- 0:00Hour number two, Miller and Condon welcome back Iowa Sports
- 0:02Radio Network Trenton Ken with you until just before 2 bottom
- 0:06of the hour, Matt Rudy. It covers golf and did has for
- 0:10decades. He'll join us to recap the PGA
- 0:15Unjuice dot bet sponsors our weekly conversation with our
- 0:19baseball guy. He's Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com
- 0:23and he's with us, Matt Trenton. Ken, good to talk to you.
- 0:26Matt Snyder, you want to want to start with you.
- 0:27It was we had the the crossover series.
- 0:31We had the rivalry weekend type thing this past weekend.
- 0:35I kind of still like it. It was obviously we've done it
- 0:38for a while now and maybe some of the the novelties worn off
- 0:41with some of them, but there's still some juice to these
- 0:44series. Do you see it that way?
- 0:47Yeah, yeah, a little bit. I mean, I still think it's funny
- 0:50that, look, it's very difficult for Major League Baseball to
- 0:56schedule 15 matchups and to try to call all of them rivalries.
- 0:59It's difficult, but I, and I understand that.
- 1:02But I do think it's funny that there aren't actual rivalries.
- 1:06Like the biggest rivalries in baseball are Cubs, Cardinals,
- 1:11Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants.
- 1:14And instead these are all the Interlake matchups.
- 1:17Instead, however, yeah, it's cool.
- 1:20Like Mets, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox, stuff like that.
- 1:28Just lost you. Are you there?
- 1:29Really fun over the weekend, yes?
- 1:32Good stuff. We just broke up for a second.
- 1:33Yeah, we do. We got you.
- 1:34So, OK, over the weekend, we see the White Sox take two out of
- 1:37three. They looked competent.
- 1:40It was more White Sox than I was anticipating.
- 1:43I was going to be watching in the middle of May, but here we
- 1:45are and I think they're going. To.
- 1:46Absolutely. They're starting to kind of
- 1:49wedge their way in here as we're surrounded by 6 different Major
- 1:51League Baseball teams and they're starting to get a little
- 1:54bit of at least TV 2. Still not TV one, but they're
- 1:56getting there. Is this sustainable though?
- 1:59Terrible division? Obviously, nobody.
- 2:01You don't feel Maybe Cleveland could run away, but doesn't feel
- 2:04highly likely. Can this thing hang on?
- 2:07Can they even get to the middle of the season still with the
- 2:10shot, with this White Sox squad? Yeah, I think so.
- 2:14I, I think, look, they're fun enough.
- 2:17And by the way, I love that you mentioned.
- 2:21Oh no, lost them again. But there's six different colors
- 2:25on the blackout map. Look, yeah, I like the power
- 2:30through the middle lineup. Murakami, Colson, Montgomery,
- 2:33Miguel Vargas. That's really, really scary when
- 2:37you're an opposing team. And I would know first hand
- 2:39because I just watched the Cubs and every time you got to the
- 2:45middle of the line up, I thought, we can't pitch to these
- 2:47guys. We what, what can you do here?
- 2:49And when Vargas came up yesterday against calling Ray, I
- 2:53actually texted my dad and brothers that I think we should
- 2:55take Ray out before this batter. Sure enough, Vargas doubled in
- 2:58the gap and drove home two runs and all of a sudden the game was
- 3:00tied. They they are.
- 3:03There's a feistiness to them. And it looks like Davis Martin
- 3:07right now is pitching like an ace.
- 3:08It looks like they've kind of figured out the back end of the
- 3:10bullpen. They've got power, they they can
- 3:14play good defense in spots, they have speed at times.
- 3:18I think they can hang around. It's mostly because it's a weak
- 3:21division. I don't think they're much
- 3:23better than mediocre, but that might be all you need in this
- 3:26division. So yeah, I think they can hang
- 3:28around. We're going to call you right
- 3:30back. You see you're breaking up
- 3:31periodically here, Matt. We'll call you right back, man.
- 3:34That's no problem. We'll call you right back.
- 3:35Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com. We'll re hook up with him.
- 3:39Hopefully we won't lose some of his answer and at portions of
- 3:44our little 15 minute piece or so with him, a lot of ground to
- 3:47cover. We talk baseball with him each
- 3:49and every Monday. Both TC and I love this spot and
- 3:52we got a lot of ground to cover. In fact, I'm going to get next
- 3:55to the worst team in Major League Baseball and maybe one of
- 3:58Major League Baseball superstars.
- 3:59This might be the time for him to ask his way out.
- 4:02Let's get back to Matt Snyder, CBS Sports.
- 4:04Matt, I want to go to the worst team in baseball who had the
- 4:08unfortunate situation of sharing the team, sharing the city with
- 4:12maybe the best team in baseball, the Angels, when it comes to my
- 4:16Trout, right? There has to be a time when
- 4:20Trout just says, you know, I, I, I, I've been a good foot
- 4:23soldier. I've, I've been here my entire
- 4:26career, I can't keep waiting for that opportunity for this team
- 4:30to turn a corner. It's they're so far away from
- 4:33turning that corner. If indeed this is the year, is
- 4:37there a team or two that make more sense?
- 4:39I know the Braves are already, at least that's out there.
