- 0:42Time for the Gill live connections podcast on YouTube
- 0:45and at the USTFCCCA convention here is bonus material can.
- 0:51I introduce yourself. Please.
- 0:52Erin Robinson. I am the Associate Director of
- 0:55Penrywise. And what does that mean?
- 0:59And what I mean by that is, you know, we've got Blake Bolden,
- 1:02the Drake Relays director. We've got Tim last year.
- 1:05I think he's going to join us again here overseeing the Kansas
- 1:08Relays. What does that mean for, I mean
- 1:10one of the iconic track pen relays?
- 1:16So Steve Dillon, who's the director of the program, is the
- 1:20director of the pen relays and my background, I come from the
- 1:25meat directing side. So.
- 1:28When we deal with the meat itself, I'm the operational
- 1:31director, I'm the one to make sure that the meat is running.
- 1:34I'm the one to make sure that all the bells and whistles are
- 1:38firing, to make sure that the Pennywise can can move forward.
- 1:41Everything from all the coordination and things.
- 1:44And, and Steve is the the in leadership in the direction of
- 1:47what this meet is going to be and what it's going to become.
- 1:50And then I get to be the boots on the ground to to implement
- 1:53those those ideas and and those things moving forward.
- 1:56So. It's it's definitely A-Team
- 1:59effort, but Steve obviously having all of his coaching
- 2:03duties. As well, right?
- 2:04There's only so many hours in the day.
- 2:06And so I try to whiten that load and and my role, which is really
- 2:11kind of fun is, is Henry always 20% 360 making sure that the
- 2:16need is, is, is going to happen and how we continue to innovate
- 2:20and how we continue to get better and and move on and move
- 2:23forward. You know, I, I, I coached for 10
- 2:26years before I came to this side.
- 2:27And I think in every place we held a home track meet.
- 2:30So I know what that entails. There's a million different
- 2:33things, everything from, as I always say, small as parking,
- 2:36but you know, outside the tracks left like sharking alumni, the
- 2:41meet schedule, last minute scratch which.
- 2:44Is logistical. Nightmare.
- 2:45Logistical nightmare, and I certainly wasn't hosting a meet
- 2:51anywhere near the sides. You know.
- 2:55How do you do? That's a good question.
- 2:58And still you're. Gonna and every May 1st I'm
- 3:00like, I don't know how we did that, but tomorrow's May 2nd and
- 3:04Santa's workshop must. Must.
- 3:06Flip over and then you just you keep.
- 3:08Moving forward, is it like that, Like as soon as Saturday's over,
- 3:11maybe you get Sunday off and then Monday year May?
- 3:14May is is wrapping everything up that happens and that's
- 3:18everything from gathering feedback and putting it all
- 3:20like, how do we make sure we continue to improve?
- 3:23So it's an event only once a year.
- 3:25There's so many things that you forget that went wrong.
- 3:28Before you've. Got to make sure you get all
- 3:30that down. It's writing the thank you
- 3:32notes, it's finishing the finances and things, And then
- 3:35June, July and August, it's kind of decompression and thinking
- 3:38about King. Where do we want to go from
- 3:40people? And within that too, there's
- 3:43always something that's in the works.
- 3:46And for this year, we're really, really excited about it.
- 3:48So we've been working with the world.
- 3:50Athletics International relays back.
- 3:54And that's not something that can happen overnight.
- 3:58Sure. So.
- 3:59Those things are a long time in in the works and those are a lot
- 4:02of times the conversations you're having in June, July and
- 4:04August and in September, it's time to actually implement those
- 4:08things. And so everything has kind of
- 4:10its, its time and season, but the Penrose is going all the
- 4:14time. And you've got to always make
- 4:17sure that you've got the pieces in place so that the the meat
- 4:21doesn't become stagnant. You want to.
- 4:23You don't want to change it because it's it is.
- 4:25What it is kind of a top board here a little bit you've.
- 4:28Got to make sure that you're constantly getting better
- 4:33because you know you're going up or you're going down like
- 4:36there's you never stand flat and it's.
- 4:40A challenge when we had you on the podcast, I think you get on
- 4:43the. Podcast.
- 4:44We had an interesting conversation.
- 4:46You kind of, I don't say blew my mind, but I like, oh, I never
- 4:49thought about this when I I came here.
- 4:51You're moving the the high school girls 3000 to the
- 4:55Saturday or the they never ran on one day.
- 4:57And and I was like, oh, but you know, just no, the average time
- 5:01of the girls. And I was like, Oh my God, I
- 5:02never thought about that. So what I'm leading to is how do
- 5:06you do that now that you have the relays that the
- 5:08international relays coming? I'm assuming that's not
- 5:11something that just slides in between two heats.
