- 0:02Speaker 1: Coming to you from fabulous Las Vegas. The right side
- 0:07Speaker 1: is the winning side. The late move is the correct move.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Sports betting capital of the world. We all know when
- 0:14Speaker 1: a sharp like me weighs in the lines move, it's
- 0:17Speaker 1: a party for your ears. This is the buffet with
- 0:26Speaker 1: Chad and Scooch. I want to buy that guy a buffet. Hello,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and welcome to the Buffet with Chad and Scooch. Scooch
- 0:40Speaker 1: is back on the show after many many weeks off,
- 0:43Speaker 1: basically because, like you know, if he takes a summer off,
- 0:46Speaker 1: he doesn't really do anything. He just lives in his
- 0:48Speaker 1: Italian villa and relaxes, and everybody else does the work
- 0:52Speaker 1: and Scooch just smokes his cigars and drinks his sport
- 0:56Speaker 1: and watches movies and his massive court yard in the
- 1:00Speaker 1: center of his house. But today he's gonna join me. Scooch,
- 1:03Speaker 1: as everybody knows, is the bookmaker for the Orleans and
- 1:07Speaker 1: all the Boyd gaming books in the state of Nevada.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Later on in the show, Summer League is a massive,
- 1:13Speaker 1: massive topic this year in sports. I would say after
- 1:17Speaker 1: the World Cup, people are talking more about Summer League
- 1:20Speaker 1: as it comes out of free agency than they are
- 1:22Speaker 1: talking about Major League Baseball or anything else. Certainly we're
- 1:27Speaker 1: seeing that at UM at the Action Network this year,
- 1:30Speaker 1: like the amount of attention people are paying a summer
- 1:32Speaker 1: league from a betting perspective, just from a traffic perspective,
- 1:35Speaker 1: from a watching it, excitement about the players. Um, that's
- 1:39Speaker 1: been great. So later on in the show, Tom Tolbert,
- 1:42Speaker 1: longtime NBA player, longtime friend of the podcast, long time
- 1:47Speaker 1: better host of his own afternoon radio show on K
- 1:51Speaker 1: and b R in San Francisco, He's gonna join. We're
- 1:53Speaker 1: gonna talk about how you manage to love the NBA
- 1:56Speaker 1: and bet on Summer League and what does it mean
- 1:59Speaker 1: for the world when that's happening, Because we love it.
- 2:03Speaker 1: It's been fantastic, fantastic. Bob Scucci, Hey, you know, I
- 2:11Speaker 1: wish I could say that I've been, you know, enjoying
- 2:13Speaker 1: this summer, you know, smoking my cigars and drinking my
- 2:17Speaker 1: ports and everything. This this summer has been one of
- 2:19Speaker 1: the busiest we've ever had. And with the Supreme Court
- 2:24Speaker 1: ruling uh a couple of months ago, so uh, it's
- 2:29Speaker 1: anything but relaxing this this year. What does it mean
- 2:33Speaker 1: for you? What have you been doing traveling around to
- 2:38Speaker 1: a lot of our jurisdictions in in preparation for um
- 2:42Speaker 1: uh sports wagering in other states, and meeting with regulators
- 2:47Speaker 1: and meeting with a lot of our folks that run
- 2:51Speaker 1: the properties in in our other states, and UH kind
- 2:54Speaker 1: of preparing the roadmap and UH working with uh different
- 2:59Speaker 1: systems that that can apply to different states and different structures.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So it's been a whole new addition to UH, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: my normal job description, which states is board gaming going
- 3:14Speaker 1: to be able to activate sports betting in come to far?
- 3:19Speaker 1: What we hope to have Mississippi uh pretty shortly, definitely
- 3:23Speaker 1: before football season. So I would say I would say
- 3:26Speaker 1: Mississippi is the first one to go. Some people have
- 3:29Speaker 1: said Mississippi is going to be the sports betting capital
- 3:33Speaker 1: of the country at some point in the near future.
- 3:36Speaker 1: What is your perception? What is your comment on that?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Mr Scucci? I still the Vegas is still going to
- 3:42Speaker 1: be the capital. Mississippi is going to be a nice market, uh,
- 3:47Speaker 1: especially down south in that Biloxi region. Uh So it's
- 3:52Speaker 1: gonna be a real, real, nice, strong market. But I
- 3:55Speaker 1: still Vegas is going to remain the capital. Look at you,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you are defending your turf that damn right. What would
- 4:06Speaker 1: you say right now? What would you say? I want
- 4:09Speaker 1: to talk about summer leagues. I'm just fascinated by summer
- 4:12Speaker 1: league and you guys are taking action on this right now.
- 4:14Speaker 1: UM name for me in order of action so far,
- 4:21Speaker 1: this summer Summer League, World Cup, MLB, Golf, Tennis in
- 4:32Speaker 1: in order. So it's it's it's a little unfair. MLB
- 4:36Speaker 1: is still tops only because there are so many games.
- 4:39Speaker 1: So you know, if you're just looking at overall handled
- 4:42Speaker 1: then obviously, uh, MLB will be at the top. But
- 4:46Speaker 1: World Cup is just right there. And just think that
- 4:51Speaker 1: there's just a few games compared to the entire Major
- 4:54Speaker 1: League Baseball schedule, just those few games can rival what
- 4:57Speaker 1: we do. Um you know the higher day with with
- 5:01Speaker 1: Major League Baseball. So World World Cup is huge. Uh
- 5:06Speaker 1: And this summer it's just been fantastic the action that
- 5:08Speaker 1: we've had, a lot of the games went our way.
- 5:11Speaker 1: We got we got a lot of draws after ninety
- 5:14Speaker 1: after regulations, so the draws are always good for us.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Uh So we we got a lot of those. UM.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So World Cup has just been tremendous and uh, I
- 5:23Speaker 1: would put it up right on par with MLB. Um,
- 5:27Speaker 1: next I would probably say is I'll we'll put Summer
- 5:33Speaker 1: League right behind that, pretty pretty close with with golf
- 5:36Speaker 1: and tennis. But but Summer League is it's popular. I mean,
- 5:41Speaker 1: it's something pretty new for for the betters in the summer.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I mean just a few years ago we didn't even
- 5:48Speaker 1: book it. So, um, it's just another added item to
- 5:52Speaker 1: the vast sports betting menu that we all have. Now
- 5:56Speaker 1: you might say you've added it to the buffet very good. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 1: we added it right to the end of the line there.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Speaking of which, go to the buffet page and iTunes
- 6:08Speaker 1: rate the podcast, review the podcast, send us your comments. Um,
- 6:13Speaker 1: I want you to unsubscribe to this podcast, and then
- 6:17Speaker 1: I want you to resubscribe to this podcast, because that
- 6:20Speaker 1: is what matters most in the iTunes charts. Scooch, let
- 6:24Speaker 1: me run a scenario by you. Okay, you ready? Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I have two sons, fourteen and eleven, neither of whom
- 6:33Speaker 1: like sports very much at all. But the eleven year old,
- 6:36Speaker 1: this uh, this summer, for some reason, has gotten into
- 6:42Speaker 1: the World Cup and he's been wanting to watch it,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and he's been wanting to talk about it, and so
- 6:48Speaker 1: we watched Uh England UM beat Sweden last weekend. He
- 6:53Speaker 1: was freaking out. Thought it was the greatest thing in
- 6:54Speaker 1: the world. Yesterday he we're recording this on on Wednesday
- 6:58Speaker 1: afternoon before England plays. Great show. Uh. And yesterday we
- 7:02Speaker 1: were texting each other the whole time I was at
- 7:03Speaker 1: work about France and Belgium. We were on Belgium the
- 7:08Speaker 1: night before that match. I said to him, do you
- 7:12Speaker 1: want to make a bet on this match? And he's like, okay.
- 7:15Speaker 1: So I went to my UH bookmaking app and I
- 7:21Speaker 1: put in a fifty dollar bet on France. I think
- 7:24Speaker 1: they were like plus one ten or something to be Belgium.
- 7:28Speaker 1: We won. So yesterday, Uh, last night I'm in the city.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I'm not at home this week. I'm texting with my son.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I'm like, how great was that match? And I wrote,
- 7:39Speaker 1: we won, We're going to the finals, Viva le France,
- 7:42Speaker 1: And all he texted back was we won fifty bucks. Well,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you're molding him really young to be a sports better orange.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I thought it was very on brand, right, And so
- 7:55Speaker 1: then this morning I'm in the city, I face time him.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We're talking and I say to him, uh, we got
- 8:04Speaker 1: England and um Croatia today. What do you think? He goes, well,
- 8:08Speaker 1: I really want England to win, but Croatia beat the
- 8:13Speaker 1: rigged Russians. Oh my god, Like, who is this kid?
- 8:20Speaker 1: He's eleven years old? Where does he get like that?
