- 0:01hello and welcome back to let's talk trail running this is your
- 0:04host robert prosser
- 0:06and this is the show where we talk about fantasy free trail
- 0:08races and the trail
- 0:09running world both what happened last week in fantasy free
- 0:13trail and upcoming races
- 0:14and also help to make picks for fantasy free trail so once
- 0:18again it's about trail
- 0:19running and trail racing both sub ultra and ultra races
- 0:22whatever pops up on a
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: fantasy free trail is what we talk about
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And so for today's preview,
- 0:28we're going to talk about the two Twisted Fork races that are
- 0:31going on in Salt Lake
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: City,
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Utah this weekend,
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: put on by Singletrack's own Finn Melanson,
- 0:37one of the biggest podcast trail running media hosts in kind of
- 0:43our landscape.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: He hosts the Singletrack podcast.
- 0:45by far one of the favorites if not one of my if not my favorite
- 0:49podcast um and yeah
- 0:50just a really awesome media mind somebody who's really helped
- 0:52to grow the sport and
- 0:53has done a lot of really awesome things for it this is his
- 0:56first crack at putting
- 0:57on a race event and he's doing it in his own backyard trails in
- 1:00salt lake city so
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: he's got a 68k and a 30k so approximately 18 miles and like
- 1:0642 ish miles give or take um so that's what we're going to be
- 1:10previewing today but
- 1:11before we do that kind of looking back on last week and what
- 1:15happened last week we
- 1:16did a preview for the uh or excuse me about two weeks ago we
- 1:20did a preview for the
- 1:21selection race for the u.s up and down the u.s mountain running
- 1:25team for the up and
- 1:25down the classic classic distance that happened at the sun and
- 1:28peace scramble
- 1:29I want to take a quick second to congratulate the men and women
- 1:32trail racers who
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: made both of those U.S.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: mountaineering teams.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: On the men's side, we had four make the team.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: In the first place spot, we had David Norris.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Really, really impressive from him.
- 1:41I knew he was a really special racer from his times at Mount
- 1:43Marathon and his
- 1:44result last year in the Cirque Series race he did and finished
- 1:46between Philamont
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: and Patrick.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to lie.
- 1:49I did not know that he had the ability to win this race and
- 1:51against that deep of a field.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So kudos to David Norris.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And it was a really tight top three on the men's side.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: We had David Norris in like 109.55, I want to say.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Mason Copey, I think, was five seconds behind.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And then Taylor Stack was another three seconds behind.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So that was a really tight and really amazing finish.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Those guys were throwing down like four-minute grade,
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: like high fours,
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: mid fours,
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: grade-adjusted pace.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So that takes into account the terrain.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: But it never really knows what the terrain is like.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: It more takes into account the elevation.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So those guys were freaking flying.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And it sounds like David Norris,
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: despite losing his shoe,
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: made a really strategic move and just really timed the race right.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm really excited to see how he does.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: He's been trying to make Olympic teams for,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: cross country or Nordic skiing for a long time,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: but now he's made a US trail running team,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: so that's really cool.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Second place was Mason Copey.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: He ran a masterful race.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I'm really bummed.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: I didn't do great on the fantasy pre-trail pick.
- 2:40I pulled him out and put Christian Allen in last minute,
- 2:42and I shouldn't have done that.
- 2:43Christian Allen was coming in off an injury,
- 2:45and Mason Copey was looking really fit.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: So I'm disappointed that I doubted him,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: and I had him in my top five the whole time as high as two,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: but I kind of panicked last minute,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: and that kind of tanked my picks,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: and it dropped me down to sixth overall.
- 2:54Third place,
- 2:55we got Taylor Stack,
- 2:55Brooks trail runner,
- 2:56also ran collegiately.
- 2:58Don't quote me where,
- 2:59but I want to say maybe Colorado State or Colorado School of
- 3:01Mines.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I think he ran somewhere in Colorado.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Blazing fast time.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Like I said, just a couple seconds behind Mason.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: The finish line video is really sick.
- 3:07You can see when David Norris crosses the line,
- 3:09you can see Mason Kobe in the back.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And then when Mason Kobe crosses the line,
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: you can see Taylor Stack right behind him,
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: three seconds behind him.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Those guys were freaking flying at the end.
- 3:16And then last one to make it,
- 3:17I think within a minute back,
- 3:19was Cam Smith.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: So coming off of his schema season, still really fit, has that speed.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: We know he's one of the best climbers in the world.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And it's usually the flats and the downs, but really awesome job.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: First man out was Andy Wacker.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Bummer to see that.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And then Dan Kurtz was in sixth place.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: So not his best race.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure he's really disappointed with that as well.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: On the women's side,
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: we saw Anna Gibson,
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: also a Brooks trainer,
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: double back from Zagama a week before and just dominate.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: She won by over 30 seconds,
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: I want to say,
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: maybe almost a minute over Lauren Gregory,
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: who second place,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: made a ton of these U.S.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: teams.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And then third place, also made a ton of these U.S.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: teams, is Allie Mack.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: And then there wasn't a fourth place slot because of...
- 3:58the uh auto qualification from grayson since she was a world
- 4:02previous world
- 4:02champion on the previous worlds so anna gibson uh lauren gregor
- 4:06and ali mac i think
- 4:07both these teams are really really awesome and i think we're
- 4:09sending some really
- 4:10good representation and i think that easily we could have
- 4:12people um podium on both
- 4:14the men's and women's side in these races um yeah i think it'll
- 4:19be tough one thing
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: that i noticed though is that if there's a ton of
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Kenyans and Ugandans,
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't laugh,
- 4:24but like they can really clean up a race depending on how
- 4:26technical it is.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So that's going to be a big factor.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: It doesn't seem like Uganda always sends a team,
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: but if they do,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: they're going to be really good.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And then Kenya always has at least like
- 4:35a couple of people on the podium but with that being said i
- 4:37think the men's and
- 4:37women's teams look awesome for this year and i'm super excited
- 4:40to see them race i'm
- 4:41sure a lot of these people are going to double back uh they
- 4:43didn't quite make it
- 4:43for broken arrow so hopefully some of them that just missed out
- 4:47also get to make
- 4:48the broken arrow team for the short trail team in the 23k um or
- 4:53no is it the 46k i
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: don't remember which one i think it's the 23k so
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: So that covers last week's race for Fantasy Free Trail.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: This week we have the Twisted Fork races.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to start off with the 30K.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I think the 30K is a little bit more exciting.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: We have some really big names.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: The names have kind of changed a good bit.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: I initially had notes and was making notes.
