- 0:00Away we go. [upbeat music] Right on.
- 0:17Right on Can, can you dig it? Right on. You jive turkeys. [laughs] Here we go again. Hey, everybody. It's that time again, Full Spectrum Cycling. See me get that little jiggy-jiggy in there? Ooh. Yeah.
- 0:35According to my very brief research, there is no area code 338 in the entire United States 'merica- I didn't- Or this- Yeah... or this continent.
- 0:44I didn't look that deep into it, but I did notice that the 338 Winchester Magnum is the most common. It's like a sniper rifle round, isn't it? Yeah. Something- Medium bore belted cartridge- Mm...
- 0:54introduced in 1958 for heavy, big game hunting, like- Big game... elk and moose. And, and human That's what the bushes- Human hunting... and the elk hunters And you get the elk- Hunting humans...
- 1:02and you, and you kill the elk, and you get the cheeks, the cheeks, cheek medallions. They're delicious. Ah. Elk medallions are delicious. Mm. I worked at a game restaurant and it was really good. You said game, right?
- 1:14Yeah. Good. Just checking. Hello. Hey. Uh, it's also, in Roman numerals, probably the lo- one of the longest you can do in the 300s. CCCXXXV. Huh. Hm. Very long.
- 1:30Anywho- I didn't know this podcast was getting so educational. Well- Well, you gotta do a little... yeah, you started it with your numberala- numerala- Six, seven... my bumberology, bumbleholeology- Yeah...
- 1:39that you did that one time. Yeah. Anyhoo. It had something to do with something good in the, uh- So-... Chinese numeric slang. Yeah. It means let's think about it a bit- Right on... in numeric Chinese slang. Okay. Okay.
- 1:56I'll think about it. There you go. There's some- Hey, I have to use my world languages and literature muscles.
- 2:02Yes, this will be the only education you get in this show, so if [laughs] if you're hoping to learn something- We're gonna go downhill from here... yeah, you might as well- It's all downhill from here...
- 2:08you might as well turn this off. Hold on tight. It has been- Okay... the last day, today, well now couple days ago, s- unseasonably warm in the Milwaukee area. Crazy. [laughs] I saw 89 degrees yesterday. Yeah.
- 2:23I don't know if it actually hit 90, but- It did not, but they- It hit, well it hit 92 on the little gizmatron on the van. Oh, okay. So I don't know how accurate, but- Semi, relatively. Especially if you're rolling.
- 2:36If you're sitting under, you know, the sun and you're stationary, probably not as much, but if you're moving- Moving around, yeah, yeah... yeah. It was- I think it's pretty all right... it was not pleasant. Toasty.
- 2:45Not pleasant. I didn't like it. Freaking AC's on in October in the shop here, so. [laughs] Woke up last night in the, and I'm like, "Why is it so loud in our house?"
- 2:54And I'm like, "Oh my God, the freaking AC is running- [laughs]... at 3:00 in the morning." Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it was hot. Wow. It was warmer.
- 3:01So you guys see, I mean, no, our, our, our listener, our, our viewer can't see what we see from where we are and what a mess the studio is unless you- Five Minute Epoxy... see it in the reflection of me goggles.
- 3:13Yeah, I actually made a video today going, here's the interesting thing about a camera. You don't see what's behind it or even in front of it. You just see what we want the camera to see.
- 3:24So look for that very educational video coming up. Ha. Ha. Probably not really gonna be any news to people that do camera stuff, but I mean, look at how [laughs] messy this place is.
- 3:36Anyhow, uh, yeah, it's been- I'm fine... it's been three weeks. Uh, we'll be back on the two-week thing now for some stretch. Yeah. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. I don't know how long we get through, but,
- 3:46um- Yeah, the only, uh, wrinkle I could see for that second Tuesday of November would be if Jack White tickets were won. Oh, well, available and won.
- 3:58So while we're on this- But even that, even that, we probably could do the show and go out to that. W- while we're on this subject, I was just at this- Venue... event, this venue to see, of course, Beck. Ah.
- 4:14Um- The Devil's Haircut, it was mine... and, and he, he, I, I left before that. Oh, actually that's not true. I did see Devil's Haircut. I had to leave because we had a babysitter. Um, [laughs]
- 4:24this is what I tell everyone. In 100 years, the Pabst is gonna be another 100 years old. Yep. Mm-hmm. That building's gonna be rebuilt four times. Yeah. Yeah. It's the most sterile
- 4:37money-making buil- it's c- totally designed to make money. Sure, sure. It was. It, the inside looked kinda like- Boring... it kinda looked like, uh, the Silvy in Madison This is, this is The Landmark- Yeah...
- 4:47if anybody's wondering. The Landmark Credit Union owned by- Live... Ticketmaster- Live Nation... or Live Nation. Yeah, yeah. Um, beer was, are you ready for this? In my, in my van, my van loan company [laughs] Landmark.
