- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11His word, and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James chapter 1 and we're going to be looking at
- 0:20verses 5 through 7. Today.
- 0:22James chapter 1, verses 5 through 7, the letter from
- 0:26James. James was one of the kind of key
- 0:29pastors you could call him like the senior or the lead pastor of
- 0:33the church at Jerusalem. And he's writing to many people
- 0:37that had been a part of his congregation that were now
- 0:40scattered all throughout the Roman Empire.
- 0:43And he's writing to encourage them and to challenge them very
- 0:47practically in their faith. So just went through earlier
- 0:50today and mapped out where we're going to be for the next several
- 0:54weeks. And I think we're at about 18
- 0:59episodes that we're going to be going through the book of James.
- 1:02And so this is going to be very practical for you and for me as
- 1:07I say that I am a pastor. And so because I know we've got
- 1:13people from our church that will be listening to this at various
- 1:16points over the next several months, frankly, maybe over the
- 1:20next several years. I want to say at the outset the
- 1:23same thing that they have like at the ends of movies, any, any
- 1:29likeness to any person, living or dead is merely coincidental.
- 1:33And so if you're watching this and, you know, maybe you and I
- 1:38have had a conversation. You've been like, man, I'm I'm
- 1:39really struggling in this area or you know, whatever else have
- 1:43you. And then in an episode you're
- 1:45like, oh man, well, it it really seems like, you know, pastors
- 1:49Aaron, my whatever, I promise you I am not doing that.
- 1:52But this book gets crazy practical and I know it will be
- 1:56an encouragement to you. It's continues to be an
- 1:59encouragement to me. Let's read through verses 5
- 2:02through 7 today and see what the Lord has for us.
- 2:05James one and verse 5. Now if any of you lacks wisdom,
- 2:09he should ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly,
- 2:14and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without
- 2:19doubting. For the doubter is like the
- 2:22surging sea, driven and and tossed by the wind.
- 2:26That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord,
- 2:30being double minded and unstable in all his ways.
- 2:35All right, here's the call that we have today.
- 2:38Are you stupid? No, just kidding.
- 2:40That's that's not the call, but but a little bit.
- 2:43James here is saying all of us need wisdom in our life.
- 2:49This is the capacity to understand and function
- 2:53accordingly. This would be as we would learn
- 2:56in the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament.
- 3:00Wisdom is to know God and the way that God thinks about his
- 3:05world and to act in accordance with God's way and God's will
- 3:12and for all of us because we are not Jesus, we are not born in
- 3:18perfection, that everything that we think, say, and do aligns
- 3:22with the will of God. All of us need wisdom for our
- 3:26life. We need to know what God thinks
- 3:28and we need to know what God wants us to do.
- 3:32Now, there will be times where we're interacting with our kids
- 3:36and we don't know the right thing that we should say or do.
- 3:40We're in an argument with a spouse and we don't know what
- 3:44God would have us to do. We're having to make a decision,
- 3:47maybe about college, decision about a job, a decision about a
- 3:51house, and we go, OK, God, you know, there's no verse here that
- 3:55says thou shalt buy 3716 S Hummel St. in Essex.
- 4:03I don't think that's a real address.
- 4:07We'd say, OK, there's no verse that says this.
- 4:08So God, I need to know your mind.
- 4:10I need you to guide and direct me.
- 4:13If any of us lack knowing what God wants us to do, verse 5, we
- 4:19should ask God. We pray to him and it says,
- 4:24what's God's response to this? He gives to all, generously and
- 4:31ungrudgingly. I love this.
- 4:34This is a great God to serve. That when we ask God for wisdom,
- 4:41He has a promise that this is not.
- 4:43He gives to some people in these ways.
- 4:46He says He gives his wisdom. For those that want to know what
- 4:51the will of God is, God will let them know that.
- 4:55And it says generously over and over and over again, He will
- 5:00make His will clear to you. And then secondly, ungrudgingly,
- 5:05God is not going to hold it against you that you do not
- 5:09innately know if you will, the right and wrong decision in
- 5:15every circumstance. This is kind of a recurring
- 5:18theme all throughout Scripture that finds its source in Genesis
- 5:232 and Genesis 3 with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
- 5:28that God defines good and evil for Adam and Eve.