- 4:42Does the Phillies maybe make the most sense of anywhere, do you
- 4:45think? If Trump leaves, who do you
- 4:47think will be the pursuer that ultimately gets him?
- 4:52Yeah, it's difficult. You know, you would think that
- 4:56we'll come to it. All right, enough, enough.
- 4:59But you know, it's hard to get inside someone's head.
- 5:01And he's never done anything but because he wants to stay.
- 5:07Yeah, the Phillies immediately come to mind because he's a
- 5:10South Jersey guy. He's a big Eagles fan, for
- 5:13example. He's always been all over the
- 5:15Philly sports. And there's a natural connection
- 5:19because we always think about Bryce Harper.
- 5:22Mike Trout of Maine and bachata all came up around the same
- 5:24time. So you always connect those 3.
- 5:27Bryce Harper on the Phillies. The Phillies are a contender.
- 5:29It feels like it's a good fit, yeah, And surely they're going
- 5:34to go for it, right? An old Ish roster, their
- 5:38perennial playoff team. They haven't won the World
- 5:40Series with this current group, so they would make sense.
- 5:46He's 35 and August, I mean, how much time he got left Trout?
- 5:50Exactly, exactly. You're right, the Braves do make
- 5:53sense as well. I, I kind of, I wonder about the
- 5:56Yankees, if the Yankees would throw their hat in the ring
- 5:59there. Maybe, maybe not.
- 6:01It's difficult because we haven't had any substantial
- 6:04rumors when it comes to him. So it's all speculative.
- 6:09Yeah, I Braves and Phillies kind of feels like that's it, like
- 6:13it's one of those two just just initially eyeballing it.
- 6:18Want to go back to Chicago, back to the South Side and PCA back
- 6:22in the spotlight again In the past he's ripped a California
- 6:25guy, ripped Dodger fans or not his passion as Chicago fans,
- 6:28he's always in the mix and we've had fun with PCA.
- 6:31Ken and I have gone back and forth.
- 6:32I know I've told you before, Mattie just doesn't seem like my
- 6:35kind of guy. Not a Cubs fan, doesn't seem
- 6:37like a guy that I'd probably want to hang out with, but that
- 6:39doesn't matter, he's a baseball player.
- 6:41Still there is a wide range of opinions.
- 6:44I think this depending on if you fly AW flag after a victory or
- 6:47not of where he is. When you saw that the
- 6:50altercation I'm sure you sure you saw the different camera
- 6:53angles also that came out of it. Just your take away.
- 6:55Also with the caveat you are a Cubs fan.
- 6:58Yeah. So, no, I don't think you should
- 7:00do that. But I also think these players
- 7:04are human. And it's easy to forget that
- 7:06they're human beings just like the rest of us.
- 7:08And there are emotions that happen.
- 7:11I I like that he wears his heart on his sleeve.
- 7:14I I've, I've said that for a long, long time.
- 7:16I will. Going back, I said it about
- 7:18Javier Baez. We could keep going all the way
- 7:20back. For some reason, it rubs people
- 7:24who are not fans of the team the wrong way when a guy wears his
- 7:29heart on his sleeve like that. And it is an emotional guy.
- 7:33I, I, I get some a little losses.
- 7:36Like what? What's so bad about him?
- 7:39Like, obviously he shouldn't have done that.
- 7:41But again, he's human. You react in the moment,
- 7:44Whatever. It's not like he hurt anybody.
- 7:46I mean, it's, you know, it's words.
- 7:50But I guess I'll ask you Trent, since that he's not your type of
- 7:53guy. Like what?
- 7:54What's so bad about him? Honestly, he just seems douchey.
- 7:57I mean, it's as simple as that. It really is.
- 7:59He just, he doesn't seem like you know.
- 8:01What? It's a gut feel.
- 8:03I think there's a lot of people I I've been unable to understand
- 8:07it, but I probably don't need to get too deep into it.
- 8:10I think it's a gut feel for a lot of people then.
- 8:12And and, and the bride, once it was an engagement party, the
- 8:15bride to be went to the ballpark knowing with the plan of getting
- 8:19a picking a fight with PCA. I mean, the, the the boyfriend
- 8:23slash fiance came out in the paper today and said we knew we
- 8:27were going to do this. We didn't think it was going to
- 8:29get the coverage that it did. Well, I mean, come on, this
- 8:32thing blew up. I'm a fan, right?
- 8:35Exactly. I'm a huge fan.
- 8:37I like watch. I love watching him play
- 8:39defense, love watching him run the bases in the batter's box.
- 8:42That's another story. But yeah, I can.
- 8:45I can certainly understand the. I'll say this, I'll say this.
- 8:49And I know that there were, you know, and there's an undertone
- 8:52of bias here because I have a cup stand, but I will say this
- 8:55from personal interactions in the clubhouse, legitimately one
- 8:59of the nicest guys I've come across in the clubhouse.
- 9:02He's made extra time for me. There were times that there were
- 9:05there were coaches that said you don't have time to do this and
- 9:08he still tried to make for me. He he's really, really nice in
- 9:11the clubhouse. Stop ruining this for me, cider.
- 9:14You want to hate him? Sorry.