- 8:23Speaker 1: Why is he so street savvy all of a sudden?
- 8:25Speaker 1: So I say to him, do you want to bet?
- 8:28Speaker 1: And he goes yeah, But I think we should bet less.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And I'm thinking to myself, this kid is a bank
- 8:39Speaker 1: role management natural. He wants to keep some He's like,
- 8:45Speaker 1: he doesn't feel that good about it. He doesn't feel
- 8:47Speaker 1: as good about this as he did about France Belgium.
- 8:49Speaker 1: We both believe France is going to win the World Cup.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I actually said it on Action network dot com before
- 8:54Speaker 1: the tournament began, that I believe France would win the
- 8:57Speaker 1: World Cup. So I'm looking a little bit like a
- 8:59Speaker 1: genius right now. But I have two questions for you. One,
- 9:04Speaker 1: is my kid not a genius? He's a natural. Two
- 9:09Speaker 1: do you think I'm making a mistake by uh indoctrinating
- 9:13Speaker 1: him so early? What are the pitfalls? What are the benefits? Well,
- 9:19Speaker 1: the benefits is that he's uh, he's going to be
- 9:22Speaker 1: well versed. Uh, you know, he's gonna have that streets
- 9:26Speaker 1: sense that streets smarts, uh, from a from an early age.
- 9:29Speaker 1: A lot of people go their whole lives and never
- 9:31Speaker 1: really acquire that. So that's the benefit. The drawback is
- 9:34Speaker 1: is he may not be able to contain it at
- 9:37Speaker 1: some point in his life, and it may it consumes
- 9:41Speaker 1: some people. And you know that could be good or bad.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But uh, you know, I I was indoctrinated at a
- 9:48Speaker 1: young age myself, and I think it worked out. You're
- 9:53Speaker 1: living in the life of luxury, so it has worked out.
- 9:55Speaker 1: But I do worry about it a little bit. Like
- 9:57Speaker 1: I agree. I like I like the idea that my
- 10:02Speaker 1: kid is learning early about sort of risk and analysis
- 10:08Speaker 1: and um, sort of those particular things, right, Like that's
- 10:13Speaker 1: what life is. Life is about making calculated risks in
- 10:17Speaker 1: every decision, uh that you make. And so I like
- 10:21Speaker 1: the idea that we're talking about it and then he
- 10:22Speaker 1: gets it. And I like that he immediately got like,
- 10:25Speaker 1: we don't feel as good about England and Croatia as
- 10:29Speaker 1: we did about France and Belgium. So I like that
- 10:31Speaker 1: he instinctively knew we were going to bet less. He's not,
- 10:35Speaker 1: He's not looking to throw it all back. I like.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I like that he's not like, he's not chasing, he's
- 10:40Speaker 1: not thinking like I'm all in, Um, well, you have
- 10:43Speaker 1: to wait till you have to wait till he loses though,
- 10:45Speaker 1: to see if he's a chaser. Right, you're you're right?
- 10:49Speaker 1: So um But should I even have been allowing him
- 10:55Speaker 1: to do this? Oh? Sure? Sure? I mean, you know
- 11:00Speaker 1: you're not gonna You're not gonna turn him into uh,
- 11:05Speaker 1: you know, a compulsive gambler. I don't think, I mean,
- 11:07Speaker 1: but but I think it's exciting to have that element
- 11:12Speaker 1: UH involved in the sport as I mean, we've all
- 11:15Speaker 1: seen how having something at stake in the game draws
- 11:19Speaker 1: you closer to to the match and gives it that
- 11:24Speaker 1: extra added interest. I mean, there's something about the money
- 11:27Speaker 1: element that adds a whole new dimension. You know. I'm
- 11:31Speaker 1: looking back back on on Saturday's game between between Russia
- 11:35Speaker 1: and Croatia. Everybody had UH Russia in that match and
- 11:42Speaker 1: the draw was going to be real big for the house,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and we have a separate bet on who's the team
- 11:48Speaker 1: to advance, but you know the main bet that the
- 11:51Speaker 1: most money that everybody in the room bet was on Russia.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So that the yelling and the screaming, the crowd is roaring, uh,
- 11:59Speaker 1: you know, on on on every kind of movement, and
- 12:02Speaker 1: at the end of regulation when it was tied, there
- 12:05Speaker 1: was the entire room deflated and it really didn't matter.
- 12:09Speaker 1: After that, the yelling and the screaming stopped, and when
- 12:13Speaker 1: Croatia finally UH wanted on the on penalty kicks, there
- 12:17Speaker 1: was no roar of the crowd. Everything died down because
- 12:20Speaker 1: all the money was already lost at that point, So
- 12:23Speaker 1: you knew it wasn't so much that people were just
- 12:25Speaker 1: so into Russia and Croatia as as a sporting event.
- 12:30Speaker 1: They wanted to win money on that match and on
- 12:33Speaker 1: and once the money was lost, it's like, all right,
- 12:34Speaker 1: we'll finish watching this thing, but you know, we already
- 12:37Speaker 1: lost our money, so it has an element to it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I get it. I totally get it. And look like,
- 12:43Speaker 1: obviously everyone loves their kids, and mine are fantastic, but
- 12:47Speaker 1: they have never been into anything I'm into, Like every
- 12:50Speaker 1: weekend when kids like parents are watching UH football with
- 12:55Speaker 1: their kids, they're going to football games with their kids,
- 12:57Speaker 1: like my kids are at the age now and a
- 12:59Speaker 1: lot of my friends and their kids are at the
- 13:01Speaker 1: age where they take him away for weekends, Like they'll
- 13:05Speaker 1: go to Chicago for the weekend and they do a
- 13:07Speaker 1: day at Wrigley, a day at Soldier Field, like there,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you know sports fans. My kids just like aren't into it, ironically,
- 13:15Speaker 1: given what I've done with my life. Um, and so
- 13:18Speaker 1: the fact he was into it, I kind of feel
- 13:21Speaker 1: like I gotta go all in because this is a
- 13:24Speaker 1: great way. Like he and I are connecting on this.
- 13:26Speaker 1: It's not anything that his brothers into, it's not anything
- 13:29Speaker 1: that my wife is into, and so I want to
- 13:33Speaker 1: encourage it only because it's fun and it's a great conversation.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I'm a little worried that. Like when I was excited
- 13:40Speaker 1: just because we both wanted France to win and they won,
- 13:43Speaker 1: his first response was a very dry, on emotional we
- 13:48Speaker 1: won fifty bucks? How old is he? Okay? My my
- 13:55Speaker 1: sins on this, it's it's okay right now. But if
- 13:57Speaker 1: you see him coming home with a a bracket or
- 14:00Speaker 1: a super Bowl chart where he's collecting money from his
- 14:03Speaker 1: classmates running a pool, I think you got to start worrying.
- 14:08Speaker 1: What if I see him coming home and like he's
- 14:11Speaker 1: he's riding a tripped out tutor and his and his
- 14:15Speaker 1: like drenched in gold chains. Yeah, I definitely start to
- 14:21Speaker 1: worry because he's making and like junior high. Yeah yeah,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I mean I get so. I mean you're looking at
- 14:31Speaker 1: it from a father's point of view. I think there's
- 14:33Speaker 1: a sense of pride that you've connected with him on
- 14:36Speaker 1: something that you're into that he's seems to have an
- 14:39Speaker 1: interest on. So you're you're connecting on a father's son
- 14:42Speaker 1: level where maybe you need to be just pay attention
- 14:47Speaker 1: as to some of the the pitfalls that may come
- 14:49Speaker 1: along with that. I mean, I gotta be on this
- 14:53Speaker 1: guy like a hawk now. Yeah, yeah, I'd start watching,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know, yeah, all of a sudden, like if you
- 15:00Speaker 1: home one if he comes home one day and says,
- 15:02Speaker 1: you know, I can't believe the Lakers are only laying
- 15:05Speaker 1: two and a half against the Cavaliers and even though
- 15:08Speaker 1: they have Lebron, and then you need to start worrying.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? I'm worried he's gonna be like dad,
- 15:14Speaker 1: I got a dime on Anthony to be tied like
- 15:16Speaker 1: the foot after school of the day. Yeah, Okay, That's
- 15:24Speaker 1: what I'm worried about. Like all of a sudden you
- 15:27Speaker 1: set in bitcoin because like I can, that would be funny. Yah. Um,
- 15:35Speaker 1: So I'm excited about today's game. Well, obviously we're recording
- 15:37Speaker 1: this before the game. It will be out after and
- 15:39Speaker 1: so everyone will know at this point whether or not,
- 15:42Speaker 1: uh the Millman kitty has increased, And if my boy
- 15:47Speaker 1: is now all of a sudden just like on a
- 15:49Speaker 1: hot streak that I've never been on in my life,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and if he is turning into a full on degenerate
- 15:54Speaker 1: gambler that I have influenced and now sent him down
- 15:57Speaker 1: a path to destruction, or if we're gonna find a
- 15:59Speaker 1: way to control right this narrative, this could peep people
- 16:03Speaker 1: glue to the podcast for the next generation for sure. Yeah,
- 16:07Speaker 1: at least at least for the next few years. I'm
- 16:09Speaker 1: curious myself, now, where will end up end up like
- 16:15Speaker 1: living in a in in one of those special cottages
- 16:19Speaker 1: like a lux villa at the Bellaggio. Where is he
- 16:23Speaker 1: gonna end up behind bars because he owes a few
- 16:25Speaker 1: people too much money you don't want him owen ha
- 16:29Speaker 1: ha ha. Oh my god. Here's what's frightening is that
- 16:32Speaker 1: tweeted out that little exchange this morning between me and him,
- 16:36Speaker 1: I'm getting so many likes on this, which makes me
- 16:39Speaker 1: think that basically my followers are just massive degenerates who
- 16:43Speaker 1: don't see the downside of this at all. Ye uh,
- 16:50Speaker 1: so I would say that I'm a little worried about this.
