here's these lines read them.
- 1:11:34So that's why the conversations were like hey, you bet on that
- 1:11:37one, right? Hahaha, and the other person's
- 1:11:40like, yeah, I totally did that on that one.
- 1:11:43Like it didn't feel like a natural conversation.
- 1:11:46So they were just blindly given their lines.
- 1:11:48Also, they were so far apart the characters couldn't For each
- 1:11:52other. So they were literally shouting.
- 1:11:55That's why it sounds like they're shouting.
- 1:11:57Gosh it's a mess but the really creepy fat guy, who tries to
- 1:12:02sexually assault if you can, please me in the next five
- 1:12:07minutes. Yeah that was a whole thing that
- 1:12:11was a whole thing but in real life it turns out.
- 1:12:13He's actually not like that. Like not a criminal but he's
- 1:12:16just as boisterous in real life. They asked him what he thought
- 1:12:18about the role. He's like, I've gotten so much
- 1:12:20fan mail, everyone loves me. He's literally like that in real
- 1:12:24life. You living.
- 1:12:26Oh my gosh, he's like I got to do suitors both male and female.
- 1:12:30I didn't and I was like oh my God.
- 1:12:41Yeah that whole thing. The view peas are just meant to
- 1:12:46juxtapose against the players. They care.
- 1:12:49Nothing of the billions. Billions of one pot that the
- 1:12:54players so desperately need and waswe Tuesday for them.
- 1:12:57Yeah, I'm gonna day all in a day.
- 1:13:01It's very casual nonchalant. When this is over, they're going
- 1:13:04back to their wherever they came from like it's nothing.
- 1:13:08So I think at this point, we got to talk about the ending and
- 1:13:12Willy, Wonka /, the man behind the curtain.
- 1:13:16Because we've mentioned him before this had about the
- 1:13:22players user 1. Yeah, I already listed that he
- 1:13:27was too eager to like play this game.
- 1:13:30He somehow survived the massacre night where it was like the
- 1:13:34strobing effect happening. Yeah, somehow.
- 1:13:39He got all the way up from. How exactly he meaningfully
- 1:13:45gives player 456 his jacket and says people will look down on
- 1:13:50him if he's not wearing his jacket, which is something that
- 1:13:54someone only of an upper Ash Onward to put focus on Legit.
- 1:13:58The context of it's like, yeah, I know, we're fighting for our
- 1:14:02lives, but your hair. You know what I mean?
- 1:14:05Yeah, that's not something people of their class say, yeah,
- 1:14:09it wasn't precise, stand up straight.
- 1:14:13When you're killing someone, I get it.
- 1:14:18We're fighting to the death, but posture, that sounds like
- 1:14:21something old money would ask us, you're killing him ago,
- 1:14:25Okay. So So in the gumbo episode, he's
- 1:14:29having his dementia episode and he finally ends up at this house
- 1:14:34and inside outside this house, there's this squid game symbols.
- 1:14:38Hmm. And I'm like, that's a dead
- 1:14:40giveaway to yeah. Yeah.
- 1:14:43And he was lying convincingly that they are as your house.
- 1:14:47He was lying convincingly throughout the marbles game
- 1:14:50pretending to have dementia. Letting him con him out of his
- 1:14:54marbles. It's just like, okay, so he's
- 1:14:58very comfortable with lying. He also says, it's only fair
- 1:15:03when he proposes that we, they should do all or nothing for the
- 1:15:06marbles. Yeah.
- 1:15:08So he's obsessed with fairness. All of a sudden.
- 1:15:11Yeah. Reasoning.
- 1:15:12Quality into the fairness and equality that they're given like
- 1:15:15by down, but then like there's enough clues that even if you
- 1:15:18didn't like I wouldn't blame anyone for not seeing it coming
- 1:15:22and if you completely shut off your brain, like there's enough
- 1:15:25clues in there. Where you can still logically
- 1:15:27piece it together by a certain point.
- 1:15:29Hmm But the game I think is the dead giveaway when he's like, oh
- 1:15:33and you think it's okay to fool an old man like he dragged him
- 1:15:36through that whole game. But also what about Wonder on
- 1:15:40the outside and he just shows up like in the second episode.
- 1:15:45He's like oh you want to share some soup and a whiskey?
