- 0:00Speaker 1: Who are you going to call? Apparently Jujo Martin, who
- 0:03Speaker 1: ghostbusted his way to victory after not so victorious Saturday
- 0:08Speaker 1: sprint left the Spaniard haunted by racing's pass. I'm your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Rinita Vanmuellen, and joining me is the man who doesn't
- 0:15Speaker 1: need a proton pack to capture Moto GP's wildest moment,
- 0:18Speaker 1: Matt Clayton. Matt, the Indonesian Grand Prix was a wild ride.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Sure was.
- 0:25Speaker 3: And now you've gone with the Ghostbusters theme here, Ranta.
- 0:27Speaker 3: I've got the was it Ray Parker Junior, I've got
- 0:30Speaker 3: this song stuck in my head down anyway, visions of
- 0:32Speaker 3: Bill Murray and all sorts of going through. Well, I'm
- 0:36Speaker 3: going to call Bill Murray because at least you're guaranteed
- 0:37Speaker 3: to laugh at Bill's on the other end of the line.
- 0:39Speaker 3: But I look at was it was really really another
- 0:43Speaker 3: bizarre chapter in this bizarre world. Champion Jim meant that
- 0:46Speaker 3: Juje Martin had a few demons to put to bed
- 0:49Speaker 3: after what happened in the sprint at Mandalika on Saturday,
- 0:52Speaker 3: which of course came after what he'd done in the
- 0:54Speaker 3: Grand Prix Atmandalica twelve months earlier, but responded pretty emphatically
- 0:58Speaker 3: and yeah, lost a few wants of his championship lead,
- 1:01Speaker 3: but he can afford to lose a few. And here
- 1:03Speaker 3: we are twenty one point lead, five rounds to go.
- 1:05Speaker 3: He's got it in his hands. But as we've said
- 1:09Speaker 3: numerous times on this podcast this year, I don't know
- 1:11Speaker 3: if I trust either of these guys to win this
- 1:13Speaker 3: World Championship. It might come down to who loses it.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I just thought it was so funny that after Saturday's
- 1:19Speaker 1: sprint when jo Hey crash, Peco came out after and said, yeah,
- 1:22Speaker 1: he was going to win the race by five seconds
- 1:24Speaker 1: or four seconds, and then you could see that now
- 1:27Speaker 1: the mind games are starting to come in between the
- 1:29Speaker 1: two because he responded with I didn't even know what happened,
- 1:33Speaker 1: but then went on to win Sunday's race with such
- 1:36Speaker 1: a big margin that I think, Okay, it's going to
- 1:39Speaker 1: start to come on track and off track now right.
- 1:42Speaker 3: There's definitely a psychological element to this, which I love
- 1:45Speaker 3: with these two because I think they come at it
- 1:47Speaker 3: from two completely different angles. And spoiler alert, I am
- 1:51Speaker 3: going to be riding on this for Fox Sports at
- 1:53Speaker 3: some point in the next twenty four hours and that
- 1:55Speaker 3: they're both trying to get to the same place, but
- 1:57Speaker 3: they approach it from completely different points of view. And
- 2:00Speaker 3: whereas Jorge will do the upturned palms, I don't know
- 2:03Speaker 3: how it all went so wrong, whereas Peco will try
- 2:06Speaker 3: and sort of intellectualize what happened and come up with
- 2:09Speaker 3: some sort of rational reason behind it. They've got these
- 2:12Speaker 3: completely divergent personalities, but they're trying to do the same thing,
- 2:15Speaker 3: which I think is what makes it so interesting. But
- 2:18Speaker 3: the one thing they are sharing this year is jeez,
- 2:20Speaker 3: they know how to throw away points from positions of advantage,
- 2:23Speaker 3: don't they. My goodness, my god.
- 2:25Speaker 1: But also an Aabashanini, I feel like we're just going
- 2:28Speaker 1: to be jumping from crash to crash because there was
- 2:31Speaker 1: like nine crashes and only twelve finishes in this weekend race.
- 2:36Speaker 1: So an Abashanini tuck in the front when he was
- 2:40Speaker 1: clearly on point to take a podium position. Do you
- 2:43Speaker 1: think that that crash was just from a build up
- 2:46Speaker 1: of confidence? And look at me, go.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I really don't. I mean, we know how naa race is.
- 2:52Speaker 3: At this point, he's like this classic slow burn and
- 2:55Speaker 3: he always comes to the boil late in races, but
- 2:58Speaker 3: that felt like there were still so many laps left
- 3:01Speaker 3: to go in that race, and he had such pace
- 3:03Speaker 3: that I dare say he would have finished second at worst,
- 3:07Speaker 3: and it may well have could have been another fight
- 3:09Speaker 3: for the victory with Martine and Bastideni, as it was
- 3:11Speaker 3: the previous weekend at Messano. But yeah, I mean you
- 3:14Speaker 3: mentioned a race punctuated by crashes. I did read earlier
- 3:18Speaker 3: that we had twelve finishes on Sunday. That's the fewest
- 3:22Speaker 3: in a Premier class race since twenty eleven, and it
- 3:25Speaker 3: felt like it at the time. I mean, it doesn't
- 3:27Speaker 3: help when four of them go out on the first lap,
- 3:28Speaker 3: which I'm sure we'll get to later on in this podcast,
- 3:31Speaker 3: but yeah, just twelve finishes only twenty one starters, of course,
- 3:34Speaker 3: because Michael Olivera didn't make it as far as the start,
- 3:36Speaker 3: but it did seem like if you stayed on your
- 3:39Speaker 3: bike you were going to get points, and not just
- 3:41Speaker 3: one or two. There were some decent points on offer
- 3:43Speaker 3: if you just managed to finish the race.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And yeah, the people like, my mind's just gone completely blank.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So I'm going to go to Joan Zako because he's
- 3:55Speaker 1: one who really I would say he's my writer of
- 3:58Speaker 1: the weekend this weekend because Zako, right, we don't get
- 4:02Speaker 1: to talk about him too often because he's usually down
- 4:04Speaker 1: the back of the field, and even if he is
- 4:06Speaker 1: scoring points is like a big deal. But narrowly missed
- 4:09Speaker 1: Q two on Friday, made it out of Q one
- 4:11Speaker 1: on Saturday, qualified seventh, finished eighth in the Sprint and
- 4:15Speaker 1: ninth in the Grand Prix, and marked Honda's first Sprint
- 4:19Speaker 1: Grand Prix points double of the season. That's big going
- 4:24Speaker 1: for Zako and for Honda.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, super impressive the entire weekend, and this has been
- 4:28Speaker 3: coming a little bit over the past couple of rounds.
