- 0:07On October 7th, 1967, the Boston Red Sox faced the St. Louis Cardinals at Bush Stadium for Game 3 of the 1967 World Series.
- 0:16The best of seven series was tied at one game apiece, and this is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 3 featuring announcers Pee-wee Reese and Ken Coleman.
- 0:25He broadcast 14 years for the Cleveland Browns, and he also broadcast 10 years for the Cleveland Indians baseball team.
- 0:33The last two years, he's been with the Boston Red Sox, and he's been the boy for the Red Sox.
- 0:38Kenny, it's a pleasure to work with you. Come on in here and do the kick.
- 0:42Okay, Pee-wee, thank you very much.
- 0:44The guy on the right now is taking his warm-up throws and ready to lead off for the Red Sox, a young fellow that the ball player sometimes refers to as Happy Jose.
- 0:55That's Jose Sada-ball, who has a wonderful disposition, a sweet little guy who can really run the bases and very often will punt his way on.
- 1:07He has hit only two home runs during his American League career, which includes 463 games prior to this season.
- 1:17He's been swinging the ball well lately, though, and has done a good job in right field.
- 1:21Of course, the Red Sox miss very much Tony Canigliaro, who was here with them, but who is not eligible to play in the series after having sustained an injury about six weeks ago.
- 1:35The story on Brials, the St. Louis pitcher, probably the most interesting story on him is what he has done over the last couple of months.
- 1:46He has won nine straight ball games, pitching tremendous baseball.
- 1:51Tarnable steps in, Mike Shannon, the third baseman, up the line.
- 1:55The outfield playing a step toward left, although Tarnable is a left-handed batter.
- 2:01Brials gets his sign from MacArthur and delivers. Ground ball out the second off to the right of Seth Javier, close the first-in time.
- 2:08Tarnable hits the first-fifth through the second baseman, and there's one out in the top of the first inning.
- 2:14Javier came up with a tremendous fielding play in game two against Elston Howard, one of the best defensive plays of the series.
- 2:23Dalton Jones at the plate from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He made 15 hits in his last 30 private sats in the last two weeks of the season.
- 2:34Left-handed hitter takes the fastball low and inside, ball one.
- 2:39On the year, Dalton batted 289. He had three homers, 25 runs batted in. In the series, he is 3-4-9.
- 2:48Elston Brials throws, the pitch is bowled back, and the count is even at one ball and one strike.
- 2:55Brials was 7-3 at home and 7-2 on the road.
- 3:04The outfield playing straightaway for Jones.
- 3:10Right-hander, work, the pitch is one-hundred-miss, going for low-breaking stuff on the inside, one ball and two strikes.
- 3:17Bobby Doerr, one of the all-time great second baseman of the Red Sox, coaching at first base.
- 3:22Eddie Papauci, who has been with the Red Sox organization 30 years, coaching at third.
- 3:28Curveball is one-on-a-miss for Pike Green.
- 3:32Dalton Jones strikes out as Brials gets him with a good high curveball, two out of the box and first.
- 3:39There's the curveball I was talking about, Penny.
- 3:42Both Nelson Brials and Jerry Bell has a real good overhand curveball, and that's a tough pitch for a left-hander to hit.
- 3:49Let's see if Carl Yatsenka gets any of those.
- 3:53Carl is 3-4-8 in the World Series, two of the hits being home runs.
- 3:58They play him deep and toward right.
- 4:01The pitch hits him.
- 4:04It appeared to hit him on the left leg, and he is going down to first base.
- 4:10He tried to pull back out of the way, and he was hit by Brials' pitch.
- 4:15So Yatsenka becomes the first baseman of the game.
- 4:19The field is bathed in sunshine with the exception of right field where Roger Maris is in the shadows.
- 4:26With Yatsenka on first now, George Scott comes up.
- 4:30Scott batted a solid 3-0-3 on the year.
- 4:33Now Dick Williams, the Red Sox manager, has come out and is talking with the plate umpire Frank Humon.
- 4:40A discussion down on the third base side.
- 4:45Can I believe, if you remember yesterday or the day before yesterday,
- 4:49the first pick for Jim Lombard, who moved rocks, was kind of high and inside,
- 4:57and Jim Lombard was accused by a few of the Cardinal players that he was dusting them off.
- 5:02He came a little bit too close.
- 5:04Well, you notice Nelson Brials did not father the first two batters,
- 5:08but when the big one, Carl Gershwin, he came up there, he took him down pretty good.
- 5:14So now then, the umpire behind home plate, he is called, Dick Williams,
- 5:20the manager of the Red Sox out, and Red Chan and Deeds manage the Cardinals,
- 5:25and they try to tell him, let's not have any of this today.
- 5:28And Red Chan, Deeds, and Barber say, well, look at here, why didn't you say something up in Boston?
- 5:34But that's exactly what they're arguing about, the knockdown pick of Nelson Brials to Carl Gershwin.
- 5:42Okay, and now the two managers go back into their respective dugouts,
- 5:46and George Scott, big strong right-handed batter steps in.
- 5:50George in the World Series, three for seven.
- 5:54Gershwin gets first, two men out.
- 5:56In the first inning, there is no score.
- 5:58The outfield is deep and straight away.
- 6:00Scott has good power to all fields, while Texan throws.
- 6:04Pitch is low and away, gets away from the catcher, throw down a second base, out at second.
- 6:10And George Scott taking the throw as McIver launched the ball momentarily.
- 6:16You trust he took off for a second, but McIver threw it down to Maxfield and they get him.
- 6:21And so after a half inning, the score is the Red Sox nothing and the Cardinals coming to back.
- 6:29Okay, see, we, Elston Howard has just thrown the ball down to second base,
- 6:34as Bell concludes his warm-up throws,
- 6:37and now the 30-year-old right-hander is getting set to pitch to Lou Brock,
- 6:42who had a tremendous year with the St. Louis Cardinals, batting 299, had 21 homers, and 76 runs batted in.
- 6:50And in the series is 4 for 8. He had four hits in game one.
- 6:56In game two, of course, the Cardinals had just one hit.
- 7:00Bell looks into Howard for the time.
- 7:02The outfield, toward right, pitches a breaking ball in for a strike called.
- 7:07On deck is Kurt Klotz, batting third will be Roger Maris.
- 7:11Bell is 6'1", 203 pounds, out of San Antonio, Texas.
- 7:19Right-hander rocks and fires.
- 7:21There's a fly ball toward left center.
- 7:23Yatshvarsky going hard.
- 7:24Hits pass him in the gap.
- 7:26Brock around first, against the second.
- 7:28He might get free around second base.
- 7:30Petropelli with a relay.
- 7:31Throw to third base.
- 7:32And a face of the shuttle.
- 7:51Lou Brock has bled off for the St. Louis Cardinals by driving one into the gap in left center field.
- 7:58Right-handed batter joined the opposite way and whacking went through to the wall and winding up at third base.
- 8:05Nobody out in the last half of the first inning and the batter is Kurt Klotz.
- 8:10Right-handed hitting center fielder with an average on the year of 335, 1 for 8 in the World Series.
- 8:16The infield at this stage is back.
- 8:19A barrel fires and the back volley high, ball one.
- 8:29Brock gets 12 triples during the season.
- 8:32Pinson led the National League, Beta Pinson, with 13.
- 8:38That's the fifth hit for Lou in the World Series.
- 8:42Pitch, line drive, base hit into left center field and the first run is home.
- 8:46Pinson singles for Klotz and Brock scores the Cardinals jump run shot quickly, one to nothing.
- 8:53Redd B. Smith flying the ball into second base and very quickly the Cardinals lead.
- 8:59Kurt Klotz is on first base.
- 9:01Nobody out in the last of the firsts and the batter is Roger Maris.
- 9:07Maris on the season, batter 261, had nine home runs, 55 runs added in.
- 9:15In the World Series he has won for seven, but he drove in both runs for the Cardinals in the first game on infield out.
- 9:24As Brock scored both of them, so Brock now has scored all three runs the Cardinals have in the 67 World Series.
- 9:34Klotz got a good lead.
- 9:36Bell checks and throws, planted back to the mound, throws out to second for one, back to first for a double play.
- 9:43Gary Bell wasted no time as he turned and threw to Petrocelli covering a second base and Maris has hit into a 1-6-3 double play.
- 9:53And there are two men out in the last half of the first inning.
- 9:56St. Louis ahead, one nothing and the applause is for Orlando's Capeta.
- 10:02The Brigadier's Cardinals first baseman battered 325, had 25 home runs and 111 runs added in this season for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 10:14Capeta has had to fight a late season slump and he's old for seven in the series.
- 10:20Gary Bell throws a fastball down low.
- 10:24Center fielder Reggie Smith playing Capeta a step toward right.
- 10:32Yosemite straight away and deep out in left field.
- 10:38Bell into the windup, right-hander throws, breaking ball inside, two balls, no strikes on Orlando.
- 10:45Cardinals lead one nothing last half of the first inning on what has turned out to be a beautiful day in St. Louis.
- 10:53This is the second World Series for Capeta.
- 10:57There is action now in the Boston bullpen.
- 11:01Gary Wasgluci is warming up.
- 11:04The pitch is outside 3-0.
- 11:09From our vantage point we cannot see the action in the bullpen, but fortunately we're able to communicate and find out.
- 11:17And Wasgluci, who is up part of the year with a red start, the tall, rangey right-hander is loosening up.
- 11:24Three balls, no strikes, we count, two outs, nobody on.
- 11:28Bell throws to pay to take the call, strike and it's three and one.
- 11:33Elston Howard working back of the plate, started at first, a dare at second, Ketracelli at short and Jones at third.
- 11:40Yosemite in left field, Smith in center and Tartabull in right.
- 11:45Zippler coaching at first base and Joe Schultz at third for St. Louis.
- 11:50Here's the three-one pitch to Capeta.
- 11:53It's a high pop-up, back of third, Ketracelli and Jones drifting over to foul territory.
- 11:58Jones makes the catch and the Cardinals are out in the first inning.
- 12:02But they pick up a run and so at the end of one the score in St. Louis won and Boston nothing.
- 12:11They tried to reach second base after McCarver dropped the ball but Tim threw him out.
- 12:16So here's George back up there again.
- 12:19Nelson Brials throws, down ball, hits the pitcher, goes off to it second, Javier gets it, first to first, and gets it.
- 12:26A brilliant play by Julian Javier on a ball that was deflected back off Nelson Brials,
- 12:33went out to the second base when he had to come in and barehand it and threw on to Capeta for the outs.
- 12:39It will go one to four to three.
- 12:42Another fine play, the second in the series, reeled off by the Cardinals' second baseman, Julian Javier.
- 12:49Now Nick Williams, the Red Sox manager, is out protesting the call to the first base umpire, Augie Donatelli.
- 12:59It was a close play at first base.
- 13:06One out and nobody on in the second. St. Louis leads one to nothing.
- 13:11Williams walking back over to the Red Sox dugout, which is on the third base side in St. Louis, as Reggie Smith prepares the back.
- 13:21On the season, Smith, who's the quick hitter, batted 249, had 15 almost and 62 runs batted in.
- 13:28He's one for six in the World Series.
- 13:33McCarver working back at the plate, Capeta at first, Javier at second, Max Villachort, and Shannon at third for St. Louis.
- 13:41Here's the pitch. Low and inside gets past McCarver.
- 13:46Ball one.
