- 0:17Speaker 1: small step at a time. Welcome to Beautifully Complex, where

- 0:26Speaker 1: with dignity and clarity. I'm Penny Williams, and I know
- 0:30Speaker 1: firsthand how tough and transformative this journey can be. Let's
- 0:35Speaker 1: dive in and discover how to raise regulated, resilient, beautifully
- 0:39Speaker 1: complex kids together.

- 0:52Speaker 1: Welcome back to Beautifully Complex. I'm Penny Williams, and today's
- 0:56Speaker 1: episode I'm going to do things a little bit differently.
- 0:59Speaker 1: This No One is really for your heart because if
- 1:04Speaker 1: you're listening to this podcast, I know that you are
- 1:09Speaker 1: carrying a lot. I know it because I've been there.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Parenting a neurodivergent kid is beautiful, yes, but it can
- 1:18Speaker 1: also feel lonely and confusing and sometimes impossibly heavy. I
- 1:25Speaker 1: want you to know right now that you are not alone,
- 1:30Speaker 1: You're not broken, and neither is your kid. Today I
- 1:36Speaker 1: just want to talk to you briefly through five things
- 1:39Speaker 1: that I believe that every parent of a neurodivergent kid
- 1:43Speaker 1: needs to hear. These are five truths that I hope
- 1:47Speaker 1: are going to feel like a soft place to land,
- 1:50Speaker 1: a reminder that you're seen, you're heard, and you belong here.
- 1:56Speaker 1: We've got you. So let's take a breath together. In
- 2:02Speaker 1: for four, out for six, maybe unclinch your jaw, roll
- 2:13Speaker 1: your shoulders back, let's lean in together. The number one
- 2:20Speaker 1: thing that I want you to know is you are
- 2:24Speaker 1: not failing. So many of us live with this quiet
- 2:30Speaker 1: hum of guilt and blame and shame. That voice that's
- 2:35Speaker 1: telling you, if only I had been more patient, if
- 2:39Speaker 1: only I knew the right strategy, if only I could
- 2:43Speaker 1: just hold it together, maybe my kid would be doing better.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But here's the truth. It's not a failure of yours.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Struggling does not mean that you're failing. Your kid's challenges
- 2:57Speaker 1: are not a reflection of your inadequacy. They're a reflection
- 3:03Speaker 1: of your kid's nervous system they're wiring, and their lived experience.
- 3:10Speaker 1: You're not supposed to have all the answers. People, you're
- 3:14Speaker 1: supposed to show up imperfect and human and just keep going,
- 3:20Speaker 1: keep trying, and you're doing that. You're here listening right now.
- 3:26Speaker 1: You care enough to keep learning and showing up. And that,
- 3:31Speaker 1: my friends, is the opposite of failing. The second thing
- 3:35Speaker 1: that I think you need to hear is that your
- 3:38Speaker 1: child isn't broken. They're not a problem to fix. When
- 3:43Speaker 1: the world tells us our kids are too much or
- 3:47Speaker 1: that they're not enough, it plants a real seed of doubt,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and it's easy to wonder is something wrong with them?
- 3:56Speaker 1: But I want to be very clear here, it is
- 4:00Speaker 1: not broken. They do not need fixing. What they need
- 4:05Speaker 1: is understanding, support and the space and acceptance to be
- 4:10Speaker 1: exactly who they are. Neurodivergence is not a deficit. It's
- 4:16Speaker 1: a difference. Yes, there's going to be struggles. Yes, their
- 4:20Speaker 1: path may not look like the neighbors or the cousins
- 4:24Speaker 1: or the one that you imagined, but that does not
- 4:29Speaker 1: does not make it less worthy. Your child's worth is
- 4:33Speaker 1: not up for debate, and neither is yours. The third
- 4:38Speaker 1: thing that I want every parent of a neurodivergent kid
- 4:42Speaker 1: to know is that you don't have to do this alone.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Isolation is one of the hardest parts of this journey.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Your friends of neurotypical kids don't get it. Your family
- 4:54Speaker 1: sometimes judges your parenting, your kid's behavior. Schools might completely
- 5:01Speaker 1: miss the mark. With a neurodivergent student, it can feel
- 5:05Speaker 1: like you're the only one who's fighting this battle in
- 5:09Speaker 1: the trenches, but you are not meant to carry this
- 5:13Speaker 1: by yourself. Community with other parents who get it changes everything.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Whether it's other parents walking that similar path, professionals who
- 5:23Speaker 1: really see your kid, or spaces like this podcast and
- 5:28Speaker 1: my free, beautifully complex community. We need each other. I
- 5:34Speaker 1: became a community builder for parents because I needed that community.