- 16:53Speaker 1: When when did your father introduce you to betting? Uh?
- 16:58Speaker 1: As as are back as I can remember. I mean,
- 17:01Speaker 1: I remember going to race tracks, uh from my earliest memories.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I mean, the smell of cigar smoke and kind of
- 17:10Speaker 1: stale tickets on the floor of a race track. It's
- 17:13Speaker 1: kind of ingrained in my in my memory even from
- 17:16Speaker 1: before I could I could probably even walk maybe. Um,
- 17:19Speaker 1: I remember going to any any place we went on vacation,
- 17:24Speaker 1: you know, like we'd go up to Boston from from
- 17:27Speaker 1: New Jersey, or we'd go down to Virginia. We would
- 17:29Speaker 1: find the local race track and we'd make that part
- 17:32Speaker 1: of the part part of the trip. So I remember,
- 17:36Speaker 1: I remember parley card tickets in some form, you know,
- 17:40Speaker 1: in grade school. Um, I remember the first bet that
- 17:44Speaker 1: I made actually was the ninth when I was a sucker,
- 17:47Speaker 1: when I was you know, nine years old, But I
- 17:50Speaker 1: made a bet on the Yankees to beat the Cincinnati Reds.
- 17:53Speaker 1: In the nineteen seventy six World Series and uh, I
- 17:58Speaker 1: went down in flames as they lost four straight. But uh,
- 18:01Speaker 1: but but yeah, who did you bet but the Yankees?
- 18:05Speaker 1: Of course I was who who did you make the
- 18:08Speaker 1: bet with? Oh? Oh no, it was some some older
- 18:11Speaker 1: kid in school that was kind of a local school bookie.
- 18:15Speaker 1: He was he was taking bets and there was lots
- 18:17Speaker 1: of Yankee fans. So this kid had a little bit
- 18:20Speaker 1: of knowledge and knew that he could get a lot
- 18:21Speaker 1: of people betting the Yankees. And I want to say
- 18:25Speaker 1: it was probably even money bet that I that I took,
- 18:28Speaker 1: and I probably should have been getting like three to
- 18:30Speaker 1: one scooch. There's nothing about this story that makes me
- 18:34Speaker 1: feel good. This is this is exact path that I'm
- 18:40Speaker 1: worried I just sent my kid down. He's going to
- 18:42Speaker 1: be the guy. He's gonna be like there's like the
- 18:46Speaker 1: bookie and school who's taking advantage of all the kids
- 18:50Speaker 1: in central Connecticut who he knows are going to bet
- 18:53Speaker 1: like nothing but Patriots and Red Sox. So he's kind
- 18:56Speaker 1: of like, you know, figure the odds in his favorite Yeah, yeah,
- 19:00Speaker 1: well I could be Uh that's why, uh, I'm a
- 19:03Speaker 1: little interested myself now didn't didn't know who he had
- 19:06Speaker 1: it in them either, did I tell brand New? Yeah,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I can't wait for the finals. I'm going to double
- 19:16Speaker 1: my units on the finals. That's funny based on where
- 19:21Speaker 1: this kid has going. All right, so you think it'll
- 19:23Speaker 1: be okay? Uh? You think I just it's now one
- 19:26Speaker 1: more It's honestly, I've created a problem for myself as
- 19:29Speaker 1: a parent. One more thing. I got to manage one
- 19:32Speaker 1: more thing. I got to look out for. One more thing.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I got to be thinking about one more thing. My
- 19:36Speaker 1: wife and I have to discuss. It's like, just put
- 19:39Speaker 1: it on the checklist of like signals to look for exactly.
- 19:44Speaker 1: I've got the pamphlets on responsible gaming here in Nevada
- 19:47Speaker 1: that we you know, we hand out, so I can
- 19:49Speaker 1: send those two you'll have those on hand, you know.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Oh my god, we are serious trouble. H When did
- 20:00Speaker 1: you start booking summer League. I'm gonna have Tom tolbernon
- 20:04Speaker 1: uh in the second half of the show, and I
- 20:08Speaker 1: want to talk to him about summer League because that
- 20:10Speaker 1: was something that didn't even exist when he was playing
- 20:11Speaker 1: in the NBA. But as a player and as a
- 20:14Speaker 1: better I think he's going to have a really interesting
- 20:16Speaker 1: take on the value and joy of betting Summer League.
- 20:19Speaker 1: When did you start taking book on Summer League making
- 20:21Speaker 1: book on Summer League? Well, we started, uh, you know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: just a couple of years ago, booking certain games, ones
- 20:29Speaker 1: that we thought that would just have more interest, and
- 20:31Speaker 1: we didn't, and we didn't have totals on them, so
- 20:33Speaker 1: they were kind of just like uh spotty. We we
- 20:36Speaker 1: we didn't book it in full the way we do now.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Now it's just part of the regular just like it
- 20:41Speaker 1: would be regular season stuff, booking every game, every total. Um.
- 20:47Speaker 1: So really, uh, this, I would say last year in
- 20:52Speaker 1: almost in full force and this year in full force.
- 20:56Speaker 1: That is insane how much you are booking Summer League.
- 20:59Speaker 1: How do you make lines on it? Like? What are
- 21:01Speaker 1: you what are you thinking about for it? Honestly, it's
- 21:04Speaker 1: it's almost like like throwing darts, you know. But but
- 21:07Speaker 1: fortunately we don't see a whole lot of sharp action
- 21:10Speaker 1: in this, so it's okay if we're if we're far off,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I mean to me, it's it's almost like the w
- 21:16Speaker 1: n B A where we're really have some soft lines
- 21:20Speaker 1: in the w n b A. You know, we just
- 21:22Speaker 1: really can't can't get a grasp on this, and the
- 21:25Speaker 1: wise guys pick us apart on it and pick their spots.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Uh you know, obviously the advantage they have is to
- 21:31Speaker 1: pick the games that they want to bet big on.
