- 1:45And welcome back to the Boundary Corner podcast along with my
- 1:49partners, Brian Siegler, Jonathan Talley and Shelton
- 1:52Moss. I am Curtis Wilson.
- 1:54We are a part of the College Heddle network.
- 1:57And this episode is brought to you by Doctor Jeremy Counts down
- 2:01at Counts Family Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy
- 2:05Three O 1 S Main St. Blacksburg, VA.
- 2:10Well look, everybody decided to show up this week.
- 2:12What y'all doing? Hey, full force, baby, full
- 2:16force. Like Voltron came together.
- 2:24Came together ready, ready, ready to go.
- 2:26Fuck some shit up. Right, let's go.
- 2:28Let's go figure it out. We had a week off.
- 2:31Not we didn't have a week off, but the Hokies had a week off.
- 2:35Yeah, no, we definitely didn't have the week off and you know,
- 2:38and you got a promotion, right? I I did, I did.
- 2:42We're not. We're not going to go too in
- 2:43depth on that yet because it still hasn't been officially
- 2:46announced. On some channels but.
- 2:48Yeah, we're, we're we're excited though.
- 2:49It's it's, it's a, it's a good thing.
- 2:51It's a very good thing and I'm very excited about it.
- 2:53So we'll, we'll make that officially official next go
- 2:57round. But yeah, it's been a it's it's
- 3:01been a much needed buy, as Steven said there.
- 3:04I think, I think the team needed to buy.
- 3:06I think the fans needed to cool off a little bit because we were
- 3:10hot after that last one. And and it doesn't really get
- 3:15any any easier this week. So, you know, we we got a got a
- 3:19road trip down to Durham 7 and 3 Duke.
- 3:24It's going to be, it's going to be a test.
- 3:26It is Wallace Wade Stadium Saturday night, 8 O clock, get
- 3:32everything ready. At least it's at night.
- 3:34Maybe I can enjoy a little bit of the day.
- 3:36Maybe not tonight, but at least a little bit part of the day.
- 3:39I can enjoy it. I hate three 30s.
- 3:41I'm going to tell you, for my health, a 330 game is the
- 3:44absolute worst. If I'm at the game, I love 3:30.
- 3:49If I'm watching it at home I hate 330.
- 3:51Crew at 3:30. So yeah, Shelton, you're awful
- 3:54quiet down there. How's everything going in the
- 3:56new apartment and the new in the new digs?
- 4:00It's been great, man. I'm here in the Berg, the the
- 4:02East Coast Berg, Williamsburg, VA.
- 4:04So kind of getting settled in here to the new job, new place.
- 4:07So I like it a lot. Got some downtime.
- 4:10So I will be in attendance this weekend at Wallace Wade Stadium.
- 4:13I've never been to a game there. I've been to the campus once,
- 4:15but I've never been to a game there.
- 4:16So that'll be that'll be pretty exciting.
- 4:18I can't wait to go. BCP on site.
- 4:21Shelton, are you going to be in the booth?
- 4:23No, I'm just going as. I'm going as.
- 4:25A fan and as a fan this week going to sit in the fan or in
- 4:29the stadium, not up in the booth.
- 4:30That is awesome to hear. Well, as Brian said a few
- 4:34minutes ago, we did not have a game last week.
- 4:36Again, much of the detriment are good to your everybody's
- 4:39healthier. So there are no truths to tell,
- 4:42maybe some lies later on, but no truths to tell right now.
- 4:46So what we're going to do is we're going to kick it right
- 4:49off. We have a good a, a, a podcast
- 4:54colleague of sorts you can say who's going to tell us a little
- 4:57bit about know the enemy with Duke and we've got pull them on
- 5:01here. We've got Ben Bird who is with
- 5:04Duke Bull city coordinators. Ben, how are you doing tonight,
- 5:07man? Ben, you're on mute.
- 5:11I got you here. Control.
- 5:14There we go. Sorry about that.
- 5:15I'm doing well. How are you guys doing?
- 5:18Doing great man, glad to glad for you to join us.
- 5:20And and as we were chatting offline here before we punched
- 5:25live, we found out that that Ben knows one of our good buddies,
- 5:29our our music man, Jason Long. So it's it's funny how small the
- 5:33world can get when you, you know, reach out and, you know,
- 5:36connect with different people in the sports world and all of a
- 5:38sudden, you know, somebody that was your neighbors with somebody
- 5:41you've known since middle school.
- 5:43Yeah, that's right. Jason and Liz and my wife, we
- 5:48all knew each other, used to live next to each other, saw
- 5:50each other a couple weekends ago, had a good time.
- 5:53And so one of the good things about being in Roanoke is you
- 5:56get to know everybody. There you go.
- 5:58Jason advised me and Brian here in a text that it was a porch
- 6:02picking party where y'all called up a little music there.
- 6:05That's correct. We played some old time tunes.
- 6:07There were 123 and maybe five of us.
- 6:10Nice. Good.
- 6:12What do you play? I play guitar.
- 6:14I play rhythm guitar. OK, nice.
- 6:18Very nice. So Ben, obviously you know we
- 6:21were talking a little bit before you've been doing this about
- 6:23five years, give a little background about yourself and
- 6:26how because you're a one man operation, right?
- 6:29Yes, so the website's Bull City coordinators and you can find me
- 6:36on most social media accounts at Duke FB coverage.
- 6:42I started doing this in 2019 when the Cutcliffe era started
- 6:49going off the rails after the jump pass against North
- 6:53Carolina. Over time, it evolved into a
- 6:57podcast because I got tired of writing angry, frustrated
- 7:05complaints on the Internet. I just didn't think that was
- 7:08really productive. So I tried to be a little bit
- 7:11more positive, a little more upbeat, and that resulted in
- 7:17podcasting where I was interviewing former players.
- 7:20After that, I got to a point where I started interviewing
- 7:26last season, more journalists and having other bloggers and
- 7:30podcasters who cover team come on, which led into being on the
- 7:35part of the College Huddle network, which you guys are as
- 7:37well. So that's kind of what it's
- 7:39evolved into, altering the format again, because of the
- 7:45unplanned evolutions of things. My podcast has a spin off called
- 7:50the Classical Antiquity Side Quest in which I interviewed
- 7:54professors various periods of time throughout ancient ancient
- 8:01Rome and Greece in the accounts for those on social media.
- 8:06I deleted the Twitter account for it because it was just
- 8:08getting spammed by bots. It's really annoying.
- 8:10But on blue sky it's antiquity pod and I've gotten a lot of
- 8:15traction over there. So if you want to find me, go
- 8:18check out antiquity pod on blue sky.
- 8:22And the the blue sky classics thing is real.
- 8:26It's big and there's almost, I'm not getting barraged by
- 8:29pornography bots like I was on Twitter.
- 8:34It's it's worked out pretty well.
- 8:35So you can you can subscribe, like and subscribe at our
- 8:39YouTube channel to both podcasts.
- 8:42Nice, nice. So you got a, you got a couple
- 8:44history majors on here as well. So that definitely, you know,
- 8:50you got some interest piqued with that.
- 8:52So always fun to like kind of mix a little bit of everything
- 8:57in in in your social media persona there and kind of bring
- 9:00in all your all your passions into one place.
- 9:03So I can appreciate that. So so we got a game this weekend
- 9:08and you know, we got with you were like, Hey, you want to come
- 9:11on, talk a little bit about what your team does well, you know,
- 9:15some areas that they can improve and kind of help us preview what
- 9:19to expect this Saturday. So we'll, we'll kick it off with
- 9:22defense first. You know, you got defensive
- 9:25coordinator Jonathan Parker, you got Manny Diaz's obviously got
- 9:28his, his fingerprints, his DNA all over that defense.
- 9:32Tell us a little bit about what the defense is about from a
- 9:35scheme perspective and you know, kind of what some of the
- 9:38strengths and weaknesses are of that scheme.
- 9:42Well, as far as the scheme, what Jonathan Patchy does and Manny
- 9:46Diaz do is they get after the ball aggressively.
- 9:51They bring pressure at the right time.
- 9:53They kind of confuse their blitzes and their coverages.
- 9:56But I think primarily what you see is a lot of the plays that
- 10:00they have had a lot of success on or more coaching, small
- 10:03techniques like punching the ball out, generating turnovers,
- 10:07things like that. Tackling is really good.
- 10:11You see in a lot of four, two base defenses, the secondary has
- 10:15been a lot. I thought they were going to be
- 10:18OK, but it's been a lot better than I've I've expected,
- 10:21primarily because Terry Moore, who's a converted running back
- 10:24at safety, just has been in the right spot a lot.
- 10:28And I know they say you can coach that, but really you can't
- 10:31because the ball's got to happen to go there too and then deflect
- 10:34the right way and land in his hands.
- 10:36It's just been for the Blue Devil fans out there and the
- 10:39guys who might remember Devon Edwards 2013 season where he was
- 10:43always in the right place at the right time.
- 10:45That didn't get repeated. He still had great plays, but it
- 10:49wasn't like that again. OK, Chandler Rivers has been a
- 10:54big help. So is Kendi Charles, the
- 10:58linebackers, Nicholas Bergeron, Howard Freeman, all those guys
- 11:03have been playing great. But this is a defense that just
- 11:06brings pressure, is aggressive on every down and likes to get
- 11:12after either the quarterback or the running back behind the line
- 11:15of scrimmage. I think we're leading the nation
- 11:17in tackles for loss. We're right up at the top.
- 11:20Against NC State, the 1st 2 plays of scrimmage for the
- 11:23Wolfpack were tackles for loss, one of which was the safety.
- 11:28I mean, this unit's going to get after you.
- 11:30And I like a lot of teams. You have a running quarterback,
- 11:33it's going to cause problems. But overall, Dukes and Ben don't
- 11:37break defense and we'll make plays.
- 11:39All right, let's, let's talk about that pressure because when
- 11:42I started looking at it and the games I watched, plus just
- 11:45looking at the stats and data, Wesley Wilshams jumped out.
- 11:48You know, he had a great game against MC State coming off the
- 11:52edge. They're creating pressure sacks.
- 11:54You're also right. Duke is stirred in the nation
- 11:56and tackled for loss. When you watch him, what do you
- 11:59feel his best pass rush move is? Yeah, it's hard to say because I
- 12:04mean, I I don't, I don't pay to subscribe to watch and break the
- 12:08videos down and really slow it down.
- 12:10But what those guys do generally is they're just fast.
- 12:13They're in great shape. And I think it's primarily
- 12:16through coach feely the what most places call strength and
- 12:21conditioning. I think Duke calls it athletic
- 12:23performance. I don't know, whatever you want
- 12:25to call. I mean, who cares?
- 12:26I mean. Yeah.
- 12:29I I mean, I don't want to upset the Duke football account that's
- 12:31following me on my blue sky account now, but who gives a
- 12:34shit what terminology we use for it, OK?
- 12:36I mean, really. So that is what it is, right?
- 12:39Right. They're just really fast and
- 12:41really strong. And one of the things they talk
- 12:43about in the fourth quarter is dragging teams into the sewer,
- 12:48which is not a reference to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and
- 12:51Charlie and those guys going down on the sewer, OK?
- 12:54It's a reference to we are going to bring you down here.
- 12:57We're going to get dirty, we're going to get physical, we're
- 13:00going to beat you, OK? And So what you have to look out
- 13:04for is a lot of Duke teams historically as the season went
- 13:08on and late in games would tire out, OK?
- 13:14They would tire out because they were exhausted, because they
- 13:18didn't have a lot of depth, the strength and conditioning wasn't
- 13:20as good, and they wouldn't be able to compete through all four
- 13:23quarters, much less all four parts of the season, Right?
- 13:29But that's not the case now. I mean, I was talking to Steve
- 13:33Weissman at the News and Observer on our podcast
- 13:35recently. This team's got like 7 guys who
- 13:38can play on the line. And that's unheard of for a Duke
- 13:41team. I mean, they rotate guys in and
- 13:43out, give them chances to play. So I'm way off of your question,
- 13:48but I think what Williams is really good at in the rest of
- 13:51the line is that just being physically strong and fast and
- 13:56not tiring out and getting worn out.
