- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis 27.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Jacob tricks Isaac.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Isaac grew old and his eyes became so weak that he could not see clearly.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: One day he called his older son Esau to him and said, Son, Esau answered, Here I am.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Isaac said, I am old.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe I will die soon.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: So take your bow and arrows and go hunting.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Kill an animal for me to eat.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Prepare the food that I love.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Bring it to me and I will eat it.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Then I will bless you before you die.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: So Esau went hunting.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Rebecca was listening when Isaac told this to his son Esau.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Rebecca said to her son Jacob, listen, I heard your father talking to your brother Esau.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Your father said, Kill an animal for me to eat.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Prepare the food for me and I will eat it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Then with the Lord as witness, I will bless you before I die.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So listen, son, and do what I told you.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Go out to our goats and bring me two young ones.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I will prepare them the way your father loves them.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Then you will carry the food to your father and he will bless you before he dies.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: But Jacob told his mother, Rebecca, my brother Esau is a hairy man, I am not hairy like him.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: If my father touches me, he will know that I am not Esau.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Then he will not bless me, he will curse me because I tried to trick him.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: So Rebecca said to him, I will accept the blame if there is trouble.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Do what I said, go get the goats for me.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So Jacob went out and got two goats and brought them to his mother.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: His mother cooked the goats in the special way that Isaac loved.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Then Rebecca took the clothes that her older son Esau loved to wear.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: She put these clothes on the younger son Jacob.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: She took the skins of the goats and put them on Jacob's hand and on his neck.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Then she got the food she had cooked and gave it to Jacob.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Jacob went to his father and said, Father.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: His father answered, Yes, son, who are you?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Jacob said to his father, I'm Esau, your first son.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: I've done what you told me.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Now sit up and eat the meat from the animals that I hunted for you.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Then you can bless me.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: But Isaac said to his son, How have you hunted and killed the animals so quickly?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Jacob answered, Because the Lord your God allowed me to find the animals quickly.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Then Isaac said to Jacob, Come near to me so that I can feel you, my son.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: If I can feel you, I will know if you are really my son Esau.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: So Jacob went to Isaac his father.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Isaac felt him and said, Your voice sounds like Jacob's voice, but your arms are hairy like the arms of Esau.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Isaac did not know it was Jacob because his arms were hairy like Esau's.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: So Isaac blessed Jacob.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Isaac said, Are you really my son Esau?
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Jacob answered, Yes, I am.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Then Isaac said, Bring me the food, I will eat it and bless you.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So Jacob gave him the food and he ate it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Then Jacob gave him some wine, and he drank it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Then Isaac said to him, Son, come near and kiss me.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: So Jacob went to his father and kissed him.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: When Isaac smelled Esau's clothes, he blessed him and said, My son smells like the fields the Lord has blessed.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: May God give you plenty of rain, good crops and wine.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: May the nations serve you, and many people bow down to you.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: You will rule over your brothers, your mother's sons will bow down to you and obey you.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Whoever curses you will be cursed, whoever blesses you will be blessed.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Isaac finished blessing Jacob.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Then just as Jacob left his father Isaac, Esau came in from hunting.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Esau prepared the food in the special way that his father loved.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: He brought it to his father and said, Father, I am your son, get up and eat the meat from the animals that I killed for you.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Then you can bless me.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: But Isaac said to him, Who are you?
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: He answered, I am your son, your first son, Esau.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Then Isaac became so upset he began to shake.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: He said, Then who was it that cooked and brought me food before you came?
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I ate it all and I blessed him.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Now it is too late to take back my blessing.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: When Esau heard his father's words, he became very angry and bitter.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: He cried out and said to his father, then bless me also, father.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Isaac said, Your brother tricked me, he came and took your blessing.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Esau said, His name is Jacob.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: That is the right name for him.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: He has tricked me twice.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: He took away my rights as the firstborn son, and now he has taken away my blessing.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Then Esau said, Have you saved any blessing for me?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Isaac answered, I have already given Jacob the power to rule over you, and I said all his brothers would be his servants.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I have given him the blessing for much grain and wine.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: There is nothing left to give you, my son.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: But Esau continued to beg his father.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Do you have only one blessing, father?
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Bless me also, father.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Esau began to cry.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Then Isaac said to him, You will not live on good land, you will not have much rain, you will have to fight to live, and you will be a slave to your brother, but when you fight to be free, you will break away from his control.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: After that Esau hated Jacob because of this blessing.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Esau said to himself, My father will soon die, and after we are finished with that I will kill Jacob.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Rebekah heard about Esau's plans to kill Jacob.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: She sent for Jacob and said to him, Listen, your brother Esau is planning to kill you.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: So son, do what I say.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: My brother Laban is living in Haran.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Go to him and hide.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Stay with him for a short time until your brother stops being angry.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: When your brother forgets what you did to him, I will send a servant to bring you back.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: I don't want to lose both of my sons the same day.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Then Rebekah said to Isaac, Your son Esau married Hittite women.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I am very upset about this because they are not our people.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I'll have nothing to live for if Jacob marries one of these women.
