- 0:00Welcome to Reformed Thinking. Today we're opening up a topic
- 0:02that is, let's just say it's absolutely central for any
- 0:06believer looking for assurance. The question is this, how do we
- 0:10actually know where the true lawful assembly of Christ is
- 0:14located? And that's a question our source
- 0:16material for this deep dive is set up to answer directly.
- 0:19It's all about establishing a clear, objective rule for
- 0:22identifying the church. It forces us to look past all
- 0:25the externals, you know, the tradition, the grand claims, and
- 0:28to focus on one abiding mark, a mark that, as the sources argue,
- 0:32can't be faked. And that distinction is really
- 0:34the core of what we're looking at today, isn't it?
- 0:36The difference between that one true mark and just outward
- 0:40appearances. Our mission here is to give you,
- 0:42the listener, the tools to discern a lawful congregation,
- 0:45especially when you're faced with these claims of, say,
- 0:48historical lineage or antiquity that are so often used to demand
- 0:52your obedience. Right.
- 0:54And the sources frame the central tension right at the
- 0:56beginning. What's more valid?
- 0:59Is it this boast of a long standing tradition, you know, an
- 1:02unbroken physical succession of leaders?
- 1:04Or is it adherence to a specific teaching, to a specific voice?
- 1:09We have to start there with the voice, because everything else
- 1:13really flows from that single point.
- 1:15OK, let's do that. Let's unpack this central
- 1:17identifying feature. What is the fundamental, the,
- 1:21the unmistakable sign of Christ's followers according to
- 1:25our material? It's completely unambiguous in
- 1:27the text. The one distinguishing mark is
- 1:30that they hear his voice. That's it.
- 1:32That's a non negotiable trait. It defines the true lever, and
- 1:34by extension it defines the true assembly.
- 1:36That is such a different way to frame the authority of the
- 1:39church. It's not based on a Ledger or a
- 1:41historical document or a building, but on auditory
- 1:44recognition. It speaks to a very immediate, a
- 1:46very personal relationship between the shepherd and the
- 1:49sheep. That's the word personal.
- 1:51The Lord has secured his own people with this specific
- 1:53characteristic, and the sources go right to John's Gospel to
- 1:57establish this. This isn't a suggestion, it's
- 1:59presented as a statement of fact.
- 2:01Christ himself says everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.
- 2:07That's from his trial. It's how he defines citizenship
- 2:10in the Kingdom of Truth. And then it gets even deeper,
- 2:12doesn't it? It's not just recognition, it's
- 2:14also obedience. My sheep hear my voice, and I
- 2:17know them, and they follow me. So hearing and following,
- 2:20they're completely tied together.
- 2:22The very existence of the Church is defined by this act of
- 2:25listening. It's the ultimate relationship
- 2:27marker. The assembly is made-up of those
- 2:30who've been given the spiritual ability to hear the shepherd
- 2:32when he speaks. And this defining relationship
- 2:35has an immediate a negative side to it, a corollary which is just
- 2:40as necessary for identification. Right, the corollary of flight.
- 2:43I think that's a great way to put it.
- 2:45The true sheep don't just recognize their own shepherd,
- 2:48they actively flee from the stranger.
- 2:51They don't just listen to the right voice, they pointedly
- 2:53refuse to listen to a voice they don't know.
- 2:55Yes, that's pulling from John chapter 10, where it says the
- 2:58sheep flee from him, from the stranger, because they do not
- 3:01recognize the stranger's voice. This becomes the test for
- 3:04separation. It's the test for purity.
- 3:07Where that sound doctrine is absent, where the voice is
- 3:09foreign, the true believer has to withdraw.
- 3:12And the sources are firm that wherever this sign is genuinely
- 3:16present, the church must be there.
- 3:19But on the flip side, where this hearing is gone, the spiritual
- 3:23reality of the church just vanishes.
- 3:24It says nothing remains. It can give the true meaning of
- 3:27the church. So an assembly might keep its
- 3:30name, it's building its structure, but it's lost the
- 3:33actual soul of the Church. Correct.
- 3:34And to make sure this doesn't become some subjective feeling,
- 3:38the material immediately anchors this voice to something
- 3:41objective. It's anchored to the Word of
- 3:42God. Hearing Christ's voice is not a
- 3:44mystical inner feeling. It's hearing and responding to
- 3:47the specific words of God that we find in Scripture.