- 21:33Speaker 1: And you know, we're putting lines on every game, and
- 21:36Speaker 1: we know that they're not real strong solid lines, so
- 21:39Speaker 1: uh well, we'll just monitor it. As long as we're
- 21:41Speaker 1: not getting a whole lot of sharp action in the
- 21:43Speaker 1: summer league, we'll just kind of roll the dice even
- 21:45Speaker 1: with some soft lines. Why can't you figure out the
- 21:49Speaker 1: w n B A Yeah, boy, it's just it's tough.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I mean, when I say we can't figure it out,
- 21:56Speaker 1: understand if we're right of the time that you know
- 22:01Speaker 1: we've got it figured out. Okay, if we got ten
- 22:03Speaker 1: games on the board and we've got nine solid lines
- 22:05Speaker 1: and one bad line, we still lose for the day
- 22:08Speaker 1: because we lose on that one game. So it's not
- 22:10Speaker 1: that we can't figure out the whole league. It's just
- 22:13Speaker 1: too many instances of one or two games where we
- 22:16Speaker 1: have a soft enough line and we don't take a
- 22:19Speaker 1: whole lot of I mean, we have some pretty low
- 22:21Speaker 1: limits and everything, but but still it's just consistent and
- 22:25Speaker 1: particularly with the over unders. I mean that that's really
- 22:27Speaker 1: where where we find ourselves in trouble. What are your
- 22:32Speaker 1: limits on w n B A like two thousand on
- 22:35Speaker 1: the size, thousands on the totals. What are your limits
- 22:38Speaker 1: on Summer League about the same two thousands on the sides,
- 22:43Speaker 1: thousands on the totals. And are you doing any uh
- 22:46Speaker 1: in game for Summer League? In game for w n
- 22:48Speaker 1: B A. Oh my god, you're killing me real, like
- 22:50Speaker 1: we don't have enough work. Seriously, listen, Scooch, the world's changing, man. Okay,
- 22:57Speaker 1: we got eleven year olds out there who are studying
- 22:59Speaker 1: bankroll management it and are like figuring out the best
- 23:02Speaker 1: way to make units on the World Cup. Okay, you
- 23:06Speaker 1: got it ready to serve an audience. Yeah, well, we're
- 23:10Speaker 1: working on automation, so that's going to have to be
- 23:13Speaker 1: something that if we can, if we can get that automated,
- 23:16Speaker 1: we'll we'll do that in game. Basically, what you're saying
- 23:20Speaker 1: is you're working on getting yourself right out of the
- 23:22Speaker 1: job automated. Yeah, that's what That's what wrote me. Robot Scooch,
- 23:32Speaker 1: Android Scooch, Robo Scooch, Oh my god. They will do
- 23:39Speaker 1: nothing but sit in your house, smoke your cigars, and
- 23:42Speaker 1: like go to the country club on the lake. That's
- 23:45Speaker 1: what it will be exactly, travel around in the Boyd
- 23:49Speaker 1: private jet to all the other places like Mississippi and
- 23:52Speaker 1: god knows where, making sure all your minions are doing
- 23:57Speaker 1: their job and working really hard. Ah well, I wish
- 24:00Speaker 1: it was always on the private plane where we a
- 24:02Speaker 1: couple a few weeks ago, we had to take a
- 24:06Speaker 1: couple of small planes to jump back and forth between
- 24:08Speaker 1: locations that were about three or four hours apart. And
- 24:11Speaker 1: I'm down there on the runway in Mississippi and it
- 24:14Speaker 1: was about a hundred degrees and we're walking to the
- 24:16Speaker 1: plane and I just see the plane in the middle
- 24:19Speaker 1: of the runway and I know it's smoking hot. So
- 24:21Speaker 1: I'm asking the pilot. I was like, how hot is
- 24:24Speaker 1: it going to be in that plane? He said, yeah,
- 24:26Speaker 1: it's it's gonna be pretty warm. And the flight we
- 24:28Speaker 1: were taking was about an hour and I said, do
- 24:32Speaker 1: you have air conditioning on that thing? He said he said, yeah,
- 24:35Speaker 1: but it's gonna take a little while to cool down.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And I said, how long is a while? He said
- 24:39Speaker 1: about forty five minutes. So I am on this stiflingly
- 24:46Speaker 1: hot plane. Uh yeah, and then you know it got
- 24:49Speaker 1: the suit and tie on and everything, so it's not
- 24:53Speaker 1: always comfortable. My man. I am so tired of you
- 24:57Speaker 1: complaining about your high class problems. Yeah. I am going
- 25:05Speaker 1: to definitely transition into one more topic, uh that I'm
- 25:09Speaker 1: also tired of, which is bookmakers just flat out taking
- 25:15Speaker 1: advantage of betters by posting season win totals on the
- 25:19Speaker 1: Wakers that are over fifty games. You should have you
- 25:23Speaker 1: posted season win totals on the Lakers yet, No, no,
- 25:27Speaker 1: you're gonna post over, aren't you. Yeah? Yeah, for sure.
- 25:30Speaker 1: You should be ashamed of yourself because why because that
- 25:37Speaker 1: is so inflated. It's disgusting inflated. Yeah, they're not going
- 25:44Speaker 1: to win fifty games. Well, you see here, the premise
- 25:47Speaker 1: of what we do is not to predict how the
- 25:50Speaker 1: outcome of the actual match. It's to predict where the
- 25:54Speaker 1: money is gonna come. So where do you think the
- 25:56Speaker 1: money's the money is going to come? On the over?
- 25:59Speaker 1: But I think you are you are taking advantage of
- 26:04Speaker 1: the public by setting it at fifty two fifty three
- 26:08Speaker 1: instead of setting it at like well, it's like me
- 26:13Speaker 1: betting the Yankees and getting even money when I should
- 26:15Speaker 1: have gotten three to one. I might have to I
- 26:18Speaker 1: might have to have Owen Norman come out then, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 1: breaking kneecaps. We we have gotten more money on the
- 26:26Speaker 1: Lakers obviously now that uh you know with Lebron, I
- 26:30Speaker 1: mean that that line we're they're down to four to one.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Now in the futures, you think that's too low or
- 26:35Speaker 1: too high. I mean I think it's I think it's
- 26:39Speaker 1: preposterously low because there's no way. I mean, look, you
- 26:44Speaker 1: can you set the line based on where the money is,
- 26:46Speaker 1: and so you've gotten a ton of money on them,
- 26:48Speaker 1: so you've had to move them down because of your liability.
- 26:50Speaker 1: But I think they're like the true number on the
- 26:53Speaker 1: Lakers are probably closer to ten to fifteen, not four
- 26:56Speaker 1: to one. But you probably moved them to six to
- 27:01Speaker 1: one when Lebron signed. We oh yeah, we moved No,
- 27:04Speaker 1: we moved him down to uh four, nine to two
- 27:07Speaker 1: when he signed, and we still got more action drove
- 27:10Speaker 1: him down to four to one. But we went from
- 27:13Speaker 1: we went down to from down to fifteen to one,
- 27:16Speaker 1: twelve to one, just on the rumors when it when
- 27:19Speaker 1: he was it was between like the Rockets and the Lakers.
- 27:22Speaker 1: So we lowered both the Rockets and the Lakers just
- 27:25Speaker 1: on the speculation that he might end up on one
- 27:27Speaker 1: of those two teams. So the value was already gone
- 27:30Speaker 1: on both those teams early on, and so we just
- 27:34Speaker 1: moved moved with the money. Since then, who do you
- 27:38Speaker 1: think has the most value right now? Um? Maybe the
- 27:46Speaker 1: I mean maybe the Sixers or the Celtics, I agree,
- 27:50Speaker 1: do you? Yeah? Yeah? Uh? Fifteen one, twelve to one? Yeah? Yeah,
- 27:58Speaker 1: I think like, look, those teams are both gonna be
- 28:01Speaker 1: really good. Uh, there's not gonna be a ton of
- 28:04Speaker 1: competition in the East. The West is going to be crazy.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I also feel like, um, the odds on Kyrie or
- 28:12Speaker 1: Joel Embiide two win NBA MVP, great, great value there.
- 28:20Speaker 1: They're probably both in the fifteen to one range, and um,
- 28:26Speaker 1: they're both gonna have dominant seasons as long as they're healthy.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Their teams are going to go deep into the playoffs,
- 28:31Speaker 1: if not the finals. Kyrie is going to have the
- 28:34Speaker 1: ball in his hands. He's gonna be pissed and he's
- 28:37Speaker 1: gonna feel like the Eastern Conference is mine. I mean,
- 28:40Speaker 1: he could he could blow up this year and do
- 28:43Speaker 1: a Russell Westbrook, like, you know, ten kind of guy
- 28:48Speaker 1: ten assists. Yeah, No, I agree to Owen Millman specially,
- 28:57Speaker 1: but pretty soon he's going to be glued to the
- 28:59Speaker 1: TV watching basketball next everything. He's gonna be like that,
- 29:04Speaker 1: I got a nickel. I got a nickel on Kyrie
- 29:08Speaker 1: over twenty five and twelve tonight. That's hilarious, except it's
- 29:15Speaker 1: gonna be an actual nickel. It's not going to be
- 29:19Speaker 1: at least you hope it will. H Yeah. I don't
- 29:24Speaker 1: know if there's anything to come back from that. No, No,
- 29:27Speaker 1: that's it. I've shut myself into a full on depression
- 29:30Speaker 1: at this point. You can't think. You're just not now,
- 29:33Speaker 1: You're just like your mind's just like spinning with you know,
- 29:35Speaker 1: the next few years, and and and his and his
- 29:38Speaker 1: betting habits. Well, I'm just so torn because it could
- 29:40Speaker 1: bring us so much closer but could also tear us apart.