- 9:16It's just to be anything. Hey, I want to know how Kevin
- 9:18Cash keeps doing this with the race.
- 9:20I mean, this is one of the more every single year seemingly.
- 9:25This team shouldn't be there, yet there they are.
- 9:29No, it it really, I mean, if you look at it, OK, so offensively,
- 9:33Junior Caminero, great, probably on his way to being a legit
- 9:36superstar. Yandi Diaz, we know about him.
- 9:38We know he's a good hair. Jonathan Aranda, pretty good
- 9:41hitter. That's about it when you look at
- 9:44the offense. And then you go to the rotation
- 9:47and Nick Martinez was bad for the Reds.
- 9:49Last year's got a 1.51 ERA and nine starts so far.
- 9:53Drasmus and Shane Mcclanahan, very good.
- 9:56But other than that, I mean, you look like the rest of the the
- 10:00pitching staff going on through the bullpen and everything.
- 10:02It just they should not be this good, but it's it's what they
- 10:06do. They they've they've long been a
- 10:10zig when everybody else zags. One thing I find very
- 10:14interesting about the team right now is for a long time go back
- 10:19to the Moneyball A's when on base percentage was was.
- 10:24No. No, we got squirrels in the
- 10:30phone lines today. Something's going on here.
- 10:32It is baseball right now, so it's like it's cyclical and the
- 10:36batting average is coming back. I mean, I, I, I just take a look
- 10:41at the starters on this team and I love the game.
- 10:44I'm not sure I can name 4. Maybe.
- 10:45Maybe I'd set the number number 2, 1/2.
- 10:48It truly is. It's a, it's a line up of guys
- 10:51that I don't know where they came from there.
- 10:54There's a couple of veterans in there.
- 10:55Gavin Lux, obviously he's got rings, he's part of a parade,
- 10:58but it's just a, it's just a line up that just, I don't know
- 11:01how they do it year, especially in that division.
- 11:03Matt. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:06And that division right now, three of the more disappointing
- 11:11teams in baseball, for sure. You've got the Rays are amazing,
- 11:13the Yankees still pretty good even though they were went 2:00
- 11:17and 7:00 on that bad road trip. But the Jays, Orioles, Red Sox,
- 11:22at least Sox, you would say, are very disappointing and a lot of
- 11:25people thought the Orioles had bounced back potential and it's
- 11:27just not there so far. So man, kudos to the Rays.
- 11:32Speaking of disappointing teams in the American League, let's go
- 11:35to the Pacific Northwest where Seattle made some headlines over
- 11:38the weekend. Cole Emerson is up now.
- 11:40They handed out the big contract before we ever played an MLB
- 11:43game, $95 million guaranteed 8 year contract that was handed
- 11:47out on April's Fool's Day on April 1st.
- 11:50But Emerson's up changing the fortune here and and what should
- 11:53be an expectation for a guy that's just 20 years old trying
- 11:56to help out this Mariner offense.
- 11:59You you might look at Conor Griffin of the Pirates, who who
- 12:03started really, really slow and in the last I wanted to it's
- 12:07like 2223 games. He's hitting 325 and starting to
- 12:11look like he's starting to get it.
- 12:12Something like baseline expectation because this is a
- 12:18really, really hard game and the pitchers are so, so, so good
- 12:21nowadays. It's an exponential leap from
- 12:25AAA to the majors. I remembered one time I was
- 12:27talking to a scout and I said something like, well, it seems
- 12:30like the AA to AAA jump is the hardest one and the is the
- 12:34hardest one. And he went, oh, no, no, no, no,
- 12:36it's AAA to the majors. The majors is just a totally,
- 12:39totally different level. So, you know, maybe struggles a
- 12:44little bit, but then there's so much talent there, you would
- 12:47expect things to click maybe a month in or so, something like
- 12:51that. And yeah, as you said, Trent,
- 12:55very, very disappointing for the Mariners right now to be 4 games
- 12:58under. But hey, sometimes geography can
- 13:01help you because they're only two games at first or under.
- 13:04Well, when you look at it like that, can the Phillies catch the
- 13:07Braves? Probably not, but eight games
- 13:13right now is workable. I know it it seems like it's
- 13:16insurmountable and everything, but we've seen from the middle
- 13:20of May to the end of the season, 8 games is definitely workable.
- 13:23I don't think they will. I think the Braves are better.
- 13:26And if you just said true talent level, are the Phillies really
- 13:30eight games better than the Braves for the rest of the
- 13:32season? I don't see that happening.
- 13:34But you know it's there. There's some head to head left
- 13:38in there and they're playing really, really good baseball
- 13:41right now. I think there's it's they're
- 13:45very interesting to me and the extremes on their schedule
- 13:49because when they were really, really bad, they only played the
- 13:53Cubs and Braves for two weeks. And you could just say, well,
- 13:55it's because of the schedule. They just had a really hard
- 13:57schedule. But to lose 10 in a rows awfully
- 14:00extreme. Since then, they've played
- 14:03Giants, Marlins, A's, Rockies, Red Sox, Pirates.
- 14:07It doesn't seem like that strong of a schedule, but man, 15 and
- 14:10four that's that's difficult against any schedule.