- 3:50That grounds the whole concept, doesn't it?
- 3:52Because if we were just dealing with internal feelings, anyone
- 3:55could claim to be the true church.
- 3:57But Christ himself makes that connection to an external
- 4:00standard. He who is of God hears the words
- 4:03of God. The reason why you do not hear
- 4:04them is that you are not of God. So the ability to hear the words
- 4:08of God as they are written is the mark of being of God.
- 4:12And that link is absolute. The Church is Christ's Kingdom,
- 4:17and our sources insist He reigns only by the scepter of His Word.
- 4:20So it has to follow that the Lord recognizes no assembly as
- 4:23His save or His Word is heard and scrupulously observed.
- 4:27If that defining mark, the hearing and obeying the Word is
- 4:30overturned or suppressed, the texts say the spiritual reality
- 4:33of the Church has ceased. You just can't separate Christ
- 4:36from His Word. Which really makes this an issue
- 4:38of sovereignty. Then.
- 4:39If Christ's authority is exercised through His Word, then
- 4:42any group that minimizes it or changes it or ignores it, they
- 4:45are actively denying Christ's sovereignty over them, no matter
- 4:49what title they use for themselves.
- 4:51That is the necessary conclusion.
- 4:53The whole definition of the Church based on this one abiding
- 4:56mark boils down to a very simple structure.
- 4:59It's the assembly of those who hear and obey the Word.
- 5:02Any other structure that claims to be the church has to be
- 5:04tested against that role. If the voice is silent, or if
- 5:08the voice of a stranger is being platformed instead, then that
- 5:11assembly has forfeited its claim.
- 5:12OK, so if the shepherd's voice is the mark that defines the
- 5:15people, let's shift to the structure that supports them,
- 5:19the idea of the chief cornerstone, and the specific
- 5:22doctrine that holds the entire building up.
- 5:24Right. We're moving from that personal
- 5:26relationship to the corporate structure and the sources.
- 5:28Use Paul's metaphor from Ephesians.
- 5:31The church is built upon the teaching of the apostles and
- 5:33prophets. That's the foundation.
- 5:35It's what gives the whole building its stability and its
- 5:38definition. It is a doctrinal foundation.
- 5:40And Christ isn't just a part of it.
- 5:42He's the chief cornerstone. The sources then get very
- 5:46specific about the doctrine that this whole structure rests on.
- 5:49It's the teaching that bids believers to entrust their
- 5:52salvation to Christ alone. That's the saving doctrine, the
- 5:55article on which the Church stands or falls.
- 5:57And that specific teaching, salvation resting on Christo's
- 6:00merits alone, is presented as the sole element that can
- 6:03sustain in the building. The analysis of what happens if
- 6:06it's removed is well, it's stark.
- 6:09If that specific teaching is removed or diluted or replaced,
- 6:13if salvation is suddenly dependent on human merit or
- 6:15ceremonies or traditions, the entire structure must tumble
- 6:19down. It's the central sum that
- 6:21provides the life support for the whole assembly.
- 6:23This really brings into focus why the true church is
- 6:26designated the pillar and foundation of truth.
- 6:28If that pillar is cracked, if lying and falsehood creep in
- 6:31about how we are justified, the sources are unequivocal.
- 6:34They say no church can exist. It's an absolute correlation.
- 6:38Doctrinal purity on salvation equals existence.
- 6:40Any corruption on this point is an existential threat.
- 6:43And it connects right back to the Shepherd's voice.
- 6:45If the voice you're hearing is teaching something other than
- 6:47salvation through faith in Christ alone, then by definition
- 6:51it's a stranger's voice. And any structure built on that
- 6:55stranger's teaching can't possibly be the church that
- 6:57Christ built. This architectural metaphor also
- 7:00helps us understand church unity.
- 7:02I mean, how could all these scattered assemblies maintain
- 7:05any kind of coherence? The material brings in Cyprian,
- 7:08who said the source of all conquered, the unity of the
- 7:11whole church, comes from Christ's episcopate alone, from
- 7:14his headship. So unity isn't geographic or
- 7:17administrative. It flows from the head.