- 4:30Speaker 3: He was pretty decent Massano as well, and of the
- 4:34Speaker 3: four guys on the Honda, for me, he seems to
- 4:37Speaker 3: be the guy who understands when the limit of the
- 4:40Speaker 3: bike is and is coming closest to you know, teetering
- 4:45Speaker 3: on the edge but not falling off. Whereas I think
- 4:47Speaker 3: you look at the other guys on Honda's, Luca Marine
- 4:49Speaker 3: is usually so far from the limit because he's in
- 4:51Speaker 3: sort of self preservation mode at this point, so he
- 4:53Speaker 3: never quite has that performance. And you've got to admire
- 4:58Speaker 3: the guy's t nacity. He's usually railing against the limits
- 5:02Speaker 3: of the machine, saying no, I can push this, I
- 5:04Speaker 3: can push this, I can push this, And then the
- 5:06Speaker 3: graphic comes up on screen. It says jo had mere
- 5:08Speaker 3: crash rider. Okay, so he's the one that steps over
- 5:11Speaker 3: the limit. So Zako's found the sweet spot now of
- 5:13Speaker 3: knowing where the limit is and not being tempted to
- 5:16Speaker 3: push past that. And yeah, it's looking really good for him.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The last couple of rounds super impressive of the entire weekend.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And what was interesting is that he had that moment
- 5:25Speaker 3: of clarity on Sunday. I was listening to his post
- 5:27Speaker 3: race debrief where he said, I could have pushed for more,
- 5:30Speaker 3: but there's a point that you don't want to crash
- 5:32Speaker 3: from a top ten position on a Honda. There was
- 5:35Speaker 3: nothing to be gained there. He was pretty safely there.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Bring the bike home, take the points, take the progress,
- 5:41Speaker 3: and move on. So good ride for him. And yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 3: this must be some sort of record, because I think
- 5:46Speaker 3: we're thirteen podcasts in and this to the earliest we've
- 5:48Speaker 3: ever spoken about Honda.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I reckon and I like that we're talking about it
- 5:52Speaker 1: in a positive light because it is so easy to say, oh,
- 5:54Speaker 1: another terrible weekend. Honder, another terrible weekend. It's like, cool, Okay,
- 5:58Speaker 1: we're signing to see you know, Fabio once again. He
- 6:01Speaker 1: was in Q two. He's getting up close to the
- 6:03Speaker 1: front to see a Honda there. It's like, cool, this
- 6:05Speaker 1: isn't just a ju Catti dominated championship anymore. There's a
- 6:10Speaker 1: little hinge of the Japanese manufacturers coming through.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yeah, for the first time this year. I think you
- 6:15Speaker 3: could say there's actual genuine optimism for both of the
- 6:18Speaker 3: Japanese manufacturers, mostly for yamaharaver Honda, because Kuaatearo was again
- 6:24Speaker 3: outstanding on the weekend, as he was at the second
- 6:27Speaker 3: Massana around. But yeah, nice to see Zako in the mix,
- 6:30Speaker 3: and just about coming up on the one year anniversary
- 6:33Speaker 3: of his first Grand Prix win here in Australia, of course.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So nice Tommy, very nice timing. But Coudura, I want
- 6:39Speaker 1: to talk on that because it seemed like he's fast
- 6:43Speaker 1: on those single laps that we notice he's getting into
- 6:45Speaker 1: Q two, qualified on the second row of the grid,
- 6:48Speaker 1: But it seems like there's still just that little thing
- 6:51Speaker 1: missing in the race, you know. P twelve in the sprint,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and thanks to all the crashes and the incidents which
- 6:57Speaker 1: we'll talk about, he got seventh in the Grand Prix,
- 6:59Speaker 1: But I feel like if that hadn't happened, he would
- 7:02Speaker 1: be much further down the field. Is in his post
- 7:06Speaker 1: three debrief is he talking about is there areas where
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Yamaha still is lacking quite a bit.
- 7:11Speaker 3: It's still straight line speed for that bike, and you
- 7:13Speaker 3: can see it with the speed trap figures. They're always
- 7:15Speaker 3: down the bottom of the speed trap figures every weekend,
- 7:18Speaker 3: and that's dictating the way he has to race at
- 7:20Speaker 3: the moment, because he's having to risk so much more
- 7:23Speaker 3: in the breaking zones to try and make passes and
- 7:26Speaker 3: almost block pass his way through because on the straight
- 7:29Speaker 3: it doesn't matter how good of an exit he gets.
- 7:32Speaker 3: That bike is still clearly the slowest in a straight
- 7:34Speaker 3: line of any bike in the field, So he's having
- 7:37Speaker 3: to probably ride a little bit differently than he'd like
- 7:39Speaker 3: to try and make up for that in the corners.
- 7:42Speaker 3: But you've got to admire the way the guy has
- 7:45Speaker 3: gone about it. And I mean, I think that's three
- 7:47Speaker 3: races in a row now where you could say, yeah,
- 7:49Speaker 3: Yamaha was decent. You know, there's some progress being made there,
- 7:53Speaker 3: and with that second team coming in next year, with
- 7:55Speaker 3: Pramahar of course, and the rider lineup they've got, it's
- 7:59Speaker 3: all pretty optimistic for them at the moment.
- 8:01Speaker 2: But I'm not sure you.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Could have another rider on the grid that could get
- 8:04Speaker 3: more out of what he's doing with that bike at
- 8:06Speaker 3: the moment. I just think he's doing a really, really
- 8:08Speaker 3: solid job.
- 8:09Speaker 1: For those of you playing along at home to the
- 8:11Speaker 1: drinking game of whenever we say Pramahas take a shot,
- 8:14Speaker 1: there you go. Done.
- 8:17Speaker 3: The only difference this week I did it before you,
- 8:20Speaker 3: so you've traded me.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Well, well, if you can't tell, there's so much to
- 8:25Speaker 1: discuss in this week's pod, and we are kind of
- 8:27Speaker 1: going all over the shot because it really was a
- 8:30Speaker 1: wild ride this weekend. Let's talk about Pedro Acosta qualified
- 8:34Speaker 1: third in the sprint, finished sixth, but then third on Sunday.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But then the podium situation was linked to that tire
- 8:41Speaker 1: pressure penalty possibility, so you could see that it was
- 8:45Speaker 1: just not a fun time for Pedro being on the
- 8:48Speaker 1: podium or even in the little room where they're chilling
- 8:51Speaker 1: out before where he was just fine to be belching
- 8:54Speaker 1: on live television.
- 8:57Speaker 3: That was interesting when that went out on motor TP
- 9:00Speaker 3: social media the next day, they managed to either mute
- 9:03Speaker 3: or remove the burbing, which was amusing. But it was
- 9:06Speaker 3: in the end he was able to keep that second place,
- 9:08Speaker 3: and it was a bit of a shame that he
- 9:11Speaker 3: and Katim didn't get to celebrate that at the time,
- 9:15Speaker 3: because it was a genuinely outstanding race weekend for him,
- 9:20Speaker 3: his best result since back in Round three at the Americas,
- 9:22Speaker 3: which seems like an absolute eternity you go now, but
- 9:25Speaker 3: this wasn't a result that lent itself to any rain
- 9:28Speaker 3: or bizarre circumstances or anything else. He was just genuinely
- 9:31Speaker 3: on the pace at the entire weekend. Got a little
- 9:34Speaker 3: bit beaten up in the sprint, but in the race
- 9:37Speaker 3: he never showed a wheel to Juge Martin up front,
- 9:40Speaker 3: but he also didn't let him relax. And you know,
- 9:42Speaker 3: that final winning marginal I think was one point four
- 9:44Speaker 3: seconds and it wasn't really in doubt for Martin, but
- 9:48Speaker 3: a cost to put the pressure on and I think
- 9:50Speaker 3: that's all you can do when you're on a bike.
- 9:52Speaker 3: That's not a DICTI at least make the guys up
- 9:55Speaker 3: the front think about it. We've seen both Martin and
- 9:57Speaker 3: Banyai crashing the lead of races so far this year.
- 9:59Speaker 3: So outstanding result for him and definitely something that Katie
- 10:04Speaker 3: m needed. It does make you wonder what's going on
- 10:07Speaker 3: with the other riders in that stable because it's really
- 10:09Speaker 3: not going brilliantly at the moment for them. But through
- 10:13Speaker 3: hit weekend for him and GC brings some energy when
- 10:16Speaker 3: he's at the front of races. And the good thing
- 10:19Speaker 3: I think for Motor GP fans is this is something
- 10:20Speaker 3: we're going to see for years and years to come.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I think he's back where he belongs. And you know,
- 10:25Speaker 3: he said he was sort of dreaming of a win
- 10:27Speaker 3: that was, you know, maybe a little bit too far fetched.