- 5:14Nothing ever slides. In necessarily so last year, the
- 5:17change that we made, the high school girls always had gone on
- 5:20Thursday and Friday and the high school boys had always gone on
- 5:23Friday. And when I say always, like, you
- 5:26know, the girls start first competing and realizing the late
- 5:2970s, obviously they make it back to the 1890s, but it was that
- 5:33way for years and years and years and years.
- 5:35And so last year we flipped it, but by flipping it to complete
- 5:39the high school girls 4x4 takes about an hour longer to complete
- 5:43the high school Boys 4. And so you've got to find that.
- 5:46Hour somewhere you've got. To reshift things.
- 5:49And so luckily this year creating the schedule, we went
- 5:53back to a lot of the things we did in 2022.
- 5:57We already kind of created that will.
- 5:59So there were things that we could quickly swap, but we
- 6:03always with Saturday, we've got the TV block.
- 6:05The TV block is always a 2 hour block.
- 6:07We don't know if it's going to be noon to two, two to four or
- 6:09whatever it's going to be. We don't know what's going to
- 6:11fall in there necessarily. But we, we.
- 6:13Allow ourselves some some leeway.
- 6:16So when the international relays come in and luckily it's a 4 by
- 6:191 and 4 by 4, something that doesn't take a terrible amount
- 6:22of schedule, we have the ability to adjust.
- 6:25And how can we promote this and how can we put this at the most
- 6:30perfect spot in the event from ATV standpoint, from the
- 6:34spectator standpoint and so forth that just allow the the
- 6:37event to to continue? Forward but.
- 6:39Every year the schedule is an incredibly complex jigsaw puzzle
- 6:44and every year you realize after, you know, like or during
- 6:48like, Oh my gosh, I needed five more minutes here and I didn't
- 6:51do it earlier on. Find out five minutes.
- 6:52Now, So yeah, well, I was amazed I hadn't been to the pen relays
- 6:56since I coached at Mississippi State so a long time ago and was
- 7:00able to go this year and, you know, really, you know, so I I
- 7:04look at it a different life than what I did when I was coaching
- 7:06and things like that. Really amazing, I mean.
- 7:09The operations it's. When when you just get the
- 7:12schedule that you see all the 4x4, it's easy to get complacent
- 7:16as as a fan watching going Oh my God, all this 4 by fours.
- 7:19The fans were in every single race.
- 7:24I mean like it's. Well, one of the things that we
- 7:27do that's kind of fun for the 4x4, every high school heat of
- 7:31the four by four, we should call it each one of the individual
- 7:34race, whoever wins that race gets a small wheel.
- 7:37So they're actually champion. So they're trying.
- 7:40And what we do when we see the event is we put everybody into
- 7:43different pools based on their their time.
- 7:47And every once in a while a coach will get away with it and
- 7:50put a time slower so they have a chance to win.
- 7:52But if they come in, we have a formula on created.
- 7:56If they come in and they run more than 20 seconds faster than
- 8:00their seat time, yeah, we ensured that they were in heat
- 8:03with the Jamaicans the next year.
- 8:04Nice. So that they don't contribute.
- 8:07To the little wrap on the hands. Oh yeah.
- 8:10And yeah. Well, tell us a little bit as we
- 8:13wrap up here a little bit, you've got this unbelievably new
- 8:16indoor facility come in at the university as well.
- 8:18What's what's the idea for this indoor facility we're going to
- 8:21host needs, I mean are we going to host an indoor pin relays
- 8:24well. The with.
- 8:27He didn't say no, by the way. With Penn being an urban campus,
- 8:31spaces is limited. So it's going to be a
- 8:33spectacular facility, but it's not going to be ocean breeze.
- 8:37It's not going to be the Armory. It's it doesn't allow for that.
- 8:40The number of spectators. It was built with hex and mark,
- 8:44right? So 8 to 10 team college meet,
- 8:47maybe 15 to 20 high schools. We'll find out right what.
- 8:51Exactly that looks like. So it doesn't have the capacity
- 8:54for a real big high school event, but we'll be creative.
- 8:57You know, we can do things in sessions, we can do some
- 8:59different things. We are going to have a Penn
- 9:02Realized High School Invitational, but it's not going
- 9:06to be sure the Penn realized like it's going to be under that
- 9:09wing. It's going to be some fun things
- 9:11like that, you know, having some indoor, you could do some fun
- 9:17and how that's going to actually come about.
- 9:22But yeah, no, it comes online next fall, yeah.
- 9:26Next fall. Yeah, it.
- 9:28Will be an incredible facility for the Penn track team, yeah.
- 9:31Yeah, there'll. Be a lot of college meets and
- 9:34it's going to be a really, really that'll.
- 9:35Be awesome. That's exciting for you guys.
- 9:37It really is healthy. Things grow.
- 9:39So I like when, you know, universities and campus are
- 9:41continuing to grow and build new facilities.
