• 0:48
Speaker 5: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we appreciate you listening. In
• 0:54
Speaker 5: one of the interesting things that I've seen this I
• 0:58
Speaker 5: guess this this week there's a lot of talk about
• 1:03
Speaker 5: Dion Sanders and so, and it has to do with media.
• 1:09
Speaker 5: So I have my guest today is Taylor Kennedy, sports
• 1:15
Speaker 5: writer reporter for Charleston gaz That Mail and HD Media
• 1:20
Speaker 5: properties and as a West Virginia high school sports enthusiast.
• 1:24
Speaker 5: Tell me a little bit about the enthusiast part of it,
• 1:28
Speaker 5: but also give me a little bit of background on
• 1:31
Speaker 5: the HSD media part of it.
• 1:32
  Speaker 3: Please. Yeah.
• 1:33
Speaker 6: So from the sports enthusiast side of things, I grew
• 1:36
Speaker 6: up in a basketball home. My dad my uncle both
• 1:38
Speaker 6: played basketball, and I really started getting more and more
• 1:41
Speaker 6: engaged with the game of basketball than ultimately when I
• 1:43
Speaker 6: got into the sports media realm, you could say, that's
• 1:47
Speaker 6: when it really started propelling myself into knowing more about
• 1:50
Speaker 6: high school sports, not only outside of the state, but
• 1:53
Speaker 6: more so in the state. So whether it be basketball, baseball, football,
• 1:57
Speaker 6: just about anything. And then when I got this job
• 1:58
Speaker 6: in July of last year, it was just one of
• 2:00
Speaker 6: those things where I just continue to learn and learn
• 2:02
Speaker 6: and learn, and I've just been hooked on high school
• 2:05
Speaker 6: sports ever since then. So that part of it is
• 2:07
Speaker 6: it's pretty much self explainatory in a sense, that's not
• 2:10
  Speaker 6: what I do now for a living. I get a
• 2:11
Speaker 6: paycheck that says, hey, you did sports for two weeks.
• 2:13
Speaker 6: Here you go, there's a paycheck, but no, you get that.
• 2:16
Speaker 6: But then the HD Media side of things, so what
• 2:18
Speaker 6: HD Media is is pretty much like the parent company
• 2:21
Speaker 6: of over fifteen twelve to fifteen different newspapers in this
• 2:25
Speaker 6: tri state area, so like the charlesy Caazette, Mail, Herald Dispatch.
• 2:28
Speaker 6: And then you have some properties outside of the state,
• 2:31
Speaker 6: like in Ohio and Virginia and some neighboring states like that,
• 2:33
Speaker 6: So it's just a mixture of different things. Some live
• 2:35
Speaker 6: streaming is incorporated with that, so it's a little bit
• 2:38
Speaker 6: of a mixture of everything. We like to call it
• 2:40
Speaker 6: like the buffet. So whenever you go to a buffet,
• 2:42
Speaker 6: you get a little bit of everything, everything exactly. So
• 2:44
Speaker 6: I'm a guy likes a little of the play action.
• 2:46
Speaker 6: Went a little creek today and got a lot of
• 2:48
Speaker 6: different things. So that's kind of like what I think
• 2:49
Speaker 6: about AHG media. You go to the buffet, you get
• 2:51
Speaker 6: a little bit of everything when you go up there.
• 2:52
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 2:53
Speaker 5: So one of the interesting components when it comes to
• 2:58
Speaker 5: sports and media and being had been in sports.
• 3:04
Speaker 3: My entire life and now trying and now.
• 3:07
Speaker 5: Being on the I guess I could say this is
• 3:09
Speaker 5: actually on the media side of it having an opinion
• 3:13
  Speaker 5: on different things.
• 3:16
Speaker 3: A lot of times.
• 3:19
Speaker 5: There's there's something being said that impacts how somebody feels.
• 3:27
Speaker 5: I can remember being a kid and I had made
• 3:31
Speaker 5: a comment about playing professional sports that I wanted to
• 3:34
Speaker 5: play professional sports football specifically, and a reporter had made
• 3:41
Speaker 5: a comment had actually wrote something about it and made
• 3:44
Speaker 5: the case that like I wasn't actually going to be.
• 3:47
Speaker 3: Good enough, big enough to play And that's still that
• 3:53
  Speaker 3: still sticks.
• 3:54
Speaker 5: With me, and I don't want to and and this
• 3:57
Speaker 5: is not our show is not going to be about
• 3:59
Speaker 5: the negative of the media, but the but where at
• 4:04
Speaker 5: how does it fit? And because to me some sometimes
• 4:09
Speaker 5: there's a place where I think there should be something
• 4:12
Speaker 5: positive said, and we get we get the negative sided.
• 4:18
Speaker 5: And and so tell me a little bit about is
• 4:22
Speaker 5: there is there such a thing as the big guy
• 4:24
Speaker 5: who gets up into the media and he feels like
• 4:27
Speaker 5: he can write whatever he wants and say whatever he wants.
• 4:30
Speaker 3: How do you how do you feel about that? And
• 4:33
Speaker 3: how do you see that?
• 4:34
  Speaker 6: So that's a great question, I think from a you
• 4:36
Speaker 6: take it from a lot of different angles. Me personally,
• 4:40
Speaker 6: my my main responsibility and my main goal each time
• 4:43
Speaker 6: I go and report on something is to tell a
• 4:45
Speaker 6: story right. And when I go tell a story, I
• 4:47
Speaker 6: try and get factual information from both sides of that
• 4:50
Speaker 6: story instead of just going down the middle and choosing
• 4:52
Speaker 6: one side. I've been there, I've done that, I've seen
• 4:54
Speaker 6: those consequences. It wasn't the prettiest thing in the world,
• 4:56
Speaker 6: but you live and you learn, and I think with
• 5:00
Speaker 6: the media, you've gotta be really really careful in regards
• 5:03
Speaker 6: to not really who you're talking to, but really listening
• 5:07
Speaker 6: to what they're saying, because I think when you listen
• 5:09
Speaker 6: to what somebody's saying, you're you're getting what you want,
• 5:12
Speaker 6: but then you're actually getting a little bit more. Going
• 5:14
Speaker 6: back to the buffet reference, I just made you know,
• 5:16
Speaker 6: whenever you go up there, you're anticipating that you're gonna
• 5:19
Speaker 6: get X, Y and Z, but at the same time,
• 5:20
Speaker 6: you could be getting a, B and C at the
• 5:22
Speaker 6: same time. You just don't know when you go up there.
• 5:24
Speaker 6: Whenever you get up there and you see it, hey,
• 5:26
Speaker 6: it's right there in front of you. That's why I
• 5:27
Speaker 6: and that's when whenever I do interviews with people, especially
• 5:30
Speaker 6: whenever I was really big in the podcasting, it was
• 5:34
Speaker 6: really big just to really listen to what people are
• 5:37
Speaker 6: saying and then dissect it from there, if that makes sense.
• 5:40
Speaker 6: And I think there are points where where there are
• 5:43
Speaker 6: people in this industry feel they may have the upper
• 5:47
  Speaker 6: edge on people.
• 5:48
  Speaker 3: I don't.
• 5:48
Speaker 6: I don't necessarily think it happens a whole lot in
• 5:51
Speaker 6: this area, but I think from a national perspective, there
• 5:55
Speaker 6: are there are certain people that like to turn it
• 5:57
Speaker 6: in a way that can get clicks, and I think
• 5:59
  Speaker 6: that's that's becoming a new norm for a lot of
• 6:02
Speaker 6: different people, because people the cell phone is a really
• 6:05
Speaker 6: big aspect. That's my dad actually brought up a really
• 6:07
Speaker 6: good point, and I've had bosses that have said to
• 6:09
Speaker 6: me before when people when people are out in public
• 6:12
Speaker 6: and they have their phone on them and something's happening
• 6:14
Speaker 6: near them, they the first thing that they do. It's
• 6:16
Speaker 6: like it's like a spur of the moment thing, I
• 6:19
Speaker 6: want to video this in that moment. They kind of
• 6:21
Speaker 6: feel like that they're a journalist in a way that
• 6:23
Speaker 6: they are capturing a moment, they're reporting on something, and
• 6:25
Speaker 6: then when that gets picked up, then all of a sudden,
• 6:28
Speaker 6: they're incorporated with it and that's their product. So in
• 6:31
Speaker 6: a way, things can get twisted around. There can be
• 6:34
Speaker 6: different opinions about everything. That's why you have polarizing opinions
• 6:39
Speaker 6: about a lot of different things, a lot of different
• 6:42
Speaker 6: topics as well. And I think when you get to
• 6:45
Speaker 6: that point, it's all about knowing your crowd and your audience.
• 6:48
Speaker 6: I think there's a lot of good professionals out there
• 6:50
Speaker 6: that knows their audience very very well. But I think
• 6:53
Speaker 6: there are also some people that like to turn it
• 6:55
Speaker 6: just a little bit too far, to the point where
• 6:58
Speaker 6: if there's just normal out there and they see that,
• 7:02
Speaker 6: they're gonna immediately click on it, and then all of
• 7:03
Speaker 6: a sudden it's something they may already know, or it's
• 7:07
Speaker 6: false reporting just because the person that reported it or
• 7:10
Speaker 6: posted it is just wanting to engage it and get
• 7:12
Speaker 6: a dollar amount or whatever that may be in return
• 7:15
Speaker 6: in regards to building that content and building that platform.
• 7:18
Speaker 5: More so, Dion Sanders is kind of in this kind
• 7:24
Speaker 5: of a situation. He didn't like an article that was
• 7:30
Speaker 5: written he didn't like and and and I guess now.
• 7:34
Speaker 3: You know he's either gonna ban.
• 7:39
Speaker 5: Or or not talk to this particular group of reporters
• 7:44
Speaker 5: or a reporter. It is that possible because you can't
• 7:50
Speaker 5: really keep that person out of the room. He may
• 7:54
Speaker 5: you may not answer is you may not answer a
• 7:56
Speaker 5: question that he has, but he's gonna he gonna hear
• 8:00
Speaker 5: all the other questions that are asked and his answers
• 8:03
Speaker 5: and he can still report that. Is that something that's
• 8:05
  Speaker 5: even possible today?