- 1:15:48It's like, oh, we're just in the neighborhood.
- 1:15:51Yeah, he look, he's lived in. This neighborhood isn't I.
- 1:15:53GM has in this neighborhood, his entire life for In squalor to
- 1:15:57where he is now. And never, once, he's seen this
- 1:16:01guy, except for this one like no, like, like we can stop now.
- 1:16:05Like the, the dude, the front man says, on the phone, I'm
- 1:16:09happy to hear you enjoy the game.
- 1:16:11Like that's just after the old man was killed air quotes.
- 1:16:18It's like, okay, I'm sorry if you were, you didn't see it.
- 1:16:23But again, I feel like it was very obvious.
- 1:16:26He is the the ringleader, the man behind the curtain Willy
- 1:16:29Wonka, he is the creator of the squid game.
- 1:16:34Yeah, yes. I know which Joker.
- 1:16:41Moment, he has the Joker moment, like, for in the dark night when
- 1:16:45which, I've always hated the same because it's so
- 1:16:46unrealistic. But, you know, let's go for it,
- 1:16:48Humanity, morality whatever, where they give the two boats, a
- 1:16:52boat full of convicts like a button, it'll detonate a soluble
- 1:16:56God. What are the civilians of
- 1:16:58button? That'll blow up the prisoners.
- 1:17:00Yeah. And Humanity overwhelms them and
- 1:17:02they both just they Cast Away the.
- 1:17:05Yes, the he did. And that's the same thing.
- 1:17:07He tries to make actually what he did in the final epic
- 1:17:11miniseries. So the show really, he's asking
- 1:17:15the question, do you still trust people?
- 1:17:17After all that you've been through?
- 1:17:19Do you still believe in the inherent good of humanity and
- 1:17:23just like dark night? The villain is proven wrong.
- 1:17:27Yeah, you know, everybody steps over on one person, who looks
- 1:17:31like, they go away, they get a cop.
- 1:17:33They save his life and we still don't know if the old guy was
- 1:17:38actually alive to see it like that.
- 1:17:40Part is left ambiguous. Us again says like no, you saw
- 1:17:44it and that's why you're dead. I hope.
- 1:17:46Yeah. He's like yeah, you lost.
- 1:17:48Yeah, he bet his life on this thing, which didn't quite factor
- 1:17:54in the same way that the squid game does because he was already
- 1:17:57on his deathbed. But yeah, he basically says that
- 1:18:01the rich developed squid game because they were bored and
- 1:18:05wanted to have some little money or too much, you get.
- 1:18:07Miserable is their whole idea and it's like the thing.
- 1:18:11That they played it that way because they kind of took an old
- 1:18:15Trope and they put it on its head, in the mind of this old
- 1:18:19person. Like, all of this makes perfect
- 1:18:22sense, right? And and he's handing it down to
- 1:18:25gion like the way a grandparent would hand it down to their
- 1:18:27grandchild. Like, you know you know when you
- 1:18:31have too much money it just gets really hard and I want to thank
- 1:18:34you because you know, without an ounce of cynicism, you showed me
- 1:18:38what it was like to have fun and he's like, everyone I know is
- 1:18:40dead. All of these people are dead.
- 1:18:43These very real. Yeah.
- 1:18:44But you showed me how to have fun and you're still a good
- 1:18:49person. And it's like, that's not the
- 1:18:51takeaway old man. Like all these people died.
- 1:18:54He's so twisted and morbid. That he says he had this was the
- 1:18:59most fun that he'd ever had in in such a long time and that he
- 1:19:05left you and Alive. Because he had fun playing with
- 1:19:08him, and he doesn't even think him like Thanks, I'm in Earnest,
- 1:19:12like not even in spite of the people who died, not even in
- 1:19:15spite of jian's experience. He like recognizes that they're
- 1:19:18dead, but he also recognizes. But the important thing is that
- 1:19:22you showed me how to have fun again, and I can't believe I got
- 1:19:26to get that before I died. Like we're supposed to be like,
- 1:19:28oh well, I'm glad I, you know, your nieces, he had your whole
- 1:19:32Make-a-Wish moment and you have like, you know what I mean?
- 1:19:35Like right here. Like, and I was just like, this
- 1:19:37isn't, this isn't a heartwarming, what's going on?
