Transcript
- 0:00So we're going to begin with some overview, and there's some
- 0:03chapters in the Book of Mormon that we'll need to go back to.
- 0:07So we're going to do a little bit of rewind, we'll do some
- 0:09fast forwarding, and then we'll come back actually into second
- 0:12Nephi. So let's begin with the. 1st.
- 0:15Nephi 19. So it's interesting that it's
- 0:18Nephi who who gives us more Isaiah chapters than any any
- 0:22other prophet in the Book of Mormon.
- 0:23He is coming out of Jerusalem in 600 BC.
- 0:28Well, Isaiah was a prophet in the Kingdom of Judah from
- 0:32Nephi's hometown. He was a a court prophet.
- 0:36He he lived with the kings. He prophesied with the the
- 0:39people in the the King's court here from about 7:40 to 7:00 O1
- 0:46BC. So it's not that far in the past
- 0:49for Nephi and Jacob. It's like a. 100 years, yeah.
- 0:52And so this is kind of his, his hero as far as scripture writing
- 0:57is concerned. So he he loves Isaiah and he's
- 0:59going to use him more than anybody.
- 1:01In fact it's it's interesting if you go back to first Nephi 1923,
- 1:05Nephi tells us that he was reading scriptures to his
- 1:09brothers. He says I did read unto them
- 1:12that which was written by the books of Moses basically.
- 1:15So Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
- 1:19Well, we know from first Nephi that he's been focusing a lot on
- 1:22Exodus and Exodus isn't that hard to understand compared to
- 1:27other books in Scripture. But you can picture Nephi
- 1:30reading to his brothers out of the books of Moses and saying
- 1:33you're not making the connection.
- 1:35Are you and Laman looking at Lemuel saying it?
- 1:38You getting it? No, I'm not getting no, we're
- 1:40not getting it. They didn't do their homework.
- 1:41And Nephi says, OK, now look at the interesting transition in in
- 1:45chapter 19, verse 23 when he says, but that I might more
- 1:49fully persuade them to believe in the Lord, their Redeemer.
- 1:55I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet
- 1:57Isaiah. For I did like in all scriptures
- 2:00unto us that it might be for our prophet and our learning.
- 2:03So they're not fully connecting the dots with with Moses's
- 2:07writings. So he says.
- 2:09Let me make this more obvious. Let's turn over to Isaiah.
- 2:12Most people today wouldn't turn to Isaiah to make something more
- 2:15obvious, but Nephi does because it's very obvious to him.
- 2:18And we hope that it'll become more obvious to you as we look
- 2:22at what the Book of Mormon has said about Isaiah and that it'll
- 2:25invite you to see, oh, I see Jesus.
- 2:28I see my Savior and my Redeemer revealed in the words of Isaiah.
- 2:32So the other place to to look is if you flip over to 3rd Nephi
- 2:37chapter 23. This is a chapter where Jesus is
- 2:42among the Nephites and the Lamanites in the Americas.
- 2:44It's on his second day of of his ministry here in the Americas,
- 2:50and he just got through quoting to them Isaiah 54, which is one
- 2:55of the sweetest chapters of the entire scriptural Canon about
- 3:00God's mercy and his grace, and coming back to fulfill the
- 3:03covenant in spite of our unworthiness, he just finishes
- 3:08with quoting that that beautiful chapter all about himself.
- 3:12And then in chapter 23 he opens it by saying.
- 3:15And now behold, I say unto you, that ye ought to search these
- 3:19things. Yeah, a commandment I give unto
- 3:22you that you search these things diligently.
- 3:23For great are the words of Isaiah.
- 3:26You'll notice that he didn't say, I command you to read
- 3:29Isaiah. He said, a commandment I give
- 3:31unto you to search these things diligently.
- 3:35You can't just read Isaiah. You have to search him
- 3:38diligently. It takes great effort.
- 3:40And that's our goal today is to make it so that when you come to
- 3:43an Isaiah chapter in the future, you don't say, man, I'm gonna
- 3:49either skip it or just gloss over it so I can say I read it,
- 3:53but to help you actually search it diligently so you can fulfill
- 3:57A commandment from the Lord. It's a really interesting word.
- 4:00We work at the university, and one of the main things we try to
- 4:04help our learners do is learn how to be better learners.
- 4:08And sometimes as learners we have bad habits.
- 4:11We want the easy way out. Like, I'm gonna just read
- 4:14something kind of quickly and not really have my brain on, but
- 4:17I'll just kind of let my eyes wander across the page and I'll
- 4:20call it good. Or maybe I'll watch a video and
- 4:25call it good. That's done.
- 4:26And searching actually requires quite a bit of effort.
- 4:30I mean, you think about search and rescue.