• 8:07
Speaker 6: Yes and no. I think on the yes side of things,
• 8:12
Speaker 6: if you're a coach, for example, and I'm talking to
• 8:14
Speaker 6: you as if we're having a normal conversation and then
• 8:16
Speaker 6: I say something accidentally, or maybe it was for the
• 8:19
Speaker 6: wrong intention, you might have taken it that way, you
• 8:22
Speaker 6: have every right to tell me no comment, don't want
• 8:24
Speaker 6: to talk about it. You have that right. But in
• 8:27
Speaker 6: regard on the those side of things, no, you you're
• 8:31
  Speaker 6: not technically I mean, I shouldn't say technically you're not
• 8:34
Speaker 6: allowed to in a sense, because then there's also an
• 8:37
Speaker 6: alternative for a reporter like me to say, hey, you know,
• 8:40
Speaker 6: I got this form. I forget the exact term that
• 8:42
  Speaker 6: it is, but there's a there's a freedom, there's a
• 8:45
Speaker 6: there's a freedom of speech lie I think in the
• 8:48
Speaker 6: media that says that if you go fill this out,
• 8:51
Speaker 6: you're like, you have to comply with what's being done.
• 8:54
Speaker 6: I don't remember exactly what that term is, but there
• 8:56
Speaker 6: have been times before where when somebody needs a piece
• 9:00
Speaker 6: of information and the person that they're trying to work
• 9:02
Speaker 6: with doesn't give it to them, some people go and
• 9:04
Speaker 6: get that to get what they need to report the
• 9:06
Speaker 6: factual information instead of telling the audience. What's what's actually
• 9:11
Speaker 6: not happening is actually happening, if that makes sense.
• 9:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, And and what's what's interesting to me about that
• 9:18
Speaker 5: piece of it is because sports in itself is you.
• 9:24
Speaker 5: Everybody has a perspective of it, what you see. You know,
• 9:28
Speaker 5: I can judge Deon and say that he's he's horrible coach.
• 9:33
Speaker 3: You know, he's he's he's not doing anything.
• 9:36
Speaker 5: They need to let him go, and then somebody else
• 9:39
Speaker 5: could come back and say, oh, he's done a great job, he's.
• 9:43
Speaker 3: Done this and that. You know, So that those particular
• 9:48
Speaker 3: sides when they hit the media, how do how do
• 9:54
Speaker 3: you how do you like I'm saying that?
• 9:59
Speaker 5: So now if I'm Dan, I'm mad when you wrote
• 10:01
Speaker 5: the other the bad side, I'm on the good side
• 10:03
Speaker 5: of it. So he's good with me, you're and terrible
• 10:06
Speaker 5: with you. How do how do you deal with that?
• 10:09
Speaker 5: Because I know I can I can remember once saying like, Okay,
• 10:13
Speaker 5: I'm not I'm not gonna do this, I'm not gonna
• 10:15
Speaker 5: talk to this guy. I'm not gonna But it never
• 10:19
Speaker 5: really lasts. I don't know, it just doesn't last. But
• 10:23
Speaker 5: tell me a little bit more about the the concept of.
• 10:29
  Speaker 3: I don't.
• 10:29
Speaker 5: I don't want to say that the media can ask
• 10:32
Speaker 5: you the questions that they think that you could be.
• 10:35
  Speaker 3: A little touchy. I don't. I don't want to say
• 10:37
Speaker 3: that that's necessarily the case.
• 10:38
Speaker 5: But when you hit that nerve, I think on my side,
• 10:44
Speaker 5: I think you got to be a little bit more cautious.
• 10:46
Speaker 3: I think Dion is wrong in this situation. But what
• 10:49
Speaker 3: do you what do you think?
• 10:50
Speaker 6: I think as a media, as a media person, you
• 10:53
Speaker 6: kind of just take the ball how it rolls. If
• 10:55
Speaker 6: that makes sense. I mean, if that if that were
• 10:57
Speaker 6: to happen, then as a member of the media, you
• 11:00
Speaker 6: just continue to do what you do. You continue to
• 11:02
Speaker 6: report on the facts, not so much the opinion in
• 11:05
Speaker 6: this kind of scenario. And I think when these different
• 11:08
Speaker 6: things arise, yes you can report on it, but you
• 11:12
Speaker 6: may get something different in a sense of you may
• 11:15
Speaker 6: be getting half of the full picture that somebody else,
• 11:19
Speaker 6: as a competitor in this scenario would get because because
• 11:21
Speaker 6: if you're Dion and you're not wanting to report to
• 11:23
Speaker 6: me the full factual information, and Dion goes and does
• 11:26
Speaker 6: that to a competitor, that person Noel has the full story.
• 11:29
Speaker 6: You just have half that story. Because of what happened
• 11:31
Speaker 6: in the past. Coaches sometimes can hold grudges. Media people
• 11:34
Speaker 6: can have grudges sometimes as well, and we've seen friction
• 11:38
Speaker 6: like that before in this industry. I think now with
• 11:42
Speaker 6: what this whole Dion thing is happening is it's kind
• 11:44
Speaker 6: of giving coaches that ability more so to be more
• 11:48
Speaker 6: able to say no, I don't want to talk about that,
• 11:50
Speaker 6: Let's talk about something else. It's more of it's more
• 11:52
Speaker 6: or less he's allowing that to happen more which I
• 11:56
Speaker 6: which I understand. There may be times where a reporter
• 11:58
Speaker 6: asks something. I mean, you see all the time in
• 12:00
Speaker 6: politics that you see it all the time in politics,
• 12:02
Speaker 6: whenever a reporter asks a very high up politician and
• 12:06
Speaker 6: asks them about some big piece of legislation, that politician
• 12:10
Speaker 6: can just very easily say no, I don't want to
• 12:12
Speaker 6: talk about it, no comment. They have that right, and
• 12:14
Speaker 6: I think as a reporter it gets really old when
• 12:18
Speaker 6: that happens, because you want to you want to provide
• 12:21
Speaker 6: your audience with as much as with as much factual
• 12:24
Speaker 6: information as possible. But whenever that just continues to happen,
• 12:27
Speaker 6: it does get so old. At that point you just
• 12:29
Speaker 6: got to just keep doing what you're doing and just
• 12:31
Speaker 6: not really get so high up in those emotions.
• 12:34
Speaker 5: Somebody had said, I was I was watching watching the
• 12:37
Speaker 5: news about this story, and somebody said that they think
• 12:41
Speaker 5: that Dion is utilizing this story or this drama for
• 12:48
Speaker 5: the benefit of not looking at his record over his
• 12:54
Speaker 5: last seasons at at Colorado. What what's your what's your
• 12:59
Speaker 5: take on that? I mean, okay, well, let me back up.
• 13:03
Speaker 5: Do you think it should be something that he could
• 13:07
Speaker 5: be that angry about to where he's you know, okay,
• 13:11
Speaker 5: I'm just done with it and all of that, because
• 13:14
Speaker 5: to me, I don't see that being that big of
• 13:16
  Speaker 5: a deal. So I kind of can just I can't
• 13:20
Speaker 5: say justify it, but I can kind of think I
• 13:23
Speaker 5: kind of give some credibility to the idea of maybe
• 13:26
Speaker 5: he doesn't want to talk too much about the upcoming
• 13:29
Speaker 5: season where he's gonna go how he thinks it's going
• 13:31
  Speaker 5: to be.
• 13:32
Speaker 3: What do you think to that?
• 13:34
  Speaker 6: I think that's a great question, because I think right
• 13:36
Speaker 6: now is a really good question to ask at this
• 13:39
Speaker 6: point in the season, because my job now is figuring
• 13:42
Speaker 6: out whenever I go cover a game, whenever I do
• 13:44
Speaker 6: a previews story, whenever I talk to coaches, Hey, what
• 13:47
Speaker 6: do you think about your team? What do you think
• 13:48
Speaker 6: about the other team? How do you think you need
• 13:51
Speaker 6: to stop X, Y and Z? How do you think
• 13:52
Speaker 6: you're going to stop to run the past everything else?
• 13:54
Speaker 6: There's so many different components and it kind of brings
• 13:57
Speaker 6: the coach more engaged because they want to talk about
• 14:00
Speaker 6: that game, they want to talk about their season. And
• 14:03
Speaker 6: I think on a national scale, whenever you are such
• 14:06
Speaker 6: a national program now, so with what Colorado is, with
• 14:10
Speaker 6: the national personalities that they have, like in Travis Hunter
• 14:14
Speaker 6: and Shader Sanders and Dion Standards, those are three really
• 14:17
Speaker 6: big sports figures that nationwide. I mean, we just saw
• 14:22
Speaker 6: Travis Hunter get none excuse me, sho shoulder or Travis
• 14:25
Speaker 6: got a Nike shoe deal. That's a really big thing.
• 14:27
  Speaker 6: That's a college athlete. That's a really big thing to
• 14:29
Speaker 6: get your own shoe deal. And so when you have
• 14:32
Speaker 6: when you when you continue to talk about the same
• 14:33
Speaker 6: thing as a coach, it doesn't really get old. But
• 14:37
Speaker 6: you're just like, Okay, can we find something else to
• 14:40
Speaker 6: talk about? If I ask you fifteen times what do
• 14:43
Speaker 6: you think about this year's team? In fifteen different U
• 14:46
Speaker 6: press conferences from the beginning of spring training, mean spring camp,
• 14:50
Speaker 6: all the way to where we are today a week
• 14:52
Speaker 6: before the season starts. Yeah, you're gonna you're gonna probably
• 14:55
Speaker 6: give me the same answer fifteen times, and you're gonna
• 14:56
Speaker 6: get really tired of it all fifteen times. It maybe
• 14:59
Speaker 6: except the first time. But I just think that whenever
• 15:02
Speaker 6: you continue to ask a question. That's why I think
• 15:04
Speaker 6: the creativity of questions are starting to fade away in
• 15:07
Speaker 6: a sense, because you're kind of just looping back around
• 15:09
Speaker 6: each and every year, if that makes sense.
