- 0:04Speaker 1: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:06Speaker 1: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Happy Friday! Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show once again.
- 0:27Speaker 2: We are happy to have you here. We're going to
- 0:31Speaker 2: air our grievances at the end of the show. It's
- 0:33Speaker 2: been weeks and weeks since we've had an opportunity to
- 0:35Speaker 2: do so together because, let's see, I had PFL shows
- 0:41Speaker 2: on five out of six summer Fridays, and on the
- 0:44Speaker 2: sixth of those, I had a kid in the hospital.
- 0:48Speaker 3: So....
- 0:50Speaker 2: We've been grinding, baby, but it's time to air our
- 0:53Speaker 2: grievances at 1.30 today. Before we get there, Bill Riley
- 0:57Speaker 2: is going to join us. The voice of the Utes
- 0:59Speaker 2: haven't caught up with Bill for the same reasons in
- 1:03Speaker 2: many weeks. Carlos Mauricio Ramirez, who is now with NFL International,
- 1:08Speaker 2: still working MLS on Apple TV, is going to join
- 1:12Speaker 2: us in the noon hour. The Daily Dump, as always,
- 1:15Speaker 2: JT Wistersell is going to come in studio with us,
- 1:18Speaker 2: host of the Locked on Utes podcast, publisher of Ute
- 1:23Speaker 2: Authority on 24-7 sports, is going to hang out and
- 1:26Speaker 2: we talk Utah football six days now from the start
- 1:31Speaker 2: of the 2026 campaign. And, man, don't we all need...
- 1:37Speaker 2: some fresh football to talk about FCS games in action tonight,
- 1:41Speaker 2: week zero games in action this weekend, including tomorrow morning,
- 1:47Speaker 2: TCU North Carolina in what I think is going to
- 1:52Speaker 2: be a nice little intro for the big 12 conference
- 1:56Speaker 2: to the national slate. I think North Carolina is in
- 1:59Speaker 2: a state of disarray for the most part. You know,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you've got GM under investigation and on suspension and Bill Belichick,
- 2:07Speaker 2: who was kind of the hot topic of the day
- 2:09Speaker 2: this time last year has, and this might actually be
- 2:13Speaker 2: an advantage, I suppose, for North Carolina that he's not
- 2:16Speaker 2: being talked about because of his girlfriend nearly as much,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but I'm just not a believer in anything that's going
- 2:22Speaker 2: on there. There are certain coaches who are right for
- 2:25Speaker 2: the pros, certain coaches who are right for college and
- 2:29Speaker 2: don't have a profound crossover ability. Also Last time I checked,
- 2:34Speaker 2: I don't think North Carolina has any Tom Brady's waiting
- 2:38Speaker 2: in the wings. So we'll see what it looks like
- 2:42Speaker 2: in Dublin, Ireland, of all places, Aviva Stadium hosting the
- 2:45Speaker 2: first game of the season featuring a Big 12 team.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Our guy James Peterson is out of the office today,
- 2:55Speaker 2: and we've got... Is it safe to say a rookie
- 2:58Speaker 2: behind the glass? Introduce yourself, young man, to the listeners.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Tell us the story. Why did you decide you wanted
- 3:04Speaker 2: to subject yourself to this misery today?
- 3:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it's pretty, it's probably pretty safe to say I'm,
- 3:10Speaker 4: I'm a rookie, at least to this audience. I've been
- 3:13Speaker 4: working with Ben Crittle over on our, our other station
- 3:16Speaker 4: for the past year or so.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:18Speaker 5: So I have some experience, but.
- 3:19Speaker 4: When it comes to Utah fans, I, I, I'm not
- 3:22Speaker 4: usually on the air for them.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Okay, so the BYU folks might be more familiar with
- 3:28Speaker 2: young Andrew, but for us.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been on a few.
- 3:33Speaker 4: I've been the producer for a few of the women's
- 3:36Speaker 4: basketball games, a men's game here and there, but by
- 3:40Speaker 4: and large, Utah fans haven't heard my voice.
- 3:42Speaker 5: All right.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Okay, well, welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show for the
- 3:46Speaker 2: first time. If I am being mean to you, it's
- 3:49Speaker 2: out of love. That's just the way I, that's my
- 3:53Speaker 2: love language, ridicule, which is not on the normal, like
- 3:57Speaker 2: it's usually quality time, gifts, physical touch, that kind of thing.
- 4:03Speaker 2: The one that they leave out that is important for
- 4:05Speaker 2: me and the people in my circle is harsh ridicule.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Trash talk. Yeah.
- 4:10Speaker 2: A little trash talk.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Not a love language in the official love language book.
- 4:15Speaker 5: But it should be.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It should be.
- 4:16Speaker 5: That's right.
- 4:17Speaker 2: For the sarcastic idiots amongst us. All right. So welcome
- 4:21Speaker 2: Andrew and 877-353-0700. I always want to hear from you
- 4:26Speaker 2: out there listening. I can't wait till we have real
- 4:30Speaker 2: football to talk about again, because the off season storylines
- 4:34Speaker 2: are starting to get tiresome for me. And you'll be
- 4:38Speaker 2: relieved to know that today I am not jumping on air.