- 14:01Good stuff. So you got Williams out there.
- 14:03Who else should we kind of look out for on that defensive line
- 14:07for Duke? One guy who's come along real
- 14:11well as the season has gone on is is Candy Charles.
- 14:15Not that he started slow or anything, but you could tell he
- 14:18was making his presence felt there it early.
- 14:22It may not have been shown up in the stat line, but the last
- 14:24several games the guy's just been doing really well.
- 14:27He is a guy that you have got to control right there in the
- 14:30middle. He was a transfer coming in from
- 14:32Liberty and he has really, really played well.
- 14:36I mean, he he would be a guy that you've got to find a way to
- 14:39slow down and double or something to keep him from
- 14:44getting at getting at the at, at the quarterback or getting into
- 14:50where the running backs going to be getting the hand off on, on
- 14:54any RPO you're trying to run. Nice.
- 14:58We'll pivot on the linebackers here.
- 15:00Oh, go ahead, Curtis. What you.
- 15:01Got Oh, no, no, I was going to actually last about the
- 15:02linebackers, too. Go ahead, Brian.
- 15:04Yeah, I was going to say. So you kind of talked about, you
- 15:07know, transfers there and yeah, I want to talk to you a little
- 15:11bit about that because it looks like, you know, Duke, at least
- 15:13over the last several years, you know, going back to Elko and
- 15:15now. So with Manny Diaz really
- 15:19hitting the transfer portal pretty heavy to to feel the the
- 15:22the depth pieces kind of those first and 2nd lines on the on
- 15:26the roster there. And you got a couple more at the
- 15:28linebacker position there with with what Howard and and
- 15:32Nicholas, correct. So, you know, looking at those
- 15:37guys and just thinking about how Duke has has done has been
- 15:42pretty successful in the last few years with kind of
- 15:44backfilling these positions through the portal.
- 15:47And then you, you know, compare that to to what's happened
- 15:50elsewhere. A lot of success considering the
- 15:52number of replacements there. But you know, these these
- 15:56linebackers, along with Bergeron and Freeman, from a statistical
- 16:01standpoint, they're all kind of, you know, jumbled in together.
- 16:03They're a little bit kind of who's the the biggest key to a
- 16:06successful game from the linebacker position.
- 16:09Well, I think you got to be looking at a guy like Ozzie
- 16:11Nicholas. He has played really well.
- 16:14He came in from Princeton. He's really smart.
- 16:17He can knock the ball loose. He can make some plays.
- 16:20He's been hurt a couple of times this year.
- 16:22Nick Morris, I can't remember the last time he played and
- 16:25there was some concern about not having him available, but the
- 16:28other guys have stepped in and played very, very well.
- 16:32And Freeman, not that Freeman has played poorly or anything,
- 16:36but it was to some extent A1 1 1/2 man show last year with him
- 16:41and everybody was kind of looking at Freeman as he was
- 16:44going to be the guy to do everything.
- 16:46And I'm not knocking him, but the other folks have really done
- 16:50a lot more as far as noticeable impact plays.
- 16:53But Freeman's a guy that can go in and get you 10 tackles easy a
- 16:56game. I think it's just part of the
- 16:59system that that's designed and nobody's upset about it.
- 17:02But you know, those guys can play really, really well.
- 17:05Bergeron too. But but Nicholas is a guy that
- 17:09you've got to watch out for if you're Virginia Tech.
- 17:13All right. Note taking.
- 17:15That'd be Ozzie Nicholas. So you gave us a lot of good
- 17:17points about the defense there. You took my question away on
- 17:21Moore and Rivers because obviously those two guys popped
- 17:24out and you telling me I'm worried about Terry Moore
- 17:28because of the way you talked about how he gets in there and
- 17:31the way when I think of that and I know Terry's a safety, like
- 17:34that's the guy coming up in the line doing that, knocking it
- 17:38loose. And you know, he's already I
- 17:40believe I'm not mistaken. He's already got a couple forced
- 17:43fumbles this year along with picks.
- 17:46So you you answered my question for me in your monologue there
- 17:50at the beginning, Ben. So let's kick off.
- 17:53Obviously we know y'all got a really good defense because
- 17:55that's Manny's 48. I want to go to the offensive
- 17:57side of the ball, offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer
- 18:01scheme, What does he do? What do you like?
- 18:04What do you dislike when you look at this offense?
- 18:07The one thing before we get to that, I do want to say watch out
- 18:09for Chandler Rivers in the secondary.
- 18:12He he will do something in this game on Saturday, at least one
- 18:18play. If you throw to him, he will
- 18:20find a way to make you pay for it.
- 18:22But to turn to the offense, Brewer runs a system that's very
- 18:26similar to what is run at SMU with one critical exception,
- 18:31which is Malik Murphy does not run the ball.
- 18:35He does not run much, just it's not who he is.
- 18:40So he did get a rushing touchdown.
- 18:42It was ugly, but it was still a rushing, rushing touchdown
- 18:45against NC State. He's run a little bit more as
- 18:49the season has gone on. Earlier this season, there was a
- 18:53lot of get the ball out and get it out fast.
- 18:56But there have been injuries at the tight end position which
- 18:59have slowed things down as far as how quickly the offense would
- 19:05like to go because some of those routes over the middle are not
- 19:08there. I'm not trying to critique a
- 19:12third string guy, but he's third string for a reason and you
- 19:15can't expect him to be as developed and talented as well.
- 19:22Talent's not the right word, but you can't expect him to put on
- 19:25the show that Nikki Dalmolin was capable of putting on.
- 19:28I think Dalmolin was a fifth year returning senior before
- 19:32unfortunately, his college career came to an end with a
- 19:34with a bad injury, so that slowed things down some.
- 19:39They do like to throw to the tight end.
- 19:41Jake Taylor's getting more comfortable, so we'll see.
- 19:46He's he's, he's gotten a lot better.
- 19:48He didn't play much last year and honestly, he wasn't slotted
- 19:52to play a whole lot this year. So how fast you can bring them
- 19:58along. You know, next year he could
- 19:59take that big leap. He's just got a lot he's got to
- 20:02learn. It's a new system, new coaching
- 20:03staff. It's a lot for the guy.
- 20:05But the rest of the offense, you've got really good receivers
- 20:12at with Eli Penkel with. Obviously Jordan Moore who made
- 20:18a great catch against Miami, that one handed grab and then
- 20:22the catch against NC State for the touchdown.
- 20:24Those guys are really, really good.
- 20:27And then to keep with an inside Duke football online joke, don't
- 20:33sell your Samir Hagen stock. It's rising, OK?
- 20:38He's really fast. He can get on some underneath
- 20:41routes, he can burn you, and he can be right where he needs to
- 20:43be. I don't want to say the ball's
- 20:50been spread around a whole, whole lot this year because
- 20:53Jordan Moore's been had been on a pitch count for a long time,
- 20:55which impacted the rest of the offense and what could happen.
- 20:59But as long as he's healthy, I expect the ball to be thrown
- 21:03around a lot because the offense is going to gravitate or the
- 21:06defense, excuse me, is going to gravitate towards Jordan Moore,
- 21:09which is going to open up Eli Pankel, which is going to open
- 21:12up Samir Hagens and some of the other guys to perhaps get some
- 21:17touches. And then it's going to come down
- 21:18to the running game and how successful that can be, which is
- 21:21a little bit of a longer discussion.
- 21:23All right. You, you, you highlight Jordan
- 21:25Moore there. What is he?
- 21:28What is his best attribute? What is he?
- 21:31Look at him. What?
- 21:32What, What's the thing he's going to do that's going to hurt
- 21:34you the most? Well, with Jordan Moore, it's
- 21:37his, you know, one of the things that I like about what Brewer is
- 21:42doing, because I didn't really fully answer that question and I
- 21:45apologize. I think Brewer's doing a really
- 21:47good job and how you utilize Jordan Moore is a good example
- 21:51of that. Even with the injuries this team
- 21:53has had to navigate, what Jordan Moore can do is get down the
- 21:57field. He can get open and he can go up
- 22:00and get the ball. If it's thrown high, he's hard
- 22:03to defend. He is a converted quarterback.
- 22:08Years ago in a spring game under Cutcliffe, I saw him with the
- 22:11offense and I said this guy's going to be special.
- 22:13He's got it. There's just something about it.
- 22:15I didn't think he was going to be this good, mind you, but I
- 22:18thought he was going to be a good player to Duke, and he
- 22:20turned out to be. He's hard to defend.
- 22:23He can go up and get the ball. And that's what Brewer likes to
- 22:26do. And you know, there's been some
- 22:27complaints about Brewer this year, but I think when Jordan
- 22:31Moore is healthy, this offense looks a lot better.
- 22:33And you can see what Brewer wants to do with the ball, which
- 22:37is spread it over the field, take shots down the field to
- 22:41open up the run game and really let the quarterback air it out
- 22:44at times. So if you see man coverage, if
- 22:46you see single man coverage, watch that ball go deep.
- 22:50Kelly, go ahead, man. You're, you're freezing.
- 22:52Is you're about to ask your question?
- 22:55Oh yeah, you know how it is. Internet crazy now here, but I
- 22:58was just going to ask about the offensive line.
- 23:00When you talk about the running game, you know, Murphy's had a
- 23:04pretty good year. Offensive coordinator has really
- 23:07utilized, you know, you guys as talents that you have there.
- 23:11So how does your offensive line kind of work?
- 23:14And who's the key to the offensive line?
- 23:18Yeah, that is a really good question.
- 23:20I don't know how best to answer that.
- 23:23The the offensive line has been a little bit of a work in
- 23:27progress because there were a lot of new guys coming in.
- 23:31But there's been guys like Pickett on the line who've been,
- 23:35who've been very good, who've been playing very well.
- 23:37Bruno Fina's been there as well. And there's a good number of
- 23:41other guys. And actually what we saw against
- 23:42NC State was the line went to, they had six guys on the line to
- 23:48help with pass blocking and some of the down the field routes and
- 23:53it it worked. I don't know how much we're
- 23:55going to see that again. I think that was more of a
- 23:58calculated choice just to throw the ball against State, but
- 24:01we'll see. The offensive line, I don't want
- 24:04to say has done poorly, but what we saw for a good part of the
- 24:07season was this focus on shutting the run game down and
- 24:13making Murphy beat you at the pass.
- 24:16So * Thomas has done well at times.
- 24:20Peyton Jones, who I think is going to play at times.
- 24:23Jacques Moore may actually play this game.
- 24:27It's unclear. He's going to red shirt, but
- 24:29he's got one more game of eligibility.
- 24:31So it'll either be this game or Wake.
- 24:34If he plays. It could just be fluff from the
- 24:38coaching staff, who knows, But I think for the offensive line to
- 24:43do well, it's going to depend to some extent on what Virginia
- 24:46Tech decides to do. If Virginia Tech says we're just
- 24:49going to load up the box, put eight guys in the box, OK, and
- 24:54we're going to bring our safeties down, you know, it's
- 24:57going to be hard to run against that.
- 24:59I don't care how good of a line you are.
- 25:01But if if the safeties drop back like Carolina, like in the
- 25:05Carolina game where that there were two high safeties * Thomas
- 25:10and Peyton Jones, who should be back from his injury that he
- 25:14suffered against State. Excuse me, I expect, you know, I
- 25:20expect some success there running the ball, especially if
- 25:28if Murphy keeps it on one or two RP OS.
- 25:31If he keeps it and then the hokey defense has to be honest,
- 25:35that's going to really help the offensive line.
- 25:37If he decides he doesn't want to run, then they just key in on
- 25:40the running back. You know, we'll see.
- 25:41So I think how well the offensive line is going to do is
- 25:45going to be more a focus of what the Hokies defensive strategy is
- 25:49going to be. If the Hokies say we're going to
- 25:52make you throw to beat us, the offensive line will pass block.
- 25:57They're very good at that, that unit's good at that.
- 26:00But how much they're going to be able to run out of that if
- 26:02you've got 7 or 8 guys in the box all night, I don't know.