- 13:48Brock is in left, Flutt is in center, and Maris in right.
- 13:52McCarver now goes to the mound, wants to talk with Nelson Brials.
- 13:57The official scorers for the World Series, Bob Abbey at the Washington Post,
- 14:02Larry Claflin of the Boston Record American, and Neil Russo of the St. Louis Post dispatch.
- 14:11The lights are on here in St. Louis, although the sun is shining.
- 14:18Here's the pitch.
- 14:19Smith gets one deep but foul toward right field, putting one out to the upper deck area, as Reggie really came around on the pitch by Nelson Brials.
- 14:31The umpires again, Frank Umont back at the plate,
- 14:35Arki Donatelli of the National League at first, Ed Runge of the American League at second, and Paul Pryor of the National League at third.
- 14:42Pitch is a ball to Smith, low and inside.
- 14:45Down in the left field corner is John Stevens of the American League, and in right, Al Pollock, the senior umpire in all baseball of the National League.
- 14:55Two balls, one strike, one out, nobody on second inning, one nothing, St. Louis, the pitch low and inside, three and one.
- 15:06Nelson Brials was born in Doros, California.
- 15:09He lives in Carmichael, California now.
- 15:13He has the best earned run average on the St. Louis staff this year, 2.44.
- 15:23Three balls, one strike, the pitch.
- 15:26Strike called on the inside corner at the belt, full count.
- 15:32Brials worked 155 in the third inning, so he failed to reach the minimum 162 required to qualify for the earned run ratings.
- 15:46Stocky right-hander takes a deep breath out on the mound, gets his sign and throws.
- 15:50There's our little blooper that is grabbed by Shannon.
- 15:54The third baseman, Mike Shannon, leaping to his left, came down with a little blooper off the bat of Reggie Smith, a very fine defensive play by the Cardinal third baseman.
- 16:05In Axl, the shortstop was also going over toward the hole on the play, trying to back Mike up, but he leaped high in the air and brought it down.
- 16:15So there are two men out, nobody on in the second, as Jerry Adair steps in.
- 16:20He's had a 266 on the year, 2 for 8 in the World Series.
- 16:26Right-handed batter takes the ball that goes in the dirt and goes past McIver.
- 16:31Ball one.
- 16:35Frank Humont, dusting off home plate.
- 16:39Adair, an Oklahoman, did an outstanding job with Boston after coming over from the White Sox this year.
- 16:47His average for the season, as I mentioned, was 266, but for the Red Sox, in 89 games, he hit 292.
- 16:55Here's the pitch, curveball low and outside, ball two.
- 17:01Adair ended the year with an eight-game hitting streak and a 3.51 average during that stretch.
- 17:10Outfield playing them straight away.
- 17:13Jerry hits the center and right a lot.
- 17:15This time, he grounds the first.
- 17:17Shannon has it, throws the sapeta, and the Red Sox are out in order in the second.
- 17:22No runs, no hits, and nobody left on after one and a half for Gore, St. Louis one, and Boston nothing.
- 17:30Then hit into a double play, and Coteda fouled out to the third baseman, Dalton Jones.
- 17:36So here in the second with the cards leading 1-0, the batter is Tim McCarver, the catcher.
- 17:42McCarver batting 295 this season is 0-4-6 in the World Series.
- 17:47He is a left-handed batter with very good speed for a catcher.
- 17:51Pitch to Tim is a quite tall.
- 17:56McCarver was the batting leader in the 1964 World Series hitting 478.
- 18:02Got at least one hit in each of the seven games.
- 18:06Shannon is on deck, and Javier will be up third.
- 18:10He uses a closed stance, crouches at the plate.
- 18:13Bell throws a strike called on the outside corner.
- 18:17McCarver turns and questions Husky, Frank, and Mark.
- 18:24Strike to count on McCarver.
- 18:32Bell looks into Elston Howard for the time.
- 18:37Right-hander into action, the pitch, half ball outside.
- 18:41One ball and two strikes.
- 18:46St. Louis leading by a score of 1-0 as we start the last half of the second inning.
- 18:59Bell into action.
- 19:00The right-hander throws.
- 19:01McCarver checks the swing and takes the ball.
- 19:05Tim had a notion but held back on it.
- 19:09Bell over the years has averaged 6.4 strikeouts per nine innings during his American League career.
- 19:18Average just over six this year.
- 19:21He's been used as a starter and a reliever with Cleveland.
- 19:25Jerry delivers.
- 19:26There's a shot, ground ball through into center field for the base hit, and McCarver takes a big turn and holds it first.
- 19:33Tim McCarver leading off the second inning for St. Louis.
- 19:36Bill's a single. Petracelli went to his left to try to make a play, but there was no chance for Rico as the ball went past him into center field.
- 19:46So the lead man is on for the Cardinals in the second.
- 19:49They lead 1-0 and Mike Shannon, right-handed batting third baseman, comes up.
- 19:54That was the first hit for McCarver in the World Series.
- 19:58Shannon is 2-7 in series competition this year.
- 20:04He's got a good pitch to him.
- 20:06Drive deep toward left field.
- 20:08This is back.
- 20:09It is gone for a home run.
- 20:31Mike Shannon has hit a home run deep to left field going into the lower section, but well back.
- 20:41And the Cardinals lead by a score of 3-0 as McCarver scores ahead of him.
- 20:47And the batter now is Julianne Javier.
- 20:51The second baseman is batting 2-81, or did on a year, and in the World Series he's 3-7.
- 21:00He's done quite a job in the field.
- 21:03The pitch to him, line drive, they hit into left center field.
- 21:06Jocerski cuts it off and throws it in for a second.
- 21:09Here's the runner coming, and he is out at second base.
- 21:13As Jocerski, who has a great throwing arm, fires it into Adair to get him.
- 21:19Javier gets threaded for a single.
- 21:21Jocerski going high to his left, picks up the ball and fire a strike into Adair, and there is one man out.
- 21:29Howard, the catcher, goes to the mound to talk the bell.
- 21:36Shannon was the St. Louis right fielder in the 64th series, and he had a 450-foot home run in the first game against Whitey Ford.
- 21:50The batter is Sal Maxfield now, one man out.
- 21:55The side knows two runs on five hits.
- 22:00Three runs on five hits.
- 22:04Have a three-nothing yet.
- 22:05The first pitch is fouled off the end of the bat, strike one.
- 22:11This is the last half of the second inning, there is one out.
- 22:16Three-five and all for St. Louis, nothing yet for Boston.
- 22:23The play fell, kicks and throws, there is a high clock foul off first that is lifting out of play behind the St. Louis tuck-out.
- 22:33Two strikes on Maxfield.
- 22:35The owl is all for four at the plate in the World Series.
- 22:38The batter, 237 on the year, but drove in 41 runs, which was a new personal high for the quick-fielding side, no shortstop.
- 22:53Two strikes in.
- 22:56Bell fires a tight call on the outside corner of the knees.
- 23:01Maxfield knew it and quietly leaves.
- 23:04That's the first strike out for Gary Bell and there are two men out in the second.
- 23:11Nelson Brile gets a nice hand as he comes to the plate.
- 23:15As the batter, he's batted 150 during the year, no homers and no runs batted in.
- 23:27Young Pover sent only one year in the minors.
- 23:30The pitch to him is hit on the ground for a second, a dear hazard, closed the stop for the out and that's all for St. Louis in the second.
- 23:38But they have picked up two more runs and at the end of two to score, St. Louis three and Boston nothing.
- 23:46Rico Petrucelli leads off, that is 259 on the year, he's one for five in the World Series.
- 23:53Nelson Brile gets the sign from Tim McArthur.
- 23:57The right-handed throw, there's a high fly ball in the left field, fairly deep.
- 24:02Brock backing up though, has room and makes the catch for our number one.
- 24:06Petrucelli flies to Brock and left, one out in the third, St. Louis leading three to nothing.
- 24:19Elston Howard is at the plate now and on deck is George Thomas who will bat for Gary Barrell so Dick Williams has decided to go to his bullpen.
- 24:33Howard, 0 for 3 in the World Series, this is his 10th World Series.
- 24:38Pitch to Elston is a quite called on the outside corner at the knees.
- 24:48In the third inning, St. Louis leads three nothing.
- 24:51That shot's up with one out and nobody on.
- 24:54Third ball is blown outside and the count is one and one.
- 25:07Howard hits the ball to right center field a lot and Flood is playing them accordingly.
- 25:12Pitch to Elie is taken away, ball two and one strike.
- 25:16Howard has helped the Red Sox young pitching staff a great deal since coming over from the New York Nancies.
- 25:29Brials gets the sign, right-handed throw, shot down ball, pass to Pater going down to the right field corner and Howard is on with a single as Maritz fires the ball into second.
- 25:41That's a one out with one out on the Boston third. Elston Howard gets the first Red Sox field of the ball game and now George Thomas is up to bat for Gary Barrell.
- 25:54Thomas, a right-handed batter who's been around some and has been with the Red Sox the past two years as a utility performer, average this year up to 13.
- 26:07Nelson Brials getting ready to work to Thomas.
- 26:18Howard taking a very cautious lead away from first base.
- 26:23The pitch is outside, ball one.
- 26:28Thomas attends Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in the offseason.
- 26:33But he was born and brought up in Bloomington, Minnesota, the home of the twins.
- 26:42Brials at the belt, right-handed throw as Thomas fouls it back, the count is one and one.
- 26:52Gary Wartblusey continues to warm up out on the Boston bullpen, young man who won 19 ball games for Toronto last year.
- 27:04Paul Wenge Tinkerball, regular.
- 27:11St. Louis three, Boston nothing, one out, one on, and the Red Sox third. McCarver out a couple of steps and honoring something through his pitcher Brials and now Kim comes back at the plate and gets in the crouch.
- 27:28Start moving over a little bit to a straightaway center from left center out there in center field.
- 27:43Again for Lake Cooners Inn it's turned out to be a very nice day in St. Louis after a rainy, misty, foggy morning. The lights are on, but they don't really have to be.
- 27:59One ball and two strikes to count. We may get rain later in the day, but it's supposed to clear tomorrow.
- 28:08The one-two delivery, nice stop by McCarver, no advance by Howard as the ball was low and outside and Kim made a backhanded stab and prevented it from going by.
- 28:21McCarver working back at the plate. Capeta at first, Javier at second, Max Miller shortstop, and Shannon at third, Rockridge in left, Plotton center, and Marik in right for St. Louis.
- 28:34Two balls, two strikes to count for George Thomas. Jose Tardibol is on deck.
- 28:43Brials, kicked off a time. The right-hander is working a little more deliberately now.
- 28:51The pitch, low and outside, three and two on Thomas. One out, one on on the Boston third. Cardinals lead three to nothing.
- 29:03Brials, who has picked up one in the first inning, when Brock tripled and Plot tingled him in, and in the second, Shannon had it to run Homer.
- 29:19Brials goes to the belt. The pause and the pitch. One on it, and strike three. George Thomas strikes out.
- 29:29The strikeout for Brials, and there are two men out with Howard on first in the third.
- 29:36Jose Tardibol is at the plate. Red Sox right fielder, grounded out the second base in the first inning.
- 29:46Cepeda holding against Howard at first. Tardibol hits the ball to all fields, a spraig-type hitter. Here's the set.
- 30:00The pitch. There's a fly ball into right center field. Fluts coming hard, makes a flying running catch.