- 4:58Uh, guess how much- I had a loan with Landmark too. [laughs] Guess how much A Happy Place was. $16. $20. Holy cow Batman. Wrong. Okay, I don't want- Was it more than that? I don't, I read it- Less than that?
- 5:10Molly said it was 20 bucks. I was gonna go less, way less. No, Molly said it was like, she's like, "Do you wanna go get another round of drinks? It's gonna be 40 bucks." Maybe that's after tip.
- 5:17I'm like- [sighs] Probably... for a glass of wine and a beer? Go fuck yourself. Yeah. That, that, yeah. Well, I did correct the little code on, uh, uh, Turner for PIL.
- 5:30[clicks tongue] Um, yeah, okay, that was like 13, 14, you know, for, uh, I think 12 maybe for the beer. I can't remember what it was, but I then asked, um, "Hey, could I just do a, a Jack and, or a whiskey and coke?
- 5:49How much would that run?" "Hmm, 12 bucks." Oh. A- and they probably- Yeah... double pour it too. Uh, it was, yeah. Nice. I was like, "Okay."
- 5:56I didn't, I didn't wanna sit there and like, "Oh, I'm gonna mess your count up and- Right... be that guy." Yeah. But no, it was a hearty pour And- Good, good... I, yes. I was like, "Oh, here. Okay."
- 6:04The ac- the acoustics were good Not that I need to be all liquor, brown liquor drunk at- Right... a show, 'cause that might not end up well. The, the acoustics were good. [laughs] I get it. It was built for this. Sure.
- 6:14But- At what cost? I felt like I was either in- At what cost?... prison auditorium or a high school auditorium. Yeah. Sure Like, just not my thing at all. Is this the... Did you guys ride down there? We did.
- 6:26This is when Molly experienced the- Her first push of the button [laughs]...
- 6:29the wonder, the wonder of the bass boat [laughs] Going up that hill by Uncle Wolfie's, and she's like- Yeah, that's probably the- She's like, "This is so much [laughs] better." I don't know. Oh, yeah. Yeah...
- 6:38going up Juneau straight up the two blocks is, like, less horrible than the Net. Yep, she was very excited. It was fun. So we, Wendy and I went to see Footloose at, uh, the Rep. Everybody cut, everybody cut.
- 6:52[drum noise] Yep. That, it was very good. I was, I was pleasantly surprised. Uh, Sydney's- Cool... stage managing it, so she got- Oh, great... so she got us tickets, which I think were, like, 95 bucks or something.
- 7:04So I'm like, "Huh. Guess how much steak dinner at Jackson Grill is?" 95 bucks. Each. Each. Yeah. So it was like, well, since we got the tickets for nary a cost- Might as well...
- 7:14let's go have some [laughs] good steak- Mm-hmm... at Jackson Grill, which we did, and it was fantastic. Nice. Yeah. That w- that was my rationale at the PIL show, where I was like, "I got the tickets." Yeah.
- 7:24So I'm double dipping on the merch, got two shirts. They didn't have a lot of merch, though. I would have, if they had more- No... nick-nacky shit- Since we're done with-... I probably would've...
- 7:33all the bands we've seen since the last podcast, the incredibly beautiful vinyl that They Might Be Giants was selling- Hmm... signed. Really? How much, 40? Uh, more than that. Oh.
- 7:45But the line was so long I couldn't do it. So you went to They Mi- Uh, did you see this in the show notes? No. [laughs] Well, they're in- Well, if this is so-... serendipity...
- 7:54so we're going, we're, we're skipping way ahead to, to Bikes on a Bus already. But we're skipping backward and forward. We're, we're going back forward time-wise- Yeah, mm-hmm...
- 8:01but forward ti- down the line in the thing. Light s- Um, so, so-... light speed skimming is one word... [laughs] so co-founder John Linnell- Bike messenger... worked as a bike messenger on the streets of Manhattan.
- 8:13During their early years. In a 1988 interview, he described crashing his poorly maintained work bike- [laughs]...
- 8:19while carrying 40 pounds on his back, injuring his wrist badly enough to stop the band from performing for roughly four months. I did not know this. Bike accident. Wow.
- 8:27Uh, that in- that interruption helped him and John Flansburgh, uh, develop their famous Dial-A-Song answering machine project. That's awesome. So a bike accident- Forced Dial-A-Song. Yeah. That's awesome.
- 8:42I mean, so this whole Bikes on a Bus thing, I like it. [laughs] Could be its own, almost its- It was a great show... it could be its own podcast.
- 8:49But- If I would've known about this in advance, we could've maybe said, "Hey, bro. Let's go, go for a ride, bro."
- 8:54So the trumpet, the trumpet player from They Might Be Giant- Giants was the trumpet player for- You keep saying Trump. Trumpet. Okay, just checking. Um, was- Gotta land that second T. [laughs]...
- 9:05the trumpet player for, I believe- Trumpets player... uh, one of the late night talk shows. He's absolutely phenomenal. The, that whole show is always good. If you see They Might Be Giants- The Wax, the Max Weinberg 7?