- 26:05Sheldon, you had some you wanted to add, right?
- 26:08Yeah. So you know, typically when
- 26:09we're playing a team like to look at kind of the the stats,
- 26:11advanced stats and kind of see what they do well, what they
- 26:13don't do so well. So looking at Duke, the one
- 26:16thing that stands out to me on offense, 3rd and 4th down
- 26:21conversion rate put together, they rank 132nd, just 29% on
- 26:25those late downs. Now, as we know, a lot of it has
- 26:28to do with the the, the distance that you're facing on 3rd downs.
- 26:31You know, if you're in 3rd lung, obviously much less likely you
- 26:34convert the down from your perspective.
- 26:36I know the online struggle a little bit.
- 26:37Running game hasn't been super efficient.
- 26:39What do you think has been the big bugaboo on 3rd downs and
- 26:41why? Duke has just been so incredibly
- 26:43inefficient there. I think a lot of it probably
- 26:46early in the season has been struggling to get the field
- 26:54position that you'd like. There was a lot of incomplete
- 26:57run for two yards and then you're in 3rd and eight.
- 27:00A run for three yards, you're in 3rd and seven.
- 27:02That's had a lot to do with it. I also think, again, Murphy is
- 27:06still pretty darn young and he he's developing.
- 27:14He's developing and growing as a quarterback and he's looking
- 27:18more comfortable with each game. So I think that's had a lot to
- 27:21do with it. I don't think historically Duke
- 27:24has been particularly good on those yards for a while.
- 27:29I I'd have to go back and look because I'd I try not to get too
- 27:33crazy into those kind of statistics, but I think that
- 27:38that has a lot to do with it. I'm looking at the box score
- 27:41from last game. I'm trying to pull it up here,
- 27:45but this might be accurate. Duke was zero of nine on 3rd
- 27:49down. That's hard to believe, but wow,
- 27:52no, it's not. I think it's probably more a
- 27:55game of of an issue of field position more than anything
- 27:59else. And as far as where they are on
- 28:02those down in distances they can when they want to.
- 28:08Well, I could go on a long tangent about not putting
- 28:11quarterbacks under center. I'm not going to do that, I
- 28:16won't, but I do think some of that plays into it.
- 28:18Although they did put Murphy under center a couple of times.
- 28:22That could change a little bit this week though on some of
- 28:26those third down plays because last game Grayson Loftus came in
- 28:32for a play and a play or two and ran the ball.
- 28:37It would not surprise me if we see a small Loftus or Bealing
- 28:42package for backups. Loftus is going to red shirt
- 28:45this year. He can play these next two games
- 28:49and he can come in and be like a Thomas Sirk or Brandon Connect
- 28:52type. And if that happens then you're
- 28:56looking at a very different dynamic.
- 28:58Loftus is a little bit of a gunslinger too.
- 29:00He can throw better than Sirk or Connect good I think, but he can
- 29:06run real well too. Let me ask this, Ben, and does
- 29:11it give you pause for concern that the only game this year
- 29:17that Duke played against the top five pass rush was against
- 29:20Carolina, A top 25 pass rush was Carolina allowed five sacks in
- 29:24that game. When you start hearing APR, you
- 29:29start hearing the names of Virginia Tech, currently 10th.
- 29:32How much does that give you concern?
- 29:34Because I look at Duke's numbers, it's like, wow, that's
- 29:36a great pass rush. And I looked at the Carolina
- 29:38game and it's like, that's the best pass rush they've seen.
- 29:42Malik Murphy was on his back a lot during that game.
- 29:46I have a hard time believing North Carolina's pass rush was
- 29:49that good. Is that accurate?
- 29:51I'm not doubting you, but I just.
- 29:53North Carolina ranks, I'll get it for you right here in team
- 29:57sacks they are. I got to get it back to it
- 30:01because it was on another screen.
- 30:02Of course they are the 5th rated pass rush or team sacks in the
- 30:07country. Text 10th.
- 30:14On on the Carolina one, I think, I think we got to get a recount
- 30:18on that. Jump pull the data for me man.
- 30:23No, no, no. I'm not questioning it, I'm not
- 30:26questioning it. I just that just kind of speaks
- 30:28to. It doesn't feel like it.
- 30:31I I I agree with you from that respect.
- 30:33Coordinator there it was at Georgia Tech.
- 30:35We call him a can of tuna online Jeff.
- 30:37Collins, Oh, Jeff Collins. It seems like yeah, the can of
- 30:42Tunas team should be doing a little bit better with that soft
- 30:45schedule that they've had all season.
- 30:48You know, the thing that worries me about playing Virginia Tech
- 30:52is Virginia Tech always has a lot of talent.
- 30:54They always have tall guys in the secondary.
- 30:59I think though, Murphy, what we were at that game, the offense
- 31:06struggled early but picked it up late and he's a different
- 31:12quarterback I think now than he was at the beginning of the
- 31:14season. I'm not too worried about the
- 31:19Carolina game as a reference point for it, but I am worried
- 31:22about anytime you play Virginia Tech, there's always a good deal
- 31:25of talent there that you have to be worried about, right?
- 31:29That's what that's what worries me about it more than anything
- 31:32else. It's just the talent level that
- 31:34Virginia Tech will always have or should always have.
- 31:38You know what it's it's always fun to have someone on that can
- 31:42shit on Carolina with you. So thank you.
- 31:46I'm just going to. I'm going to say it, You know,
- 31:49look, this was a year you people are talking about.
- 31:53Oh, Carolina's turned a corner. They're back.
- 31:55If they don't win 8 games, there's no excuse for it.
- 31:58They haven't played. I mean, if they had Georgia Tech
- 32:02schedule right now, they would not have won it.
- 32:06They would not have won a game. We know this.
- 32:08Come on, let's be real. Yeah, when when our friend from
- 32:11Georgia Tech from rec talk was on here, he, he he got the whole
- 32:15Jeff Collins thing rolling. So it's, it's it's been a fun
- 32:19year to kind of shit on the UNC defense despite them apparently
- 32:23being a, a fairly good team when it comes to team sacks, though,
- 32:27apparently most of those came against UVA and I guess Duke at
- 32:31this point, if we're if we're looking at the the the
- 32:34accumulated sacks, though. But you talked a lot about Malik
- 32:36Murphy and, and kind of what he does with his legs, or in this
- 32:39case doesn't do with his legs. I mean, he looks like he's he's
- 32:42a pretty good athlete when he does decide to run, but it just
- 32:45doesn't look like it's it's motivated part of his game.
- 32:48So talk about that a little bit. I wouldn't quite put it that
- 32:53way. When he runs, it's not pretty.
- 32:59I'd say a little bit of wiggle. I'm not necessarily saying he
- 33:01looks like he's going to go out there and and you know, put a
- 33:05track meter or anything. I.
- 33:06Appreciate that you're trying to put a positive spin on it, but
- 33:09but it does not look, you know, you remember when Charlie Batch
- 33:13couldn't. Slide.
- 33:14OK. All right.
- 33:16That's fair. It's like that, except Charlie
- 33:19Batch had a more natural run in motion to him so.
- 33:23Yeah, it'll hit you in the giddy up.
- 33:25Well, I don't want to quite say it's like Luigi and Mario 2 with
- 33:30the weird jump legs, but it never looks good when Murphy is
- 33:34running. So.
- 33:37But that's not what he's there. That's not what he's there for.
- 33:39OK, that's not what he's there for.
- 33:41But what what he can do. He can throw the ball deep.
- 33:46He can put touch on it. You know, he can He can move the
- 33:49ball all over the field. He can hit short routes, He can
- 33:51hit wrong long routes. He's very good at throwing, at
- 33:57throwing the football. And if he sees single man
- 34:01coverage, he's going to give his receivers a shot.
- 34:05So he's a guy you got to worry about and he has run some.
- 34:10And I think that that is something that if he does just a
- 34:14couple of times a game, the defense is going to have to keep
- 34:16honest. But you know, he's been a it's,
- 34:20it took him a little bit to get his sea legs under him.
- 34:22And I think he's got them under him now these last several
- 34:25games. So I think we're all excited
- 34:26about it. And if you look at how he
- 34:29played, the Florida State game was more by design.
- 34:33He didn't do a lot. But SMU, Miami and NC State,
- 34:36he's had three really good games.
- 34:38I know with Miami, he had the picks.
- 34:40I think one or two of those might have been bounces,
- 34:42deflections off hands of receivers.
- 34:46That happens sometimes. So he's looked a lot better of
- 34:50of light. Yeah, and he, you know, looking
- 34:56at him throw the ball, I mean, he's got a cannon of a right
- 34:58arm. So the the ball definitely gets
- 35:00out there and he can make all those throws.
- 35:02So if he, if he can give us, you know, any, any sort of trouble
- 35:07with the with the decoy, with his legs there, I think that
- 35:10that could be interesting and open some things up for you
- 35:13guys, both in the running game and the passing game.
- 35:17And then as, as we kind of wrap it up here and you kind of look
- 35:21to Saturday night, what's your one big key like as you're
- 35:24sitting here, it's probably going to be 11/11/15.
- 35:29And the big key one way or the other is.
- 35:34Not to simplify it, but turnovers and field position, I
- 35:41think the team that can control the turnovers, again, this is
- 35:45ground breaking stuff. No one will tell you this,
- 35:47right? This is football's a lot simpler
- 35:51than we like it to be. But I think the team that
- 35:54controls the turnover battle and the particularly the field
- 36:00position, the field position can come in a number of different
- 36:02ways. It can be done by pushing the
- 36:08Hokies back by tackles for loss or it can be done by the kicking
- 36:12game. So those are the two things I'll
- 36:15be watching come Saturday primarily.
- 36:17I mean, if if Duke's in that backfield causing havoc, I think
- 36:21it's going to be a good good evening.
- 36:23It's going to be a good night for the Blue Devils.
- 36:24Not not so much of a good night for my buddy Chris, who's coming
- 36:28down to the game with me, but we'll see.
- 36:30He's a he's a Hokie. Hey, you're, you're in Hokie
- 36:33country there in Roanoke. So it's probably probably a
- 36:36bunch of your buddies wear the maroon and orange on a regular
- 36:38basis. Good number of them.
- 36:42We're here, man. Well, listen, I mean you, you
- 36:45tell the truth about that man. Because you know Duke, you guys,
- 36:48your turnover margin is top five in the country.
- 36:51Your turnover gained is top five in the country.
- 36:54So you know, I, I, I don't think you're lying about that
- 36:58whatsoever. But Ben, man, it's been a
- 37:00pleasure talking with you tonight.
- 37:03Real quick, give you one more time.
- 37:05Tell everybody where they can find you, social media,
- 37:08websites, all that good stuff. All right, before I do that, I
- 37:11just want to say one thing about comparative schedules for North
- 37:14Carolina and and Georgia Tech. Go back to my point for this
- 37:18fraud Tar Heel team. They played Minnesota, Minnesota
- 37:22whoopty frickin do OK Charlotte, North Carolina Central.
- 37:26I'm not going to knock those guys.
- 37:28I love them. James Madison in a program
- 37:31transitional year, OK. In a basketball game.
- 37:35Oh, exactly. And some Carolina fan before the
- 37:37Duke game tried to talk smack to us about it.
- 37:40I said we're going for 71, shut your mouth.
- 37:43And then the only the only games that they have had to play that
- 37:48are tough this year, OK, that you look at the schedule are
- 37:52Duke, Pitt, Georgia Tech. OK, now, Georgia Tech had to go
- 37:58to your house, right, To play Virginia Tech?
- 38:01Yeah. Who?
- 38:02Who does North Carolina get instead?
- 38:04Virginia, The Cavaliers, not a real football team.
- 38:07Come on, let's. Get things we can.
- 38:10Agree wearing pants. Things we can agree on.
- 38:13All right, I mean for real, just compare those schedule.
- 38:16This was all the ACC helping Mac Brown out, Brown out.
- 38:19Pathetic. Just disgusting.
- 38:21Anyway, all right, so where can you find us?
