- 0:00Speaker 1: Tennis, and he won. It's one more thing.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I'm one more thing.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I always enjoyed tennis, but.
- 0:11Speaker 3: I couldn't say it much because I would always get
- 0:14Speaker 3: tendonitis in what oh, as I recall my elbow and wrist. Yeah,
- 0:21Speaker 3: as I always said of my sports career, I got
- 0:23Speaker 3: my dad's talent, my mom's tendons. I get tendonitis like
- 0:27Speaker 3: putting butter on bread.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Haha. I need a supplement, probably turmeric. I'll tell you
- 0:33Speaker 1: who doesn't get tendonitis, and we'll get back to tennis
- 0:35Speaker 1: in the second. That guy who climbed that building in
- 0:39Speaker 1: Taiwan over the weekend, if you didn't watch that, God,
- 0:42Speaker 1: what a physical specimen that dude is. So I mentioned
- 0:45Speaker 1: on the radio show. I didn't know this. It was
- 0:47Speaker 1: a Netflix live special that was two hours long of
- 0:51Speaker 1: him climbing that building. And I wish I'd have known
- 0:53Speaker 1: it was on because I would have watched it with
- 0:55Speaker 1: great anticipation because you know, there was certainly a chance
- 0:58Speaker 1: he falls, and there were I don't know how many
- 1:01Speaker 1: thousands of people gathered around the bottom of that building
- 1:04Speaker 1: watching it live and like oohing and awing and shrieking
- 1:08Speaker 1: as he you know, swung around and stepped here and
- 1:11Speaker 1: stumbled there and everything as he went up that damn
- 1:13Speaker 1: building in my hands are sweating actually just talking about it.
- 1:16Speaker 3: And Katie and I had the same reaction. You should
- 1:19Speaker 3: have watched it live because he might have fallen. Wait,
- 1:22Speaker 3: what would have it not the triumph of the human spirit? Well,
- 1:25Speaker 3: but it would have been more courage, the strengths. You
- 1:28Speaker 3: wanted him to splatter.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Come on, No, I didn't want him to spider, But
- 1:31Speaker 1: wouldn't have been more exciting to not know the result
- 1:33Speaker 1: of whether or not he could get up there or
- 1:34Speaker 1: not or just have to quit or run out of gas.
- 1:37Speaker 1: One of the concerns it's tough to watch. I mean,
- 1:39Speaker 1: like really really tough. It's tough to watch knowing he
- 1:42Speaker 1: makes it. So. My son and I watched it last night.
- 1:44Speaker 1: It's on Netflix, and it's a man in four K
- 1:47Speaker 1: on an eighty inch television. It's like standing next to
- 1:50Speaker 1: a guy hanging off a building and uh uh we
- 1:55Speaker 1: kept like shrieking, just sitting out on the couch, ah
- 2:00Speaker 1: wing his leg up and like barely grip some tiny
- 2:03Speaker 1: little ledge with his hand and me dangling there. Oh
- 2:07Speaker 1: my god, have you ever.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Seen somebody scale a building like in real life, I
- 2:12Speaker 2: have not.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Oh God.
- 2:14Speaker 2: When I was working in San Francisco, there was this
- 2:16Speaker 2: guy that I believe you went by the Pro life
- 2:19Speaker 2: Spider Man or.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 2:21Speaker 2: This is back in like I don't know, twenty to
- 2:24Speaker 2: twenty nineteen or something. He like, this dude just scaled
- 2:28Speaker 2: the Salesforce building and they had to shut down all
- 2:31Speaker 2: the surrounding streets because it wasn't an organized event. But
- 2:34Speaker 2: I'm driving towards the bridge and I look up, H'm like,
- 2:35Speaker 2: is that a person?
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah? These people are nuts.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And you said during the radio show that the guy's
- 2:43Speaker 3: fear center of his brain doesn't function like normal human beings.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, so I didn't watch solo climb or whatever it's
- 2:48Speaker 1: about when he climbed. Uh, what's the thing here in
- 2:51Speaker 1: the el Kep tag? Yeah, in California. The Academy award
- 2:56Speaker 1: didn't it for a Yeah? Yeah, what was supposed to
- 2:58Speaker 1: be really really great and interesting. But its in that
- 3:00Speaker 1: documentary that they have studied the brain half dome doesn't
- 3:03Speaker 1: matter whichever. Uh, the fear part of his brain doesn't
- 3:07Speaker 1: light up, It just doesn't work. And he looks like that.
