- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Cover 4.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: If you're a Section 4 football fan, this is your podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I'm Coach Smith, your host.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Buckle your chin strap, put your mouthpiece in, and tie your cleats in double knots.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Welcome to week six, Games of the Week.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Today I will analyze one key Division II matchup and highlight two cover four honorable mention games of the week.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And during the Ask Coach Smith segment, I will explain why a field goal attempt should be treated like a punt.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And now on to our game of the week.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: The Horseheads Blue Raiders, currently ranked New York State Honorable Mention, travel east to take on the Vestal Golden Bears Friday evening, October 18th at 7 p.m.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: at Dick Hoover Stadium in Vestal, New York.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: This is a rematch of last season's Class A Championship, won by Vestel 40-14.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Vestel also beat Horseheads twice last season.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And this is Vestel's second of three straight collisions in Division II.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: This will be Vestel's toughest divisional opponent, and the winner should have the inside track to the number one playoff seat.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: In 2022, the Section 4 Class A Division Championship, Vestel lost to Unanicott 14-30, and in 2021, Horseheads lost to UE 0-34.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So you can see Horseheads and Vestel have been right there knocking at the door each of the last few years.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: The common opponents for Vestel and Horseheads is the Elmire Express.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Vestel lost to Elmira 21 to 43, and horseheads beat Elmira handily 42 to 6.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Vestel comes into this game 3-3 and 1-0 in the division, and they beat Binghamton last week 49 to 12.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: They've scored 186 points and allowed 170.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: That's a difference of plus 16.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And Vestel is hoping good things come in threes since this is the second of three divisional games in a row.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Win or lose, all of Vestel's games have been lopsided.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: The average score difference has been 31 points.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: I don't believe this game will be that lopsided.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: I think it's going to be much closer than that.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Some student athletes to watch for Vestel, our quarterback Josh Queller, who completes 67% of his passes for an average of 14.2 yards per completion, and he has a total of 909 yards this season so far.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: He averages 152 yards passing a game and 1.3 TDs per game.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: His main target is wide receiver JT Gannon, who is currently ranked number four in New York State as a receiver.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: He averages 112 yards per game and 20 yards per catch.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And one not so good statistic is Josh Gannon or JT Gannon, I'm sorry, has 7.7 tackles per game.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: That's not good for somebody that plays in the secondary on defense.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Although he has a strong safety and they tend to play a little bit closer to the line of scrimmage, you want to reduce that number and have your uh student athletes up front, your front seven, be making those tackles.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Another student athlete for Vestal is their workhorse running back, Julian Adams.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: He's also a kick returner and a defensive back.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: He averages 83 yards rushing per game and leads the team with eight touchdowns.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Caden Kitchen is a running back and linebacker is also another student athlete to pay particular attention to.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Horseheads comes into this game 4-2, and this will be their first division game.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: They beat Corning last week 35 to 14.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: They scored 209 points and only given up 96.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: That's a difference of plus 113.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: So that tells you they've got they can score a lot of points and they have a stellar defense that can stop a lot of people.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So that's going to be a real challenge for Bessel.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Some student athletes for Horseheads to Watch are quarterback Dom Cardinelli, running back Lucas Mosier, running back Bryce Thomas, and also running back Jackson Burkhart.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Keys to the game always begin with football fundamentals, blocking, tackling, and controlling the line of scrimmage.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: To win, you must run the ball and stop the run.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: These teams are mere images of each other.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Both can run the ball, throw the ball, and play defense at a high level.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: This has the feeling of a playoff game, although neither team is playing for the playoffs since all four Division II teams make the playoffs.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: This game is all about seeding and home field advantage.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Vestal had a first round bye last season because there were three teams in Division II.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Since there are four teams this season, there will be no buy.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Be sure to let your family and friends know about their options to watch the Vestal Golden Bears football game.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: You can do that via fan.huddle.com.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: That's fan.hudl.com on your computer and the Huddle Fan app on your smartphone.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Whether you are in attendance or watching from anywhere around the world, in addition to watching all the game action, you will have access to drone video footage, instant replay, coaches' live interviews from our Silent Reporter, and more.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: The first is a Class C division game, often referred to as the Hogan Bowl, and that will be Schnangle Forks traveling to Windsor to take on the Black Knights.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Last season, Windsor not only won the Hogan Bowl on Schnangle Forks home field, they shut them out.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Both football communities are acutely aware of this recent history.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: I don't like to predict games, but this is one game I always get right.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: I believe the winner will be the team led by Coach Hogan.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: The second game is a non-divisional game, and that's Waverly at Tyoga.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: These are the two Section 4 2023 New York State champions.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Their game last season was historic to say the least.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: It took two days and overtime before Tyoga was declared the winner.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I know Waverly has had this game circled since the schedule came out, and given the way the season has gone for both teams, I give the nod to the Wolverines in this game.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: I saw a long field goal attempt, and the ball was well short and never crossed the gold line.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: The defensive team was given the ball where it came to rest.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: I thought the defensive team gets the ball at the spot the field goal was attempted from.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Please explain.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: In high school football, a field goal attempt that doesn't make the end zone is the same as a punt.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: All rules for a punt apply.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: If the ball crossed the goal line, the ball is dead and it's a touchback.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: In high school football, a field goal attempt is treated like a punt.