- 29:45Speaker 1: You know, I just keep thinking, I love this cartoon.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I wish I knew who who did it, and I
- 29:50Speaker 1: saw it many years ago. There's a father and he's
- 29:53Speaker 1: got his hand on his son's shoulder pads. His son
- 29:55Speaker 1: is like in football pads, and he's got his helmet
- 29:59Speaker 1: in his hand and he's all dejected, and then the
- 30:01Speaker 1: caption reads from the father talking to the son. He said, son,
- 30:05Speaker 1: it's not whether you win or lose. It's important. It's
- 30:08Speaker 1: whether you cover the spread. So I always hearkened back,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I always picture that comic strip anytime. Uh yes, I think. Um,
- 30:26Speaker 1: I feel like I've pulled my kid under the mafia
- 30:32Speaker 1: and I don't know how to get him out. Yeah,
- 30:35Speaker 1: but he wanted to be there. Yeah, alright, Scooch, listen,
- 30:44Speaker 1: I gotta get Tom Tolbert on the phone. I think
- 30:48Speaker 1: we've covered it all. We've covered whether or not my
- 30:50Speaker 1: son is degenerate. We've covered um summer me. We've covered
- 30:55Speaker 1: why you can't win at the NBA from a book
- 30:59Speaker 1: making perspect of, and we've covered the Lakers, lebron and
- 31:03Speaker 1: NBA futures. That is a full podcast for your for
- 31:06Speaker 1: your homecoming. Have you become bookmaker to the world yet,
- 31:09Speaker 1: By the way, I'm working on it. I'm working on it. Well,
- 31:14Speaker 1: it's a slow it's a slow process. But you know,
- 31:17Speaker 1: either me or Robo Scoots, one of us will get it.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Between the two of you, you guys are gonna nail
- 31:21Speaker 1: it exactly all right, Scooch, Thanks Matt talk all right,
- 31:27Speaker 1: take care all right. Next up on the Buffet Podcast,
- 31:32Speaker 1: one of my favorite people, friend of the podcast, one
- 31:34Speaker 1: of my favorite guests, longtime NBA superstar, one of the
- 31:37Speaker 1: best players in the history of Arizona basketball, post of
- 31:43Speaker 1: his own afternoon radio talk show on kN BR in
- 31:47Speaker 1: San Francisco. Mr Tom Tolbert, How are you, buddy, Dad?
- 31:52Speaker 1: What's going on? You must be Uh? Did you wake
- 31:54Speaker 1: up on the hyperboleef side of the bed this morning? No? No, no,
- 31:57Speaker 1: this is how I think of you. I think of
- 31:59Speaker 1: you as uh as easily the the best recruit who
- 32:06Speaker 1: turned the University of Arizona basketball program around, and then
- 32:10Speaker 1: the guy who came in and really um was the
- 32:14Speaker 1: engine that ran the Warriors uh in the early nineties
- 32:19Speaker 1: during like the Mitch Richmond, Chris Mullen, UH Tim Hardaway
- 32:23Speaker 1: days like without you revolutionizes. I think the word you're
- 32:26Speaker 1: looking for, I don't know that. Like to me, the
- 32:29Speaker 1: offense and the defense we're both pivoting around your hard
- 32:33Speaker 1: nosed play and without yea that that erra doesn't exist. Yeah,
- 32:37Speaker 1: our offense and the other team's offense. That's how I
- 32:41Speaker 1: see it. Well, I'm glad. I'm I'm I'm glad. You
- 32:46Speaker 1: had some really really good alcohol back in the day.
- 32:49Speaker 1: How do you remember it? Not quite that? Uh? Well,
- 32:53Speaker 1: I mean, look, I'm proud of what I was able
- 32:55Speaker 1: to accomplish. I mean I think that I was I
- 32:59Speaker 1: don't want to say I was missing piece, but I
- 33:00Speaker 1: want to say I was one of the key pieces
- 33:02Speaker 1: when I came into the junior college, transferred Arizona and
- 33:04Speaker 1: helped us get to the the Final four, and I
- 33:07Speaker 1: think we're number one most of the year that year.
- 33:09Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean I think I played a pivotal role,
- 33:11Speaker 1: uh in that. And as far as ma NBA career, look,
- 33:14Speaker 1: I played seven years and I played three with the Wards,
- 33:16Speaker 1: and I bounced around a little bit. But you know,
- 33:18Speaker 1: I'm proud of that as well. You look at the
- 33:21Speaker 1: population and how many people get to play professional sports
- 33:24Speaker 1: in the world, and it's a minuscule, minuscule number. So
- 33:28Speaker 1: you know, while you know, I look at and there
- 33:30Speaker 1: was I had some games that were fun, and you
- 33:32Speaker 1: know that I look back and remember had twenty seven
- 33:34Speaker 1: against David Robinson and the Spurs and twenty four against
- 33:38Speaker 1: Elijah one of the Rockets, and some you know, I
- 33:40Speaker 1: had some games that were like, really, if I could
- 33:42Speaker 1: like to do that every game, I would have been
- 33:44Speaker 1: and then I would have been unbelievable. I couldn't do
- 33:46Speaker 1: that every game. But now to play in UH, to
- 33:49Speaker 1: play in a professional sports league, yeah, I mean it
- 33:52Speaker 1: takes a lot of work and a lot of help,
- 33:54Speaker 1: and yeah, I'm proud of that. I mean, not a
- 33:55Speaker 1: lot of people get to do it, and I get
- 33:56Speaker 1: to do it, and I get to do a sports
- 33:59Speaker 1: suck radio show based I've been stealing money for about
- 34:01Speaker 1: thirty years now. You have been stealing money and then
- 34:03Speaker 1: giving it away to bookmakers for so freaking long. It's
- 34:08Speaker 1: it's unbelievable. But you know you're right about this the
- 34:10Speaker 1: professional sports Like, um, I've had this conversation with a
- 34:14Speaker 1: lot of people, and you know, I like, I can
- 34:18Speaker 1: only put it in the context of me at the
- 34:20Speaker 1: center of the universe. So like, I played high school
- 34:22Speaker 1: basketball and then I moved to New York and I'm
- 34:25Speaker 1: playing in a basketball game with guys who played UH
- 34:29Speaker 1: in college at the D three level, the D one level.
- 34:33Speaker 1: And then a guy who used to work at ESPN
- 34:35Speaker 1: the magazine with me named Alan Grant, who played in
- 34:38Speaker 1: the NFL for five years. He went to Stanford. He
- 34:40Speaker 1: actually played for the Niners. You might remember him so
- 34:43Speaker 1: um he uh. And he would play and like the
- 34:47Speaker 1: level of difference between like you know, schmos like me
- 34:50Speaker 1: who played in high school and even a D three
- 34:53Speaker 1: player in college was ginormous, Like they were just so
- 34:57Speaker 1: much better in every single way. And the level between
- 35:00Speaker 1: the D three and the D one guy was ridiculous.
- 35:02Speaker 1: And then there was a guy like Alan Grant who's
- 35:04Speaker 1: just a phenomenal athlete and played at a professional level.
- 35:07Speaker 1: It wasn't even the sport that he played in. You
- 35:09Speaker 1: just see, like everything moves faster, everything moves more fluid,
- 35:13Speaker 1: everything is easier to get to that level. Even if
- 35:17Speaker 1: you are like end up being the scrub at that level,
- 35:19Speaker 1: you're still gonna be better than say, how many people
- 35:23Speaker 1: have played in the history of the n b A,
- 35:25Speaker 1: I don't know, five thousand idea, But you're still gonna
- 35:29Speaker 1: be better than like the people who have attempted to
- 35:33Speaker 1: play basketball in their life. And now it's incredible. And
- 35:38Speaker 1: that's why it always look I used the term as well,
- 35:41Speaker 1: like this guy sucks or what's he doing? Or this
- 35:44Speaker 1: guy doesn't you know, scrub whatever something like that. But
- 35:48Speaker 1: I always use those terms as a relative term, like
- 35:52Speaker 1: you're a scrub compared to everyone else in the league,
- 35:56Speaker 1: or you're a guy that shouldn't be on the court
- 35:58Speaker 1: compared to everyone else in the league. And I think
- 36:01Speaker 1: fans sometimes just get well so fanatical they you know,
- 36:07Speaker 1: that guy sucks, for this guy, get him out of here.
- 36:09Speaker 1: That they don't realize like how good everyone is that
- 36:13Speaker 1: plays professional sport. They don't realize how good you are.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Like the worst guy, as you said, is so much
- 36:20Speaker 1: better than just about everyone else. I won't say so
- 36:23Speaker 1: much better than everybody else. So there are guys that
- 36:25Speaker 1: like just missed the cuts somehow. Maybe they they aren't
- 36:29Speaker 1: in the right system, or they don't have the right
- 36:31Speaker 1: support staff and they don't quite make it. So, I mean,
- 36:33Speaker 1: there's there's some fringe people that are talented enough to
- 36:35Speaker 1: play in professional sports, but for the most part, people
- 36:39Speaker 1: have no idea, just don't have any idea. I always
- 36:42Speaker 1: wish that people could could stand in a batter's box
- 36:46Speaker 1: with the Roldest Chapman throwing the ball and just hold
- 36:49Speaker 1: the bat, don't even swing it, just throw it and
- 36:51Speaker 1: let him throw it. And just see how tough that
- 36:54Speaker 1: is to hit on her mom and our fastball. I
- 36:56Speaker 1: mean you can you can barely see it. Yeah, we'll
- 36:59Speaker 1: sit there and yell the guy, you know, for not
- 37:01Speaker 1: getting the guy home from third base with less than
- 37:03Speaker 1: two outs, and Chapman throws the ball right down the middle, like,
- 37:06Speaker 1: how could you not hit that? What they'll dude, it's
- 37:08Speaker 1: going on hundred miles an hour now, expectation they're different
- 37:10Speaker 1: because you're a professional athlete. But still, I mean you
- 37:14Speaker 1: watch it on TV and it all becomes so easy.