- 3:10Speaker 1: He looks checked out. Actually, the show is interesting because
- 3:13Speaker 1: it just starts with him and his wife sitting in
- 3:14Speaker 1: a van parked at the corner of the building talking
- 3:18Speaker 1: and he's like having lunch or whatever and discussing things
- 3:20Speaker 1: what they're gonna do, and say, okay, let me get going.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And he sits there next to the building and changes shoes.
- 3:26Speaker 1: He takes off his socks and shoes and puts on
- 3:28Speaker 1: these special climbing shoes and gets his little bucket of
- 3:31Speaker 1: chalk that he dips his hands in, puts it around
- 3:33Speaker 1: his waist and starts climbing up the building.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Holy smokes, he did l Cappy Tana as a free soulo.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Holy whoa. But you can tell he's
- 3:43Speaker 1: got no fear. I mean he's just like so bored.
- 3:47Speaker 1: He looks like somebody's sitting in a meeting.
- 3:49Speaker 3: So it's like I found out that people are amazed
- 3:55Speaker 3: and astounded that I can walk to my mailbox and back.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah, right right.
- 4:01Speaker 3: So I'd think, all right, I'm gonna hey, honey, I
- 4:03Speaker 3: gotta go walk to the mailbox and back.
- 4:05Speaker 1: There's like five thousand people out front, so.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I say, hey, hey, everybody, all right, I'm ready to go,
- 4:09Speaker 3: I put on my mailbox walking shoes and I set
- 4:12Speaker 3: off all the way up the driveway, well that all
- 4:15Speaker 3: the way back, and people are like, oh my God
- 4:17Speaker 3: to him.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Emotionally. Yeah, the physical part though, of it would be
- 4:20Speaker 1: incredibly difficult. So the free solo stuff. I knew a
- 4:24Speaker 1: guy who was a drummer in the band I was in,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and he was into that sort of stuff. In the
- 4:27Speaker 1: amount of practice he would do one arm hangs, one
- 4:32Speaker 1: hand hangs. You do a lot of that just to
- 4:33Speaker 1: strengthen the muscles and your fingers and your wrists and
- 4:36Speaker 1: your fore arms and your everything else. And this guy
- 4:40Speaker 1: is like, his hands are huge, and he just looks
- 4:43Speaker 1: like muscle. But they're talking about how exhausted he would
- 4:46Speaker 1: be getting as he gets to the top. And if
- 4:48Speaker 1: you watch the videos over the weekend, you saw looked
- 4:50Speaker 1: like the hardest part was at the end when he
- 4:53Speaker 1: had to swing himself up over those ledges and when
- 4:55Speaker 1: you'd just be so worn out. But I can't even
- 4:59Speaker 1: imagine couple of little kids and his darling wife and him,
- 5:04Speaker 1: you know, both agreed that this was a good idea.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I imagine he just said, look, I can do this.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I'm not going to fall. We're going to be set
- 5:10Speaker 1: for life, you know, a couple more of these climbs,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and we're we're set, you, me and the kids. And no,
- 5:16Speaker 1: was he.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Compensated for this? Was it? Was it for the purpose
- 5:20Speaker 3: of oh, the Netflix show. I'm sure the sorry duh, yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 3: the Netflix show. I'd be shocked if he didn't make millions.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Off of this.
- 5:27Speaker 2: No, he he Actually there was an article saying that
- 5:30Speaker 2: if you compare it to like pro sports, he made
- 5:32Speaker 2: an embarrassing amount. It was somewhere in the mid six figures.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Is what they He said, Oh, really, but there had
- 5:38Speaker 1: to be more to it than that, because I noticed
- 5:40Speaker 1: I said this to my son when he because why
- 5:43Speaker 1: didn't he just put his shoes on a van? The
- 5:44Speaker 1: fact that he walked over and sat down and they
- 5:46Speaker 1: had a big shot of the shoes he was putting on.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I just I think he had a number of different
- 5:50Speaker 1: sponsors involved, product placement and that sort of How much
- 5:54Speaker 1: money he made, I don't know. He's definitely you know,
- 5:58Speaker 1: his name recognition has gone way up. So if he
- 6:00Speaker 1: does public speaking someday or you know, he's going to
- 6:03Speaker 1: be on a Super Bowl commercial for and a person
- 6:05Speaker 1: climb in a building will make you sweat, not if
- 6:08Speaker 1: I have you know whatever.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Well, I'm doing the motivational circuit thing. Are you afraid of?