- 4:42Speaker 2: and bringing any sec, big 10, big 12 rules against
- 4:46Speaker 2: pro players returning to the college ranks. We talked about
- 4:49Speaker 2: that plenty this week, unless we get a significant change today,
- 4:53Speaker 2: I'll leave that one in the dust. The salt Lake tribune,
- 4:56Speaker 2: our guy, Jason Pataki out from the salt Lake tribune,
- 4:58Speaker 2: who does a really good job. He, he, he, he
- 5:02Speaker 2: came out with an article that's drawing a lot of
- 5:04Speaker 2: reaction today. And it says this, the headline is exclusive
- 5:11Speaker 2: Former Utah football players say they felt pressured to play
- 5:15Speaker 2: through injuries. He was able to get six different players
- 5:21Speaker 2: on record talking about how they felt as though they
- 5:26Speaker 2: were pressured to play when they were less than 100%
- 5:29Speaker 2: healthy and that maybe that pressure led to some negative
- 5:36Speaker 2: outcomes for them. In other news breaking exclusive, Utah football
- 5:47Speaker 2: players felt pressured to play through injuries. Also, sky is blue.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Water is wet. There are seven days in a week.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Gravity exists. I do not want to criticize Jason Batacchio
- 6:03Speaker 2: because I think I understand what he was getting at here.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But anyone who has been around high level athletics in
- 6:12Speaker 2: any form can tell you that there is constant and
- 6:18Speaker 2: serious pressure to perform when you are less than a
- 6:21Speaker 2: hundred percent. I am not going to dispute the fact
- 6:26Speaker 2: that there is a point of diminishing returns on having
- 6:29Speaker 2: your best players play hurt. And that's in football. That's
- 6:33Speaker 2: in basketball. That's in every individual sport that we're talking about.
- 6:38Speaker 2: That's everywhere across the landscape of college athletics, pro athletics,
- 6:42Speaker 2: high school athletics, little league athletics, if your coaches actually care.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Playing hurt, playing less than 100% is a ubiquitous pressure
- 6:56Speaker 2: and reality across the sporting landscape. Jason Batacchia knows this.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Andrew behind the glass knows this. All of you out
- 7:07Speaker 2: there listening, know this. I know this firsthand. This is not,
- 7:13Speaker 2: this is not a story. I'm sorry.
- 7:15Speaker 5: It's not a story.
- 7:17Speaker 2: What this is, and we are not going to do
- 7:19Speaker 2: this Utah fans. All right. We're not going to do
- 7:21Speaker 2: this here on my show on the home of the Utes.
- 7:26Speaker 2: We can do the tongue in cheek thing. We can
- 7:28Speaker 2: do the complaining about Kyle Whittingham thing. The he who
- 7:32Speaker 2: shall not be named. I did that for a couple
- 7:34Speaker 2: of weeks. You can acknowledge the flaws of the previous
- 7:38Speaker 2: regime and you can, you can even feel some relief
- 7:43Speaker 2: that the perpetual off season sagas of, is he going
- 7:46Speaker 2: to stay? Is he going to go? What is the coach?
- 7:49Speaker 2: What is the coaching? succession plan look like? How many
- 7:54Speaker 2: players are committed to play for Kyle Whittingham versus to
- 7:57Speaker 2: play for the university of Utah? We could go through
- 8:00Speaker 2: all that. You can have that. What we are not
- 8:02Speaker 2: going to do, at least not on this show is
- 8:06Speaker 2: we are not going to start revising history and saying, Oh,
- 8:09Speaker 2: you see, remember all the bad stuff that that guy did.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Remember how he did everything wrong. There were plenty of
- 8:15Speaker 2: things that Kyle Whittingham did not handle correctly. Injuries are
- 8:21Speaker 2: on the very, very short list of things that could
- 8:24Speaker 2: have been improved in the way that they were handled.
- 8:26Speaker 2: This article is further Testament to that. I suppose most
- 8:31Speaker 2: of what we're talking about with injuries being handled poorly
- 8:34Speaker 2: centers on the cam rising debacle that spanned two seasons
- 8:39Speaker 2: at the university of Utah. By all means, let's criticize that.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Let's look back on that with anything but fondness. What
- 8:47Speaker 2: we are not going to do on the home of
- 8:49Speaker 2: the youths on this show is we are not going
- 8:52Speaker 2: to say, Oh yeah. And can you believe the way
- 8:54Speaker 2: that they treated van Fillinger? I can't believe this. Look,
- 8:59Speaker 2: I treated van Fillinger wrong on the air. Okay. Because
- 9:03Speaker 2: he came in as this highly touted, all everything, local product.
- 9:09Speaker 2: When you look at him, the eyeball test, nobody passes
- 9:11Speaker 2: the eye test like van does. And then his production
- 9:16Speaker 2: every year would be like hot start, fall off, hot start,
- 9:19Speaker 2: fall off, inconsistent. Look at a little slow off the edge.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Where's the bend. How did he become so stiff?
- 9:27Speaker 3: Right?
- 9:28Speaker 2: I treated him wrong on the air. I was more
- 9:30Speaker 2: critical than most people needed to be because I was
- 9:33Speaker 2: not fully aware of how severe his injury problems were.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I have I have begged forgiveness for that from the
- 9:42Speaker 2: Phil and your family from van himself. I have said, look,
- 9:45Speaker 2: I was wrong to say, to be critical. And in fact,
- 9:48Speaker 2: I have flipped that criticism into admiration for a player
- 9:52Speaker 2: who did, who suffered mostly in silence until this article,
- 9:56Speaker 2: he suffered in silence basically and said, nothing about, Hey,
- 10:02Speaker 2: that sucked, man. I was playing her every single week
- 10:05Speaker 2: and I didn't want to in some situations, but I
- 10:08Speaker 2: did what was best for my team. I admire that. Okay.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That is being a good teammate. That is being the
- 10:17Speaker 2: guy you're supposed to be to fill out the expectation
- 10:21Speaker 2: of your teammates, the guys in your position room, your
- 10:24Speaker 2: position coach, your head coach. Unfortunately, the unfortunate reality of
- 10:32Speaker 2: having an old-school, traditionalist, hard-nosed coach, which all of us,
- 10:37Speaker 2: until about six months ago, eight months ago, we celebrated.