- 38:24You, you or find me? You can find me at
- 38:26bullcitycoordinators.com. Check out the YouTube channel
- 38:30which I think is at Duke FB coverage.
- 38:32Most all the socials are there. You can get both the podcasts,
- 38:35the Bull City Coordinators Duke Football coverage podcast, and
- 38:39the Classical Antiquity side quest which covers topics from
- 38:42ancient Greece and Rome. Do about one episode a month.
- 38:46I've got 2 I need to edit and a couple more I need to record.
- 38:50That'll get me into next year and on the socials for that one.
- 38:55Primarily just blue Sky at Antiquity pod.
- 38:59For the three of you who are decentralized weirdos who hate
- 39:05over over control of technology, I'd have Mastodon accounts.
- 39:09I don't really do a whole lot with it, but at Duke FB coverage
- 39:12on Mastodon and at Antiquity Pod on Mastodon as well.
- 39:16And the Instagram account for Duke football coverage just has
- 39:22both. I don't, I don't have two
- 39:23Instagram accounts. So that if you just just check
- 39:27out pretty much any social that Duke FB coverage or at antiquity
- 39:30pod, it's a great, a great merging of football and the
- 39:35classics. So you can hopefully find
- 39:40something that you enjoy. I got interested in ancient Rome
- 39:43later in life. So it's just kind of something
- 39:46I've picked up in my 30s. Nice.
- 39:48It's always good to have a little bit of a passion project,
- 39:50especially when you pick up a little bit later in life.
- 39:53Especially when you deal with the typical misery of Duke
- 39:56football over the years. Ben, we again appreciate you
- 40:02having on. Thank you for making us laugh.
- 40:04Thank you for making us say fuck you VA, fuck Carolina, because
- 40:10we appreciate that. And maybe the next time when we
- 40:12roll through Roanoke, we'll hit up Jason, We'll hit up you and
- 40:16go to what is it, the food truck?
- 40:18Mama Jeans is Mama Jeans the food truck.
- 40:21Oh man, that's right. Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 40:24Yeah, I, I that stumbled them on Facebook one day and their food
- 40:28looks amazing. So I'm going to find that truck
- 40:30next time I go to Roanoke. There you go.
- 40:32Well, that'd be good. I'd love to catch up with you
- 40:36guys and Shelton. You said you were coming to the
- 40:39game. That's correct.
- 40:42I'll. I'll be there.
- 40:43Let me check real quick, see where I'm sitting.
- 40:46I think I'll be in. Yeah, I'll be in Section 30 near
- 40:52the top. 30, OK, yeah. So if you want to swing by, I'll
- 40:56say hello will do all right. Awesome, Ben.
- 41:00Well, appreciate the time and you have a good evening.
- 41:03All right, you guys too. Thanks for having me.
- 41:04On appreciate it, Ben. Yes, Sir.
- 41:06All right, Ben, thank you. All righty guy there was Ben
- 41:10bird with bold city coordinators, so go check him
- 41:15out again. Small world.
- 41:18It's really hilarious. You start talking to somebody
- 41:20and they know somebody even own literally your whole life.
- 41:23We know we probably could point deaths.
- 41:26It is. That's why Jason's going to take
- 41:28us there next time. We're down and rolling up, but
- 41:32but to be for real now, like that's that's the funnest part
- 41:37about doing this. We always run into people that
- 41:39somehow know somebody we know in some way, shape or form.
- 41:43And that's why I love doing it. Ben was great.
- 41:46A lot of good info there. So as we normally do after we
- 41:50get to know the enemy and Ben did a great job talking about a
- 41:52lot of key players. So maybe little wrinkles we
- 41:55might see from Duke. We've got to talk about the
- 41:57Hokies keys on Saturday night down in Durham and Shelton.
- 42:02I'm going to start with you first.
- 42:05What do you have? What is the key to this game at
- 42:08A5 and five Hokies attempt to get bowl eligible in the Bowl
- 42:11City. I mean, well, the biggest key, I
- 42:14guess is motivation because you know, you're playing, you're a
- 42:18500 football team playing for bowl eligibility.
- 42:20If you lose this one, you never know what can happen next week
- 42:22in CVA. So, you know, just come be, show
- 42:25up motivated, you know, show up like, you know, you you want to
- 42:28play and and this is what you know, you're getting paid to do
- 42:29because, you know, these guys are getting paid now.
- 42:33And as far as the game itself, I mean, I don't know, I think I
- 42:36don't think tech will have trouble stopping the run because
- 42:38I don't think Duke's been very good at all running the
- 42:41football. So I'd say just, you know, if
- 42:43they could stop fast, I think that make Duke pretty
- 42:45one-dimensional offensively. It's going to be a low scoring
- 42:48game. So just, you know, don't get
- 42:49beat with a deep ball. That should should be a pretty
- 42:52good strategy. All right, Tally.
- 42:56What about you, man? Man, I don't just see it.
- 43:00Just. Kind of the piggyback on what
- 43:02Sheldon said, You got to coach and play for your job.
- 43:05You're getting paid. As far as coaches, definitely
- 43:08getting paid. But you know, players NIL,
- 43:12you're getting paid as well. So when I say coach and play for
- 43:15your job, coaches, somebody got to go.
- 43:18Somebody got to follow on the knife.
- 43:20If you like being here, fucking do something right and hope it
- 43:24ain't you because somebody got to go.
- 43:26At the end of the year, players, I'm players are playing four
- 43:30position, you know what I'm saying?
- 43:32Because coaches if they're coaching for the job and you're
- 43:34not getting the job done, they're looking to put somebody
- 43:37else in that spot to go well, we could have been better if we
- 43:40would have had a better blank, you know, whatever the case
- 43:43might be, or if this person wouldn't have got hurt and we
- 43:46had somebody to back him up, we could have done this.
- 43:49So players, if we get an opportunity to play when
- 43:51people's hurt, you got to play, you know, or if you're playing
- 43:55for, if you're playing for film, to go somewhere else.
- 43:59Like you got to have that. You got to get in here and you
- 44:02got to act like it means something and you got to play
- 44:05for your job. Yeah.
- 44:07All right, Brian. Tally makes a great point there
- 44:11is that you know regardless of what next season holds, whether
- 44:14you're here, they are anywhere else, You, you, you.
- 44:19These still matter because your tape matters.
- 44:23What you do from a coaching perspective matters.
- 44:26Everything is still, I think, big from that perspective.
- 44:30So don't lose sight of the fact that just because you're only
- 44:34playing for a bowl at this point that you don't have anything to
- 44:37play for from a big picture standpoint.
- 44:41But the thing I will talk about it and actually Robbie put it in
- 44:43here, but I had already had it on my notes.
- 44:45You already had a. While ago, Robbie, So I didn't
- 44:48steal it from you. No, he didn't have an identity
- 44:51on offense, have an identity on offense.
- 44:54And and to piggyback some on on what Ben was talking about is
- 44:59within that identity. You can't be the offense that
- 45:01turns the ball over in your own territory.
- 45:05You got to make sure that you're you're taking care of field
- 45:07position, but you also need to to make sure that you're an
- 45:10offense that is efficient moving the ball down the field.
- 45:14It doesn't get bogged down in these long periods of just
- 45:18looking completely inept, not leaning on the strengths of your
- 45:22offense and forgetting the weapons that you have on your
- 45:25offense. We we love to see Kyron out
- 45:29there doing Kyron things, but you don't have to run Kyron into
- 45:33a wall to to have an offense. We've we've got to have.
- 45:36We got other weapons out there. We need to lean on those other
- 45:39weapons and that's whether Kyron plays or not.
- 45:41I know we've got a bunch of questionable designations.
- 45:43Again, again, we don't really know what that means.
- 45:47You know, when they were probable, they didn't go.
- 45:48When they were questionable, they did and they probably
- 45:51shouldn't. So yeah, we'll, we'll see who
- 45:55lines up on Saturday for the Hokies at quarterback and
- 45:58running back. But whatever they do, we need to
- 46:00lean on the running, the rushing attack because that is the
- 46:03identity of this football team from an offensive standpoint.
- 46:07Yeah, I'm going to throw a couple pieces in here.
- 46:09Some folks putting their thought processes up.
- 46:13Robbie again, office on the defensive side.
- 46:16Yep, Pressure, pressure, pressure.
- 46:18Hey, this is a big one. Oh, you grabbed one?
- 46:20I grabbed another one. Go for it.
- 46:22Yep, look at that. Didn't take long, did it?
- 46:26I see you out there, Chris. We see Chris Kelly been saying
- 46:30it like these guys that damn good, let them play.
- 46:34Josh Young. Yep, Josh, you had two on here
- 46:36because there you go. The only thing what's my key?
- 46:41Well y'all, we're freaking game 10 of this year and.
- 46:44We Curtis, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 46:46Before you go with your with your I want no, I just want to
- 46:50say this so you can wrap it up when we talk about everything we
- 46:54talked about to the Hokie Keys shirt that we got sent, said 37.
- 47:00Seven and. Then there's a question mark.
- 47:03These next two games are important.
- 47:06Very. The bowl game is important if
- 47:08you make it because you still can sell the program if that
- 47:14number is a certain number. You go with your you go with
- 47:17your keys are Curtis. I just want to say that.
- 47:20There you go, there you go. What do I do that?
- 47:23But like I said, we have played 10 games.
- 47:28This is game #11 as Dwight's putting on the screen there and
- 47:32I sit here and it's like I have no more hokey keys to give.
- 47:36Why? Because I've seen 10 games this
- 47:39year in an all 10. This team could have won every
- 47:43single one of them. Every single one of them.
- 47:46People say, well, Clemson was no, they could have won that
- 47:50Clemson game. They could have.
- 47:52People can say, well, it was a shut up.
- 47:54They could have won that game. Look at the passion, how hard
- 47:57that defense was playing that game.
- 47:59Look at every game this year. And that's what irritates me as
- 48:02a fan because if we were five and five and we were an average
- 48:05team, it's last year, right? This is good.
- 48:09Hey, we're back on the right track.
- 48:10This is not an average team. This is an above average team
- 48:14with good players. How many Senior Bowl invites APR
- 48:18didn't get one. You know why APR didn't get one?
- 48:20Because APR is going in the 1st 2 rounds and those guys don't go
- 48:23to the Senior Bowl to get your stock numbers up.
- 48:25Don't need to they. Don't need to.
- 48:28And that's what irritates me. And like when I say, what's the
- 48:30key play to your ability, coach to your ability, because if you
- 48:35do, you wipe the floor with Duke on Saturday night.
- 48:38And I know Ben, I love to having you here.
- 48:40But if the Hokie a game and the Duke a game both show up, the
- 48:43Hokies are winning by 17 points. The issue is we brought a bunch
- 48:47of C and a bunch of D games this fucking year and that's why
- 48:49we're five and five. And the bad part about it is a
- 48:53lot of those games, the season DS didn't show up until the last
- 48:56five minutes. Hey guys, did you know we were
- 48:59getting a Curtis rant? We needed it, holding it.
- 49:05It's been we had a we had a feisty Curtis who owned it and
- 49:08think about it. Yeah, we had a about week to
- 49:12kind of Stew on it and think about it and need you, right.
- 49:16I mean, if you plan a team and they just better than you, you
- 49:23lose. It happens.
- 49:25Oh, we got to do better. We got to coach better.
- 49:28We got to play better. If somebody's hurt, don't
- 49:31fucking play them. Let them go to you.
- 49:33Put somebody else in. If they're on scholarship,
- 49:37they're on scholarship for a reason.
- 49:39Yeah. Don't put a running back in and
- 49:42never fucking run the ball. It makes no sense.
- 49:46That pisses me off. Yeah, real quick.
- 49:48I'm glad you put this up, Brian. On a very serious note, not only
- 49:52Gabe's, Gabe's leg injury by all means.
- 49:55That looks like that's just your normal injury.
- 49:57He's going to be OK. If y'all were not aware Gabe put
- 50:00it up young man. I consider close to his podcast.
- 50:04When he first committed we got to interview him.