- 30:08Third floor makes a splendid running catch. Tardibol fly ball. The Red Sox are down on the third. No runs, one hit, one left.
- 30:16And so after two and one half, it is St. Louis three and Boston nothing.
- 30:24Wasblouki throws a fastball at the knee for a strike call.
- 30:30Three years on, Wasblouki can be very tough, and especially because of his easy motion, he's a hard man to have him at the beginning.
- 30:42Flut is on deck. Marath will bat third. Pitch changeup is flutted foul, and it's strike two on the speecher Lou Brock,
- 30:51who led the National League in stolen bases for the third year in a row, with 52 this year in 70 attempts.
- 30:59Wasblou is playing in his second World Series. He hit 300 in 1964, and many fans and many experts have predicted he would be one of the heroes of this one.
- 31:12Pitch is high to him for the ball, one and two.
- 31:19Brock hit more home runs in this ballpark than any other Cardinals, 13.
- 31:25Wasblouki with a big sweeping motion throws a fastball that swung on a miss, and Brock strikes out.
- 31:31That's the second strikeout for Boston's pitching, as Gary Bell had won.
- 31:36Bell worked a total of two innings, allowed five hits and two runs, and had one strikeout.
- 31:43One out in the last half of the third inning, and Kurt Flut is up.
- 31:47He drove in the first St. Louis run in the first inning with his sharp singular center sending home Brock.
- 31:53Wasblouki throws, there's a ground ball to second aid, they are in and up with it.
- 31:57Easy play for him, and he throws, cut out at first base.
- 32:01Two out in the third. Roger Maris now.
- 32:06Roger hit into a 1-6-3 double play in the first inning, bouncing one back to Bell, who threw to Petrocelli covering second, and then they pulled the double play at first.
- 32:18St. Louis three, Boston nothing, threw out nobody on last half of inning three.
- 32:23Second baseman Jerry Adair stepped back on the grass, the outfield playing Maris to pull, and the pitch.
- 32:31Fastball tails away, ball one.
- 32:39Third base coach Joe Schultz, hollering and terrorist minion to Maris.
- 32:43Wasblouki fires, pitches a checked swing foul back to the screen one and one.
- 32:493.30 down the lines in left and right field, 386 to straightaway left and right.
- 32:574.14 to dead center.
- 33:03One ball, one strike to Roger Maris.
- 33:07Wasblouki throws, breaking ball low and inside.
- 33:11Two and one.
- 33:16Elston Howard checking for Boston with Scott at first, Adair at second, Petrocelli at short, and Dalton Jones at third.
- 33:23Here's Sremski and Smiths and Cardabole from left to right in the outfield.
- 33:27High fly ball into right center field, Smiths and Cardabole converging, and it is Cardabole who makes the catch, retiring the side.
- 33:36The signals go in order, no runs, no hits, nobody left on at the end of three, St. Louis three, and Boston nothing.
- 33:44Dalton Jones, draw for Boston, knee-cluck out swinging in the first inning.
- 33:48One of two men has been a strikeout victim with the hands of Nelson Brile.
- 33:53Right-handed throws a curve that's chopped foul off the first-base tight on the ground, strike one.
- 33:59Jones does not strike out very often. He is now three for ten in this World Series.
- 34:08Here's Sremski on deck and Scott will follow, St. Louis leading three-nothing.
- 34:14Brile at the beginning of this year was the long reliever for the St. Louis staff, and what a job he's done since he's become a starter.
- 34:22There's a curve ball lined into left field, it's dropping in for a base hit in front of Luke Rock,
- 34:27and Dalton Jones leads off the Boston fourth inning with their second hit, a single.
- 34:33Runner at first base and nobody out, and the batter is Sremski.
- 34:38Sremski was hit by a pitch in the first inning as Brile hit him with a low inside delivery.
- 34:50Carl three for eight in the World Series, including a couple of home runs, and he now has two assists in the series in left field
- 34:58and has made a couple of brilliant plays in the field.
- 35:05Brile's at the belt, the pitch, you're seeing, fouls it back to the screen, strike one.
- 35:12Yes, he took that savage touch that he's employed all season long.
- 35:17Two-time American League batting champion, won it in 1963 and again in 1967,
- 35:28but in a much more up-parachuted way this year with a 44 home run, and he led the league and runs that it in.
- 35:37Brile's ready, right-handed throw, just shrunk, he looks at a curve inside, and the count goes to one ball and one strike.
- 35:46Dalton Jones at first, nobody out rather in the fourth inning, St. Louis with a three to nothing lead.
- 35:58With Sremski up, Sateta, although playing close, is not right at the bag on Jones.
- 36:07Brile throws the first and almost threw it away, and Sateta leaps up and pulled it down.
- 36:15Orlando was not at the bag, Brile's, well, he must have known that Sateta wasn't because he sure he had to glance before he threw.
- 36:24But then he kind of just threw a high lob and Sateta jumped up and took it down.
- 36:30Well, I'm sure I saw Sateta going and say something to Brile, so evidently he told he's going to plan back of him.
- 36:36Dalton Jones is not too fast afoot, he's trading by three runs,
- 36:41it don't look like he'll be feeling so he's planning back of him, but sometimes a pitcher just forgets about that,
- 36:47and the best thing and the only thing you can do, once you make that move, you have to release the ball,
- 36:52he just gave it a little basketball talk about it, keeping from balling.
- 36:57The count is one and one to Sremski.
- 37:02Brile gets the sign from McArthur, right-hander ready.
- 37:05The pitch, he has hit the ground ball to second, Javier clips to second for one, back to first, double play.
- 37:13Four to six to three, Javier to Maxfield as Sateta, and there are two men out on the Boston court,
- 37:19there's Todd Sremski, bangs into a double play.
- 37:23One of the amazing things about Sremski this year was his consistency.
- 37:30His monthly home run totals, April of course is a short month in baseball, he had two in April,
- 37:36and then eight, eight, eight, nine, and nine over the following five months of the year.
- 37:43George Scott is up now, the pitch to George is grounded foul down the third base side, strike one.
- 37:51Scott hit the ball well his first time, hard off Brile, and as it deflected off the pitcher,
- 37:58Javier came in and made a very good play in grabbing the ball bare-handed and throwing Scott out.
- 38:07One strike to count on the big Boston first baseman, two men out on the fourth, St. Louis ahead, three to nothing.
- 38:19Here's the pitch, Scott swings and fouls it back off Newmont's protector, strike two.
- 38:27Frank who used to play football for the New York Giants, jumped around a little on that one.
- 38:34Two men out, nobody on on the fourth, two strikes to count on Scott, St. Louis three and the Red Sox nothing.
- 38:47The pitch, in the dirt, stopped by McArthur.
- 38:54Brile has not watched anybody, but he has been wild low a number of times and McAvoy has come up with some pretty good saves.
- 39:05He's been wild low with his breaking stuff.
- 39:09One ball and two strikes on Scott.
- 39:16Here's the pitch, one on a net, strike three, one that's for a low outside pitch.
- 39:21And that is all for Scott and the Red Sox in the fourth.
- 39:24No runs, one hit and nobody left on, so after three and one-half the score is St. Louis three and Boston nothing.
- 39:33The Pater fouled out the third baseman, Dolvin Jones in the first inning.
- 39:42While Glukey throws, there's a high foul coming back out of reach.
- 39:50Two strikes to count on Cepeda. Tim McCarver is on deck and Cannon will be up third.
- 39:57This is the last of the fourth, Cepeda's leading it off, the Cardinals have a three-nothing lead.
- 40:03The pitch is one on a miss, strike three.
- 40:07Cepeda is out and he's now 0 for 9 in the World Series.
- 40:12Second strikeout for Gary Wazlukey and it brings up Tim McCarver who broke the ice for himself in the second inning
- 40:21as he left the inning off with a single and scored the second St. Louis run coming home ahead of Shannon when Mike Olmert.
- 40:34St. Howard sends the sign out, Wazlukey throws and the pitch is low and inside, ball one.
- 40:44The.478 average that McCarver had in the 64th series was the best by a National League player since Pepper Martin's 500 in 1931.
- 40:58Wazlukey winds and throws, McCarver checks the swing and takes the ball outside, ball two.
- 41:08McCarver a left-handed batter, as we mentioned earlier he has very good speed.
- 41:13He led National League catchers in stealing in 1967 with a total of eight.
- 41:24Here's the two-nothing pitch, high foul lifting out of play into the lower key shot third.
- 41:34Two balls, one strike.
- 41:36Working behind the plate, Frank Humont of the American League, Augie Donatelli of the National League at first base,
- 41:42Ed Runge of the American League at second and Paul Prior of the National League at third,
- 41:47John Stevens of the American League down for Buckfield Line and Al Pollock of the National in right.
- 41:55The two-one pitch, McCarver hits the ground ball, shot to his right and with it,
- 41:59flips underhand to Wazlukey for the out. McCarver bounces out three-one, two down on the Cardinal fourth.
- 42:06St. Louis leads three-nothing.
- 42:10Here is Mike Shannon who in the second inning hit a home run to Buckfield to put the cards out three-nothing.
- 42:26They had had a one-to-nothing lead and he hits the two-run homer in the second.
- 42:31Wazlukey now has picked the five men, has retired all of them.
- 42:39Paul Dean Reichmander looks into Howard for the time.
- 42:43The pitch, hit on the ground toward short, Petracelli to his right, up with it, throws to Scott for the out
- 42:49and the Cardinals go in order in the fourth inning.
- 42:52No runs, no hits and nobody left on so at the end of four it is St. Louis three-boss and nothing.
- 42:58Okay, thank you very much.
- 43:00Smith pops up to the third baseman, Shannon in the second as Mike made a very good play on a little looper.
- 43:06He had to go back and do his left on.
- 43:09Nelson Biles on the mound, right-hander fires a fastball low and inside, ball one.
- 43:18Smith will be followed by Jerry Ager and then Rico Petracelli will be up third.
- 43:24St. Louis with a three-to-nothing lead, gets one on the first and two in the second.
- 43:31The pitch to Smith is cowl back out of play off the third base side and back of the red star dugout, one and one.
- 43:41Smith is a twitch hitter and from the left side uses a closed stance and from the right side he opens up them.
- 43:56Smith is outfield playing reggie straight away. Here's the pitch to him, curveball lined in the right field, it's a base hit.
- 44:03Maris started to charge it but saw that he had no chance and Smith leads off the Boston fifth with a strong single in the right.
- 44:12Roger started. Maris is a very fine defensive outfielder.
- 44:18There have been times in his major league career when that's been overlooked because of his power.
- 44:24Now time is called by third base umpire Paul Pryor for just a moment but we're ready to go again.
- 44:34As Ager steps in, the second inning in a row, the reds aren't going to have the first man on
- 44:41but they have not been able to solve files in the scoring department.
- 44:46Smith at first, nobody out on the fifth. Crowder first, red news act safely.
- 44:55Bobby Dore keeping a close eye on the red star center fielder to pay the holding at the back against him.
- 45:01Here's the pitch, late foul back upstairs.
- 45:05Ager rounded out the cannon at third base in the second. Streg Lewis leads Boston by a score of three to nothing.
- 45:16Three five and all for the Cardinals, zero three and all for the Red Sox.
- 45:32Nelson Pryor is ready to work. Third ball is popped up down toward first base.