• 15:11
Speaker 5: But what I mean, what are the new what could
• 15:13
Speaker 5: be the new questions? I mean because to me, if
• 15:16
Speaker 5: you go, I mean, the questions are the questions every
• 15:20
Speaker 5: year to me, and if and I think if you
• 15:22
Speaker 5: try to go somewhere else, the only place I could
• 15:26
Speaker 5: see you really trying to go is is maybe more personal. Okay,
• 15:32
Speaker 5: So now you're gonna talk specifically about one player. I
• 15:35
Speaker 5: don't know if a coach can is comfortable with that
• 15:38
Speaker 5: unless you know I'm talking about my quarterback.
• 15:41
Speaker 3: But what am I going to do?
• 15:43
Speaker 5: I'm gonna throw in, Well, my line is It's important
• 15:46
Speaker 5: that the line is can protect them. If I'm talking
• 15:48
Speaker 5: about my running back, I still got to talk about
• 15:50
Speaker 5: the line if I'm talking about.
• 15:52
Speaker 3: The receivers quarterbacks in there. So there's not a really lot.
• 15:56
  Speaker 5: I mean there's a I mean, those are all the
• 15:58
Speaker 5: questions that you really that you really had.
• 16:01
  Speaker 6: I think that if I were, if I were, I
• 16:03
Speaker 6: think I'll take it from this angle. So I think
• 16:04
Speaker 6: whenever you if I were, if I were a Colorado
• 16:07
Speaker 6: reporter talking with Dion, my first question is what are
• 16:11
Speaker 6: you going to do differently from what you did last
• 16:13
Speaker 6: season heading into this season to try and prevent what
• 16:16
Speaker 6: happened last year and having below five wins? I mean
• 16:18
Speaker 6: they what they finish four nine, four and eight last season,
• 16:21
Speaker 6: and so how do you how do you go about
• 16:22
Speaker 6: making those improvements from where you were a season ago
• 16:25
Speaker 6: to now with new guys and mixing them in with
• 16:28
Speaker 6: the returners. How do you go about doing that? And
• 16:30
Speaker 6: I think that that the creativity of that can go
• 16:32
Speaker 6: along as time goes on, because I think new things
• 16:35
Speaker 6: arise from the end of a season and heading into
• 16:38
  Speaker 6: a new season.
• 16:39
Speaker 5: But I think that's the argument is that that's what
• 16:41
Speaker 5: he doesn't want to have that conversation with the media.
• 16:44
Speaker 6: Then that that hurts, that hurts the person that's reporting
• 16:47
Speaker 6: it because you're trying to again, you're trying to give
• 16:49
Speaker 6: your audience something to chew on. Whenever you're whenever you're
• 16:52
Speaker 6: trying to make a sandwich, you're trying to give them
• 16:54
Speaker 6: a sandwich to chew on. But whenever your coach or
• 16:56
Speaker 6: whomever that is doesn't give you the meat to make
• 16:58
Speaker 6: the sandwich, you're pretty much just chewing on air at
• 17:00
Speaker 6: that point. So it's difficult whenever you're not getting what
• 17:04
Speaker 6: you're wanting. And as a media person, it gets again,
• 17:07
Speaker 6: I'll just use a term, it gets old, and you
• 17:10
Speaker 6: just gotta you just gotta figure out ways of finding
• 17:12
Speaker 6: loopholes and getting what you want instead of while making
• 17:16
Speaker 6: him still be at ease with you and not really
• 17:20
Speaker 6: ruining or creating friction with that coach.
• 17:22
Speaker 5: Do you think that there's there's there's athletes and or
• 17:27
Speaker 5: media individuals, and I'll use stephen A not saying that
• 17:31
Speaker 5: this is who he is or what he is, but
• 17:34
  Speaker 5: he's a guy that that's that's a hate hate love
• 17:37
  Speaker 5: kind of guy.
• 17:37
Speaker 3: You either hate him or your love him.
• 17:40
Speaker 5: And so there's that coach that's a big name coach
• 17:44
Speaker 5: that you either hate him or love him because he's
• 17:46
Speaker 5: on there, he's coaching the right team and the team.
• 17:49
Speaker 3: Is good or bad? Who who? Who? Who wins that battle.
• 17:57
Speaker 5: Between the the Dion and and the and the top
• 18:02
Speaker 5: and Steve Let's just say Stephen A Smith.
• 18:04
Speaker 3: You know who wins that battle at the end of
• 18:07
Speaker 3: the day. Can Beyon win that? And what I mean by.
• 18:11
Speaker 5: Like, because as the media person you have, you have
• 18:16
Speaker 5: the pen, You're gonna say everything that you can say,
• 18:20
Speaker 5: whether they will or not. I'm just curious about who
• 18:23
Speaker 5: who has the power because I think this is to me,
• 18:25
Speaker 5: this looks like a power grap I just don't think that, Like,
• 18:28
  Speaker 5: I just think Dion. I don't know if he's trying
• 18:31
Speaker 5: to mask the season, but I think it's a power
• 18:33
Speaker 5: grab for him to show because Hey, I'm Dion and
• 18:39
Speaker 5: this is my team and no one is going to
• 18:42
Speaker 5: do any of these kinds of things or talk about
• 18:44
Speaker 5: me talk about my team.
• 18:45
Speaker 3: I'm not gonna let that happen.
• 18:46
Speaker 5: Boom, so don't even come to practice, you know what
• 18:50
  Speaker 5: I'm saying?
• 18:51
Speaker 3: Does that make sense? Like?
• 18:53
Speaker 5: Who who really has this power and can can Deon
• 18:58
Speaker 5: win or is he gonna is?
• 19:00
Speaker 3: Is Ultimately he could end up.
• 19:03
Speaker 5: Be written about a thousand times for no reason because
• 19:07
Speaker 5: I can get back at you. You might even play
• 19:10
Speaker 5: a decent game, but I'm not going to give you that.
• 19:12
Speaker 5: I'm not going to give you that in my article.
• 19:15
Speaker 6: I think to answer your original question, I think it's
• 19:18
Speaker 6: a lose lose scenario because in Dion's case, you're losing
• 19:21
Speaker 6: in the standpoint of you're not getting the right publicity
• 19:25
Speaker 6: towards your team. Instead of the media talking about the team,
• 19:29
Speaker 6: what they have, returning the expectations for the team, now
• 19:32
Speaker 6: they're talking about Dion and Dion not being able to
• 19:36
Speaker 6: cooperate with whomever it may be. And I think that
• 19:40
Speaker 6: that's where that common ground needs to be created. I
• 19:44
Speaker 6: guess you can say, I don't know if the common
• 19:46
Speaker 6: ground is the right term to use, but I think
• 19:49
Speaker 6: it's a lose lose scenario of Dion's taking away the
• 19:53
Speaker 6: actual vision for what the team needs, the actual vision
• 19:56
Speaker 6: of what the story needs to be about, and that
• 19:58
Speaker 6: is it's a new season, it's year or two under Dion,
• 20:02
Speaker 6: instead of Dion's friction with the media. And then on
• 20:04
Speaker 6: the media side of things, it's still a loss on
• 20:07
Speaker 6: the media side of things because you're wanting to learn
• 20:09
Speaker 6: about the team. You're wanting to learn about how different
• 20:12
Speaker 6: Schradeur is. You're wanting to learn how different Travis Hunter is.
• 20:15
Speaker 6: You're wanting to learn about the transfers they got in,
• 20:17
Speaker 6: the freshmen that they got in, and everything else. But
• 20:19
Speaker 6: whenever you have a coach that doesn't comply with you,
• 20:22
Speaker 6: that makes your job a whole lot harder. But I
• 20:25
Speaker 6: also think in regards to the professional realm, I mean,
• 20:28
Speaker 6: look at the guys like Adrian Wojanowski, Adam Schefter, guys
• 20:31
Speaker 6: like that, they go through agents, not coaches, and that's
• 20:35
Speaker 6: where they get a lot of their scoop from. I
• 20:36
Speaker 6: think you'll see that a lot more. You'll see that
• 20:40
Speaker 6: happening a lot more in college, maybe just because with
• 20:43
Speaker 6: this whole name, image and likeness realm in athletes getting
• 20:47
Speaker 6: agents now, I think the national media will start going
• 20:50
Speaker 6: through them. And I think that could also hurt the
• 20:52
Speaker 6: sports information directors side of things as well in each university,
• 20:56
Speaker 6: because now if you are a company and you want
• 20:58
Speaker 6: to learn or you want a sponsor or advertise or
• 21:01
Speaker 6: whatever it may be with a player, you're gonna go
• 21:04
Speaker 6: through that agent. You can go through the you can
• 21:06
Speaker 6: go through the athletic department. But your job's gonna be
• 21:08
Speaker 6: a whole lot easier if you go through that agent.
• 21:11
Speaker 6: And then who knows that that business may ask Shoulder Sanders,
• 21:16
Speaker 6: for example, you know what's wrong? You good? And everything okay?
• 21:20
Speaker 6: And if he says, well, my arm, I got I
• 21:21
Speaker 6: got a bad elbow, there's scoop right there, and he
• 21:24
Speaker 6: can go sell and that, and that person that's in
• 21:26
Speaker 6: that business can go sell that and be like, hey,
• 21:28
Speaker 6: I got some scoop for you. Do you want it?
• 21:30
Speaker 6: And then now that just starts going down a rabbit
• 21:33
Speaker 6: hole that I think keeps a lot of people on
• 21:35
Speaker 6: their toes most of the time.
• 21:36
Speaker 5: Is a guy like Dion is he is he too
• 21:40
Speaker 5: big or Colorado notably just his name and all of that.
• 21:46
Speaker 5: Is he is he just too big to succeed and
• 21:52
  Speaker 5: or fail?
• 21:55
  Speaker 3: Good?
• 21:55
Speaker 6: That's a good question. I think it's still early to tell.
• 21:59
Speaker 6: I mean, well, let's flip the question. I mean, you know,
• 22:02
Speaker 6: ask a similar question whenever you came back and you
• 22:04
Speaker 6: coached at State. I mean, did it kind of feel
• 22:06
Speaker 6: that way in a sense because you were a guy
• 22:08
Speaker 6: that played at Marshall Then you put went and played
• 22:10
Speaker 6: in the NFL, where you were a pro bowler very
• 22:12
Speaker 6: similar to what Dion was. You go coach at West
• 22:15
Speaker 6: Virginia State. I mean, did you kind of do you
• 22:17
Speaker 6: kind of see yourself in that scenario?