- 5:19And then when I refreshed and finished up my notes today,
- 5:21this is Wednesday.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: It's Wednesday morning on the East Coast time.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: It's Wednesday in the afternoon for where I am.
- 5:26um when i refreshed a lot of the names changed so that's kind
- 5:29of a bummer because
- 5:30there were some really good big names that i was excited to see
- 5:32go head to head and
- 5:33then a lot of those names kind of changed up but with that
- 5:35being said i think the
- 5:3530k is a little bit deeper so i want to talk about that race
- 5:38first um and some of
- 5:39the themes that i'm noticing with the twisted fork 30k it's a
- 5:42western state taste
- 5:44uh states tune-up for at least three of these athletes on the
- 5:46men's and women's
- 5:46side uh ton of the slc crew locals are running or people that
- 5:50kind of base
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: themselves out of slc and then um
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 5:56I think that's kind of the two big things I noticed with
- 5:58regards to themes for this
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Twisted Fork 30K.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So like we said, around 18 miles, a little bit of a faster tune-up.
- 6:07Looking at the men's and women's side,
- 6:08I'm going to start off on the men's side first.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And for the men's side, for Twisted Fork 30K,
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Kind of the usual Salt Lake City suspects.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And then another thing is that we've got a coach and athlete matchup,
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: which would be really exciting.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And they could be really closely matched.
- 6:27And then some of the guys that are just really good in that
- 6:29kind of 50K to 50 mile
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: range is what I'm noticing.
- 6:33So if we're looking down the list,
- 6:35we got guys like Caleb Olson,
- 6:37Jack Kunzel.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Eric Corcoran,
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Darren Thomas,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Matt Seidel,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Gabe Klein,
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: and Jacob Grant heading out the men's side.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And that's a solid list of guys.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: With that being said, some observations.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: So Caleb Olson, he is one of those three golden ticket winners.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: he's not a golden ticket winner,
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: excuse me,
- 6:57but he's rising Western States because he finished fifth
- 7:00overall last year,
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: fastest debut time ever.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And he is really rosin-
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: So he's a Nike trail athlete based out of Salt Lake City.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And he has really,
- 7:07really probably had this one of the steepest improvement curves
- 7:11kind of in the past
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: two years in the sport,
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: especially this,
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: this,
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: this year,
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: he seems to be on kind of a whole nother level.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: So he's been announced to the world's team this year.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: He ran and set a course record at Trans Gran Canaria earlier this year,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: beat John Albin,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: who was pretty much unbeatable in a lot of ways,
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: although he did also beat him last year.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: And then other things about Caleb Olson,
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: just had a child,
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: so new dad,
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: so that might be affecting some of his training.
- 7:35He does a really good job of talking about stuff on Substack
- 7:36and how that kind of changes.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed following him on Substack,
- 7:39and I think it's a really good look into how he approaches
- 7:41things and decides how
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: to race.
- 7:43He even mentioned one of his Substack posts was kind of
- 7:45deciding how to race,
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: and he really wanted to make the Worlds team,
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: but he didn't know if he could make it from his resume.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: So he was considering racing Gorge, but it seems like he's not.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: He's going to race Western and then race Worlds down the road.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: So that's Caleb Olson.
- 7:59He also just recently came off winning a 50K in Salt Lake City
- 8:02that had some good
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: competition with Adam Loomis and Ryan Montgomery.
- 8:05Although I think Ryan Montgomery was just kind of doing his big
- 8:08training stimulus.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And I also think probably Caleb Olson is too.
- 8:11He's not always totally Strava open,
- 8:13so he doesn't share all of his training.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: So it's tough to tell exactly how much he is doing.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: for Caleb,
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: this is a little bit short and speedy,
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: compared to what type of racing he usually does.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: But I mean,
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: with that being said,
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: he is plenty fast and plenty sharp,
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: and he's only gotten sharper,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: since he has,
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: picked up a coach,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: um,
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: picked up a coach for this year.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: And we'll talk about that coach here in just a second.
- 8:34But the other thing is too,
- 8:35I don't know,
- 8:36I doubt he'll taper too much for this race.
- 8:38I don't think he's probably started tapering too much for
- 8:40Western since we're still
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: about two weeks out.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: So maybe he has just started to come down on mileage,
- 8:47but I imagine he might still have a pretty big training block
- 8:49and a big week in his
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: legs.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So it might not be the freshest coming into this.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Going back to what I was touching on earlier,
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: he is going to be racing against his coach and his coach is Jack Kunzel.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: So I think that's a pretty nice transition there.
- 9:01uh he has been coached by jack kunzel at least for the past
- 9:04four or five months i
- 9:04want to say for most of this year he decided to get a coach and
- 9:07he talked about it
- 9:08in his Substack uh and really yeah i think it was a good choice
- 9:12i think jack is a
- 9:13really fascinating individual uh jack kunzel he's mostly known
- 9:17for his fkt attempts
- 9:18he kind of blew up and came onto the scene uh the ultra scenes
- 9:22attention in 2023
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: I believe it was 2023.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Don't quote me on that, though.
- 9:29But he basically came across everyone's radar when he beat
- 9:32Killian Jornet's record
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: on the Bob Graham round.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: So for us Westerners, that's not really as well known.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: But in the UK, it's a huge deal.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: The Bob Graham round is this set of peaks.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: It's around 65, 67 miles, I want to say.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And I think it's about 26,000 feet of vert.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: And basically, it's a bunch of peaks in the Lake District that...
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Don't quote me on this,
- 9:54even though I'm just now reading a book on fell running called
- 9:57Touching the Sky.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: That's really, really good.