- 4:32It's not read and rescue, right? You're out there trudging
- 4:36through the hills and you're working with other people and
- 4:39you're collaborating and and it's it's effort and you're
- 4:42sweating a bit. It's not always necessarily fun,
- 4:44but the payoff is incredible. And we have to spend some time
- 4:48with our students, helping them improve their searching skills,
- 4:52their study skills, their learning skills.
- 4:54So one thing for us to remember in order to be able to fulfill
- 4:57this commandment from the Lord is recognizing that pattern that
- 5:01we've talked about before, where the prophets in the Book of
- 5:04Mormon will always introduce something to do with the chapter
- 5:09that they're going to quote. So before giving you Isaiah
- 5:13chapter or chapters, they're going to give you some
- 5:16introduction, then they're going to give you the commentary.
- 5:21It's fascinating with the largest Isaiah block in the
- 5:25entire Book of Mormon being the one here in second Nephi that
- 5:27everybody talks about famously, which is chapter 12 through 24.
- 5:33It it's really important that we see that Nephi opens this up by
- 5:37saying, look, I had Jacob, my brother, give you some chapters
- 5:42from Isaiah because Isaiah has seen the Lord like I have seen
- 5:48him and Jacob my brother has seen the Lord.
- 5:52So his introduction is I'm going to read you more of Isaiah
- 5:56because Isaiah is an eyewitness of God, which we're going to get
- 6:00in chapter 16 and I'm an eyewitness of God and Jacob.
- 6:04My brother's an eyewitness of God.
- 6:05We have 3 witnesses that Jesus is the Christ in this case
- 6:10because Nephi is going to give you his name.
- 6:12Jesus Christ in chapter 25 that Jacob gave you his name.
- 6:17Christ his title. Christ in chapter 10.
- 6:20First time in the book of Warm where you got Christ was from
- 6:22Jacob after reading Isaiah. Full name and title is chapter
- 6:2825. After Nephi reads you this big
- 6:31chunk, I think these two brothers have a message for us.
- 6:35I think they're serious about the fact.
- 6:36If you want to understand the Lord, your Redeemer better, then
- 6:40dive into Isaiah, because you're going to see Him and you're
- 6:43going to recognize him more fully among all the other things
- 6:46that Isaiah is prophesying. You're going to come to know
- 6:49your savior, and you're going to know not just His name, but your
- 6:54covenant connection to Him better.
- 6:56So that that helps us as we dive in and.
- 6:58Let me just share briefly. Names matter and it's
- 7:02interesting how Nephi when he talks about Jesus early on, he
- 7:06usually uses the phrase the Lamb of God or the Messiah.
- 7:11These are very Hebrew things to say the word Messiah.
- 7:14It means the anointed one. And it's interesting that when
- 7:17he starts to use the word Jesus Christ, those are Greek words
- 7:20and they actually had to be revealed.
- 7:22That's right. To Nephi, he would not have
- 7:24known Greek and so they're revealed to him and the word
- 7:26Jesus Christ. Christ is the Greek version of
- 7:29the word Messiah, and Jesus comes from the Hebrew word
- 7:32Joshua, which means savior. In fact, Isaiah's name is a
- 7:37variant of the word. Joshua Jehovah Saved or.
- 7:40Jesus and it literally means Jehovah saved.
- 7:42So it just all comes together that all these names are
- 7:45witnessing about what Jesus does for us.
- 7:48OK, now a couple of other really simple yet important
- 7:53foundational principles to help you as you dive into your study
- 7:57of of the Isaiah chapters. We live in a world that is
- 8:03dominated by a Greek mindset. These ancient Greeks, they they
- 8:10speak very literally. They see the world in a literal
- 8:14way. The Hebrews, especially Hebrew
- 8:17poets like Isaiah, is a Hebrew poet, like Zenith in your Book
- 8:23of Mormon is going to be giving us Hebrew poetry.
- 8:26They speak using symbols. And this is like Lehigh's dream.
- 8:32Lehigh's dream or? Nephi's vision?
- 8:34Very, very symbolic. Which means instead of saying
- 8:39this means this, they simply paint a picture for you and
- 8:43sometimes they'll give you interpretation, but they'll
- 8:45leave it open for layer upon layer upon layer of fulfillment.
- 8:51It's really quite powerful. Let me give you just a simple
- 8:54example from Isaiah. A Greek statement would be if
- 8:59you sinned, you can repent and be forgiven.
- 9:03Just say it. I just said it.
- 9:05That's the reality. A Hebrew poet would never say it
- 9:09that way. A Hebrew poet would say
- 9:11something like come now and let us reason together, saith the
- 9:13Lord. Though your sins be as scarlet,
- 9:17they shall be as white as snow, though they be red like Crimson,
- 9:22they shall be as wool. It's not just using symbols, but
- 9:25it's symbolic repetition. You say something with symbols
- 9:29and then you say it again with symbols, and it creates this
- 9:33almost like you have two eyes now.