- 7:19Cyprian use these really vivid, easy to grasp analogies to show
- 7:24why this connection to the head is so vital.
- 7:26Think about the rays of the sun. There are millions of them.
- 7:28They spread all over the earth, but every single one draws its
- 7:30light and its existence from one sun.
- 7:33They form one single light. Or the image of a giant tree.
- 7:36It's got countless branches going every which way, but every
- 7:39single one stems from that one strong central trunk which is
- 7:43grounded in one root system. If you cut the branch off from
- 7:47the trunk, it just Withers and dies.
- 7:49The branch can't boast about having life just because it was
- 7:51once part of the tree. And the last one is the streams
- 7:54of water. They might flow into different
- 7:56rivers, cover huge distances, but they all started from one
- 8:00single spring. That spring, that source, That's
- 8:04Christ's headship. It's his saving doctrine.
- 8:08The point of all those analogies is just inescapable, isn't it?
- 8:11The vitality of the assembly, it's light, it's life, it's
- 8:13water, is completely centralized in the head.
- 8:16And this is where heresies and schisms come from.
- 8:19Cyprian argued that these disruptions happen when men
- 8:22failed to return to that source, to Christ's headship and the
- 8:24heavenly Master's teaching. They start mistaking the stream
- 8:27for the source, or they think the branch is the root.
- 8:30That brings up a really fine theological point that the
- 8:33sources make sure to clarify, something often attributed to
- 8:37Augustine the difference between heresy and schism.
- 8:40If unity is built on the unity of faith, then one problem has
- 8:44to come before the other. Exactly.
- 8:46Heretics are the ones who corrupt the sincerity of the
- 8:48faith. They deny or twist that sound
- 8:51doctrine. The whole structure rests on.
- 8:54Schismatics are the ones who break the bond of fellowship.
- 8:56They rupture brotherly love. But, and this is the key point,
- 9:01the sources argue that brotherly love depends entirely upon the
- 9:04unity of faith. If the faith is corrupt, love
- 9:07can't function properly and you actually have to separate to
- 9:10preserve the truth. So what you're saying is you
- 9:12can't be charged with schism for separating from a body that has
- 9:15already committed heresy? The separation is just the
- 9:18logical outcome of the doctrinal corruption that was already
- 9:20there. The schism was really started by
- 9:22the ones who removed the foundational teaching, causing
- 9:25the whole building to fall. It turns the whole accusation on
- 9:28its head. Those who separate from
- 9:30corruption are the ones preserving the true unity, which
- 9:33is faith in Christ alone. They're refusing to submit to a
- 9:37false unity that's built on corrupted doctrine and just
- 9:40outward appearances that. Really sets the stage for the
- 9:42next part of the argument. The foundation must be sound
- 9:45doctrine. So now we have to turn to the
- 9:47other side, the external arguments that assemblies use to
- 9:50claim they're legitimate, no matter how badly they've
- 9:53polluted that doctrine. This is what the source is
- 9:55called, the vanity of external claims.
- 9:58Yes, we're looking now at the standard claims used by
- 10:01assemblies like the Roman Church, which our sources
- 10:04analyzed pretty closely. They tend to lean on three main
- 10:07pillars to assert their authority, antiquity, unbroken
- 10:10succession of leaders, and outward appearances.
- 10:13You know, fancy temples, elaborate ceremonies.
- 10:16Let's tackle the biggest one first, the one that was
- 10:18historically so powerful, unbroken succession.
- 10:22The claim that there's a line of bishops going from the apostles
- 10:25right down to the present day. That seems like it would be a
- 10:27very compelling argument, like historical proof that they're
- 10:30the original church. And this is where the sources
- 10:32offer a very sharp, very necessary critique.
- 10:35That physical succession is declared to be utterly vain,
- 10:38completely worthless, unless the descendants in that line also
- 10:42conserve, safe and uncorrupted the truth of Christ and abide in
- 10:47it. The lineage of the person means
- 10:49nothing if the teaching has been corrupted.
- 10:51So it's most absurd, as the material states, to put the
- 10:55succession in persons alone and exclude the teaching.