- 1:19:40Like Yeah, my God, I hate that he almost insinuates that he
- 1:19:45doesn't need squid game anymore to feel alive because there's
- 1:19:49nothing like the experience of being in the game, right?
- 1:19:53At this point, if he would have carried on, living forget it,
- 1:19:56like he would have invented even worse games so they would have a
- 1:19:59front row. It's and I think that plays back
- 1:20:02to being rich, right? It comes back to all those
- 1:20:05anecdotes. Oh well and you know I do I'm
- 1:20:07not meaning to get political but just in the general stories, you
- 1:20:10get of like that. Anecdote When I came to London,
- 1:20:13I only had two things, a dream and fifty million pounds.
- 1:20:17It comes back to that idea, right?
- 1:20:19Like, oh, this nameless, Ultra billionaire, who owns.
- 1:20:23The one of the biggest companies in the world, you know, they
- 1:20:26started off on the Lower East Side, all they had was an
- 1:20:29endorsement from their dad and their dad's friend of 30 million
- 1:20:32dollars to go. Okay.
- 1:20:34Like, they live in such a skewed world and this old man and has
- 1:20:37to like it's of course, he recognizes it as fun because for
- 1:20:41him. It is fun.
- 1:20:42And there are no Stakes. No he's not gonna lose that
- 1:20:44game. He is not going to die the
- 1:20:47players or the the crew would sooner reveal.
- 1:20:52The fact that he is not an average player than to let him
- 1:20:57die. Hmm.
- 1:20:58So there was no of course he had fun.
- 1:21:00There was no Stakes. Yeah of course.
- 1:21:04Typical playground rich people stuff.
- 1:21:06It's too much. Did you like that?
- 1:21:08And I think I liked it. I think that that That I like,
- 1:21:11first of all, I expected it. But I enjoyed this ending, you
- 1:21:16know? I did too.
- 1:21:17I did too. I like that.
- 1:21:18It happened in the confines of I think what I like the most about
- 1:21:24it is that it happened in the confines of a very quiet room
- 1:21:28where it's only two of them. Like, it's a very interesting
- 1:21:33Placid exchange between two people and I think that's what
- 1:21:37really drove the point home. And they did that very well,
- 1:21:41what I found, interesting what, yeah, that's what I found
- 1:21:45interesting. Is that the old man was so rich
- 1:21:49that he was placed in this This empty gigantic floor of a
- 1:21:55high-rise building with his hospital bed and his oxygen and
- 1:22:00a front row seat to death. I mean, it was still very morbid
- 1:22:07and luxurious and yeah amazing. It's so well done.
- 1:22:15It's so. So well done.
- 1:22:18Like he's just sitting up there kicking like oh, all right.
- 1:22:21Yeah, this floor is mine. Maybe the buildings is like, who
- 1:22:25knows? Who knows what was the tower
- 1:22:27called? It was a big company to.
- 1:22:29Oh, I can't give us a telecommunications company and
- 1:22:32it's a real company in real life which I found interesting.
- 1:22:35But we haven't talked about one major, dude, and it was the
- 1:22:39suit, man, going. You going in with the subway
- 1:22:46Algona? That was like with a little
- 1:22:50card. Flipping game.
- 1:22:51Yes. So, I don't I've seen a few
- 1:22:58memes of this that I love like that.
- 1:23:01I love. But the one that stands out is
- 1:23:04squid game, if it happened in the Bronx, and it's a woman
- 1:23:08sitting there with her, she's sitting there with him with a
- 1:23:11pair of Tim's, you know, the whole train platform is empty,
- 1:23:14she's sitting there with her, you know, her puffy jacket,
- 1:23:16whatever. It's just like and the the same
- 1:23:19woman comes over in a suit, very manicured, excuse me, stop.
- 1:23:25No, I'm good. I'm good.
- 1:23:26I saw this one. Can I talk to you?
- 1:23:30I said, get out of here. Do you want to play a game a
- 1:23:35game? What do I look like saw?
- 1:23:38No, I need a car. I need a mysterious man.
- 1:23:42Yeah, that's excellent. The means and the spoofs are
- 1:23:45hysterical. But what would you do if that
- 1:23:47man approached you like, oh no, I would you like to play a game
- 1:23:50with me Wyatt know? Absolutely not, we're not doing
- 1:23:55this. He's a he's a model for Ralph
- 1:23:59Lauren right now. Well, God is doing great.