- 45:39The tater coming in and right in front of the bag, about ten feet in front of it, just in fair territory, takes the pop by Ager.
- 45:47So there's one out in the fifth inning for the Red Sox and the batter will be the shortstop Rico Petracelli.
- 45:55Rico flied the left field in the third inning.
- 46:00The Red Sox's color has shown steady improvement.
- 46:04The RBI totals in the last year have gone from 33 and 65 to 59 and 66 up to 65 this year.
- 46:13And he was the shortstop in the all-star game.
- 46:17Here's the tech.
- 46:19This is a terrible very poor strike call.
- 46:23Petracelli in a cabin means little rock and that is what Petracelli has been in the Boston infield.
- 46:30He's been a very steady influence with the glove.
- 46:35One out, one on in the fifth.
- 46:38Here's the tech.
- 46:41Blyle throws Rico's wings at Mr. Cracut.
- 46:51Petracelli had a very good finish last year and again this season.
- 47:00Comes from Brooklyn, New York.
- 47:08Blyle's taking a little extra time now.
- 47:13Here's the pitch.
- 47:14There's a check, wing, fly ball into short center field.
- 47:17Rico's flood's dancing, he's got it, throw to first base, Smith gets back in time.
- 47:23This flood, who can fly, just did.
- 47:27He came racing in on a fly ball by Petracelli.
- 47:31Rico is trying to hold back on his wing and the speedy center fielder cracked it down.
- 47:37Two men out, Smith on first base in the fifth inning, same blue as they had to three to nothing.
- 47:43Elston Howard at the plus.
- 47:48Howard single the right field in the third as one of the three Boston hits.
- 48:02Here's the pitch, low and outside, ball one.
- 48:09Howard has the thrill of hitting his home run and his first time at bat in the World Series in 1955 against John Newcomb at Yankee Stadium.
- 48:25Smith leading away from first, Blyle throws, Howard swings and misses on a high fastball, one and one.
- 48:32In the second game of the 1960 World Series, Howard tied a record by making two hits and one inning, a triple and a single at Pittsburgh.
- 48:44This is his 50th series game.
- 48:50One ball, one strike, two out, Smith at first base, St. Louis leading three nothing.
- 48:59Right-hander Nelson Blyle throws, the pitch is foul back up on the swing.
- 49:20Blyle's getting a new baseball.
- 49:28Here's Peta holding against Smith down at first base.
- 49:37Now the right-hander of the Cardinals gets ready.
- 49:42The one-two pitch to Howard, strike's all on the outside corner, he got it.
- 49:47The Red Sox are out in the fifth inning.
- 49:49For Boston, no runs, they had one base hit and lead one.
- 49:53After four and one-half, St. Louis leads three to nothing.
- 49:57We'll see all about it.
- 50:00Okay, Pee-wee, thank you very much.
- 50:03Pooley and Javier is going to be beating off against Jerry Wasblewski who's been very effective.
- 50:08He's hit six men and retired all of them.
- 50:11If Howard hadn't had a base hit, he probably would not be in there now because the Red Sox are trying to catch the Cardinals who have a three-nothing lead
- 50:20and Dick Williams naturally would have gone to a ten-kitter in this particular situation.
- 50:26Pee-wee and Javier has had quite a year for himself.
- 50:30He improved his average 53 points in 1967.
- 50:34He had a single to left field in the second, so he is four for eight in the series at the plate and has done quite a job in the field.
- 50:42Take the fastball on the outside corner for his strike call.
- 50:53The Red Sox over the course of the season have shown quite an ability to fight back in the late stages,
- 50:59but so too have the Cardinals in winning the National League flag.
- 51:03A pitch is swung on a nurse as he went out ahead of a breaking pitch.
- 51:07Two strikes on Javier.
- 51:11Maxfield is on deck.
- 51:19Yaciel playing straight away.
- 51:23Wazlouki delivers. Pitch is high and the count is one and two.
- 51:39Wazlouki is tall, being right-handed. They're a very quiet fellow.
- 51:48He winds and throws. Curveball is low and outside. Two balls, two strikes to count.
- 51:56St. Louis with a three-to-nothing lead as we play in the last half of the fifth inning.
- 52:01A church-sleeved crowd at Bush Memorial Stadium watching the Red Sox and the Cardinals in the third game of the 1967 World Series.
- 52:17Here's the pitch. Swung on a nurse. Strike three. Javier going for a thinking fastball.
- 52:24And that is the third strikeout for Wazlouki. There is one out in the fifth. And the batter is Maxfield.
- 52:31Dale was called out on strikes in the second inning.
- 52:35If he joined us late in the first game, Brock led off with a triple. Clark singled him home.
- 52:41In the second, McIver led off with a single. Shannon hit a two-run homer.
- 52:46Here's the foul back out of play. Strike one.
- 52:51And that's been all in the scoring department as the Cardinals have three runs on five hits, the Red Sox no runs on three hits.
- 53:08The outfield plays Maxfield a little bit toward right.
- 53:13And the curve that swung on a miss. Strike two.
- 53:25On deck is the pitcher Nelson Braille.
- 53:29Wazlouki throws. Third ball hit into Wrightfield.
- 53:33Pradovold going over. Smith right alongside him.
- 53:36Wazlouki makes the catch for the out. Two down on the st. Louis fifth inning. Three nothing. The Cardinals lead and Nelson Braille is coming up.
- 53:49Twenty-four-year-old right-hander has done quite a job here this afternoon against the team that led the American League in batting this year, the Boston Red Sox.
- 54:00He has not really been in any serious difficulty and he's resting on a three-run lead.
- 54:07Grounded the second his first time. Swings it to clore over to Petrocelli.
- 54:11Riegel throws over to Scott and that's it in the fifth as the Cardinals are out in order.
- 54:16Nine men in a row for Wazlouki. No runs, no hits and nobody left on.
- 54:22And so as we reach the end of five the score is the Red Sox or St. Louis three and the Red Sox nothing.
- 54:30The Cardinals scored one run in the first inning. As Brock opened the game up with a simple curve, Clark came right back with singles. In the second inning they scored two runs. McArthur singles. Mike Cannon hit a home run in the left field seat.
- 54:54But the runs and that's where the score is right now. The Cardinals three and the Red Sox nothing was going in the top half for six innings.
- 55:03And Jerry Wazlouki hits the white of all games. And release of Gary Bell retired nine men in a row.
- 55:12Talking about picking great ball, Nelson Brow first pitch.
- 55:16Mike Andrews makes it out of the third field. Mike Andrews picked at him. Of course, Gary Wazlouki. And the Red Sox have something started here in the top half for six innings.
- 55:27And the Red Sox fans have not had much to see about today as it's been Nelson Brow's all the way.
- 55:35And he's only given up three hits until that hit right there by Mike Andrews leading off in the sixth inning here.
- 55:42Jose Cardoborle, middle left headed batter with a runner on his first base. Nelson Brow comes back, checks his runner over his first base.
- 55:53The pitch. Cardoborle bunch one right back to Brow. He may have had a chance to go to second. He likely to go to Cepeda's first base.
- 56:02And Andrews goes down to second, I believe. And Brow should have got the man to second, but with the score clean and arping, he wanted to take no chance.
- 56:16Winding up on the Red Sox. It looks like he'll be the new pitcher, Lee Stank.
- 56:24Left a right hander. Had a real prime year for the Red Sox. And the hitter. Here's the fellow that looks real good.
- 56:34A lot of part of the season for the Red Sox when they had that tough battle to win the American League tennis.
- 56:42Got himself a base hit today. His name is Dalton Jones. Nelson Brow looking down to his catcher Tim McCarver.
- 56:52And Andrews to second with his hit. Inside, ball one. Dalton Jones hits.407 from August the 19th with 24 hits and 59 at bat.
- 57:10Rating his average from.220 up to.289. So you can see when he got real hot when they needed him. Dalton Jones. Nelson Brow pitches in there for a strike one.
- 57:24One ball and one strike on Dalton Jones. Jones will be followed by none other than Superman, Batman, Carson.
- 57:34All rolled up in one. Carl Yosemite. And he's made a believer out of me. He's quite a ball player. He doesn't beat to the bat.
- 57:44He'll beat to the field. Strong arm. Dalton Jones. Pitches. Back ball. Just got that outstretched corner. One ball and two strikes.
- 57:58What's been about Carl Yosemite? After he finished the game last Sunday with four hits. Four for four. I went up to Carl.
- 58:08I said, Carl, I heard these players call you Superman. I'll have to agree with them. Quite a player.
- 58:19One ball, two strikes. Nelson Bower is taking a little more time out there. Check these runners. Here's the pitch. Ball hit out of the right field.
- 58:28It's a base hit. Roger Myers coming in. Will Andrews score? Here comes the goal. He'll make it easily as it throws a little bit off the right.
- 58:37And the Red Sox break the ice here. They now trail by a score of three to one as Dalton Jones gets a line drive single out in right field.
- 58:50His second hit of the day. Dalton Jones did not go down to second base on that throw.
- 58:58And he was way better. Cepeda makes that ball out if he did. So he's on his first base with one away and Carl Yosemite is ahead.
- 59:12Yosemite hits by a pitch. His first time up and grounded into a double play. Four sixes to three his last time up.
- 59:22Three to one the Cardinals over the Red Sox when the top half is the center. Yosemite holds that bat high.
- 59:29Browse takes on curveball in there. Carl tries one. This is what Ken and I were talking about.
- 59:38That Nelson Browse has that real good overhand curveball. And it's a touch hit for a left-hander hit to hit.
- 59:47They thought that they may throw Yosemite a few at all today and try to keep that fastball right away from him.
- 59:55This is a big ball part. If he gets a hold of it, he'll hit him out of any part. That includes Yellowstone.
- 1:00:05There's the ball. Four long. No contact.
- 1:00:12Browse has something on that one. Strike two on it. On his first base, Dalton Jones. One away. Carl Yosemite.
- 1:00:24It's a hitter. No balls, two strikes. Let's see what Nelson Browse was so turned in in this situation.
- 1:00:35Yosemite fouls the plate a little bit more. He gets that bat high in the air.
- 1:00:43Dalton Browse keeps that. Looks over to runners first. Here's the pitch. Foul off the left.
- 1:00:53It's a good fastball. Yosemite may have been looking for that curveball.
- 1:01:01Looks at the top center of the room. Looks for a curveball with two strikes on it.
- 1:01:05The fastball was by. Three runs for the Cardinals on five hits. One run on five hits for the Red Sox.
- 1:01:16We're in the top half of the sixth inning. Here at Foote Stadium in Stantford, Missouri.
- 1:01:24The third game of the World Series. One game a piece. Yosemite takes the fastball outside low.
- 1:01:33One and two.
- 1:01:40And the on deck circle. Dalton Browse. It's quite a job for the Cardinals after Bob Gibson got hurt.
- 1:01:55They thought they had lost the pennant. This young subbuck came right in and took over.
- 1:02:01One and two pitch. Curveball down out to Javier.
- 1:02:04Hooked it up. Hooked the ball over to Capeta. To retire and Stretche. But moved it down to second base.
- 1:02:12Dalton Jones.
- 1:02:16Well this inning started out by Mike Andrews batting for Jay Wajruski.
- 1:02:23He's got a base hit. Cardinals. Sacrified. Jones got a base hit.
- 1:02:37Now Wajruski just rounded out and Jones moved to second. It flew away.
- 1:02:45Jardis a hitter. Jardis Stutz. What has he done?