- 10:58It's about conserving the truth. If the truth gets lost, the line
- 11:02is broken, even if the names on the list continue without any
- 11:05gaps. Just think about it with a
- 11:06different analogy. If a king inherits the throne,
- 11:08but the first thing he does is burn the constitution and start
- 11:11oppressing his people, does he still have the legitimate
- 11:14authority of the ground? The sources would argue no,
- 11:16because the authority of the office is tied to upholding the
- 11:19established law, not just to the bloodline.
- 11:21And the sources use a powerful historical example to really
- 11:25drive this point home. The assembly under Caiaphas, the
- 11:28one that condemned Christ. That wicked assembly had a
- 11:30perfect, unbroken physical succession all the way back to
- 11:34Aaron, the very first high priest established by God.
- 11:37Exactly. The fact that the High
- 11:39Priesthood continued through Aaron's lineage meant nothing
- 11:41because they had degenerated from their origin.
- 11:44By the time you get to Caiaphas, they had rejected the very
- 11:47Messiah their entire system was supposed to point to, so they
- 11:50were deprived of all honor. They didn't deserve the name
- 11:52church, even though they were the ones holding the physical
- 11:55keys to the temple and all the administrative authority.
- 11:58The office was externally intact, but spiritually it was
- 12:02vacant. That analogy is just perfect.
- 12:04It shows the office isn't preserved just by one person
- 12:07following another. It has to include an
- 12:09uninterrupted handing down to the doctrine.
- 12:12And This is why we need to look at how the early Church Fathers
- 12:16properly use this argument of succession.
- 12:18This is a really crucial clarification in the material.
- 12:21It explains that when early figures like Irenaeus or
- 12:24Tertullian or Augustine appeal to succession, they only did it
- 12:28when it was uncontroversial that no change in doctrine had
- 12:31happened from the apostles time down to their own day.
- 12:34So they weren't using it as some kind of inherited right to
- 12:37authority, no matter what they taught.
- 12:39They were using it as a guardrail against new errors.
- 12:42If someone popped up in the 3rd century with a brand new idea,
- 12:45the church fathers could point back and say, hold on, show us
- 12:48where this doctrine was taught by the men who came right after
- 12:51the apostles. You can't, so this must be a new
- 12:54error. It was historical proof of
- 12:56doctrinal continuity, not just a list of names.
- 12:59The moment the teaching changes, the succession breaks.
- 13:02Even if the list of names continues.
- 13:05Once the doctrine of salvation is altered, once the voice of
- 13:08the shepherd is replaced by the stranger's voice, that
- 13:11succession loses all legitimate weight.
- 13:13So the big take away here is that succession is ministerial.
- 13:17It's tied to faithful teaching. It's not hereditary, tied to a
- 13:20personal lineage. Absolutely.
- 13:22Now, what about the second external claim, the reliance on
- 13:25outward appearances? This is the boasting about
- 13:28magnificent temples, elaborate ceremonies, the physical
- 13:31splendor of the whole operation. The sources draw a Direct Line
- 13:35from this. To the Jews who are so severely
- 13:37rebuked by the prophet Jeremiah, this kind of boasting is
- 13:41ancient. The Roman assembly boasts of its
- 13:43physical structures and its rituals, and it mirrors the Jews
- 13:46who kept proclaiming this is the Temple of the Lord, the temple
- 13:50of the Lord, which Jeremiah condemned as lying words.
- 13:53The lesson is very direct. God is not bound to physical
- 13:57places or to certain persons or to external rights.
- 13:59He doesn't just automatically stay among people who only have
- 14:02the title or the appearance of a church.
- 14:04The sources argue that the glory of the church, it's true
- 14:06splendor, is spiritual. It resides in its pure doctrine
- 14:10and practice. That makes perfect sense,
- 14:12because if Christ reigns by his word alone, than to imagine his
- 14:16Kingdom existing apart from his scepter, his most holy word, is
- 14:20to rely entirely on those lying words.
- 14:22You're basically imagining a Kingdom where the king doesn't
- 14:24actually rule. And that takes us to the final
- 14:26critique of this externalism, the argument of antiquity and
- 14:30outward profession, which the sources dismantle using the Old
- 14:33Testament figure of Ishmael. Ah yes, this analogy from Paul's
- 14:37letter to the Galatians. It's so effective for taking
- 14:40aboard the argument that just being first or oldest somehow
- 14:44grants you authority. It really shows the
- 14:46insufficiency of a historical pedigree.