- 9:16Yeah, it might be. I don't know. I'm just coming up with old ones. If, if you wanna see a great tight-knit band besides Metallica- Hmm... see They Might Be Giants.
- 9:23Who was our, uh, who was our famous trumpet playing orchestra guy from the Johnny Carson show? Doc Severinsen. There you go, Doc. Yeah. Uh, Doc. One of, one of the two best Docs next to, uh- Dre?... Doc Holiday.
- 9:37Or Doc Martin. [laughs] Or Dre. Not Doc Martin. [laughs] Dre. Doc Martin suck. That's... I mean, h- they are... P- people like the style, but it's a terrible shoe. Oh, they're super comfortable. No, they suck.
- 9:47Yes, they are. No, they don't. Nope, they are terrible. Well, once you get them on- You just got weird feet [laughs]... yeah, it's the, it's, it's the s- When?... the struggle to get them on.
- 9:56Maybe, maybe 50 years ago they were all right, before they got all trendy. Mine were made in England. I don't know what the new ones are.
- 10:01Thanks to the freaking Clash and all those other PIL and whatnot people, it's- I know By the way, if you- As we were talking about... keeping them out.
- 10:08[laughs] New Rockfest '97, when I s- had to sit outside the warehouse shoe tent and guard single- Doc Martin... Doc Martin boots. 'Cause people were gonna steal one boot? Eh, I don't, I j- Maybe. Maybe...
- 10:19I just did as I was told. Maybe they were gonna look good nowhere.
- 10:21I was a, I was a lowly promotion intern at that point, and sat in the rain, and then they were nice, and then they let me backstage, and I got to see cool stuff. Heck yeah. [laughs] The beginning of the end.
- 10:36This is the end of e-bikes at, hopefully at Minooka Park. [laughs] I got a, there's a letter.
- 10:43I don't know how I got the letter, but Waukesha County Parks Department, "Reaching out to neighbors and residents of Minooka with a friendly reminder regarding electric bikes within the park." That's a no-no.
- 10:56Well, it's a no-no, except for class one, because, you know, your old folks like myself might- Right. Right. But the-... avail themselves. But there's people tearing the trail.
- 11:05Like, like, like, like- Like it's a damn-... ree, ree, ree, ree... like it's a damn motocross course in there. Oh. Guys with their Surly's. I, it's, they're gonna, I hate to say it, but I see the ruining of trails.
- 11:15I do too. What happens is instead of your nice single track, you now start to widen out every corner.
- 11:20You start to turn everything into a berm, and it's like, that's great- And then you get the crags on the certain, 'cause they're not gonna give a shit if it's really wet conditions. Right.
- 11:31They're gonna eat the shit out of it. So then all of a sudden it's like, rant, rant, rant, dries up, and then all of a sudden- Yeah... you got your- You got your-... whatever... you got your- The trail code...
- 11:39your canyons of Arizona, your Grand Canyons. Right. Right. Yeah. And also- Yeah... what's great, though, is leaves. We're getting leaves out on the trail now [laughs] They're so crunchy. Slippery. Yeah.
- 11:49[laughs] Slippery out there. But they're crunchy at this point before they're moist. Yeah. They're not wet. They're not moist. They might get moist m- soon, but yes, they are quite c- Crackly... crackly.
- 11:59Yeah, I, I don't know. I guess it's kinda weird that it was almost 90 degrees, or 90 degrees, and the leaves are falling off the trees. Yeah. And, you know, obviously the light is...
- 12:08We're in that time of year when things- Every day you notice, like, "Holy crap, it's, it's light-" Oh, yeah 6:30 and it's dark... it's light earlier. Yeah. It's the time of year, I think- Oh, the view-...
- 12:18when it happens the quickest... I gotta say the- The quickening... the view, the view I got from the new office really is, it pops. It's spectacular. Yeah. It pops. Are you north facing? Mm-hmm. Nice.
- 12:27You're looking over Downer Woods over there? No. I am looking over- Way further... over- Charwood? [laughs] No. D- uh, well, part of Charwood, but it would be, like, a northeast angle shot from Downer. Oh, yeah.
- 12:43So I see a little bit of along Downer with a, like, weird dome thing on Green Hall that looks cool. I think it's a Planetarium. It's not the Planetarium. No, Planetarium's the other- But, but- Oh...
- 12:55but it used to be maybe- It used to be... Well, it's an observatory, if nothing else... obser- torium... it's not a Planetarium, it's an observatory. Oh, okay. Observ- ary.
- 13:01They used to have, they used to have a telescope in there. I didn't know that. It's an observa- Okay... ary. [laughs] Is that the Jewish museum now? Is it that building? Yes. The Green Hall. That's what I thought. Yeah.
- 13:09The Green Hall. Or- Yeah, yeah... yeah, yeah, yeah. Green Hall and Green Museum N- yeah. Mm-hmm. But- Yes, yes, yes. But all the same, it looks like all these little broccolis that are changing color.