- 10:00But essentially,
- 10:01there used to be competition to top as many peaks as possible
- 10:05in 24 hours.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And if I'm not mistaken,
- 10:07Braum Grand Round comes from his round that he did and topping
- 10:10all these peaks.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: in that 24 hour period.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: And then since then, it's been kind of a tradition.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: And basically there was this kind of untouchable record by this guy,
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: this guy by the name of Billy Bland,
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: that I think was 13 hours and 53 minutes,
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: if I'm not mistaken,
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: that was set in like the 80s.
- 10:25And people had tried and tried and tried and no one thought it
- 10:27was really touchable.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Killian, of course, goes and breaks it.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: He breaks it by almost an hour.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: I think he goes about 1250 something.
- 10:33And then when Killian does something naturally,
- 10:35anyone's kind of hesitant to try to copy it.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: But Jack Kunzel is like an FKT savant.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: He basically goes and scouts out these FKTs.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to slow down back up.
- 10:46fkt for anyone that doesn't know it's a fastest known time it's
- 10:49essentially a speed
- 10:50record on a route um but we call it the fastest known time
- 10:53because obviously we've
- 10:54only had like recorded running data and then especially gpx
- 10:58files for actually
- 10:59proving it for so long so some of these fkt's they were just
- 11:02kind of word of mouth
- 11:02like we knew billy bland's was 1353 and people had witnessed
- 11:06him do it um but since
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: then it's been like gps files to upload the proof
- 11:10And so anyways,
- 11:11Jack Kunzel is like this FKT guy who really wasn't doing much
- 11:15organized racing.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: He kind of did some organized racing and then got out of the Navy.
- 11:17He was an officer in the Special Forces for the SEALs,
- 11:20if I'm not mistaken.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Really smart guy.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: I think he also went to Yale.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: But he's also very eccentric and very outspoken.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: He doesn't take sponsorship money, and he's very outspoken about that.
- 11:29And he's kind of like this trail running idealist in some ways
- 11:32and really a purist
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: in a lot of ways as well.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So it doesn't take sponsorships.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Did this FKT, that kind of blew him up.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: And then he's also got FKTs on like Mount Shasta and Denali.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: He'll ski up or run up, ski down.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: That type of deal kind of makes sense.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Took one on Denali.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: He went after Mont Blanc last year, but it kind of had...
- 11:48uh dog crap conditions i think he's still got the ski round
- 11:51trip but then that's
- 11:52been broken this year it seems like they had really good
- 11:53conditions this year in
- 11:54the fkt for mont blanc because it got broken uh by uh benjamin
- 12:00the dream or vidrine
- 12:01a french guy a really good north face athlete uh who does these
- 12:04crazy ascents in
- 12:05the himalayan and then and then flies off peaks and then it
- 12:08just got broken a week
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: later by william boffelli
- 12:11um a sky runner who took it down another 10 minutes so jack
- 12:14kunzel was right around
- 12:15seven hours maybe just a little bit shy of it benjamin the
- 12:18dreams took like five
- 12:18minutes off that and then and even went below killian's
- 12:22existing time for running
- 12:23and then one of them both fell like blown both out of water and
- 12:25went like 6 43.
- 12:27So anyways,
- 12:28this is a really long digression,
- 12:29but Jack Kunzel is a really interesting athlete.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: I'm really big fan of his.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And anytime he gets interviewed, I listened to it.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: He actually just released an interview and from the back country,
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: which is Will Peterson's podcast.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: He's another FGT guy and he started coaching him as well.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: So that'd be interesting to see.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So that's, uh, Jack Kunzel.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: he actually did start racing a little bit last year,
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: which was atypical for him and had a really good showing.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So he did Giro de Mont, which is a fast Italian race.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: that's around marathon distance,
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: if I'm not mistaken,
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: usually takes like three-ish hours,
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: finished fifth with some really good sky runners,
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: behind like,
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: um,
- 13:05Lorenzo,
- 13:06no,
- 13:06not Lorenzo,
- 13:07Luca D'Opero,
- 13:08and then another Kenyan guy like Michael Salelo Saoli.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: So fifth in that race.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: And then more impressively,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: he got second in Trofeo Kima last year,
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: which is a really epic mountain race.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: It only happens every two years in Italy.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: But not only did he get second,
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: he also won under Killian's course record time,
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: but he was beat by Finlay Wild,
- 13:25his buddy who he goes back and forth with on some of the FKTs
- 13:28in UK as well.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: So...
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's enough spewing for me.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: I think if you if you couldn't tell by now,
- 13:35like I'm a pretty big Jack Kunzel fan and I think he's a very
- 13:37interesting person.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: He's very interesting to listen to talk.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: He's also been on Finn's single track podcast and he is coming off.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: He hasn't raced anything this year.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: He has done a good bit of training.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: He was going after Denali FKT,
- 13:49I think just breaking his own or setting a little faster
- 13:52because it's really close
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: to Killian's round trip time or he went for it last year.
- 13:56um and he had to bail unfortunately because his partner uh i
- 14:00think tore her mcl or
- 14:01acl uh in the mountains so he just came back to salt lake so
- 14:04i'll be curious i'm
- 14:05sure he has a really big base i'm sure he's really altitude
- 14:07acclimated but i'm not
- 14:08sure how like short sharp and fast he is on this although i
- 14:11mean the dude trains
- 14:11like a beast uh he puts his public out or his training out to
- 14:15the public for free
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: or like has a file on it and he's very open and
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: He just has a very interesting training mind.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: So that's always cool to see.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: I think if you can find any podcast with him, he is a very unique lesson.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: He's eccentric.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: He's different.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: He's super outspoken.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: And I think I can rub some people the wrong way,
- 14:31but I admire just like his ability to speak his mind and be
- 14:34very opinionated in
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: some ways.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: So next one on the list anyways is Garrett Corcoran.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: He is a sub ultra guy mostly who's done, who does some ultras.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: He's racing on the golden trail circuit and had some good results.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he ever had a sponsorship.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I don't know that he has, but he ran collegiately.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: He was a fast dude.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: He, I think has a sub four minute.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: He does have a sub four minute mile.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: I think he ran at Cal Berkeley.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: he had a pretty good interview on the steep stuff podcast with,
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: James Loriello,
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: where he talked about his background,
- 15:02but a really good track and field runner kind of came over the
- 15:05trail side.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and he had some good results last year.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: He did make the U S trail short trail team in Innsbruck in 2023.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: And he was the top finisher.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I want to say it was like 14th place, uh, in that race.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: And then he, uh,
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Definitely has the speed to win this race.