- 10:30Speaker 3: But you do wonder if these next five rounds now.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I mean, he is mathematically eliminated from the championship there.
- 10:36Speaker 3: There's actually only four of them that can win it
- 10:37Speaker 3: at this point. But I don't think that's the last
- 10:39Speaker 3: time we see him on a podium this year. It's
- 10:41Speaker 3: just a genuinely outstanding weekend and you can see the
- 10:45Speaker 3: respect he's got from all of the front running guys
- 10:47Speaker 3: who've been in it for a long time already, because
- 10:50Speaker 3: I don't think anyone's surprised when he does this anymore,
- 10:52Speaker 3: and you know, you forget sometimes he's a twenty year
- 10:54Speaker 3: old kid still massively impressive.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Oh rookie year, first time at this track on a
- 10:59Speaker 1: Grand Prix bike. Like, the things that this kid is
- 11:02Speaker 1: doing and the places he's going to go is going
- 11:04Speaker 1: to be really exciting to watch. And I know everyone
- 11:06Speaker 1: said it, but it is like when Marquez came to
- 11:08Speaker 1: Moto GP all those years ago. It's nice and it
- 11:12Speaker 1: brings something new because we are kind of missing the storyline,
- 11:16Speaker 1: like I've said previously, of I guess the on track drama.
- 11:20Speaker 1: As much as I love the fact that, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: Peco and Jorgey kind of did the little hug up
- 11:25Speaker 1: in Park Firm May after Sunday's race and you can
- 11:28Speaker 1: see the respect there, we aren't getting that like old
- 11:30Speaker 1: school rivalry. So it's nice to see something exciting like
- 11:34Speaker 1: Pedro coming through. But for katm not the weekend obviously
- 11:38Speaker 1: that Brad Bender and Jack Miller wanted. And it's interesting.
- 11:42Speaker 1: We know Jack's leaving, we know Brad's still staying there.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Pedro's moving into the factory team. But I just keep
- 11:49Speaker 1: thinking in the back of my head, what does this
- 11:50Speaker 1: mean for Brad? Does he feel like there's going to
- 11:52Speaker 1: be a lot of extra pressure next year.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I think there's a huge chance that by this time
- 11:58Speaker 3: next year, And this is not spect to Brad Bender,
- 12:00Speaker 3: who's a very, very good Grand Prix rider, but there's
- 12:03Speaker 3: an opportunity here for for a Costa to go in
- 12:07Speaker 3: and become the man in this team. And it's just
- 12:12Speaker 3: crying out for someone to come in and take the
- 12:14Speaker 3: leadership of the team. And obviously we'll probably touch on
- 12:17Speaker 3: a little bit later there's been a management reshuffle there,
- 12:20Speaker 3: but that's a factory influx at the moment, and they
- 12:24Speaker 3: are primed, to my mind, to be the candidate to
- 12:27Speaker 3: sort of become that best of the rest. A prially
- 12:30Speaker 3: is sort of floundering a little bit. They've got a
- 12:32Speaker 3: super yew rider line up next year, as we know.
- 12:34Speaker 3: But yeah, interesting times in at Katim. But you can't
- 12:38Speaker 3: help but think that a cost has just got World
- 12:40Speaker 3: championships plural in his future. You know, I don't know
- 12:44Speaker 3: how many there are, but if you were to say
- 12:46Speaker 3: to me, are there, you know, take the over under
- 12:49Speaker 3: on three World championships before Pedro Acosta's finished in Motor GP.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I'd probably take you know, I'd probably take the over
- 12:54Speaker 3: just because to me, he's that good. He is this
- 12:57Speaker 3: generation's Marqueers, and if Katim can give him the equipment,
- 13:00Speaker 3: I don't think is he doubting the guy's quality.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Let's talk about katm and let's stick with Jack Miller
- 13:05Speaker 1: because he was involved in that multi rider crash that
- 13:10Speaker 1: included four riders. So we had Alex Marquez, Alasia Spargaro,
- 13:14Speaker 1: Luca Marini and obviously Jack Miller. And Jack said in
- 13:17Speaker 1: the post race that it was his fault. I think
- 13:21Speaker 1: he grabbed a bit too much front break by the looks,
- 13:23Speaker 1: stood the bike up and then obviously ran off track,
- 13:26Speaker 1: taking out a few other riders. It's so hard because
- 13:31Speaker 1: obviously we hate seeing this. But is this a Jack
- 13:35Speaker 1: Miller that's just trying to finish up with katm and
- 13:38Speaker 1: start again, or do you think it was just purely
- 13:41Speaker 1: a rasing mistake.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Before I go down that rabbit hole, I'm going to
- 13:45Speaker 3: do a straw pole here with you. Shouldn't have been
- 13:48Speaker 3: a penalty or not?
- 13:49Speaker 1: What are your thoughts, By the looks of it, the
- 13:54Speaker 1: track looks so tight and that's they're going into that
- 13:56Speaker 1: Chicuane straight away that it's kind of like, whoa could
- 14:00Speaker 1: cause this sort of crash? So do you just accept
- 14:02Speaker 1: it that these sorts of crash could happen when there's
- 14:04Speaker 1: a lot of people there? Now, I guess that's my
- 14:07Speaker 1: take on it.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that's kind of where the stewards
- 14:09Speaker 3: ended up with it, because if you look at the
- 14:11Speaker 3: replays of the accident, Jack's on the inside going in
- 14:14Speaker 3: a turn three. He slightly checks up because he's side
- 14:17Speaker 3: by side with Alasias Spargo. He slightly checks up because
- 14:20Speaker 3: of the line that Maverick Vinalez takes in front of him,
- 14:23Speaker 3: and he loses the front and the bike crashes. But
- 14:25Speaker 3: of course because he's on the inside of the corner,
- 14:27Speaker 3: the bike washes through the outside of the corner, takes
- 14:30Speaker 3: out of Spargo, takes out Marini, and takes out who's
- 14:34Speaker 3: the other rider that I have completely Elisias Bargo and
- 14:37Speaker 3: Alex Marquez and Luca Marini. Yes, that's right, And so
- 14:40Speaker 3: the fact that there wasn't a penalty, I wasn't I
- 14:44Speaker 3: thought it was actually all right. As bad as it
- 14:46Speaker 3: was that four of them were out on the first
- 14:47Speaker 3: lap because I know we're clutching at straws here. Jack
- 14:50Speaker 3: didn't take the other three riders out. Jack's bike did,
- 14:54Speaker 3: and there's a difference. He didn't hit anybody and cause
- 14:57Speaker 3: the concertina effect. He'd had his own accident and unfortunately
- 15:00Speaker 3: the result of that own accident ended the races as
- 15:03Speaker 3: three other rivals. So and he also put his hand
- 15:05Speaker 3: up and was pretty contrite about it. It was there's
- 15:08Speaker 3: no way you could have argued that it wasn't his fault.
- 15:10Speaker 3: The other writers just shrugged their shoulders. At least they
- 15:13Speaker 3: accepted the apology and said, it's just the first lap.