- 9:43So that's awesome. All right, Aaron, let's have a
- 9:45little fun here. I've got 100 random questions
- 9:47and trust me much, and they're pretty random.
- 9:49You get to pick the number, I get to ask the question.
- 9:51Let's go with 100. All right, we'll go with #30.
- 9:57Why #30 Because. They kind of realize it's been
- 10:01going on for 100 and. 30 years. Very good.
- 10:03All right, hoarding one O 1. What did you collect growing up
- 10:06or what do you collect now? Baseball cards, Dolls.
- 10:09I don't. Know all Growing up, it was
- 10:12basketball. I was.
- 10:14I was a big basketball fan growing up in Salt Lake.
- 10:19Well, actually Pro Bowl, but yeah.
- 10:25Do you still have them? Are they worth anything?
- 10:28Because. When I was talking baseball
- 10:30cards, they were making like a billion each one, so not much,
- 10:32but base basketball was. Yeah, but.
- 10:37They're. Just.
- 10:41Now. Yeah, that's cool, right?
- 10:44Well, because you're a Guild Podcast alum as well, you get to
- 10:47flip the script and you get to ask me one question.
- 10:51You know, I have no idea. It's I don't know why I keep
- 10:53doing this, to be honest. It's a little risky here you get
- 10:56the because I grilled you for a. Long time of a loaded question.
- 11:00What is your favorite? Track.
- 11:03Oh geez. Well, actually, and I'll make
- 11:09sure Tim can hear this. What's your favorite?
- 11:10Relay. No, you can't.
- 11:11No, you can't go down. To that, now, what is What are
- 11:14your top five favorite track events annual?
- 11:18Track events, yeah. So Olympics.
- 11:20World Championships. Yeah, yeah, good, good.
- 11:22And I and I wouldn't pick those. I've never been to those, you
- 11:25know, So I will tell you, you know, my former boss, now
- 11:29retired mentor Fred Dixon, for years kept telling me you've got
- 11:33to come to the pre class, you've got to come to the pre classic.
- 11:36And it's never worked out my schedule.
- 11:38And then one year I did and it was like, wait, this is what
- 11:40tracking me like this was. Phenomenal.
- 11:45And this year we actually partnered with the Pre Classic
- 11:48with Tract Town USA. And so I was out there again
- 11:50this year and it was it's amazing.
- 11:52I mean, again, the athletes are making this crazy, which is
- 11:55coming through the coaches, but that's amazing.
- 11:58I I do like the incidentally Division One indoor national
- 12:01championship, another meet that every year I'm like, how can it
- 12:04ever get better? An indoor the excitement.
- 12:08I mean, I'm, I love. Relays, yeah, the.
- 12:10Indoor 4 by 2 is the best. Relay.
- 12:12Yeah, it's. It's a 4 by 4 on a short track.
- 12:16It's amazing. I love the indoor meet because
- 12:19every year it's like it will never get better than this.
- 12:21And then next year it gets better and then I mean.
- 12:24You're never cold. Oh, yeah, no, I love indoor, but
- 12:27yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, no, no.
- 12:29Good point. Good point.
- 12:30And then my my third favorite me is it's indoor outdoors.
- 12:34Honestly, the junior college national, I got to coach junior
- 12:37college for a year. You know, I, I resonate a little
- 12:41bit more with junior college kids and coaches, you know, kids
- 12:44that needed second chances, kids that weren't that good out of
- 12:46high school get to go to junior college and develop and, and you
- 12:51know, junior college coaches, you know, a high school coach
- 12:54has a really hard job, right? Obviously coaching and teaching
- 12:58and going to get their kids recruited.
- 13:00A four year coach has a hard job coaching, always recruiting for
- 13:05the team. Junior coach.
- 13:06Coach has to do both. Every year they have to recruit.
- 13:08Kids in the. Team every year and then to get
- 13:10their kids recruited every year and that's and also.
- 13:13Find those kids and if you like this kid.
- 13:15Means that you're telling me I have a special place in my heart
- 13:18for for junior college, Aaron for being on the show and only
- 13:22for people who sat on the show. Get a custom holiday ornament
- 13:25with the deal connections podcast.
- 13:26Man, so grateful for you, man. Thank you so much.
- 13:29Appreciate you, man. It's really amazing.
- 13:31If you haven't, go on to University of Pennsylvania's
- 13:34website and check out the the NEWS CENTER that they're
- 13:37building there. It's really a Taj Mahal of what
- 13:40they're building. It's going to be great for the
- 13:42Ivy League and Heps. It's going to be great for that
- 13:44area for indoor track and field. We don't have enough inventory
- 13:48of indoor track and field complex.
- 13:52And so anytime we get a new indoor facility online, it's
- 13:55always beneficial for our sport, for our coach.