- 50:06It was awesome. We communicated with the
- 50:08numerous times his father fell significantly I'll after he got
- 50:12hurt his father as of the other day and somebody might have to
- 50:16keep this up because if anything has changed, his father was in
- 50:21very serious condition down at Roanoke Hospital.
- 50:24So, you know, Stephen, thank you for putting that in there.
- 50:27Do you know, say a prayer, forgave his whole family as they
- 50:31go through this time because that's, I know, you know, no one
- 50:36gave in his passion, You know, that comes from somebody in the
- 50:40family. And it's very likely his dad
- 50:42about how much he loves the sport and everything.
- 50:44So yeah. I mean talk, talk about a, a, a
- 50:49very composed and mature person. Damn.
- 50:54When when we spoke with him, I mean, but definitely well beyond
- 50:58his years in terms of his composure and his passion for
- 51:03the game and, and just his ability to kind of understand
- 51:08kind of where he fits in the puzzle and, and, and the drive
- 51:12and, and like you said, that that's got to come from
- 51:14somewhere. So, you know, prayers up to him
- 51:17and prayers up to his family, you know, for, for healing
- 51:20during this time, man, because that was that was definitely a,
- 51:23a, a big struggle. And I'm, I'm hoping that he's,
- 51:26he's making some progress. His dad is and obviously Gabe
- 51:29with the with the surgery, you know, on his leg there so.
- 51:33Yeah, Chris just put in the chat, put that up.
- 51:36Chris just put in the chat. He said that his dad's doing
- 51:39better and Gabe had a successful surgery today, so that's
- 51:42awesome. That's great to hear man.
- 51:44Appreciate it, Chris, for keeping us updated.
- 51:46Yeah. Definitely, definitely that.
- 51:48And like I said, man, I mean, of course, prayers up for his
- 51:52family, prayers up for the young man while we on here talking
- 51:58about coaching and playing and things like that.
- 52:02This is also what sports is about.
- 52:04Not people being hurt, but coming together after a tragedy,
- 52:09you know, and that is a is a big thing, a huge thing for that
- 52:13young man to go through. And when we talk about him being
- 52:16composed and mature, he was the one who came online and put, you
- 52:21know, hey, this is what's going on with my family.
- 52:23Hey, hokey nation, can y'all, you know, pray for us and, and
- 52:27keep us lifted up. So to have that mindset and to
- 52:31know he has a, you know, know, he has a outlet that he can turn
- 52:36to and a community he can turn to is big.
- 52:39You know what I'm saying? Because some people feel like
- 52:41when stuff like that bad happens, they have nobody.
- 52:43So for all the bad things that we talk about on the field and
- 52:47what it is, I know that hokey nation's got the back.
- 52:50I know that God's got the back. So keep setting them up, man.
- 52:54Keep on praying. Keep on, you know, uplifting
- 52:57these players, especially during times like that.
- 53:00So whoever put that up, thank you because that definitely
- 53:04needed to be said. And I had forgot all about it
- 53:07when we started to get into the podcast, just rolling through
- 53:10things that we're talking about, rolling through things in our
- 53:13life. So whoever put that up, man,
- 53:15thank you so much for that. Steve, appreciate yourself.
- 53:22Let's go here. We got to make predictions
- 53:25whether we feel good or bad about them, but we got to do
- 53:27them. Shelton, I'm going to let you
- 53:29kick it off cuz you are going to the game.
- 53:31You will see it in living color. In living what?
- 53:35Do you think happened Saturday night?
- 53:36Great. For whatever reason, I think
- 53:39tech will win. I'll take Vt 24 to 20.
- 53:43I think they'll get a little bit bounce back.
- 53:45Rest off the bye week. I think Drones will play have
- 53:49kind of mentioned him pretty well and Tech will escape with a
- 53:51close W for the first time since the 2022 Liberty game.
- 53:56Jesus, 3 two years to the day tally.
- 53:59What about you? I was going to go first because
- 54:02I I know Shelton like most of the time I'm like, why you make
- 54:06me go 1st and being Shelton goes after.
- 54:10But I was going to go first because I want people to think I
- 54:12was copying it because like while being was talking, I was
- 54:16actively changing my my prediction on the rundown and
- 54:22I'm going Hokies, I'm going Hokies.
- 54:25I think we get a 10 point win this week.
- 54:29Being disconnected from football for about two weeks was great,
- 54:33but I still didn't like have time to myself.
- 54:36But here and being talk, being thank you again for coming on.
- 54:40I think that we match up well with them.
- 54:44I don't know if Kyron will be healthy enough to play, but I do
- 54:46know we have a capable backup and I think our defensive play
- 54:51inspired enough to get us to some things and get us in some
- 54:54positions. It's going to be positive for
- 54:56us. And what I forgot about was
- 55:00people's legacy game. Let's go.
- 55:04That's a good. Point.
- 55:06That's a good point. I forgot about the People's
- 55:08Legacy game. I like that.
- 55:10I like that. I'm going 2720 good guys here.
- 55:16I think this is the first time that me, Tally and Sheldon have
- 55:20picked the Hokies in a long time.
- 55:22I know Tally was was trying not to break the streak there with
- 55:25the picking against the Hokies when they when they started
- 55:28winning, but that's that's burned now.
- 55:30That's burned now. Burned that to the ground.
- 55:33So I'm going 2720 good guys. I much like Tally.
- 55:37I think we match up well. I think their defense is good,
- 55:40but I think we'll be able to to do some things to to move the
- 55:43ball down the field. And I I think our defense is
- 55:47going to play well in this one. I don't think that they're
- 55:51they're going to burn us on on 3rd down like some other teams
- 55:54have. And I and I don't think that
- 55:56they're going to be able to run the football as effectively as
- 55:59they will need to to be effective in this game.
- 56:04All right, Well, well, well, you know, Leave it to me, huh?
- 56:10You got to. Beaver, you got to leave it to
- 56:12me, huh? Bring it home, Curtis.
- 56:16Let's go. Bring it home.
- 56:17Well, you know what? I'm much like Tally.
- 56:21I was leaning the other way and hearing Ben talk and Ben gave
- 56:24some good information. But I think the Gabe Williams
- 56:29thing, forgetting about that and then being reminded of it, I
- 56:33think it's going to be a rallying cry for this team.
- 56:35And I do think they go down to Durham.
- 56:39I think they take care of business.
- 56:40And I'm agreeing with Shelton on here.
- 56:42I think this is going to be the first time in two in two years.
- 56:45I think it's two years to the day if somebody gives that
- 56:48because it's it's damn close if it's not.
- 56:50The math is mashing. It's going to be within a couple
- 56:53days if. It's not.
- 56:54It's the same week, two years to the day Hokies take this 1/28/20
- 57:00Effectively that is A1 score game.
- 57:03Technically, that's a one score game.
- 57:06Pride, pride gets off on the hook 2820.
- 57:08Hope he's come back. Gabe Williams rally cry and
- 57:12letting some of these young guys eat.
- 57:14So there we go. There are our predictions.
- 57:17Got a few people throwing them here.
- 57:20Got Steven and we'll throw you up here.
- 57:23There we go, Josh, Saying that I'd love to see some other
- 57:28predictions as we get up here, as we move on.
- 57:31And as everybody knows, by the way, y'all know, we got
- 57:34back-to-back 8:00 games. We do.
- 57:36They just made the announcement well yesterday about the UN
- 57:39feel. About that, I don't know how I
- 57:40feel about that. I'm gonna be nervous.
- 57:44I'm gonna be nervous all day. Nervous all day?
- 57:48Yeah, all day. Like I said, I can enjoy it like
- 57:53the nerves getting married me. As you all know, we are brought
- 57:56to you by the Count Stanley Pharmacy, your friendly
- 57:59neighborhood pharmacy, Three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 58:03He leads. It's in every Tuesday night when
- 58:05we're here. So normally we do know the enemy
- 58:09would get over to big screens. We talk about the games.
- 58:12But since we've been a lot of pissed off the last few weeks,
- 58:16we really haven't had a chance to talk about some other
- 58:19dealings in college football, primarily College Football
- 58:22Playoff. And I know that's going to be a
- 58:24sore subject for some people, but still, I still love college
- 58:28football. I still watch college football.
- 58:31Even though when I'm pissed on Saturday nights and I'm
- 58:33listening to tally ran on a on a space occasionally, I'm usually
- 58:37still watching football and I have all my screens up here.
- 58:40It's just what I do. So we wanted to talk about it.
- 58:44And here's the first thing I wanted to bring up to all three
- 58:46of y'all. There were certain media members
- 58:50that swore to God this is going to make games matter less.
- 58:55People aren't going to care as much.
- 58:57Well, first of all, I think they're wrong.
- 59:00But what about y'all? How are y'all feel?
- 59:02Do you feel because of the playoff that it makes games
- 59:05matter less? No, I don't.
- 59:09I definitely don't think it matters less.
- 59:11I think people are tuned in every week like they always have
- 59:14been and I feel like the college playoffs along with the transfer
- 59:19portal brings in some chaos. You know kind of what college
- 59:24football needed because we were getting to the point where you
- 59:27feel like this team, team mate, team B, team C and Team B are
- 59:32going to be at the finish line every year.
- 59:34Occasionally you had you flip flop a couple of them, but that
- 59:38top six teams to 8 teams, you thought that's all we'll see at
- 59:44the end of the year and there's no way for anybody to catch up
- 59:47with them. Well, this year you got people
- 59:49watching teams like BYU or Colorado.
- 59:53You know, you got team, you got, you got SMU, you got people
- 59:57watching other teams as a, as a collective to see if this team
- 1:00:04makes it, will they pair up with them if this team pairs up with
- 1:00:08a? Blank.
- 1:00:10How does that look? So no, I don't think it makes
- 1:00:12it, you know, less meaningful. I think it makes it more
- 1:00:16enjoyable for somebody like us. It fucking sucks sometimes.
- 1:00:21But as a college football fan, I think it may.
- 1:00:24I think it, I think, I think it's done what it's supposed to
- 1:00:27do. Sheldon, you were in agreement
- 1:00:29with Tyler. I can see you shaking your head.
- 1:00:32Why do you feel this way? Well, I, I just think it's, it's
- 1:00:36at a lot more excitement. It makes it so that you know, if
- 1:00:39you lose one or two games, maybe in three, your season isn't
- 1:00:42over. You can still compete for a
- 1:00:43conference title. You can still compete for in
- 1:00:45that large bid. I would say for me, I, I get
- 1:00:48kind of annoyed by the anti playoff discourse because you
- 1:00:50know, I I'm someone who grew up watching FCS football and the
- 1:00:52FCS. Playoffs is like. 2014 So for me
- 1:00:55it was always like, well, how is it that that the FCS can have an
- 1:00:58expanded playoffs, D2 can have playoffs, D3 can have playoffs,
- 1:01:01but the FBS shouldn't have playoffs.
- 1:01:02Like it just doesn't make any sense to me.
- 1:01:03So I, I think I think having the 12th team playoff wasn't
- 1:01:06necessary expansion. You know, it'll probably expand
- 1:01:09more in the future, but I just think having it at 4 was just so
- 1:01:12limited. There was only a handful of
- 1:01:13teams that realistically, realistically could compete for
- 1:01:16a title. And I also think it may
- 1:01:18recruiting a little bit more concentrated at the top because
- 1:01:20you know that there's, you know, if recruits, you know, know that
- 1:01:23the only four teams can play for a title.
- 1:01:25It's more likely you want to play for a big school and and Al
- 1:01:28as well. I mean, guys get paid so you can
- 1:01:29go to different schools, transfer portal, you can leave
- 1:01:31them everyone. I think there's been a lot more,
- 1:01:33a lot more competitive balance. Yeah, you you went from having,
- 1:01:37you know, 6 to 10 teams in play for the major recruits because
- 1:01:41those are the teams that had a realistic shot at competing for
- 1:01:45that four team playoff. Now you got 12 spots.
- 1:01:49You've got really probably 20 to 25 teams that at any point in
- 1:01:54the season had a legitimate shot.
- 1:01:55So you're you're spreading that wealth around.
- 1:01:57I mean, and I agree, but I'm saying minimum 252025.
- 1:02:02So you're, you're spreading that out a little bit.