- 5:32And he says this is the right decision, this is the wrong
- 5:35decision. But if you eat of the tree of
- 5:39the knowledge of good and evil, in essence you're saying I'm
- 5:41going to take this defining all on my own and I am going to
- 5:47determine what is right and what is wrong, not based on what God
- 5:52said, but based on what I think. However, when we look to God to
- 5:57find answers for our life, instead of us defining good and
- 6:01bad, we are asking God to be the one that determines good and bad
- 6:06in our life. And God is happy to do that.
- 6:09That is what we were made for, to listen to the voice of God
- 6:13and to respond in faith and obedience.
- 6:16And so God generously gives his wisdom, He gives His will to us.
- 6:21And certainly I would be very remiss if I didn't say that
- 6:26found within the Word of God is the wisdom that we need for a
- 6:31life. Now I realized that I mentioned
- 6:33a couple situations that there's no like thou shalt answer thy
- 6:36daughter in this way in this scenario, but God gives us all
- 6:41of the building blocks that we need, all of the pieces that go
- 6:46together in the puzzle of God's will for your life and for my
- 6:50life. And even perhaps even more
- 6:55important because, you know, 1000 years ago, believers, the
- 7:00vast majority of believers could not read Scripture and did not
- 7:04own a personal copy of Scripture.
- 7:06But what they still had was the Holy Spirit of God living inside
- 7:10of them, His holy presence. That especially paired with the
- 7:15truth of the Word of God, the Holy Spirit will bring
- 7:19specificity to the life of the believer where Holy Scripture is
- 7:23silent. I'm going to say that one more
- 7:25time. Pastor Josh Tice of Southern
- 7:28Hills Church in Las Vegas, NV, said this.
- 7:31Where the Holy Scriptures are silent, the Holy Spirit will
- 7:36bring specificity to the life of the individual believer.
- 7:40So when we need wisdom, when we need to know what the right
- 7:43decision to make in a specific circumstance is, we ask God, we
- 7:47pray. It doesn't just say if any of
- 7:50you lack wisdom, he should read the Bible.
- 7:52Now, is that a good thing to do? Yes, because in the Bible we
- 7:55find the mind of God. We find out how he thinks about
- 7:58circumstances, how he thinks about situations, the way in
- 8:01which he wants us to treat people or interact with people,
- 8:04or what is the wisest way to act within these types of
- 8:08circumstances. So we we find out how God thinks
- 8:13in Scripture and then as we're asking God for wisdom, we're
- 8:16praying to him. Then we can receive, if we, if
- 8:20you will, if we've put all of the building blocks together, if
- 8:24we've put all of the materials from God's word in our heart
- 8:27that we know what kinds of things God says and does, then
- 8:31the Holy Spirit can put those together in a specific way that
- 8:37he's bringing to mind. OK, you need to act love in this
- 8:41way and you need to have some wisdom that you would not waste
- 8:44resources in this way. And you should rely, you know,
- 8:49you should ask your brother or sister in the Lord about this
- 8:52thing and you should ask your pastor about this thing.
- 8:55And as you put all of these things together with all of the
- 8:59gifts that God has given you in in people and resources and your
- 9:03intellect and your spiritual leaders and your friends and all
- 9:08of those things, when all of that comes together, you can
- 9:12know that God is speaking to you.
- 9:15I think this is what's brought out in the word that God gives
- 9:18wisdom to all generously. That is over and over and over
- 9:24again. God is not stingy with letting
- 9:27you know what is right and wrong in your life.
- 9:31He's not stingy about it. He will tell you again and again
- 9:33and again. We have 66 books in Scripture
- 9:38that that should tell us that God is not stingy with his
- 9:42advice. You can look at this even in the
- 9:44life of Gideon in Judges, where Gideon goes, OK, God, you're
- 9:49saying that I'm going to lead an army against this invading force
- 9:54that is just brutalizing the people of Israel, he says.
- 9:57But I want to make sure that, like, it is really you that's
- 10:01telling me to do this. And so I'm going to put out a
- 10:03sheep and a sheep's, you know, wool, whatever.
- 10:08And if it is, if it's wet in the morning and all of the grass
- 10:13around the the wool is dry, then I'll know you're speaking to me,
- 10:18OK, Then God does it and he's like, OK, well, maybe that was
- 10:21just a coincidence. How about this next time, how
- 10:24about the wool be dry and all of the grass around it will be wet
- 10:28in the morning. And he wakes up and and God did
- 10:31it. And God again and again,
- 10:33generously and ungrudgingly let him know exactly what he needed
- 10:38to do. Many of us would get very
- 10:40frustrated. We'd be like, OK, it's been 3
- 10:42days since I told you to do this.