- 6:13Speaker 3: You know, achieving at work? Follow my method climb? Which
- 6:17Speaker 3: is can i've limit imagine motivate? And what else should
- 6:25Speaker 3: be exactly? Which all of this has been but I've
- 6:29Speaker 3: already been paid runs out the back.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Here's how you do it. He'd just be brain born
- 6:35Speaker 1: with a part of your brain that doesn't function. It's crazy.
- 6:38Speaker 2: The Tony Robbins people that are paying ninety nine dollars
- 6:41Speaker 2: a month for the chatbot.
- 6:42Speaker 1: He could have one of those two yeah, oh yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but that's some show to watch. I wish more of
- 6:47Speaker 1: you would watch it and get back to me if
- 6:49Speaker 1: you reacted the way my son and I did. My
- 6:50Speaker 1: son couldn't watch and our hands are sweating and we
- 6:53Speaker 1: kept yelling yah something.
- 6:56Speaker 3: What does a guy like that do when his careers
- 6:58Speaker 3: kind of run out? Run out the string? Doesn't he
- 7:01Speaker 3: go like go to birthday parties. I'll climb the side
- 7:04Speaker 3: of your house for a hundred bucks a threat. I'm
- 7:11Speaker 3: opening up a new pet store here on Main Street.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Would you climb up the side of it?
- 7:15Speaker 1: Hey for for beer money, I'll get up on top
- 7:17Speaker 1: of your car. I'm not interested. Come on, just I'll
- 7:20Speaker 1: just jump up there like a squeegee guy, but a climber,
- 7:24Speaker 1: just like yeah, half assed grocery store openings. All right, Now,
- 7:28Speaker 1: what's the guy's name? We should know? His name is
- 7:30Speaker 1: like the greatest.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Alex Honald, Alex Honnold, He's the greatest climber on earth.
- 7:35Speaker 3: We've got Alex Honald, who's going to climb the side
- 7:38Speaker 3: of the new Bigley Wiggly here right? Which o the
- 7:41Speaker 3: grand day great folks now head on end? Twenty percent
- 7:46Speaker 3: off produce today only, thanks for coming. Right. It was
- 7:50Speaker 3: like we we worked with some pet food guys who
- 7:54Speaker 3: are really good guys. Uh, but the one guy was
- 7:56Speaker 3: fascinated by that bulldog who could skateboard, and he had
- 8:01Speaker 3: a bulldog that he was trying.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He bought a bulldog Katie. Yes, this guy, so there's
- 8:04Speaker 1: a bulldog. Do you know the skateboarding bulldog? Have you
- 8:06Speaker 1: ever come across it? Yeah? It's very popular in California
- 8:08Speaker 1: marcials and it makes I think three hundred thousand dollars
- 8:10Speaker 1: a year and travels around an RV and goes to openings,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and so this friend of ours, who were in doing
- 8:15Speaker 1: dorsements for bought a bulldog specifically to train it because
- 8:19Speaker 1: he thought, I want to get in on this. Spent
- 8:20Speaker 1: lots of time trying.
- 8:21Speaker 3: To way longer cut that other bulldog to give you
- 8:25Speaker 3: twenty five percent off.
- 8:26Speaker 1: He is disappointed and never learned to skateboard. Could play
- 8:28Speaker 1: the piano beautifully, but could not skateboard. Oh gives us shit.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Any who. I was told he was listening to the
- 8:39Speaker 1: group Tool the whole time. He was Yeah, he had
- 8:42Speaker 1: earbuds in digging music. Oh really, yeah, I thoughtually meant
- 8:46Speaker 1: the bulldog. Michael, you got to bring this like talking
- 8:48Speaker 1: to my wife. What are you talking about? We're talking
- 8:51Speaker 1: about the bulldog. Yeah, that was like that was yesterday.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Now we're back to the guy climbing the building. He
- 8:57Speaker 1: had earbudget, he had Tool, and he likes heavy metal
- 8:59Speaker 1: music and he's listening to a tool. He was also miked,
- 9:02Speaker 1: so he could talk every once in a while and say, yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 1: it's a wind you're up here. And I thought it
- 9:05Speaker 1: would be or whatever. And everybody in the building knew
- 9:08Speaker 1: he was going to climb it, and they were there
- 9:10Speaker 1: to get pictures and so like every little new ledge
- 9:13Speaker 1: was a window with somebody like six inches from his
- 9:16Speaker 1: face waving and he'd wave back.