- 13:22Yeah, well- Sorry, that wasn't [laughs] there was no mushrooms involved on that one. [laughs] Um, the trees are broccolis. [laughs] What, uh- It's an album name By Dana Carvey... by, by Acid Mothers Temple. Yeah.
- 13:40I could've sworn that was Thursday. I don't know. I'm still thinking of moseying down there. Gotta, gotta keep the Japanese band once per month alive thing after Sister Paul last- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm... last, la- last month.
- 13:54Was that a bug? There's a thing flying around in here. I don't know. Damn, they should be- Tree, house, or something... they should have been- May have come from the 12-pack...
- 14:01you know what's weird is- It may have come from [bottles clinking] Whoa! [laughs] Nice job, Tony. The 12-pack. [laughs] How, how, how quick was that? I didn't really put that into consideration.
- 14:11[laughs] Well, do tell us about our, uh, our libation for the evening. Uh, what is it? [laughs] No, it's the Barrel Man Ale. Wait, this was- Li-... nine bucks a 12-pack? Yeah. Oh, shit. Leinenkugel's Barrel Man Ale.
- 14:28I guess it bears- The brewers are doing very well right now... I guess it bears making note of the fact that they've been kicking all over the Major League Baseball- Mm-hmm. They wanna feel-... fancy team people...
- 14:40with the American Throw Ball. Sports ball. They take the Throw Ball. I'm gonna take an Adrian, an Adrian. [laughs] Well, you gotta play that Throw Ball.
- 14:50[laughs] I guess you could give me one of those and then somehow you can, I could- Yeah, I didn't see what the elkahoosie on this is. 5, 5.3- But it-... I believe... 5.3? Okay. You drink it all?
- 14:58And it's a amber, amber ale, which I was not aware of. I was not guessing that at all. I mean, just 'cause- It wasn't denoted anywhere- Yeah... on the- I know. It's, you know- It says ale... well, it says Barrel Man Ale.
- 15:08Well, yeah. It doesn't say amber. It's, uh, it says it right here on the top of the can. Yeah. And on the top of the box. It's there. Oh, yeah, it does. Okay. All right. But I don't read like that.
- 15:16That's r- requires me to use my brain. It looks like a... Is that an oar? I guess that's an oar. Uh, yeah. Is, is Barrel Man still, is he still a thing? He's one of them, yeah. Okay.
- 15:26They still have a mascot of him around just because it's cool and old-timey and nostalgic, and why not? Do that. Because it's better than when they had the M and the B and a shaft or of wheat coming out of the- Yeah...
- 15:38logo and whatever. It was like- No, I like the glove... and it was, like, blue and purple... I like the glove and ball thing... and w- you know. You want a, you want a fun fact? Yeah, yeah.
- 15:45I've been all but one racing sausage. Oh, yeah. Chorizo, I believe we discovered- I think-... was the one you weren't, have not been... I, I, I believe I have not been to chorizo. [laughs] It's...
- 15:56Uh- Which is funny 'cause I don't give one rat's ass about- It's kind of burpy beer. [laughs]... the Brewers I always pick, I always pick the chorizo.
- 16:00If I'm at the game and I'm, it's like, "Okay," you know, everyone throw a buck in. No, you can't. I always do. 'Cause that, that sombrero does not work for running. Oh, yeah. Wind resistance.
- 16:09It does not condition for- Yeah. He doesn't win a lot, but he wins. They should have- Or it wins... one of the guys should have- They win... like a, like a time trial helmet on and see if that helps him win. Right?
- 16:18[laughs] Uh- But, um, I was, you know, I was like, "Oh." Uh, well, I had a, I had a, a thing of, uh, Trooper West Coast Ale, langonitas, which is good. I- we've had it before. Star-shaped trooper? Or just trooper?
- 16:33Uh, Iron Maiden Trooper. Oh, Iron Maiden. Oh, there you go. Yeah. So we've had it before, and I, so I had that in there, and as I'm walking up, I was like, "Ooh, wait a minute," and then, "Ooh, wait a minute.
- 16:42[laughs] $9." I'm like, "Wow, it's, like, $3 less than one beer at the ballpark [laughs] for 12 beers." [laughs] That's a good way to look at it. And you know what? It's not bad. I know.
- 16:51I am- No, for an amber- It's drinkable... and I don't do a lot of ambers. I do not either. Um- But it's pretty good... I mean, if it's the only thing there, m- yeah, it'll, it'll be that. It ain't a Coors.
- 17:01[burps] It is burpy, though. Yeah, it is kinda burpy. I don't burp. A little bit. Get ready. [burps] You're not farting, are you? Oh, it's going out the other way. [laughs] Damn it. [laughs] That's... Damn. Oh.
- 17:13And those are not showers pass. [laughs] No, they're club rides. Not, no, not the... But showers pass at least lock them in. I need that more. They did. They did. Yeah. They did. They did.