- 10:44I am God. Like just obey.
- 10:46But God doesn't treat us in that way.
- 10:47He treats us lovingly, generously, ungrudgingly when we
- 10:51are genuinely seeking the face of God.
- 10:55This happens even in Moses's life when God calls him to go
- 10:59declare to Pharaoh, let my people go.
- 11:01And that Moses would lead the children of Israel out of Egypt,
- 11:05that that he five different times objects to being God's
- 11:10spokesperson. And God finally goes, OK, you're
- 11:13going to go, but I will let Aaron, your brother, speak for
- 11:15you. Aaron speaks for like two or
- 11:17three of the plagues before Pharaoh.
- 11:20But then Moses takes it from that point on that Moses even
- 11:25ends up doing exactly what God had called him to do later in
- 11:29the process. And we would say, OK, here,
- 11:31Moses, you know God's asked you and you have said no four times.
- 11:36We would expect God to act angrily at this point.
- 11:39But as Moses is genuinely actually wrestling with OK, is
- 11:45this something that God has equipment to do?
- 11:47Is this something that he wants me to do?
- 11:49God deals with him kindly. And the same is true in your
- 11:53life and in my life. When we lack wisdom, we ask God.
- 11:57He gives to us generously and ungrudgingly, it says, and it
- 12:01will be given to him. You can to know that you are
- 12:05receiving the right answer from God.
- 12:07Now, if you are expecting like an inner voice to tell you an
- 12:14exact answer to something, if you are hoping that it's going
- 12:17to be written in the sky in a cloud, you are probably going to
- 12:23be disappointed. That is not how God primarily
- 12:27works in people. Now there are some people that,
- 12:30you know, maybe they're very sensitive to the Holy Spirit and
- 12:32so as they're praying for wisdom, maybe they, they do get
- 12:37a very distinct sense of what God is, is telling them to do.
- 12:41Very often it it goes through our conscience and I, I've
- 12:45talked about that at length before.
- 12:47The Holy Spirit uses our conscience kind of that right or
- 12:50wrong meter in our heart to to let us know when we have made
- 12:57some right decisions or some wrong decisions.
- 12:59Our conscience can be wrong, but as we continue to form it
- 13:02through the word of God, it will become more and more accurate as
- 13:05we yield it to the Holy Spirit and we listen to it and we obey
- 13:08it when the Holy Spirit lets us know like, hey, something's off,
- 13:11bud. So all of that, oh, don't
- 13:16discount your brothers and sisters in the Lord.
- 13:19Don't discount other people with the Holy Spirit that they them
- 13:24and their advice, especially spiritual people, whether that's
- 13:28a spouse of yours, you know, it's your Sunday school teacher,
- 13:32it's the person that led you to the Lord.
- 13:33It's your pastor, whoever do not discount talking to spiritual
- 13:40brothers and sisters in the Lord in your life.
- 13:43They they will often speak the truth and give you wisdom in
- 13:48ways that you would not have just figured out on your own.
- 13:52God has given you them for a reason.
- 13:54And so utilize that gift that God's given.
- 13:57All right, verse 6 says, OK, you need wisdom.
- 14:00Ask God. He's going to give it to you.
- 14:02He's going to give it generously.
- 14:04He's not going to be mad at you for asking for to because you
- 14:07want to do the right thing or just say the right thing says,
- 14:10but let him ask in faith without doubting.
- 14:15When you ask God for wisdom, believe that he is going to let
- 14:19you know. It might come through just
- 14:21reading a verse of Scripture and it jumps off the page and you're
- 14:23like, man, that's exactly what I need to do.
- 14:25Could be through someone's advice that you go, man, that's
- 14:27exactly it. It could be that, you know,
- 14:29still small voice inside you go, yeah, this is the route that I
- 14:33need to take. It could just be circumstances
- 14:35that all of the other doors are closed and there's only one door
- 14:40left to walk through that. That might be how God gives you
- 14:44the wisdom to know what to do says, but let him ask in faith.
- 14:47Believe that God will answer without doubting.
- 14:51Don't doubt that God is going to answer that prayer because God
- 14:55has staked, if you will, his character on this truth that he
- 15:03says he gives to all generously and and grudgingly, and that
- 15:06wisdom will be given to the person.
- 15:09And so God has said, this is who I am.