- 10:42Speaker 2: That that was how Kyle Whittingham was, and that's how
- 10:44Speaker 2: Utah football's culture and fabric had been established and rooted.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Everyone was like, oh my gosh, isn't it so refreshing
- 10:53Speaker 2: that you've got this guy who's not like a pop
- 10:56Speaker 2: culture fiend, he's not a social media guy, he's not...
- 10:59Speaker 2: Hollering at interns like his predecessor at Michigan. Aren't we
- 11:03Speaker 2: lucky to have this old school traditionalist guy doesn't even
- 11:06Speaker 2: watch TV, right? The quirks of that personality were appreciated
- 11:12Speaker 2: for the most part up until it all came crashing
- 11:16Speaker 2: to a, to an end. And that's fine.
- 11:19Speaker 6: Right?
- 11:19Speaker 2: You don't have to love the guy anymore. You can
- 11:22Speaker 2: now go back and you can pick through the things
- 11:24Speaker 2: and cherry pick the things you didn't like. And you
- 11:26Speaker 2: can only focus on those if you're a bitter Utah fan.
- 11:30Speaker 2: But what I am not going to do on my
- 11:31Speaker 2: show is that I'm not going to say, Oh yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 2: can you believe this? I had coached in college football,
- 11:37Speaker 2: wanted his scholarship players, his highly recruited players, his well-compensated players.
- 11:43Speaker 2: He wanted them To come back from injury three weeks early?
- 11:47Speaker 2: He wanted them to be on the field competing? How
- 11:50Speaker 2: dare he? Knock it off. We're not doing that. Okay?
- 11:57Speaker 2: It's not the correct stance to have as a fan.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And don't give me your, well, I'm just concerned about
- 12:03Speaker 2: player safety. No, you're not. You're not. Don't pretend that
- 12:08Speaker 2: you are. You're mad that he's gone. And now you
- 12:13Speaker 2: want to go back and cherry pick the things that
- 12:15Speaker 2: were unlikable about him or about his regime, or you
- 12:19Speaker 2: want to favorably compare your new guy because you're not
- 12:23Speaker 2: a hundred percent sure that the new guy's actually going
- 12:26Speaker 2: to be better. So let's cling to the things that
- 12:27Speaker 2: we think are better. And I'm happy that there's improvements here.
- 12:32Speaker 2: At least as far as we could tell Morgan Scali,
- 12:35Speaker 2: the players they've talked about They've talked about altering the
- 12:40Speaker 2: practices and making sure that people's bodies and Devin damp
- 12:44Speaker 2: here joined us on the show yesterday. We did another
- 12:46Speaker 2: half hour with death. Dev is looser and happier now
- 12:50Speaker 2: than he was this time a year ago. Is that
- 12:52Speaker 2: because of Morgan Scali and he's in the way he
- 12:55Speaker 2: compares favorably to Kyle Whittingham? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Is it just because the quarterback is now a little
- 13:04Speaker 2: bit more firmly established? Is it because his body is healthier?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Probably all of those things. But at the end of
- 13:11Speaker 2: the day, what we're doing is we're saying, see, this
- 13:15Speaker 2: is how Morgan Scali is better because he's taking care
- 13:18Speaker 2: of the guy's health better.
- 13:21Speaker 6: Maybe.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I hope you're right. I hope this article is right.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I hope the players are right. I hope Morgan is right.
- 13:27Speaker 2: But we don't actually know yet. All right?
- 13:30Speaker 5: All right.
- 13:34Speaker 2: You cannot be part of a fan base who becomes
- 13:38Speaker 2: petulant and ungrateful for something, something that was great for
- 13:45Speaker 2: 21 years or for, you know, 16 of those 21
- 13:48Speaker 2: years was something you could be really, really proud of.
- 13:53Speaker 2: And then because of how it ended and because you
- 13:55Speaker 2: feel jilted or you feel like the kid that got
- 13:58Speaker 2: left behind in the divorce is that you say, oh yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 5: And look at this.
- 14:03Speaker 2: There were six guys in this article.
- 14:06Speaker 5: All right.
- 14:07Speaker 2: And aside from Jalen Glover and van Fillinger, the guys
- 14:12Speaker 2: that they talked to were mostly guys who are, dare
- 14:14Speaker 2: I say it disappointing players. If you had talked to
- 14:20Speaker 2: me about Kyle Whittingham three or four years after I
- 14:24Speaker 2: transferred out of the Utah football program, Three or four
- 14:29Speaker 2: years after I was basically cut in not so many
- 14:33Speaker 2: words because I cut myself, but it was because I
- 14:39Speaker 2: wasn't going to get on the field.