- 1:24:02People are simple after this man.
- 1:24:04Again, he's coffee prince Again, cast goblet.
- 1:24:11Yeah. The cotton, the casting of
- 1:24:13gwangju I think, is part /, very sharp orderly manner, only kind
- 1:24:19of creepy. But disarming enough, where you
- 1:24:22can kind of look past, It if you're desperate enough.
- 1:24:24Yeah. Incredible.
- 1:24:26And this is a reunions with him and the director because he's
- 1:24:29the star of the movie, silenced. Yeah.
- 1:24:32In the director of this squid game wrote and directed that
- 1:24:36movie. So it's almost like a Scorsese
- 1:24:39type of thing happening. It's like a homecoming thing
- 1:24:41working. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but he's a
- 1:24:44fantastic Cameo. He had a fantastic area, he did
- 1:24:50a great job with the parts. I love at least.
- 1:24:53Make very again at the end of the movie, that little wave that
- 1:24:58terrifying Little Wave. Like, you're never gonna see me
- 1:25:00again and even if you do, what are you gonna do?
- 1:25:03Like so you mentioned the red hair.
- 1:25:06I don't know what the hell is up with that?
- 1:25:08I don't to me that's the equivalent of that Trope when a
- 1:25:13woman in a movie goes to like a traumatic event and then chops
- 1:25:17off all their hair and smears their lipstick and punches the
- 1:25:19mirror. I guess that's what they were
- 1:25:22going for I guess. But when he or I guess they were
- 1:25:25trying to go with, you know, fine.
- 1:25:29He's feeling at the end of his rope, he doesn't care about
- 1:25:31anything. Sure, give me the feminine.
- 1:25:32Red hair cut, like, what the Marcille swoop and everything,
- 1:25:36whatever it doesn't work for me. It didn't work and I can fit the
- 1:25:40character Hilda. No, not at all, like maybe blue,
- 1:25:44maybe purple, maybe like shave the head, like all the way back
- 1:25:48or in. Yeah, I was thinking.
- 1:25:50Oh, maybe. He'll just be clean shaven with
- 1:25:52a Are here at the but no, he goes with.
- 1:25:57It's not even a stylish. Red eye looks like such a young
- 1:26:02haircut on such an old. It looks like Kpop friend.
- 1:26:07It's, yeah, it's Kpop. Revlon, red.
- 1:26:10Just like boom. Like, and it didn't, I, I didn't
- 1:26:15like that because I could forgive so much about the end.
- 1:26:20I could forgive the reveal that it was his brother because it
- 1:26:22was a very big actor. Do you know the cop finds his oh
- 1:26:25the cop? Well yeah, the front I can
- 1:26:27forgive the obvious player. 0 0, 1 is in, on it, I can forgive
- 1:26:31that, I can forgive him adopting the kid and having a whole
- 1:26:36Keanu. Reeves, John Wick moment of
- 1:26:41leaving the suitcase of cash. His, you know, his mother passed
- 1:26:44away. There's nothing left for him.
- 1:26:47In this town, I'm getting my bag and I'm leaving.
- 1:26:50I can deal with all of that, right?
- 1:26:52Find their cliches. To the wall.
- 1:26:54But the red hair pulls me out of all of that, like, I can't take
- 1:27:00any of it seriously at all. And I resent that like, I still
- 1:27:06love the show, but it's spoiled those moments where it's like,
- 1:27:09oh my God. He's reuniting with the North
- 1:27:13Korean girls brother like, oh my God, he did right by her.
- 1:27:17But then, you know, looks pretty can't take that seriously
- 1:27:19because he looks like a clown. He looks like a McDonald's is
- 1:27:22just about Big fucking hat. It like, you know, if it doesn't
- 1:27:28work, it doesn't work for hey, he's like an about up up up his
- 1:27:33way, back into the game. Yes.
- 1:27:37So we definitely are going to have a season 2.
- 1:27:39They, yeah, because he doesn't get on a plane to the u.s. to
- 1:27:42see his daughter. He decides, he's going to
- 1:27:44dismantle The Hunger Games from the inside.
- 1:27:47So we're going to have Catching Fire.