• 22:20
Speaker 5: Well, it's and I never really looked at it as
• 22:23
Speaker 5: looking back at it myself.
• 22:25
  Speaker 3: But yeah, so I think I don't know if I
• 22:30
Speaker 3: put any pressure on.
• 22:32
Speaker 5: Myself based off of my quote success because.
• 22:38
  Speaker 3: I hadn't really coached before.
• 22:40
Speaker 5: So I looked at it as you know, who will
• 22:45
Speaker 5: I be as a coach? And I tried to be
• 22:48
Speaker 5: the coaches that I had played under, and I tried
• 22:51
Speaker 5: to take that approach and so.
• 22:54
Speaker 6: And I think right there is probably what Dion's trying
• 22:57
Speaker 6: to do. He's probably taken what he's learned from his
• 22:59
Speaker 6: pre as coaches, whether it be in college or in
• 23:02
Speaker 6: the in the professional in the professional landscape, and he's
• 23:06
Speaker 6: trying to mold himself into being a head coach. It's
• 23:10
Speaker 6: still early, right, and he's still in this new new
• 23:14
Speaker 6: profession of collegiate coaching that in head coaching I should
• 23:17
Speaker 6: say that he's never been in before. So now he's
• 23:20
Speaker 6: trying to figure out where he fits in, how he
• 23:23
Speaker 6: can kind of separate himself from other guys in the
• 23:26
Speaker 6: professional right now and even previous guys before. If that makes.
• 23:29
Speaker 5: Sense, it does, and it's and it's what's interesting to me, Like,
• 23:32
Speaker 5: I know, the coaches that I played for that I
• 23:36
Speaker 5: would emulate. With the exception of coach Bob Pruitt, who
• 23:42
Speaker 5: was a you know, a fun, kind.
• 23:45
Speaker 3: Of enjoyable kind of coach, most.
• 23:48
Speaker 5: Of the coaches that I played under as head coaches
• 23:54
Speaker 5: decordinators were demanding, to say the least, right, And so
• 24:02
Speaker 5: I didn't know. You know, I played four years for
• 24:05
Speaker 5: Sonny Randall and you know, five minutes before the meeting
• 24:10
Speaker 5: and you walk in and you're the last person walked in.
• 24:12
Speaker 5: You're late, you know, regardless of what time it is.
• 24:15
Speaker 5: So I'm I'm I was so used to that. So
• 24:19
Speaker 5: I brought that to the table, and I'm and I'm
• 24:22
Speaker 5: curious because I'm not sure that Dion when he looks
• 24:28
Speaker 5: at the coaches and how they coached him, My question
• 24:33
Speaker 5: to that is, I have to assume I don't see
• 24:38
Speaker 5: a head coach or de coordinator or dB coach yelling
• 24:42
Speaker 5: and screaming at him for getting beat for a touchdown
• 24:45
Speaker 5: or missing a tackle.
• 24:47
Speaker 3: I don't see that, So which then.
• 24:50
Speaker 5: In turn makes me think of him as you know,
• 24:53
Speaker 5: as as a coach, and I've heard some of his speeches.
• 24:56
Speaker 5: I've heard some of the things that he was he'll
• 24:58
Speaker 5: say out on the field, which are you know, hard,
• 25:00
Speaker 5: those kind of things.
• 25:02
Speaker 3: But on the other side.
• 25:03
Speaker 5: Of that, I wonder if he's still has a different,
• 25:08
Speaker 5: little different templament of of how to be Like I
• 25:14
Speaker 5: think he's a little softer potentially on players than maybe
• 25:21
Speaker 5: old school coaching would you because I think he's a
• 25:25
Speaker 5: little bit more of a newer school with some discipline,
• 25:28
Speaker 5: because I know there's you know, the things about tinner
• 25:31
Speaker 5: shoes and all that kind of stuff, wearing the proper stuff.
• 25:34
Speaker 3: All of that is kind of old school stuff.
• 25:36
  Speaker 5: But I don't know if it's completely I don't know
• 25:38
Speaker 5: if he's completely in that space.
• 25:40
Speaker 6: I've heard this multiple times from a variety of different coaches,
• 25:43
Speaker 6: whether it be older coaches or older people in general.
• 25:47
Speaker 6: I think the old, the old fashioned way of coaching
• 25:50
Speaker 6: is dying away. And I think that's I think that
• 25:52
Speaker 6: it's in regards to these older coaches are starting to
• 25:55
Speaker 6: fade away. I mean, look at the college for the
• 25:57
Speaker 6: college landscape, Nick Saban, right in a top five maybe
• 26:01
Speaker 6: top three head of head football coaching college football of
• 26:04
Speaker 6: all time retired. And then you look at college basketball.
• 26:07
Speaker 6: I mean, look in the last decade of who we've
• 26:08
Speaker 6: lost in college basketball. You know, two names immediately pop up,
• 26:11
Speaker 6: Coach k and Roy Williams. Those are two guys right
• 26:14
Speaker 6: there that have been on the record before saying that
• 26:17
Speaker 6: this new the future of college athletics was kind of
• 26:21
Speaker 6: a player and then retiring. So I think things changed.
• 26:26
Speaker 6: Things are meant to change, I believe, And I think
• 26:29
Speaker 6: the old, the old fashioned way of coaching is dying away.
• 26:32
Speaker 6: And you're even seeing that now in West Virginia. I
• 26:35
Speaker 6: mean you're starting to see guys coaching, you know, just
• 26:39
Speaker 6: a couple of years and then leaving. I did a
• 26:42
Speaker 6: story a few a few weeks ago. I remember the
• 26:44
Speaker 6: exact number, but it's like over fifty sixty percent of
• 26:46
Speaker 6: coaches that are coaching this year at that school day.
• 26:51
Speaker 6: That school had like a couple of coaches before that,
• 26:54
Speaker 6: and that lasted a year or two. So the coaching
• 26:58
Speaker 6: landscape is very, very different. Now. You're not having a
• 27:01
Speaker 6: whole lot of continuity or consistency with having a coach
• 27:06
Speaker 6: multiple years. You're having a coach in there for three,
• 27:09
Speaker 6: four or five years at most and then leaving. And
• 27:11
Speaker 6: I think that's very apparent in college football as well.
• 27:14
  Speaker 4: Well.
• 27:14
Speaker 5: And let's talk high school football and talk here. And
• 27:19
Speaker 5: you know when you start, when you start talking about
• 27:21
Speaker 5: the landscape and the short amount of time that they're there,
• 27:27
Speaker 5: I know for me, you know, at the high school,
• 27:31
Speaker 5: you know, it didn't take me long to realize that
• 27:34
Speaker 5: there was that there wasn't going to be a patient.
• 27:37
Speaker 5: The parents weren't going to be patient. And I understand,
• 27:40
Speaker 5: you know, because your kids only got two years left,
• 27:43
Speaker 5: one year left, or he's in his last year, so
• 27:46
Speaker 5: you need something instantly to turn around the program. Well
• 27:52
Speaker 5: the problem with that is that never really happens, and
• 27:55
Speaker 5: so it's gonna take some time. But it was when
• 27:58
Speaker 5: it got when when people started saying, you know, you
• 28:03
Speaker 5: know I needed to go, you know, they needed to
• 28:05
Speaker 5: do that. I was like, or they were going to
• 28:07
Speaker 5: take their kids somewhere. I was like, well, no, don't
• 28:09
Speaker 5: do that. You know, it's easier for me to leave
• 28:13
Speaker 5: than it would be to have your kids leave, you know,
• 28:15
Speaker 5: stay here at the high school. My lawalty still was
• 28:18
Speaker 5: at the high school. I didn't want them to leave
• 28:20
Speaker 5: the high school. But again I think I know, well,
• 28:23
Speaker 5: I know for a fact that my style of coaching
• 28:27
Speaker 5: is done. I mean it's not even like it's not
• 28:31
Speaker 5: even remotely close. You know, running kids to you know,
• 28:35
Speaker 5: to make sure they're in shape, you know, discipline and
• 28:39
Speaker 5: on time and all of the kind of stuff that
• 28:42
Speaker 5: the expectations in school, you know, walking down the hall
• 28:45
Speaker 5: and all of a sudden they're walking down the hall
• 28:46
Speaker 5: and they should be in class. I can't, you can't,
• 28:50
Speaker 5: you can't go that far anymore. The question then becomes
• 28:56
Speaker 5: is the new better Is it going to do better
• 29:01
Speaker 5: for the kids, because to me, dealing with youth youth
• 29:05
Speaker 5: sports and parents and then knowing who they are and
• 29:10
Speaker 5: how they act, and and they want a hand in it.
• 29:16
Speaker 5: You know, the parent wants a hand in it. They
• 29:18
Speaker 5: want to be able to talk to the coach find
• 29:20
Speaker 5: out why my kid's not playing.
• 29:22
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 29:23
Speaker 5: I was on a phone call last night with with
• 29:25
Speaker 5: with with the dad, you know, and it wasn't really
• 29:28
Speaker 5: even a big issue, but it came down to him
• 29:32
Speaker 5: being involved, him having conversation with coaches and all that
• 29:35
Speaker 5: kind of stuff, and I'm like, no, just don't, you know,
• 29:39
Speaker 5: just don't just don't do that, you know, And if
• 29:41
Speaker 5: you're going to do it, it's got to be a
• 29:43
Speaker 5: calm conversation. It's got to be just two guys talking
• 29:46
Speaker 5: about how what needs to be done and all those
• 29:49
Speaker 5: kind of things with it with that particular kid, because
• 29:52
Speaker 5: the first thing, you you know, the first thing happens
• 29:54
Speaker 5: is they you know, at that level, they take they
• 29:56
Speaker 5: take the kid somewhere else.
• 29:59
Speaker 3: But that's not that particular parent.
• 30:02
Speaker 5: But there are parents that are like that that will
• 30:04
  Speaker 5: consistently do that.
• 30:06
Speaker 3: From youth football to middle school football.
