- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome back and everybody to GM territory. And this is
- 0:09Speaker 1: a late episode, but for a great reason. Ark Scoobel
- 0:12Speaker 1: is an LA Dodger. Jim, what is your reaction to this?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, huge trade. I wish I could tell you I'm surprised,
- 0:18Speaker 2: but I'm not. I thought he would end up with
- 0:20Speaker 2: either the Dodgers or the Brewers, and the deal finally
- 0:23Speaker 2: got done to the Los Angeles Dodgers. So obviously for
- 0:27Speaker 2: the Dodgers, we're going to give them an eight plus.
- 0:29Speaker 2: They got the best pitcher that was available. The best
- 0:31Speaker 2: player that gets traded at this deadline goes to the
- 0:34Speaker 2: Dodgers as the rich get richer. As we all know,
- 0:36Speaker 2: the Dodgers have won two consecutive World Series. They were
- 0:39Speaker 2: the favorites to win a third consecutive World Series before
- 0:42Speaker 2: this trade. Of course, Schooble has won the Cy Young
- 0:45Speaker 2: each of the last two years. So to be able
- 0:47Speaker 2: to add School Bowl to the top of their rotation.
- 0:49Speaker 2: He and Yashinobu Yamamoto to be able to pitch games
- 0:52Speaker 2: one and two of a postseason series makes it dominant.
- 0:56Speaker 2: You know, the Dodgers have dealt with some injuries to
- 0:58Speaker 2: their rotation, this hyear year they've had injury showy Otani
- 1:01Speaker 2: with the knee injury, Blake Snell's had injuries, so is
- 1:04Speaker 2: Tyler Glass now. But all of them should be healthy
- 1:08Speaker 2: well by the time they get to October. We get
- 1:10Speaker 2: which gives them real five really good starters. And I
- 1:12Speaker 2: didn't even count on Justin Robleski and Evan Shean. So look,
- 1:16Speaker 2: this Dodger pitching staff is going to be seven deep
- 1:19Speaker 2: by the time they get October. Some of these guys
- 1:21Speaker 2: will go to the bullpen, but the Dodgers heavy, heavy
- 1:24Speaker 2: favorites to win again. On the other side of this deal,
- 1:27Speaker 2: Trey I really did like it from the Tiger's side,
- 1:32Speaker 2: you know, given the fact they gave up a two
- 1:33Speaker 2: month renoal in Schoogle to be able to get three
- 1:37Speaker 2: top prospects back, it's a good return. I'll give them
- 1:40Speaker 2: a great a River Ryan and Brady Smith, two of
- 1:45Speaker 2: these guys are going to be long term rotation guys
- 1:48Speaker 2: for the Tigers. Obviously, none of them arbitration eligible, will
- 1:52Speaker 2: control them for six years. And to me, the headliner
- 1:55Speaker 2: in this deal Zayer Hope. I absolutely love Zayer Hope,
- 1:57Speaker 2: the outfielder who ironically he was the fourth best prospect
- 2:02Speaker 2: outfielder in the Dodgers organization. That's how deep they are.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But Zayer Hope is one of the best outfield prospects
- 2:07Speaker 2: in baseball. For most teams, he would be their number
- 2:10Speaker 2: one outfield prospect, and that's what he is immediately for
- 2:13Speaker 2: the Detroit Tigers. So I don't think the deal surprises us,
- 2:17Speaker 2: but obviously it makes the Dodgers that much better. And
- 2:21Speaker 2: for the Tigers, it's a really good return, an expected return.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I think we predicted something pretty close to this, So
- 2:28Speaker 2: it's an expected return, but a good deal on both sides.
- 2:31Speaker 2: What was your take on the return for the Tigers specifically?