- 9:35It gives a depth to what they tried to teach you, but you can
- 9:39keep learning lessons from that for the rest of your life.
- 9:42It's kind of like people going to the temple of our God today
- 9:46and putting on only Greek lenses and looking at everything that
- 9:49takes place in an endowment or an initiatory setting or a
- 9:52ceiling setting or in a sacrament meeting with only
- 9:56literal lenses. And sometimes you walk out
- 9:58going, well, that was weird. When in reality God is teaching
- 10:02us layered lessons over time, things that are waiting to be
- 10:07uncovered and revealed as we get the symbolic eyes to see
- 10:12unlearned lessons. That is what happens with the
- 10:15Book of Mormon and its use of Isaiah.
- 10:18Or if you read Isaiah just straight out in the in the Bible
- 10:21is you can keep learning lessons for the rest of your life at
- 10:24deeper and deeper and deeper levels.
- 10:26And sometimes in our modern world, because of the scientific
- 10:29revolution, this, this Greek worldview, we believe that truth
- 10:33can only be found through literalness and God's like, I'm
- 10:37the God of truth. We can do little truth and we do
- 10:41symbolic truth. And sometimes we get ourselves
- 10:43mixed up is because we don't see things literally and we're like,
- 10:47well, if it's only little, it's true.
- 10:48If it's symbolic, it's not true. And at the university, we have
- 10:51to deal with this and help students see that our role in
- 10:55life is to find and accept all truth.
- 10:58And if we only put ourselves into the Greek literal
- 11:00worldview, we will miss the fullness of truth that God has
- 11:03to offer us. So last item before we actually
- 11:06open up the the scripture block of the Isaiah chapters is to go
- 11:12to the end. So Nephi has just given you
- 11:15chapters 12 through 24. It's really easy to remember in
- 11:19the Book of Mormon because you just subtract 10.
- 11:22So if it's chapter 12 in the Book of Mormon, second Nephi,
- 11:25then it's chapter 2 in Isaiah. So it's chapters 2 through 14 of
- 11:31Isaiah, some of those very, very initial chapters that Nephi is
- 11:34quoting to us. He finishes that.
- 11:36And then in chapter 25 after closing Isaiah, now he says, now
- 11:41let me explain why a lot of people don't understand Isaiah.
- 11:44So we would invite you to pause the video here and turn to 2nd
- 11:48Nephi, chapter 25, verse one through 8, and read it
- 11:55carefully. Study it carefully, and look for
- 11:59keys that Nephi gives you to help unlock meaning and
- 12:02understanding in the in the book of Isaiah and in some cases, why
- 12:06he tells us the reasons people don't understand Isaiah.
- 12:10We hope that you found a whole series of things that that Nephi
- 12:16is talking about and we're not going to list all of them and
- 12:18they're not going to be in order here, but we're going to just
- 12:21cover a couple of them. Very quickly you'll notice that
- 12:24he said unless you understand the manner of prophesying among
- 12:29the Jews, then you're not going to understand Isaiah because
- 12:33he's a Hebrew poet and and he is a seer.
- 12:37And what is a seer? He's a seer.
- 12:42He he sees things past, present, future, he reveals things.
- 12:46You've got some great insights on the word prophet and what
- 12:48kind of revelation. This is really interesting.
- 12:51We often think that prophets only talk about the future, and
- 12:55they do talk about the future always in this covenant, the
- 12:58context of the consequences of keeping or not keeping the
- 13:01covenant. And if we go to Deuteronomy
- 13:03chapter 18, God is speaking through Moses, revealing his
- 13:08will to the people of how he wants them to be covenantly
- 13:10loyal. And he says the people thou
- 13:13shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.
- 13:15Now we think the word perfect means on without sin.
- 13:18It actually means be loyal to God in the covenant, do the
- 13:22things he's asked you to do, And then he goes on And God says,
- 13:26the Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the
- 13:29midst of thee of thy brethren. Like unto me, unto him ye shall
- 13:33hearken. So Moses is not always going to
- 13:35be with the people, but he's kind of the ideal or
- 13:38paradigmatic or exempt exemplary prophet.
- 13:41And God saying, I will raise up other prophets like him.
- 13:45And what do prophets do? They teach God's covenantal
- 13:48words. Isaiah is one of those prophets.