- 15:20And I would consider him as one of the favorites up there with
- 15:22Jack and Caleb.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: He did just run a 2.14.44 marathon in April.
- 15:28And for those of you wondering,
- 15:29at least on my US audience,
- 15:30that's a 5.08 minute per mile pace.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: For anyone that's listening to this in Europe,
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry,
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: I don't know if that is in kilometers per hour,
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: but I think it's around like sub three,
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure,
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: minutes per kilometer.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And so he just did that at Napa this spring.
- 15:43He hasn't raced any trail races so far as I can tell since
- 15:46Golden Trail last year.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: He did the final,
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: he got 18th place,
- 15:48but he also did have a top 10 in the Golden Trail series at the
- 15:51seventh at Mammoth.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: And then I think he was just outside the top 10 at Headlands.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: So he's SLC local.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's lived there for a couple of years now.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: He's probably previewing the course.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I follow him on Strava.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: He's really funny.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I follow him on Strava.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: And I think that he is pretty much a lock for the
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: top five and has a possibility to win this race.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Next one to talk about is Darren Thomas.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: We've talked about him on this podcast, former Solomon athlete.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Um, he's been the ultra scene for a long time.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: He's coming off of, he's got all distances like long and short.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: And I liked that he races a lot and kind of just puts his nose in it.
- 16:23He just got to,
- 16:24uh,
- 16:24just finished just outside of the top 10 at black Canyon.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: I want to say like 12, 13, 14, somewhere in there.
- 16:30And then he was second at big all to 20 AK to Andy Wacker's
- 16:32ridiculously fast time.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And then he came out and raced canyons,
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: but kind of blew up and that put him outside of the top 10.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: So definitely another strong contender up there.
- 16:43Next one on the list,
- 16:43Matt Seidel,
- 16:45Norda athlete from Cali,
- 16:46I think he is.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: He runs kind of a crazy guy, runs marathons and banana costumes.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: And I think he had the world record for marathon and banana costume,
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: but I think it has since been broken.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Don't quote me on that.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: He went out for the U.S.
- 16:58long trail team in the Gorge Waterfalls 100K this year,
- 17:01and he just missed it by a couple spots.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: He got sixth place, so didn't quite make it.
- 17:04Also ran Chuckanut earlier this year in that atrocious weather
- 17:07that a lot of people
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: got hypothermia.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Chuckanut's a 50K.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And he got seventh place.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: And then last year,
- 17:12he had an epic day at JFK and finished third overall in the
- 17:15eighth fastest time on
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: the course ever.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: So definitely a speedy dude.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Definitely has some good race results.
- 17:21and then other than that i'm trying to think if he uh he didn't
- 17:26have a dean i don't
- 17:26think any dnfs this year so i said i was definitely a really
- 17:29strong contender for
- 17:30the top five as well uh next one on the list uh gabe klein um
- 17:34has had some really
- 17:35good results in the past he is coached by corinne malcolm if
- 17:38i'm not mistaken
- 17:39Hasn't done this much recently,
- 17:41but he was eighth in Black Canyon 100K last year.
- 17:44It's always one of the most competitive,
- 17:45and that's a really good finishing.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: He ran nine trails,
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: 35 miles to fifth place earlier this year,
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: and then he had DNFs at Terra Aura 100K and Canyon's 100K last year.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: This is a shorter race,
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: so I don't necessarily expect him to DNF,
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: but I could see him in the back half of the top 10.
- 18:01For the next person on the list,
- 18:06Jacob Grant,
- 18:07Salt Lake City Boy,
- 18:0719th at Broken Arrow.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: 46K last year, ninth at it in 2023.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: I came across his YouTube channel earlier this year,
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Wannabe Pro,
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: and reminds me of one of my...
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: a present,
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: like,
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: recording some of her class.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Is that okay?
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: I'll be down in, like, 20 minutes.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: So, sorry about that.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I am using a room,
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: and so rather than jets taking off,
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: there's people that are trying to use it,
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: too.
- 18:40Anyways,
- 18:40so Jacob Grant came across his YouTube page earlier this year,
- 18:44Wannabe Pro.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: And it is a really good YouTube channel.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: It reminds me a lot of one of my favorites, Mediocre Amateur.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: So Jacob Grant goes on these adventures.
- 18:56And yeah,
- 18:56basically kind of takes you with him on the adventures,
- 18:58does different link-ups.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: So he's had stuff like Gannett Peak, which is the high point in Wyoming.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Glacier Peak in Wyoming,
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: or excuse me,
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Washington,
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Ptarmigan Traverse,
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: The Whirl,
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Lost River Range in Idaho,
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Quandary Peak,
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Tijuana.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: So yeah,
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: and I mean,
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: if you look at his straw,
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: it actually says want to be pro over mediocre amateur.
- 19:15So I think he very much based the channel kind of on mediocre
- 19:18amateur and is
- 19:20probably a little bit more even more fit than those guys um so
- 19:23fan of his of his
- 19:24youtube channel i think he's putting out good stuff i think
- 19:26he's definitely going
- 19:27to be in the back half of this top 10 um somewhere in that five
- 19:30through eight range
- 19:31last person i want to mention on the men's side is aubrey my
- 19:33myger m-y-j-e-r i
- 19:35never have heard how to say his last name but he's another salt
- 19:37lake city boy that
- 19:38moved there in the past couple years he did run collegiately at
- 19:41nc state in
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: columbia
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: based off his Strava profile.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: And I looked up some of his results.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: He had an 848 personal best in the steeple, which is super duper fast.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: And his mile PB was in the low fours minutes from what I could tell.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: He did run Scout Mountain 50K and got fourth place last year.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Second at Mammoth 26K and 22.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: He hasn't raced as much recently because I think he had a kid,
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: but he's definitely somebody who will be threatening for the top.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: On the women's side, also got a pretty deep field.
- 20:09Names like Lindsay Allison,
- 20:10Jasmine Louther,
- 20:11Jane Mouse,
- 20:11Heather Jackson,
- 20:12and Emily Spahn-Avis.