- 2:35Speaker 1: You know, I thought the return was an a just
- 2:37Speaker 1: like you did. You know, let's start with the river
- 2:40Speaker 1: Ryan here. He's a converted infielder who really didn't start
- 2:43Speaker 1: pitching professionally until twenty twenty two. He's genuinely new to
- 2:48Speaker 1: the craft relative to his age. You know, he had
- 2:50Speaker 1: Tommy John surgery back in August twenty twenty four. It
- 2:54Speaker 1: wiped out completely his twenty twenty five season, and twenty
- 2:57Speaker 1: twenty six has been a stop art built up. But look,
- 3:01Speaker 1: he has been pitching extremely well. He has a two
- 3:05Speaker 1: seven six currently in ERA and Triple A. And look,
- 3:09Speaker 1: his whip is also one point one point eight. And
- 3:12Speaker 1: a guy like that, getting a guy like that from
- 3:15Speaker 1: the Dodgers bringing him into the organization, I think he's
- 3:19Speaker 1: going to have an impact for the Tigers in twenty
- 3:21Speaker 1: twenty seven and in twenty twenty eight.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And how about Zayer Hope? What was your take on him?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Do you like him as much as I do?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Oh? I love Zayer Hope. He has ten home runs
- 3:31Speaker 1: right now in the month of July, he's hitting three
- 3:33Speaker 1: seventy two in the month of July. He has off
- 3:36Speaker 1: the Sharks batspeed, thunderus rob power just for a five
- 3:40Speaker 1: foot ten frame. Jim, I want to ask you, how
- 3:43Speaker 1: do you think he fits into this Tiger's team.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Well, obviously if it's in great because they've got such
- 3:49Speaker 2: a young core players. And this is what I love
- 3:51Speaker 2: about the acquisition of Hope is the fact that the
- 3:54Speaker 2: Tigers young position players at the major league level and
- 3:57Speaker 2: the farm system is really strong right about this. Their
- 4:01Speaker 2: young catcher Dylan Dingler arguably is the best all around
- 4:04Speaker 2: catcher in baseball right now. Their rookie Kevin McGonagall is
- 4:08Speaker 2: a hitter that's gonna win batting titles like he's that good.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Riley Green, the left fielder, is an emerging superstar. They've
- 4:15Speaker 2: got a young first baseman in the minor leagues Josu Brisania,
- 4:19Speaker 2: who can flat out hit. He had a couple of
- 4:21Speaker 2: home runs on Saturday as well. I mean, this guy
- 4:23Speaker 2: is a stud. They've got a young first round shortstop
- 4:27Speaker 2: in the lower minor leagues. It's going to be a star.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So you add hope to this group and it just
- 4:32Speaker 2: bodes well for the future. And I didn't even mention
- 4:34Speaker 2: Max Clark, who made his major league debut on Friday.
- 4:37Speaker 2: He's off to a really good start in his career.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So think of all those really good young players the
- 4:43Speaker 2: Tigers are putting together, and then in this deal you
- 4:46Speaker 2: get two young starting pitchers. So with all these young players,
- 4:49Speaker 2: the Tigers are going to have resources going forward to
- 4:53Speaker 2: invest in other starting pitchers. So I know it's a
- 4:56Speaker 2: difficult trade for Tiger fans to deal with today, losing
- 5:00Speaker 2: the guy that won the Cy Young Award each in
- 5:02Speaker 2: the last two years. But you know, it was a
- 5:04Speaker 2: very strong, very strong return. I wanted to get your
- 5:07Speaker 2: final take on that third player in the deal. Going
- 5:10Speaker 2: back to Detroit, what was your take on Smith? Yeah?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Look, Smith had Tommy John surgery essentially that cost him
- 5:17Speaker 1: his first two pro seasons. He threw only twenty one
- 5:20Speaker 1: innings total before this year, and twenty twenty six has
- 5:23Speaker 1: been that let's let the arm finally let loose type
- 5:27Speaker 1: of season. He has been a strikeout machine and single
- 5:30Speaker 1: a you know, eighty one strikeouts and under fifteen innings.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? Look, he is a young prospect
- 5:37Speaker 1: that it's worth taking a risk on. But look, he
- 5:40Speaker 1: has dealt with injuries. However, I think this is a
- 5:44Speaker 1: great return.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I do too. So now we have to talk about
- 5:49Speaker 2: what is the impact of the Dodgers getting Schooball instead
- 5:52Speaker 2: of the Brewers or the raise the trade deadline? Right?