- 14:13So. When was it all?
- 14:14Over the place on the extreme. When did they change managers?
- 14:17Can you go? Can you?
- 14:18We pinpoint to that day that they turned a corner when
- 14:21Mattingly took over. Do you remember what day it was?
- 14:25Yeah. Monday, Monday, April 27th, it
- 14:29was. Not OK.
- 14:30Yeah, so they were 9 to 19 and they're 15 and four.
- 14:33So there you go. Part of it is Colorado when
- 14:37they're looking for a Miami. Yeah, when you're looking, when
- 14:40you're looking for a bit of a vibe shift.
- 14:42You think we're coming off a really hard schedule.
- 14:45We've got an easy schedule coming up and I always go back
- 14:49to thinking about the Bull Durham quote and crash, David
- 14:51said. If you think that's why you're
- 14:52winning, then you are. You can kind of see mentally,
- 14:56hey, let's let's change managers.
- 14:58There'll be a vibe shift. And then if you start winning,
- 15:02if you think you're winning because you changed the
- 15:03managers, then you are. So I maybe just maybe mentally
- 15:08there was a little bit of a change there, but I do not think
- 15:11it was just because they changed managers.
- 15:13I think it was a lot of other variables.
- 15:16Zach Wheeler getting back in the rotation instead of Taiwan.
- 15:18Walker was one of those. Brandon Marsh going crazy, Kyle
- 15:22Schwarber and Bryce Harper doing Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper
- 15:25things. A lot of variables there.
- 15:27And playing the Giants and then playing the the Fish, and then
- 15:30playing the A's, and then playing Colorado and Boston and
- 15:33Pittsburgh, Yeah, that has a lot to do with it.
- 15:35You're right. You look at the schedule and
- 15:36advance of making a move. I agree.
- 15:38Matt, we talked a week ago about loose bodies in the elbow with
- 15:40Schooble, and we had this earlier this year with Edwin
- 15:43Diaz, now Blake Snell. Is this injury becoming more
- 15:47prevalent just because of obviously the wear and tear that
- 15:50we're seeing with these guys? Chuck it up there.
- 15:52Is it just a weird thing that everything's grouped together
- 15:54and we have three major names that are having this kind of
- 15:57surgery? Or is this something new where
- 16:00instead of going through something that is more
- 16:02reconstructive, they go in there and something that you can
- 16:05return during the course of the season?
- 16:07Help me out with loose bodies because I certainly don't
- 16:09remember it at this volume. I think it's one of those things
- 16:13where it had probably always been an injury, but for a long
- 16:17time, maybe it went undiagnosed or for a long time they called
- 16:21it something else or but it might be becoming more prevalent
- 16:26because of how hard guys throw nowadays.
- 16:29I mean, I talked to an orthopaedic surgeon and I asked
- 16:32him about it and he said the throwing motion, every single
- 16:36time you throw something overhanded as hard as you can,
- 16:41the bones kind of hit together in your elbow.
- 16:43And if you do that over and over and over, eventually something's
- 16:46going to chip off of it. So I think it's probably, you
- 16:51know, a combination of period factors and part of it is just
- 16:55how hard they throw nowadays. The Brewers continue their climb
- 16:59up the division in the Central. Are they going to overhaul the
- 17:03Cubs? I'll stick with the Cubs for my
- 17:07Central Division winner prediction, but I would be very
- 17:12surprised if at some point the Brewers were not in first place.
- 17:16Maybe as soon as Wednesday. The way things are going right
- 17:19now, the Cubs with that that three and six road trip.
- 17:21Now Cubs are 18 and five at home, though, so returning home,
- 17:25maybe get the good vibes, Wrigley.
- 17:26But it certainly feels, I'll just say I have an ominous
- 17:31feeling about the series coming up.
- 17:33And it just feels like, yeah, they're going to be in first
- 17:36place in three days. They are year after year.
- 17:40Ken mentioned it with the race, and though they've had a couple
- 17:42of dips, even those dips don't feel like they're happening
- 17:45anymore with Milwaukee. And people have changed, names
- 17:48have changed. I mean, Yelich is a shell of
- 17:49himself. He's been banged up for a big
- 17:51portion of the season. Is it?
- 17:54Just doesn't matter, yeah. Do you go back to drafting?
- 17:58Is it finding those guys under the raid?
- 18:00How do you put together these two organizations, specifically
- 18:03Tampa and Milwaukee? How are they able to
- 18:05consistently win with the shoestring budget that they have
- 18:09year after year? Yeah, I I would throw the
- 18:11Guardians in there too. Those absolutely are exceptional
- 18:15at getting the absolute most out of the players on their roster.
- 18:20And when when they decide to cut bait, whether offseason Freddy
- 18:28Peralta to the bets or what, they decided to trade Josh Ader
- 18:31and promote Devin Williams, but then they traded Devin Williams
- 18:34last year. They, they just, they must be
- 18:39unbelievably good at knowing themselves, knowing their
- 18:43operations, that there's a system in place where they get
- 18:46the most out of the talent on the team.
- 18:48And obviously it doesn't always work out.
- 18:50I mean, we've seen some players be disappointing, but for the
- 18:54most part, it pretty much seems to always work out and, and, and
- 18:57at some point that's not an accident.
