- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Brady Randall.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Well, we're continuing to look at the life of Joseph through the lens of Genesis 37.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And today we're going to look at the dream that Joseph had.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: When I was in high school, my favorite musical that I got to be a part of was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Code.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And I think it was probably my favorite musical because the main character had an awesome voice.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Because the music, the songs, and these dreams.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And the lyrics went something like this: imagine how annoying this would be to hear.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I look handsome, I look smart, I'm a walking work of art.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Such a dazzling coat of many colors, how I love my coat of many colors.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, can you imagine that?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't you like to just smack someone upside the head who was singing that to you?
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: But here we read of two dreams that Joseph had, which end up coming true, much to the dismay of those around him.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And we read this in Genesis 37, verses 5 to 10.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: He said to him, Listen to this dream that I had.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Listen, he said, I had another dream, and this time the sun and the moon and the eleven stars were bowing down to me.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: When he told his father, as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, What is this dream you had?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Now can you imagine being told a dream like this?
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, dreams are crazy.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: It's amazing the things that we dream up.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know where they come from.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: But this is not what you want to hear.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And the dreams in Genesis generally come from God Himself, as seen in chapter 20, 28, 31, 40, 41, among others.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: But no real interpretation is needed for this dream.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: So in the first dream, a sheaf of grain stood upright, and the other sheaves bowed down to him.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And in the second dream, the sun, the moon, the eleven stars bowed down to Joseph.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And at hearing this, Joseph's father rebuked him.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Like, you really think we're all going to just bow down to you, really?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: But rather than dismissing it, his father kept the matter in mind.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: But the brothers, of course, they didn't want to have anything to do with it.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Why would they think they would have to bow down to him of all people?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: The father's favorite son.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: This only annoyed them and incited them further, making them want to kill him.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And this got me thinking: what do you do with news or dreams or visions from God?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Do you dismiss it?
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Do you take it to heart?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Do you consider it?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Which is what Joseph's dad ends up doing.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And I don't have time to go into all the ways that God has spoken throughout the scriptures.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Certainly we see in the scriptures God speaking through dreams, visions audibly, through a still small voice.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And generally, dreams obviously occur when people are sleeping, and visions occur while people are awake.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And that's how God spoke to Joseph here through a dream.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: He spoke to Joseph, Mary's husband, Solomon, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Peter, and Paul.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: In fact, the prophet Joel said there would be visions in which Peter said was partially fulfilled in Acts chapter 2.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: And also, if you hear reports on the mission field today, especially overseas and in some Muslim countries, what you read about is people who apparently see Jesus in dreams, especially people without gospel access in the written word of God in the Bible.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: So you may wonder, can God still speak through a dream?
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Today, has God spoken through my dreams?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: On the one hand, who's to tell God what he can and can't do and how he wants to communicate?
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: But at the same time, I would say we may not want to put too much stock and emphasis on a dream itself, because that must be seen in light of scripture, which never contradicts scripture.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: In other words, any word that God gives or has given, God's word never contradicts itself.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: So, in fact, the author of Hebrews he wrote in Hebrews chapter one, in the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by the Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he also made the universe.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: So God has primarily spoken through the person of Jesus Christ as recorded in the scriptures.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: We therefore have the full and complete revelation of God passed down to the apostles, kept for us through the Holy Scriptures, so no dream or vision can have equal weight to what God has already said through the Bible.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So thank God that He has spoken and that He still speaks today.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: The question is, will you and I choose to listen and respond accordingly?
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Thanks for joining us here today.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of great content to explore on Orchard Hill Plus and on the Orchard Hill main feed from the weekend.