- 20:15With that being said,
- 20:16we also have two more Western States runners this year.
- 20:20It's going to be Nancy Jiang and Heather Jackson are going to
- 20:23be lining up.
- 20:25On the women's side,
- 20:26it honestly feels deeper than the men's race in some ways,
- 20:30honestly.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I think it's about the same depth, if not a little bit deeper.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: So some of the favorites, Jasmine Louther is coming off a DNF.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: She did not finish Black Canyon at 100K.
- 20:40I think she just came out too hard and then ended up bailing
- 20:43when she realized it
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: wasn't her day from what I can gather from her Instagram post.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: And then she also raced Chuckana,
- 20:49but I think she had a really nasty ankle roll and had to DNF
- 20:51there because of the
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: weather.
- 20:53So she's definitely looking for a good race after two DNFs and
- 20:56has been in SLC
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: doing some running,
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: with her partner Michelino Sanceri,
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: probably outscouting the course.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Heather Jackson, on the other hand, is so she's a hooker runner.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: She's a badass four time top five world Ironman champions.
- 21:14And so she's a career triathlete came into the ultra running
- 21:17scene about three years ago.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: And
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: really comes out and races super aggressively.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: And she's really kind of embraced the trail running,
- 21:23but she's found this cool niche where she solos these ultra
- 21:27gravel events.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Like she raced in some of the Grand Prix,
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: last time Grand Prix,
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: gravel racing series last year,
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: um,
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: while also putting up some really amazing results in the ultra world.
- 21:35So it's cool how she can kind of float between ultra distance
- 21:38running and ultra
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: distance,
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: biking as well.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: She's actually coming off of, she just raced unbound, uh,
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Usually the 200 is the most competitive,
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: but she did the XL,
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: which is a 360-mile bike race,
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: and she won it in 20 hours and set the female course record.
- 21:53And she just did that like a week ago,
- 21:54so like two weeks before this race,
- 21:56if I'm not mistaken.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: So she's probably still a little bit tired from that.
- 21:59It seems like she hasn't been doing a ton of running value per
- 22:01her Strava,
- 22:02but I think she kind of took this approach last year because
- 22:05she did race unbound
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: last year.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: And then she basically has a ton of volume in her legs,
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: and she just has to get some more running-specific stuff,
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: but she doesn't always do high-miles running.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: So far this year, she has done a little bit of racing.
- 22:14She raced Kanin's 50K and got fourth behind Hannah Allgood,
- 22:18Tabor Hemming,
- 22:18and Kimmy Schreiber.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: She raced Blackhaney 100K and came out really hard and faded once again.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: It's her second or third year in a row of doing that.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: I expect to see her going out front and pushing the pace early,
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: and it's just kind of a matter of how her legs are going to hang.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: She's been picking up her running volume, like I mentioned earlier.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: I just followed her on Strava.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I'll be curious to see.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: I think she'll be ramping up her running for this week and next week.
- 22:42So I wouldn't be surprised if she just kind of puts this as a
- 22:44training stimulus and
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: what's a big week of running for her.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: And I think she's a strong pick for the top five.
- 22:49I just don't know that she'll be the freshest or if she'll just
- 22:51kind of use this as
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: a training stimulus would be my guess.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: So next on the list is Emily's Von Avis.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: She's a,
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: per her UTMB profile,
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: it says she's a mountain runner and schema athlete based in Bozeman,
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Montana.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: She's got some really good results and kind of is always kind of
- 23:06hiding behind the scenes but a really good athlete so she got
- 23:0910th at black and
- 23:10100k last year and then uh you know 10th at ccc last year and
- 23:14then won the
- 23:15laborator 80k she got 8th at ccc the year before that and she
- 23:18also has a fit that
- 23:19broken arrow 46k in 2023 um so she real good with these
- 23:23mountainous races she
- 23:24probably has aerobic endless aerobic capacity i didn't see any
- 23:27results yet this
- 23:28year so i imagine she's just finishing up her ski season
- 23:30especially coming from
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: bozeman you can ski there pretty long
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I expect to see her in the top five as well.
- 23:35I think she's kind of like a sneaky,
- 23:37really good athlete that people often forget about.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Next one on the list is Nancy Jang.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: She's a Kiwi runner for La Sportiva.
- 23:45And she will be racing Western States here in a few weeks
- 23:48because she won a golden
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: ticket at TerraWare this year,
- 23:51which she got fifth place in the ticket roll down to her since
- 23:53Ruth Cross passed on
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: it.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure about her speed over stuff to short,
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: but because she mostly races longer stuff,
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: but I think she's a lot for somewhere in the top five.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: I think she's also similar to
- 24:03to heather jackson she'll be using this as more of a tune-up um
- 24:06i don't know that
- 24:06her and heather will be the sharpest i can imagine they'll
- 24:08still be kind of peaking
- 24:09and uh just using this as a nice long run with a good stimulus
- 24:12so a couple couple
- 24:15female names left jane moss uh also a lot sportiva athlete from
- 24:18salt lake city so
- 24:19far she's had a dnf at black canyon 100k this year and then a
- 24:21second at lake sonoma
- 24:2352 tara dower i think she's a lock for the top five these are
- 24:26her home trails she's
- 24:27fast and likes to race this kind of stuff and she also yeah she
- 24:31has that kind of a
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: home field advantage
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: So she's probably already scattered all the course.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Next one on the list,
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: I think she is a strong potential for winning,
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: if not my favorite,
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: to win,
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: even though her name's a little bit further down.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: It's going to be Lindsay Allison, recent Ultra signee.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: So she signed to Ultra Shoe Company earlier this year.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: And she's really,
- 24:50really good in these events around 50k and has had a good year
- 24:52so far with a second
- 24:53at Big Alta 50k and then a win at just Tabor Hemming and then a
- 24:57win at Lake Sonoma
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Marathon.
- 24:58I expect her to be in the top three for sure and I wouldn't be
- 25:00surprised if she wins this.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Training at Elevation, I'm living in Telluride.