- 1:02:04And when, when you look at what we have here, I, I, I just, I
- 1:02:10love this because I mean, when we look at just the SEC, right?
- 1:02:13So how many times have we put Vandy on a big Screener?
- 1:02:17Because they're, they're kind of playing upset dog at the SEC
- 1:02:21this whole damn year. And they're giving every team
- 1:02:25that has a number next to their, their, their name a run for
- 1:02:28their damn money week in, week out until they ran up against
- 1:02:31South Carolina. And that was the first team that
- 1:02:33I've seen really put Vanderbilt away in a this whole season, you
- 1:02:38know, one way or the other, right?
- 1:02:41They definitely kind of been a team that's played to their
- 1:02:43competition throughout the season.
- 1:02:45But it it's making those games interesting because you you've
- 1:02:48got these teams that have played well, that can play spoiler.
- 1:02:51You've got so many other. It's like, it's like poker,
- 1:02:55right? You got a lot more outs when
- 1:02:58when you're looking at this. So there's a there's a lot more
- 1:03:01of a domino effect with a loss and there's a lot more of a
- 1:03:04domino effect putting yourself back into contention with a
- 1:03:06really good win. So it's it's making games more
- 1:03:10interesting in November and it's making more games more
- 1:03:12interesting in November and not just those handful that are
- 1:03:16taking place in one or two conferences where the the
- 1:03:20conference championship is still undecided.
- 1:03:23I know what else I think, go ahead, Curtis, go ahead.
- 1:03:26I'm going to say this and I'll get it back to you, Tally.
- 1:03:28We have picked six games this week for big screeners.
- 1:03:31Every single one of the games we have has playoff implications.
- 1:03:35Every single game. And there's more.
- 1:03:39Their games we didn't pick that have implications.
- 1:03:42Go ahead, Tally. I was just going to say 2 and it
- 1:03:45comes down to kind of what you want it to be about is the
- 1:03:49players. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:03:50Like when you look at a player like Gente, right?
- 1:03:57So I've heard more high school students talk about him this
- 1:04:01year. Of course, he's having a great
- 1:04:03year. But when you have a committee
- 1:04:06that looks at a team, it's kind of like what they do with the
- 1:04:10the March Madness. If a player is hot and his team
- 1:04:14is starting to get hot, you kind of want them to be in that
- 1:04:18playoff discussion because that's going to bring views, you
- 1:04:22know what I'm saying? So for the players to be able to
- 1:04:27put their skills on display, it's a possibility to get them
- 1:04:32to the next level, which is the playoffs.
- 1:04:33So I've absolutely loved what it is to have the expansion.
- 1:04:39And I'm kind of like Sheldon said, I mean, when you look at
- 1:04:42D2D3, even go into high school, then you go into pro, like
- 1:04:47there's been a playoff. So this wasn't a foreign thing.
- 1:04:51Everybody who's a football fan grew up with it.
- 1:04:54And then when you got here, you just accept it.
- 1:04:56This is the teams that we want to see.
- 1:04:58This is the teams that you should watch.
- 1:05:00No, we want to watch some of them.
- 1:05:01Other teams too. We want to see can, you know,
- 1:05:04the the underdog beat the beat the, you know, the top dog.
- 1:05:09So exciting, exciting man. All right, I'm I'm going to do a
- 1:05:13couple things here because I'm the one that wrote the question.
- 1:05:16All the media said it wouldn't matter.
- 1:05:18They're fucking wrong. And I love it because now they
- 1:05:20got to go back and somehow turn back around and say, well, and
- 1:05:24no, you were wrong right Now, do you all know how many teams that
- 1:05:28have at least a chance to make the playoff?
- 1:05:32Just just guess how many teams that they're mathematically
- 1:05:36saying are not eliminated yet. 32.
- 1:05:41Not that many. That 32 was probably last
- 1:05:43weekend. Yeah, it's 23.
- 1:05:46There are 20. Three teams that can still make
- 1:05:48the playoff. This is the next to last week of
- 1:05:52the regular season and there's 23 teams that can make the
- 1:05:55playoff. And and I'm going to come from a
- 1:05:57Hokies perspective because as we rolled into November, y'all, we
- 1:06:00were like, listen, we just keep winning.
- 1:06:03You just keep winning games and you just get to Charlotte right
- 1:06:06now. That's why we're probably more
- 1:06:07pissed off because we go lose to Syracuse and it's like that
- 1:06:11irritated you and it's like, well, now more shit's got to
- 1:06:13happen. But but think about this for all
- 1:06:16of us, not the best season, right?
- 1:06:19Five years ago, well, maybe we win the ACC, but we ain't going
- 1:06:23to playoff. We ain't got no chance to win a
- 1:06:25national title. And I know some people will say,
- 1:06:27well, nobody has a chance to win this little title.
- 1:06:30Hush about that. But at the beginning of
- 1:06:33November, we literally sat here and said if we can just win, we
- 1:06:38have a chance. That's all you got to do.
- 1:06:41You just got to give people hope.
- 1:06:43And there's still 23 teams that have hope out there.
- 1:06:46And I'm hoping in the near future we're one of those 23
- 1:06:48teams at this late in the season where it's just like, keep
- 1:06:51winning, get to Charlotte, get in Shelton.
- 1:06:56You have something you want to discuss that kind of piqued your
- 1:07:00interest. So I'm going to let you kind of
- 1:07:02leave this next little section here.
- 1:07:04Yeah, so we obviously, you know, if you're on Twitter chronically
- 1:07:08like me, I saw a lot of discourse about the SEC.
- 1:07:11Some people, it seems like a lot of the media, the media people
- 1:07:13are, are trying to hype up the SEC that are pro SEC.
- 1:07:17And that's led to some inevitable pushback because
- 1:07:19people are saying, well, you know, why should an undefeated
- 1:07:22or 1 less Indiana team be left out of playoffs in favor of, you
- 1:07:25know, 3 or 4 SEC teams? And there's been kind of a back
- 1:07:28and forth. I will say I, I I see a lot of
- 1:07:30people really misinterpreting stats and kind of making some
- 1:07:34bad arguments. As much as we'd like to show in
- 1:07:37the SEC, and believe me it is fun, they have objectively been
- 1:07:41the best conference this year in football by almost any metric,
- 1:07:44like advanced metrics. They have the best win
- 1:07:46percentage overall in non conference.
- 1:07:47They've got the best win percentage against power four
- 1:07:49teams. So I do, I do think two things
- 1:07:54can be true at one time. I think the SEC can be the best
- 1:07:56conference in football, but we don't need to hype it up too
- 1:07:59much and it needs to be a case by case basis.
- 1:08:01I don't think Indiana, if they finish eleven and one and don't
- 1:08:04make the the big 10 championship game, there's no reason they
- 1:08:07should be left out, especially with how good their their
- 1:08:09metrics are. I know they played a bad
- 1:08:11schedule, but they've still got a a few decent wins and at some
- 1:08:13point like the games have to matter on the field.
- 1:08:16So I just wanted to kind of get that, get that off my chest.
- 1:08:18Yeah. I mean, you got to look at
- 1:08:19strength of schedule, but you also have to look at, like you
- 1:08:22said, the games and also the losses.
- 1:08:24Like, you know, if losses still have to matter, and we had this
- 1:08:27discussion last year, we're having it again this year.
- 1:08:32You still need to have take into account the games that are
- 1:08:34played on the field, who won, who lost, what are the common
- 1:08:37opponents. You got to still look at those
- 1:08:39things as well as just the raw strength of schedule and and
- 1:08:44whatever metrics are are feeding into that.
- 1:08:46So I'm I'm, I'm with you, I do. I definitely think the SEC is
- 1:08:52the strongest conference out there, but I don't think it is
- 1:08:57this head and shoulders monster, especially compared to a big 10.
- 1:09:01But even more so, I think, you know, they're, they're still on
- 1:09:04the, you know, not, not a, a big jump from, you know, a Big 12
- 1:09:09that's having a pretty good year.
- 1:09:10And you know, you look at an SMU that's that's, that's played
- 1:09:13some really good football as well.
- 1:09:15So I mean, there's a, there's a lot of opportunities out there
- 1:09:17for these teams that I think compared to getting, you know,
- 1:09:20four, in some cases five teams from the SEC in this thing.
- 1:09:26Cal, you got anything you want to say on this or I go off?
- 1:09:29No, man, I'm good. I'm gonna pass it on to you.
- 1:09:32He's gonna pass it on to me. He don't want to because they,
- 1:09:34because they know where he works at down there, y'all?
- 1:09:36That's why he's got to keep it quiet sometimes.
- 1:09:39I agree the SEC is the best conference, but I keep going and
- 1:09:43this is what I'll always say. Wins and losses have to matter.
- 1:09:47Well, you know, they're a great three loss team.
- 1:09:49It's like they lost three games. They lost 1/4 of their schedule.
- 1:09:54That has to matter. I don't care what's tough.
- 1:09:58There's some tough loss. I don't get shit.
- 1:10:00You lost, I don't care. Losing games happens, it
- 1:10:06continuously happens. It tells some about your team
- 1:10:08regardless of competition or not.
- 1:10:11Like right now the discussions Ole Miss is currently in, Ole
- 1:10:14Miss likely LSU is not. Is it probably an average team?
- 1:10:19I'm sure Sheldon could pull up the data and Kentucky is a below
- 1:10:23average team and they lost at home and on the road to those
- 1:10:28teams. So why are they considered a
- 1:10:31temple? They beat Georgia, so they're
- 1:10:34one win overcomes 2 not so great losses, like it wasn't a great
- 1:10:40loss like right, No losses have to matter.
- 1:10:44And by all means, if you want you want to see like somebody
- 1:10:48like me catch hell, let Indiana get left out at 11 and one
- 1:10:54Robbie's putting on there. He thinks there there's going to
- 1:10:56be a three loss SCC team that gets left that gets put in over
- 1:10:59them. So that's where you let's.
- 1:11:01Let's say this and I'll and I'll, I'll, I'll let you finish
- 1:11:04if you need to finish there, Curtis.
- 1:11:05But go ahead. Let let's let's tell you where
- 1:11:08I'm at. So let's pretend that we we
- 1:11:11reset the last two last three weeks, right?
- 1:11:15We go back to pre Syracuse, we go up to Syracuse.
- 1:11:18We take care of business, we take care of Clemson at home.
- 1:11:20We run the table against Duke and UVA.
- 1:11:22We're sitting at 3 losses. We're going to Charlotte because
- 1:11:25things fell the way they needed to fall for us to go there.
- 1:11:29I as a hokey fan would say if we don't win this fucking game in
- 1:11:34Charlotte, we do not belong in this mother fucker.
- 1:11:37No, I'm with you on that 100% there's.
- 1:11:39There's teams with a similar win, loss and and and strength
- 1:11:43of loss as a Vandy loss, a Miami loss and a Rutgers loss that
- 1:11:49people are putting in this conversation.
- 1:11:52So that that's where my problem was.
- 1:11:55There you go. So yeah, that's where I am
- 1:11:57again. I do think the SEC is the best
- 1:11:59conference. I think 4 is their number.
- 1:12:02I think 5 would be one too many in this case.
- 1:12:05All right, I know some of y'all got to see it, Some of y'all
- 1:12:09didn't. They did release the playoff
- 1:12:12standings and here are the four first game matchups.
- 1:12:17If it were to happen today, I want to know which one intrigues
- 1:12:20you the most. Everybody listen up.
- 1:12:22So the first game we've got BYU traveling to the Horseshoe,
- 1:12:26playing Ohio State, Georgia, and the Penn State Happy Valley in
- 1:12:33the middle of December, where the high is 36° as a average.
- 1:12:39Alabama would head to Notre Dame, also another state where
- 1:12:43the high is 35°, and then oldmouth to Indiana, similar.
- 1:12:48Which of those game intrigues you?
- 1:12:50Whoever wants to start. I mean, I'll, I'll start Georgia
- 1:12:56going to Penn State for a a night game whiteout in December.
- 1:13:02Like 8°. Yeah, that, that that to me
- 1:13:06would be a very intriguing matchup.