- 19:00At some point, that's just how good they are at developing
- 19:03talent, knowing themselves, knowing how to get the most out
- 19:07of their guys. I can't say enough about their
- 19:11front office operations. They are amazing.
- 19:13What have we got? We've got Sprout versus Imanaga,
- 19:16Edge Cubs, then we've got Mizoroski Brown tomorrow, edge
- 19:21Brew Crew, and what's the getaway game?
- 19:24Harrison Cabrera. That's a pretty good three-game
- 19:26series. That's pretty damn good.
- 19:30And I would say when you say Miss Roski, Ben Brown, I do not
- 19:33disagree. But man, Brown, he's been good.
- 19:35Good. Yes, yes, yeah.
- 19:37So that that's like a sneaky great pitching match up there.
- 19:41No doubt. What's your Tuesday like next
- 19:43week? We're off Monday.
- 19:45I'm good. Good.
- 19:46So are we. Thanks, buddy.
- 19:48Appreciate it. Matt Snyder.

- 20:46next. France plays of the day still to
- 20:48come, Circus sports sponsor those game seven in hockey
- 20:52tonight. You going to put it in?
- 20:53I don't know. I don't have a good feel,
- 20:56neither do I. And looking at it sight unseen,
- 20:58this has been tossed up. You can't get a feel of the
- 21:00series. I would probably just take the
- 21:02plus money and probably just go that route.
- 21:05I mean, that would be the direction that I go, but I
- 21:09haven't even looked at it. What kind of plus, well, it's
- 21:11basically even I see it. Is it at this first sight,
- 21:13Sabres -112 And if it's true, then?
- 21:16It's my, well, Buffalo. Well, the Buffalo fans keep the
- 21:18Canadians out of the building. It just jumps off your TV.
- 21:22All the red, white, blue, well, mostly red.
- 21:26They wear their home sweaters. And that red just.
- 21:28Pops it pops it does and they take, it's a six hour drive in
- 21:33there if you can. They're trying to get it in mass
- 21:35to this game tonight. I'm looking at circa right now.
- 21:39Sabres -116 Canadians plus one O 4.
- 21:43I I take the Canadians. That's I think the.
- 21:45Direction. I'm not, I don't feel great
- 21:47about it. I just, you know, I have no feel
- 21:48for this game. Miller and Condon.
- 21:51Matt Rudy next will put a bow on the PGA.
- 21:54It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network. 1:30 on a Monday as we
- 21:58take a look back at the weekend that was in the world, a sports
- 22:01trend. Condon, Ken Miller back with
- 22:03you. It's Miller and Condon on the
- 22:05Iowa Sports Radio Network and Matt Rudy, our next guest.
- 22:09I was telling him, Ken, during the break there, that you were
- 22:12fired up. Yes.
- 22:14Didn't feel like a major. It did Matt good to talk to you.
- 22:17Appreciate the contribution as always.
- 22:20You know, I thought, Matt, when they, when they changed from
- 22:22August to the event, from August on the calendar to May, that
- 22:25this was the most, one of the most impactful changes on the
- 22:28sports calendars that we've seen in a while.
- 22:31I don't feel like that anymore, Matt.
- 22:33Rudy, I don't know what it is because August, obviously we're
- 22:37all football crazy. You know, where we live in the
- 22:38Midwest and you went to Michigan State.
- 22:40You know what it's like there. I just thought it was going to
- 22:43work well in May. I, I think I'm wrong.
- 22:45Matt, where are you on this? Well, I mean, I mean, are you
- 22:49thinking about that because of the marquee value of the guy
- 22:52that won this week? Or if you look at the last few
- 22:55years, though, they've had good winners.
- 22:56Gotti Scheffler is a good winner and Shafley is a good winner.
- 22:59I mean that I think they, they, they get a much more even
- 23:03experience in terms of the weather.
- 23:05I think the the they can pick from other courses that might
- 23:08not be so pleasant to play in. I mean, I guess you could say
- 23:13that having a sauna in August could be part, you know, could
- 23:17be part of the challenge like this is, you know, that's the
- 23:19physical challenge major where you could have heat stroke.
- 23:22I mean, I think May is the right time.
- 23:26And I give the PGA of America credit because they have a
- 23:29fantastic field. They're willing to bring the
- 23:32live guys in so that you can see Jon Ron playing in a major So
- 23:36you can see, you know, the guys that would not be examined.
- 23:40Camp Smith played well the century and where you could
- 23:49want, there was a there was a full leaderboard, there were
- 23:51marquee guys and then by all accounts, the nicest human on
- 23:55the PGA. Yeah, really.
- 23:56One that's won the tournament, so I think that was a good
- 23:58outcome. Yeah, his wife's got some game
- 24:00too. A lot.
- 24:00Watching the Part 3 at the Masters.
- 24:02My gosh, she can hit. It got a swing, no doubt.
- 24:05She's a pro, She's a pro. I know she's a women's European
- 24:08Tour. That's awesome.
- 24:10That this course, I was concerned going into it, as we
- 24:13talked about on Wednesday, leading in that it was going to
- 24:15be, it was going to feel like the John Deere Classic.
