- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Bar Bones in Hartford. It's the UConn
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Shows. If you like coaches shows, we've got
- 0:05Speaker 1: a lot of them for you this week. Wednesday, we've
- 0:06Speaker 1: got two. Football with Mike Crispino and Jason Candle at 6.
- 0:10Speaker 1: And then the men's basketball show that was recorded late
- 0:13Speaker 1: last week over at iHeart from 7 to 8. And
- 0:16Speaker 1: then Thursday, Geno's over at iHeart from 6 to 7.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I like these live shows. The only real live shows
- 0:21Speaker 1: that we do are you and Geno. That's pretty much it.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Yep. And we had a good one together last year.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I enjoyed that. Yes, that was a lot of fun.
- 0:28Speaker 1: And I hope the folks at Cafe are enjoyed that. Gino,
- 0:31Speaker 1: we're against, Gino, you're Cav. See, it says right there, Cav. Yeah.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Some of your young guys, who's impressed you so far?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Well, I think a lot of them have.
- 0:43Speaker 3: You know, up front, I think Jesse Heslops played solid
- 0:47Speaker 3: for us. I think Cole Davis, when he's been in there,
- 0:50Speaker 3: has played really well. At different times, I think Leroy
- 0:54Speaker 3: Madofsky has done some nice things on defense. I thought
- 0:58Speaker 3: MacIsaac played really well on Saturday night against BU. Charlie
- 1:03Speaker 3: Morrison got hurt Saturday night.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I got late in the game, right? Yeah, so
- 1:08Speaker 2: I don't know if we'll have him this weekend. We'll see.
- 1:10Speaker 3: That's 50-50 on whether we'll have him this weekend.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Upper body, and it didn't look that hard a hit either,
- 1:17Speaker 1: but you could tell.
- 1:18Speaker 2: He dropped the stick.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he's going to be fine, but It'll
- 1:22Speaker 3: be touch and go to see what happens this weekend.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I do like Jeremy Leranger. He got kind of a
- 1:29Speaker 1: fortunate bounce, the first goal that made it 4-1 at
- 1:32Speaker 1: the time. But sooner or later, you get the feeling
- 1:35Speaker 1: that Dam's going to burst on him, and he's going
- 1:37Speaker 1: to score some goals.
- 1:38Speaker 3: He's super talented, very skilled, has a lot of patience
- 1:41Speaker 3: with the puck. And, again, he's another player that's learning
- 1:45Speaker 3: our system. However, that being said, he has a lot
- 1:50Speaker 3: of things you can't teach offensively.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Like what?
- 1:52Speaker 1: I mean, you mentioned he skates really well with the puck,
- 1:55Speaker 1: which is a gift. What else have you noticed from
- 1:58Speaker 1: him and some of the skills?
- 2:00Speaker 3: I think he's very patient. You can't teach patience with
- 2:03Speaker 3: the puck. Some guys have it and some guys don't.
- 2:08Speaker 3: He's just very calm and collected when he has the puck.
- 2:12Speaker 3: So it allows him to survey the ice and be
- 2:17Speaker 3: able to make... You know, his vision is excellent and
- 2:20Speaker 3: he makes... He can make some high-end plays. As you
- 2:22Speaker 3: saw in the game, he definitely was dangerous all night long.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's for sure. When you looked to get him here,
- 2:31Speaker 1: he went to the portal, came from Nebraska-Omaha, where he
- 2:34Speaker 1: had a pretty good first year there. How did that
- 2:38Speaker 1: all come together? You see him and then you contact
- 2:40Speaker 1: him and say, hey, come to the stores and take
- 2:42Speaker 1: a look-see-er. How did that all work with him?
- 2:44Speaker 3: That was really unique because I was up in Quebec
- 2:48Speaker 3: City watching Charlie Morrison play. And in between periods, Tyler
- 2:52Speaker 3: Helton called me and he said, Jeremy Leranger from Nebraska
- 2:57Speaker 3: Omaha just went in the portal. And I said, okay.
- 2:59Speaker 3: He goes, I watched him quite a bit when he
- 3:01Speaker 3: was at Sherwood Park. I really like him as a player.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Is there any way you could go? I was driving
- 3:09Speaker 3: home from Quebec City the next morning back to Connecticut,
- 3:13Speaker 3: which is about a five or six hour drive.
- 3:16Speaker 2: How fast were you going?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Because it's not five or six.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's no more.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Than six hours from Quebec City. So he's like, Jeremy
- 3:26Speaker 3: is in Trois-Rivières. Could you meet him for coffee in
- 3:30Speaker 3: the morning?
- 3:30Speaker 2: And I said, sure.
- 3:31Speaker 3: So I got up and drove down and met Jeremy
- 3:35Speaker 3: for coffee. And we sat and we talked for about
- 3:37Speaker 3: an hour, hour and a half. About a lot of
- 3:39Speaker 3: different things. Had a great conversation. And we had him
- 3:43Speaker 3: down to campus the following week and We got him committed.
- 3:46Speaker 3: So actually, the timing was perfect that I was up there.
- 3:49Speaker 3: So I was able to meet with him in person.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I think that's always better than you can have great
- 3:55Speaker 3: phone conversations with someone.
- 3:57Speaker 2: You can have a Zoom call.
- 3:58Speaker 3: But when you're sitting across the table from somebody and
- 4:01Speaker 3: I think the conversation and you're able to develop a
- 4:05Speaker 3: connection a lot easier. And I think a lot more
- 4:09Speaker 3: effective when it's face to face.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Now, was it the old La Colisea or the new
- 4:15Speaker 1: place that you.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It was a new place. It wasn't the old one.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Well, they're right next to each other. They are.
- 4:20Speaker 2: They are. But the new one's pretty nice. Yeah.