- 15:11And so you can believe him and you can act in faith on that.
- 15:14Do not doubt that God is good to his word.
- 15:17The end of verse 6 for the doubter is like the surging sea
- 15:20driven and tossed by the wind. It's just tumultuous waves that
- 15:24when you are like, Oh yes, like I'm, I'm going to listen to
- 15:28God's advice. But actually, no, I don't think
- 15:30God will do it. Oh, maybe he will.
- 15:31Those of you that are just listening to the audio, you
- 15:33can't see it, but I'm doing like waves and with my arms and
- 15:38acting like I'm bobbing in the water.
- 15:39The person just has no settled miss.
- 15:42There's no anchor. It's not the solid firm ground
- 15:46of being able to stand on the word and the character of God.
- 15:49Instead, you're just kind of going by whatever your emotions
- 15:52are doing at the moment. So don't doubt when you ask God
- 15:54for wisdom, ask in faith verse #7 that person should not expect
- 15:59to receive anything from the Lord.
- 16:01When you ask in faith and you go, God, I want to hear from you
- 16:05and I know that you're going to answer me.
- 16:07You should expect to receive wisdom from the Lord in what you
- 16:10need to do. It might not be a one day thing.
- 16:13It might not even be like a weak thing.
- 16:14There have been things that I've prayed for for months and then
- 16:17saw God answer. And in those moments I'm like,
- 16:20yeah, God, that was awesome. Thank you so much for doing
- 16:23that. So don't put a timeline on it,
- 16:26but believe I'm asking and I know God is going to answer.
- 16:31You should expect to receive wisdom from the Lord when you
- 16:33ask. But if you do not, if you are
- 16:37not confident that you're going to hear from God and you just
- 16:40think, well, He might answer me, He might not.
- 16:43I might just have to make this decision on my own.
- 16:46You are not relying on God, you're not waiting on him as
- 16:50your Lord, as your master to give you your marching orders.
- 16:55Instead, you're saying I'm going to do what I want on my
- 16:57timeline. And it doesn't matter what the
- 16:59master says or when the master says it, I'm just going to do my
- 17:03thing. And so don't expect then the
- 17:06master to give you his advice when you go, OK, give it to me
- 17:09on my timetable. Otherwise, I'm just going to do
- 17:11what I want. Don't do that.
- 17:14That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
- 17:17Verse #8 being double minded and unstable in all his ways.
- 17:23To be double minded is to be uncertain about the truth of
- 17:28something that they're doubting. They are hesitating.
- 17:31A double minded person goes, this may or may not happen.
- 17:36God may or may not give me wisdom.
- 17:39If that is your approach #1 repent like, confess that sin,
- 17:44go back to God and say God, I'm sorry for not believing that you
- 17:48would answer me. I do believe that you're going
- 17:50to give me what I need to do in this situation, right and wrong.
- 17:55This is being double minded and unstable in all his ways.
- 18:01That is, he is he's restless. This phrase would also be called
- 18:06like a a restless evil of of slander personified of like a
- 18:13restless demon. This is a person that just never
- 18:16has secure footing in their life.
- 18:18They are always emotionally driven.
- 18:23This might be the type of person that they're always bouncing
- 18:26around from like job to job. They're always moving.
- 18:30They they just never have any stability in their life and it's
- 18:34because they're never sure what they're supposed to be doing.
- 18:37So they just go by whims instead of going by as we would read in
- 18:41Colossians 3 and verse 16. Let the peace of Christ rule,
- 18:45officiate in your hearts, and be thankful.
- 18:49So today, ask God when you need to know what is right and what
- 18:55is wrong. Believe that He is going to
- 18:58answer that. He might answer in a variety of
- 19:01ways. He might answer in a variety of
- 19:02timelines. But believe that He will give
- 19:05you what you need when you need it.
- 19:08He probably won't give it to you before you need it, but He will
- 19:12absolutely give it to you in the time when you genuinely need it
- 19:16and believe that He will answer. Choose.
- 19:18I'm not going to act until I've heard from God.
- 19:22I'm not going to be rushed by someone else in some other
- 19:24location. Instead, I'm going to wait for
- 19:27the voice of my Master. And when it comes, I'm going to
- 19:31be faithful to obey. And as we do that, we will be
- 19:34blessed in following and knowing the will of God for our lives.
- 19:38Hope that'd be an encouragement to you today.
- 19:41Thanks for tuning in.