- 17:21Speaking of showers- [laughs]... well, sort of speaking of showers, showers fast pass, uh, we- [laughs] Pass gas... I think... So the- [laughs]
- 17:31There's another company called Oarnot that makes some pretty cool- [laughs]... cycling clothing. And I believe, uh, thanks Billy, if Billy's gonna send us some Oarnot stuff to test out. Oh, cool.
- 17:43They have some really cool casual cycling clothing that's technical, which is- I love that... we're all, that's what we're all about, right? Yeah.
- 17:52You, you don't wanna be a billboard and- I don't wanna have to change clothes to ride my fucking bike. Right.
- 17:57I d- I think most, except for when I wear a cotton T-shirt that has Steel Is Real or Podcast MKE on it- I wear these club rides to work... or Hula Maka Imosh.
- 18:07I, the, it, when I wear long pants, every single pair of my pants are Swerve I really, I really, really, really, really hope they come back, 'cause some of them are getting quite wore. [laughs] They're getting wore out.
- 18:19These used to be black. They are now somewhat gray. [laughs] Mm-hmm. Um, stop putting bleach in with the black claws, please. Mm-hmm.
- 18:30Uh, another thing, which I'm s- kind of excited about, um, in fact, I think Michael's significant other still has one of these older versions. You sh- Kim still has a State Bicycle fat bike, right? Yep. Yep, yep, yep.
- 18:42The old Monolith, the, uh, Neapolitan Monolith? Yeah, I remember that. Uh, Megalith. Megalith. Megalith. Monolith, Megalith. Yeah, that was it. Yeah, Monolith is the one I did the story for- Okay...
- 18:50way, way, way, way back So we've, so we've, we've had them before, so, uh, those fine folks are, uh, actually... Well, yeah, it's Thursday, right? Good, because the embargo ended yesterday.
- 19:02[laughs] So there will be a story on fatbike.com about the new V2 version of the aluminum State Bicycle fat bike, which I think they just call a fat bike. Okay. Fat bike V2.
- 19:16Uh- Well, aluminum will be better than- It is alum-... whatever...inium. Yeah. It'll be lighter than the- They made some interesting choices for, for components on it and stuff.
- 19:24Um, and you know- Well, no, it's a learning curve, I can tell. I mean, from what- It's like- Just from Monolith to Megalith, it was definite- Yeah.
- 19:30Well- And then gear it, like it, yeah, just the gear or just the componentry. Right. And now again, okay, if you're gonna just change it from steel to aluminum, yeah, you're gonna... Because it's a heavy bike.
- 19:42So it's got some inter- It's a, it was a- It's got some interesting stuff on it, and, uh, I think it's gonna be, like, 1199 or something. It's an, it's a- Mm-hmm...
- 19:50for a, for an aluminum with decent components- Yeah Five, five inch or four? It's good. Uh, 4.5 maybe. Okay. Okay.
- 19:58The, okay, so this is where always in the past we always bashed [laughs] State Bicycles' tire choices, but to be fair, they were inexpensive bikes, and that's your first upgrade on any inexpensive fat bike- Yeah...
- 20:10is tires, because that's the one that makes the most difference. And these are probably no different. They're Kenda Juggernauts, which are a decent tire, but these are the 30 TPI version, so they're probably- Heavy...
- 20:22upgradeable after you wear 'em out- Yeah... after skidding all over the neighborhood with them. Mm-hmm. Yeah. 'Cause it's fun. It's, uh, dropper post compatible. You can get all sorts of cool stuff.
- 20:30The one thing I kinda like about it, and Tony likes the box system for the, the wide range nine speed, this has a wide range Shimano eight speed system. What? Yeah. So it's like, I don't know, 11 to 45 or something.
- 20:45It's a big range. And I like that for a fat bike because you're not trying to keep your cadence at a certain RPM all the time to stay in the Peloton or whatever. You're- [laughs]
- 20:56You know, you, you got a bailout gear or two, and- Pretty affordable upgrades, I'm betting. You could. You know what I mean? I mean, if you- Or maintenance... if you really had to.
- 21:02I mean, but if you have an eight, an eight speed chain is nothing nowadays. Yeah, but, uh- Cassettes...
- 21:06again, the thing I like about those especially is that if you're riding on the beach, those things are way more forgiving than your fancier, m- wider, uh, or more speed, more gear things, things. It's also a UDH
- 21:21derailleur hanger, so you can put your fancy AXS $5,000 derailleur on there if you really wanted to. I don't. Not sure why you'd want to. [laughs] Uh, it comes in a raw color and a red color. Raw?
- 21:36Raw being raw aluminium. Ah. Shiny. Uh- That was sh- the Gordon Ramsay raw. [laughs] I- So we have like, oh, hmm... okay, so this is, we had the, we had the Salsa Bear Grease, you know?