- 1:02:55He's over two. He rounded out his first time.
- 1:02:59And sucked out his last time. A curveball and a bandy. In there. Strike one.
- 1:03:10George Scott. They call him Tater. That's what he calls a home run.
- 1:03:20In his last 50 games, from August 13 on, he has three-thirty-two.
- 1:03:29Curveball. One-on.
- 1:03:32Two strikes on George Scott. Nelson Brow.
- 1:03:41He doesn't take much of a windup. That's not too many the Cardinals' players do.
- 1:03:47I think they were taught by Billie Marcus. They don't take anything windup. They come set.
- 1:03:55Let it go. That's what Nelson Brow is doing. That's what he's doing right now.
- 1:03:59Here's the pitch. Curveball. Hit out to the shortstop.
- 1:04:02Maxwell up with the ball. Over to Tater. That's all for George Scott.
- 1:04:06That's all for the Red Sox, dear. The top half is six-fitting.
- 1:04:10They came up with one run on two hits. No errors. And one man left on base.
- 1:04:19With the four-actors. It's the Cardinals' three and the Red Sox one.
- 1:04:23Ready to tell you about it. Might have had to hit me. But one down to third base. That's no fair. No one will get it.
- 1:04:30But it's low foul.
- 1:04:33Mason first pitch. That's Lady Lou Brock. That would have saved them no chance.
- 1:04:43We said you have to keep this fellow off the side two on the beach to Cardinals.
- 1:04:50That's not easily done either. Brock, triple in the first inning.
- 1:04:54Chuck out in the third. And here he is again in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:04:59The Cardinals lead three to one.
- 1:05:04Got some good help in this booth today. Tony Kubeck.
- 1:05:10And Ed Snow works with us.
- 1:05:13Makes a big space call every Saturday throughout the year. Sandy Colt-Fex.
- 1:05:20Brock Busworth down to first base, man. They'll never get it.
- 1:05:26A good play by George Scott, the first baseman.
- 1:05:39George Scott, the big first baseman, came over.
- 1:05:44Bare handed the ball. But we were talking about Brock Graves' feet.
- 1:05:50He's been three days in the pitch in the first base.
- 1:05:56We told you, this fellow likes to run.
- 1:06:00He only had, let's see, 52 stolen bases on the year.
- 1:06:07He's now going to go on the first pitch. Let's watch it.
- 1:06:10No one away.
- 1:06:12Same as before, the first thing, George coming out.
- 1:06:15Both Brock slipped a little bit.
- 1:06:17Scott says, come on, it's on. It's telling.
- 1:06:22Now maybe I had it.
- 1:06:28We'll keep it on Brock. First flunk to hit it.
- 1:06:32He can handle that back.
- 1:06:35It's over the first base.
- 1:06:39Brock's back in there. He dives back in.
- 1:06:45You have to keep this fellow closed to Brock at first base.
- 1:06:49He comes in.
- 1:06:51Come to throw the first.
- 1:06:53He may go to third. They'd better hurry it up on him.
- 1:06:56He's making a turn in second. Here he goes to first.
- 1:07:00He may go home.
- 1:07:04He holds up his gun.
- 1:07:20They say, we'll get an air on the throne.
- 1:07:27This is what we've talked about so often.
- 1:07:33But, when he gets on those sacks, he not only follows the pitchers, he worries the infielders, because they have to starten up.
- 1:07:45Right now, the infielers pulled in as no one is out.
- 1:07:50And, Hurt Floater to hit it. And, he has not made a pitch for the Jimmy Three Pitchers of George shot at first base.
- 1:07:59Back ball, low and outside, ball one.
- 1:08:05Talking about our help here in the...
- 1:08:13In the first, Sandy Focac. Bill Gallagher helping me.
- 1:08:18Hurt Floater hits a little lazy flat in the right field. I don't believe Bill Brock can score on this and Lou Brock, here comes a throw and a cutoff for George Scott.
- 1:08:29It was not deep enough to get in Lou Brock from third base.
- 1:08:37So, it's one away now. Lou Brock still on his third base.
- 1:08:51When the bottom half is sixth inning, the Cardinals have three runs on six hits and the Red Sox have one run on five hits.
- 1:09:01Watt, Olsinski, in the bullpen for the Red Sox. The infielers still in. Roger Maris to the hitter.
- 1:09:13Lee Sang is not going into his lineup. He's looking right at Lou Brock. Here's the pitch. It's lowered inside, ball one.
- 1:09:21You can see what Brock can do to a ball clerk. Usually a pitcher will take a windup when a man is on third, but not with Brock's speed.
- 1:09:37They're concerned about him shooting home. The pitch to Roger Maris. Put on his foul straight back. One ball and one strike on Roger.
- 1:09:51Especially for the Red Sox, shot at first. That's bad. Second.
- 1:10:04Dr. Selleck's shot. Dr. Jones at third. The Simpkins left. He's not too deep, by the way. Reggie Smith in center, pull over right.
- 1:10:13O'Day Cardinals in right field. Elton Howard to catch him. Lee Sang to pitch it. And here comes the pitch inside. Ball two.
- 1:10:24Lou Brock on his third. This is Roger Maris' sixth World Series.
- 1:10:32He's playing 28 series games going into this series this year. The turn one pitch. Put on his track two. A turn ball right into his foul.
- 1:10:51Two and two at the top. One away. Elton Howard out to say something to Lee Sang. Sang takes his hit. Elton Howard down now.
- 1:11:06Back of Roger Maris. He's giving the sign. Sang taking the good look. He's ready. Elton Howard holds that target right in the middle. Here's the pitch. Roger.
- 1:11:20And a hell of a foul down at first base line. And it was just foul. Ken Colburn and Amtee Wiering here at First Stadium.
- 1:11:39Bringing our youth fans to the third game of the World Series. The Cardinals won the first game. The Red Sox won the second.
- 1:11:52Here's the put two pitch to Roger's outside. Ball three. Cardinals out in front. Three to one.
- 1:12:02Nelson Browse all the way. For the Cardinals. Gary Bell started for the Red Sox. Gary Wazlowski came in and now then Lee Sang here at the bottom half.
- 1:12:16Here's the pitch. The ball. The base hit out at the right ball. Hold those hard balls over to cut the ball off. In the score is Lugra. And holding on at first base is Roger Maris.
- 1:12:38Roger Maris tops in the fourth run. Here for the Cardinals. Getting a nice hand. The big bull. Orlando Cepeda. Lee Sang takes a look over first.
- 1:12:57Goes over there. Who knows? They may start Roger Maris. Orlando Cepeda does not have a base hit. And the third he's 0 for 8. 0 for 9.
- 1:13:18He's a base hit by Roger. That's his third run batted in this year. He has two on ground balls in game one. They sent Lugra home. So he has been productive in that RBI department for St. Louis.
- 1:13:37Lugra better the productive than run for him. And how? That one strike. That's Orlando Cepeda. The ball is popped up. Elston Howard may have a chance. He's right in front of the screen. Here comes over George Scott. Elston Howard takes a plug in there. He heads up and makes a bluff.
- 1:13:54But he's only kidding. That's George Scott at the first base. Came all the way in. Roger made a real good bluff. But didn't go it. Two away. The hitter is Tim McHarvey.
- 1:14:20McHarvey got a base hit to center field. And a grounded out. Last time up. So he's 1 for 2. First time up today. Left hander hitter. He's blocked over that place. Least hander and curveball in there for 12 strike one.
- 1:14:40Elston Howard is still back to same. Little high. He's staying ahead to jump but one strike on McHarvey. On his first base. Roger Maersk.
- 1:14:53The outfield. Swung around a little bit to the right. McHarvey. That will hit the ball anywhere though. Roger Maersk takes a good lead off first. The pitch through McHarvey is too high. One ball and one strike.
- 1:15:19McHarvey will be followed by Mike Shannon who hit a home run in the second inning. A red shot. One run on five hits. The Cardinals four runs on seven hits.
- 1:15:36Where the bottom has the sixth inning. Lee Sang comes in. Here's the pitch through McHarvey. He's started. Held up. The umpire is in there. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:15:49Lee Sang. Taking plenty of time. McHarvey crosses over the play. Here's the pitch curveball. A little lazy looser.
- 1:16:15The third base for Dalton Jones. Other than taking for the third out. And that's all for the Cardinals here. The bottom half is sixth inning. And the score after sixth inning is a play.
- 1:16:26With the Cardinals four and the red shot one.
- 1:16:29Reggie Fett hooks it to the hard out to right field. Roger Maersk going way back. That ball is gone for a home run.
- 1:16:52Reggie Fett on the first pitch by Nelson Browse. Hits the ball high and far out of the right field. A home run.
- 1:17:07That's two for three. The only time he got him out he hit the ball hard. Jerry Adair is the hitter.
- 1:17:15The Cardinals now lead four to two with the top half of seventh inning. Nelson Browse. Breaking pitch. Blowing outside. Ball one.
- 1:17:24It's Boston Red Sox club has been coming from behind all year hasn't it?
- 1:17:29That's been the pattern for you. They've been very tough in the late 10s and trying to get back in against a very tough young right hander here today.
- 1:17:36The pitch to Jerry Adair after shortstop. Max Leporetto the flip over to Cepeda. And that's all for Jerry Adair. One down.
- 1:17:50That brings up a little shortstop. Rico Petruccelli who fly it out to left.
- 1:17:58Leporetto. And throughout the center. He's going for two.
- 1:18:07Forty-two. Cardinals over the red side. Nelson Browse. Here's the pitch. Outside. Ball one.
- 1:18:19Browse. Doesn't make too much of a move. Before he gets off. Before he goes into the pitch.
- 1:18:30Put his foot on the rubber. Here it is. Just as he lets her go.
- 1:18:34It pops up. Out into Leporetto. Lerbrot coming over. Calls for it. Hold his hand up here. And takes it. Out number two.
- 1:18:43So after a quick home run by Reggie Smith. Browse settles down. Gets the next two batters.
- 1:18:54That brings up Elton Hart. Hart's got a face hit. And the right field is first time up. And struck out his last time.
- 1:19:07One for two. Good curveball. Low and outside. Ball one.
- 1:19:20Hart with that wide stance of his. Way back in the batter's park. Keeps moving that back.
- 1:19:24Nelson Browse looks at him. He's ready now. The pitch. Low and outside. Ball two.
- 1:19:29Hart checks with his folks. Popowski at third. The Red Sox have been trying to play catch up since the second inning.
- 1:19:42Really since the first inning. Because the Cardinals scored one in the first. Chuck baseball. Hart taking all the wares.
- 1:19:50Two balls in one strike. Whenever you get behind. They're like three to nothing.
- 1:20:01Can't play too much baseball. Got to set and hope that someone gets on.
- 1:20:07Pick one here to pick a couple here and get back in the ball. You can't hit and run or steal really.
- 1:20:12Ball right back to the middle. Javier the second baseman over there. Flips it over to Cepeda.
- 1:20:16And that's all for the Red Sox here in the top half of the seventh inning.
- 1:20:23But they came up with one run on one hit. No errors. And no one left on base.
- 1:20:27That's the sixth and a half inning to play for the Cardinals. Four and the Red Sox two.
- 1:20:316-10 Mike Shannon leading things off. The Cardinals in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:20:36The first pitch by Lee Chang in there for call strike one.