- 13:50And of course the main example is Jesus Christ, who reveals the
- 13:54fullness of God's covenants. When prophets are prophesying,
- 13:58they're always talking about God's covenants and they're not
- 14:01going to come out and say I'm talking about God's covenants,
- 14:04but they will be speaking God's words and what God expects of
- 14:06us. And that's what Isaiah is doing,
- 14:08and that's what Nephi is trying to help us understand.
- 14:11He's helping us to understand the consequences of being in
- 14:15God's covenant or not being in God's covenant, being loyal and
- 14:19faithful to what God had revealed to the people at Mount
- 14:22Sinai or in subsequent revelation.
- 14:24So knowing that, it's really important to see that when you
- 14:28read in Isaiah because he's a seer, he's a prophet, he's a
- 14:32revealer of God's covenant, God's words, God's connection
- 14:36with the people. He's going to be writing about
- 14:39events. Now you can look at the the
- 14:44writings of Isaiah and say, I wonder what he is telling us
- 14:49about his own time period based on Nephi and Jacob and their
- 14:54connection with Christ. I wonder what he's seeing.
- 14:59I wonder what he's seeing from Christ's time period and how
- 15:03Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of a lot of these
- 15:07things that are going on. And I wonder what he's seeing in
- 15:11our day. Because Nephi tells us that in
- 15:16the day, in verse 7:00 and 8:00, in the day that these Isaiah
- 15:19prophecies are going to be culminating and being fulfilled,
- 15:22then the people will understand them and and love Isaiah more.
- 15:26Well, we're living in that day. It doesn't mean that that's the
- 15:29only fulfillment of his writings because he's so good.
- 15:32They find layered fulfillment through time, But finally, in
- 15:37our day, they're going to culminate.
- 15:39Oh, and by the way, just for fun, this won't get you into
- 15:41heaven. But if he's a seer, wouldn't it
- 15:44be nice if he had two eyes? And in our case, we're good and
- 15:50only good pupils will get that joke.
- 15:52You'd also mentioned how his brothers may have struggled,
- 15:55Lamond and Lemuel to fully understand Isaiah because they
- 15:58didn't understand that Isaiah is speaking about these different
- 16:02time periods and the fulfillment of God's covenants.
- 16:05And since we now live in the latter days, we have the
- 16:07advantage because we actually know about Isaiah's day.
- 16:11We have resources on that. We know about Christ Day.
- 16:13That's what the New Testament's about.
- 16:14And we live in the latter days. And so we can see how Isaiah's
- 16:17words apply to us today. And that's ultimately why the
- 16:20Book of Warren was revealed, is to help dress into seeing how
- 16:23prophets have spoken to us so we can be saved in the unfolding
- 16:28embraces of Jesus Christ. Which makes the statement we'd
- 16:32liken all scriptures unto us. It makes sense now.
- 16:37We can say regardless of what Isaiah meant and everybody
- 16:40else's, he's inviting us to liken all of Isaiah's writing to
- 16:44us today in in the latter days, which is beautiful.
- 16:48Another reason that he says that people don't understand Isaiah
- 16:51is because they don't have the spirit of prophecy with them.
- 16:56Or if we have the spirit of prophecy, which is the spirit by
- 16:59which the words were written. If the same spirit that inspired
- 17:03Isaiah to see and write certain things is with us in reading and
- 17:08interpreting them, then we'll be able to see more clearly.
- 17:11But if we don't have the spirit of prophecy, then we can end up
- 17:14in endless debates about what it meant or what it didn't mean.
- 17:17And at the end of the day, because of the layered symbolism
- 17:21and the multiple fulfillments, it it may not be a very fruitful
- 17:25discussion or fruitful debate. Rather another thing that he
- 17:28talks about is Nephi comes out of Jerusalem.
- 17:34He knows all about the geography surrounding the Kingdom of Judah
- 17:38and the kingdoms of Israel and Syria.
- 17:41And his children didn't come out of there.
- 17:44They they they were born in the wilderness and they he hasn't
- 17:47taught them all of that. And so he says they're a little
- 17:49confused about this. So really fast.
- 17:53This will, this will be quick and if you understand just this
- 17:5930,000, actually this 26,000 mile or foot rather overview of
- 18:07geography, it it'll help put a lot of his writings into
- 18:14context. There's the Dead Sea, there's
- 18:16the Jordan River, there's the Sea of Galilee.
- 18:18Here's Nazareth, where Jesus was raised.
- 18:21There are two kingdoms, two major kingdoms in this land.
- 18:26You have the Kingdom of Israel up north with the 10 tribes.
- 18:31You have the Kingdom of Judah down South with the 2 tribes,
- 18:35and of course Levi is scattered among them 'cause he's the only
- 18:38one with priesthood. So they're really 13 tribes
- 18:41because of you from a Manasseh, but there you go.
- 18:43Oh. Bakers doesn't.