- 15:15Speaker 3: It's just what happens. But in terms of the rest
- 15:19Speaker 3: of this year, it's kind of got that feeling now
- 15:23Speaker 3: that it's like anyone who has quit a job that
- 15:26Speaker 3: is serving out there one week, two weeks, one month notice,
- 15:29Speaker 3: whatever it might be. It's got a bit of that
- 15:31Speaker 3: about it now, in that both parties have decided that
- 15:34Speaker 3: they're not going to continue. Jack's known this for a
- 15:38Speaker 3: fair while. He's also got twenty twenty five sorted now,
- 15:41Speaker 3: which I think adds a different dynamic into the mix
- 15:44Speaker 3: in that he knows that in five rounds time. He's
- 15:46Speaker 3: not going to be writing for KTM anymore, and it's
- 15:48Speaker 3: not like he's finishing up or he's going to another series.
- 15:51Speaker 3: He knows he'll be back in Moto GP with a
- 15:52Speaker 3: different manufacturer and a different team next year. So he's
- 15:56Speaker 3: the equivalent of the guy serving out notice at his
- 15:58Speaker 3: current job. He said on Sunday that the accident was
- 16:03Speaker 3: one thing, but the onus is on him to not
- 16:05Speaker 3: be so far down on the grid because you know,
- 16:08Speaker 3: you look at the first lap, the TV shot always
- 16:09Speaker 3: focuses on the riders at the front, as it should,
- 16:12Speaker 3: but you get past about P eight, p ten in
- 16:14Speaker 3: that pack, it's madness back there, And partly because the
- 16:19Speaker 3: machinery is so competitive, but also partly because I think
- 16:22Speaker 3: the riders now know that it's so hard to pass
- 16:24Speaker 3: in races that you can make heaps of places up
- 16:27Speaker 3: on the first lap if you're super aggressive, because the
- 16:30Speaker 3: races tend to settle into a rhythm after that because
- 16:32Speaker 3: overtaking is difficult. So I reckon there's more risks being
- 16:35Speaker 3: taken in the midpack now than there's ever been, and
- 16:38Speaker 3: it's kind of amazing that we don't have more incidents
- 16:40Speaker 3: like this on the first lap, particularly with the nature
- 16:42Speaker 3: of some of these tracks, but that first sector at
- 16:45Speaker 3: Mandalika series of switchbacks, not a lot of room there.
- 16:49Speaker 3: And the fact that if Jacket had that accident on
- 16:51Speaker 3: the outside and taking himself out and skittled across the
- 16:54Speaker 3: gravel there, then he's the only one that's out of
- 16:56Speaker 3: the race. The fact that happened on the inside, that
- 16:58Speaker 3: he was pinched against the curb and then lost front.
- 17:01Speaker 3: It was unfortunate, but it just turned into a game
- 17:02Speaker 3: of dominoes after that, and a few of these, a
- 17:05Speaker 3: few of his peers would just unlucky to be in
- 17:07Speaker 3: the wrong place at the wrong time.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I guess we spoke about qualifying, and because I want
- 17:11Speaker 1: to touch on that a little bit, is we saw
- 17:13Speaker 1: Peco Banyaya qualifier on the second row of the grid.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But it seems like he's really struggling with his starts
- 17:20Speaker 1: at the moment. And I guess my question to you
- 17:24Speaker 1: is is this what is going to maybe cause Peco
- 17:28Speaker 1: to possibly lose the championship. Is it just the lack
- 17:30Speaker 1: of studs or do you think that the lack of
- 17:32Speaker 1: the start and that the troubles there is the pressure
- 17:35Speaker 1: getting to him.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I don't know if it's the pressure as such. He
- 17:39Speaker 3: I don't think he's impervious to pressure. I think it
- 17:41Speaker 3: just probably manifests itself in different ways with him that
- 17:45Speaker 3: you're right about he starts. I mean, you think back
- 17:46Speaker 3: to the last couple of rounds, you know, particularly I'm
- 17:49Speaker 3: thinking Massano, where Martin was awesome off the start at Massano,
- 17:54Speaker 3: he was pretty good on the weekend from Pole. But
- 17:57Speaker 3: of the two of them, you would suspect that Martine's
- 18:00Speaker 3: probably going to qualify the better of the two across
- 18:03Speaker 3: these next five rounds. And because we've got the sprints,
- 18:05Speaker 3: it's ten race starts, and you would probably back Martine
- 18:10Speaker 3: to get the majority of those, right. Bannon starts have
- 18:13Speaker 3: been an issue now for a while, and he's having
- 18:16Speaker 3: these curious races that we saw this a bit on Sunday,
- 18:19Speaker 3: just as we'd seen the previous Sunday at Massano. The
- 18:22Speaker 3: start gets off the line pretty slowly first few laps,
- 18:25Speaker 3: so so it takes him a while to build the
- 18:28Speaker 3: tire temperature that he wants to have the confidence to
- 18:31Speaker 3: really push. And then what we saw at Mandalika on
- 18:33Speaker 3: Sunday is he got stuck behind some other deucaddies, and
- 18:36Speaker 3: when you're riding against guys who are from the same factory,
- 18:40Speaker 3: whether it's the GP twenty four or the GP twenty three,
- 18:42Speaker 3: they both have their different strengths. He knows what he's
- 18:44Speaker 3: fighting against. You're dealing with saw in front tire pressures,
- 18:48Speaker 3: so it takes him a while to get back to
- 18:50Speaker 3: probably where he should be finishing, and so on Sunday,
- 18:56Speaker 3: you'd say third is probably the best things could have
- 18:58Speaker 3: got given how bad the start was. But it wasn't
- 19:00Speaker 3: even a super competitive third, in that he was a
- 19:02Speaker 3: fair way away from second. Martin was pretty untroubled upfront.
- 19:06Speaker 3: And the difference this year compared to the last, of course,
- 19:08Speaker 3: is that he's not the writer in the ascendancy. And
- 19:11Speaker 3: I was looking at this before. We've got five rounds
- 19:13Speaker 3: to go. Martin has a twenty one point championship lead.
- 19:16Speaker 3: We're five rounds to go. Last year, Bagya, I had
- 19:18Speaker 3: an eighteen point championship lead. So we've had that many
- 19:21Speaker 3: crashes and weird twists and turns this year, but we've
- 19:24Speaker 3: kind of ended up in the same statistical place as
- 19:27Speaker 3: we were twelve months ago. It's just at this time,
- 19:30Speaker 3: Peco is the hunter rather is hunting rather than being hunted.
- 19:35Speaker 3: That's the difference between the two. But these starts, you know,
- 19:37Speaker 3: it's becoming an issue now because once or twice a
- 19:41Speaker 3: season you can shrug your shoulders and say, Okay, it's
- 19:43Speaker 3: going to happen. It's happening too regularly, and he's putting
- 19:46Speaker 3: himself on the back foot and giving himself too.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Much to do.
- 19:49Speaker 3: And I don't about you, but the whole season I've
- 19:52Speaker 3: been thinking this still feels like Bangya's title to lose.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I trust him more to deliver when it comes down
- 19:59Speaker 3: to the crunch that twenty one point deficit. Now he's
- 20:03Speaker 3: not on this super tight rope yet because there's still
- 20:05Speaker 3: one hundred and eighty five points to play for, but
- 20:08Speaker 3: one more D and F at this point for Banyaya.
- 20:11Speaker 3: How costly is that going to be? Because I don't
- 20:14Speaker 3: think he's going to be in control anymore now. The
- 20:17Speaker 3: flip side to that is you've got to trust Martine
- 20:19Speaker 3: to capitalize on the advantage that he has. But these
- 20:22Speaker 3: starts are an area that he definitely needs to clean
- 20:24Speaker 3: up because we're getting to the point now where one
- 20:26Speaker 3: or two more bad starts could have pretty severe consequences.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I reckon, Oh, definitely. I think that it's going to
- 20:33Speaker 1: be really interesting to see now where we're at this point.