- 1:13:10So yeah, count me, Count me in favor of that one.
- 1:13:14Tally What about you? Yeah, it's kind of, you know,
- 1:13:17that game, of course, just because I think just me
- 1:13:21watching, I think Georgia's the best team.
- 1:13:23I think they can beat anybody but Alabama.
- 1:13:25But you put in those conditions, you know, and things do change a
- 1:13:31little bit. But also you talk about like
- 1:13:33Obama, Notre Dame matchup, you know, like just a historical
- 1:13:38piece of it. I think last time they played we
- 1:13:44had a fake girlfriend and all that type of stuff.
- 1:13:48So 12 years ago, yeah. Yeah, things like that, man.
- 1:13:51And all the. And I tell you, shout out.
- 1:13:53Yeah, man, when you got all that kind of stuff, looking at it, it
- 1:13:57it's it's very intriguing. But I mean, the Georgia, the
- 1:14:00Georgia and and Penn State is probably the most intriguing to
- 1:14:06me just because of how I feel about Georgia's team.
- 1:14:11What about you, Shelton? Yeah, I feel like Georgia
- 1:14:16playing PSC would also be like a a fever dream.
- 1:14:18Just doesn't feel just kind of feels weird.
- 1:14:21But I don't know, I mean, looking at it, I would say
- 1:14:25that's probably the the most hypothetically intriguing
- 1:14:28matchup I saw. Well, it's not a question that
- 1:14:34Boise State could get a buy, in which case they play the winner
- 1:14:36of BYU Ohio State, which would be also kind of crazy.
- 1:14:41So I don't know, man, I, I, I'm just, I like that there's a, a
- 1:14:44competitive balance of teams like BYU has, you know, a good
- 1:14:48shot and, and Boise and all these teams, Indiana, like, I
- 1:14:52mean, I'm something like, you know, interesting matchups.
- 1:14:54I like teams that haven't played each other historically, teams
- 1:14:57that don't make sense geographically, teams that maybe
- 1:14:59aren't historically a great program, just kind of throwing
- 1:15:01them all together in this big, big pot and just, you know,
- 1:15:03seeing what all the crazies that happened.
- 1:15:05So I'm going to be, I'm going to be entertained by the way.
- 1:15:07Yeah, that's going to be the best part of it is.
- 1:15:11Robbie thinks Indiana or paper Tigers man.
- 1:15:14Put up what? What?
- 1:15:15What, Jim said. James Gilmore put up there.
- 1:15:17You put it up there a few minutes ago.
- 1:15:20Them boys from Ole Miss going to be stuck to the bleachers.
- 1:15:22They ain't going to know how to move in like 7° weather.
- 1:15:25That's that's one of the big things people aren't taking into
- 1:15:28account is when if a if a southern team Callie mentioned
- 1:15:33in in the state of Alabama, it's in the 50s in in the middle of
- 1:15:37December. It's nice not game of Notre
- 1:15:40Dame. It's like 8°.
- 1:15:42There's kids that ain't never seen below 40° in that place.
- 1:15:47But for me, Brian, let it off. It would be Georgia at Penn
- 1:15:50State, because I think that would be an A the scene would be
- 1:15:53unbelievable and to be for real. I think like you said, tally
- 1:15:59Georgia is one of it's probably the best team.
- 1:16:04I think they're the only to me, they're the absolutely the only
- 1:16:06deserving two loss SCT men. You can like they they're
- 1:16:09deserve to be in. They deserve to be in over
- 1:16:11anybody else. But I think with that said,
- 1:16:16everybody still shitting on Penn State, Penn State does a couple
- 1:16:19different things in the red zone.
- 1:16:21They beat Ohio State. It's not like that.
- 1:16:24That gap was so far. Like it wasn't like it was a 28,
- 1:16:29seven game. It was literally a touchdown
- 1:16:31game that game. So I think that's the most
- 1:16:33intriguing. Obviously this is going to
- 1:16:35change. Obviously when it does, we will
- 1:16:37be talking about it a little bit more.
- 1:16:41I think it's been decided. I think is everybody pretty much
- 1:16:44of the first eight, first four teams, Georgia right now is the
- 1:16:49one that can make the run. I.
- 1:16:52Don't think so. It's, it's either Georgia or
- 1:16:54Ohio State. I, I don't really trust any of
- 1:16:58the other ones with any with any great confidence.
- 1:17:04You know, the, the only thing I'd say is that, you know, when
- 1:17:07you look at Georgia, you know, right now they're going to
- 1:17:09probably be on the road unless things change in the next, you
- 1:17:13know, three weeks. But that's really the only thing
- 1:17:18that's probably handicapped in them week 1 is, is having to be
- 1:17:20on the road versus the other. The other teams that are
- 1:17:23probably in that discussion are playing at home.
- 1:17:28I'll actually go. I'll go out-of-the-box.
- 1:17:30I'm actually kind of a Georgia skeptic just because their
- 1:17:32offense has been kind of so schizophrenic.
- 1:17:35I am actually a big believer in Ole Miss.
- 1:17:37I know that people cannot sleep on them because they, they lost
- 1:17:39two games, but metrically they have been pretty much a top five
- 1:17:43team in the country this year. You know, it's just those two
- 1:17:45losses to Kentucky by three and then LSU by three.
- 1:17:50Other than that, they have pretty much wiped the wiped the
- 1:17:52floor with everyone. So I, I think people are really
- 1:17:53sleeping on them. I think they're a really good
- 1:17:54team. They forgot to play offense for
- 1:17:56two weeks and. They didn't earn them and it
- 1:17:59cost them and it cost them big time, big time.
- 1:18:01By the way, everybody is like you said, Ohio State, Brian,
- 1:18:05that would be the scariest game. And I think the 512 is going to
- 1:18:08be the scariest game because if you're the 12 C, what do you
- 1:18:12have to lose? Like Kalani Sataki, if y'all
- 1:18:15ever watched him Coach B, he already does some funky things
- 1:18:18in games. Yeah, I mean.
- 1:18:21You so tell you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:18:22He will throw curveballs. If you're a 12 and like you got
- 1:18:26to go high state, you ain't got a shot.
- 1:18:28Like we going to pull out every trick in the book.
- 1:18:30We're going to do funky stuff all night.
- 1:18:32Why not? Why not?
- 1:18:34And I think the year at 12 beats A5 and maybe that's the first
- 1:18:39year. It's going to be one of those
- 1:18:40things where we told y'all for years, settle it on the field
- 1:18:45with the damn Paper Tiger rankings because Brian Siegler
- 1:18:47loves pre rankings. All righty, let's move on.
- 1:18:52And we are going to get to our big screeners pick.
- 1:18:55Like I said earlier, every single game we have selected has
- 1:19:02massive implications on the playoffs.
- 1:19:04Some are elimination games, some are effectively I'm trying to
- 1:19:09look at 1 here. One of those games could be
- 1:19:14played for a potential buy depending on what happened.
- 1:19:17So let's go to it. Brian Siegel, start us off Where
- 1:19:21are we going? We're going to Notre Dame, baby.
- 1:19:26We're going to South Bend. No, you're not.
- 1:19:29This game's in the Bronx. This game is in the Bronx,
- 1:19:33You're right. This game is in the Bronx.
- 1:19:36I forgot about this. So I like my pick even better
- 1:19:40than because Notre Dame's getting 14 points here and that
- 1:19:50seems like just a little too much.
- 1:19:51I like what Arby's been doing this year, so I'm taking Army
- 1:19:53here. I think Notre Dame will win this
- 1:19:56game, but it's not going to be by two touchdowns.
- 1:19:59Yeah, I'm with you. Being in the Bronx, night game
- 1:20:02start, 7:00. Yankee Stadium. 14 is just too
- 1:20:06big a number to lay the way Army's been playing.
- 1:20:11If this had been like 10, I'd take Notre Dame because I think
- 1:20:13that's what they wanted by like 3121.
- 1:20:16But give me Army as well. I think, I think Navy's due for
- 1:20:20a big time cover. Excuse me, Notre Dame, sorry.
- 1:20:23I think, I think they'll cover pretty easily.
- 1:20:25They typically do pretty well at the service academies and I
- 1:20:28don't think this will be an exception today.
- 1:20:31Same. Notre Dame, give them to me.
- 1:20:34He said give them to him. Miranda is going with us and
- 1:20:39Jason is going with us. So there we go.
- 1:20:44Big playoff implications, why Notre Dame wins out.
- 1:20:48Notre Dame's in Army this. If they get this victory, it
- 1:20:54could propel them potentially to be in right there and all they
- 1:20:57need is a Boise State slip up, a Boise State slip up and they're
- 1:21:01in. So there that is, I got the next
- 1:21:04one. I got the big game of the week.
- 1:21:06I got #2 versus #5 Indiana goes and visits the Horseshoe, the
- 1:21:11biggest game in Indiana football history.
- 1:21:14There is not even a single doubt in my mind about this and they
- 1:21:21are getting 13 1/2 points versus Ohio State.
- 1:21:26I know Indiana does not have as much talent as Ohio State, I
- 1:21:31know that. But when it's 13 1/2 points in
- 1:21:35every good team that has come across Ohio State this year,
- 1:21:40they ain't exactly beat shit out of them.
- 1:21:42So I think 13 1/2 is too big. I think Ohio State wins.
- 1:21:46I think it's a hell of a lot closer than 13 1/2.
- 1:21:49I am taking Indiana to cover. Yep, I'm riding with you there.
- 1:21:57You know it's it's 13 1/2. If you, if you gave me even 10
- 1:22:021/2, I might would have taken it, but the 13 1/2 that I can
- 1:22:08see this being a 13 pointer when it's all said and done.
- 1:22:13I know we got Robbie in here. Robbie is definitely thinks that
- 1:22:16IU is a big, big paper tiger right now.
- 1:22:21I, I don't, I don't, I don't feel that quite that way.
- 1:22:23I definitely think they're probably a little inflated
- 1:22:26relative to where their talent level is, but I think they're
- 1:22:31going to keep it close enough in this one.
- 1:22:33So I'll, I'll take the Hoosiers. Sheldon.
- 1:22:38Yeah, I'm taking the Buckeyes. I think this is what I call a
- 1:22:40worst case scenario game for Indiana.
- 1:22:42I think they're going to get destroyed and that's going to
- 1:22:45start the discourse about if they should be in the playoff or
- 1:22:47not. So I could be hilariously wrong,
- 1:22:49but I think that's how it's going to play out.
- 1:22:52Tally yeah, I'm going to go Indiana on this one.
- 1:22:56I think that Ohio State wins, but I think that Indiana will
- 1:23:00cover. It's just too big a number.
- 1:23:03Miranda's riding with with Sheldon, and so is Jason.
- 1:23:07Split house on this one, it's just to me, it's just too big.
- 1:23:11And I've seen Indiana score. I've seen him in some low fights
- 1:23:13as well. Yeah.
- 1:23:17All righty, Shelton. Let's go.
- 1:23:25This is this is going to be a cool game.
- 1:23:27So I think Arizona State is a program that people aren't
- 1:23:29really talking a lot about this year.
- 1:23:30They've had a great season, 8 and two kind of out of nowhere.
- 1:23:34But so too is BYU. So match of two really
- 1:23:37interesting Big 12 teams. I will take the Cougars to cover
- 1:23:40-3.5. Ron.
- 1:23:46Yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm with BYU here as well.
- 1:23:48I think they're going to go and handle business.
- 1:23:49It's really going to put them a very good place playoff wise.
- 1:23:53So I think they're going to go out there and take care of
- 1:23:55business. And that's despite ASU really
- 1:23:58having been putting together a a very unlikely season even
- 1:24:01relative to to BYU. I think BYU we thought was going
- 1:24:04to at least be a factor. I think ASU just kind of came
- 1:24:09out of nowhere. ASU comes out of nowhere,
- 1:24:13unranked in the playoff, 8 and two, BYU coming off a big loss
- 1:24:18to a surging Kansas team. But ASU coming off, I mean, we
- 1:24:23all got a bunch of us got the ASU game wrong last week with
- 1:24:26Kansas State. Brian, I'll let you find that
- 1:24:29for me. I'm with me and me and me and
- 1:24:32Josh are together on this one. Put that up here, that up here.