- 14:41Speaker 5: I was not going to see anything that resembled action.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I wasn't good enough. They had determined that I had
- 14:48Speaker 2: refused to accept that about myself. But if I'm being honest,
- 14:51Speaker 2: I started to internalize that a little bit also. If
- 14:55Speaker 2: you had asked me two or three or four years
- 14:57Speaker 2: after I walked away from the program, hey, what's Kyle
- 15:01Speaker 2: Whittingham like as a head coach? It would have looked
- 15:04Speaker 2: a lot like this. It would have looked a lot like, oh, man,
- 15:08Speaker 2: I can't believe what a jerk he was. I can't
- 15:10Speaker 2: believe how he just overlooked every good thing I did.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I can't believe that he didn't think I was better.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I can't believe that he gave this guy and this
- 15:19Speaker 2: guy and this guy and this guy scholarships, even though
- 15:21Speaker 2: I was better than them. And I'm 43 years old almost,
- 15:26Speaker 2: and I still believe some of those things that I
- 15:29Speaker 2: just gave you as examples, but I'm more mature. And
- 15:31Speaker 2: by the way, this maturity happened a decade plus ago
- 15:35Speaker 2: for me in realizing that at that time, when I
- 15:39Speaker 2: walked away from the program and when I had these
- 15:41Speaker 2: bad feelings and when I was disgruntled like the players
- 15:43Speaker 2: in this article, I was fresh off of disappointment of
- 15:50Speaker 2: my own. And I wanted to point a finger and
- 15:53Speaker 2: say that was because of somebody else. And look, Van
- 15:57Speaker 2: Fillinger probably has a case. All right? Everything I know
- 16:02Speaker 2: about Tevita Fotu is that he has no case at
- 16:07Speaker 2: all to complain about what he was or was not
- 16:09Speaker 2: in a Utah football uniform. And there are guys that
- 16:13Speaker 2: played on the team with him that could correct me
- 16:14Speaker 2: or tell me I'm wrong or whatever that know a
- 16:17Speaker 2: hell of a lot more than I ever will about
- 16:18Speaker 2: that individual situation. But that's not the person I want
- 16:22Speaker 2: to hear from about the legacy of a coach. That
- 16:25Speaker 2: is a hall of fame, talent, hall of fame, legacy,
- 16:29Speaker 2: hall of fame, contributor to the university of Utah. And
- 16:35Speaker 2: that whole like bridge is being burnt over and over
- 16:38Speaker 2: and over again and crumbling. You're not going to get
- 16:40Speaker 2: a statue until the man is dead. If you ever
- 16:42Speaker 2: get one because of the fact that, you know, he's
- 16:47Speaker 2: a spiteful, petty individual on the way out the door,
- 16:51Speaker 2: the people that are left behind, including a huge portion
- 16:54Speaker 2: of the fan base are feeling that spite and feeling
- 16:56Speaker 2: that pettiness themselves. And the exit is unceremonious and ugly
- 17:02Speaker 2: instead of being what I hoped it would be, what
- 17:04Speaker 2: you hoped it would be. A ride off into the sunset.
- 17:10Speaker 2: This is a beautiful thing. We are less than a
- 17:13Speaker 2: week away from the season kicking off. Jason Batacchia, I
- 17:17Speaker 2: love you, dog. This is not the time. Yeah.
- 17:24Speaker 4: I'm wondering here, because I come from obviously a different perspective.
- 17:28Speaker 4: It seems to me like this is one of those–
- 17:31Speaker 4: you could compare it to what was a long-term relationship
- 17:34Speaker 4: that was really, really good for the most part, and
- 17:37Speaker 4: then you broke up at the end, and you're going
- 17:39Speaker 4: through the stages of grief and denial and anger. It
- 17:44Speaker 4: seems like the fan base and the university, they're not
- 17:47Speaker 4: to acceptance yet, and it seems like maybe there's a
- 17:51Speaker 4: little bit of taking advantage of that and writing these
- 17:54Speaker 4: articles and seeing if you can get a little bit
- 17:57Speaker 4: of– You can benefit a little bit from that.
- 18:00Speaker 5: That's a great point, Andrew.
- 18:02Speaker 2: What we're getting here is we're getting anger clicks.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And this is also a thing we don't like about him.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Not only did he leave us and he'd take coaches
- 18:12Speaker 7: and players with him and he got paid $ 13 million
- 18:15Speaker 7: from the university that he should have given back. And
- 18:18Speaker 7: his brother, his brother that he took with him, we
- 18:22Speaker 7: had to sue him to get money.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Not only that, but look what he did to Van. Look,
- 18:32Speaker 2: I'm not telling you Kyle Whittingham is any kind of angel,
- 18:35Speaker 2: or I'm not telling you that Kyle Whittingham is a
- 18:37Speaker 2: perfect coach by any stretch of the imagination, but he's
- 18:41Speaker 2: better than any other option you had the last 21 years.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Beyond the shadow of a doubt, that is factual. Perhaps
- 18:52Speaker 2: if you got lucky and the timing worked out, you
- 18:55Speaker 2: could have had Kalani Satake at the University of Utah instead. Yeah, but.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Is Utah in the position they are now? I've had
- 19:02Speaker 4: a front row seat to Kalani Satake and his growth,
- 19:06Speaker 4: and he is exactly what BYU needs right now, and
- 19:08Speaker 4: he's a very good coach, and he would do very
- 19:10Speaker 4: well at the University of Utah. I don't know that
- 19:12Speaker 4: he would have done as well as Kyle Whittingham did
- 19:14Speaker 4: at the time Kyle Whittingham was here.
- 19:16Speaker 2: None of us will ever know that. I think Kalani
- 19:19Speaker 2: is a wonderful coach. I think he's a great person.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I'm jealous that BYU has a coach like that, except
- 19:25Speaker 2: we have a coach like that at the university of
- 19:27Speaker 2: Utah also. So jealous is the wrong word for it.
- 19:31Speaker 2: What I'm jealous of is the fact that Kalani Satake,
- 19:34Speaker 2: who is a great coach and a great person now
- 19:36Speaker 2: has resources that magically coincide with him having what 23
- 19:41Speaker 2: wins in the last two seasons. The fact that Those
- 19:45Speaker 2: two things are happening concurrently in NIL era an enthusiastic
- 19:49Speaker 2: and wealthy booster base helping Kalani, right? I mean, you
- 19:53Speaker 2: could revise history and you can revise the present however
- 19:57Speaker 2: you want, all right? To make yourself feel better, but
- 20:01Speaker 2: this is not the way, ladies and gentlemen. Go to
- 20:04Speaker 2: every program in every state and in every city in
- 20:08Speaker 2: the country and there is a head coach who is
- 20:11Speaker 2: pressuring players to get their butts back on the field
- 20:14Speaker 2: as soon as they can. Are there rare occasions on
- 20:17Speaker 2: which the communication between a medical staff and a coaching
- 20:23Speaker 2: staff breaks down or is inadequate in the first place
- 20:26Speaker 2: and that player feels victimized by it? Yes, sure there is.