- 18:44There you go. Up north you have the Kingdom of
- 18:47Syria. Up to the North East you have
- 18:51the Kingdom of Assyria. To the east, you have the
- 18:57Kingdom of Babylon. To the South and to the West you
- 19:02have the Kingdom of Egypt. This is Isaiah's world.
- 19:07So if he's writing from 7:40 to 7:00 O1 BC, there are major
- 19:14events that we're familiar with in the Old Testament that are
- 19:16current events for him. So for instance Syria is going
- 19:22to combine with Israel which is often referred to in Isaiah as
- 19:26Ephraim because it's kind of the the he's the leader of the group
- 19:31Here Syria becomes confederate with Ephraim in chapter 17 for
- 19:35instance and says let's go fight against the Kingdom of Judah.
- 19:39So that's what chapter 17 and 18 is about is them wanting to come
- 19:44together and the Lord telling Isaiah don't worry they're not
- 19:47going to come and fight you. So when you get to 17 and 18,
- 19:50just know that's what's happening and all of a sudden it
- 19:53makes more sense. You you can start piercing the
- 19:55elements of the story together better.
- 19:57God tells Isaiah, don't worry, they're not going to be able to
- 20:01come because before they do, Assyria is going to come to town
- 20:05and wipe out these two kingdoms. But then Assyria is going to
- 20:09keep coming and is going to besiege Jerusalem after wiping
- 20:14out all of the other cities of Judah.
- 20:16And Assyria comes in 721. You'll notice it's right in the
- 20:21halfway point. Isaiah is living through this,
- 20:23so when you get to chapters 20. 2122 Pay attention to the
- 20:29Assyrian references. And that's the Assyrian
- 20:32conquest. That is where we lose the 10
- 20:35tribes of Israel and they're carried away captive.
- 20:38The 10 Lost Tribes. That all happened right, in
- 20:40Isaiah's time. We don't know where they went.
- 20:42And so pay attention to that in 2021 and 22.
- 20:45Then when you get to chapters 23 and 24, that's Babylon coming to
- 20:51the Kingdom of Judah right after Lehi left, which is for Isaiah
- 20:56more than 100 years in the future when Babylon's gonna come
- 21:00and carry them away captive and then you get the the Jews in
- 21:04exile. So read chapters 23 and 24 from
- 21:09that context. If you understand basic
- 21:12geography in the different kingdoms, all of a sudden it it
- 21:15does open up and unlock some of the history so that you can then
- 21:19understand what happened back then and more easily liken those
- 21:23stories of history to our day today.
- 21:26We were going to talk with you guys about some basic ways of
- 21:30looking and searching in Isaiah and seeing the patterns for how
- 21:34he prophecies. And you were telling me earlier
- 21:37about this kind of multifaceted deep layer that he works
- 21:41through, where he will say something that can actually
- 21:43refer to his day, Christ day, our day.
- 21:47And previous to him. And that's what a seer does.
- 21:50That's what a prophet does. He reveals things from a
- 21:53heavenly perspective. So let's pick it up.
- 21:55Let's let's open up our first Isaiah chapter from from this
- 22:00big chunk, which is chapter 12 in Second Nephi.
- 22:05And a lot of people have already written and said a lot of things
- 22:09about the the mountain of the Lord's house, the temple being
- 22:11established in the top of the mountains.
- 22:13That could find fulfillment in Isaiah's day when the temple is
- 22:20is at the top of the mountain, in Mount Moriah, in Jesus day,
- 22:23in Jerusalem, in Jesus day with Herod's Temple.
- 22:28And it finds ultimate fulfillment with with temples
- 22:31being built in the top of the mountains today in the latter
- 22:33days. So we're just going to kind of
- 22:35gloss over that one. Go to verse 8.
- 22:37Their land is also full of idols.
- 22:40They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own
- 22:43fingers have made. Notice the repetition.
- 22:46He doesn't just say something once, he repeats it.
- 22:48And he's using symbols, land full of idols.
- 22:51They worship the workmanship of their own hands, that which
- 22:53their own fingers have made. Which time period is that just
- 22:56Isaiah's. Is that Jesus's?
- 22:58Is that both? Is that ours?
- 23:01Sounds like the human condition. Sounds like God's like.
- 23:04I created you. I give you all these good
- 23:06things. And you build them up with your
- 23:09own hands and then worship them instead of me.
- 23:10And then you act like you're saving yourselves, and you
- 23:13actually use the means of salvation to hurt people with
- 23:15it. Yeah, turn over to verse 17.
- 23:18The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, haughtiness of men
- 23:21shall be made low, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that
- 23:25day. So there's an ultimate
- 23:27fulfillment of that prophecy in the Millennium.