- 21:49Oh, uh, also the geometry on this thing is tending towards that trail side of stuff again. Way better. Not actually that far off the Bear Grease, really. My bear pig.
- 21:59I don't know that that, again, maybe for all season people who are bashing around and whatever, which is probably most people since most people...
- 22:07When we don't even have snow here anymore, and we're in Wisconsin, where we used to get snow a lot. We're part of the stereotype, for God's sakes. Yeah. We can't even live up to it.
- 22:17Well, not u- not unless you're above Highway 8 there up in, uh, Norton, Wisconsin. Up, yeah. Um, so it's at, like, a 66 degree head tube angle, 74 seat tube. So I'm curious
- 22:29to do some trail riding with it before we get snow. Hopefully they show up, it shows up, they show up before we may inevitably get some snow. Uh, as I sent you a picture yesterday, I, uh, rode a 32- Yes, you-...
- 22:45when I was at- 30, a 32er... when I was at Flannel Fest. It was a Salsa. Salsa. I was, um- Salsa... I was- That's the forbidden brands...
- 22:56I w- for labor term, I'm just saying, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it rode. There was a- I, I just did a little run up the street and back, but I'm like, "Okay, I get this." It's drop barred. It's- Yeah...
- 23:06you know, it's drifters. I think a lot of them will be. I, I'm sure they are. I mean, they're made... You know why, you know why? They're gravel bikes. Gravel. Gravel bike. We're all about the gravel.
- 23:15There was a dude next door that had, was at Flannel Fest, I think, and he was saying, "Were you the guy that took that out?" I go, "No, that was Tony, but..." Next door over here? [laughs] Yeah.
- 23:24So he, I think he's a wheel and sprocket guy that had the bike. Yeah. He was- Wheel and sprocket? Yeah, he's a wheel and sprocket. Sprocket. Um- It was, it was way more fun than I expected it to be.
- 23:33Well, also- I had also had a lot of beers. Coming up [laughs] Flannel Fest or the ride? Both. Hmm. Flannel Fest was also fun. The BMX guys were [laughs] fucking dope. But no Rollie. Oh, they were good.
- 23:47Uh- Where's Rollie?... another, another story that I have in the works coming up is about, uh, the Bear Claw Tomac. We, I think we talked about it last show briefly, probably. I don't remember.
- 23:59I'm not sure if it's named after John Tomac, who I think is also from Michigan. It's spelled a little differently. But it is a 27.5 fat bike, you know, normal wide, wide 4.5 whatever. So it's super slacky?
- 24:14Also 32s, though. Oh. Because turns out the math works very oddly in this case. Your 27.5 by 4.5, I forget the number, it's 805 maybe millimeters all the way around. Your 32 inch is like 813.
- 24:32Or it could be- So it's nearly perfect... it could be vice versa, but they're almost exactly the same. So it's- So your geometry is kind of- My brain just popped... made to do this switch. So I can't run rim brakes. No.
- 24:43Those are coming back though, have you seen? No. Heck yeah. Dude, you get- No... the Fred Flintstones. No one needs disc brakes. Do you know what a, do you know what a rim brake is, if it's a 26 inch wheel? Cheap.
- 24:5426 inch rim brake is a disc brake that's this big around. No, you just put- Okay... your foot in the damn- But you make a good point there. [laughs] You put your, you put your toe in the damn fork. Right. Yeah.
- 25:05And risk the end-o, but- Right. And break your feet. No. Yeah, break your toe. No, no, no. Okay, I do get that. No, no. Okay, from that perspective I get it. Yeah. Okay. I think, okay, so the U- Yeah, do it right...
- 25:15the UCI, those people that run the dang old Tour de France, or I don't know if it's the family that runs the Tour or the actual UCI themselves, are talking about bringing rim brakes back to professional bike racing.
- 25:26[laughs] Ah. Road racing. That'd be fun. I'm like, have you seen how fast they go down hills? I don't think that- Like rim- Well, I don't know. It's a- I don't think that's gonna stop them as well.
- 25:34No, they- I get the idea. Well, they want crashes... I get the idea of the bigger disc- They want crashes... but in practice, no. You have hydraulic rim brakes again. All those Maguras were great back in- Yeah...
- 25:44the day. Oh. Guess what gets the most views? Crashes. Guess what that would get? We don't want that. More crashes. Oh, not when the- No. Hey, if you're the head of a damn thing... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:54I'm just being very- All right, Donnie NASCAR over there... devil's advocate on it. I don't agree, I just- I get it. I get it... s- I understand where their logic lies. I don't agree with it, but I see it.
- 26:07Who put the coffeneering challenge on here? I did. [laughs] I just ran across it and I was like, I didn't really read through it, but it's like- Uh-...
- 26:14something, I don't know, it popped up on a Milwaukee or the MK bi- BK thing. Is it actually a Milwaukee thing? I don't know. I don't know. The, it's Chasing Mailboxes is the website. Always be coffeneering. It's- Yeah.