- 20:36Speaker 1: It's a sticky point, I guess where it really could
- 20:39Speaker 1: go either way. And they're kind of hoping that either
- 20:42Speaker 1: they can maximize or the weaknesses they can strengthen, or
- 20:47Speaker 1: the other person will make a mistake and their weaknesses
- 20:51Speaker 1: become too weak and they you know, crash out of front.
- 20:54Speaker 1: So it's this game of cat and mouse where they're like,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I need to better myself, but also I don't want
- 20:59Speaker 1: the other one to keep bettering themselves.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's got this sort of narrative about it
- 21:04Speaker 3: now where I feel this championship might be won by
- 21:07Speaker 3: the rider who makes the fewest mistakes rather than just
- 21:11Speaker 3: outrightly goes out there and wins it. It's got that
- 21:13Speaker 3: sort of feel about it. And I think we'll look
- 21:15Speaker 3: back at this season and think about the points that
- 21:19Speaker 3: both of these championship protagonists have thrown away from advantageous
- 21:23Speaker 3: positions in.
- 21:24Speaker 2: The lead or on podiums.
- 21:25Speaker 3: It'll come down to who loses the least, if.
- 21:29Speaker 2: That makes sense.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I don't know if this is necessarily going to be
- 21:31Speaker 3: one of these two saying, right, grab this thing by
- 21:34Speaker 3: the horns in the next five rounds and clear off.
- 21:36Speaker 3: I think it's going to be determined by who makes
- 21:39Speaker 3: the fewest mistakes. And you've now got this other factor
- 21:42Speaker 3: now that the pressure will start to ramp up as
- 21:45Speaker 3: this advantage that Martin has maintains. And look, you know
- 21:49Speaker 3: Baanyai took three points out of him over the course
- 21:52Speaker 3: of the Mandalika weekend for all those twists and turns,
- 21:54Speaker 3: with the Sprint and the Grand Prix. Three points a weekend.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Is it enough now for Banyaya? Because if it's only
- 21:59Speaker 3: three once a weekend, he does not win the World Championship.
- 22:02Speaker 3: So you know it's it's on Martin's racket to use
- 22:05Speaker 3: a tennis term. But I'm having trust issues with both
- 22:08Speaker 3: of these guys this year, and you can't help but wonder, like,
- 22:12Speaker 3: so Bastiunini and Marquees. Now you know they're mathematically still
- 22:16Speaker 3: in it, but we know they're pretty much out of it.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Crash with Bastunini, engine failure for Marquees on Sunday at Mandalika.
- 22:22Speaker 3: This seems to be a season that those two must
- 22:24Speaker 3: be thinking. Man, these two up the front, have left
- 22:26Speaker 3: so many opportunities for us to be right in the
- 22:28Speaker 3: championship fight until the end, and we haven't taken advantage
- 22:32Speaker 3: of that. So it's a bit of an opportunity lost
- 22:34Speaker 3: for them because I think both Banyara and Martin have
- 22:36Speaker 3: left the door open enough that there probably should be
- 22:39Speaker 3: more than just those two in.
- 22:40Speaker 1: The mix, I think for Mark, and I was just
- 22:43Speaker 1: thinking that, oh, we haven't touched on Mark Marquez this
- 22:45Speaker 1: weekend because there's been so much other interesting and exciting
- 22:48Speaker 1: things happening. But Marks Mike caught on fire this weekend,
- 22:52Speaker 1: still manage you get third in the sprint. Obviously, if
- 22:56Speaker 1: that technical the engine didn't blow and he didn't have
- 22:59Speaker 1: that fight, I think that we'd still be saying, oh,
- 23:02Speaker 1: Mark is in the title fight right, because he would
- 23:05Speaker 1: have been on the podium it. You know, it would
- 23:07Speaker 1: have been a lot closer, and I think as frustrating
- 23:11Speaker 1: as it it possibly is, I think Marcez, knowing that
- 23:14Speaker 1: he's going to the Factory team next year, when I
- 23:17Speaker 1: read an article saying that, he was like, you know,
- 23:19Speaker 1: I feel sorry for the team because it's an expensive
- 23:22Speaker 1: thing to replace, Like an engine blowing up, You're like, okay, cool.
- 23:26Speaker 1: He knows that maybe this year he could have potentially,
- 23:30Speaker 1: you know, fought for the title a bit more, even
- 23:32Speaker 1: possibly won it or come second. But he's using it
- 23:35Speaker 1: as a learning year. I think now he's maybe accepted
- 23:39Speaker 1: that and gone, Okay, next year, I'm really going to focus.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Yeah, other than whoever wins the World Championship, I think
- 23:45Speaker 3: to me, he's almost the biggest winner of this year,
- 23:47Speaker 3: whether he finishes third or fourth in the championship. And
- 23:50Speaker 3: when you're a six top world champion in murdor GP,
- 23:53Speaker 3: finishing third or fourth isn't going to exactly get you
- 23:55Speaker 3: that excited. But for me, his biggest victories this year
- 23:58Speaker 3: is he's got himself in bettered into Jucaddi and he
- 24:01Speaker 3: now knows how it works, and he's managed to win
- 24:03Speaker 3: a couple of Grand Prix already. So there's not going
- 24:05Speaker 3: to be that go to the factory team. So when
- 24:07Speaker 3: are you going to win your first race on a
- 24:09Speaker 3: Ducaddi marketing, We've already answered that that box has been
- 24:11Speaker 3: ticked already. So for mine, he knows he's still got
- 24:15Speaker 3: the speed. He still manages to conjure these crazy podiums
- 24:20Speaker 3: out of terrible qualifyings and we're almost taking it for
- 24:22Speaker 3: granted now, and that he's come from outside the top
- 24:24Speaker 3: ten again and finished.
- 24:26Speaker 2: On the podium in a sprint.
- 24:27Speaker 3: To my mind, I reckon that's at least four times
- 24:29Speaker 3: off the top of my head, without really diving into
- 24:31Speaker 3: the stats, that he's done that this year. If any
- 24:33Speaker 3: other rider did that once, we'd be carrying on about
- 24:36Speaker 3: it like it was the greatest thing ever. And we
- 24:37Speaker 3: almost take his ability on first laps for granted. The
- 24:42Speaker 3: replay of the first lap of the sprint was just
- 24:44Speaker 3: comical with the way he picked his way through to
- 24:47Speaker 3: get himself in the top five after one corner. So
- 24:50Speaker 3: it's been a really successful year for him. But the
- 24:55Speaker 3: narrative of next year, I love this for next year
- 24:58Speaker 3: because he's either going to be going in to a
- 25:00Speaker 3: team where Banyai is a three time running world champion,
- 25:04Speaker 3: or he's going to be going into a team where
- 25:05Speaker 3: Banyaya is going to be chasing from losing the title
- 25:08Speaker 3: to Martin. And now he's got this force coming in
- 25:11Speaker 3: on the same bike on the other side of the garage.
- 25:14Speaker 3: It's going to be so good. I'm really looking forward
- 25:16Speaker 3: to see how these last five rounds of this year ago,
- 25:19Speaker 3: but twenty twenty five, Like, I'm literally rubbing my hairs
- 25:22Speaker 3: together because this is going to be so much fun.
- 25:25Speaker 1: You know what I found hilarious this weekend was when
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think it was in qualifying, Peco ran out of
- 25:29Speaker 1: fuel and Marcus gave him the little toe, and I
- 25:33Speaker 1: saw some memes on social media where they're saying they've
- 25:38Speaker 1: Pecko has gone back into the pit box and it's
- 25:40Speaker 1: Peco Valentino's on the phone. He wants to know what
- 25:42Speaker 1: you're doing with the enemy.