- 24:18And no offense to our friends in the Quad Cities, but I wondered
- 24:21with a course like this, the trees that were cleared out, how
- 24:24was going to play? It played well and it got dried
- 24:26out and it was breezy and that thing was fast.
- 24:29But then it lead the other way where the US Open.
- 24:31I'm used to that kind of test. I like a test a year when it
- 24:34comes to the majors. But maybe it was just yesterday
- 24:37and I felt like every time I flipped it on and got over to
- 24:39it, somebody was missing a putt opportunities and nobody could
- 24:43push down that door. Just your overview on the course
- 24:46and the way this played out and something that of course you
- 24:49think can be part of the future and part of the rotation going
- 24:51forward. Well.
- 24:53I I look at the guy. Matt, we're going to have to try
- 25:02you back. Again.
- 25:02Yeah, Matt, we're, we're losing. I think we've got a bad phone
- 25:05line. We'll call you right back, Matt.
- 25:06Rudy, we'll call right? Back and I've used multiple
- 25:08phone lines here. I'm starting to think it's us.
- 25:11Well, and I don't even know if it's us or is there something
- 25:13with Verizon or something? I mean, that's three straight.
- 25:17And Matt's on the eastern part of the country, Matt Snyders in
- 25:24Indiana. I want to say I don't know, but
- 25:26it's it's no good. And we apologize to our audience
- 25:28that we're struggling like this to to hear some of the answers
- 25:31to our questions. We got many more of them to get
- 25:34to and connect here with Matt Rudy and do just that.
- 25:38Trends plays the day still to come, circus sports, we'll
- 25:41sponsor those. Matt, I, I think it's a Verizon
- 25:44problem. We're having trouble.
- 25:45It's not your your end. It's us hearing you.
- 25:48So if you recall, just go ahead. And say is, you know, the, the,
- 25:52the guy who won the tournament, I think he, I think he played
- 25:55the last 63 hole a six or seven holes, 5 under eagle.
- 26:00He made birdies. He made a big long putt on the
- 26:0217th hole. I think.
- 26:04I think the guy who played the best won the tournament.
- 26:07He made putts when he needed to make them.
- 26:08He made short butts. He made long butts.
- 26:11I think the course, you couldn't ask for a better set up.
- 26:14I think 9 under one the tournament.
- 26:16And you know, that's, that's a decently low score, but it's
- 26:19not, you know, 22 under or something like that.
- 26:21I think the course acquitted itself very well.
- 26:25Just watching I, I was flipping around and I saw Scotty playing
- 26:28a hole and he had a three-way, he had a great tee shot and he
- 26:31had a three wood into a par 4. And when was the last time you
- 26:34saw that on the PGA Tour? I mean, I, I think it tested
- 26:38every part of a player's game and it that there was a drivable
- 26:41par 4. So you could take a chance if
- 26:43you wanted to. They had some long par threes.
- 26:45I think it was a nice mix. Yeah, we saw Rory.
- 26:49Dr. That green, we saw Scotty with a a boy.
- 26:53He struggled with the putter all weekend long.
- 26:55You told me about Jon ROM before anybody ever heard of Jon ROM
- 26:59and he ultimately would become Jon ROM and win those
- 27:02tournaments as he has. I'm starting to wonder, is
- 27:05Ludwig Obberg, with the exception of leaving, going to
- 27:08live, etcetera, kind of following the same career path
- 27:11that, you know, he keeps getting close and then one of these
- 27:15years he's going to breakthrough as ROM did.
- 27:17He seemed to be a guy that's been on our radar and ROM was on
- 27:20yours for anybody else. But Aubrey's been on Trents for
- 27:24sure. And I just feel like it's it's
- 27:27coming. Just don't know when because
- 27:29he's got all the, he's got all the tools, right?
- 27:32I, I think that's a a fantastic comparison and I think even more
- 27:36than Jon ROM, he, he looks like, I mean that his swing is just
- 27:40incredible to watch. He just looks like he's going to
- 27:42win the tournament. And I think what, what when you
- 27:45get to great players like that, you almost forget he's only been
- 27:48around for two years. This is this is the beginning of
- 27:50year 3. And it takes some time to figure
- 27:53these things out. Scotty Scheffler needed an
- 27:56entire first year of the PGA Tour where he didn't win
- 27:58anything. And we started talking about how
- 28:00he, you know, when, when was he going to do it and when was he
- 28:02going to do it? And I think your, your
- 28:04comparison is right on. Once the light goes on and you
- 28:06start to win these, then Xander Shockley was the same way.
- 28:09I, I, I know I spoke on your show a bunch of times out of
- 28:14Shockley winning two majors in the same year, that that was a
- 28:17guy who was right there on the cusp.
- 28:18And all of a sudden he wins the PGA and he goes and wins the
- 28:20British Open. Because you know, you, there's
- 28:23just that one piece that you need to discover and be in
- 28:26contention and over. It's done it at the Masters and
- 28:29now he's done it at the PGA Championship.
- 28:30And I think that's definitely a guy that's that's on the come.