- 1:27:49I'm next season and we only winners in the in the Squid
- 1:27:54game. We're gonna play.
- 1:27:57Yeah, I want to do something cheap and bring back.
- 1:27:59Some of the Dead characters. I wait quit.
- 1:28:02I could see it could. No, see it.
- 1:28:04I can see it. This is not there to reasons why
- 1:28:07they are not going to bring back the same.
- 1:28:09Are you sure like? Oh, they thought they burned me,
- 1:28:12but this cop is steeped in the nick of time and undid the
- 1:28:17furnace because the timeline matches up with that, right?
- 1:28:20He could have just gone back in and like Shut it.
- 1:28:23They it's a Korean drama people come back from bone marrow
- 1:28:27transplants. So they're gonna be fine.
- 1:28:30Like I definitely think the only person that we're going to see
- 1:28:32come back from the dead is the cop.
- 1:28:40The phone calls coming from the bottom of the trench.
- 1:28:45It's gonna be as a phone call to Darth Vader.
- 1:28:47Is going to pick up the phone and Trace the call.
- 1:28:49It's coming from inside the room.
- 1:28:55Okay, I think we're done. Or do you have anything else you
- 1:28:57want to say about squid game? Um, I'm trying to say, I think I
- 1:29:01had a couple of stray observations.
- 1:29:03Okay, one of them was it was something that really unsettled
- 1:29:09me. I wasn't the dog.
- 1:29:10Oh nothing. Oh well, yeah, something that I
- 1:29:12found interesting, were the characters cheated on some of
- 1:29:16the games and they just made it through like, ultimately, their
- 1:29:20fate caught up with them, but I'm convinced that, you know,
- 1:29:23No, they knew that they were cheating.
- 1:29:24Yeah, like there was no way that they're using a lighter and a
- 1:29:28needle, and all this other stuff.
- 1:29:29Like they knew we didn't talk about the whole.
- 1:29:36It was that organ ring resealing.
- 1:29:41Yeah. That threw me off the organ
- 1:29:42harvesting thing. Like the I guess we can call the
- 1:29:47moderators or the game Runners were like running their own.
- 1:29:50Little side project selling organ to the Chinese.
- 1:29:54I don't, I mean, it's plausible but it was kind of such a red
- 1:30:00herring of a motive and it took up almost an entire episode
- 1:30:03because we thought oh they're being killed for this and its
- 1:30:06really much simpler than that it's like no this is literally
- 1:30:09just a chance to win. It was for the cops storyline
- 1:30:13because they were like, oh there was a dude in here that only had
- 1:30:18one kidney Yeah, and it's like he was like other who was that
- 1:30:24that you killed and took their kidney so sauce.
- 1:30:28Yeah, that whole thing was really gross.
- 1:30:32There was a moment that I really loved and it was God.
- 1:30:37It was when guess against kept introducing, the other guys.
- 1:30:41So he was the one who went to this University and he's the
- 1:30:45pride and joy of this town and this he basically went to
- 1:30:47Harvard, right? Yeah.
- 1:30:49So when he gets in a Indians face about like, oh, you know we
- 1:30:52need to we all had a chance and we all did this and we all did I
- 1:30:56and Ian responds? It's like that's really
- 1:30:57interesting. And you say all that and you say
- 1:30:59that you're the pride and joy of this town and you're well-read
- 1:31:02and educated but you're still in here with the rest of us.
- 1:31:05Mmm-hmm. I found that exchange to be
- 1:31:07really powerful because he tells the first time he ever heard
- 1:31:10that in his life it's like yeah that all may be true but you're
- 1:31:14still here right? Why are you still here?
- 1:31:16Owe me? You got out.
- 1:31:18Yeah you're so much better than the rest of us and yet you know
- 1:31:22like it's I thought that was interesting.
- 1:31:25I thought the show just has so much to say and every time you
- 1:31:31like re watch an episode or if you like you're gonna catch
- 1:31:34something each time like I planned.
- 1:31:36Re-watching, this really soon. Oh, yeah.
- 1:31:39But I, I just, I don't know. I really liked it.
- 1:31:44If it wasn't for the red hair, this show would be perfect.
- 1:31:48But I really enjoyed it, Fred here.