- 25:05So SLC is low elevation so far as she's concerned and shouldn't
- 25:08be too hard to run in.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Two more names left.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Alina Horton won the Canons 100 miler last year,
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: which is a tough race and people get lost on it in the spring.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: And then she also won the Black Canyon 60k last year,
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: which wasn't as competitive as the 50k this year.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: But still, she's obviously got some good leg speed.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Haven't seen any races more recent than that,
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: but she could be kind of a sleeper for the back half of the top five.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: And then another name worth mentioning is Andrea Stofko,
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: 10th at Desert Ruts 50K and 13th at Terrawera 50K this year.
- 25:35Third at Lake Sonoma 50 last year,
- 25:37just behind Lindsay Allison and Anna Fisher.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: So I could see her also kind of in the back half of that top five.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: With regards to picks for the top three...
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: With regards to picks for the top three,
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: excuse me,
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: for the top five on each side,
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: the men's and the women's.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: On the women's side, I'm going to go fifth through first.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go fifth place, Emily's Von Avis.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Fourth place, Heather Jackson.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Third place, Jane Moss.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Second place, Jasmine Louther.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: And first place, Lindsay Allison.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: I think Heather will take it out hot,
- 26:12but she will either fade or will back off because she'll still
- 26:15have a lot of...
- 26:17a lot of miles in her legs,
- 26:18at least for running more than she's used to.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: I think Lindsay is sharp and has a possibility to win this.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: I also think Jasmine does as well.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Jane Moss, I'm kind of picking her as a Salt Lake City favorite.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: I could see Heather finishing higher, but I'm just kind of hesitant.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: And I think she's going to use this as a training stimulus.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Emily Swan Avis, same thing.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: I could see her finishing higher as well.
- 26:35For the females that are just outside of the top five,
- 26:38I definitely think Nancy Jing's up there.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: And then Elena Horton will be some up there as well.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: On the men's side,
- 26:45I'm going to switch around my top three at least a couple times
- 26:47in the next few days.
- 26:48But I don't have anything too exciting because a lot of these
- 26:50are some of the top guys.
- 26:52It's actually almost all the top guys from the,
- 26:56with regards to their order.
- 26:58Yeah,
- 26:59it actually is pretty much the top guys with regards to the
- 27:02order of UTMB index.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: So on the men's side,
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: I got fifth place,
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Darren Thomas,
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: fourth place,
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Matt Seidel,
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: third place,
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Garrett Corcoran,
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: second place,
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: Caleb Olson,
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: and first place,
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Jack Kunzel.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: Although honestly,
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: at the top three,
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: I could swap any which way,
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: and I'm only hesitant to pick Caleb so high.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: I think it'd be pretty sweet if he beat his own coach.
- 27:22And I'm also questioning how sharp his own coach is with
- 27:25regards to short speed
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: stuff,
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: since he was kind of getting ready to go do a Denali FKT,
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: which is like a 12-hour effort.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: So I could see any of those guys mixing it up.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: I could see Garrett winning.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: He's probably the fastest and most talented of them all.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: But his Strava says he hasn't been feeling great lately.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Jack Kunzel doesn't really make his Strava public,
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: even though he releases workouts that he does.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: So I don't really know where he's at.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Caleb also is kind of the same.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: He only releases a little bit.
- 27:47And then Matt Seidel,
- 27:48I just think,
- 27:49will be in that top five inevitably somewhere.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: And same thing with Darren Thomas.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: And then I could easily see Jacob Grant or even...
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Liam Hammond's kind of up there.
- 27:56Same thing with Gabe Klein,
- 27:57but I think these guys are probably the fittest.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: The five that I picked doesn't mean they'll get top five,
- 28:01but I think they're strong picks and they will almost
- 28:03definitely get points.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: So that's the men's and women's side.
- 28:06On the 68K,
- 28:07I don't have as much to say,
- 28:08but I'm still going to preview the athletes.
- 28:10We had guys like Matt Daniels and other people,
- 28:12but they appeared to pull out.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: I'm going to start off with the men's side on the 68K.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: So 68K around 40 miles, a little bit of a longer race.
- 28:21And like I said,
- 28:22we had Matt Daniels and it had a bunch of other names in there.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Like it had like Anthony Costolas and a handful of others,
- 28:27but I don't know if they just decided not to race or if it was
- 28:30kind of putting them
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: on there a little bit too quickly.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: So Matt Daniels, unfortunately, is a scratch.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: So looking at the rest of these names on the men's side,
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: we got Gavin Pryor,
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Adam Loomis,
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Grant Barnett,
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Noah Dussault,
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Brett Horne,
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Zach Kierke.
- 28:41power jesse rich uh and alex proctor and jose cruz so on the
- 28:47men's side um gavin
- 28:48prior kind of a sleeper not a name that a lot of people know
- 28:51but he's had a really
- 28:52good year this far um he just missed a golden ticket at cannons
- 28:56by six no excuse me
- 28:57three and a half minutes behind ryan montgomery for a sixth
- 28:59place finish so
- 29:01literally just missed a golden ticket and then just before that
- 29:03he was seventh in
- 29:04black canyon 100k um so only a couple spots off there so this
- 29:08dude is definitely
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: fit he's a young gun i think he's 26 years
- 29:11old so young dude and ultra speedy probably coming off a
- 29:14college career i'm not
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: positive about that um but he's been very consistent and last year he won
- 29:20grandstone 100 miler so he's done well i mean he just mentioned
- 29:23200 k's he did
- 29:24really long um and then i think if i looked at his results to
- 29:27tunnel hill he did a
- 29:28couple really fast 50 milers so he's also got that like speed
- 29:31uh i think he's
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: probably
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: My sleeper pick for the win, if not my pick for the win.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm excited to see him race.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: And I want to learn more about him.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: So if anyone knows anything about him, please let me know.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Adam Loomis is going to be the next guy we're going to talk about.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: He's a Dina Fit athlete from SLC.
- 29:46He regularly completes in these mountainous type of races
- 29:49around SLC and elsewhere.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: I first learned about him when I raced Speedo in 2022,
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: and he finished in the top 10 in eighth place.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: He just got second at an SLC 50K to Caleb Olson.
- 29:59And then he raced Gorge 50K earlier this year and got third
- 30:02just behind Liam
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Hammonds and Josh Potvin.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: He won the Gorge 100K last year in 2024 and was second at Run Rabbit Run,
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: which is a competitive 100 miler in Steamboat Springs.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: And it has the biggest prize purse for 100 milers in the States.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: So he won, I think, 10K off that.
