Transcript
- 0:02Happy Saturday morning, everybody.
- 0:07This is the best weather in the history of Daytona Speed weeks
- 0:14ever, ever. I'm down here at Brother Rusty's
- 0:18home and I am so thankful to him.
- 0:20And Patty, I'm, I'm spoiled rotten and, and Rusty and Patty
- 0:24and my brother Mike, they love me.
- 0:28I got it going on, man. I'll tell you, I'm I'm so
- 0:31thankful to brother Rusty and Patty for letting me stay at
- 0:34this house. Listen, I've been gone 21 days
- 0:39and I miss my wife. And this beautiful home has made
- 0:43it nice on me. Staying in those old hotels.
- 0:46Boy, they get depressing. So thank you to Rusty and Patty
- 0:52for letting me stay at this beautiful home, just not too far
- 0:55from the Volusia Speedway. But this weather, I've never
- 1:01seen any. Listen, I'm 61 years old.
- 1:04I'll be 62 August 23rd. I've been coming to Daytona
- 1:08Speed weeks since the 70s. I remember when Benny Parson and
- 1:15Richard Petty and Kale Yarborough and I have never ever
- 1:20seen weather like this. It it's, it's 8586° every day.
- 1:25This is the first time I've come to Daytona Beach, FL Volusia,
- 1:30you know the whole deal. And it's just there.
- 1:33There's no forecast of rain, and it is beautiful.
- 1:37I'm thankful. All right, let's sit down,
- 1:40everybody. Oh, man, I don't even need
- 1:45Rusty's Dixon shirt on the day. It's so hot.
- 1:47Actually, I started to come out here.
- 1:50I started to come out here with the Dixon shirt on and I took it
- 1:54off. It's so darn hot.
- 1:56All right, listen, I got up late today.
- 1:59I don't know why. I just maybe I'm tired.
- 2:02I I think, I think my sleep goes with my brain.
- 2:06It's like if my brain's working hard, I get tired, OK?
- 2:09It's all about Carl Edwards. I read something a fan said, a
- 2:17fan said. I I didn't want to pay attention
- 2:20to Carl Edwards Hall of Fame speech, but I couldn't turn
- 2:24away. Same here.
- 2:27But I did want to listen to it because Carl and myself are
- 2:30friends. But that is how good Carl
- 2:33Edwards speech was. And once again I would break my
- 2:39arm patting my back that I was right.
- 2:45OK, I'm going to tell you what this speech was about.
- 2:47I'm going to debolt a little bit.
- 2:50There's another story like this for a lot of you that pay
- 2:54attention to coffee with Kenny. I tell the story about the great
- 2:58tennis player Bjorn Borg. Now we know all the negativity
- 3:01about Bjorn Borg. That's not the story.
- 3:03OK, so we want to pay attention to the real story about Bjorn
- 3:08Borg. Bjorn Borg, he was a great what
- 3:11from Germany and he he played Jimmy Connors and you kids don't
- 3:16know about this, but what happened is he was great.
- 3:19Bjorn Borg was one of the greatest tennis players of all
- 3:21time, but his whole career he was bitter, just bitter.
- 3:27And when his career was over, he got rid of all his trophies even
- 3:30though he was the greatest. This is a strange phenomenon in
- 3:34sports compared to someone like, let's say, Jimmy Johnson.
- 3:40Jimmy Johnson, seven time champion, thankful, you know,
- 3:46but Jimmy had to go out and move to different countries and, you
- 3:51know, live in Colorado. So everybody deals with their
- 3:55demons. No matter how good you are, even
- 3:58when you're the greatest of all time, you feel like you paid
- 4:01this price and you hate it now. And then all of a sudden, after
- 4:09Bjorn Borg's career was over and time went by, he made peace with
- 4:15himself. He he forgave himself and you
- 4:19know what Bjorn Borg did? He paid millions of dollars to
- 4:23find the trophies that he gave away in haste.
- 4:27What that means is Bjorn gave all this stuff away 'cause he
- 4:30hated tennis so bad. Because to be the greatest it
- 4:35you got to be self-centered and you're the person you don't want
- 4:39to be. You are a total Dick.
- 4:43And I got to tell you, I love my brother more than anybody in the
- 4:46world. Nobody loves.
- 4:49And I love my brothers Rusty and Mike, but Rusty was not, is was
- 4:54not the easiest to get along with, but I understood it.