- 4:22Speaker 1: No, that's what I hear.
- 4:23Speaker 2: That's what I hear.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I mean, my wife and I went up there two
- 4:26Speaker 1: summers ago. What a great city. You better be a
- 4:29Speaker 1: mountain goat, though, if you're going to the immediate downtown,
- 4:31Speaker 1: the big hotel there. It is.
- 4:34Speaker 2: That hotel is spectacular.
- 4:35Speaker 3: And I think, you know, I got there– when I
- 4:37Speaker 3: went up there, it was late March or early April–
- 4:41Speaker 3: And the snow was just melting. The ice where they
- 4:46Speaker 3: have the ice skating rink was gone. But you could
- 4:50Speaker 3: see how special that could be with snow and in
- 4:53Speaker 3: the wintertime. I think it's a better winter city than
- 4:56Speaker 3: it is a spring city.
- 4:58Speaker 1: It was fun in the summertime. You know, that boardwalk
- 5:02Speaker 1: is where the hotel is.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 1: The original buildings were dug out. They had an excavation
- 5:07Speaker 1: project and so much history is underneath that place.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's really cool from that.
- 5:11Speaker 3: That old part of Quebec City is really cool.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it certainly is fun, and the Copper Place outside
- 5:17Speaker 1: is amazing, outside of town. Some of your returnees, new roles,
- 5:21Speaker 1: we mentioned Caden, Ethan Gardula, who we'll talk to, Whitcomb,
- 5:25Speaker 1: guys like that, getting more ice time, doing more things.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Caden using his speed, not only just up and down
- 5:32Speaker 1: as a goal scorer, but one of the things that
- 5:34Speaker 1: those two talked about is playing the 200-foot game that
- 5:37Speaker 1: you emphasize, and it seems like they've gotten more comfortable
- 5:41Speaker 1: with that.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no question about that. And, you know, they're
- 5:46Speaker 3: different players, Ethan and Caden. Caden relies on speed, and he's,
- 5:52Speaker 3: you know, in basketball terms, I mean, he'd be a wing,
- 5:57Speaker 3: you know, that would drive the hoop.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Okay. He'd be James Worthy.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe a little more James Worthy. And, you know,
- 6:05Speaker 3: Ethan Gardula is Kevin McHale. He's going to play down
- 6:08Speaker 3: on the block. He's very, very good in front of
- 6:12Speaker 3: the net. You know, and that's why we have him
- 6:13Speaker 3: there in the power play. But he tips pucks really
- 6:16Speaker 3: well and he's really heavy on pucks. But both have,
- 6:21Speaker 3: you know, that insatiable appetite to get to the net
- 6:23Speaker 3: and score goals, which is something that, again, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 3: great goal scorers. I was reading something where I kind
- 6:32Speaker 3: of got not upset, but I got a chuckle out
- 6:37Speaker 3: of it. Marco Sturm was saying that James Higgins now,
- 6:40Speaker 3: you know, has gone to the net to score some goals.
- 6:42Speaker 3: He's been playing pretty well for the Bruins. And he said,
- 6:45Speaker 3: we have to tell them that this isn't college anymore.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And I'm thinking to myself, Marco, in what league can
- 6:51Speaker 3: you not go to the net to score goals? It
- 6:53Speaker 3: has nothing to do with college or pro. You still
- 6:57Speaker 3: have to go to the net to score goals. And
- 7:02Speaker 3: that's what we preach as well.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Mike, when you played BU last season, a lot of
- 7:07Speaker 1: youth on that team, and now... A lot of upperclassmen
- 7:11Speaker 1: decided to stay. Harvey's there, Celebrini, guys like that. What
- 7:16Speaker 1: do you see, at least, and it may be unfair
- 7:19Speaker 1: to say, because every year you play BU, it always
- 7:21Speaker 1: seems like you're playing them in October. You're not playing
- 7:24Speaker 1: them later in the season.
- 7:25Speaker 2: We played them late in the season last year.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Well, on March, but the two-game series that you usually
- 7:30Speaker 1: play with BU usually is in October. Did you notice
- 7:32Speaker 1: anything different from their returnees? Anything different with chemistry with them?
- 7:38Speaker 1: As opposed to last season?
- 7:40Speaker 3: No, I don't think so. They're pretty young too. They
- 7:43Speaker 3: have some younger guys back there. They lost Eisenman and
- 7:46Speaker 3: they lost Hudson. But the one difference I saw on
- 7:53Speaker 3: their team this year than from last year is I
- 7:55Speaker 3: felt like they had four lines that really worked. Where
- 7:59Speaker 3: I think last year there might have been some guys
- 8:01Speaker 3: that might have cheated for offense. That wasn't the case
- 8:05Speaker 3: with this BU team and I spoke to Joe Pereira
- 8:08Speaker 3: yesterday for a while, and we were talking about the weekend,
- 8:11Speaker 3: and that was one of the comments I made to him.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I said I was impressed with how hard.
- 8:15Speaker 3: You guys worked because a lot of times they want
- 8:20Speaker 3: the easy game, and that wasn't the case.
- 8:22Speaker 2: No.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I was impressed with Caleb Malhotra. I mean, I covered
- 8:26Speaker 1: his dad when he played for the Wolfpack when they
- 8:28Speaker 1: won the Calder Cup 25 years ago and how he's
- 8:31Speaker 1: coaching the Canucks.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I feel old.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Well, I'm not going to go there, Bob.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you're just a tad younger than I am. All right,
- 8:39Speaker 1: we're here with Mike Cavanaugh. We'll do one more segment,
- 8:41Speaker 1: then you'll hear from Caden Shahan and Ethan Gardula as
- 8:43Speaker 1: we continue live from Carbones, downtown Hartford, here on Learfield.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Stay with us.