- 37:17Speaker 1: How could you not see that open guy cutting? How
- 37:19Speaker 1: could you not hit that shot? How could you not
- 37:21Speaker 1: hit that guy wide open the flat? If people don't
- 37:23Speaker 1: understand like how quick things move, and the greatest ones
- 37:26Speaker 1: that play all right, they have the ability to slow
- 37:28Speaker 1: the gauges all slows down for him because of their
- 37:31Speaker 1: work ethic and their natural ability and just their intelligence.
- 37:35Speaker 1: The game slows down. And when I had my good games,
- 37:38Speaker 1: and I had good you know, I had good stretches.
- 37:40Speaker 1: When I was playing, the game was slow. You know,
- 37:43Speaker 1: you just need to play. Was there? You knew it?
- 37:45Speaker 1: You caught the ball? Should I shoot it? Should I
- 37:47Speaker 1: pass it? If I passed it where I passed it
- 37:48Speaker 1: to should I dribble it, then pass it, then shoot it.
- 37:51Speaker 1: I mean everything just kind of like laid out before.
- 37:54Speaker 1: You're like, Okay, this is easy, and then when you're struggling,
- 37:58Speaker 1: it's like playing in a tornado though. I mean, things
- 38:00Speaker 1: are just whizz and by you, and it's like you
- 38:02Speaker 1: seem like you make the wrong decision every single time,
- 38:05Speaker 1: and you're you're questioning yourself and it's just it could
- 38:08Speaker 1: be a mess. And great players don't deal with that
- 38:11Speaker 1: very often. Put the for a lot of us out there,
- 38:13Speaker 1: they're played boy that game. When it speeds up, you
- 38:16Speaker 1: just want to hit the brakes and get off the ride.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Who is the best athlete you played with? Kenny Lofton
- 38:26Speaker 1: Kenny Lofton, best athlete I played with? It was our
- 38:28Speaker 1: point guard Arizona, the center field. Yeah, I think it
- 38:35Speaker 1: was fifteen years and then he played for the He
- 38:37Speaker 1: was here with the Giants when they I think they
- 38:39Speaker 1: went to the World Series when he was when Kenny
- 38:41Speaker 1: was here, he was who was it was here? Uh yeah,
- 38:44Speaker 1: just a phenomenal athlete. Mrs. The guy that did. They
- 38:47Speaker 1: didn't play baseball all in college until at the very
- 38:50Speaker 1: end of his career. Then showed up, played and got
- 38:52Speaker 1: drafted and made it to the major league. And it
- 38:54Speaker 1: was like Chris, like, baseball is not that easy, none
- 38:57Speaker 1: of it is. But she's that did not swing a
- 38:59Speaker 1: bat and do all of that. But like in the NBA,
- 39:02Speaker 1: they're a great athlete. Shack was an incredible athlete for
- 39:06Speaker 1: a guy his size. People forget I played with Miss
- 39:09Speaker 1: Rocky Yere in Orlando. He was like seven one, Like
- 39:12Speaker 1: he was long. He wasn't just big, he was long, agad.
- 39:15Speaker 1: The things that he could do in the power uh
- 39:18Speaker 1: and the agility was just mind bending. It's like, there's
- 39:22Speaker 1: no way guy that big should be able to do
- 39:25Speaker 1: with what this guy is doing. But you know Lebron,
- 39:28Speaker 1: I've never played against Lebron. They're just watching him. It's
- 39:30Speaker 1: like incredible watching this guy do what do what he does.
- 39:34Speaker 1: So I mean, yeah, I mean the NBA man, I
- 39:36Speaker 1: could just go and go right down to you know,
- 39:38Speaker 1: the Mitch Richmond, great athlete. Obviously I played against Jordan's
- 39:41Speaker 1: great athlete. But NBA guys are InCred I think. I
- 39:44Speaker 1: mean a lot of guys will say it in their
- 39:46Speaker 1: chosen sport. These guys are the best athletes in the world.
- 39:49Speaker 1: But boy, I don't see how you couldn't say NBA
- 39:51Speaker 1: athletes are just the best athletes in the world. The
- 39:53Speaker 1: most of her six seven six can run like the wind,
- 39:57Speaker 1: can jump or super quick hand eye coordination, and I mean, yeah,
- 40:00Speaker 1: it's it's pretty incredible what some of those guys can
- 40:03Speaker 1: do well. I always remember this story, like, sometimes the
- 40:05Speaker 1: best athlete isn't the guy who's playing the most right.
- 40:07Speaker 1: And so the story I heard about, I forget what
- 40:11Speaker 1: it was from, but Chris Webber and Juwan Howard were
- 40:14Speaker 1: playing on the Wizards or Bullets at the time with
- 40:18Speaker 1: Calbert Cheney. You know, I went to I you and
- 40:21Speaker 1: like the Fab five and I you had that rivalry
- 40:23Speaker 1: when I was there in the early nineties, and um,
- 40:27Speaker 1: Calbert Cheney obviously was an All American and so they
- 40:29Speaker 1: all were playing together at that point. Cal was playing
- 40:31Speaker 1: a little bit less than everybody else. And I heard
- 40:35Speaker 1: through like people I'm connected to in sports and whatever,
- 40:37Speaker 1: that Juwan Howard and Chris Pruppert will talk about how
- 40:40Speaker 1: Calbert Cheney was the greatest athlete they've ever seen and
- 40:43Speaker 1: he was barely getting on the floor. But like the
- 40:46Speaker 1: things he could do with the ball in practice, and like,
- 40:48Speaker 1: you know, for whatever reason, he wasn't playing as much.
- 40:51Speaker 1: But like, were there guys and the Warriors who were
- 40:53Speaker 1: just ridiculously good athletes, better than Mitch Richmond, better than
- 40:56Speaker 1: Tim hardaway Um who just never got planned time. But
- 40:58Speaker 1: we're so good athletes. Man, I'm trying to think of
- 41:02Speaker 1: somebody I know, Timmy Hardaware, our point guard back with
- 41:05Speaker 1: the words I used to say about those people, like
- 41:09Speaker 1: the guys that could really jump and they're explosive, he goes,
- 41:13Speaker 1: he goes, they could get up, but they can't get down. Well,
- 41:17Speaker 1: you know what, that's interesting. The things that I want
- 41:21Speaker 1: to talk about there are two very specifics I want
- 41:23Speaker 1: to talk about, and we talked a little bit about
- 41:25Speaker 1: I talked about this with Scooch, the bookmaker in the
- 41:27Speaker 1: first part of the podcast, and you and I talked
- 41:29Speaker 1: a little bit about this before we came on. Is
- 41:31Speaker 1: Summer League, and Summer League has taken over the sports
- 41:35Speaker 1: conversation outside of the World Cup. And you know, the
- 41:38Speaker 1: NBA has just done a phenomenal job of like there's
- 41:40Speaker 1: the draft, then there's free agency, and its Summer League
- 41:43Speaker 1: and like all of that sort of comes together to
- 41:46Speaker 1: keep the promise of what the next season in the
- 41:48Speaker 1: NBA is going to be alive, and he gets people
- 41:51Speaker 1: really excited to see sort of how Trey Young is
- 41:53Speaker 1: gonna do, how Marvin Bagley is gonna do. You know
- 41:55Speaker 1: what these what these new players are going to be
- 41:57Speaker 1: on their teams, and people get excited about these glorified
- 41:59Speaker 1: scrimmage it and you can bet on it now and
- 42:03Speaker 1: like to see some of these guys develop the idea
- 42:06Speaker 1: that they can get up and they can't get down.
- 42:09Speaker 1: What's your take on summer league? What's your take on
- 42:11Speaker 1: summer league as a development tool? And then what's your
- 42:14Speaker 1: take on Summer league or something a bet on? Well, Look,
- 42:17Speaker 1: I played in two summer leagues when I was with
- 42:21Speaker 1: the Warriors or was it one? Not one? Am I
- 42:23Speaker 1: supposed to play another one? I got hurt, but we
- 42:24Speaker 1: played in the Utah I think it's called the Salt
- 42:27Speaker 1: Lake City Review, and it's put it this way. There
- 42:30Speaker 1: wasn't nearly as many people there is there is in
- 42:32Speaker 1: Vegas right now, And it wasn't something that other NBA
- 42:36Speaker 1: guys came and hung out and watched. They weren't city
- 42:39Speaker 1: your teammates weren't sitting on the sidelines in Salt Lake
- 42:42Speaker 1: getting ready to watch you play a summer league game.
- 42:44Speaker 1: You went out there because you wanted to get better.