- 4:58I understood it. There is a sense of misery
- 5:01required to be great. That doesn't mean you got to be
- 5:05a Dick to be good because there's plenty of race car
- 5:08drivers that win everything and they're not mean.
- 5:12However, they got a toll edge to them.
- 5:18Carl Edwards speech last night was a speech of forgiveness.
- 5:24Carl Edwards was one of the greatest race car drivers of our
- 5:28time. And everything Carl Edwards
- 5:31talked about, he and he said it. This is a speech of
- 5:36gratefulness. He was grateful to everybody.
- 5:39And you know why? Because at the end of this
- 5:43speech, he says, you know, Dale Junior made it famous.
- 5:47And he said, I didn't want to hit my head one more time.
- 5:54So he left NASCAR bitter and he went and traveled the world.
- 5:59And he looked back And at the end of his speech, he said, I
- 6:02realized that this is my life and I and NASCAR is me.
- 6:12Think about that. He left NASCAR 'cause he was
- 6:15hurt mentally and physically, and he felt like if he hit his
- 6:20head one more time that he wouldn't be able to spend time
- 6:25with his wife and his kids. So finally, finally, Carl
- 6:32Edwards tells the truth why he leaves NASCAR.
- 6:38And I'd have to say that it is important for me to understand
- 6:45this because all competitors deal with this, even the local
- 6:50race car drivers out here, they're out here Volusia and
- 6:53this is their Daytona 500. It it, it defines them.
- 6:57And you know, in a lot of us go this racing don't define me.
- 7:00I'm my wife Kim and my children. And they are they're everything
- 7:04to me. So when Carl Edwards on that
- 7:08last restart and he did not win that championship for Joe Gibbs
- 7:12and he hit that wall, like I said yesterday and here today,
- 7:16I'm telling you that I was right.
- 7:19I'll be darned. You know, when I was telling you
- 7:22Carl left NASCAR with a broken heart, I thought it was 90%
- 7:27right. But here today I was 100% right.
- 7:31So he lost that championship, hit his head and his wife is a
- 7:35doctor. Carl Edwards wife is a doctor.
- 7:38She looks like she's not somebody to be screwed with.
- 7:41Have you noticed Carl Edwards wife?
- 7:43She never did that NASCAR thing. It's because she's a very strong
- 7:46lady with a career. So looks to me like Carl Edwards
- 7:51wife is a bad ass not to be screwed with.
- 7:55She's not prancing up and down pit Rd. with the diamond ring on
- 7:59and the hair did. She has her own career.
- 8:02And I think that grounded Carl. So he was very thankful to
- 8:07everybody now. And basically it was, it was an
- 8:11apology speech. He said I was the worst
- 8:14teammate. And he sent, he took this speech
- 8:18to make a wrong a right. So congratulations to Carl
- 8:24Edwards for finally finding peace in your life.
- 8:27And the camera went to my brother Rusty 2 times.
- 8:30And I've never seen Rusty. He was like this because all of
- 8:36us are complete Dicks our whole racing career 'cause it it takes
- 8:40that laser focus. You got to be self-centered.
- 8:44And it was Carl just apologizing everybody.
- 8:47He, it was an incredible speech. But in the end, Carl Edwards
- 8:52left NASCAR with a broken heart, a hurt head, and he felt like if
- 8:57he had his head one more time, he wouldn't know his children.
- 9:00And he said that he didn't say that, but watch the speech.
- 9:06All right, everybody, it's sad to say, but Father John, who
- 9:11married Kim and myself, you know, I went to pre Cana class
- 9:15and Father John said to me, what do you say?
- 9:17You all? You all know, I tell you all the
- 9:19time. Father John said to me, Kenny
- 9:21Wallace, what are you going to be?
- 9:23I said I'm going to be a race car driver and Father John
- 9:28looked at me right in the eye and he said be careful young
- 9:30man, competition will kill you. It almost tried to kill Carl
- 9:37Edwards. So his speech was incredible and
- 9:42I could totally relate to it. So congratulations, Carl
- 9:46Edwards. He gave the best speech in
- 9:49NASCAR Hall of Fame history and everybody, Etzel Ford, the most
- 9:54powerful men, Mike Hilton, Joe Gibbs, they were glued to the
- 9:59speech and Carl was matter of fact when he said it all,
- 10:03meaning he was saying it and there was no it was he didn't
- 10:08miss a verbiage. He was a matter of fact.
- 10:11Congratulations, Carl Edwards, you're at peace now.
- 10:14Time to have fun, buddy.