- 30:17Adam Loomis has no problem with altitude or lots of climbing
- 30:19because he's a schemo guy.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: But I just don't know how sharp he is at quick efforts like this.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: And especially compared to somebody like Gavin Pryor,
- 30:29who I assume is a little bit sharper and more recently out of
- 30:32running collegiately
- 30:33and has kind of a little bit of that turnover because I don't
- 30:36think it's going to
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: be a super technical race.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Next one to look out for is Grant Barnett.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: He's another SLC athlete.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: He was a former Dean of Fit athlete,
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: but now he is with Kraft and with the Kraft Trail team,
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: so he's been running with them.
- 30:47He's typically a pretty good mountainous 50K guy,
- 30:49and he's had good results at Spigo.
- 30:51Last year,
- 30:51he got fifth place,
- 30:52and Broken Arrow in 2023,
- 30:53he also got fifth place.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: But he is coming off a little bit of string of DNFs in races.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: He had a DNF at Canyons 100K earlier this year for a golden ticket.
- 31:02And then UTMB last year where he had stomach issues,
- 31:06if I'm not mistaken.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: So another guy who should be up there.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Next on the list, Noah Dusso.
- 31:12First came across everyone's radar in Black Canyon 2023 when
- 31:15everyone was like,
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: who is this dude in the cow shorts that is crushing it?
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: That's where a lot of people became aware of Cowgill,
- 31:22the running group out of Seattle that's now spread to Boise and
- 31:25other places,
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: I think Portland as well.
- 31:27um so yeah he got a top five he got fifth place and black
- 31:29cannon just missed a
- 31:30golden ticket um since then he's won right white river 50 miler
- 31:33last year and he
- 31:34also raced run rabbit run to a 12th place which i imagine was
- 31:36disappointing for him
- 31:38he has 150k this year at the high nerd 50k mpa which he won
- 31:41pretty stoutly and set
- 31:42a course record so he seems like he's pretty fit and probably
- 31:44coming into this race
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: and gonna have a good race um
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: A couple of our names on the list,
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Jesse Rich,
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: SLC guy who doesn't race a ton but has a lot of good results.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: Only one ultra last year was a win in the Salt Lake Footlakes 50K.
- 31:57At a time that was a little bit faster than the one that Caleb
- 32:00Olsen just ran earlier this year.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: And then year before that, he was third at the Bear 100.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: And in 2021, he was seventh at Run Rabbit Run.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: I could see Jesse Rich in the back half of his top 10.
- 32:09um brett hornig is also racing he is a very well-known uh media
- 32:14guy in the trail
- 32:16running world he hosts uh conversational pace which is a shoe
- 32:19review youtube and
- 32:20then he's a frequent uh co-host on finn lanson's podcast he
- 32:23does the long run
- 32:24archives um with finn and is often on the podcast um doing
- 32:28predictions as well he
- 32:29has two tenth place finishes at big also 50k and black cannon
- 32:3250k as well this year
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: so i imagine uh
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: He's looking for something a little bit better than a 10th.
- 32:38I think he'll be in the back half of those top 10,
- 32:40hopefully a little bit higher than 10.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: But I could see him in like the five through eight.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: And maybe he'll even go 10th and make it three 10s in a row.
- 32:47So another one to look out for and another guy who's kind of
- 32:51becoming more
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: prominent is Zach Power.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: He's the co-founder of Open Fuel, a Denver guy.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: And this Open Fuel company has been sponsoring some athletes recently.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: I think it just did Dan Kurtz and a handful of others.
- 33:03He got 12th at Choconut 50K this year in sloppy weather and
- 33:06then second at Desert
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Rats 100K last year,
- 33:08which is when I first came across him at the award ceremony
- 33:10because I raced Desert
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Rats last year at the 50K though.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: And he also got 12th at Big Alta 50K last year.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Two more names to go over.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: One of which I think will be in the top five.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: One of them is Alex Proctor.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: He's the SLC young gun at 24 years old.
- 33:22He just beat Fannin at the Antelope Island 50 miler and he
- 33:25broke Devo's course
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: record from like 10 years ago.
- 33:27He got 22nd at Black Andy 100k this year and third at
- 33:30Grindstone 100 miler last year.
- 33:31So I think he's somebody to look out for and I think he will be
- 33:34somewhere.
- 33:35uh i think he's gonna try to go out maybe with some of these
- 33:37big guys which might
- 33:38be a little bit bold um but i could see i see him in the top
- 33:42five and the last one
- 33:43to look out for jose cruz he's a dude from slc in his late 40s
- 33:47he's a hundred mile
- 33:48crusher who uh just is yeah really good he first came across my
- 33:52radar in 2023 at
- 33:54hard rock when he was consistently in the top 10 before
- 33:56finishing 11th ultimately
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: um
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: He's won the Bear 100 miler.
- 34:01Last year he won it and was in second in the Wasatch 100
- 34:03despite running it 20
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: minutes faster only because he lost to Jimmy Elam.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: So he's a guy that knows these Salt Lake trails really well.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: He does really good in 100 milers.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: The longer it is, the better he is.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: I think he's a lock for somewhere in the back half of that top 10.
- 34:13I just don't know if he has the speed to be up there with some
- 34:15of these guys.
- 34:18For the men's side,
- 34:19with regards to my picks,
- 34:20I would go fifth place Alex Proctor.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Fourth place, Grant Barnett.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Third place, Noah Dusseau.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: Second place, Adam Loomis.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: And first place, Gavin Pryor.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: I think those two guys will be up front.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: I could see Noah also being up there.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: I just don't know.
- 34:33His Heiner time was really good,
- 34:34but we haven't seen him in more competitive races so far.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: But I could see Noah up there potentially winning it as well.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: It's a bummer.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Matt Daniels won't be racing.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: I was hoping to see him.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: With regards to the female side, I had to research.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: I only know a handful of these names.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: But with that being said,
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: so Sarah Cummings,
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: somebody with the highest rating per,
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: what are they looking at?
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: UTMB index, I guess, right now.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: I was really surprised.