• 30:10
Speaker 5: And they will attempt to do that in high school
• 30:13
Speaker 5: and they got no chance at college. But by that time,
• 30:17
Speaker 5: that kid may not even have an opportunity to do
• 30:20
Speaker 5: to make it to college because he's kind of been
• 30:25
Speaker 5: babied the whole way through. And see it, I'm worried
• 30:28
Speaker 5: about the star athlete that is good. How does he
• 30:33
Speaker 5: respect the coach? You know, how does he How does
• 30:35
Speaker 5: he respect the coach? I think if you respect the coach,
• 30:38
Speaker 5: if you are forced to respect the coach, I think
• 30:40
Speaker 5: it forces you into respecting the media, because I think
• 30:45
Speaker 5: that becomes part of your role. I know that was
• 30:48
Speaker 5: something that Sonny Randall will talk about you know, part
• 30:52
Speaker 5: of your role is the media is talking to the
• 30:55
Speaker 5: media and how you talk to them and what you
• 30:58
Speaker 5: say to them, Bud Grant.
• 31:00
Speaker 3: It's the same way.
• 31:01
Speaker 5: You know, you could just go out and just say
• 31:03
Speaker 5: whatever you wanted to say to the media, you needed
• 31:06
Speaker 5: to be you know, smart and and and be very
• 31:09
Speaker 5: careful about what you say because it impacts everybody on
• 31:16
  Speaker 5: that team.
• 31:17
Speaker 3: Am I wrong in that?
• 31:18
Speaker 6: So you hit a lot of different areas that I
• 31:21
Speaker 6: do agree with. I think this newer way, or this
• 31:26
Speaker 6: more hip way of coaching, whether it be bitty ball,
• 31:31
Speaker 6: it be middle school, it be high school, it be college,
• 31:35
Speaker 6: is starting to attract this generation of the social media generation,
• 31:41
Speaker 6: and people are now trying to find ways of making
• 31:45
Speaker 6: their programs seem sexy enough or appealing enough to say, Hey,
• 31:50
Speaker 6: if it's not working out at the school that you're
• 31:52
Speaker 6: at right now, there's always an alternative alternative, and that
• 31:56
Speaker 6: is coming over here to our school, where you may
• 31:59
Speaker 6: have a shot, you may not have a shot, but
• 32:01
Speaker 6: your name is going to be out there. And I
• 32:03
Speaker 6: think that's kind of where it's trying to attract. But
• 32:06
Speaker 6: there's also some bad in that as well, if that
• 32:08
Speaker 6: makes sense. I think there are times where coaches are
• 32:11
Speaker 6: in it for the wrong reason, I believe. I think
• 32:14
Speaker 6: there are times where coaches think it's just an additional
• 32:18
Speaker 6: paycheck and they just move on with it. Now, granted,
• 32:20
Speaker 6: and West Virginia is a little bit different in that
• 32:22
Speaker 6: area because coaching is not a high paying profession. And
• 32:27
Speaker 6: when you look at the coaches back in the day,
• 32:31
Speaker 6: I mean, you could probably be a testament to this
• 32:33
Speaker 6: and you can probably talk about it as well. I mean,
• 32:35
Speaker 6: the coaches that were coaching back then were probably in
• 32:40
Speaker 6: the school more. Whether it be an athletic director or
• 32:44
Speaker 6: a pe teacher, history teacher, whatever it may be, they
• 32:47
Speaker 6: were in the school. But now you're starting to see
• 32:51
Speaker 6: coaches a lot more so now being out of the
• 32:54
Speaker 6: school and then coming into the school after a long
• 32:58
Speaker 6: day of work and then coaching their sport. I mean, now, granted,
• 33:02
Speaker 6: I had a coach like that my senior year of
• 33:05
Speaker 6: high school. My coach was a was in the medical industry,
• 33:09
Speaker 6: I believe, as a physical trainer, and you know, he
• 33:14
Speaker 6: was outside of the school, but where I believe we
• 33:18
Speaker 6: respected him so much already. We knew who he was.
• 33:23
Speaker 6: He just wasn't in it just to do it. He
• 33:26
Speaker 6: was in it to not only build the basketball program
• 33:29
Speaker 6: that he told the administration that he was going to
• 33:31
Speaker 6: that he was gonna put out on the court each game.
• 33:34
Speaker 6: He was also wanting to create young men that I
• 33:37
Speaker 6: believe have made us, not only just me, but my
• 33:40
Speaker 6: teammates as well, the men that we are today. And
• 33:43
Speaker 6: we had we had high school coaches like that all
• 33:46
Speaker 6: throughout our four years. And I think that even translates
• 33:48
Speaker 6: back to whenever we were in middle school as well.
• 33:49
Speaker 6: And now granted went to a different middle school, but
• 33:52
Speaker 6: you'll have you'll have those coaches that are trying to
• 33:54
Speaker 6: do it for the wrong reason, but then you also
• 33:56
Speaker 6: find those coaches that are in it for the right
• 33:57
Speaker 6: reason as well. And those coaches I think people appreciate
• 34:01
Speaker 6: more so than the publicity coaches. You could say. And
• 34:06
  Speaker 6: you know, I know, I know I've referenced it a
• 34:08
Speaker 6: second ago, but you know, here are some numbers and
• 34:10
Speaker 6: this was kind of alarming to me, at least in
• 34:12
Speaker 6: regards to the coaching landscape in West Virginia.
• 34:16
Speaker 5: So hold on, can we let's take a quick break
• 34:19
Speaker 5: and we'll come out right back to that.
• 34:20
Speaker 3: All right, yep, all right, as Den, We'll be right back.
• 34:23
Speaker 7: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously
• 34:26
Speaker 7: injured in a car accident, trucking accident, injured in a
• 34:29
Speaker 7: grocery store, or even wrongfully arrested or falsely accused of
• 34:32
Speaker 7: a crime. Life happens, and when it happens to you,
• 34:34
Speaker 7: you will need sound legal advice and aggressive representation. That's
• 34:37
Speaker 7: when you call Attorney Frank Walker at three zero four
• 34:40
Speaker 7: four one three zero one seven nine. That's three zero
• 34:43

• 35:16
Speaker 5: All Right, I'm sorry, I just wanted to make sure
• 35:18
Speaker 5: we got the commercial in so, so pick up where
• 35:20
  Speaker 5: you were.
• 35:21
Speaker 6: Yeah, So, I think the high school football coaching landscape
• 35:25
Speaker 6: has definitely changed you, and you can definitely talk about
• 35:28
Speaker 6: that if you want. But this is just over the
• 35:30
Speaker 6: last year. Okay. I'll give you four different points with
• 35:32
Speaker 6: four different facts. So of twenty one programs that got
• 35:36
Speaker 6: new coaches, so twenty one coaches have new head football
• 35:39
Speaker 6: coaches leading in the week one of the season. Fifteen
• 35:42
Speaker 6: of those programs, so seventy one percent had the previous
• 35:45
Speaker 6: coach for five or fewer years, with two teams having
• 35:48
Speaker 6: a coach for one season. Elis Madonna in Gilmour County.
• 35:51
Speaker 6: Madonna has had six coaches in the last nine years. Okay,
• 35:55
Speaker 6: that's fact number one. Fact number two three coaches that
• 35:58
Speaker 6: will replaced coach a decade or more, with one eclipsing
• 36:02
Speaker 6: three decades. That was university head coach John Kelly, who
• 36:05
Speaker 6: coached for thirty seven years. That's fact number two. Fact
• 36:08
Speaker 6: number three there were two coaches that returned to their
• 36:11
Speaker 6: previous school that they had coached at, one being here
• 36:14
Speaker 6: in the Canal Valley in John Carpenter at Capitol and
• 36:17
Speaker 6: then Brandon Atkins just a couple of counties away in Logan.
• 36:20
Speaker 6: And then finally, fact number four, there were two new
• 36:23
Speaker 6: coaches that served in an interim role during the twenty
• 36:26
Speaker 6: twenty three season one being at Mountview and Will King
• 36:29
Speaker 6: and Marcus Law Spring Mills and Mountview has had had
• 36:33
Speaker 6: three interim coaches last year, so that just tells you
• 36:37
Speaker 6: what that coaching landscape looks like heading into week one.
• 36:40
Speaker 6: And then you also look at more and more so
• 36:42
Speaker 6: with this area. I mean, there aren't that many coaches
• 36:45
Speaker 6: that have coached a decade or more. John Carpenter is
• 36:48
Speaker 6: one of them. I think he's going in the year
• 36:49
Speaker 6: twelve or thirteen. And then you have then you have
• 36:53
Speaker 6: Steve Edwards Junior who's coached twenty eight years. I mean
• 36:56
Speaker 6: he's two years away from year thirty. So there's the
• 36:59
Speaker 6: group of or the class of coaching ten ten seasons
• 37:04
Speaker 6: or more is not around as much, but there are
• 37:06
Speaker 6: some good coaches out there that could last ten or
• 37:09
Speaker 6: more years. You look at you look at the guys
• 37:11
Speaker 6: down at Winfield and Eddie Smolder and he's been around
• 37:13
Speaker 6: the game for a while playing football at Marshall Donnie Mays,
• 37:16
Speaker 6: So how Charleston guy wanta state title there. He's now
• 37:19
Speaker 6: at Hurricane. He's coached close to ten years now. So
• 37:22
Speaker 6: there's guys in this area that I've done it for
• 37:23
Speaker 6: a while. Joey Field is another great example. I think
• 37:25
Speaker 6: he's going on a year five at Herbert Hoover. He
• 37:27
Speaker 6: coached a couple of years at Migo Central. So there
• 37:29
Speaker 6: are guys in this area, but they still need They
• 37:32
Speaker 6: still have some years before they get to year ten, twenty,
• 37:35
Speaker 6: and even thirty for that matter.
• 37:37
Speaker 5: And I think the reason for me when I look
• 37:41
Speaker 5: at that and I hear those numbers, what's interesting to
• 37:47
Speaker 5: me is the change in the athlete, change in the
• 37:54
Speaker 5: parenting of that athlete.
• 37:56
Speaker 3: I think when you go into coaching.