- 14:49Ishmael had the clear outward profession.
- 14:52He received circumcision, the mark of the covenant.
- 14:55He had antiquity, he was the first born son of Abraham, and
- 14:59yet because he was not the son of the promise, he was still
- 15:02repudiated. He was ultimately cast out,
- 15:04considered a slave, despite having all the external
- 15:07privileges of birthright and ritual.
- 15:09And the implication of that is just staggering for this debate.
- 15:12Assemblies that rely only on their outward profession, like
- 15:15baptism, are just using the title Christian are categorized
- 15:19as bastards in the source material, even if they boast of
- 15:22being children of God by descent.
- 15:24True authority, then, doesn't rest on being the first born.
- 15:27It rests on being born of the pure and lawful seed of
- 15:29doctrine. Doctrine, the spiritual reality
- 15:32of the Word, always Trump's all the external, historical or
- 15:35ritual claims. At the end of the day, those
- 15:38external claims are vain because they don't have the necessary
- 15:40spiritual life that comes from the Shepherd's voice.
- 15:43OK, so if the false church's claims are vain because they
- 15:46lack this necessary doctrine, we have to move on to the severity
- 15:50of that corruption, doctrinal ruin?
- 15:53What? The source is called the mortal
- 15:54death of the church. When that foundation is removed,
- 15:57what is the actual consequence? The consequence is nothing less
- 16:00than spiritual death, and the sources use some extremely
- 16:04vivid, almost a visceral language to describe it.
- 16:07This isn't just a slight illness or a temporary slump.
- 16:10It's like into a fatal physical injury.
- 16:13The church's life is ended, just as a man's life is ended when
- 16:16his throat is pierced or his heart mortally wounded.
- 16:19That level of intensity means we really have to understand what
- 16:22counts as a mortal wound to the church.
- 16:25The material lays out three fatal causes that signal a
- 16:28complete end of life. The first one, and the most
- 16:31obvious, is when falsehood breaks into the citadel of
- 16:33religion. Since the true church is defined
- 16:35as the pillar of truth, if that main fortress is overrun by
- 16:39error, especially error about salvation, it's whole reason for
- 16:42being just collapses. The second is the destruction of
- 16:45that central structure. The sum of necessary doctrine is
- 16:48overturned, as we've already established.
- 16:51This is centrally about the teaching, that we must entrust
- 16:54our salvation to Christ alone, apart from any human works or
- 16:57merit. If that core teaching is buried
- 17:00and driven out, the forces are clear.
- 17:03The building of the church must fall down.
- 17:05And the third fatal cause has to do with the means of grace, the
- 17:09things intended to nourish the Church.
- 17:11The use of the sacraments is destroyed.
- 17:13And this happens not when there's some slight disagreement
- 17:16over how to administer them, but when errors are introduced that
- 17:19abolish or throw down the lawful institution of the author.
- 17:23So when the means of grace are corrupted so badly that they no
- 17:26longer represent what the author set up, they stop sustaining
- 17:29life. They become, in fact,
- 17:30instruments of death. And the spiritual death is tied
- 17:33directly to the destruction of the ministry itself.
- 17:35And here the sources use one of their most powerful anatomical
- 17:38metaphors. They define the ministry of the
- 17:40Word as the Church's chief sinew.
- 17:42Indeed, it's very soul. OK, we need to pause on that
- 17:46sinew metaphor. A sinew connects muscle to bone.
- 17:50It provides the tension and direction for all movement.
- 17:54So if the sinew is the word, what happens when it's severed?
- 17:58If the ministry of the Word, which is the way the Shepherd's
- 18:00voice is regularly and systematically heard, is
- 18:02destroyed, the whole body loses its cohesion, its movement, its
- 18:07spiritual life. When that pure light is
- 18:10extinguished or choked out by a perverse government compounded
- 18:13of lies, the Church just becomes a corpse, no matter how good it
- 18:17looks on the outside. And when that chief sinew is
- 18:19destroyed, the result is horrific.