- 20:31Speaker 2: It does not mean what you think it means. It
- 20:34Speaker 2: does not mean what these comments. I'm not even the article.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I want to be fair to Jason Battaglia with these
- 20:39Speaker 2: comments and these reactions are saying just like, oh yeah, see,
- 20:43Speaker 2: this guy was bullying players and threatening players into getting
- 20:46Speaker 2: back on the field.
- 20:47Speaker 5: I hope he was. That's the job of a coach.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Do you know how many guys in that room, in
- 20:55Speaker 2: that meeting room and on that roster, do you know
- 20:58Speaker 2: how many of those guys would die to get on
- 21:01Speaker 2: the field as much as they wanted van Fillinger on
- 21:03Speaker 2: the field? How many guys would just be like, please, please,
- 21:07Speaker 2: please let van stay hurt. And let me go take
- 21:11Speaker 2: his reps. You know, how many guys want to be
- 21:14Speaker 2: in that position? And when you are the guy in
- 21:17Speaker 2: that position and your ankle hurts, your leg doesn't work.
- 21:22Speaker 2: The grass is greener on the other side. The grass
- 21:24Speaker 2: is greener on the walk on side who doesn't have
- 21:26Speaker 2: to do Jack. If you're Van Fillinger, he's probably the
- 21:29Speaker 2: only guy built like him with a scholarship like him
- 21:33Speaker 2: and NIL like him that ever looked at a walk-on
- 21:35Speaker 2: who got to sit around on game day and sit
- 21:37Speaker 2: around for most of practice and say, man, I'm jealous
- 21:40Speaker 2: of that guy because he's in pain. He's hurting. He's
- 21:43Speaker 2: forcing his way through. And you know what, Van, I
- 21:46Speaker 2: am now after being critical of you for years, I
- 21:49Speaker 2: am grateful that you gave it your best and that
- 21:51Speaker 2: you tried real hard. I don't love the fact that
- 21:56Speaker 2: That part of the story now is you having to,
- 22:00Speaker 2: you feeling like you have to go out there and say,
- 22:03Speaker 2: oh yeah, by the way, this coaching staff bullied me
- 22:07Speaker 2: into getting back on the field.
- 22:09Speaker 8: All right.
- 22:10Speaker 4: And what the article's not telling you is that I
- 22:13Speaker 4: would bet, I would bet a decent amount of money
- 22:16Speaker 4: that every single one of these players wanted to go
- 22:18Speaker 4: out and play.
- 22:20Speaker 2: What you're frustrated with is the injury itself. That's the
- 22:24Speaker 2: first thing that you're mad about when you're a player.
- 22:29Speaker 2: And then you're mad that your body doesn't work the
- 22:31Speaker 2: way that it's supposed to. And then you're mad that
- 22:34Speaker 2: the recovery doesn't go as smoothly as you thought. And
- 22:36Speaker 2: then you're mad at the people that you think are
- 22:39Speaker 2: the reason for the recovery, not going all that smoothly.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And that is where this thing with the coaches comes
- 22:44Speaker 2: in because you're like, well, wait, if I would have
- 22:45Speaker 2: been given my full six weeks, or if I would
- 22:48Speaker 2: have been allowed to red shirt as van disputes that
- 22:51Speaker 2: he was not allowed to red shirt. The way that
- 22:54Speaker 2: we were told was like, hey, man, he probably should
- 22:57Speaker 2: have redshirted last year, but he wanted to play. There
- 23:02Speaker 2: are no heroes and no villains in this college football game.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Not in an absolute sense, all right? I wish it
- 23:11Speaker 2: were as black and white as that. I wish it
- 23:13Speaker 2: were as binary as that. But you cannot separate one
- 23:17Speaker 2: thing from the other. You cannot separate Utah's physical, hard-nosed,
- 23:24Speaker 2: We're going to beat you up. We're going to run
- 23:26Speaker 2: the ball down your throat. We're going to stop you
- 23:29Speaker 2: from running the ball. Death taxes in Utah football. If
- 23:32Speaker 2: you were celebrating any of that, which all of us were,
- 23:37Speaker 2: when Joel Klatt was saying it and Kirk Herbstreet was
- 23:39Speaker 2: saying it and Kyle Whittingham has one of the toughest
- 23:42Speaker 2: teams in the whole nation, when you were clapping about
- 23:45Speaker 2: that and you were patting yourself on the back for
- 23:47Speaker 2: being a fan of that, you have to accept that
- 23:50Speaker 2: this was part of it. that there were guys in
- 23:53Speaker 2: that locker room who were expected to be tougher than
- 23:58Speaker 2: they wanted to be maybe on rare occasion to their
- 24:02Speaker 2: own physical detriment at the expense of their own health.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And let me tell you something. I like all of you.