- 9:19Speaker 2: How awful would you feel if you startled him and
- 9:21Speaker 2: he jumped and let go and then that was the end.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Probably shouldn't have startled him. Okay, So why did I say?
- 9:30Speaker 1: Why did I say, tennis anyone? It's about exercise. I'll
- 9:34Speaker 1: go through this fast. Since we talked so much about
- 9:36Speaker 1: the climber, but I didn't think that was kind of interesting.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So much information has out come out in the last
- 9:40Speaker 1: couple of years about exercise and longevity and what it
- 9:44Speaker 1: does to your brain and your body. If it seems,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I mean, it makes sense if you lead your body
- 9:51Speaker 1: to believe and your brain to believe that it's they're
- 9:53Speaker 1: still needed, they still function. But if you lead them
- 9:57Speaker 1: to believe that don't really need you any more brain
- 9:59Speaker 1: or body, they atrophy fast. Oh that is so interesting.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I've had a couple of friends who worked into you know,
- 10:08Speaker 3: pretty late in their lives who said, I've just had
- 10:11Speaker 3: a couple two three buddies retire and they're dead within
- 10:14Speaker 3: two years.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm so afraid of it. My financial guy, he said,
- 10:18Speaker 1: my business people retire, they come back to me a
- 10:22Speaker 1: year later and they look like they've aged fifteen years.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Oh all the time, it is story. So you want
- 10:28Speaker 1: to keep you know, you want to keep your brain
- 10:30Speaker 1: in your body, thinking A, we still need you, still
- 10:32Speaker 1: need you to do things. So exercise is good for that.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And they have in the New York Times today talking
- 10:36Speaker 1: to a whole bunch of experts, what are the best
- 10:38Speaker 1: exercises out there? You're gonna like one of these examples, Joe,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but the best exercise out there? They talk about walking
- 10:44Speaker 1: and running and all these different things for everything, for
- 10:48Speaker 1: all parts of your body and for your mind, like
- 10:50Speaker 1: running is good for cardiovascular but not some parts of
- 10:53Speaker 1: your body, and not really anything for the mind. Whereas
- 10:56Speaker 1: the best one they came up with it is tennis.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Tennis is just great for all kinds of different movements
- 11:03Speaker 1: you do. There's cardiovascular, there's stretching, there's putting pressure on
- 11:08Speaker 1: all kinds of different things, and then tennis requires enough
- 11:12Speaker 1: mental energy, thinking that it's good from that aspect, so
- 11:16Speaker 1: and that coordination. They just put that at number one.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Sure, and just frontal lobe stuff, like all right, where's
- 11:22Speaker 3: my opponent? Where should I hit this? How hard should
- 11:25Speaker 3: I hit this?
- 11:25Speaker 1: With? What spin?
- 11:27Speaker 3: How are they likely to react? Where do I need
- 11:29Speaker 3: to get defensively? I played enough tennis to understand that. Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 3: that makes sense.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Well, And as we've learned and talked about before, that
- 11:35Speaker 1: whole intense bursts of energy thing that they've learned is
- 11:38Speaker 1: super important. I don't do enutch, try to have one
- 11:41Speaker 1: a month. I don't do enough of that. But they've
- 11:43Speaker 1: decided that rather than going out and run two miles,
- 11:47Speaker 1: sprint fifty yards, stop sprint, that sort of thing is
- 11:50Speaker 1: better for you for all your muscles and stuff. Anyway,
- 11:53Speaker 1: Tennis offers a full body workout. The game demands quick
- 11:56Speaker 1: changes in direction, quick bursts of speed, all all the
- 12:00Speaker 1: things that I mentioned before. Let me find that number
- 12:02Speaker 1: on here. A study found that tennis players lived ten
- 12:06Speaker 1: years longer than their sedentary peers, oh longer than soccer players, swimmers,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and other recreational athletes in the analysis something about tennis.
- 12:18Speaker 1: You never know what these studies, but.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I gotta find a fellow overweight, lazy person with like
- 12:26Speaker 3: bad and or artificial joints that just wants to play
- 12:29Speaker 3: like lazy man's tennis. The key you will work up
- 12:32Speaker 3: to get into a little competitive The key to tennis
- 12:35Speaker 3: is playing somebody your own skill level.