- 18:22The public assemblies stop being places of worship and
- 18:25instruction. They become, in the language of
- 18:27the sources, schools of idolatry and ungodliness, and are even
- 18:30labeled a wicked conspiracy against God.
- 18:33And we see this play out in the corruption of the sacraments.
- 18:36The sources point to a specific and crucial corruption of the
- 18:39Lord's Supper. They argue that the foulest
- 18:41sacrilege has been introduced in place of the Lord's Supper.
- 18:44They're referring, obviously, to the Mass, which they argue
- 18:47overturned Christ's lawful institution by bringing in the
- 18:50idea of a perpetually repeated sacrifice and demanding that
- 18:54worship adoration be given to the physical elements
- 18:57themselves. Exactly when their chief bond of
- 19:00communion, which should point to the one finished sacrifice of
- 19:03Christ, is turned into something that actually denies the
- 19:06sufficiency of that sacrifice by making it dependent on a priest
- 19:09or claiming it's a perpetual propitiation for the living and
- 19:12the dead, it is abominated as the greatest sacrilege.
- 19:15When the law institution of the author is destroyed like that,
- 19:19it's a fatal injury. It seals the death of the
- 19:21assembly's lawful form. The implications of this are
- 19:24just so severe. If the assembly has died because
- 19:27it's heart, the necessary doctrine, and its soul, the word
- 19:30ministry, have been mortally wounded, this has to lead to the
- 19:34critical and often very contentious topic of justified
- 19:36separation. How can believers withdraw
- 19:39without being guilty of schism? The material tackles that charge
- 19:42of schism head on. It argues that separation is not
- 19:45only justified, it's required. It's required because the
- 19:48corrupted assemblies could in no way bear the pure profession of
- 19:52truth. To continue in communion would
- 19:54require deadly participation in misdeeds, idolatry and
- 19:58ungodliness. The necessity here is
- 20:00theological purity if a body demands that you participate in
- 20:04what you know to be spiritual poison.
- 20:07Then separating is an act of preserving life, not an act of
- 20:10causing division. And this necessity is defended
- 20:12by drawing a comparison to the Old Testament prophets.
- 20:15They routinely had to depart from assemblies that had become
- 20:18nothing but a wicked conspiracy against God.
- 20:21Just think of the Kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam.
- 20:24Jeroboam Sin was setting up counterfeit worship, the golden
- 20:27calves, and that contaminated the entire Kingdom and replaced
- 20:30true worship. The Godly's were forced to flee
- 20:32Samaria and depart from those assemblies that no longer
- 20:35followed God's word. They weren't the schismatics,
- 20:37Jeroboam was. The contamination requires a
- 20:40physical and spiritual withdrawal.
- 20:42Believers must not follow headlong if the communion
- 20:45degenerates into profane and corrupted rights.
- 20:48The communion of the church was set up by God to hold believers
- 20:51in the fear of God and obedience to truth, not to trap them in
- 20:54idolatry and false teaching. On top of that, the material
- 20:58also argues that the corrupted church often expelled those who
- 21:01wanted a pure profession of truth anyway, So the charge of
- 21:04schism is hollow when the proponents of true doctrine were
- 21:07already cast out. Just like Christ told his
- 21:10apostles they'd be cast out of the synagogue's they're
- 21:13withdrawing from a body that already severed them.
- 21:15But this severity, this declaration of mortal death and
- 21:18the necessary separation, it has to be balanced by God's ongoing
- 21:22faithfulness. The sources are very careful to
- 21:25acknowledge a subtle but vital point.
- 21:27Even in the midst of this destruction, vestiges of the
- 21:30Church remain in the assemblies under the Roman Pontiff, even
- 21:33while they classify him as the leader of a wicked and
- 21:36abominable Kingdom. Now that requires some serious
- 21:39theological nuance. How can vestiges of the true
- 21:42church remain in a body that's been declared mortally wounded
- 21:46and is led by the Antichrist? This is a crucial distinction.
- 21:49The Church didn't die to the very foundations.
- 21:53These remnants exist not because of the assembly's integrity, but
- 21:56because of God's own Providence and his constant goodness.
- 21:59The covenant itself rests on God's strength and his promises,
- 22:03not on human faithfulness or the sanctity of a corrupted group.