- 5:40Speaker 1: The truth is, when you share your story, you're giving
- 5:44Speaker 1: someone else permission to share theirs, and suddenly that loneliness
- 5:50Speaker 1: starts to loosen its grip. Number four, You matter too.
- 6:00Speaker 1: This one is hard for so many of us to
- 6:02Speaker 1: accept because when our kid has high needs, it feels
- 6:05Speaker 1: like there is no room left for you. But the
- 6:10Speaker 1: reality is your nervous system matters just as much as
- 6:14Speaker 1: your child's nervous system. Your regulation is their roadmap. Your
- 6:20Speaker 1: well being is not optional, it's essential. It is essential
- 6:25Speaker 1: to your mission of being the best parent that you
- 6:27Speaker 1: can be. Taking care of yourself is not selfish. I'm
- 6:32Speaker 1: going to say that again, and I want you to
- 6:34Speaker 1: really let it resonate. Taking care of yourself is not selfish.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It's survival, it's modeling. It's giving your child the gift
- 6:46Speaker 1: of a parent who can breathe and who can bend
- 6:50Speaker 1: without breaking. So please, folks, please drink the water, take
- 6:56Speaker 1: the walk, ask for help, not because it's convenient, but
- 7:01Speaker 1: because you deserve it. And my fifth thing that I
- 7:06Speaker 1: want every parent of a NERD virgin kid to hear
- 7:09Speaker 1: is that healing takes time, and being a human is
- 7:14Speaker 1: one giant healing experience. You guys, we live in a
- 7:18Speaker 1: world that wants quick fixes and tidy answers, but apparenting
- 7:22Speaker 1: a NERD divergent kid isn't a sprint. It's a marathon.
- 7:27Speaker 1: There will be progress and there will be setbacks. There
- 7:30Speaker 1: will be moments of triumph and moments of deep exhaustion.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And that does not mean that nothing's working. Oh. I
- 7:38Speaker 1: used to fall into that mental trap over and over.
- 7:42Speaker 1: If something isn't working, if we slide backwards, that must
- 7:46Speaker 1: mean that I'm getting it all wrong, I'm missing it.
- 7:49Speaker 1: But what it actually means is that healing is happening
- 7:53Speaker 1: in layers. Every small shift counts. Every connection you nurture
- 8:00Speaker 1: sure is building something that's really lasting. So be gentle
- 8:05Speaker 1: with your timeline. Let that timeline stretch to meet the
- 8:10Speaker 1: needs of your kid. It's not about perfection. It's about persistence.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It's about staying the course. It's about being optimistic and
- 8:21Speaker 1: knowing that you'll get there. It's about moving forward that
- 8:26Speaker 1: one teeny tiny small step at a time. So to you,
- 8:32Speaker 1: those parents who are listening in your car, on a walk,
- 8:36Speaker 1: maybe you're hiding in the bathroom for a moment of peace.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I want you to carry these five truths with you.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You are not failing. Your child is not broken. You
- 8:48Speaker 1: do not have to do this alone. You matter too,
- 8:54Speaker 1: and healing takes time. This journey is hard, but you're
- 8:59Speaker 1: not alone in it. You're part of a community of
- 9:02Speaker 1: parents who are rewriting the story of what it means
- 9:06Speaker 1: to raise complex kids, and together we're learning to see
- 9:11Speaker 1: behavior not as a problem, not as a bad kid,
- 9:16Speaker 1: but as a signal of a need to parent, not
- 9:22Speaker 1: from fear or shame, but from connection and compassion. Thank
- 9:28Speaker 1: you for spending these few short minutes with me today.
- 9:32Speaker 1: If this episode spoke to you, Share it with a
- 9:35Speaker 1: friend who might need to hear these words too. It
- 9:38Speaker 1: is so important to give everyone a sense that they
- 9:43Speaker 1: are seen and heard and understood. Sharing this episode might
- 9:48Speaker 1: be just the thing that pulls someone from a pit
- 9:52Speaker 1: of being stuck and realizing that they are not alone.
- 9:58Speaker 1: And remember, you and your your child are worthy, just
- 10:02Speaker 1: as you are, Just as you are until next time
- 10:08Speaker 1: when I see you again, take good care.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I see you. You're doing hard and meaningful work, and
- 10:17Speaker 2: you don't have to do it alone. If you found
- 10:20Speaker 2: this episode helpful, share it with someone who needs it