- 28:34You know, we talked about at the top with you, Matt, about the
- 28:36potential moving back to PGA to August. 1 of the think pieces I
- 28:40was reading last week brought up the idea and I really like this
- 28:43thought is if you don't, you keep the calendar as it's
- 28:46currently constructed, Masters in April, PGA in May.
- 28:49Of course then what we get with the US Open in the British that
- 28:52the playoffs that fall flat. Even I think for a lot of casual
- 28:56golf fans, by the time we get into August is potentially
- 28:59putting a couple of those on the West Coast and leading into some
- 29:02primetime golf in August where we get a couple of West Coast
- 29:06venues. Is that something that makes
- 29:07sense for you and for the casual, not the hardcore golf
- 29:10person, not not for the people that you know, Matt, but more
- 29:13the people that are with us to get the casuals back involved
- 29:16with it, some West Coast playoff golf.
- 29:19Is that something that could pop for the PGA Tour?
- 29:23I think it could and I, and I actually think putting some PGA
- 29:25Tour playoff events worldwide would be pretty cool to have
- 29:30them be in prime time, but have them be in a, in a different
- 29:34international environment. You want to take away the
- 29:36argument that the PGA Tour is too provincial into America
- 29:39based, Have some of the playoffs be somewhere else.
- 29:42You haven't, you haven't be in the UK, haven't be in Asia,
- 29:44haven't be in Africa. I think the adding some, you
- 29:47know, some exotic aspect to it like that.
- 29:50I, I wish there was a way that one of the majors could be
- 29:53international in a different international spot every year.
- 29:55And I don't think you could do that with APJ of America event.
- 29:58But, you know, having something or, or U.S.
- 30:02Open, but that having that piece to it, whether it's a West Coast
- 30:06event or an international flair, I think anything that gives
- 30:10somebody a different look, you know, puts players.
- 30:12And I think that's why the Open Championship is my favorite
- 30:14because it puts people in a different look.
- 30:17The golf courses don't look the same.
- 30:19The strategy is different. The weather is different.
- 30:21I think having some different factors as opposed to standard
- 30:24golf course one O 1 is what makes it fun to watch.
- 30:27Let's talk about Shinnecock. That's where the US Open will be
- 30:30played in about a month's time from right now, if memory
- 30:34serves. You like this course, right?
- 30:35And this can be a real, you know what as far as make leading to
- 30:40some very some very difficult to rounds for some of the best
- 30:44players in the world. Your thoughts on Shinnecock?
- 30:46Oh, yeah. I mean, depending on what the
- 30:47weather is, we've had, we had a super wet spring in the
- 30:51Northeast. And but I don't know how easy
- 30:53it's going to be to make it as firm and fast as they would want
- 30:56to have it. But that, that place when, if it
- 30:58gets baked out and it gets windy, it's like playing in the
- 31:01parking lot and, you know, all of a sudden the green start
- 31:04turning purple. And you got people out there,
- 31:07you know, stringing the greens in between groups just to keep
- 31:09them alive. You know, I'm trying.
- 31:11I know you love it super hard. You're going to get your wish.
- 31:14If they can get the course set up the way they want, they might
- 31:17not ever finish. You know that.
- 31:18This is where you get those, you know, plus 4 + + 4 + 5 + 6, you
- 31:23know, championship scores. It's just a different, you know,
- 31:26it's a different test, different kind of golf.
- 31:28And, you know, this is where Phil hit his ball when it was
- 31:30still moving, you know, because he was so annoyed that he
- 31:32couldn't, he couldn't get the ball up on the green.
- 31:35So I don't know. I don't know if that kind of
- 31:36frustration is my favorite thing to see.
- 31:39But like I said before, if I can watch 4 majors in a year and the
- 31:43character of all four is significantly different, and you
- 31:47know, if you're going to look at a thumbnail of all four and in
- 31:50the picture was very different, that would be a successful year.
- 31:53You're going to like this year then, by the sounds.
- 31:55Of this is going to be a fun one, yes, I like to see that and
- 31:57I want to see more frustration once a year.
- 31:59I'm happy with it. Once a year to have an unfair
- 32:02sometimes test of your golf. He wants blood. +5 winning
- 32:07score. Yeah, I want to see that one
- 32:09time of year. Scotty Scheffler.
- 32:11Oh, he won one time. It was the first event of the
- 32:13season and has not won since. A lot of 2nd place finishes in
- 32:16there. Got off to the great start we
- 32:18were looking for on Thursday and never got it going over the. 125
- 32:23putts. 125 is not going to win many golf tournaments, certainly
- 32:26with that. Is it just as simple as the flat
- 32:29stick? Anything else got new baby?
- 32:31What's going on with Scheffler because our expectations are so
- 32:35big for him? Oh yeah, I mean, just to be that
- 32:39huge of a favorite in every event.
- 32:42I don't think the Tiger Woods era spoiled us, you know, where
- 32:47someone could be that that much of A favorite and that dominant
- 32:50and that good every single time. I think in regular human golf,
- 32:54especially when there's, you know, you know, when you're a
- 32:57normal family person who is invested in your family life
- 33:00too, I think there's streaks and slumps that come with life,
- 33:04right? I mean, and if you can, if you
- 33:07can look back on your career and say, you know, I contended in
- 33:10some majors and I won a couple events, but I didn't win a major
- 33:13and that that was the worst season I had.