- 5:55Speaker 2: And I think we know the answer to that because
- 5:58Speaker 2: I think it's going to affect the collective bargaining. I
- 6:00Speaker 2: think that the Dodgers getting Schooble is one more reason
- 6:04Speaker 2: while the major league owners are going to be willing
- 6:06Speaker 2: to give up the twenty twenty seven season if that's
- 6:09Speaker 2: what it takes in order to get a salary cap.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Because in a situation like this, the Brewers and Rays
- 6:16Speaker 2: as an example, they had as much in their farm
- 6:19Speaker 2: system to trade for school as the Dodgers did, but
- 6:23Speaker 2: they were unwilling to do that because they have to
- 6:26Speaker 2: worry about putting together smaller payroll teams in the future.
- 6:30Speaker 2: As an example, the Dodgers payrolls three hundred million more
- 6:34Speaker 2: than the Brewers this year, three hundred million more. That
- 6:37Speaker 2: doesn't include Trek's Schoobl's contract. And so I think the
- 6:41Speaker 2: owners who desperately want Major League Baseball to adopt a
- 6:45Speaker 2: salary cap like the NBA, the NFL, and the NHL,
- 6:48Speaker 2: is for reasons like this. And I think that this
- 6:51Speaker 2: particular trade, if this propels the Dodgers to go win
- 6:54Speaker 2: their third World Championship, right and they end up playing
- 6:58Speaker 2: another big market team like the Yanks He's in the
- 7:00Speaker 2: World Series, I think I think we may have a
- 7:03Speaker 2: workstoppage if the players really don't want to have a
- 7:06Speaker 2: salary cap like every other league has. I think that
- 7:09Speaker 2: I think that's I think that's where I headed, and
- 7:10Speaker 2: I think that part is unfortunate. But today I think
- 7:13Speaker 2: we should be celebrating, you know, the Dodgers getting better.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Congrats to them, heavy favorites to win and for the
- 7:20Speaker 2: Tigers front office. They did a good job in their
- 7:23Speaker 2: return given the circumstances.
- 7:25Speaker 1: What's going to happen with Casey Mees, Now, it's.
- 7:28Speaker 2: A great question. What's next is always what we look at. Right,
- 7:31Speaker 2: Casey Mies is the next one to be traded, There's
- 7:33Speaker 2: no question about it. And so let's look at the Brewers,
- 7:36Speaker 2: Let's look at the Braves, look at the Rays. All
- 7:39Speaker 2: of them are going to begin the knicks for eyes.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And by the way, that's not the only player that
- 7:43Speaker 2: the Tigers are going to trade now. I expect second
- 7:45Speaker 2: basement glabor tours to be traded, and I'm expecting relievers
- 7:49Speaker 2: like Kyle Finnegan and Kenley Jansen to go as well.
- 7:52Speaker 2: You know, one of the reasons why the Dodgers decided
- 7:56Speaker 2: to deal with Schooble late Saturday night was because let's
- 8:01Speaker 2: get that off the board, so we can now work
- 8:03Speaker 2: on the next deals. Right, and so in order to
- 8:06Speaker 2: trade Myze, you had to do the Schooble deal first.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So now we'll see what kind of return they can
- 8:11Speaker 2: get for Mys. They're obviously they're not going to get
- 8:14Speaker 2: the same return they got for schoobl But I'm telling
- 8:16Speaker 2: you They're going to do extremely well, I think, because
- 8:18Speaker 2: I think Casey Mees arguably is the second best starting
- 8:21Speaker 2: pitcher that's going to be traded at this deadline. The
- 8:23Speaker 2: Tigers have both of them.
- 8:25Speaker 1: It's going to be exciting the next forty eight hours,
- 8:27Speaker 1: that's for sure. Well everyone, Hey, thanks for tuning in.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We finally have Terry Schooble off the board. That's it
- 8:35Speaker 1: for this edition at GM Territory challengelas a we're gone