- 25:45Speaker 2: That was so funny.
- 25:47Speaker 3: It just so happened to be that Marquez was the
- 25:49Speaker 3: nearest guy on the track after Picko and run out
- 25:51Speaker 3: of fuel. And I'm sure there's a little part of
- 25:53Speaker 3: Peco appreciative of the lift back to the pits as
- 25:56Speaker 3: it were, but he's probably thinking, oh man, this is
- 25:58Speaker 3: going to play out badly on.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Social media year as well.
- 26:00Speaker 3: But yeah, it was very funny, and Barker's Big Markets
- 26:03Speaker 3: he would have just enjoyed. There's like some subtle trolley
- 26:06Speaker 3: guy got there as well.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I thoroughly enjoyed that.
- 26:09Speaker 1: It was very good. I did like that, but we
- 26:13Speaker 1: touched on it earlier and I just want to clarify
- 26:15Speaker 1: I for other people listening if they're unsure. So we
- 26:17Speaker 1: had some potential high pressure penalties or infringements that got
- 26:21Speaker 1: flagged during the cool down lap of the main Grand
- 26:24Speaker 1: Prix that included Pedro Costa. Like we said earlier, Brad
- 26:27Speaker 1: Binda and Taka Nakagami and I kind of mentioned it
- 26:32Speaker 1: a little bit earlier in the fact that we saw
- 26:34Speaker 1: Pedro kind of not celebrating on the podium because unsure
- 26:37Speaker 1: of whether he was going to get that the penalty
- 26:40Speaker 1: sort of in sixteen second penalty, he would have lost
- 26:43Speaker 1: his podium position and relegated down the back of the field.
- 26:48Speaker 1: It's we haven't had a lot of these this year,
- 26:50Speaker 1: which has been really good. But what I think is
- 26:53Speaker 1: so frustrating is the fact that you know, these they
- 26:55Speaker 1: do the podiums and all the celebration and media and
- 26:57Speaker 1: everything straight after, yet were I'm still waiting sitting here
- 27:01Speaker 1: waiting whether you know, are they going to get relegated?
- 27:04Speaker 1: Are they not? And then they did Pedro first, which
- 27:06Speaker 1: is cool, great, but then what about Brad? And then
- 27:08Speaker 1: they did him after attack and we found out that
- 27:10Speaker 1: obviously Pedro and Brad did not get an infringement. I'm
- 27:14Speaker 1: unsure about attacker, so you can answer that one for me.
- 27:17Speaker 1: But there's so much segoes into it, and I understand that,
- 27:21Speaker 1: but as a fan of the sport and the entertainment,
- 27:24Speaker 1: it is so frustrating while you're waiting for the results massively.
- 27:28Speaker 3: So we were laughing before we came on here today
- 27:30Speaker 3: that the only good thing about there being tire pressure
- 27:32Speaker 3: investigations after the race it was happening to at six
- 27:34Speaker 3: pm Australian time rather than about midnight, which was a
- 27:38Speaker 3: win for anyone working on it in these parts. But
- 27:41Speaker 3: I'm sort of torn with this because you know, the
- 27:45Speaker 3: tire pressure rules are controversial, but they are there. Everyone
- 27:48Speaker 3: knows that they are there. You want to get the
- 27:51Speaker 3: results right. You don't want anyone having a position based
- 27:55Speaker 3: off something that they were doing that was illegal. Whether
- 27:57Speaker 3: that's inadvertent or whether it's intentional who it doesn't really
- 27:59Speaker 3: matter true. If it's illegal, it's illegal. If it crosses
- 28:01Speaker 3: the line. It's the amount of time that it takes
- 28:04Speaker 3: to process the results after the race that's the issue
- 28:07Speaker 3: for me. But by the flip side, now, the same token,
- 28:10Speaker 3: you don't want to rush this because you want to
- 28:12Speaker 3: make sure that your adjudication is one hundred percent correct.
- 28:14Speaker 3: So there's no perfect answer to this. The biggest issue
- 28:17Speaker 3: for me is, say we have a live championship decider
- 28:21Speaker 3: in Valencia, and let's say Jorge Martine crosses the line
- 28:25Speaker 3: and he's won the World Championship, and everyone puts on
- 28:28Speaker 3: the championship t shirts and we have the trophy at
- 28:30Speaker 3: everything else. Imagine having this looming dark cloud of all
- 28:35Speaker 3: three riders on the podium are being investigated for high
- 28:37Speaker 3: pressure penalties, and we all sit round and wait for
- 28:39Speaker 3: two hours, and so the occasion in the moment gets lost.
- 28:43Speaker 3: And I would hate for a World Championship to be
- 28:46Speaker 3: decided by a technical infringement because nobody wants to see that.
- 28:49Speaker 3: This is not how international sport generally works. We don't
- 28:52Speaker 3: want it to end this way. So it's difficult with
- 28:55Speaker 3: the timing of these things. The surprising thing for me
- 28:58Speaker 3: about you, but whenever they issue these investigations for high
- 29:01Speaker 3: pressure penalties, they're as good as a penalty normally because
- 29:04Speaker 3: you very rarely see them rescinded or taken back. So
- 29:08Speaker 3: I was actually really surprised that Acosta and Binda both
- 29:11Speaker 3: got to keep their places now. Acostas was because there
- 29:14Speaker 3: was a leaking wheel rim once they had done the tests,
- 29:16Speaker 3: which took about two hours, so at least they came
- 29:19Speaker 3: to the correct decision. But you mentioned Nakagami before. He
- 29:22Speaker 3: had a sixteen second time penalty after he had finished eleventh,
- 29:24Speaker 3: which dropped him to twelfth in the back of the
- 29:26Speaker 3: field because only twelve riders finished, so it didn't change
- 29:29Speaker 3: anyone's life. It gave him one fewer point and gave
- 29:32Speaker 3: Alex Rinns one more point. So Motor GP kind of
- 29:36Speaker 3: got away with it in Indonesia on the weekend because yeah,
- 29:39Speaker 3: it took probably far too long, but at least it
- 29:41Speaker 3: was a correct outcome. But I don't know about you.
- 29:43Speaker 3: I'm just looking at Valencia at the end of the
- 29:45Speaker 3: year going, oh, man, I really hope that if we
- 29:49Speaker 3: get a championship fight in the last round I've had
- 29:51Speaker 3: the last two years, let's settle this on track and
- 29:54Speaker 3: in a timely fashion and so we can enjoy the
- 29:56Speaker 3: moment rather than sitting there going, well, are we going
- 29:58Speaker 3: to get penalties here?
- 30:00Speaker 2: Are we not?
- 30:01Speaker 3: There's a wider issue here with the front tier that
- 30:03Speaker 3: was going to be brought in for next year that
- 30:05Speaker 3: is now not because of a lack of testing and
- 30:07Speaker 3: mischell that aren't ready and the teams aren't ready. That's
- 30:09Speaker 3: almost a separate podcast series, little load of podcasts. But yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 3: it's a difficult one because it's live sport, and the
- 30:16Speaker 3: lasting anybody wants when they've sat and consumed a race
- 30:19Speaker 3: and enjoyed it is to find out three hours later
- 30:21Speaker 3: that the results completely different. So there's got to be
- 30:24Speaker 3: a better way. I don't know what that way is,
- 30:26Speaker 3: but the way it's being done right now, I'm not
- 30:29Speaker 3: sure is the greatest solution.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I agree, And I was just thinking that when you're
- 30:32Speaker 1: talking and going well instead of us like sitting around
- 30:34Speaker 1: waiting for results, could they not going into the following
- 30:38Speaker 1: race to the person has a long light penalty or
- 30:42Speaker 1: they have a grid a three grid position deduction or
- 30:45Speaker 1: something like that where it's like, okay, the results that
- 30:47Speaker 1: come in, you can keep whatever you've got there, but
- 30:50Speaker 1: we're going to hinder you for the next one, so
- 30:52Speaker 1: they can't have just something different.