- 26:27You can yank it off there... two wheels, two feet, books, coffee, go, blah, blah, blah. This person has been- There's a lot of caveats throughout the whole damn thing...
- 26:33well, this person's been documenting life as a pedestrian, bibliophile, bike rider, and person in Washington, DC. Oh, fair enough. Okay. I don't know. I j- just threw it on there. It's a- I wanna help...
- 26:45well, it's- I wanna contribute. It's also the home base for the coffeneering challenge. [laughs] It's a lea- Instead of my- Well, n- n- n-... sunny personality... no, I think, I, you- Goddamnit...
- 26:52but you're onto, you're onto something here. Hey. Uh, it's a leisurely fall affair consisting of bike rides to coffee. Yes. You should try it.
- 26:59A little bit of that and a little bit of that, but look, it's like seven more pages of, on that site. Well, to be- And it goes and goes and goes and goes... yeah, it is. Between- So I couldn't really...
- 27:06October- I was like... 10th and November 25th, ride your bike eight times, try seven different places. Well, we'll, we'll, we'll- At least two miles... catch up with you in about- Rah, blah, blah, blah...
- 27:1310 minutes when- Drink... you're done- Drink- 'Cause I did the same thing. I was like, I'm like, th- this is never ending... drink eight total cups of coffee. In a day? Oh. Per, per ride. I don't know. Or- No...
- 27:23in, or, or in the entire time between. [laughs] The entire time. October 10th. Yeah. Yeah. By the way, I, oh man. I r- I reserve- I had, I had my first Turkish coffee in twen- b- b- b- b- b- b- 30 years, 35 years.
- 27:38And you're still alive? Oh, man. That shit kills you. Well, yeah, it would. I mean, I remember having the first one, and it was like, I was awake for a day and a half. [clears throat] Zing. So I was- Yeah...
- 27:50skeptical, but I did it anyways just out of nostalgia. Nice. And it worked out, 'cause, and it was funny, 'cause [laughs] the, the guy at the, uh,
- 27:59at the coffee shop was like, he's like, "You know, I'm going to have myself a Turkish coffee." [laughs] "I have not had one for a while. M- us Middle Easterns, we're crazy. We're crazy.
- 28:09We'll drink this coffee at all times. I have figured it out finally. I can't have one past 3:00 in the afternoon." And [laughs] it was like- Yeah, right... it was great.
- 28:18We had a, like, a really- That's, my caffeine cutoff is noon usually. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Oh, for sure. For sure. And this one, man, it does, it, it ramps you up like right out- [laughs] Drink twice, like, no...
- 28:27r- r- right out of the gate, man. Right before bed. I don't care. No, th- no- I'm not quite that bad, but I- No, no, no... definitely go to 5:00. This, this would test that. This would test that.
- 28:36I don't drink like that anymore, though. I drink straight black coffee that's not Turkish. It, wait a second.
- 28:41All this is- When you have, when you have to say straight black- All this is, this is just damn coffee, but it's just ground- I'm not drinking glay- gay black coffee. Why would you say that?
- 28:49As- Because coffee is, doesn't have m- milk in it, it doesn't have... Stop it. Well, if you're a real person, it doesn't have- Black-... milk and shit in it. [laughs] This is it. Okay. It's black- It's black...
- 28:57it's black coffee ground finer- I way finer... than espresso. Yeah. So it's not filtered, so it's sediment on the bottom. It's really close to tar. So you can't slam it. W- well, you don't drink the tar.
- 29:09It's like, it's like a- You drink the liquid... it's like a French press without the press. Pretty much. Wow. Yeah. It's, it's, like you have to have- Yeah... a grinder to make that, like- Yeah... it's potent.
- 29:19And it's like, it's, it's like y- co- uh, coffee bean and cardamom. I'm, I'm just- And whatever, it's got a little spice.
- 29:25And then, and you know, they ask you if you want some sugar or something like that just to cut the- Don't bastardize my coffee... in, well, it's, it's, it's bitter. [laughs] It is bitter. It's really bitter. Yeah.
- 29:34You'll, you kinda need the coffee just to approach it in a way. Speaking of- I don't know. It was really goddamn good. Speaking of the- Sorry about the, uh-...
- 29:41IB- IBUs, I don't even see on the can what I- No, it's Leinenkugel's... IB, IBUs. Yeah, they aren't gonna put that on there. Uh, we got our- And, oh, and the Leinenkugel plant downtown is no more. Huh.
- 29:51I actually got to tour it and have a drink in the boardroom. They had seven employees at the time. Yeah. Wow. 'Cause it was automated. One of the first automated ones. I got our Senseo coffee maker working again. Mm.
- 30:07Do you remember those back- Mm-hmm... from, I don't know, 15 years ago? It was, it's like a single serving thing, but it doesn't have a stupid plastic K-Cup. Yep. And it's way better than Keurig.