• 38:00
Speaker 5: Usually, and I think we both have said this, you
• 38:03
Speaker 5: come in to it with the mindset of the coach
• 38:06
Speaker 5: that coached you, the coaches that you've been around, and
• 38:12
Speaker 5: if you've got any kind of age to you, that
• 38:16
Speaker 5: coach and his philosophy will will not fit today. And
• 38:24
Speaker 5: if you're not able to adjust to that, then you're
• 38:28
Speaker 5: not going to be able to You're not going to
• 38:30
Speaker 5: be able to coach, You're not going to be able
• 38:32
Speaker 5: to stay at a place. And then how do you
• 38:34
Speaker 5: go into a place that has only has come You're
• 38:39
Speaker 5: they're coming off the three seasons of losing and you
• 38:43
Speaker 5: and you walk in as a head coach, what do
• 38:46
Speaker 5: you and then what's how quick can you turn that
• 38:48
Speaker 5: program around? Because how many of your best players have
• 38:51
Speaker 5: already transferred out gone somewhere else. So now you're you're younger,
• 38:57
Speaker 5: and you're less talented and kids with very little experience.
• 39:05
Speaker 5: How do you now, how do you tolerate that for
• 39:10
Speaker 5: a decade? Will the will the will the program even
• 39:14
Speaker 5: allow you to be there five years?
• 39:19
  Speaker 6: See?
• 39:19
Speaker 5: My thing, my thing at South Charleston was I was gonna.
• 39:22
Speaker 5: I was willing to take the l's just to get
• 39:25
Speaker 5: the program turned around, because where you know, where it
• 39:28
Speaker 5: had been and where it was, And so I thought
• 39:32
Speaker 5: if I did that, I could turn it over to
• 39:34
Speaker 5: someone you know, on the on the squad, or there
• 39:37
Speaker 5: was coaching on my staff and and go. But it
• 39:43
Speaker 5: was clear to me that nobody was patient enough. Nobody
• 39:46
Speaker 5: was not the administration, but the parents themselves, some of
• 39:49
Speaker 5: the kids themselves. They weren't patient enough to to say, well.
• 39:54
Speaker 6: You know, buy into it.
• 39:56
Speaker 3: They didn't want to buy into that weight.
• 39:57
Speaker 5: And and because your your wait time may not be,
• 40:01
Speaker 5: we may not turn it in your wait time. I
• 40:04
Speaker 5: mean when I was at Marshall, I mean I went
• 40:05
Speaker 5: down there, they weren't winning, and Sonny Randall was the
• 40:09
Speaker 5: head was a new head coach when I came in,
• 40:11
Speaker 5: and like a regular coach would do, he's talking about
• 40:15
Speaker 5: getting the program turned around.
• 40:17
Speaker 3: We didn't get it turned around, you know what I'm saying.
• 40:19
Speaker 3: We were losing and losing and losing and.
• 40:22
Speaker 5: Losing all of those four years. Did we get better, yes,
• 40:26
  Speaker 5: but we didn't.
• 40:27
  Speaker 6: We didn't.
• 40:27
Speaker 5: We didn't make us win any But I was I
• 40:30
Speaker 5: was set like I was locked in to.
• 40:35
  Speaker 3: Marshall.
• 40:36
Speaker 5: I was locked into him, Coach Prewett and the coaching
• 40:40
Speaker 5: staff like it was it was. And I don't think
• 40:43
Speaker 5: my dad would have let me even I don't even
• 40:45
Speaker 5: think that could have been a possibility for my dad
• 40:48
Speaker 5: to say that I was gonna think that I could
• 40:49
Speaker 5: go somewhere else and play.
• 40:51
Speaker 6: So I think again, I'm agreeing with what you're saying.
• 40:53
Speaker 6: I think another side of it. You mentioned the parent's side.
• 40:55
Speaker 6: I mean, look at mcprice from Ravens would very successful
• 40:59
Speaker 6: boy hig school basts coach in this state. He's won
• 41:01
Speaker 6: multiple state titles, well over seven hundred career wins. He
• 41:04
Speaker 6: won seven hundred games, I believe two three years ago.
• 41:06
Speaker 6: If I'm not mistaken, and in an interview a couple
• 41:10
Speaker 6: of years ago with Metro News, he said, I think
• 41:13
Speaker 6: the players will be fine if the parents left him alone.
• 41:16
Speaker 6: I think the players would buy in if they wanted
• 41:18
Speaker 6: to play, dig in and do stuff. Some people think
• 41:20
Speaker 6: that their kid that since their kid, excuse me, is
• 41:23
Speaker 6: not starting first team All state or getting enough love,
• 41:26
Speaker 6: that they will take them someplace else. They would say
• 41:28
Speaker 6: that he is better somewhere else, or that it is
• 41:30
  Speaker 6: the coach's fault. So that's a veteran guy who's seen
• 41:34
Speaker 6: a lot of different things in a very long time
• 41:37
Speaker 6: of coaching. So I think I think when a kid leaves,
• 41:41
Speaker 6: I think we need to be more aware of who's
• 41:44
Speaker 6: making that decision, if that makes sense. Is it is
• 41:46
Speaker 6: it the player or is it the parent that's making this?
• 41:48
  Speaker 5: And I think that's a very key point, because I
• 41:52
  Speaker 5: don't know why.
• 41:55
Speaker 3: You would leave not just the football per but you.
• 42:01
Speaker 5: May play baseball, you may play basketball, you may run track,
• 42:04
Speaker 5: you may do whatever, and all of your friends in
• 42:06
Speaker 5: the community in which you live in.
• 42:10
Speaker 3: Are all going to be right there.
• 42:11
Speaker 5: So you're you're leaving and you're driving back home in
• 42:16
Speaker 5: the same community that you that all your buddies are
• 42:21
Speaker 5: everybody who used to go to school with are that's
• 42:23
Speaker 5: where they're at, and you're like, you're that loan person
• 42:27
  Speaker 5: that's out there.
• 42:28
Speaker 6: I just for me, it's a testament of loyalty.
• 42:31
  Speaker 3: I no, No.
• 42:34
  Speaker 6: I mean, I think, I think, I mean, I believe me.
• 42:37
Speaker 6: I am. I feel like I'm an old school guy
• 42:39
Speaker 6: living in a twenty four year old's body. I'm being
• 42:41
Speaker 6: dead off. I'll tell them twenty five next month. And
• 42:43
Speaker 6: I feel like I'm I'm one of the older guys
• 42:45
Speaker 6: when I talk to people about this, I mean.
• 42:47
  Speaker 3: What was that?
• 42:47
Speaker 5: Because you're you've you've been into sports and around sports,
• 42:50
Speaker 5: and you saw it in a certain way that you
• 42:53
Speaker 5: you adapted to what it what it was, and now
• 42:57
Speaker 5: all of a sudden, as you are invested in it,
• 43:00
Speaker 5: you're seeing something totally different.
• 43:02
Speaker 6: Yes, and no, I think I'll say like that. I think.
• 43:05
Speaker 6: I think I'm agreeing with you at the stand point
• 43:07
Speaker 6: of I think whenever you do get into an industry,
• 43:09
Speaker 6: like a coach, you have to adapt. I think that's
• 43:12
Speaker 6: a really big thing. If you're not adapting, then you're
• 43:14
Speaker 6: being content, if that makes sense. But I also I
• 43:18
Speaker 6: also think where I went to high school with such
• 43:20
Speaker 6: a passionate and such a passionate town like Winfield and
• 43:25
Speaker 6: Winfilts had a ton of success. You look at the
• 43:27
Speaker 6: days of Pat McGinnis in basketball and Leon McCoy and football.
• 43:33
Speaker 6: Those are two icons right there in that community that
• 43:35
Speaker 6: have really that really garnered the love of sports in
• 43:39
Speaker 6: that community. And playing in front of your community means
• 43:43
Speaker 6: a lot more than playing in an AAU circuit in
• 43:46
  Speaker 6: my opinion. I mean, I mean, I'll give you a
• 43:48
Speaker 6: great point. We made the state tournament in twenty eighteen.
• 43:52
Speaker 6: And again I'm sound like an old guy when I
• 43:53
Speaker 6: say this, but we made a state tournament in twenty teen.
• 43:55
Speaker 6: I make it sound like it's twenty years ago, but
• 43:57
Speaker 6: it was only six years ago. But we made the
• 43:59
Speaker 6: state tournament and our first round matchup game was a
• 44:01
Speaker 6: six verst three game, nine to thirty in the morning. Okay,
• 44:05
Speaker 6: you're thinking, people are probably in class, people are probably
• 44:07
Speaker 6: sleeping in class, nobody's in school. Just because it's a tournament.
• 44:11
Speaker 6: Town shut down everything. And we're in the locker room.
• 44:15
Speaker 6: I'm not kidding you, Carl, We're sitting in the locker room.
• 44:17
Speaker 6: You can just kind of just feel it, like, you know, whatever,
• 44:18
Speaker 6: you're getting ready for a big game, you kind of
• 44:20
Speaker 6: get that itch. Yeah, you get those chills. And then
• 44:23
Speaker 6: when you when we ran out onto the court. First off,
• 44:25
Speaker 6: I had to make sure I got onto the court
• 44:27
Speaker 6: instead of tripping and busting my face open. But when
• 44:30
Speaker 6: you get onto that court and you're running through that
• 44:31
Speaker 6: tunnel in the in the what was then called the
• 44:33
Speaker 6: Charleston Civic Center, just an absolute uproar, just an absolute
• 44:38
Speaker 6: uproar from not only the parents that were there, but
• 44:42
Speaker 6: from when I was told there were six school busses
• 44:44
Speaker 6: that took students that day to the game, and there
• 44:47
Speaker 6: are pictures of it. It was a blackout and the whole,
• 44:51
Speaker 6: like the whole entire side that had Winfield was just
• 44:54
Speaker 6: covered in Winfield gear. And when you see that and
• 44:56
Speaker 6: you hear that, it's just something that just brings back
• 45:00
Speaker 6: such a nostalgic feeling to you whenever you look back
• 45:03
Speaker 6: up like that. Right now, I'm getting chills just thinking
• 45:04
Speaker 6: about it. And then when you win that, when you
• 45:06
Speaker 6: win those big games, it means more. I mean, I
• 45:10
Speaker 6: can remember when we would play Hurricane and that game
• 45:13
Speaker 6: actually meant something, right, And when we beat Hurricane in
• 45:17
Speaker 6: twenty eighteen, on their senior night. It just felt like
• 45:21
Speaker 6: the whole county shut down. I mean, there were people
• 45:23
Speaker 6: from PoCA, Buffalo, Winfield, Hurricane, there are people outside the
• 45:26
Speaker 6: area too that I feel like the community aspect is
• 45:29
Speaker 6: losing a little bit of its evergreen feeling. I wrote
• 45:31
Speaker 6: a colum about that last year. I think it's just
• 45:33
Speaker 6: losing a little bit of that evergreen feeling, but it's
• 45:35
Speaker 6: there still, just because high school sports is so important
• 45:39
Speaker 6: to a state like West Virginia, just like how Marshall
• 45:41
Speaker 6: and WVU is. But I think high school sports is
• 45:44
Speaker 6: the backbone of the state in regards to it. Really,
• 45:47
Speaker 6: what's made it really, what's makes these communities so diverse
• 45:51
Speaker 6: and so unique as well, is because you can just
• 45:54
Speaker 6: feel the passion that these communities have with their with
• 45:57
  Speaker 6: their high schools.