- 30:55Speaker 3: I agree with you for ninety nine point nine percent
- 30:58Speaker 3: of the season, but what happens if it's the last round?
- 31:00Speaker 2: Then what do we do?
- 31:01Speaker 1: So you have to start from the back of the
- 31:04Speaker 1: credit man.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Yeah, but you can, you can keep your World championship. Yeah,
- 31:09Speaker 4: there's no And that's the issue with this is the
- 31:11Speaker 4: reason we talk about it, because every time you come
- 31:13Speaker 4: up with a solution or a way around it, you
- 31:16Speaker 4: find reasons to pick holes in it. So there's no
- 31:18Speaker 4: perfect answer with this. It's just a really difficult situation.
- 31:23Speaker 4: It would have been a huge injustice for the way
- 31:25Speaker 4: Acosta road over the weekend had he have not been
- 31:27Speaker 4: able to keep that podium, but neither he nor the
- 31:30Speaker 4: team particularly seemed to enjoy it at the time because
- 31:32Speaker 4: they are almost certain that they were going to get
- 31:34Speaker 4: pushed down to I think ninth that would have been
- 31:35Speaker 4: for a costa. So I guess all's well. That ends well,
- 31:38Speaker 4: but a shame for them they didn't get to celebrate
- 31:40Speaker 4: it properly.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Shame for them. But in big Katie m news that
- 31:45Speaker 1: we need to discuss, there has been some changes to management.
- 31:49Speaker 1: So good Dottie, who you quite often will hear talking
- 31:52Speaker 1: with the Krafa or any of the guys on the broadcast.
- 31:57Speaker 1: He has been replaced at the Key Factory team as
- 32:01Speaker 1: team manager and aki Io, who is the team manager
- 32:05Speaker 1: of the lawyers, ktm Io brings a bell. He's going
- 32:09Speaker 1: to step in to manage the factory team. Matt, what's
- 32:13Speaker 1: your thoughts on this? Is this the right move by
- 32:15Speaker 1: ktm I?
- 32:17Speaker 3: Did you enjoy the fact that they sent out the
- 32:19Speaker 3: press release at Goudotti was out on Sunday while all
- 32:22Speaker 3: the Acosta Tigh pressure penalty situation was going on, talking
- 32:24Speaker 3: about burying the lead like the race had finished an
- 32:27Speaker 3: hour before, and it's like, oh, by the way, our
- 32:29Speaker 3: team managers being sacked. But it was kind of the
- 32:31Speaker 3: worst kept secret because it had been discussed openly for
- 32:34Speaker 3: a while.
- 32:35Speaker 2: The achi Io.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Appointment as team manager at KATM is really interesting to
- 32:39Speaker 3: me because he's a guy who we haven't seen him
- 32:43Speaker 3: in Motor GP, but he shaped so many of the
- 32:45Speaker 3: writers that have come through to Motor GP in that
- 32:48Speaker 3: he's been kind of the guy who's the king maker
- 32:51Speaker 3: in the lower classes for a long long time now,
- 32:53Speaker 3: going back as far as Mark Markers and Brad Binder.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Of course, he had Rebby Gardner take that world championship
- 32:58Speaker 3: in his Moto IWO team, and he's also been Jack
- 33:00Speaker 3: Miller's personal manager for the majority of Jack's Premier class career,
- 33:04Speaker 3: so super interesting that he's now stepping up to the
- 33:09Speaker 3: main game. He's got this empire of teams with Moto
- 33:13Speaker 3: two and Moto three that I'm assuming that his son
- 33:15Speaker 3: Nicky will end up runn Nicky was a writer in
- 33:17Speaker 3: his own right back in the day. But anyone that's
- 33:21Speaker 3: worked with Aki, and it's a cliche at a stereotype
- 33:24Speaker 3: with the finish in motorsport. Generally they're pretty economical with
- 33:27Speaker 3: their words. They don't necessarily have airs and grace as
- 33:30Speaker 3: it's just very matter of fact, let's just get on
- 33:33Speaker 3: with this. Here's a clear path, we need to follow.
- 33:35Speaker 2: This, go and do it.
- 33:36Speaker 3: And I can't help but wonder whether that's the right
- 33:40Speaker 3: thing for katm at this time, because quite frankly, Katim
- 33:43Speaker 3: has been very disappointing this year based off what they
- 33:46Speaker 3: did in twenty twenty twenty three. Yes, I've been quite
- 33:49Speaker 3: disappointing this year. No wins, only that one podium for
- 33:52Speaker 3: Brad Binder in the first racing Qatar. So I think
- 33:56Speaker 3: it can only be a positive of having someone who's
- 33:58Speaker 3: a straight shooter like Aki running things. And also, of
- 34:01Speaker 3: course he worked with Petro Acosta when Pedro Coosta was
- 34:04Speaker 3: in Moto II and won a World championship there. So
- 34:07Speaker 3: given what we were saying about twenty minutes ago about
- 34:09Speaker 3: a Costa, you know, KATIM becoming a Costa's team really
- 34:13Speaker 3: next year. I don't think it's a coincidence that someone
- 34:15Speaker 3: who's worked successfully with him in the past is coming
- 34:17Speaker 3: in to run the show. So I don't think it
- 34:20Speaker 3: can be anything but a positive appointment.
- 34:22Speaker 2: But I do wonder.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Whether KATM have bigger issues than simply changing the team manager,
- 34:28Speaker 3: because that's a team that has gone it's stalled out
- 34:31Speaker 3: or gone backwards this year, and that's not what KATIM
- 34:34Speaker 3: will want because they have aspirations for much bigger things
- 34:36Speaker 3: than that.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I think for KTM it could only help, possibly purely
- 34:42Speaker 1: because we spoke about when Ramy was on the podcast,
- 34:46Speaker 1: talking about how KATM tend to handle situations and things
- 34:50Speaker 1: or letting their writers go, and maybe because Achiio does
- 34:54Speaker 1: have quite a good relationship with a lot of these writers,
- 34:57Speaker 1: it might be handled a little bit better rather than
- 35:01Speaker 1: letting go. And we were talking off her about Daniel
- 35:03Speaker 1: Ricardo because obviously that's big news in the Formula one world,
- 35:06Speaker 1: and it seems like sometimes a katm they can just
- 35:11Speaker 1: kick someone to the curve as nicely put, maybe this
- 35:14Speaker 1: is a better way of handling situations.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Well, I think they sort of their philosophy on right.
- 35:20Speaker 3: This is the kind of like light bulbs, like where
- 35:21Speaker 3: one doesn't work. He just done screwed and screwed you
- 35:23Speaker 3: right in there, and see how you go with that.
- 35:25Speaker 3: There's not a lot of personal touch there in the past,
- 35:27Speaker 3: but Aki comes in with a pretty impeccable track record.