- 24:15Speaker 2: get a little uncomfortable when I see these 50 and
- 24:19Speaker 2: 60 year old football players walking like they're 80 and
- 24:22Speaker 2: 90 years old. So who, man, they really, they really
- 24:26Speaker 2: sacrificed a lot for our entertainment, didn't they? But I
- 24:30Speaker 2: stopped short of chastising the system and saying, how dare
- 24:35Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham pressure that guy into playing. Oh, but also
- 24:38Speaker 2: by the way, have you seen Ben Fillinger since he
- 24:43Speaker 2: stopped playing football at the university of Utah? I don't
- 24:47Speaker 2: know if he could run fast. I don't know if
- 24:49Speaker 2: his ankles better, but the guy's doing okay. Physically also,
- 24:56Speaker 2: he voluntarily decided he wanted to be part of a
- 24:59Speaker 2: bull riding challenge. So You can't, and I'm using van
- 25:04Speaker 2: as the example here because he's the headliner, but like
- 25:07Speaker 2: you can't talk about how your body is broken down
- 25:10Speaker 2: and destroyed from your football career. And not because of
- 25:13Speaker 2: my own choices, but because the coaching staff bullied me
- 25:16Speaker 2: into this and then sign up to ride a bull
- 25:20Speaker 2: for fun. You can't do those two things. That's like
- 25:22Speaker 2: the workers comp claim that the investigator comes and finds
- 25:27Speaker 2: you putting shingles on your own roof. but you're like,
- 25:31Speaker 2: oh yeah, I have to, I'm bedridden. I can't like
- 25:37Speaker 2: those two things can't be true. You're not going to
- 25:42Speaker 2: get me to revise history and say, oh yeah, listen,
- 25:47Speaker 2: look at this guy. And I know a lot of
- 25:49Speaker 2: you are probably mad that it sounds like I'm defending
- 25:52Speaker 2: everything that Kyle Whittingham does or Kyle Whittingham did.
- 25:55Speaker 5: That's not what I'm doing.
- 25:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:57Speaker 5: But Acting like this is outside.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Of the norm in college football, that players felt pressure
- 26:05Speaker 2: to get back on the field because of some unique
- 26:09Speaker 2: evil emperor named wit. And nobody else does that. That
- 26:14Speaker 2: Kalani is not doing that. That Morgan won't be doing that.
- 26:18Speaker 2: That Sonny Dykes isn't yelling at guys. Get your pansy
- 26:22Speaker 2: behind out of the training room and onto the field.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Even Lincoln Riley's soft ass is telling USC players, Hey,
- 26:31Speaker 2: put some tape on it, rub a little dirt on it,
- 26:33Speaker 2: and let's get back on the field. This is football
- 26:36Speaker 2: culture that is being described in the article. And if
- 26:41Speaker 2: you don't like it, that's fine. If you want to
- 26:44Speaker 2: shake a finger at it and poo poo it and
- 26:46Speaker 2: not buy a ticket because of it, that's also fine.
- 26:50Speaker 2: But if you're going to act like this is unique
- 26:52Speaker 2: to the university of Utah under Kyle Whittingham's leadership, you
- 26:55Speaker 2: are completely delusional up in the night outside of your mind.
- 27:03Speaker 2: And that's, I didn't even yet address the fact that
- 27:07Speaker 2: when coaches are asked for comment about this, what do
- 27:09Speaker 2: they do? They deflect. They say, well, hold on a minute.
- 27:12Speaker 2: We don't make decisions on whether players are available or not.
- 27:15Speaker 2: That's on the medical professionals. That's on the training staff.
- 27:18Speaker 2: That's on the team doctors.
- 27:20Speaker 5: Okay.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yes. You know who else feels pressures from coach to
- 27:24Speaker 2: let players back on the field, medical staff, team doctors. Again,
- 27:29Speaker 2: this is part of the whole deal in football. And
- 27:34Speaker 2: if we were talking about players from the 1990s and
- 27:38Speaker 2: Ron McBride used to do this to us, I'd be
- 27:40Speaker 2: saying the same thing, but I'd also be going, you
- 27:43Speaker 2: know what? And these guys were doing it for free.
- 27:45Speaker 2: These guys were doing it for nothing. A lot of
- 27:48Speaker 2: the guys mentioned in this article are Well, all of
- 27:52Speaker 2: them were on scholarship, free education, better housing and meal
- 27:57Speaker 2: plan than any other college student up there, and plenty
- 28:01Speaker 2: of them had extra money on top of that from
- 28:04Speaker 2: an NIL front. If you don't want to be part
- 28:11Speaker 2: of a football culture, if you don't want to be
- 28:13Speaker 2: part of an athlete warrior culture, you can join... the 65,000
- 28:19Speaker 2: people in the stands at Lavelle Edwards stadium. You could
- 28:23Speaker 2: join the 50,000 people in the stands at rice Eccles stadium.
- 28:26Speaker 2: You could join the 75,000 people in the stands at
- 28:29Speaker 2: your favorite NFL stadium. You could join the a hundred
- 28:32Speaker 2: thousand fans in the stadium at the big house. If
- 28:35Speaker 2: you're willing and able to take it upon yourself to compete,
- 28:42Speaker 2: part of what you're accepting is that you're going to
- 28:44Speaker 2: do so when you're in pain. I was never a
- 28:49Speaker 2: good enough college football player to compete on the field.
- 28:53Speaker 2: When I was less than a hundred percent, my a
- 28:55Speaker 2: hundred percent was barely good enough to get on special
- 28:57Speaker 2: teams in division one football. So if I was less
- 29:00Speaker 2: than a hundred percent, they're just like, Oh no, just
- 29:02Speaker 2: put somebody else in. Right. When I moved on to
- 29:06Speaker 2: a professional fighting career, do you know how many fights
- 29:09Speaker 2: I had where I felt good? How many fights I
- 29:11Speaker 2: had where I was a hundred percent, how many fights
- 29:14Speaker 2: where going into the second round, uh, My coach is
- 29:18Speaker 2: just like, you better get your ass up and move
- 29:21Speaker 2: your head and block the next punch instead of chewing
- 29:24Speaker 2: on it and spitting it out. That's part of being
- 29:27Speaker 2: an athlete. That's part of being a competitor. That's why
- 29:30Speaker 2: you get the scholarship and why you are paid the
- 29:32Speaker 2: big bucks. If you want to complain about it after
- 29:36Speaker 2: the fact, do it somewhere else to someone else. And
- 29:41Speaker 2: let's not platform this in this way. Yes, it's convenient. Yes,
- 29:47Speaker 2: you're going to get your clicks. Yes, you're going to
- 29:49Speaker 2: get your reads. Jason Bataki out my dog. You're really,
- 29:52Speaker 2: really good at the job. This article, this subject is
- 29:57Speaker 2: The way that this is framed as just a great
- 30:00Speaker 2: opportunity to pile on the hatred that Kyle Whittingham is
- 30:05Speaker 2: feeling from the state of Utah, from this Utah football community,
- 30:09Speaker 2: this is not the right thing six days before the
- 30:13Speaker 2: season kicks off. And I just gave it 30 minutes,
- 30:16Speaker 2: which probably is also not the right thing on the
- 30:18Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell show. We'll take a break. We'll come back
- 30:21Speaker 2: with the voice of the Utes, Bill Riley. I will
- 30:23Speaker 2: probably ask him a question about this, but I won't
- 30:25Speaker 2: make it too big of a thing. CSPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Conversations with Bill brought to you by our friends over
- 30:32Speaker 2: at Handy and Handy, HandyLawUtah.com. Bill Riley, welcome back to
- 30:37Speaker 2: the show. How are you, sir?