- 30:20Uh, 'cause it pressu- Oh, it's got the, the f- like your own fillable... it pressure. Yeah, it, it pressurizes it. You can make your own or you can buy pre-made pods- Right... which have the filter in them.
- 30:31Um, but it pressurizes the shit out of it, so you get the nice crema on the top. [sniffs] And I- Well, I ever hear you say crema again- The foam, dude... crema. Foam, dude. Foam. It's got some foam. Foam, dude.
- 30:44[laughs] And because it has- Crema... if you make a, if you make... Well, it doesn't matter Is it cream freeze? So what it has is it has two [laughs] little things where the coffee comes out of. Yeah.
- 30:55So it makes a nice little figure eight pattern in your crema. You know what's going on? Freeze. So nice. Michael, you know what's going on? [laughs] It's all downhill from here. Yeah.
- 31:04It's all downhill from here, which also occurred, Fright Fest, El Rongo. Oh, okay. That worked out, and then I had to run away to Beach Street to see which we intend to- All of them... cause mayhem or havoc. That was it.
- 31:21Hmm. I've heard on the MSE- Which was fun, but then they're, like, trying to back it up. We, you know, we... It, it, it started out as havoc. We wanna say happiness or- Oh, yeah... harmony- Happiness... or whatever.
- 31:34And [laughs] Wizard Kevin and a friend of his right next to us. [laughs] Other guy's like, "Havoc. Havoc. We don't want happiness. We want havoc." [laughs] It was the best. [laughs] Right on.
- 31:49Uh, I'm gonna mention this, and then we're probably gonna get out of here. Uh, if you are into the fat bike thing, we got the- Pretty close... we got our community, The Fat Bike Lab. You can check that out.
- 32:00It's a bunch of people talking about fat bike stuff, where you don't have to be on Facebook or some other junky platform that's stealing all your data. Well, it, it is, uh, on our website right under the Community tab.
- 32:15I've been there. Been to people's, people's been, been conversing and stuff on there. It's kinda nice. And I would expect that coming into the season there will be more people conversing.
- 32:29It's been a lot of British and UK-type folk- So-... over the summer... young lady reaching out to you're friends with her and I'm friends with her from, uh, California. A who?
- 32:39And the lady sent me a couple messages about winter riding. Oh, cool. Fun. I do not know that I have seen and/or heard such a thing. This last three weeks has been kinda crazy, so I don't even know what's going on.
- 32:51It's crazy. I do, I do know this. We only got two weeks till we do this next time. I'm, I'm gonna try and make some progress in here. But what we ha- There's a fat bike frame right there for sale. See it? See it? See it?
- 33:00It's orange, unless I decide to give it to Steven. Stefan? Yeah. He, I need a bathroom. He needs a fat bike. [laughs] These seem like trades worth making. [laughs] We do have the tweetables- Tweetable... riding this-
- 33:18Oh, yeah... the tweetables this weekend. Yeah. Yeah, we kinda mentioned- Bike-toberfest? Bike-toberfest? I was gonna- Tweetables are, uh, potentially frost in the morning. Yeah. Perfect tweed weather.
- 33:28This is- And Bike-toberfest, launching out of Blackbird. [clicks tongue] That sounds, that's- See y'all on that one... potential. That's a good one. That's always a fun ride. Yeah. It's a, it's a billionaire ride.
- 33:39Always. It's one of... It's my favorite ride. Hands down my group ride. No mushrooms till sunrise. No doubt, dude. Uh-uh. [laughs] I don't know what you're talking about here. Ah.
- 33:48Don't need to be in the spirit world on that one. Well, we'll see. And speaking of the spirit world, there is that radio, Riverwest Radio ghost ride. Ah, we... Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, is it a ghost ride? I didn't know that.
- 33:58I, I don't know whether... Yeah, it's a ghost walk and/or ride. Yeah. Okay. I mean, that's intriguing. It's in the show notes and whatever. Yeah. And rest in peace, Yelvin. He had a show on there. Hmm. And- Right on...
- 34:09just passed away just the other day ago... on the WMSU radio station. And at Riverwest Radio, Mel's Musical Memories. Oh, he was on Riverwest Radio. Yeah. That was his regular as of late. [clicks tongue] Oh, yeah.
- 34:20So- We had another alum, who I think is still on. Uh, we did a music video thing here with, uh, Fates of Death and- Oh, yeah... and, and Sean Fitzpatrick, who Mark Borchardt was camera guy for. Yeah.
- 34:33And he has the show on the thing about the movies and whatnot. Yes, yes, he does. Quite knowledgeable of the movies, this guy. He, he is. He is. I've met that man many times. Yeah. All right.
- 34:42But I unfortunately had to live next to Sean. [laughs] [laughs] Actually, it was a fun time. Uh, to be fair, he wasn't as manic as he can be during a shoot. Oh, yeah. So that was great. He's a fun guy. Hi, Kobe.
- 34:53Hi, Kobe. Hi, Kobe. Peace, Kobe.
- 34:56[upbeat music]