- 33:14I mean, that's, that's really not a, it's not a bad career to
- 33:18have. So I think all we're really
- 33:19seeing is kind of a reconsolidation.
- 33:22You know, you had some struggles with the putter before a couple
- 33:24of years ago and he sorted it out.
- 33:26And one thing that about Scotty that is so impressive to me is
- 33:30every single year, he's always searching to get a little bit
- 33:33better. And I think that that quest is
- 33:36not always linear. You know, sometimes, you know,
- 33:38you're looking for things and you put some improvements in
- 33:40place and it takes a little bit of time to, to figure out how
- 33:43to, how to make it come together when you play.
- 33:46But you know, I think this is, this is what a normal career,
- 33:50you know, career arc looks like. You don't win 2 majors every
- 33:54year. You don't win a major every
- 33:55year. You know, if you're still
- 33:57looking at a guy who's on pace to win something like 20 majors,
- 34:00which would put him in inner, inner inner circle Hall of Fame,
- 34:04his status. So I think it's too early to say
- 34:07that he's washed up. How about Bryson Dechambeau?
- 34:10Too early. Well, I, I have a lot of
- 34:14sympathy for the, the live guys just in the disarray that's
- 34:17happening now. You know, they all obviously
- 34:20made their bed and can sleep in it.
- 34:21But when you look at the way the rug has been pulled out, I think
- 34:25of all the things you expected from a super wealthy, you know,
- 34:28the the piff is such a wealthy, there was so much money behind
- 34:33this that I think the one thing they didn't predict that in the
- 34:36middle of the season, all of a sudden they would just say, you
- 34:38know what, we're not going to pay for this anymore.
- 34:40It's just an odd thing to try to deal with.
- 34:43And Bryson, the stakes for him are different than other
- 34:45players. He's going to just try to decide
- 34:47if he wants to just go and be like a YouTube personality who
- 34:50plays in a couple of tournaments every year.
- 34:53I mean, that is a that is a big sea.
- 34:55That is a sea change in a person's career.
- 34:58And it's not a big surprise that that, you know, the
- 35:00conversations you have to have on the business side and you
- 35:02know, all these things twirling around the back could make it so
- 35:05that you're not exactly focused in the week like PJ Week.
- 35:10Final one for me, Rory, if you would have told me he shoots 4
- 35:13under outside of the par fives, I'm like, oh, he's right there.
- 35:17He's even on the par fives this week.
- 35:18Just unthinkable. There was the one, it was the
- 35:22first par 5 yesterday. He bombs it out there almost 400
- 35:25yards. He's got a 7 iron in two par 5
- 35:28and he basically 3 putts. He was on the fringe and doesn't
- 35:31get it. Rory also though, kind of seemed
- 35:34like a jerk at at times. Is it?
- 35:36Is it just yeah, McCaffrey. Yeah, maybe.
- 35:41Maybe they're the same realm there.
- 35:42What's going on with Rory? You know, the interesting thing
- 35:46is if you twisted his arm, he would say he didn't play all
- 35:49that great at Augusta. So so basically he's been
- 35:52playing kind of B minus golf and he has a win and a top five in a
- 35:55major. So so all things considered, I
- 35:58think he's in a decent spot. But we talked about this a
- 36:03little bit, I think in some of the shows that we did later in
- 36:06the year, last year. I think the the amount of miles
- 36:10that he has been has on him from just having to be the spokesman
- 36:14for all this PGA Tour stuff over the last five years mixed in
- 36:18with trying to win the Masters, to win the career Grand Slam.
- 36:21I just think he's probably over it a little bit like, you know,
- 36:24he just, he just wants to be left alone.
- 36:26He does. He doesn't want to have to talk
- 36:27to everybody after every round. He doesn't want to be have to be
- 36:29the spokesman And you know, I I think he's kind of in the I'm
- 36:34I'm going to I'm going to turn off my good behavior for a
- 36:36little bit and and you know what, he's probably earned that.
- 36:39You can. You know, this is a guy who's
- 36:41been accessible. He's been a great quote.
- 36:44He did the forward to one of the books I wrote and he could not
- 36:46have been nicer. Every interaction I've ever had
- 36:48with him. He's a professional, nice
- 36:50person, he's allowed to have a little bit of a time to blow off
- 36:53some steam and put away his put away his good behaviour for a
- 36:56minute. Yeah, we did talk about it.
- 36:57You're exactly right. Last year, seemingly good stuff.
- 36:59Matt. Rudy, we will talk to you in
- 37:01advance of the US Open. Matt, thanks man.
- 37:03Appreciate it. You back, see you good.
- 37:05To talk to you, Matt Rudy, Golf Digest, formerly of Golf Digest,
- 37:08where he wrote for decades. Trent's plays of the day are
- 37:12coming up next. Circus Sports has those.
- 37:14TC will give you that on the other side, 6 1/2, the number of
- 37:19the basketball games, it's 6 1/2 or 4 and it's 6 1/2, right?
- 37:22It is currently ta ta ta 6 1/2. By the way, do you know where
- 37:26the favorite is to win the US Open at Shinnecock?
