Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Lawrence Trump's nuclear attack comments are why the 25th Amendment exists
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, you live in a country, you live in a
- 0:04Speaker 1: world tonight, where it is no longer news that the
- 0:09Speaker 1: President of the United States appears to be insane. It
- 0:13Speaker 1: remains the single most important ongoing news story of this era.
- 0:21Speaker 1: The President of the United States appears to have lost
- 0:24Speaker 1: his mind, and he repeatedly appears to have lost his mind.
- 0:30Speaker 1: As we reported on this program last night in a
- 0:32Speaker 1: campaign speech last night, Donald Trump imagined and appeared to
- 0:38Speaker 1: welcome a nuclear attack on Los Angeles and San Diego. Yes,
- 0:44Speaker 1: that's insane. He couldn't possibly have done that, right? Well,
- 0:49Speaker 1: in fact, it is the first time in history that
- 0:51Speaker 1: any president of this country or of any country in
- 0:55Speaker 1: the world suggested that possibly acceptable targets within his country
- 1:04Speaker 1: for a nuclear attack. Donald Trump said, these are his words,
- 1:09Speaker 1: let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out
- 1:13Speaker 1: San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Those are his exact words. Because this was Donald Trump speaking,
- 1:22Speaker 1: he may be sliding down a dementia curve every day.
- 1:27Speaker 1: The words don't make perfect sense when you read a
- 1:32Speaker 1: transcript of what he actually said, and they don't make
- 1:35Speaker 1: perfect sense necessarily if you hear him say it. But
- 1:41Speaker 1: the governor of California heard it and immediately called it
- 1:48Speaker 1: deranged and dangerous. Governor Gavin Newsom reposted video of Donald
- 1:51Speaker 1: Trump's comments on social media last night saying he is
- 1:54Speaker 1: deranged and dangerous. And here now is video of what
- 2:01Speaker 1: Donald Trump actually said. Let him take out Los Angeles
- 2:30Speaker 1: and he gets cheers for that in Nebraska, among Nebraska Republicans.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Let him take out San Diego and he gets cheers
- 2:40Speaker 1: for that from Nebraska Republicans. What were they cheering for?
- 2:47Speaker 1: What did he want them to cheer for when he
- 2:49Speaker 1: said that? Donald Trump was asked today to clarify what
- 2:54Speaker 1: he meant, and he refused to clarify a single word
- 2:58Speaker 1: of what he meant. And so we are left with
- 3:01Speaker 1: those words and only those words 24 hours later. Let
- 3:04Speaker 1: them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And the cheering from a Republican audience, spoken by the
- 3:14Speaker 1: President of the United States, who appeared to be willing
- 3:19Speaker 1: to accept taking out Los Angeles, taking out San Diego.
- 3:22Speaker 1: If we have to get hit by nuclear weapons, please
- 3:25Speaker 1: let it be there. That seemed to be what he
- 3:27Speaker 1: was saying. He seemed to be talking about the possibility
- 3:30Speaker 1: of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons to take out Los Angeles
- 3:34Speaker 1: and to take out San Diego. Now, there are nuclear-armed
- 3:38Speaker 1: countries in the world that could target Los Angeles or
- 3:43Speaker 1: San Diego right now. Iran is not one of them.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But Donald Trump seem to think that Iran is currently
- 3:53Speaker 1: one of those countries. And that's why he is fighting
- 3:56Speaker 1: his war in Iran. That seemed to be what he
- 3:58Speaker 1: was saying. He said they can take out a city.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Those were his exact words. They can take out a city.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Not they will be able to take out a city
- 4:09Speaker 1: if they get nuclear weapons. Donald Trump said in the
- 4:14Speaker 1: present tense, they, presumably meaning Iran, can take out a city,
- 4:19Speaker 1: which Iran cannot do. Donald Trump then said, let them
- 4:24Speaker 1: take out Los Angeles, let them take out San Diego.
