- 0:00In his text On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin outlined
- 0:06the evolution of life forms on Earth.
- 0:08He observed many species and posited that they all developed
- 0:12from a common ancestral past having undergone substantial
- 0:16changes, mutations that supported the success of those
- 0:21forms, and modification that increase the likelihood of
- 0:25survival and reproduction for continuance of the species.
- 0:30This comprehensive overview underpins the theory of
- 0:33evolution. Since that time, substantial
- 0:37research has been done in the field of anthropology, biology,
- 0:42archaeology, genetics, etcetera, to validate the evolution of
- 0:47forms. The changes envisioned here have
- 0:50been documented through carbon dating, review of the fossil
- 0:54record, etcetera, to have stretched across literally
- 0:58hundreds of millions, even billions of years.
- 1:03What Darwin documented, however, does not address the source or
- 1:06purpose of our existence. Rather, it addresses the
- 1:10mechanism, the machinery for the development of external forms.
- 1:16Srioro Bindo describes the inner significance and purpose of all
- 1:20of this machinery as he outlines the evolution of consciousness.
- 1:26Sri Aurobindo's view makes it clear that nothing can evolve
- 1:30that has not previously been involved.
- 1:33This corresponds to the evolution of forms to the extent
- 1:36that the external forms develop based on encoded genetic
- 1:41patterns that guide the development of those forms.
- 1:44This is a recognition of the concept of involution preceding
- 1:49evolution. The question then arises as to
- 1:53how the pattern, the encoding comes to take place and whether
- 1:58it has any significance. This brings us to an
- 2:02understanding of the divine manifestation and the secret
- 2:06sense of all of this machinery in the evolution of
- 2:11consciousness. Srioro Bindo describes the
- 2:14pattern as he shows the evolution of life forms of ever
- 2:17higher capacity and functionality out of the purely
- 2:22material basis and then the development of mind within a
- 2:27segment of the living forms. Sri Robinda recognizes that the
- 2:31mental being, leader of life and body, cannot possibly be the
- 2:36final term of the evolution as the result is incomplete and
- 2:41filled with numerous weaknesses, limitations and incapacities.
- 2:48He therefore calls man a transitional being and describes
- 2:52next stages in the evolution of consciousness to successively
- 2:56manifest more complete, more comprehensive, and more
- 3:00universal stages or gradations. Higher levels of consciousness
- 3:05above the mental grade have powers and capacities far beyond
- 3:10the mental, just as the mind has powers and capacities beyond the
- 3:15vital, and the vital has powers beyond the expressed
- 3:18consciousness at the material level.
- 3:23This evolution of consciousness is easily seen at the macro
- 3:26level on the global scale, but in and of itself it does not
- 3:30provide significance for the individual as opposed to the
- 3:34species as a whole. Human beings, however, with
- 3:39self-awareness and the formation of individuality, reject the
- 3:43idea of the collective. Human species is the sole
- 3:48carrier of purpose. They expect that the individual
- 3:52also has a specific role, purpose and significance.
- 3:58Within the relatively short human lifetime, there seems to
- 4:01be no solution. It is only when the concept of
- 4:05rebirth and the evolution of the psychic being as the carrier of
- 4:09the growth and maturity of the soul come into play that a
- 4:13deeper sense to our existence can be recognized, Sri Orbanda
- 4:18writes quote. The soul, representative of the
- 4:23central being, is a spark of the divine supporting all individual
- 4:28existence in nature. The psychic being is a conscious
- 4:33form of that soul growing in the evolution, in the persistent
- 4:37process that develops first life in matter, mind in life, until
- 4:42finally mind can develop into over mind and over mind into the
- 4:48Super mental truth. The soul supports the nature in
- 4:52its evolution through these grades, but is itself not any of
- 4:57these things. End Quote reference Srioro Bindu