- 12:37Speaker 1: That is the whole thing. I remember that from high school.
- 12:40Speaker 1: You play somebody way worse in you, it's not really
- 12:42Speaker 1: any fun. You play somebody way better than you, it's
- 12:44Speaker 1: just pointless being out there. But if you're evenly matched,
- 12:46Speaker 1: it's pretty fun. Even if you suck. If you're evenly matched,
- 12:50Speaker 1: it's pretty fun. But you'll like this part. So they
- 12:53Speaker 1: did a study of three hundred thousand older adults in
- 12:55Speaker 1: the United States. Cycling was linked to three percent lower
- 12:59Speaker 1: risk of dying over a twelve year period. Swimming was
- 13:02Speaker 1: linked to a five percent lower risk. Golf linked to
- 13:06Speaker 1: a seven percent lower risk. What so golf's a pretty
- 13:09Speaker 1: good one. Huh, Not exactly sure.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Why you know, it's a lot more tiring than people
- 13:14Speaker 3: think it is. There's a tremendous amount of walking up
- 13:16Speaker 3: and down hills, and even if you're riding in a cart,
- 13:20Speaker 3: you walk a couple of miles.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But not as tiring as cycling. Why is golf better
- 13:23Speaker 1: than cycling? Different? You're using a lot more different things. Yeah, well, maybe, Jack,
- 13:30Speaker 1: maybe you could read the paragraph you already highlighted in
- 13:32Speaker 1: the New York Times, if your brain worked, he played,
- 13:35Speaker 1: if he played more tennis. While cycling primarily works the
- 13:39Speaker 1: lower body, swimming adds upper body conditioning. Golf tends to
- 13:42Speaker 1: involve more gentle aerobic activity, but also requires rotational power,
- 13:46Speaker 1: balance and fine motor control. There you go, Well it
- 13:49Speaker 1: should anyway. This mix, this mix of physical demands might
- 13:54Speaker 1: drive modest differences in longevity, but they aren't sure. I
- 13:59Speaker 1: would just say this activity is good, lack of activity
- 14:03Speaker 1: is bad. What about baking? That's an activity, results are delicious.
- 14:11Speaker 3: You got to use your brain, right, You got to
- 14:12Speaker 3: move back and forth across the No.
- 14:14Speaker 1: No, you got to carry your fat ass to the toilet.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Oh my god? What wit? What was that? Escalated quickly?
- 14:22Speaker 1: What the hell? Out of mounds? Out of bounds? Maybe
- 14:27Speaker 1: it's because I swore off big goods for the year
- 14:29Speaker 1: and I'm a little touchy on Oh sorry, I'm not
- 14:33Speaker 1: talking to you, folks. I haven't had a make good
- 14:36Speaker 1: since the year twenty twenty five, which is long weeks ago.
- 14:41Speaker 3: This very morning, I says to my wife. I says,
- 14:43Speaker 3: I've got to get to the gym one more time
- 14:46Speaker 3: per week.
- 14:47Speaker 1: All right, I've got to all right, what would give me?
- 14:51Speaker 1: Give me your wisdom. See, you you got the disadvantage
- 14:55Speaker 1: of being married. I'm in the gym every day. I've
- 14:57Speaker 1: got the driving force that is being single, right and
- 15:01Speaker 1: wanting to look better.
- 15:02Speaker 2: On I'm pregnant and married and I'm in the gym
- 15:05Speaker 2: four to five.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You're better than me. I'm asking you to help me,
- 15:09Speaker 1: not brag.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah, just go, you'll feel You'll just think about how
- 15:13Speaker 2: you'll just go.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Oh, it hadn't occurred to me. Just go. Oh, if
- 15:17Speaker 1: you do seminars online, you're like, you're a dick. Oh,
- 15:24Speaker 1: that's funny. Think of focus on the after.
- 15:26Speaker 2: That's what I do. My mental is so much better
- 15:30Speaker 2: once I finished.
- 15:30Speaker 1: No doubt I am. I've never in my life gotten
- 15:34Speaker 1: done with the workout and saying, God, I'm glad I
- 15:36Speaker 1: did that.
- 15:37Speaker 3: You know, I've heard that advice before, but I'd forgetten it.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Picture how you'll feel about yourself afterward.
- 15:42Speaker 1: That's good, that's good. It took us a while to
- 15:44Speaker 1: get there, so here we are anyway. Well, I guess
- 15:50Speaker 1: that's it. That was awesome.