- 4:26Speaker 1: This is a very small price to pay. Those were
- 4:28Speaker 1: the exact words he said. And last night on this program,
- 4:33Speaker 1: when Cory Booker heard that, Cory Booker correctly told us
- 4:39Speaker 1: what would happen next.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Watch the silence of the Republican Party. and the enablers
- 4:47Speaker 2: that allow such a callous, cruel, and just shameful man
- 4:53Speaker 2: continue in that office as he is. And the hypocrisy
- 4:56Speaker 2: of this Republican Party right now should be condemned by
- 5:00Speaker 2: us all. He needs to lose badly in exactly four weeks.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Senator Booker was right. Silence is exactly what we got
- 5:10Speaker 1: last night and today. What Donald Trump said last night
- 5:13Speaker 1: is exactly why the 25th Amendment was written. The 25th
- 5:16Speaker 1: Amendment allows the vice president and the majority of the
- 5:19Speaker 1: cabinet to remove a mentally ill president or a physically
- 5:22Speaker 1: ill president from office. If the president objects to that removal,
- 5:25Speaker 1: Congress will then vote on the removal of that president.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So the cabinet and Congress has a role here. And
- 5:32Speaker 1: after Donald Trump said, let them take out Los Angeles,
- 5:35Speaker 1: let them take out San Diego, as if he would
- 5:37Speaker 1: be totally cool with that, The governor of California said this.
- 5:44Speaker 3: So if you didn't think the November election mattered, just
- 5:47Speaker 3: considered what just happened. The president of the United States,
- 5:50Speaker 3: the same one who sent in the National Guard into
- 5:53Speaker 3: Los Angeles, sent 700 active duty Marines to the second
- 5:57Speaker 3: largest city, in the United States of America, just invited
- 6:01Speaker 3: Iran to take out Los Angeles and San Diego, where,
- 6:05Speaker 3: by the way, over 130,000 active duty personnel are stationed,
- 6:13Speaker 3: our best and the brightest. This is not only madness,
- 6:16Speaker 3: this is dangerous, and it's deranged. And the question is self-evident.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Where the hell is Congress? Where the hell are you,
- 6:24Speaker 3: Speaker Johnson? Marco Rubio, the great J.D. Vance, where is
- 6:28Speaker 3: your outrage? Find a backbone. Do your damn job. In
- 6:33Speaker 3: the absence of that, it's time for all of us
- 6:35Speaker 3: to do our job, and we'll do that. We're going
- 6:37Speaker 3: to stand up this November, and we're going to put
- 6:39Speaker 3: an end to the presidency of Donald Trump as we
- 6:43Speaker 3: know it. We will take this country back.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So with the vice president and the majority of the
- 6:50Speaker 1: cabinet not invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump
- 6:54Speaker 1: from office, the House of Representatives could simply impeach him
- 6:57Speaker 1: just for what he said last night, along with dozens
- 7:00Speaker 1: of other things he's done as president. And then the
- 7:02Speaker 1: Senate could vote to remove him from office. But that
- 7:05Speaker 1: would require Republicans to be honest for the very first
- 7:09Speaker 1: time in their lives about Donald Trump. And as Senator
- 7:13Speaker 1: Booker said last night, Republicans absolutely will not do that.
- 7:18Speaker 1: After saying that last night, Donald Trump invited co-president Natalie
- 7:24Speaker 1: Harp up on stage with him.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I'd like to ask Natalie to come out.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Natalie, come out. Bring it out right now.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Bring it out.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'll start it right here. After Natalie Harp left the stage,
- 8:01Speaker 1: the strange old man at the microphone called her a
- 8:07Speaker 1: perfect person. She reminds me like the price is right.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Thank you, Natalie. Come on. This perfect person.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Comes up, hands it, walks up.
- 8:17Speaker 1: We should go on television with this show, right? Donald Trump,
- 8:23Speaker 1: who is 45 years older than Natalie Harp, calls her
- 8:28Speaker 1: this perfect person, something he has never said about the
- 8:33Speaker 1: current Mrs. Donald Trump. Those three words have been spoken
- 8:39Speaker 1: by Donald Trump about exactly one human being, not one
- 8:43Speaker 1: of his daughters, not one of his sons, not his
- 8:44Speaker 1: vice president. Natalie Harp, this perfect person who was born
- 8:54Speaker 1: in San Diego. Donald Trump doesn't seem to know that
- 8:58Speaker 1: most of the Trump voters in California live within the
- 9:00Speaker 1: blast radius of a nuclear weapon aimed at San Diego.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Every Senate Republican stayed silent about this today. Every Republican
- 9:09Speaker 1: member of the House of Representatives stayed silent about this today,
- 9:12Speaker 1: including Congressman Darrell Issa, who currently represents the San Diego area.
