- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everybody, Happy New year.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Welcome board into our first coaches show of the new year.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And it's the first to one back to back nights.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'll be with Gino tomorrow night. But we're here with
- 0:10Speaker 2: Mike Cavanaugh, Bear Smoke House, Barbecue. You got the whole
- 0:13Speaker 2: gang here, the missus, the daughter, the sun.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Yeah, girl, it's a family affair tonight.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And well I got the hockey show.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So when it's back to school tomorrow. So this is
- 0:23Speaker 3: the last supper for what it was.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Back to frigid and snowy Michigan. Good luck with that, pal, Yeah,
- 0:29Speaker 2: good luck.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Well it's not much better here.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well there's more snow there probably than there is here.
- 0:34Speaker 2: That's right, because you know they got a vicious you know,
- 0:36Speaker 2: that's that system. What is it with the weekend of
- 0:40Speaker 2: the Bowl game? We're coming back from Indy. It was
- 0:43Speaker 2: sixty degrees that day in Indy and then the front
- 0:46Speaker 2: came through with thunderstorms and the next day it was
- 0:48Speaker 2: in the teens. Wow, And I think up the Upper
- 0:51Speaker 2: Peninsula because the lake hasn't frozen yet, just got buried
- 0:54Speaker 2: like Syracuse did.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So you have.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Fun with that. You did well in school.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, okay, all right, just don't tell your parents
- 1:04Speaker 2: how it went.
- 1:05Speaker 1: He did, all right, he did, all right, good, good, good, good. Well.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Your hockey team's doing all right. Four straight wins.
- 1:11Speaker 2: When I last saw you, you were completing a sweep
- 1:13Speaker 2: of Merrimac. And I want to start there because I
- 1:15Speaker 2: really liked the discipline from the Saturday game, because it
- 1:20Speaker 2: was it was a physical, tough series. Merrimack tried to
- 1:24Speaker 2: go you guys into some penalties in that Saturday game,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and I thought, you guys, more than just you stayed
- 1:29Speaker 2: with it. You stuck to your plan and you got
- 1:32Speaker 2: the job done. You didn't let the fight, you didn't
- 1:34Speaker 2: let any cheapness getting and you know, get guys in
- 1:36Speaker 2: the penalty box.
- 1:37Speaker 1: You stuck to your guns, and you came out with
- 1:39Speaker 1: a nice wind.
- 1:39Speaker 3: We did. We stayed pretty disciplined. I thought the kids
- 1:44Speaker 3: were really focused. We had ten days off. It was
- 1:47Speaker 3: a good break after the stone Hill game for us.
- 1:50Speaker 3: We needed that weekend off to kind of recharge and
- 1:52Speaker 3: get some guys healthy. And when we got back, I thought,
- 1:56Speaker 3: probably one of our better weekends of the year. I
- 1:59Speaker 3: thought from you know, for the six periods that we
- 2:02Speaker 3: played that weekend. I thought we were really solid, stayed focused,
- 2:06Speaker 3: as you mentioned, stayed disciplined, and were able to complete
- 2:11Speaker 3: the task at hand.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you had a couple of weeks off,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and I know, it's got to feel good you play
- 2:16Speaker 2: like that in your couple of games going into a
- 2:19Speaker 2: what three week respite. You'd rather go into that like
- 2:22Speaker 2: that rather than you know, losing a game or two
- 2:23Speaker 2: and being grumpy for the next three weeks.
- 2:25Speaker 3: No question about it. Yeah, And that was a good
- 2:28Speaker 3: break for us too. You know, we got Joey was
- 2:31Speaker 3: the only one who was still playing. He played over
- 2:34Speaker 3: in the Spangler Cup and did a great job over there.
- 2:37Speaker 3: They lost in the finals of that tournament, but they
- 2:39Speaker 3: certainly represented the US college players really well. And the
- 2:46Speaker 3: guys came back recharged, and you know, I thought we
- 2:49Speaker 3: might have had our best game of the year on
- 2:51Speaker 3: New Year's Eve.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, let's let's let's go there, because the Huskies took
- 2:55Speaker 2: on l i U for two games. You played in
- 2:59Speaker 2: stores New Year's Eve, came away with an ice victory
- 3:02Speaker 2: there what three goals second period or was it?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Oh no, that was that was Saturday.
- 3:06Speaker 3: No, Yeah, we played on New Year's Eve. We played
- 3:10Speaker 3: extremely well. In the first period we were only up
- 3:12Speaker 3: one nothing, and in the second period we played well
- 3:15Speaker 3: as you know also, and still we're going into the
- 3:19Speaker 3: third period in a one nothing game and we're able
- 3:22Speaker 3: to break that game open. And unfortunately Moose couldn't get
- 3:28Speaker 3: the shutout they got. They get a late one in
- 3:30Speaker 3: both games and run the New Year's Eve game, it
- 3:34Speaker 3: was kind of an innocuous shot. It just I don't
- 3:37Speaker 3: know whether it got deflected or but it fooled them.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But we played really well, I thought on New Year's Eve.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you go down Saturday on a cold
- 3:47Speaker 2: and a cold rink and get it.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Get the job done there too. Three goal second on Saturday.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Alexandblay and Carlin de Zayne having another solid day's boy,
- 3:58Speaker 2: that line's playing awfully well. And Ayden Shahan, by the way,
- 4:01Speaker 2: you talk about a guy that's taking a nice jump
- 4:03Speaker 2: from freshman and sophomore year, that's exhibit A right there.
- 4:05Speaker 3: There's no question about it. I thought that was our
- 4:07Speaker 3: best line both games. They were really really playing with tempo,
- 4:14Speaker 3: playing with pace. They weren't giving up a lot defensively
- 4:17Speaker 3: and offensively, they were creating chances just about every shift.