- 35:32Speaker 3: He's kind of the king maker of the lower classes,
- 35:34Speaker 3: so definitely got the right CV for it, and it'll
- 35:37Speaker 3: be interesting to see what impact he has once he
- 35:40Speaker 3: gets his feet under the table for next season.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Well, so you guys are still hanging out with us,
- 35:44Speaker 1: we're going to chat about Moto too because we've got
- 35:46Speaker 1: to talk about Center. Made it into Q two, but
- 35:50Speaker 1: that early collision left him with the DNF and it
- 35:53Speaker 1: was sad because he he looked fast all weekend this
- 35:57Speaker 1: weekend Indonesia. It looked like the track suited and he
- 35:59Speaker 1: looked comfortable on the bike. I feel like he could
- 36:02Speaker 1: have been easy in a top ten for the race.
- 36:05Speaker 2: It was all very sad for Australians.
- 36:07Speaker 3: On Sunday, wasn't it at Mandaleka, I felt like getting
- 36:09Speaker 3: the violin and it was also a bit sad. The
- 36:11Speaker 3: good news for center Ages is he at least he
- 36:13Speaker 3: did seven more quarters than Jack Miller. We're looking for positives,
- 36:16Speaker 3: but now, look, it was a shame because he looked
- 36:18Speaker 3: pretty quick the entire weekend qualifying, probably a little bit
- 36:21Speaker 3: lower than he would have thought in sixteenth, but yeah,
- 36:24Speaker 3: got as far as turn ten and in the craziness
- 36:27Speaker 3: of the first lap, as we were talking about before,
- 36:29Speaker 3: his unfortunately came a cropper there. So disappointing for him.
- 36:33Speaker 3: But it was kind of a continuation of a theme
- 36:36Speaker 3: in that we only had one of our four rossies
- 36:38Speaker 3: in the World Championship score points on the weekend.
- 36:39Speaker 2: That was Joel.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Kelso in Moto three, and he was really really unhappy
- 36:44Speaker 3: with how that race was on Sunday for him. Finished eighth,
- 36:48Speaker 3: so he one point eight seconds off the wind, but
- 36:50Speaker 3: he said it was simply not good enough. So he said,
- 36:53Speaker 3: six top tens in a row, but he's just still
- 36:55Speaker 3: that little bit out of the podium fire and it
- 36:58Speaker 3: sounds like he's getting sick of vegan the main pack
- 37:00Speaker 3: but not taking any trophies. Home with him, but it was,
- 37:04Speaker 3: as I was saying before, it's just one of those
- 37:05Speaker 3: difficult weekends for the Aussies where he came home in eighth.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Jacob Rolston had another pretty messy weekend long lap penalty,
- 37:12Speaker 3: finished outside of the points in sixteenth and Herve Pontreal
- 37:16Speaker 3: gave him another rocket after the race, which is something
- 37:18Speaker 3: we talked about after Massano as well. So you had
- 37:21Speaker 3: the the AGSDNF, the Miller dn F and Jacob Rowlson
- 37:24Speaker 3: missing the points. That was a Joel Kelso flying the
- 37:27Speaker 3: flag and he was only half heartedly doing that because
- 37:29Speaker 3: he wasn't massively impressed with what he'd done. So just
- 37:32Speaker 3: one of those weird afternoons, Wasn't.
- 37:33Speaker 1: It weird afternoons? And I do feel for Alston because
- 37:36Speaker 1: he got caught up in that collision earlier on in
- 37:38Speaker 1: the weekend with Daniel Rocado's teammate and he just said
- 37:41Speaker 1: I had no where to go. So he had an
- 37:44Speaker 1: unintentional crash, which I think every time he has these crashes,
- 37:48Speaker 1: and they're not little just slide down the roads, they
- 37:50Speaker 1: look like big eye sides the poor. Yeah, it just
- 37:53Speaker 1: sets him back for another weekend and it just feels
- 37:55Speaker 1: like you can't catch a brake right now.
- 37:57Speaker 3: He just needs a clean weekend. It doesn't even have
- 37:59Speaker 3: to be in a result. He just needs to have
- 38:01Speaker 3: a weekend where he methodically builds and he doesn't come
- 38:04Speaker 3: off and he doesn't get taken out and has a
- 38:07Speaker 3: reasonably clean race. I mean, you would accept a perfectly
- 38:10Speaker 3: you know, vanilla and dull eleventh right now, just to
- 38:13Speaker 3: get things back on track as they were earlier in
- 38:15Speaker 3: the year. And we said this on our podcast last week.
- 38:18Speaker 3: He's on balance. He's probably had pretty much the year
- 38:21Speaker 3: that you would expect. It's just strange that it was
- 38:24Speaker 3: so good so early and it's tailed off so dramatically
- 38:27Speaker 3: since the mid part of the season.
- 38:28Speaker 2: So I think he.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Would take a perfectly acceptable, boring, normal result. And then
- 38:33Speaker 3: of course the race after Japan is he's home grown
- 38:35Speaker 3: Prix and he'll be super.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Pumped for that.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Oh definitely. But guys, if you don't watch Moto three, honestly,
- 38:42Speaker 1: can I recommend that you go and make some time
- 38:45Speaker 1: and watch it because that last lap, oh, it is
- 38:48Speaker 1: some of the best racing you'll ever get to see.
- 38:51Speaker 1: And we love Motor GP, love Motor two, but Moto three,
- 38:54Speaker 1: those kids are going for it NonStop.
- 38:57Speaker 3: And what's amazing to me with it is that if
- 38:59Speaker 3: you only look at championship standings in Moto three and
- 39:01Speaker 3: you saw the lead that David Altzo had and you
- 39:03Speaker 3: can actually win the World Championship this coming Sunday at
- 39:06Speaker 3: Motigi in Japan, you'd think, well, this is a little
- 39:08Speaker 3: bit boring. The same guy seems to win most of
- 39:10Speaker 3: the races. But I think this is why people are
- 39:12Speaker 3: so excited about this kid, in that it's a jungle
- 39:15Speaker 3: out there in Moto three. It's absolutely wild, and you
- 39:19Speaker 3: would think, given the craziness of those races at the front,
- 39:22Speaker 3: how can you have a guy who is able to
- 39:24Speaker 3: win from these positions of disadvantage In the last couple
- 39:28Speaker 3: of laps. He is an absolute killer in the last
- 39:31Speaker 3: couple of laps. I love the way he's going about it,
- 39:33Speaker 3: and you know, there's shades of young Acosta and young
- 39:36Speaker 3: Marquez and this kid. I think he's going to be
- 39:38Speaker 3: someone who's going to have a pretty long and successful
- 39:40Speaker 3: Motor GP career before too long. But the last three
- 39:44Speaker 3: laps of Moto three comes a point where you know,
- 39:47Speaker 3: I take pretty studious notes when I'm reporting on these things,
- 39:49Speaker 3: it comes to the point where you just throw your
- 39:51Speaker 3: hands in the air and say, I don't know what's
- 39:53Speaker 3: going to happen. At this point, I'm just going to
- 39:54Speaker 3: enjoy the ride because it's it's definitely the most entertaining
- 39:58Speaker 3: five minutes of Animoto GP race weekend, the finale of
- 40:00Speaker 3: photo three.
- 40:01Speaker 2: It's awesome, TOV.
- 40:03Speaker 1: The best racing you'll ever find out, La, let me
- 40:06Speaker 1: start it again. The best racing that you'll ever see
- 40:08Speaker 1: on TV. But what I was gonna say is, guess what, guys,
- 40:11Speaker 1: it's back this weekend because the Moto GP heads to Japan,
- 40:16Speaker 1: So for your Indonesian Grand Prix review, that is all
- 40:19Speaker 1: the time we have, but we're gonna be back in
- 40:21Speaker 1: literally a couple of days to talk Japan and I
- 40:24Speaker 1: cannot wait. But don't forget you guys can catch all
- 40:27Speaker 1: the action live and add break free on Fox Sports