- 1:31:52Okay, I had one stray observation, and it was on the
- 1:31:56marbles gumbo episode that the alley set that they were on
- 1:32:01looked identical to the reply 1988 set.
- 1:32:06Where the entirety of reply 1988 takes place on like this Ally
- 1:32:11of? Yeah, we're all these bi
- 1:32:13characters, live and reply. 1988 is like a comfort drama for a
- 1:32:18lot of people. It is so easy to watch and fun
- 1:32:25and heartwarming, right? So, even the players when they
- 1:32:30get out onto the alley set there, like I used to live on an
- 1:32:36ally. Like this insole and it was so
- 1:32:38much fun and we used to play and they were having the Reminiscing
- 1:32:43on their time as children living in this kind of neighborhood.
- 1:32:48Yeah, and again it's turned on its on its head because they
- 1:32:53they start dying in the streets and the sky is like this
- 1:32:56horrifyingly a million shade like where it looks like.
- 1:33:01It looks like a thunderstorm just passed but the sun's going
- 1:33:03down like it's an ugly. Big red.
- 1:33:07Oh, what about this? Other chick, the, the girl was
- 1:33:12her name. She only she was really only in
- 1:33:15like two episodes. The one we took method.
- 1:33:19Yes. The girl that pairs off with the
- 1:33:21North Korean for the marbles. Yes.
- 1:33:23Yes. Okay.
- 1:33:24Yes. That that girl is pretty chill.
- 1:33:27That was Rachel. The fact that she just like
- 1:33:29basically sacrificed herself that was very emotional for me.
- 1:33:34That was her and Ali In that episode basically wrecked me.
- 1:33:39Oh yeah. When they're like, what are you
- 1:33:41doing throughout Lake? The North Korean goes like, what
- 1:33:43are you doing? Throw the marble and she's like,
- 1:33:45you kept asking me? What am I going to do?
- 1:33:48When I get out of here? And I've been thinking about
- 1:33:49that for the last 40 minutes and nothing comes to mind, got
- 1:33:53nothing to live for and the North Korean girl, gets like mad
- 1:33:57at her, just like really angry because it's like, no, you're
- 1:34:00basically making me kill you. She's like, that's it.
- 1:34:03The game is over. Like he won.
- 1:34:05It's like, no, no, no. Maybe they do make it for Jeju
- 1:34:10Island. I hope that they pull something
- 1:34:13like this. Whole dying thing just wasn't
- 1:34:15working for me. Like, is he really a feel for
- 1:34:18the characters? You want them to live but I
- 1:34:22don't know how they're going to do it in the next one.
- 1:34:24Like cuz this cast was really good, like really good but I
- 1:34:31want to know who's running the games.
- 1:34:33Now that the old man is the Creator's.
- 1:34:35Dad, he's gone, right? Yeah.
- 1:34:37So He said come to the brain tumor.
- 1:34:42Wow! You think it was left to the
- 1:34:432015 event comes back. Do you think it was left to the
- 1:34:47front man? I think so.
- 1:34:49Is he Charlie? Was he is.
- 1:34:52Oh my gosh. I was so right.
- 1:34:56The 2015 winner was Charlie and he inherited the Chocolate
- 1:34:59Factory. Xtq keep saying Willy Wonka and
- 1:35:02now in the next movie I want a lump has, like I wait, Korean
- 1:35:05Oompa-Loompa sequence. A Blank Range, just dragging
- 1:35:10them away. Okay.
- 1:35:14That was, that was what I thought happened to the very
- 1:35:16spunky girl, like when they were, she's like, no, I need my
- 1:35:18partner, I need my heart, we should have known, she wasn't
- 1:35:22dead when we didn't hear a gunshot or something, but
- 1:35:24whatever, it's fine. Yeah, water under the bridge.
- 1:35:27All right. So, thank you so much for
- 1:35:30welcoming us going on this journey with me.
- 1:35:33Talking about squid game ago. This was so much fun, and I'm
- 1:35:37glad we got it off our chests. I was looking Forward to this
- 1:35:39episode because I had so many thoughts that I had to get down
- 1:35:43and I didn't want to write them, I just wanted to talk.
- 1:35:45Yes, I'm racing with you. I had a great time.
- 1:35:50The show was amazing. Like I haven't talked about this
- 1:35:54with anybody yet, so yes. Thank you.