- 42:46Speaker 1: You went out there because your coach asked you to. Uh.
- 42:50Speaker 1: So I went out there and actually, uh pop uh.
- 42:53Speaker 1: Coach Popovich was my coach out in the summer League,
- 42:55Speaker 1: which was pretty cool. I wish I would have had
- 42:58Speaker 1: a chance to play for him more in just a
- 43:00Speaker 1: summer league, but it was pretty cool playing for him
- 43:02Speaker 1: in Summer League. Patrols Freewell was on the team. I
- 43:05Speaker 1: think he was a rookie that year. But it was
- 43:07Speaker 1: just something you did. I mean, it wasn't something like like, oh,
- 43:10Speaker 1: I can't wait to go to Salt Lake. Now it's
- 43:12Speaker 1: in Vegas, and Vegas is a different animal than in
- 43:15Speaker 1: Salt Lake. But look, I think people are on crack.
- 43:17Speaker 1: I really do. I think there's a crack epidemic in
- 43:21Speaker 1: Vegas and people are smoking at all and going to
- 43:24Speaker 1: summer league games and paying paying from what I hear,
- 43:28Speaker 1: to go to a summer league game, and those things
- 43:31Speaker 1: are full. It's summer league. They couldn't pick those dudes
- 43:36Speaker 1: out of a lineup. They could there in their backyard.
- 43:38Speaker 1: They couldn't say, hey, that's the power forward for the Celtics.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Couldn't do it. They don't no idea who these guys are.
- 43:44Speaker 1: They know who Trade Young is and who Bagley is,
- 43:46Speaker 1: they know who the top picks are for It's like
- 43:48Speaker 1: ten guys on each roster. You have no idea who
- 43:51Speaker 1: these guys are. Yet they're in and they're in Vegas.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Let me repeat, they're in Vegas, all right. If you
- 43:58Speaker 1: were like in South Dakota somewhere and it was like,
- 44:00Speaker 1: what are we gonna do? I don't know when you
- 44:02Speaker 1: watch the bulls run around, or we're gonna watch the
- 44:04Speaker 1: Summer League game. Okay, I'll go watch the Summer League game.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I'm in Vegas. I got a casino, I have a pool,
- 44:13Speaker 1: I have golf, I have all sorts of stuff going on.
- 44:17Speaker 1: And yet I'm gonna go inside a gym and watch
- 44:20Speaker 1: guys that I have no idea who they are, sweat
- 44:23Speaker 1: running up and down a court. Absolutely not, under no circumstances.
- 44:28Speaker 1: When I when I used to broadcast for the Words,
- 44:30Speaker 1: they're like, hey, you want to go to Summer League
- 44:31Speaker 1: and do some shows from there, I'm like, you high
- 44:34Speaker 1: you want me to go to Summer League. I know
- 44:36Speaker 1: I'm not going to Summer League. It's so it's summer League.
- 44:40Speaker 1: It's the fact that it's this big deal now is
- 44:43Speaker 1: just mind boggling. And the fact that people are betting
- 44:47Speaker 1: on this stuff is mind boggling, because like I'm I'll
- 44:51Speaker 1: bet on just about anything, but I gotta know what's
- 44:53Speaker 1: going on. But I mean, I'm not gonna sit here
- 44:55Speaker 1: to know what's going on. I have to watch Summer League.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Not a chance in hell I'm watching some league. There's
- 45:00Speaker 1: not a chance in hell I'm betting Summer League. And
- 45:03Speaker 1: how in the hell do you bet this stuff? Anyway?
- 45:05Speaker 1: Like I get other things, how you bet them? I
- 45:08Speaker 1: know there's trends that go along with it, but yeah,
- 45:11Speaker 1: betting has them been there, but around that long on
- 45:12Speaker 1: Summer League for me to take those seriously because I'm
- 45:15Speaker 1: the mostly trends are what has happened. It doesn't pretend
- 45:18Speaker 1: what's going to happen. It can help you, but if
- 45:20Speaker 1: you just use that as a tool, I mean you're sunk.
- 45:24Speaker 1: So I have no interest in betting on the Magic
- 45:27Speaker 1: plus two over the Celtics in the Summer League game.
- 45:30Speaker 1: When some dudes name I can't even pronounce. This is
- 45:33Speaker 1: a jumper at the end of the game and cost
- 45:35Speaker 1: me a couple hundred bucks. No thanks, I'll take my
- 45:37Speaker 1: two and go to the blackjack table once again. I'm
- 45:40Speaker 1: in Vegas. This is a great Summer League grant. You've
- 45:44Speaker 1: like poured such cold water on the concept of like
- 45:49Speaker 1: everybody in the world being so excited about Summer League
- 45:52Speaker 1: and the fact you can help bet on Summer League,
- 45:54Speaker 1: and that we at the Action Network are writing dozens
- 45:57Speaker 1: of stories about betting trends a year on Crack two.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Y're on Crack two and hoever it writes those articles
- 46:05Speaker 1: on Crack Why why is it different than the w
- 46:11Speaker 1: n B A. I've been on your show, We've talked
- 46:12Speaker 1: about like betting on the w n B A. Why
- 46:15Speaker 1: is it any different. You're not doing any more research
- 46:17Speaker 1: when you're betting on the w n B A than
- 46:19Speaker 1: you're doing it on Summer League, and chances are you've
- 46:22Speaker 1: probably watched more of the players in Summer League throughout
- 46:24Speaker 1: their career than you have anybody playing in the w
- 46:26Speaker 1: n B A. Well, no, no, no, I say, I
- 46:28Speaker 1: don't think that's true. I think with the w n
- 46:30Speaker 1: B A you have women that have been on the
- 46:32Speaker 1: same team for a number of years, you have you
- 46:36Speaker 1: can have team trends throughout the course of a season.
- 46:39Speaker 1: The season is longer, it's not this summer league. I mean.
- 46:43Speaker 1: And then let's put it this way. I mean, who
- 46:44Speaker 1: knows what these guys are doing the night before a
- 46:46Speaker 1: summer League game? Like, really, I'm gonna put my hard
- 46:49Speaker 1: earn money on some guy who may have been out
- 46:51Speaker 1: in the casino till at three o'clock in the morning
- 46:54Speaker 1: drinking vodka rocks. I mean, I'm a bet on that dude,
- 46:58Speaker 1: and it come out there sweating bullets hung first, Like, no,
- 47:00Speaker 1: I don't think so so. But with the w n
- 47:02Speaker 1: b A, I think it's more. I mean, look, it's
- 47:05Speaker 1: a league. It's been around, these girls, the women have
- 47:09Speaker 1: been around from year to year. You can say, Okay,
- 47:11Speaker 1: this is what they did last year, this is what
- 47:12Speaker 1: they've added, And I mean, I think you can make
- 47:15Speaker 1: a reasonable assumption as to how they're going to play.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Do they play fast, do they play so slow as
- 47:20Speaker 1: their coach the same, did they change coaches. There's all
- 47:23Speaker 1: sorts of different things you can look at. With summer League,
- 47:26Speaker 1: it's a bunch of dudes thrown together. I won't say
- 47:30Speaker 1: random Lakers teams. You know, they choose who they want
- 47:32Speaker 1: on their Summer League team, But the next year it's
- 47:34Speaker 1: a completely different batch guys. And you don't know what
- 47:37Speaker 1: guys are out there for. I mean, some guys may
- 47:39Speaker 1: be out there just to ball out and get the
- 47:42Speaker 1: points because they don't have a contract and they want
- 47:44Speaker 1: to impress someone. Some guys already have contracts with that team,
- 47:48Speaker 1: so they're gonna listen to the coach play with instructor
- 47:50Speaker 1: maybe a little bit more run some plays. So I
- 47:52Speaker 1: don't know what's going on with those guys, and they're
- 47:55Speaker 1: only there for a couple of weeks. So I just
- 47:56Speaker 1: say that that I have no interest in whatsoever. Some
- 48:01Speaker 1: guys want to get up, and some guys are trying
- 48:02Speaker 1: to prove they can get down, and some guys want
- 48:06Speaker 1: to bet on summer League. Some guys just want to
- 48:09Speaker 1: bet on the guys trying to prove they can get Downey,
- 48:13Speaker 1: good luck. Do you even see summer league? Like, you know,
- 48:17Speaker 1: speaking of is like a good way to see player potential.