- 22:07And the primary, undeniable mark of that survival is the mark of
- 22:10baptism. Why is baptism held up as a
- 22:12vestige? Because the Lord maintained
- 22:14baptism there as a witness to God's covenant, the ceremony
- 22:18itself was consecrated by God's own mouth and its validity.
- 22:21The promise attached to it retains its force despite the
- 22:24impiety of the men administering it or the corruption around it.
- 22:27The sources compare this to circumcision among the Jews,
- 22:30which kept its force even when it was being profaned by unclean
- 22:33hands during times of deep apostasy.
- 22:35So even if the assembly has destroyed the ministry of the
- 22:38Word and corrupted the Supper, the physical sign of entrance
- 22:41into the covenant baptism still testifies to God's historical
- 22:45goodness and His promise, not to the current health of that
- 22:49institution. Absolutely.
- 22:50Other vestiges are compared to the foundations and ruins of a
- 22:54pulled down building. God's Providence did not allow
- 22:57his church to be destroyed. To the very foundations by
- 22:59Antichrist. The name of Christ is still
- 23:02invoked. The gospel is still quoted, even
- 23:04if it's then immediately twisted.
- 23:06This confirms the God's Providence wonderfully preserves
- 23:09a remnant of His people, however woefully dispersed and scattered
- 23:13they might be inside those assemblies, even if those
- 23:16assemblies are otherwise condemned.
- 23:18But, and this is the key clarification, these remnants,
- 23:21whether it's baptism or the scattered Saints or the ruins of
- 23:23truth, they do not grant the corrupted body the lawful form
- 23:27of the Church. The Roman congregations retain
- 23:30certain elements of God's grace, but they lack the lawful
- 23:33constitution needed to claim the title of the true church.
- 23:36They're like a foundation without a roof or or a corpse
- 23:39that still has some lingering warmth.
- 23:41The vestiges exist because their effectiveness can't be destroyed
- 23:44by the devil's schemes or human depravity.
- 23:47They testify to God's unbreakable covenant, but the
- 23:50body itself has lost his vital signs, the ministry of the Word
- 23:55and the doctrine of salvation in Christ alone, and so it lacks
- 23:58the structure and soul of the true assembly.
- 24:01Right. The existence of a preserved
- 24:03remnant ensures that God's covenant never fails, but it
- 24:06does not mean you have to stay in union with a body that is
- 24:09actively destroying the truth. The separation is therefore
- 24:12necessary to join a body that possesses the Word and
- 24:15sacraments in their rightful, uncorrupted form.
- 24:18That brings us to our conclusion then, having to find the true
- 24:21church by the sound of its voice and the integrity of its
- 24:24foundation, and having rejected all the empty boasts of external
- 24:27glory. To sum up the whole
- 24:29investigation, the perpetual token for distinguishing the
- 24:32true Church is finding where the ministry of the Word and
- 24:34sacraments remain whole and uncorrupted.
- 24:36This requires an agreement and sound doctrine, a unity of faith
- 24:40which has to come before and establish the conditions for any
- 24:43real brotherly love. So the key contrast remains
- 24:46completely clear. The true Church is defined by
- 24:49hearing Christ's voice, the Word which acts as its chief sinew
- 24:54and its soul, guiding its life and its movement.
- 24:57The false Church is defined by boasting in outward forms,
- 25:01succession, temples, ceremonies, all while destroying the
- 25:04singular doctrine of salvation in Christ alone, which results
- 25:08in mortal spiritual death and makes separation necessary.
- 25:11So if the true church's life is compared to a body that depends
- 25:15on its chief sinew, the ministry of the Word for all its movement
- 25:18and sustenance, then you have to always consider where that sinew
- 25:21is most actively supporting life.
- 25:23Where is the Word not only present, but where is it acting
- 25:26as the true soul of the gathering?
- 25:28Where is it providing life and direction and defining all other
- 25:32practice? What specific evidence can you
- 25:34point to in your own assembly that shows the word is not only
- 25:37there, but is acting as the true soul of the gathering?
- 25:40That's a question worth carrying with you as you reflect on what
- 25:43we've talked about today. Thank you for joining us for
- 25:45this deep dive into reformed thinking.
- 25:47Until next time.