- 30:39Speaker 5: Hi, Sean.
- 30:39Speaker 6: I'm good.
- 30:40Speaker 9: Doing a little, maybe do a little scouting of those
- 30:43Speaker 9: Idaho Vandals a little bit later on this evening as
- 30:45Speaker 9: they play the Mustangs of Cal Poly down in Southern California.
- 30:50Speaker 9: But yeah, I'm ready to go.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 30:53Speaker 2: You got to see more of camp than all of
- 30:55Speaker 2: us regular blokes in the media did. And, you know,
- 30:59Speaker 2: there were a lot of questions heading into this one.
- 31:02Speaker 2: What's the offensive line going to look like? Primarily the
- 31:05Speaker 2: the pressing one for the offense on defense. You had
- 31:09Speaker 2: to figure out what the pass rush is going to be,
- 31:11Speaker 2: what the defensive interior is going to look like. There's
- 31:15Speaker 2: questions at safety. I think that's a good answer one
- 31:17Speaker 2: way or the other because you've got four guys who
- 31:19Speaker 2: can really play the position. Seeing what you saw and
- 31:23Speaker 2: talking to who you talk to, how do you grade
- 31:26Speaker 2: the preseason, if that's a thing, for Utah football?
- 31:30Speaker 9: I don't know if I could put a grade on
- 31:31Speaker 9: it because it was practice.
- 31:34Speaker 2: You don't know.
- 31:35Speaker 9: Until you get in game situations. But the concerns about
- 31:40Speaker 9: the offensive line, I get it. I've said this about
- 31:43Speaker 9: a million times since the season ended and everybody pointing
- 31:47Speaker 9: at those. I didn't see it a lot in the spring,
- 31:51Speaker 9: talking to coaches, watching fall camp. I think they're going
- 31:55Speaker 9: to be good. I think they're going to be good.
- 31:56Speaker 9: They're going to be fine. There was talent in the
- 31:58Speaker 9: program already. There's more talent that was brought in through
- 32:02Speaker 9: recruiting in the offseason. Good coaching in Jordan Gross. I
- 32:08Speaker 9: think the offensive line for Utah is going to be good.
- 32:10Speaker 9: Is it going to be generational like it was last year?
- 32:13Speaker 9: Are they going to be second in the nation in
- 32:14Speaker 9: rushing the football? I don't know about that. but I
- 32:17Speaker 9: don't think that there's going to be a market drop-off
- 32:20Speaker 9: up front this year. I think it's going to be
- 32:22Speaker 9: a good offensive line. Defensive line, there's a lot of
- 32:25Speaker 9: guys there. It's one of those things, though, that you're
- 32:29Speaker 9: not hitting quarterbacks. You're not doing as much of that
- 32:31Speaker 9: stuff physically as you would in a game situation. So
- 32:36Speaker 9: that's probably where I'm going to watch a lot on
- 32:38Speaker 9: Thursday night when Idaho comes to town, just the rotations
- 32:42Speaker 9: and who stands out on that defensive line because they've
- 32:45Speaker 9: got a lot of bodies there. but they don't have
- 32:47Speaker 9: a lot of bodies that have done it for Utah
- 32:51Speaker 9: at a high level. Cash Dillon was a reserve last
- 32:55Speaker 9: year that had some moments. Lance holds claw had to
- 32:57Speaker 9: play behind John Henry Daly, who was an all American
- 33:01Speaker 9: last year. Paul Fitzgerald was hurt last year. So I,
- 33:07Speaker 9: Ethan Day was in North Texas last year. They brought
- 33:10Speaker 9: in three, four new defensive tackles through the portal. But
- 33:14Speaker 9: you've got a couple of young players who showed some
- 33:16Speaker 9: nice flashes in Cepalona and Kapusi last year. So for me,
- 33:21Speaker 9: I don't have much concern about that offensive line. I
- 33:27Speaker 9: don't have a lot of concern about the defensive line.
- 33:29Speaker 9: I just want to see how that plays because it's
- 33:32Speaker 9: a lot easier to rotate on the defensive line and
- 33:35Speaker 9: guys can earn more snaps. You're going to go with
- 33:37Speaker 9: your five guys on the offensive line and those are
- 33:39Speaker 9: your five guys. Of the two spots, I'm more anxious
- 33:43Speaker 9: to see what the defensive line does than the offensive line.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Okay.