- 23:30But there are other layered fulfillments of that prophecy.
- 23:34In Isaiah's day, these people were brought down, their idols
- 23:39were literally brought down and abolished, and the Lord alone
- 23:43has resulted in that day. In the time of Jesus, the Roman
- 23:46conquest in 686970 AD, that they are brought down and they are
- 23:54totally destroyed. Now look how he describes this.
- 23:56Instead of just saying it like a Greek, a Greek mindset would
- 24:01prefer, which is, yeah, they're going to be destroyed and all
- 24:04their riches are going to be taken away.
- 24:06Isaiah doesn't do that. He paints A symbolic picture for
- 24:09us. Look at verse 18.
- 24:11The idols he shall utterly abolish and they shall go into
- 24:14the holes of the rocks and into the caves of the earth.
- 24:16For the fear of the Lord shall come upon them and the glory of
- 24:19His Majesty shall smite them. They've been worshipping these
- 24:22idols as gods. Now when the real thing comes to
- 24:25town, they're like, whoa, this this is scary.
- 24:29And he's going to shake terribly the earth.
- 24:31It says, verse 20. And in that day a man shall cast
- 24:34his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which he has made
- 24:37for himself to worship to the moles and to the bats.
- 24:40I don't know about you, but it's way more powerful for me when
- 24:43you slow down and you stop reading and you start searching
- 24:46and you say, what? What message was Isaiah trying
- 24:51to communicate here and why did he use?
- 24:54Why did he pick the symbols that he did to communicate that
- 24:57thought to us as a seer? He picked 2 animals, mole and a
- 25:02bat. What do moles and bats have in
- 25:05common? They're two of the only animals
- 25:07in the whole world who do their there.
- 25:10There are a lot of them, but these are the two major ones who
- 25:12do their work in the dark, who do their work without relying on
- 25:16sight. And if you stop and think about
- 25:19it, what is an idol of gold or an idol of silver to a bat?
- 25:24What does it look to a blind bat?
- 25:26Or to a mole under the ground. It comes across this idol.
- 25:29Does it say I found some gold? I'm.
- 25:31I'm rich. I wow.
- 25:33I'm. Better than all the other.
- 25:34Mod I'm better than every other mole down here.
- 25:37That idol means no more to the bat and the the mole than a
- 25:42polished rock would, or even a non polished rock.
- 25:46Isaiah is sharing a message with us that that which we have set
- 25:51up to be so important to us. Even a mole and a bat who are
- 25:56totally blind can tell us their real worth.
- 26:01Nothing compared to the God of Heaven who holds worlds without
- 26:05number in his hand. So it's a beautiful way if you
- 26:08can get out of the Greek mindset and put on Hebrew symbolism
- 26:12lenses when you're reading in Isaiah and just slow down, ask a
- 26:16lot of questions. Hold up a verse and turn it and
- 26:19say, why did he pick that? Why did he say that?
- 26:21And you're not going to know all the answers because they're
- 26:24waiting to be revealed. Over time.
- 26:26You're going to keep getting them as you get more and more
- 26:28familiar with this manner of prophesying.
- 26:30That's just one little example. Every time I come back to these
- 26:33scriptures, I learn new things. It always, always amazes me that
- 26:36there's always something new to learn.
- 26:38And I know people love to mark their scriptures.
- 26:41Maybe I shouldn't reveal this. I actually like to read a fresh
- 26:45set of scriptures so that I can see new things.
- 26:48If I'm only looking at my insights from five years ago.
- 26:52And then actually like, oh, OK, that's the only thing I can get
- 26:55out of this. So I try to pick up a fresh set
- 26:57of scriptures and see something new.
- 26:59And look at chapter verse 17 again, where Isaiah uses this
- 27:03interesting symbolism and he repeats it twice.
- 27:05He says the loftiness of man, the pride shall be bowed down.
- 27:09The haughtiness of men, the pride shall be made low.
- 27:12OK, so it's said twice and then notice he says, and the Lord
- 27:16alone should be exalted in that day.
- 27:18But Isaiah does not repeat himself.
- 27:20The Lord is so powerful in his exaltation.
- 27:23He is alone in his exaltation, so alone in his exaltation that
- 27:28Isaiah doesn't even need to repeat himself a second time,
- 27:32that literally he has to twice talk about the pride of people,
- 27:35but only once. And God is alone in that
- 27:39statement. This is kind of a literary gem
- 27:42that I discovered some time ago. So let's just take another
- 27:45couple of simple examples as we go through.
- 27:48We're not trying to cover every verse.
- 27:49You're going to discover these over time as you as you dig in.