- 9:18Speaker 1: One Republican, exactly one Republican in the country, issued a
- 9:22Speaker 1: written statement on social media objecting to what Donald Trump said,
- 9:27Speaker 1: and that Republican is running for the congressional seat currently
- 9:32Speaker 1: occupied by the retiring silent Republican Congressman Darrell Issa. Republican
- 9:39Speaker 1: Jim Desmond, running to represent the people who Donald Trump
- 9:42Speaker 1: would suggest as preferable targets for any nuclear weapon aimed
- 9:46Speaker 1: at the United States, came up with this statement on
- 9:50Speaker 1: social media, saying, quote, I vehemently disagree with President Trump's comments.
- 9:55Speaker 1: America must stand up to Iran and defend our interests.
- 9:58Speaker 1: But the first responsibility of our commander in chief is
- 10:00Speaker 1: to protect the American people in our homeland as a
- 10:02Speaker 1: Navy veteran. I serve to protect Americans, not write off
- 10:06Speaker 1: American cities as an acceptable price of war. Our job
- 10:09Speaker 1: is to keep Americans safe. stand up to our enemies
- 10:12Speaker 1: and make sure a threat like that never becomes reality.
- 10:15Speaker 1: No American city is expendable and no American family should
- 10:18Speaker 1: ever be treated as collateral damage. And Jim Desmond, the
- 10:24Speaker 1: Republican candidate, leaves absolutely no doubt what he thinks Donald
- 10:29Speaker 1: Trump meant last night. Republican congressional candidate Jim Desmond, endorsed
- 10:36Speaker 1: by Donald Trump, believes that Donald Trump in that statement
- 10:40Speaker 1: last night, quote, did write off American cities as an
- 10:45Speaker 1: acceptable price of war. Republican congressional candidate Jim Desmond made
- 10:50Speaker 1: it very clear that he does believe that he was
- 10:53Speaker 1: contradicting Donald Trump when he said, quote, no American city
- 10:56Speaker 1: is expendable and no American family should ever be treated
- 10:59Speaker 1: as collateral damage. That is what he is suggesting Donald
- 11:04Speaker 1: Trump was doing last night. That is a Republican interpretation
- 11:10Speaker 1: of what Donald Trump said. Before Donald Trump said that
- 11:15Speaker 1: Jim Desmond was running second in the polls to Democrat
- 11:19Speaker 1: Marnie Von Wilpert, who was running three points ahead of
- 11:23Speaker 1: the Republican candidate. The Cook Political Report shifted the race
- 11:26Speaker 1: from toss-up to lean Democratic months ago. Marnie Von Wilpert
- 11:31Speaker 1: said this last night, quote, Donald Trump says Los Angeles
- 11:35Speaker 1: and San Diego being attacked would be a small price
- 11:38Speaker 1: to pay for his reckless Iran war. That is appalling
- 11:42Speaker 1: and terrifying. Californians are already paying for this terrible war
- 11:46Speaker 1: every time we fill up the tank. Now the president
- 11:48Speaker 1: is talking about a foreign government attacking a United States
- 11:52Speaker 1: city as if it was just the cost of doing business.
- 11:55Speaker 1: This is an impeachable offense by the commander-in-chief who swore
- 12:00Speaker 1: an oath to protect our country. Our homes, our families,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and our communities cannot be treated as collateral damage or
- 12:07Speaker 1: a political punchline by this president. It's indefensible that Jim
- 12:11Speaker 1: Desmond continues to support Trump's war and continues to be
- 12:15Speaker 1: backed and funded by a president who jokes about the 1.4
- 12:20Speaker 1: million people in San Diego being taken out by a
- 12:23Speaker 1: foreign adversary. We've paid enough for this war. It's time
- 12:28Speaker 1: to end it.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Hey, it's Rachel. I am so glad to see you