- 1:20:38Mike Shannon is the only native of San Luis playing on the Cardinals.
- 1:20:46The umpire is sending someone out to the right center.
- 1:20:52There's a banner hanging over the fence. Get it out of there. That's Frank Humane behind home plate.
- 1:20:59One strike on Mike Shannon. He had a home run in the second inning.
- 1:21:04He must play down the third base line. He'll never get it.
- 1:21:08Dalton Jones up for the ball and road play.
- 1:21:19Mike Shannon from Dalton Jones back at third.
- 1:21:25Late one down. Got himself a face hit.
- 1:21:28The Cardinals four, the Red Sox two. We're in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:21:36And the hitter now is Hoolie Javier.
- 1:21:40That was a pretty good serve.
- 1:21:44Got a face hit. The left field is first time.
- 1:21:49That's struck out. His last time he's made a couple of fine plays in the series.
- 1:21:54It's one of the finest plays I've ever seen.
- 1:21:59In the second game of the semifinals.
- 1:22:03In boxing, he stole for the ball. He didn't think he had a chance to even knock the ball down.
- 1:22:10He not only came up with it, he threw the man out of second base.
- 1:22:16No one away. Javier is the hitter.
- 1:22:18Bang, hit. The hit guy, Elton Hyres, starts the Shannon-LeJoy.
- 1:22:24The Cardinals like to hit and run. They like to run.
- 1:22:32Shannon at first base. He only has two stolen bases on the year.
- 1:22:41They're throwing out fourth time. Javier.
- 1:22:45Get the piece of the ball. Here's the pitch.
- 1:22:49Javier hits the foul. Down the left field line, back in the stands.
- 1:22:55One ball and one strike.
- 1:23:01Four runs for the Cardinals on eight hits. Two runs for the Red Sox on six hits.
- 1:23:09We have a runner at first base, Mike Shannon.
- 1:23:12And the batter is Javier. One ball and one strike. Lee Stank.
- 1:23:22He's the pitcher.
- 1:23:25Okay, Darrell started for the Red Sox. Marsalouki now Stank.
- 1:23:30The one and one pitch for Stank. Here it is. Run on, miss, right through.
- 1:23:34The Red Sox in the infield defensively.
- 1:23:42George Scott holding Mike Shannon on down there.
- 1:23:46Javier Depp, second, and Texas Filler of short stops, Joplin Jones at third.
- 1:23:52And the outfield, Japski, miss, putter ball.
- 1:23:58Elton Hyres, the catcher. Lee Stank, center. Here's the pitch.
- 1:24:02Little tap out for short stops. Hector Shelley has to go to first base.
- 1:24:07And they got Javier, moving down to second, Mike Shannon.
- 1:24:12That ball was not hit too hard. Hector Shelley had to charge it.
- 1:24:17Unable to throw out Javier. So he can go down at first base line.
- 1:24:23That's what they're like.
- 1:24:32That brings up Darrell Maxwell. Maxwell struck out and flat out.
- 1:24:37The right sphere. He's over two.
- 1:24:41Down at second base, Mike Shannon looking around, checking to see where the short stops.
- 1:24:46Hector Shelley saying, look back at Shannon. Here's the pitch. In there for Carl Strickland.
- 1:24:54Darrell Maxwell, one of the fellows that played Little League Baseball.
- 1:25:02And his mother, they tell me, was his father. He said she's pretty tough-hearted.
- 1:25:09There goes the runner, Mike Shannon. The ball hit out in the turn of field.
- 1:25:12They make it a double play. They're just going to put on. Here comes the call.
- 1:25:16Did we get him? No.
- 1:25:25Mike Shannon was feeling third. Maxwell hits the ball.
- 1:25:30Joel Jones is close to third base.
- 1:25:34Down the ball for Mike Shannon. Told him to go back to second. He just made it.
- 1:25:39So it's two away. And the hitter is Nelson Brow.
- 1:25:44The umpire today, behind home plate, Frank Humana. First base, Paul Pryor.
- 1:25:49At second base, Ed Runge. First base, Paul Pryor.
- 1:25:53At left field, on the line, Johnny Stevenson.
- 1:25:57And at right field, my old friend, Mr. Al Farley.
- 1:26:03On the right field line.
- 1:26:05He was speaking with Al Varley. Jim Longboard, he was the head after the game the other day.
- 1:26:11The one hitter in Boston that Varley worked behind the plate.
- 1:26:14He was a great umpire. The first time he'd ever worked with Mr. Varley back at the plate ball.
- 1:26:20And Jim was very complimentary about him.
- 1:26:23He's one of the finest hitters I've ever seen. And he's been around for a long time.
- 1:26:27In fact, I think he came up about the same time I have here, 1940.
- 1:26:30Nelson Brow, the hitter. Big tank. First pitch, one on a miss, strike one.
- 1:26:36It's always nice to hear a pitcher say that.
- 1:26:40Yes it is. It doesn't always happen that way, does it?
- 1:26:43No. Al gets on me a little bit. I used to complain and moan a little bit on those calls, strikes.
- 1:26:51Every time he sees me, he'll look at me and kind of make a face and say, oh no, that ain't no strike.
- 1:27:00Try to imitate me. And I guess I did.
- 1:27:03I had to beg a little bit.
- 1:27:06One strike on Nelson Brow, late-string pitcher, purple, one on miss.
- 1:27:11I imagine on that last one, Mike Shannon must have been on his own going to third.
- 1:27:20And moving over and stealing, he would have had that base stolen easily, obviously.
- 1:27:26He had a real good jump.
- 1:27:29I don't think he fell down anywhere along here. So I'm pretty with him, baby.
- 1:27:33Yes. Her ball outside. Ball one.
- 1:27:43The Cardinals scored one in the first, two in the second, one in the sixth for their four runs.
- 1:27:50Red shot scored one in the sixth, one in the seventh for their two. Four to two, the Cardinals over the red shot.
- 1:27:57And the bottom half to seven here, a little lazy looper. The shot stop, kept the celly, goes back.
- 1:28:03The dad calls for it, he takes it. And that's all for Brow and that's all for Cardinals here.
- 1:28:08And the bottom half to seven, the score here at First Stadium, the Cardinals four and the Reds shots two.
- 1:28:16He's all for one. He's set 50 series up about.
- 1:28:21On the youth, he's at a 251.
- 1:28:28Good par, 16 hole mark.
- 1:28:33But he has no contact. Good fast ball by Brow. One ball and one strike.
- 1:28:38Brow checking with his catcher, McHarver.
- 1:28:49Bill Sang takes too much time before he steps out of there. McHarver looks over the bench.
- 1:28:58He wants something. Brow doesn't want to score it. Here it is.
- 1:29:04That ball, run on, set, strike three.
- 1:29:09Of course you'll see that happen a lot of times.
- 1:29:13Catcher wants a fast ball. Keep giving it signs.
- 1:29:20If he doesn't want to score it, he has to go back because the manager wants it.
- 1:29:26I'll throw it. One ball, two strikes. Nelson Brow takes his head.
- 1:29:31Here's the pitch. Good curve ball, but it breaks too far.
- 1:29:36Brow's got a real good overhand curve ball. Little trouble getting it over.
- 1:29:47Four to two, the score. The Cardinals over the Reds side.
- 1:29:52Bill Boyd, pitch hitting for Lee Sang and the top half, the eighth inning.
- 1:29:58Brow's, pitch, downer, out to shortstop Maxwell. He's up for the ball.
- 1:30:05Clips the ball over to Cepeda and that's all for Cepeda. Go for it.
- 1:30:11The Cardinals, clips the ball around to his field.
- 1:30:14Cepeda's first, Javier is second, Maxwell is short, Shannon is third, left field,
- 1:30:21right field, left, center field, left, right field, Maritz catches McCarver,
- 1:30:28and Nelson Brow's on the mound, all the way. Jose Cardinal.
- 1:30:37He's going for two. Last time up, he's sacrifice. Curve ball, the ender, strike one.
- 1:30:44Cardinal will be followed by Dalton Jones. Jones has two hits, last two times up.
- 1:30:55I'm Peewee Reed. And Ken Coleman, as the ball hit out in the center field.
- 1:31:04First blood back underneath and takes it for out number two.
- 1:31:14Ken, I can't see the reason why this ball part could affect the red shot.
- 1:31:22No, I think it's a good ball part for this passing front because left and right center field,
- 1:31:28we have several men who can get the ball out. It's a good, honest, fair ball part.
- 1:31:32It's certainly a beautiful, beautiful play. We're hoping to have one like it in Boston one of these days, Peewee.
- 1:31:39I understand you are. Hope you do. Dalton Jones, back ball by Brow's in there for called strike one.
- 1:31:52What's that? On Dalton Jones' foul, looking down at McCarver's safety's head.
- 1:31:58Brow's a struck out four. Here's the hit. Back ball hit back through the middle out here.
- 1:32:05The center field may hit for Dalton Jones.
- 1:32:08This fellow looks like quite a hitter, Ken. He's always been a very smooth pointer.
- 1:32:15And when he's had the chance to play, he's done well.
- 1:32:18He's had some problems in the past, potentially.
- 1:32:21And this year he's gone in there at third base, Peewee, and he's done his job.
- 1:32:24And he may have just won it for a long time to come, the way he's gone at late.
- 1:32:30Now we see that Red Chainses, for the first time today, is going out to the mound to talk to Nelson Brow.
- 1:32:38No indication of any warm-up activity has yet. However, there may be.
- 1:32:43In any case, Cepeda, McCarver, Chainses, and Brow are having a conversation now at the mound,
- 1:32:50part of which undoubtedly is how they want to handle Cardiff's sense of fear and how they want to pitch to him.
- 1:32:57And the play down by a flank, Humont, is on his way out.
- 1:33:00This is the eighth inning, and with one out, the Red Sox have a runner at third base.
- 1:33:06The Cardinals are leading by a score of four to two, but the Red Sox have been chipping away
- 1:33:12as they come up with single runs in the sixth and seventh.
- 1:33:15The conference over, the airs is in, and here's Peewee.
- 1:33:18Nelson Brow would have liked to have kept that man off the first base and have his 50 leading off.
- 1:33:26The top half of the ninth inning. One flight here has been fired up.
- 1:33:31And he had a go at it, but he fouled straight back. What a cut he had himself.
- 1:33:37And did he swing that hard last year? No, he didn't.
- 1:33:42He actually, as you probably have heard, and many people have, I know, during this winter,
- 1:33:46as Charles said himself, he claimed like a fighter.
- 1:33:50Every day for 90 minutes he worked out as a health problem in Boston,
- 1:33:55and he had a trainer working with him, and he worked just like a fighter getting ready to fight.
- 1:34:00And he didn't put on any weight. He weighed about 180 pounds, but he's very, very strong,
- 1:34:05and he's got that whip-like motion now at the plate.
- 1:34:08He holds his hand high. Here's the pitch.
- 1:34:11He'll swim her out to Javier. He's up for the ball.
- 1:34:16He flips the ball over to Javier.
- 1:34:19He's got the ball for the Red Sox here in the top half of the eighth inning.
- 1:34:23And the score here is plus-tinted. It's the Cardinals 4 and the Red Sox 2.
- 1:34:29Herb Rock, out of the bottom half of the eighth inning, he had four hits.
- 1:34:34In the first game up at Fenway Park in Boston, of course, there was only one hit for second game.
- 1:34:42That was by Javier.