- 48:21Speaker 1: People are freaking out, Like the first three games, Trey
- 48:23Speaker 1: Young was horrible and there were stories about it. I'm like,
- 48:28Speaker 1: this is the stupidest fucking thing I've ever seen. Like,
- 48:30Speaker 1: you guys played three games of exhibition. Everybody calmed down.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Everyone take a deep breath. It's not a precursor to
- 48:38Speaker 1: what's to what's to come. It's not they're not playing
- 48:41Speaker 1: with NBA. All those guys are not NBA caliber players,
- 48:45Speaker 1: So you're gonna play better when you're playing with NBA
- 48:48Speaker 1: caliber players. And I just again, you don't know what
- 48:51Speaker 1: the coach wants from a guy. You don't know what
- 48:53Speaker 1: you ask them to do. Some guys made you feel
- 48:55Speaker 1: a little bit more pressure because they're drafted high and
- 48:57Speaker 1: they feel like they have to go to Vegas and
- 48:59Speaker 1: and and get after it. And I look in I
- 49:02Speaker 1: pay zero attention to that stuff. Even if I watched
- 49:06Speaker 1: those games, which I mean, really, you would have to
- 49:11Speaker 1: freaking duct tape me to my couch, hide my remote,
- 49:14Speaker 1: and put toothpicks in my eyelids to get me to
- 49:17Speaker 1: watch Summer League basketball. But if you did that and
- 49:20Speaker 1: I was watching Summer League basketball, I still would come
- 49:24Speaker 1: away thinking I don't care. I don't care what those
- 49:26Speaker 1: guys did. And then I try to like, look at
- 49:28Speaker 1: somebody go like his athleticism, or I like that guy's
- 49:30Speaker 1: stroke whether he makes it or not, I have no idea,
- 49:33Speaker 1: Or I like his defensive anticipation. Uh, stuff like that.
- 49:37Speaker 1: But I'm not gonna draw any sweeping conclusions about a
- 49:39Speaker 1: player after two or three or four Summer League games,
- 49:42Speaker 1: or even the whole Summer League. It's just it's absurd.
- 49:45Speaker 1: But we know how the machine works. I mean, you
- 49:47Speaker 1: gotta have pages, you gotta have clicks, and you want
- 49:49Speaker 1: people to to click on an article Trey Young really
- 49:52Speaker 1: stinks and this is and you're like, well I gotta
- 49:54Speaker 1: find out why, let me click on. And you're like,
- 49:55Speaker 1: well that was stupidly move on. Uh. So that's just
- 49:58Speaker 1: that's that's where the world works. I think people, I
- 50:02Speaker 1: think they get it. I'm not sure, but anybody that
- 50:05Speaker 1: would take an article proclaiming someone a bust after a
- 50:09Speaker 1: week of Summer League is just a year on crack two.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Don't listen. Don't pull back the curtain on my business,
- 50:16Speaker 1: because then I got nothing left. You know what I'm saying.
- 50:21Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. I always here for you.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Tom Tolber bringing the Action Network down one word at
- 50:27Speaker 1: a time. Here's another question. That I love your World
- 50:33Speaker 1: Cup betting previews. Those they're fine. Yeah, exactly. Here's the
- 50:36Speaker 1: thing us I talked about with Scooch. You are a father,
- 50:39Speaker 1: you have grown children, you are a fan of sports,
- 50:42Speaker 1: and you have been better for a long time. During
- 50:44Speaker 1: the World Cup, my eleven year old son and I
- 50:47Speaker 1: had been bonding over this and uh, the other day
- 50:51Speaker 1: we were gonna We're talking about France and Belgium, and
- 50:54Speaker 1: I said to him, uh, you want to bet on it?
- 50:57Speaker 1: And he goes sure. I'm like, alright, how much? She goes,
- 50:59Speaker 1: I know, fifty bucks. I'm like all right. So I
- 51:02Speaker 1: log into my you know, sports betting app, and I
- 51:05Speaker 1: put down fifty bucks on the game. And the next
- 51:07Speaker 1: day'm at work and he's at home and we're texting
- 51:09Speaker 1: during the game and we're watching and we're excited. And
- 51:11Speaker 1: when it's over, I sent him a text like who
- 51:13Speaker 1: we win? Fantastic And all he does is text me
- 51:17Speaker 1: back and say, we won fifty bucks. And so the
- 51:23Speaker 1: next day this morning, and I tweeted this as well. Um,
- 51:26Speaker 1: I'm talking to him on the phone and I'm like, hey,
- 51:28Speaker 1: England Croatia today, what do you think? And he goes, well,
- 51:32Speaker 1: I kind of like England. But Croatia beat the rigged
- 51:34Speaker 1: Russians and so that scares me. I'm like, do you
- 51:37Speaker 1: want to bet it? And he goes, well, let's bet
- 51:41Speaker 1: less today. I'm like, the guy's a bank roll savant.
- 51:44Speaker 1: He know, he knows like instinctively what to do. Here?
- 51:48Speaker 1: Am I corrupting my kid? Have I sent him down
- 51:51Speaker 1: the path of destruction and no return? You are such
- 51:56Speaker 1: a loser, you really are. He's freaking eleven. Did your
- 52:02Speaker 1: wife know this? I'm not sure. Fortunately, thinks like Twitter
- 52:09Speaker 1: and Instagram are the stupidest things in the world. She's
- 52:14Speaker 1: right by the way she feels about Twitter Instagram that
- 52:17Speaker 1: you do about Summer League. Yeah, there would anyone do
- 52:20Speaker 1: these things? All right? Two things here? One, Uh, that's
- 52:26Speaker 1: a sore subject with me. Because I had Belgium that
- 52:29Speaker 1: wasn't happy with the outcome. Not only did I have Belgium,
- 52:32Speaker 1: I had Belgium winning the World Cup. That was my
- 52:35Speaker 1: future is bet so it was not stupor pumped. I Uh,
- 52:39Speaker 1: I took bellet so Belgium got me through just a
- 52:42Speaker 1: digressive minute. Belgium got me through the World Cup. Because
- 52:44Speaker 1: I didn't feel like bet a whole bunch of individual
- 52:46Speaker 1: games and stuff and doing research and trying to figure
- 52:48Speaker 1: all this stuff out. Basically, I just asked my son,
- 52:50Speaker 1: because my son Walkers and won the follows the Premier League.
- 52:54Speaker 1: So I said, okay, I'm going with Belgium because I
- 52:56Speaker 1: can pick two players out of the lineup. I knew
- 52:58Speaker 1: who Locaco and the Brunner, and I liked their beer,
- 53:02Speaker 1: so I go, good Belgium beer, two players, Let's go
- 53:04Speaker 1: with Belgium. So I took Belgium to win the group,
- 53:08Speaker 1: which they did even though they were trying not to,
- 53:11Speaker 1: and now I wish they wouldn't have. I took them
- 53:14Speaker 1: to get to the quarterfinals, which they did, and then
- 53:16Speaker 1: I took them to get to the finals and win it.
- 53:18Speaker 1: So I ended up breaking even. So I won my
- 53:20Speaker 1: first two even though I'd laid juice, and then the
- 53:23Speaker 1: next two I had to get to the finals at
- 53:25Speaker 1: four to one. So I had him a plus four
- 53:27Speaker 1: hundred against France. I was feeling pretty good until they lost,
- 53:30Speaker 1: and then I wasn't feeling good and then I had
- 53:32Speaker 1: him at like nine to one to win the uh Attorney.
- 53:36Speaker 1: So yeah, that I wasn't super fumped about that. But
- 53:40Speaker 1: as far as do you and your son. Wait, he
- 53:42Speaker 1: did the worst thing that could have happened to him.
- 53:45Speaker 1: The worst thing was at France one. The best thing
- 53:48Speaker 1: would have been in Belgium. Would have won like five
- 53:50Speaker 1: nothing and he would have been crossed and you would
- 53:52Speaker 1: have lost fifty bucks and would have been over any good.
- 53:54Speaker 1: But well this sucks. Then you would have said, see, son,
- 53:57Speaker 1: look at how how many hours did it take you
- 53:58Speaker 1: to earn those fifty dollars that you just blew? Do
- 54:01Speaker 1: you want to do that again? It would have been
- 54:03Speaker 1: over for him. Now if you can build a career
- 54:05Speaker 1: on it like you, fantastic. We talked about how many
- 54:08Speaker 1: players make the NBA professionals for it's not many. How
- 54:11Speaker 1: many players make money wagering even less a lot less,
- 54:14Speaker 1: I would assume. So him winning his first bet is
- 54:18Speaker 1: not ideal. Trust me on that one, and know what
- 54:20Speaker 1: I can advocate for my son to gamble? Absolutely not
- 54:24Speaker 1: all right? So to be clear, Um, I'm a loser
- 54:27Speaker 1: who has sent my path down my son down a
- 54:30Speaker 1: path for complete destruction. And I should not be doing
- 54:33Speaker 1: clickbait stories about the Summer League, and I might be
- 54:36Speaker 1: in the wrong business entirely. I think this is where Yeah,
- 54:40Speaker 1: I mean I I think that, I think that in complate.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Thanks pretty well, October. You continue to be with my
- 54:48Speaker 1: favorite guests. Please get back. Thanks for having me, Jeff
- 54:56Speaker 1: all right, I'll talk to you a joy m hmmmmmmmm