- 27:55Go to chapter 13. Look at verse one, for behold
- 27:58the Lord, the Lord of hosts, Death, take away from Jerusalem
- 28:03and from Judah, the stay and the staff, the whole staff of bread
- 28:09and the whole stay of water. Now you'll notice that there's a
- 28:13very literal interpretation of this in Isaiah's in Isaiah's
- 28:17day, when Assyria comes to town and they they wipe out all the
- 28:24Kingdom of Israel and Syria, and then they start destroying the
- 28:28fenced cities of Judah, and then they come and they besiege
- 28:31Jerusalem. God is allowing this to happen
- 28:35because his people have broken that covenant of I will be your
- 28:38God, you'll be my people and I'll, I'll protect you.
- 28:40Well, they aren't his people. They've been off worshipping
- 28:43these idols. They they don't want him to be
- 28:46their God. So he's allowing this punishment
- 28:49to come upon them. And the whole purpose of a siege
- 28:53is to cut you off from life, giving water and food bread.
- 28:59So you can see the fulfillment in Isaiah's day very clearly in
- 29:02verse one, that God's allowing them to lose their stay and
- 29:06their staff. And you can see that in Jesus's
- 29:09day, as they reject the Messiah and they reject the the
- 29:13Apostles, God allows the Romans to come in and take away and
- 29:16siege Jerusalem again. And that siege is ugly.
- 29:20It's awful. Now here's the point.
- 29:23If all we do is read Isaiah with only a historical lens on,
- 29:28that's helpful, that's good. But there's a better way to do
- 29:31it, which is to read it with understand the historical
- 29:34setting, but also do what Nephi said, which is liken all
- 29:38scriptures unto us. You stop and think about the
- 29:40covenantal connection we have with Jesus and with with God.
- 29:44There's some real significance today that I don't think Isaiah
- 29:48intended back in his day. But Nephi invited us to liken
- 29:52it. So we're going to liken it,
- 29:53which is don't do things so that you get cut off from the bread
- 29:59and the water. The stay in the staff of life in
- 30:03a covenantal relationship with God is every week like food, you
- 30:09and water. You have to keep getting it.
- 30:11So you go every week to the sacrament table to re establish
- 30:15and make that new covenant and restore that covenant with God.
- 30:18I want you to be my God. We'll be your people.
- 30:21We partake of the bread and the water.
- 30:23When does that get removed from somebody?
- 30:26Only when they've seriously transgressed that covenant to
- 30:30the point where a priesthood leader will say, let's hold off
- 30:34on the bread and water while we work to reestablish some
- 30:38understanding here of what it means to be in a covenant with
- 30:42Christ and with God. It's important here that we
- 30:46recognize we're in a covenantal community.
- 30:48We are saved individually, but in the context of families and
- 30:54communities. And what God has asked us is to
- 30:56come join with that community every week and renew that
- 31:00covenant. Remember, we talked about this
- 31:02in the past, that we promise to keep the commandments.
- 31:05The commandments are the covenantal instructions for how
- 31:08we'll be loyal to God and to His people, how we'll love Him and
- 31:12love His children in return. We get the promise of His
- 31:16presence. We get the promise of His
- 31:18prosperity, which is His presence.
- 31:20And back in the time of of Isaiah, we still feel this way.
- 31:23Today the temple was in Jerusalem and the people saw
- 31:28that the temple is the House of the Lord and his presence was
- 31:31with them. And later when they sinned so
- 31:34much against against God, he eventually said, I left, my
- 31:40presence is left and I'm taking you guys out of out of Jerusalem
- 31:43and into captivity into Babylon. And it's a little bit like our
- 31:46modern day. If you sin sufficiently and are
- 31:48not humble enough to repent, God's presence will not be
- 31:52immediately available to you. Now it's there if you turn back
- 31:55and return to Him, But if you continue to sin as the people in
- 32:00the ancient times did, and that's why we have the
- 32:02scriptures is to point out here are the consequences of keeping
- 32:05the commandments or not. We get this presence and His
- 32:08prosperity when we keep the commandments.
- 32:10The opposite is true when we don't.
- 32:12And that message, if you, if you just keep the the covenantal
- 32:16connection with God and these these ordinances and these
- 32:20opportunities to be connecting points with God, as you go
- 32:25through these Isaiah chapters and how Israel is breaking those
- 32:29connections, then these chapters become more clear.
- 32:33So we're not going to take any more time going through verse by
- 32:38verse by verse. That's where you get to dig in
- 32:41and keep that commandment from the Lord and search diligently.
- 32:43These words, the two other things that we want to cover, is
- 32:48our first chapter 16, which is Isaiah's prophetic call when he
- 32:54goes into the temple and he sees.
- 32:57Such a great chapter. He sees God.
- 32:59This is his, what we would call throne.