- 1:34:44As soon as he has six hits in the series, first pitch by Dan Olszewski hit out into right field.
- 1:34:49That ball may be trouble, but Reggie Smith will have it.
- 1:34:52And right center, Reggie Smith moves over and catches it.
- 1:34:56Ball was hit hard for Brock.
- 1:34:59Kind of a high-back ball. He's chopped down on it.
- 1:35:01Olszewski, kind of a turkey jerky kind of a fellow out there on the mound.
- 1:35:06Lots of arms and legs.
- 1:35:10Kirk Blood, he's up for his fourth time today. He's one of the three.
- 1:35:19And a base hit.
- 1:35:21The center fielder's first time up. There's a fast ball. It's too high.
- 1:35:25The ball won.
- 1:35:27Cardinals 4 runs on eight hits.
- 1:35:29Red Sox, two runs on seven hits.
- 1:35:34Olszewski shakes his head. He's ready. Here's the fifth.
- 1:35:38Flurrish takes it. In there for tall strike one.
- 1:35:45Mike Humon.
- 1:35:47Behind the plate.
- 1:35:49They jump hard.
- 1:35:51Elton Howard moves outside. Here's the curve ball.
- 1:35:54He's slapped it down. It's too high.
- 1:35:56Two balls in one strike.
- 1:35:57As Howard Howard walks over, he takes the ball.
- 1:36:06Never thought we'd have such a day as we've had today.
- 1:36:11Kind of a misty rain.
- 1:36:14All day at third game. There's the ball. Hit down to the third base for Dalton Jones.
- 1:36:17Up with it. Over to George Scott and that's all for Kirk Blood.
- 1:36:21So Dan Olszewski, he's high.
- 1:36:23The first hit man, the baby, brings up Roger Maersk.
- 1:36:27Roger Maersk wants the swing.
- 1:36:30Hitting the double play. First time up. Flat out to right field.
- 1:36:35And the third of these.
- 1:36:37Gotta face it.
- 1:36:39To right field and drove in a run.
- 1:36:41And as Ken Solja, as he serves, runs him in in the sphere.
- 1:36:45Drove in the only two runs. Cardinals Jack the first.
- 1:36:48And Olszewski first takes it in there for tall strike one.
- 1:36:50They say he drove them both in.
- 1:36:59A little rounder but they count it.
- 1:37:02There's a picture there for tall strike two.
- 1:37:05The important thing is to get that man in from third.
- 1:37:08That's what he did.
- 1:37:11On two, let's see what Olszewski will do with Maersk.
- 1:37:15No ball, two strikes. Howard, the kid that gives the sign.
- 1:37:18He moves outside.
- 1:37:20Little tap style down the first base line.
- 1:37:23Hicks Siffler, the coach at first base for the Cardinals, retrieves the ball.
- 1:37:29Here's the stunt of George Siffler.
- 1:37:33Many of you fans remember.
- 1:37:36The St. Louis Browns, one of the greatest hitters of all time.
- 1:37:41George Siffler, Roger Maersk, picks it up side, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:37:52Two runs, seven hits for the Red Sox, one error.
- 1:37:57Cardinals, full run, eight hits, nowhere. Roger Maersk, playing inside the second base, a little tap.
- 1:38:03After her, it's going to stop. Look at the ball, a little shaky, but you're not getting it.
- 1:38:15Well, here's what happens.
- 1:38:18Roger Maersk, side to side, gets a little tap, a perfect shot.
- 1:38:25Down the first base line, George shot up with the ball.
- 1:38:28Oh, this, he over the first, but they can't get it.
- 1:38:33So, it's a base hit for Roger.
- 1:38:36He's second ahead of the game.
- 1:38:42The big ball, he still hasn't had a hit for series, oh, for three to go.
- 1:38:50Two away.
- 1:38:52Olsinski, looks over fast, here's the pitch.
- 1:38:55Oh, hit out into that field, Cardinals going way back, way back.
- 1:39:00Off of the wall, Cardinals, up with the ball.
- 1:39:03Here comes Roger Maersk, and it's going to Cepeda, hitting the second with the double.
- 1:39:25Well, Orlando Cepeda gets his first hit in the series, he was all for ten.
- 1:39:34It was a time drive out off the right field wall, right around that three-eighty-six foot side.
- 1:39:42Well, a double, that's it, Roger Maersk's first, next to the score, five to two, and save the Cardinals over the red card.
- 1:39:56Remember, fans, Ken Coleman and I will be right back here tomorrow for the fourth game of the World Series between the Cardinals and the Red Cards.
- 1:40:08Let's hope that you can be with us.
- 1:40:12We'll be looking forward to the friends for tomorrow's game and also the game Monday.
- 1:40:17MacArthur, runner on his second base, makes a hit in MacArthur.
- 1:40:23He's tacked it over a play for fifty, takes too much time, he's back Saturday.
- 1:40:28Youmuck comes out, takes the third over home plate.
- 1:40:33The Cardinals one for three.
- 1:40:38Otsiski looks back at Cepeda's second.
- 1:40:42Here's the pitch, that ball hit out to MacArthur.
- 1:40:46Otsiski's center of stretch flips the ball over the shot, and that's all for the Cardinals, that's all for the Cardinals here.
- 1:40:52The bottom half of the eighth inning was that one run, though.
- 1:40:54The Cardinals now lead by a score of six to two, with a lot of power in the right center and left center.
- 1:41:04And dead center, it's four fourteen dead center.
- 1:41:07Nelson Brown, foul back straight back, but you're a good fast ball.
- 1:41:13Can't remain.
- 1:41:15O-one-two, looks like Brown.
- 1:41:18Now to seek that fast ball by Scott.
- 1:41:24How does that feel, fifty, with a count?
- 1:41:27No ball for two strikes, like a bad pitch.
- 1:41:31Maybe you thought George Scott.
- 1:41:33Here's the pitch, curve ball, low and outside.
- 1:41:36One ball and two strikes.
- 1:41:39Perfect pitch on two, not so, makes the pitch so bad that maybe we're not going to offer.
- 1:41:48Keep it around that straight.
- 1:41:51Maybe two or three inches outside, two or three inches inside.
- 1:41:55Here's the pitch, one and two, curve ball, down two, down and in third, a long throw over to Cepeda.
- 1:42:02That's all for George Scott.
- 1:42:04The infield, flips that ball around.
- 1:42:07Brings up Reggie Smith.
- 1:42:11Reggie Smith, hit a home run his last time.
- 1:42:18He has good speed, he led the club in solar base, he has a terrific arm.
- 1:42:24He's super green today.
- 1:42:27Got to face it into the right, hit a home run to right field.
- 1:42:31He led the international league in hitting in nineteen sixty-six.
- 1:42:35This fellow could be a real fine one.
- 1:42:39He can do it all.
- 1:42:41Nelson Brow, first pitch going, back ball in there for call strike one.
- 1:42:45You'll see this happen quite often, right at part of the game.
- 1:42:51Consider taking that first pitch, some managers will make you take it.
- 1:42:56Give that pitcher a chance to pitch, maybe he'll get wild.
- 1:42:59Hit back, one ball to one strike.
- 1:43:05Sometimes when he releases that ball, and a ball's way over George's first pitch.
- 1:43:12Pretty hard not to follow through and release that ball with something on it.
- 1:43:20That's falling a little bit towards first pitch.
- 1:43:23Most of them do.
- 1:43:24Back ball, inside the corner, and that's a call strike two.
- 1:43:30He has something on that one.
- 1:43:32One ball, two strikes.
- 1:43:34It's one away, we're in the top half of ninth inning.
- 1:43:37It's the last dash for the Red Sox, as they trail by four or five to two.
- 1:43:43Five runs, hit it.
- 1:43:45No air for the Cardinals.
- 1:43:47Two runs, seven hits and one air for the Red Sox.
- 1:43:50One ball, two strikes on Reggie Smith.
- 1:43:54Nelson Brown, he's ready.
- 1:43:56Here's the pitch.
- 1:43:58Back ball, it pops up, McAlbert May, he has a chance, going back in the stands.
- 1:44:03So the Calvert May, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:44:07It's hard to ball as far back as I can remember.
- 1:44:14Always got a club that likes to run.
- 1:44:17That goes back to the early 40s when I first came to the league.
- 1:44:21That was like Enid Flauder, Enid Flauder, Terry Mora, Ralph Key, Dan Mugell, Walter Kupfer, the catcher.
- 1:44:36He has very good speed, hold on like McArthur.
- 1:44:40Nelson Brown, one and two picks for Reggie Smith.
- 1:44:43Back ball, just missed inside.
- 1:44:44Makes you count two and three.
- 1:44:52And a great shortstop.
- 1:44:54He played here at the Cardinals, his career and a parallel of my career.
- 1:45:02Played against teams in the 39th Junior World Series at Rochester.
- 1:45:06And he came up to Cardinals, party man, most of you fans will remember.
- 1:45:10Two balls, two strikes on Reggie Smith.
- 1:45:14Inside, ball three.
- 1:45:19Brown gets on top of Reggie Smith.
- 1:45:22But now, he's come back, makes the count three and two.
- 1:45:26Bobby Doerr is hosting a first save for the Red Sox.
- 1:45:30Ed Sapkowski is hosting a third.
- 1:45:33Three and two is the count on Reggie Smith.
- 1:45:36As a real close stance left-handed, he's a quick hitter.
- 1:45:43Right-handed, batting right-handed, he's wide open.
- 1:45:47Here's the three and two pick.
- 1:45:49He pops it up, McArthur almost knocks Reggie Smith down.
- 1:45:53On the up part, Carl Reggie Smith out.
- 1:45:56McArthur going for the ball, he bumps into Reggie Smith.
- 1:46:02Of course, the catcher has the right of way.
- 1:46:06Reggie Smith bumps back into him.
- 1:46:11And what he did, the umpire, like too much, called it off.
- 1:46:20And he did it.
- 1:46:27McArthur was a set-up for the put-up.
- 1:46:29It brings up Jerry Abed.
- 1:46:32The big foe, Cepeda, down at first base, he came in and sketched up this through Reggie Smith.
- 1:46:390 for 3 is there for his fifth and ball one.
- 1:46:44The last chance, the last shot for the Red Sox, with a top half to nine sitting, they trail by the two.
- 1:46:53All the way, Nelson Brow for the cardinal.
- 1:46:56Here's the pitch. A jar is taken in there, ball side one, one ball and one shot.
- 1:47:12It really turned out to be a beautiful day, good old Sadler today.
- 1:47:18I hope it's the same type of day tomorrow.
- 1:47:20The one and one pitch inside, ball two.
- 1:47:26Two balls, one strike on Nelson Brow during eight there.
- 1:47:31Nelson Brow, in 65, started two games for the cardinals.
- 1:47:36He played it, then he started 17 and 66.
- 1:47:41Started 14.
- 1:47:44In 67.
- 1:47:53Outside, ball through, three balls and one strike.
- 1:47:57On Jerry Abed, he checks with his coach at third base, Khabarovsky.
- 1:48:03Let's see if he'll be taking or flinging away.
- 1:48:08He's running, doesn't mean too much here. He has to get on to keep the hopes alive.
- 1:48:17Here's the pitch. He's taking all the way, it's in there for called strike two.
- 1:48:23Three and two on Jerry Abed, two ways. Top half to nine sitting.
- 1:48:30Cardinal five, Red Sox two.