- 1:24:37Which one? The storm and Mormons to cover
- 1:24:41because they're going to win the game outright.
- 1:24:44Yeah, I believe BYU too. You know, big loss last week.
- 1:24:50I mean, most of their players are probably 32 years old.
- 1:24:54And just like us, when you go to work, something bad happens one
- 1:24:58day at work. You just, you just go back the
- 1:25:01next day and do your job. You know, they they grown man.
- 1:25:05They got to go home and put the kids to bed.
- 1:25:07They ain't going, you know, they ain't going to get all upset
- 1:25:10about it. They're just going to come on
- 1:25:11back to next week and make something happen.
- 1:25:13So BYU. Yeah, Miranda's riding with BYU
- 1:25:18and Jason is the only one we. Got to be difficult.
- 1:25:23Yeah, he's the only. One hanging there with with
- 1:25:26Arizona State. By the way, if y'all didn't know
- 1:25:33Robbie was here picking last week, probably win O 1/6.
- 1:25:37Shell, That might not bode well for that Ohio State pick.
- 1:25:40Exactly. All right, let's move on.
- 1:25:45Jonathan Talley, what is your game, my friend?
- 1:25:48My game is SMU versus UVA. The reason I picked this game is
- 1:25:56because again, SMU is in the hunt right now.
- 1:26:00And I mean Virginia's in the hunt as well.
- 1:26:05They're trying to figure out if they're going to come to Lane
- 1:26:09Stadium and win and get into a bowl game.
- 1:26:12So it's going to be pretty interesting to watch watch this
- 1:26:15game. But I'm taking SMU because I
- 1:26:17think SMU is going to beat the dog shit out of them.
- 1:26:20I don't even, I don't even think Virginia cares for real.
- 1:26:23I think that they're just focused on if we get to Lane and
- 1:26:26we beat them because they're down, then we'll go to a bowl
- 1:26:29and whatever we'll sport that season.
- 1:26:32Yeah, I mean, we're, we're, we're hearing things like, you
- 1:26:35know, Calandria has been running the locker room and all this
- 1:26:37stuff. And I'm, I'm not, I'm not really
- 1:26:41sold on what, what UVA is, is doing down the stretch here.
- 1:26:45I think you're right, Tally. I think they are pretty much
- 1:26:48playing for the the Hokey Bowl at this point.
- 1:26:52So I'm taking SMUI think they're going to roll.
- 1:26:54I don't think it's going to be close.
- 1:26:55I think it could be 3 scores. Oh yeah, I'm, I'm with you.
- 1:27:00This is SMU kind of had a struggle against Boston College.
- 1:27:02I watched a lot of that game. And and.
- 1:27:06Like we played Boston College, they had those moments against
- 1:27:08us, they had good moments against SMU and I think they're
- 1:27:12going to beat the dog shit out of them.
- 1:27:13I think this is going to be a get right game for SMU as they
- 1:27:17kind of get into the end of the season and net it towards the
- 1:27:20ACC Championship game. Yeah I agree, I just don't like
- 1:27:24to advise with UVA right now and I do think they're going to be
- 1:27:26overlooking SMU in favor of tech next week.
- 1:27:29So SMU big. Miranda, Miranda and Jason are
- 1:27:34riding across. Look at the Little Pony.
- 1:27:36Go across the thing there. Look at that.
- 1:27:39We're colonial downs, man. We're Colonial Downs all righty
- 1:27:44so here we go. We got Miss Miranda.
- 1:27:48I almost picked this game because what Florida did beaten
- 1:27:53LSU a they got hope again there because they lost LSU and
- 1:27:58they're like we'll bring Bill and Napier back and like he just
- 1:28:00fucking lost another game fire his ass.
- 1:28:03But this is big for Ole Miss. We've already discussed Ole Miss
- 1:28:08of all the two lost teams, they have the most 2 unimpressive
- 1:28:11losses. If they go down to the swamp,
- 1:28:14lose this game, there should be absolutely no discussion.
- 1:28:18I don't give a shit if they beat Georgia.
- 1:28:20That would be 3 losses. Yeah, but anyway, Ole Miss,
- 1:28:26Florida's getting 10 1/2. Brian, what are you thinking?
- 1:28:29I'm going Ole Miss here. I think this is going to be at
- 1:28:31least a 2 touchdown victory for the Rebels there.
- 1:28:35I I really don't like what I've seen out of Florida.
- 1:28:38I know they've had a couple games where they've looked a
- 1:28:39little better than they did kind of the start of the year, but I
- 1:28:43think it's still a very middling team and and a team that really
- 1:28:48struggles to kind of put four quarters together.
- 1:28:49So I'm going to take Ole Miss in this one.
- 1:28:52I'm taking Ole Miss too because much like what UVA is doing for
- 1:28:55SMU, Florida is licking their chops at play in Florida State
- 1:28:59next week because they know they're going to get to a bowl
- 1:29:02and they go absolutely beat the dog shit out of Florida State.
- 1:29:04Ole Miss wins by 17. They keep the playoff folks
- 1:29:07alive. I think Florida's going to be in
- 1:29:10for a big time hangover, so I got Ole Miss.
- 1:29:15Give me all Miss Wayne gone. Do what he do, stay in his lane.
- 1:29:21Hey, back-to-back, back-to-back across the board.
- 1:29:26Across the board and see where we're wrong.
- 1:29:29All right, the one more game from the Music Man.
- 1:29:34He is traveling to Lawrence, where the Colorado Buffaloes are
- 1:29:38playing the Kansas Jayhawks. Buffalo Soldier Drilling Rasta,
- 1:30:01who bought the Buffalo Soldier in the heart of America storm
- 1:30:08from Africa and brought to America.
- 1:30:25Yeah. Hey, welcome back to another
- 1:30:38week of guitar licks and gambling picks.
- 1:30:41I'm Jason Long. Now for today I'm going all the
- 1:30:44way back to my week one pick, which was of course the
- 1:30:46Buffaloes of the University of Colorado.
- 1:30:49Now how's their season been going?
- 1:30:50Pretty good. They probably hit it to the Big
- 1:30:5312 championship game, maybe the College Football Playoffs.
- 1:30:56Chador's probably going to be the number one pick in this
- 1:30:59year's NFL draft. Travis Hunter's looking like the
- 1:31:02Heisman winner, and Coach Prime might even be headed to Dallas.
- 1:31:06More on that in a moment. Now this week, Colorado's hit it
- 1:31:10to Kansas to take on The Jayhawks.
- 1:31:13And Kansas did have a big win this past weekend, but so did
- 1:31:16Colorado. And Colorado is currently only
- 1:31:19laying 2 1/2 points against Kansas.
- 1:31:22So I'm going to take Colorado -2 1/2 versus The Jayhawks on
- 1:31:26Saturday. But first, let me talk to Dion
- 1:31:28for a moment. Now, you're probably not going
- 1:31:32to hear this, but we do know you do follow social media stuff, so
- 1:31:35who knows. Rumor is you want to take that
- 1:31:39Dallas Cowboys job. Well, really, you really want to
- 1:31:44go back to Jerry World and deal with that clown show because it
- 1:31:47seems like you got a pretty good gig where you're at.
- 1:31:49Colorado is a chill place to live.
- 1:31:51Queso Benito's back, the best player in the NBA, the Joker,
- 1:31:54and he's hanging out in Denver and, well, we've legal.
- 1:31:57So even when you lose, everybody's going to forget
- 1:31:59about it anyway. So you might want to think about
- 1:32:02it before you make that jump back to Texas.
- 1:32:05But don't take my word for it. There's another Colorado
- 1:32:07institution that has a song that, well, goes a little like
- 1:32:11this. This.
- 1:32:13Whole world is getting to me. There's no trust, no integrity.
- 1:32:23So I loaded. Up the kids, took the wife out
- 1:32:26of the home and I moved on out to Colorado farm hurting rice
- 1:32:37crops are all brownies. Those fries here sitting folks
- 1:32:40by the dog and that's cold beer bigger truck country and listen
- 1:32:53shit, we gotta tear and keep us warm.
- 1:33:00Well, that's what you get on. Hey Dion, you do you, but I
- 1:33:12would stay in Colorado. Most importantly, let's go ahead
- 1:33:15and take care of Kansas, Colorado -2 1/2 this Saturday.
- 1:33:20I'll see you all next week. Jason put a lot of time and
- 1:33:26effort and thought into that recording a.
- 1:33:29Little 2 for one special too. One special Oh my God, I'm about
- 1:33:34crying over here, especially using a South Park song.
- 1:33:39All right, so it is Colorado getting 2 1/2 points against
- 1:33:45Kansas at Kansas. Brian Ziegler.
- 1:33:48For every single reason that Jason just laid out, I'm going
- 1:33:51with the Buffaloes. Line of the year is weed is
- 1:33:56legal there, so even if you lose they're going to forget about
- 1:34:00it. Give me Colorado, they're not
- 1:34:01losing this one. They covered it 2 1/2 easy.
- 1:34:05Kansas has actually been one of the unluckiest teams in the
- 1:34:07country this year, which is why there were only 2.5 dogs to BYU
- 1:34:10last weekend. Turns out they won.
- 1:34:13So I I like, I like Kansas a lot better than some people do, but
- 1:34:16I just think Colorado has too much skill talent and they're
- 1:34:17going to they're going to find a way to win the game.
- 1:34:21Give me Colorado. Hey.
- 1:34:26Miranda and I would cross the ball.
- 1:34:28That's. Three in a row, man.
- 1:34:30Three in a row, Oh Lord. Oh, there it is.
- 1:34:37There it is. There it is.
- 1:34:38Look at. The bottle work there a lot of
- 1:34:39sheeps a. Lot of sheeps.
- 1:34:42We're all sheeps. Hey, you got to give Jason some
- 1:34:47props here. This that ASU pick.
- 1:34:50He went out on the ledge. He did go out on the ledge
- 1:34:53there. Not.
- 1:34:54Not a lot of parody this week. Not a lot of parody fellas.
- 1:34:57Anything Additionally y'all want to add the 9 before we wrap this
- 1:35:00show up? I like.
- 1:35:05Gently for the Heisman. Gently for the Heisman, all
- 1:35:09right. I think if it's not Hunter, it's
- 1:35:12gently so. I like gently, man.
- 1:35:14Ain't no lie, dude. But Hunter is just he's he's
- 1:35:18different. So we'll see.
- 1:35:20It'll be fun to see how it shakes out, yeah.
- 1:35:23Sometimes I need the junior to. Win a football game, that's what
- 1:35:26I need. I feel like Hunter is the the
- 1:35:29popular selection, whether it's going to, you know, go that way
- 1:35:32or not. Well, but he but he's doing it
- 1:35:34though. I mean, if he wasn't doing it,
- 1:35:37then you could say why. But he's making picks, he's
- 1:35:40making plays on the offensive side of the ball.
- 1:35:43You know what hasn't he done? Yeah, that's the whole piece.
- 1:35:46And and it's again, you know, the only 9.
- 1:35:49What is it? Woodson 27 years ago and Woodson
- 1:35:52did very minimal on offense that year.
- 1:35:55Yeah. So I I think it's Hunter.
- 1:35:57The the only way it wouldn't be Hunter would be the following if
- 1:36:01the next three games, the next three games, because Boise I
- 1:36:04think is automatically in the Mountain West.
- 1:36:07If if Gente gets to 2500 yards and 30 plus touchdowns then
- 1:36:13because that's Barry Sanders type shit.
- 1:36:16Yeah. You know, somebody said he's on
- 1:36:18Barry's pace, like Barry went for 2600 and like 11 games.
- 1:36:21He is not on Barry's pace. That was, I mean, I was 5, but I
- 1:36:26can remember going back and reading that and it's like, how
- 1:36:29do you have 2600 yards in 11 games?
- 1:36:33Do that math. All righty.
- 1:36:37All right, well, that is going to wrap up this episode of the