- 34:58This is somebody who I haven't seen race since I've kind of
- 34:59gotten into trail
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: running,
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: but somebody who's had really good results in the past.
- 35:03she's a trail runner for books i looked up her instagram she
- 35:06hasn't raced a lot in
- 35:06the past few years because she just recently had a child um but
- 35:09she's a trail
- 35:09runner for brooks she has quite the impressive resume and she
- 35:12won jfk in 2021 and
- 35:14then was second in the year before ran a ton of 50ks in 2021
- 35:17and won most of them
- 35:18it seems like she was a speedy road person like a otq
- 35:20marathoner who kind of
- 35:21switched over the trail side so curious to see she could be
- 35:24dark horse coming back
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: from having a kid and could out go out there and crush it and win it
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Nicole Hansen is another athlete we'll talk about.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: So Aravipa, team athlete out of Flagstaff, Arizona.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: She just won the Ram Party 50K in Colorado Springs on May 17th.
- 35:39And most of her results are from Aravipa racers,
- 35:41which are not always the most competitive.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: But she races a lot of sub-ultra and does well.
- 35:46And then her last race this long was McDowell 50 miler in 2023,
- 35:49another Aravipa.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: And she won that.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: So that's a pretty good sign.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: But she seems to mostly do like 40K and below for a lot of stuff.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: But I could see her being up there.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Next team on the list is Kareth Arnold.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: She is a runner for Ultra, the footwear company, and she's a mom of two.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: She's always racing in these golden ticket races,
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: and she's a really consistent racer who doesn't DNF and really finishes,
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: honestly,
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: really consistently.
- 36:13She never really wins the big stuff,
- 36:15but she's always up there in the mix.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: She won a golden ticket last year.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: She's a sister-in-law to Lottie Brinks,
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: and they finished Western States right next to each other.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: She's coming off a very strong fifth-place finish at Canaan's 100K,
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: where she just missed a golden ticket.
- 36:28uh by six minutes and then she won the bear 100 last year and
- 36:31broke uh the course
- 36:32record there that was held by casey like tag um by two minutes
- 36:36uh and tons of good
- 36:37females have raced that uh like anna frost and i don't know lia
- 36:40yingling and a ton
- 36:41of others um i'd say kareth is a lock to the top three and
- 36:44really consistent racer
- 36:45who doesn't miss i could even potentially see her winning this
- 36:48um right now she's
- 36:50my pick to win it but i'm uh yeah i don't know i think there's
- 36:53there's no clear
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: favorite in the women's side if i had to pick kind of one theme
- 36:57Lauren Puritz is an OBGYN doctor who races Auto Collider
- 37:01Springs and also races a
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: lot of Aravipa events.
- 37:04She got a golden ticket last year as well,
- 37:06was the third place finish at her Black Canyon 100K.
- 37:09And she raced Black Canyon this year and got eighth place even
- 37:12though she was
- 37:12within two minutes of her time for last year because the race
- 37:14just got that much
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: faster this year.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Um, she has raced a bunch of air vibe races this year.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: She won that ramp party 60 K and North for 50 miler.
- 37:23The only,
- 37:24uh,
- 37:24hesitation I have with her is that she,
- 37:27uh,
- 37:27did just race a 50 miler the May 31st.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: So only like two or three weeks before this.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: So that's a little bit close.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Um, so it might still have some fatigue in her legs.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: Tough to say.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: Other athletes to look out for are going to be Catherine Short,
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: a Canadian who hasn't really raced since 2023.
- 37:45On her Instagram,
- 37:47it showed her racing a trail marathon in British Columbia last
- 37:50year.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: But in 2023, she has some good results.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: So she got fifth at Bandera 100K and one way too cool 50K.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: A year before that, she won Cannons 50K.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: Not sure what to expect and could be a wild card.
- 38:01Don't know what kind of fitness she's coming in with,
- 38:02but she is a swap athlete.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: And presumably, if she's racing, she's healthy.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: A couple other names to look out for, Elizabeth Legoy.
- 38:10Only result I saw from her was fourth place at Desert Rats Half
- 38:13Marathon last year,
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: but she was only two minutes behind Tabor Hemming,
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: so that could be somebody to look out for.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: Amy Sturgill is another one.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: We talked about her earlier in the big Alta 28K preview.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: She ended up getting eighth place since then.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: She's had a seventh place at Gorge 50K and a win at High Sierra's 55K.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: And then in 2023, she was second at Kodiak 100K.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: I think she's really good the longer these races get,
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: and I think she's a really good pick for points.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: She'll be somewhere in the top 10.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty confident in that.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Last one to look out for,
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Selena Langner,
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: was second at Lake Sonoma Marathon behind Lindsay Allison this year,
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: 14th at Chuckanut last year,
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: third at Mammoth 50K in 2023.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: She has lots of ultra experience and lots of good results as well.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: So I'd say she's also somebody to look out for.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: With regards to my female picks, I'm going to go fifth, Amy Sturgill.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Fourth, Cat Short.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Third, Learn Puritz.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Second, Nicole Hansen.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: And first, Kareth Arnold.
- 39:05So that kind of wraps up the men's and women picks for Twisted
- 39:10Fork 68K and 30K.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: We have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming weeks.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Next week is going to be Broken Arrow.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to start working on doing research for that.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: It's going to take a lot because there's going to be a lot of really,
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: really fast runners doing it.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: So it's Broken Arrow 46K,
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: 23K,
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: and The Ascent,
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: which I should honestly start working on right now.
- 39:28And then the week after that is also going to be packed
- 39:30Marathon of Mont Blanc,
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Laborator,
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Western States.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: And Marathon to Mont Blanc, the marathon.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, it's going to be a busy time.
- 39:39It might be kind of hard for me to get a podcast on all those,
- 39:41but I will do my best.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Broken Arrow and Western States will for sure be my focuses.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: And I might put together Marathon to Mont Blanc in Labrador into one.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of what to look forward to.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: I really appreciate everyone listening.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: I think we're up to like almost 3000 listens so far.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: If you could do me a favor and if you like it,
- 40:00share it with somebody else or just give a review on whatever
- 40:02you listen to this
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: podcast on.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: I really appreciate all the support guys.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: And yeah, can't wait for the next one.