- 1:48:34Third game for the World Series, they're all even up going into today.
- 1:48:40Cardinals having a chance going out in games three to one after the day.
- 1:48:46They can hold it, please.
- 1:48:49Nelson Brow, he's ready, here's the three and two pitch.
- 1:48:52The ball is topped up, that's it for all of it.
- 1:48:55Five-seven called for it, he's got it in his face and takes it through out of number two.
- 1:48:59That's all, a joyous day.
- 1:49:01And that's all for the Red Sox in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 1:49:06The final score, the Cardinals five and the Red Sox two.
- 1:49:11We'll be back in just a minute with a complete wrap-up of today's game.
- 1:49:16Very shortly we're going down to the field where Tony Kuback is ready to interview Cardinal manager, Russ Chandy, and possibly Dan Muegel.
- 1:49:26As soon as we get word from Tony, we'll be sending it on down.
- 1:49:28The total's on the game, St. Louis five, 10 and 0, Boston two, seven and one.
- 1:49:35Down, down to Tony Kuback.
- 1:49:37Thank you, sir, God. You were talking to the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, Red Sox, is that correct?
- 1:49:42Any thoughts in your mind of just staying right home here in St. Louis and not going back to Boston?
- 1:49:46Well, we'd like to just stay right here, but you never know.
- 1:49:50We've got to plan a tough club over there and we'll battle them all the way.
- 1:49:53Maybe we'll go back game and we won't, but they have a good ball club.
- 1:49:56They have a good ball club and it's pretty hard to win three in a row.
- 1:50:00We have done it a number of times this year and won five in a row and six in a row. Maybe we can do it again.
- 1:50:05That has been a little indefinite as far as the people upstairs.
- 1:50:08Who is going to be your starting pitcher tomorrow? Will it be Gibson?
- 1:50:11Yeah, I announced it before the game that Gibson would be the pitcher and the young boy, the big tall left-hander, will pitch Monday, definitely.
- 1:50:18That's Carlson. That's right.
- 1:50:20Bet you were glad to see Orlando Coteta finally come out of it with a long double right center field.
- 1:50:24Yes, he's been in a slump now for quite some time before the season ended, but the past three or four days before the season was over, he was swinging a bat better.
- 1:50:35He's been swinging a bat real good since the series started.
- 1:50:38He just hadn't connected with the ball and he just can't hold a man like that down too long.
- 1:50:43I think he's going to go and take it right now after that base that he got.
- 1:50:46Red in the very first inning, Nelson Biles at Coggerson. He with a good ball. There was a big discussion behind home plate.
- 1:50:51The three of you picked Williams, Frank Umont, the umpire, the first and south. What was it all about?
- 1:50:57Well, Williams thought that Biles was throwing at him and I said he wasn't throwing at him.
- 1:51:03And Yvonne said that he was going to handle it himself. I said, well, that's okay with me, but I just want to let you know he wasn't throwing at him.
- 1:51:09I said that if he had popped off on the paper like some guys did, that they were going to knock everybody down, then I would say he was throwing at him.
- 1:51:17But none of us ever said anything in the paper that we were going to knock anybody down or do this or that like a couple of the pitchers had said.
- 1:51:24So I just said that he wasn't throwing at him.
- 1:51:27Red, you've seen the Red Sox and you of course have the scouting reports, but now you've played them three ball games. You're up 2-1.
- 1:51:32What have you noticed about the Red Sox that was not in your scouting reports?
- 1:51:36Well, the scouting reports are just about the same. When you go over these scouting reports, they're great.
- 1:51:42You get ideas from them. Some pitchers pitch different, you know.
- 1:51:47Your pitcher has to pitch his own game and that's the way we're going to do it from here.
- 1:51:52The scouting reports, they give you the weakness of the other ball club and it's great to have scouting reports, but Riles has good control.
- 1:52:01It depends on the pitcher. If he has good control, you know that's going to be hard to hit, especially if they've got stuff on them.
- 1:52:06Red and the key to the Red Sox seems to be to stop your sense and that's your dip.
- 1:52:09Congratulations so much. We'll see you out here tomorrow. Thank you, sir.
- 1:52:13Thank you, Red Chains. We'll now back up to first scouting.
- 1:52:16Alright. And here in the radio booth, this is Ken Coleman and we'll continue with our wrap up in one minute.
- 1:52:22I was a little surprised to hear what Red Chains did down stairs a while ago. I thought maybe if they won this game today, they would start the big left-handed call.
- 1:52:44I understand now that they're going to go with Bob Gibson tomorrow.
- 1:52:46Yes, that was a rather surprising move according to all the reports that we have heard up to this time because Red has been mentioning that he would like to get a left-hander in this, particularly with people like this Renskeen Jones providing a lot of the Red Sox power.
- 1:53:02I think one thing, Ken, that kind of hurts the Red Sox a little bit, they don't have real good left-hander-fifteen. They have a fellow named Sparky Lowers, but he does have a little arm trouble, doesn't he?
- 1:53:16Yes, Sparky has arm trouble and is not available. In fact, the only stuff available to us at the moment is young Ken Brett who just turned 19 and has had only two winnings of major league ball behind him after working at Fitzfield this year.
- 1:53:30So that could be a problem. I want to get back just for a moment here to the totals on today's ball game.
- 1:53:37St. Louis winning it 5-2, home runs were hit by Mike Shannon of St. Louis, a two-run job in the second inning.
- 1:53:45And Reggie Smith had won for the Red Sox in the seventh inning.
- 1:53:49Dalvin Jones had the three hits and four tries for Boston. Lou Brock had a pair of hits, Roger Maris had two, and Shannon had a pair for St. Louis.
- 1:54:00So it was quite a ball game here in the third game of the World Series.
- 1:54:04Played before the largest crowd ever at First Memorial Stadium, 54,575 fans were on hand to watch this one.
- 1:54:14And tomorrow, as we mentioned, it will be Bob Gittsons working for the Singler's Cardinals and Jose Santiago will be on the mound for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:54:25The Cardinals jumped out very quickly in this game when Brock led off the game by whacking a triple into the alley out in left center field and Flutt singled him home.
- 1:54:35So right away they had a one-to-nothing lead.
- 1:54:37Then in the second inning, McArthur led off with a single and Shannon came up with his home run.
- 1:54:44They picked up more in the sixth inning on a punt by Brock.
- 1:54:49When Zang tried to pick him off first, he threw wildly fast shots and Brock got all the way around the third where Maris singled him home.
- 1:54:58And in the eighth inning, Maris got a check swing single down the first base side.
- 1:55:02And Cepeda broke the ice for himself in the World Series by slamming a double off the wall in right center to send home the fifth Cardinal run.
- 1:55:11As Boston was concerned in the scoring column here today, their first run came when Mike Andrews had a yet-to-get hitting in the sixth inning with sacrifice to second and scored on Joan Singles.
- 1:55:24And Smith provided the other run with the home run.
- 1:55:27So Pee-wee, that's pretty much the story on this ball game today.
- 1:55:34And the fans now are starting to file out and we have been, as we have mentioned a number of times during the broadcast, very fortunate in terms of weather.
- 1:55:44Because when you and I get up this morning, I know that we had some doubts, a lot of doubts about what the situation would be weather-wise.
- 1:55:52But it held off and now we might catch some rain tonight and have it clear tomorrow.
- 1:55:57Well it certainly did turn out to be a nice game.
- 1:56:00And thanks, John, to Sharp right now for the Red Sox.
- 1:56:03But I've said, and I've seen this ball club, and Maris knows you've seen them a lot more than I have, that when you get the bat ready to counter the Red Sox ball club out, this is when they bounce back.
- 1:56:13And they're a real pressure ball club.
- 1:56:15They're cocky.
- 1:56:16They're cocky not to the extent where you would just like a ball club, but they're very competent.
- 1:56:23And that's good.
- 1:56:25Well, you know, I think a good example was the last week of the season when they lost two games in the middle of the week to the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:56:31And then they had the Minnesota Twins come into town, a team that had beaten them 11 times already in 16 meetings.
- 1:56:39They had to win the two games at the end of the season with the Twins no matter what anybody else might do.
- 1:56:43And they were able to do it.
- 1:56:46So it's that kind of a ball club.
- 1:56:48And we were discussing it last night, some of us, and Tony Kupac included.
- 1:56:53And he said the interesting thing about World Series competition, and you've played in seven of them, T.Rico, you might be able to bear this out or not.
- 1:57:01But Tony said the more World Series you're in, the more you get to realize what it's all about and the more pressure you feel.
- 1:57:08When you're a youngster in it and you've never been in it before, maybe it doesn't bother you quite as much because you're just kind of thrilled about being there and it doesn't quite hit you so much.
- 1:57:19How do you feel about that?
- 1:57:21Well, I discussed that a little bit with Tony today, and he said that I was talking about that.
- 1:57:26I don't agree with him, but I told him so.
- 1:57:27Because playing in a World Series is always kind of nerve-wracking to me, Ken, and I played one when I was about 20 or 21 my first year in 1941.
- 1:57:39And I played one in my career rather late.
- 1:57:42But it's a great thrill just to be in the World Series, but I think that I felt the pressure in every game and every series.
- 1:57:51I don't care whether I was young or whether I was old, but once the game started, I believe I lost it.
- 1:57:57Well, I think that would be very understandable, and I suppose a veteran might lose it a little earlier than a newcomer.
- 1:58:05But I suppose, again, you get down to a matter of the makeup of the individual and how he reacts to it.
- 1:58:11That's true.
- 1:58:13One of those things.
- 1:58:14Right now, we'll have the final totals for you once again in just one minute.
- 1:58:24You know, most of the time, I guess we get another look at Bob Gibson tomorrow, and if I ever saw a pitcher that looked more overpine than he did in that first game up there, Boston, I can't remember when.
- 1:58:39He's not too much of a curveball pitcher, but he just keeps firing the ball hard.
- 1:58:46There's not much of a man in him.
- 1:58:48Well, everybody on the Red Sox ball club team was very, very much impressed with him.
- 1:58:52For most of them, it was the first time they'd seen Bob Gibson, of course, and they were very much impressed.
- 1:58:59The question I would ask you is, for a fellow who is, as they say, a power pitcher to come back after so brief a time, is he going to be able to throw that hard again tomorrow?
- 1:59:13Well, they say, Ken, I haven't seen that much of him, Ken.
- 1:59:16And another thing, as you said, they had never seen Bob Gibson before, and the second time around, it may be a little bit more helpful to them.
- 1:59:26They may not be so hard to find, and it should be a real interesting ballgame.
- 1:59:33But I don't think a power pitcher has to come back that fast with maybe those tough odds.
- 1:59:39Well, it might be. Now, Jose Santiago, of course, he has been in some clutch ballgames down the stretch for the Red Sox, and he'll get the nod tomorrow for Boston, with Jim Launborg slated to work here on Monday.
- 1:59:52And Santiago, in the early stages of the first World Series game, had trouble with his breaking stuff.
- 2:00:00He couldn't keep it down, and he has got to be able to keep it down in order to be effective.
- 2:00:05And he's had to get grooved after a while, and it's very possible that he'll be able to come up with a strong performance again.
- 2:00:12One of the things that should not be overlooked about today's game, I thought, Sewe, from the Red Sox's standpoint, was the drop turned in by Gary Wazlowski, who came in and took three perfect innings, setting down nine men in a row.