- 4:22Speaker 3: And I mean Cayden had a breakaway on Saturday and
- 4:27Speaker 3: he had a point blank shot from kid made two
- 4:31Speaker 3: really high end saves on.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Him to get that win too. And you got a
- 4:36Speaker 2: shorthanded goal in the first game. Dumphy right defenseman who
- 4:41Speaker 2: Braden Dumphy who will talk to in the player segments
- 4:44Speaker 2: along with Carlon Dezay got a shorthanded goal. To walk
- 4:47Speaker 2: me through that shorthanded goal, what was it like? A
- 4:48Speaker 2: like a breakout and a rebounder get here?
- 4:52Speaker 3: No, we made a nice play on the wall and
- 4:55Speaker 3: their guy pinched and Cayden Shahan through area pass and
- 5:01Speaker 3: Dounefee beat everybody up ice and scored the goal. We
- 5:04Speaker 3: had two shorthanded breakaways on Saturday and didn't score on
- 5:07Speaker 3: either one of them. So the penalty kill I thought
- 5:10Speaker 3: was playing with a lot of aggression. I thought they
- 5:15Speaker 3: forced Long Island into some turnovers that resulted in breakaways
- 5:22Speaker 3: and odd man rushes for us.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Looking down here at the list here, you got some
- 5:27Speaker 2: hot players here outside of Kayden Shahan, Ryan tattles on
- 5:29Speaker 2: a little bit of a vender. Right now, three game
- 5:33Speaker 2: goal streak, four game points streak. Right now, you get
- 5:35Speaker 2: Joy mold Downey back from his trip to Europe where
- 5:39Speaker 2: that team had a really good run.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Here.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and the great thing here You look at some
- 5:42Speaker 2: of the numbers, all right, some of the guys numbers
- 5:44Speaker 2: are down, but when you look top the bottom, and
- 5:47Speaker 2: we've talked about this on coaches shows the consistency that
- 5:50Speaker 2: you have with each line is getting the job done.
- 5:53Speaker 1: That way, it's not one line having to rely on
- 5:55Speaker 1: one line.
- 5:56Speaker 2: To get the job done. And that's what you've talked about.
- 5:58Speaker 2: The depth where you can roll four lines, they all
- 6:00Speaker 2: could be productive.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yeah, the game New Year's Eve, I don't know the
- 6:03Speaker 3: numbers for Saturday's game. I haven't looked at those in
- 6:07Speaker 3: detail yet. But from Saturday, excuse me, New Year's Eve,
- 6:12Speaker 3: we had twelve forwards all have over double digits in
- 6:17Speaker 3: ice time. And when you can do that, everybody's getting
- 6:21Speaker 3: ten to eleven to know even strength, I'm talking about
- 6:26Speaker 3: thirteen to eleven minutes for every forward and then you
- 6:30Speaker 3: know you have some depth and you know you're getting
- 6:32Speaker 3: you just it's easy for me as a coach. I
- 6:34Speaker 3: can just roll four lines and let one go after
- 6:37Speaker 3: the other. I don't worry about matchups and the other
- 6:40Speaker 3: thing about not only are they all scoring and it's
- 6:43Speaker 3: balanced scoring, but defensively they're all pretty solid as well,
- 6:48Speaker 3: So that really helps. Especially when you're on the road
- 6:51Speaker 3: and the other team has last change, you're not worried.
- 6:53Speaker 1: About it, right right. For sure, Tyler continues to play well.
- 6:57Speaker 3: In that Yeah. Yeah, like I said, he you know,
- 7:00Speaker 3: he could have had two shutouts. He gave up that
- 7:02Speaker 3: one goal late at home, and then they got a
- 7:06Speaker 3: five on six goal with about a couple of minutes
- 7:08Speaker 3: left in the game. Whether they pulled the goal, they
- 7:11Speaker 3: pulled the goalie when they were down three nothing, they
- 7:13Speaker 3: pulled a goalie where they think three minutes to go,
- 7:16Speaker 3: and I think they got one around the two and
- 7:17Speaker 3: a half minute mark under deflection.
- 7:19Speaker 2: All Right, there's lots to get to more than just
- 7:22Speaker 2: this hockey team. We'll continue with talk a little about
- 7:24Speaker 2: this hockey team. But you've got an alum on the
- 7:26Speaker 2: Olympic team. You had a video done released by Spit
- 7:31Speaker 2: and Chicklets that is all about your program and your facility,
- 7:34Speaker 2: which is absolutely gorgeous.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I like the shooting room, by the way, I'm a
- 7:37Speaker 1: big fan of that.
- 7:38Speaker 3: The shooting room. Yes, have you been in there.
- 7:39Speaker 2: No, I've not. I have to get in there sometimes.
- 7:42Speaker 2: At one point in my life, I was a deck
- 7:44Speaker 2: hockey legend. I scored out a rebound for a championship
- 7:47Speaker 2: one time, did you Yeah. I didn't have much of
- 7:48Speaker 2: a slap shot. I was a more of a risk
- 7:50Speaker 2: shot guy. Okay, yeah, I.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Was like that.
- 7:52Speaker 2: But I was a two way. But I was a
- 7:54Speaker 2: two way. I was two hundred well not two hundred feet. Yeah,
- 7:57Speaker 2: but I played both ends. Okay, all right, it is the.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Yukon Hockey Coaches Show.
- 8:01Speaker 2: We'll take a quick break back with calv in a
- 8:03Speaker 2: minute here on Learfield, Stay with us,