- 33:02Theophany where he sees God sitting on a throne surrounded
- 33:07with with angels and look in verse 31 cried unto the other
- 33:10and said holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.
- 33:14Those three repeat holies, meaning our God is the holiest.
- 33:19This is superlative. It's supernal.
- 33:21Nobody is holier than our God or more perfect.
- 33:25And here's Isaiah in the presence of all these heavenly
- 33:28beings, with God himself there. And Isaiah doesn't feel like he
- 33:32belongs. And he says, I woe unto me verse
- 33:365. For I am undone because I am a
- 33:38man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of
- 33:41unclean lips. For mine eyes have seen the
- 33:44king, the Lord of hosts, brothers and sisters.
- 33:47This is, this is beautiful When you take even Isaiah's calling
- 33:52and liken it unto us. The idea isn't that you be
- 33:56sinless, that you never mess up, you never make a mistake.
- 34:01The idea is, is you have the promise of a God to be with you
- 34:06constantly, the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 34:07He's a God. He's a member of the Godhead,
- 34:10and it's promised that even though you have unclean lips and
- 34:13you live in a land that is defiled.
- 34:17And we make poor choices sometimes.
- 34:19The beauty of this is God sends one of the angels to go and get
- 34:23a live coal off of the altar, touch Isaiah's lips to purge
- 34:26them, and to cleanse him well. He makes the promise to us every
- 34:32week and even even day by day as we remember him.
- 34:38We can have his spirit to be with us, to keep making it so
- 34:42our confidence can wax stronger and stronger in the presence of
- 34:46God, even though we don't see him like Isaiah is directly
- 34:50seeing him. But that's kind of the message
- 34:52of the covenant path, isn't it? Is to help you prepare so you
- 34:56can walk back to the presence of the Father and not shrink from
- 35:00his presence and say I I I'm not at all comfortable.
- 35:02I don't belong. What I love about this passage
- 35:05is that Isaiah is humble enough to recognize that he needs
- 35:08healing, but he can't do it on his own.
- 35:11It's actually God or God's servant, this Angel who brings
- 35:15the healing power, the atonement to purge, to burn away his sins.
- 35:20And just a brief story, when I was younger, I still want to be
- 35:25in God's presence, but I felt like I can only be in God's
- 35:28presence if I'm perfect. I kind of feel like Isaiah, like
- 35:31I'm unclean. And so there was a whole number
- 35:34of weeks where I did not partake of the sacrament because I'm not
- 35:37perfect. I said I'm not going to partake
- 35:39of the sacrament until I'm perfect.
- 35:41I'm like, I'm not perfect yet, so I'm not going to take the
- 35:43sacrament. I kept trying to save myself and
- 35:46finally I realized I'm kind of a bit of a slow learner.
- 35:50God's like, no, no, no, be humble and I will purge you.
- 35:54I will bring my atonement to you and purge you and I will make
- 35:59you clean. I thought I had to cleanse
- 36:01myself. And just like Isaiah, he
- 36:04acknowledged his woe and his his fallen nature.
- 36:09He let God purge him. And when I finally realized
- 36:12that, I actually found that actually it was hard for me to
- 36:15have a good week when I hadn't partaken the sacrament because
- 36:18it was harder for me to have the Spirit.
- 36:20And so it got harder and harder. Finally I realized, oh, I'm
- 36:23supposed to trust God and let him purge me and for me to
- 36:26communicate to him my covenant, the loyalty.
- 36:29So I partook in the sacrament and I felt this wash of the
- 36:32spirit which empowered me to have a better week.
- 36:35Now, I'm still not perfect, but I'm in that coming up to a
- 36:39relationship with God and I have experience like Isaiah, that
- 36:43purging that can come as we accept atonement.
- 36:46Now to to finish up, we would invite you to to go through each
- 36:51of these chapters 12 through 24 with these Hebrew symbolic
- 36:55layered repetition lenses looking for what is Isaiah
- 37:00seeing in his day, in Christ's day, in our day, in the
- 37:03Millennial day. Allow yourself to slow down and
- 37:06and ponder these things. But in closing we want to to
- 37:10take you to chapter 22. Of all of the chapters in this
- 37:13particular block of scriptures, this is perhaps the the most
- 37:19hope filled and and quite frankly from my perspective the
- 37:23easiest to understand because it it's just pretty straight.
- 37:27It's more Greek almost in nature because it's more
- 37:30straightforward and read verse 12345 and six.
- 37:33It's the shortest of the chapters, and in my opinion it's
- 37:36by far the easiest to understand, and it is extremely
- 37:40hope filled for anyone who's struggling on the covenant path.
- 37:45So Lord, bless you as you fulfill this commandment of the
- 37:49Savior, to search diligently the words of Isaiah.