• 45:58
Speaker 5: Well and even like, let's just use Marshall, you know
• 46:01
Speaker 5: that we are slogan. I mean that that slogan in
• 46:05
Speaker 5: its own right when when people say it like like
• 46:08
Speaker 5: they mean it, you know, and they they you know,
• 46:11
Speaker 5: so they're they're so tired and connected to it, and
• 46:14
Speaker 5: and I just and I and I think.
• 46:18
Speaker 3: We've lost that and we're losing it quicker.
• 46:22
Speaker 5: I think at the at the youngest levels of no commitment,
• 46:27
Speaker 5: no loyalty, no you know, I don't care where I
• 46:30
Speaker 5: play as long as my kid is he gets this.
• 46:34
Speaker 3: Whatever that is, that's that's not, that's not.
• 46:40
Speaker 5: Real reality, and it and and it's not and you're
• 46:44
Speaker 5: not and you're taking one of the lessons that sports
• 46:48
Speaker 5: brings team unity. You win together, you lose together, you
• 46:54
Speaker 5: lose all of that just for the sake of me,
• 47:00
Speaker 5: you know, because it's it's just me, my son. That's
• 47:03
Speaker 5: all I care about. I just want to make sure
• 47:04
Speaker 5: he gets the best situation that he can be.
• 47:08
Speaker 3: I have made the argument that winning consistently winning.
• 47:17
Speaker 5: Does not help you as much as losing, because and
• 47:24
Speaker 5: and and what I mean by that how you handle losing.
• 47:29
Speaker 3: If you can handle losing and still give your best.
• 47:35
Speaker 5: The first time that guy who's won fifteen games in
• 47:38
Speaker 5: a row, he loses, he's done. Let's say you went
• 47:43
Speaker 5: all the way to the state championship, You go to
• 47:44
Speaker 5: state championship and lose all of a sudden, Now you're
• 47:49
Speaker 5: you're devastated. I've lost so many games in my lifetime.
• 47:55
Speaker 5: My second year in the pros, we went to I
• 47:59
Speaker 5: think we want two games maybe three, maybe mix three,
• 48:04
Speaker 5: and guys were guys that played that you. I remember
• 48:07
Speaker 5: a guy named Dennis Johnson. He played at USC. He
• 48:10
Speaker 5: hadn't lost three games in his entire college career. And
• 48:18
Speaker 5: you know, and I'm like, you know, game eight. You
• 48:22
Speaker 5: know I'm still I'm like still playing. You know, I
• 48:25
Speaker 5: could still play because I've used to. I'm used to
• 48:29
Speaker 5: playing on the downside, being on the down side of it.
• 48:33
Speaker 5: I think that you lose when you when you treat
• 48:38
  Speaker 5: sports individually.
• 48:39
Speaker 3: I think that you miss.
• 48:42
Speaker 5: The excitement of winning, but the lessons that losing creates.
• 48:46
Speaker 5: And I'm not promoting losing. I'm not, by no, by
• 48:49
Speaker 5: no stretch. Don't get a twist that I am not
• 48:51
Speaker 5: promoting losing. I am just simply saying that losing is
• 48:58
Speaker 5: not as bad as you think, if it's treated right,
• 49:01
Speaker 5: if it's done right.
• 49:02
Speaker 6: I think losing teaches you more than winning does. Absolutely,
• 49:06
Speaker 6: And I think when you go through those losses, you
• 49:09
Speaker 6: learn not only more about you know, whenever you lose,
• 49:14
Speaker 6: you more, you learn more not only about the team,
• 49:16
Speaker 6: but who you are as an individual. And I think
• 49:20
Speaker 6: along that then I'll give me one second. Yeah, I
• 49:22
Speaker 6: think whenever you lose and you reflect on it, You're
• 49:26
Speaker 6: you're learning more so about how can you respond from losing,
• 49:30
Speaker 6: compared to just again I'm gonna use the C word,
• 49:33
Speaker 6: and being content with it and being complacent with it
• 49:36
Speaker 6: and then just not doing anything about it. And you're
• 49:38
Speaker 6: not making yourself better by loose, by by learning from it.
• 49:42
Speaker 6: You're just so numb to it that you don't want
• 49:44
Speaker 6: to do anything about it. There have been teams that
• 49:47
Speaker 6: have that have lost games like look at Poka, and
• 49:50
Speaker 6: I love and I love a lot of people down
• 49:52
Speaker 6: in Poka, I really truly do. I got a lot
• 49:54
Speaker 6: of good friends that graduated from there. I know a
• 49:56
Speaker 6: lot of people down there, So this is no disrespect
• 49:58
Speaker 6: towards them. But Poker's football team did not win a
• 50:01
Speaker 6: football game for a number of years. But then once
• 50:05
Speaker 6: they started once once they continued to bring in more
• 50:07
Speaker 6: and more and more excitement, and those kids continued to
• 50:10
Speaker 6: buy into what was being told. They got they were winning,
• 50:14
Speaker 6: they were making the state playoffs, they were advancing in
• 50:16
Speaker 6: the state playoffs. They won, they made the state playoffs,
• 50:18
Speaker 6: I believe four consecutive years, at one point four or
• 50:21
Speaker 6: five consecutive years. It got to that point. During that
• 50:25
Speaker 6: stretch where winning was so much fun. But when they lost, yeah,
• 50:29
Speaker 6: it took him back to the past. But they also
• 50:31
Speaker 6: learned from it and that's what helped them get better
• 50:33
Speaker 6: at it along the way.
• 50:34
Speaker 5: That's see, that's the key is learning, learning from that win,
• 50:41
Speaker 5: learning from that loss. And I think when you don't
• 50:46
Speaker 5: like so, let's say we're on the same team and
• 50:49
Speaker 5: we lose. You run a foul line and you missed
• 50:53
Speaker 5: a shot and we lost. Now I'm sitting at my
• 50:58
Speaker 5: locker talking to a buddy talking about if he'd have
• 51:03
Speaker 5: made the shot, we'd have won.
• 51:05
  Speaker 6: That's not team.
• 51:07
Speaker 3: That's not team. I should be coming over to you.
• 51:10
Speaker 5: Hey, man, don't worry about it, because it didn't have
• 51:13
Speaker 5: to come down to that shot. We could have we
• 51:16
Speaker 5: could have already. We could have been up five points.
• 51:19
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 51:19
Speaker 5: That just so happened to be the last play of
• 51:23
Speaker 5: the game, and unfortunately you happen to be the guy
• 51:26
Speaker 5: on the foul line and you missed it. No, no, no, no,
• 51:29
Speaker 5: love loss, Keep your head up. I don't see that anymore.
• 51:34
  Speaker 3: I don't. I don't know if that's if that's there.
• 51:39
Speaker 6: I think it is there some for some programs.
• 51:41
Speaker 5: Some pro and if and if it is, they're successful
• 51:44
Speaker 5: and that doesn't mean they're in the playoffs or any
• 51:47
  Speaker 5: of that.
• 51:47
Speaker 3: That means that they are just a legitimate team.
• 51:51
Speaker 5: Because when you say team, it doesn't have to be
• 51:54
Speaker 5: a team just because there's seventy guys. A team is
• 52:00
Speaker 5: seventy guys who are all committed into one one program
• 52:06
Speaker 5: and one direction, and that is difficult to do.
• 52:09
Speaker 6: It builds character, absolutely, it builds character because I think
• 52:13
Speaker 6: again going back to when you lose, when you win together,
• 52:15
Speaker 6: you lose together that mindset, you're also building your character
• 52:19
Speaker 6: and the team morale through that. If that makes sense, absolutely,
• 52:23
Speaker 6: and I think and I think that, I think the
• 52:25
Speaker 6: mindset or the new norm will call it that of
• 52:29
Speaker 6: what society is, everybody's a winner. I think that that
• 52:32
Speaker 6: to me. And again I'm sound like an old guy
• 52:34
Speaker 6: when I say this, but that does nothing to a
• 52:39
Speaker 6: five six, seven, eight year old whenever you're telling them, hey,
• 52:41
Speaker 6: you still lost, but you're still a winner. Right, There
• 52:46
Speaker 6: are certain scenarios where that's okay. I'm not saying that
• 52:48
Speaker 6: that that that's not the case at all. Those are
• 52:51
Speaker 6: different scenarios that and people can explore.
• 52:52
Speaker 3: That on their own.
• 52:54
Speaker 6: But when when you're at a young age as a parent.
• 52:58
  Speaker 6: I'm not a parent, but when I when I was
• 53:01
Speaker 6: growing up and my dad was teaching me how to
• 53:04
Speaker 6: how to get past the loss, and how to use
• 53:07
Speaker 6: a win as motivation and all these different things, he
• 53:10
Speaker 6: just it just he made the Certainly, the conversations whenever
• 53:14
Speaker 6: you won were a lot easier than the ones you lost, obviously, right,
• 53:18
Speaker 6: but those those losing times made for better conversation, and
• 53:23
Speaker 6: that helped me whenever he whenever, whether it be growing
• 53:26
Speaker 6: up playing billy ball, middle school basketball, or even high
• 53:29
Speaker 6: school for that matter, and those conversations were weren't always
• 53:33
Speaker 6: the easiest, but I think it built something in me
• 53:37
Speaker 6: that allowed a fire or competitive fire. Now so at
• 53:40
Speaker 6: this age where whenever you're in the business world, it's
• 53:42
  Speaker 6: still it's still a competition, but now so it's a
• 53:45
Speaker 6: little bit different compared to whenever you're playing sports growing up.
• 53:47
Speaker 3: What's interesting to me is I got my dad.
• 53:50
Speaker 5: We talked about wins and losses after the morning after
• 53:54
Speaker 5: the game. We didn't do it the night of the game.
• 53:57
Speaker 5: We would do it the next morning at breakfast. And
• 53:59
Speaker 5: I've said this a thousand times on the show, and
• 54:03
Speaker 5: similar to you we're talking about the game, and not
• 54:09
Speaker 5: so much the wins and losses, but the goods and
• 54:11
Speaker 5: bads of mine because his whole, his whole thing. We
• 54:16
Speaker 5: shared the same dream of me playing and and and
• 54:19
Speaker 5: it wasn't he was part of my dream of wanting it.
• 54:22
Speaker 5: It wasn't him pushing me, but because we both wanted it,
• 54:28
Speaker 5: he kept the push.
• 54:30
Speaker 3: So the difference is win or lose. We could have
• 54:36
Speaker 3: won the first playoff game.
• 54:39
Speaker 5: He's gonna he's gonna tell me the plays that I missed,
• 54:43
Speaker 5: you know, the tackle that I missed, the hit that
• 54:46
Speaker 5: I should have made. You know, he's gonna he's gonna
• 54:49
Speaker 5: give me all of that. And while I thought that
• 54:52
Speaker 5: was it got to a point to where it was
• 54:54
Speaker 5: the worst thing that I just hated to have to
• 54:56
Speaker 5: sit down and have this conversation because man, I'm doing
• 54:58
Speaker 5: some good stuff, but I couldn't understand we weren't talking
• 55:02
Speaker 5: about any of those.
• 55:05
Speaker 3: I think that type of conversation.
• 55:09
Speaker 5: Is needed more for some of these kids to actually
• 55:14
Speaker 5: take time to talk to them and tell them, as
• 55:18
Speaker 5: a parent what they're doing. Don't blame it on the coach,
• 55:22
Speaker 5: you know, judge your kid on what they're doing. On
• 55:26
Speaker 5: the court, on the field, on the track, wherever that
• 55:29
Speaker 5: thing is. Judge them. And I'm not telling you to
• 55:32
Speaker 5: be harsh. I'm telling you to teach them, show them,
• 55:36
Speaker 5: let them know. If your kids standing there at the
• 55:38
Speaker 5: fence looking out in the audience, you need to have
• 55:44
Speaker 5: that conversation. Tell them, No, that's not what you do.
• 55:46
Speaker 5: You need to be listening to the coach. But the
• 55:49
Speaker 5: moment that the coach does something, now, we're protective of
• 55:53
  Speaker 5: the child.
• 55:54
Speaker 3: And you know what do you want? You know what
• 55:58
  Speaker 3: I'm saying.
• 55:58
Speaker 5: I mean my question to that is is I'm giving
• 56:02
Speaker 5: you an option of how maybe that you might want
• 56:05
Speaker 5: to impact their kid. And I keep trying to tell
• 56:08
Speaker 5: you this is difficult because parents will talk to their kids,
• 56:12
Speaker 5: they want to come out talk to their kids. They'll
• 56:14
Speaker 5: come to the fence, the kid goes to the fence,
• 56:18
Speaker 5: and that's just not that's not doable. And I just
• 56:21
Speaker 5: don't know, like where, like how do we get away
• 56:25
Speaker 5: from this now, because we're so far in that I
• 56:28
Speaker 5: don't even know if there's a way out of this now.
• 56:31
  Speaker 5: I think that's a really good question. I mean, I
• 56:35
Speaker 5: think time will tell. I mean, that's a very cliche
• 56:37
Speaker 5: way of saying it. But I think.
• 56:40
Speaker 6: You mentioned something a few minutes ago that I think
• 56:43
Speaker 6: is going to be very apparent twenty thirty, forty years
• 56:46
Speaker 6: from now, and that is a player is just as
• 56:49
Speaker 6: is just as good as whenever they were coached then
• 56:51
Speaker 6: compared to where they are now. Yeah, and whenever you
• 56:55
Speaker 6: do have a coach that is so I want to say,
• 57:00
Speaker 6: not really, whenever, whenever you have a coach is so
• 57:03
Speaker 6: hard on you and continues to push you at such
• 57:06
Speaker 6: a high rate that intail can make that player better
• 57:11
Speaker 6: long term than what they are in that moment, if
• 57:13
Speaker 6: that makes sense, absolutely, And that to me was was
• 57:18
Speaker 6: really apparent to me in high school. I mean, I'll
• 57:19
Speaker 6: give you a great example. You know, my first couple
• 57:22
Speaker 6: of years of basketball I played. I played my freshman
• 57:25
Speaker 6: and sophomore year. I took a lot of things for granted.
• 57:27
Speaker 6: I'll just put it to you like that I did.
• 57:29
Speaker 6: And I didn't play basketball my junior year because you know,
• 57:33
Speaker 6: I was under this impression that I was going to
• 57:34
Speaker 6: get what I wanted without even having to work for it.
• 57:36
Speaker 6: And that was just that's just a thing on myself
• 57:39
Speaker 6: that I took for granted. And I took a lot
• 57:41
Speaker 6: of other things, for granted, and when I I don't
• 57:44
Speaker 6: know what what happened to to get that really that
• 57:48
Speaker 6: sense of realization of something needs to change if I
• 57:50
Speaker 6: want to play my senior year. Because I played church ball,
• 57:53
Speaker 6: I played rec league ball. But when I when I
• 57:56
Speaker 6: finally had that decision and I came to the realization
• 57:59
Speaker 6: that I want to play my senior year, I went
• 58:02
Speaker 6: to my dad about it. And obviously my dad who
• 58:05
Speaker 6: played collegiate basketball as well, so he's he knows a
• 58:08
Speaker 6: thing or two about it. But whenever he told me
• 58:11
Speaker 6: that I'm going to have to do certain things to
• 58:13
Speaker 6: commit my body to getting back into shape and getting
• 58:16
Speaker 6: back into the basketball shape that's needed, then I took it.
• 58:19
Speaker 6: I took it to heart, and he told me, he's like,
• 58:21
Speaker 6: the first year you have to do, you have to
• 58:22
Speaker 6: run a mile every single day, every single day from
• 58:25
Speaker 6: now when we're having this conversation until you have tryouts
• 58:28
Speaker 6: in November. You got to run a mile every single day.
• 58:30
Speaker 6: That's why I did. I ran a mile every single day,
• 58:32
Speaker 6: and it got to the point where I ran a
• 58:33
Speaker 6: six thirty mile, which is which was my best time
• 58:36
Speaker 6: I've ever ran a mile. You look at me now
• 58:38
Speaker 6: and you're like, you ran six thirty mile, that's crazy.
• 58:40
Speaker 6: But no, I think I think there are parents out
• 58:44
Speaker 6: there that put this this idea in their in their
• 58:49
Speaker 6: kids head that they are going to go play Division
• 58:51
Speaker 6: one basketball at a P four level. There are parents
• 58:54
Speaker 6: out there that are going to tell their kids that,
• 58:56
Speaker 6: you know, you are going to be a number one
• 58:58
Speaker 6: overall pick in a professional league. The fact is you're
• 59:01
Speaker 6: just not going to get there unless you have that
• 59:04
Speaker 6: competitive drive and you have that sense of realization that
• 59:07
Speaker 6: you were going to have to work your tail off
• 59:10
Speaker 6: to get where you want to be. And I don't
• 59:13
Speaker 6: think from many levels you have that. Again, when you
• 59:17
Speaker 6: have a parent like that and you have a coach
• 59:19
Speaker 6: like that, you just go through the motions. You take
• 59:22
Speaker 6: things for granted. But whenever you do have a parent
• 59:25
Speaker 6: and again I was very very blessed to have two
• 59:27
Speaker 6: great and supportive parents that really pushed me to be
• 59:30
Speaker 6: the better me. Whenever you have parents like that and
• 59:32
Speaker 6: you have coaches like that, I mean I had a
• 59:33
Speaker 6: great middle school coach in Dick Rife at Bible Center.
• 59:36
Speaker 6: I mean he was a great coach, a great motivator,
• 59:38
Speaker 6: He got the best out of me. Then Brian England.
• 59:41
Speaker 6: I took a lot of things for granted whenever he
• 59:43
Speaker 6: was coaching, but looking back on it now, he was
• 59:45
Speaker 6: a really good coach and just teaching the game and
• 59:48
Speaker 6: teaching myself how to be better as an individual. Chris
• 59:51
Speaker 6: Stevens at Winfield, my senior year coach I was referring
• 59:53
Speaker 6: to earlier. He did a lot of things and really
• 59:55
Speaker 6: pushed me, even more so than I ever thought I
• 59:57
Speaker 6: was going to get pushed before. And he taught me
• 1:00:00
Speaker 6: some things along the way that, yeah, I didn't agree
• 1:00:02
Speaker 6: with at the time, but I look back on it
• 1:00:04
Speaker 6: now and it made me a better me. And in
• 1:00:07
Speaker 6: the same way with my dad. My dad coached me
• 1:00:08
Speaker 6: for a number of years. Was it always fun, No,
• 1:00:12
Speaker 6: absolutely not, But along that way I took. I still
• 1:00:16
Speaker 6: take bits and pieces from what he taught me coaching
• 1:00:18
Speaker 6: wise that I apply now that has helped me become
• 1:00:21
Speaker 6: who I am at only twenty four.
• 1:00:23
Speaker 5: And I'll close as we get ready to get out
• 1:00:27
Speaker 5: here for today. I think when it comes to the parent,
• 1:00:34
Speaker 5: I think, if you are listening to this segment of
• 1:00:36
Speaker 5: the show, I think pushing your child, supporting them, but
• 1:00:44
Speaker 5: you I think the push has to be the most