- 33:48Speaker 2: So right or wrong, whatever happens this year is going
- 33:52Speaker 2: to be looked at through the comparative lens, but you know,
- 33:55Speaker 2: what Morgan does in his first year versus what we've
- 33:58Speaker 2: had in the last 21 years and for better or worse,
- 34:01Speaker 2: you know, we're, we're going to hold up, you know,
- 34:04Speaker 2: the injury report and all these things to like, is
- 34:07Speaker 2: this better or worse than it was before with camp
- 34:10Speaker 2: in the rear view now and a week or so
- 34:13Speaker 2: of game prep going, Those two guys are more similar
- 34:16Speaker 2: than they are different as coaches, as people, but there
- 34:19Speaker 2: are differences. Were those things noticeable to you out at
- 34:23Speaker 2: camp when you were able to watch practice, you know,
- 34:26Speaker 2: based on conversation with players and assistant coaches? What are
- 34:30Speaker 2: the major differences through the eyes of the voice of
- 34:32Speaker 2: the youths?
- 34:34Speaker 9: I just, there's a different energy that Morgan brings and
- 34:39Speaker 9: just the approach that they have. He wanders the field
- 34:43Speaker 9: a little bit more, I think, than Kyle did. Kyle
- 34:45Speaker 9: moved around a little bit. You know, Morgan would be
- 34:47Speaker 9: here one minute, then he'd look over there, he's gone,
- 34:49Speaker 9: he's at a different point of the field. I really do,
- 34:53Speaker 9: and maybe because I was up there just a lot
- 34:55Speaker 9: more this year, the sports science side of things is
- 34:58Speaker 9: something that Scali and this staff have are really, really
- 35:02Speaker 9: leaning heavily into. That sports science staff, they've beefed up
- 35:06Speaker 9: that staff. It's been really interesting to watch and track
- 35:11Speaker 9: and see how they're leaning in, not just analytically, which
- 35:15Speaker 9: they're doing a lot of that with the new general manager,
- 35:17Speaker 9: Joe D'Orazio and his staff, but on the sports science
- 35:21Speaker 9: and strength and conditioning side of things, that's been a
- 35:24Speaker 9: little bit different this year too. And I think I
- 35:27Speaker 9: think that and that approach and the way they approach
- 35:30Speaker 9: fall camp could really pay dividends as this season goes along.
- 35:35Speaker 2: O'Reilly is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show
- 35:37Speaker 2: talking all things Utes. As I want to do, I've
- 35:40Speaker 2: been throwing out some over-unders regarding my predictions for this
- 35:45Speaker 2: upcoming season, the statistical predictions. And one of the ones
- 35:49Speaker 2: that intrigues me the most that we had a good,
- 35:50Speaker 2: robust conversation about with some of the listeners is whether
- 35:53Speaker 2: or not there's a double-digit sack man on the roster
- 35:56Speaker 2: this year. Is there a John Henry Daly who, this
- 35:59Speaker 2: time a year ago, most of us were not expecting
- 36:02Speaker 2: John Henry Daly to be an All-American?
- 36:04Speaker 9: He had one sack in 2024, Sean. He had one
- 36:07Speaker 9: sack and played limited snaps. Nobody in their right mind
- 36:11Speaker 9: would have predicted what John Henry Daly did before the
- 36:14Speaker 9: season last year.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Which informs this question even more, right? Because Lance Holtzclaw
- 36:19Speaker 2: is a sack and a half, right? And a lot
- 36:21Speaker 2: of people think that he is the next big thing.
- 36:23Speaker 2: And you already made a great point about Cash Dillon.
- 36:25Speaker 2: When he had reps, he made... good use of those
- 36:29Speaker 2: reps in live action. Ethan day is a game wrecker
- 36:33Speaker 2: at the North Texas level. Will he be at the
- 36:36Speaker 2: big 12 level and a healthy Paul Fitzgerald has already
- 36:39Speaker 2: showed us. He can have eight sacks for Utah state.
- 36:44Speaker 2: So maybe a little extra weight room, a little extra coaching,
- 36:48Speaker 2: and that eight becomes 10. Is there a double digit
- 36:50Speaker 2: sack man on this year's roster?
- 36:52Speaker 9: I think there's a chance to be all four of
- 36:54Speaker 9: those guys you mentioned. If I was betting if I
- 36:58Speaker 9: was a betting man, which of course I'm not, this
- 37:00Speaker 9: is for entertainment purposes only. I would bet we have
- 37:04Speaker 9: four of those guys that have between five and eight
- 37:07Speaker 9: sacks each. I would bet we have that, you know,
- 37:10Speaker 9: maybe Holtzclaw grabs nine, maybe Fitzgerald grabs five, maybe day
- 37:15Speaker 9: grabs seven, maybe cash. Dylan has seven or eight, which
- 37:20Speaker 9: by the way, I, if I'm, Inoki Brechterfield, I might
- 37:24Speaker 9: rather have that because that's producing me close to 40
- 37:28Speaker 9: sacks versus one guy that might get 11 and a
- 37:32Speaker 9: half and one guy that might get three. So I
- 37:36Speaker 9: think there's a possibility. I certainly think somebody could, but
- 37:40Speaker 9: I would bet you probably have four guys that have
- 37:42Speaker 9: between five and 10 sacks between them each more than
- 37:46Speaker 9: one guy that's double digits.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Another stat that when I took a look at it again,
- 37:51Speaker 2: it started to rehaunt me over last year because like
- 37:55Speaker 2: this was an 11 and two football team last year
- 37:57Speaker 2: of really excellent year. But there were a couple of
- 38:00Speaker 2: games where even in wins, a lot of us felt
- 38:04Speaker 2: sick in the pit of our stomach with how bad
- 38:06Speaker 2: the run defense was. Utah finished 110th overall in the
- 38:10Speaker 2: country in run defense when it was all said and
- 38:13Speaker 2: done last year. So I lopped 60 yards a game
- 38:17Speaker 2: off of what they gave up last year. And I said,
- 38:19Speaker 2: can this team stay under 125 and a half in
- 38:23Speaker 2: yards surrendered on the ground to their opposition? There were
- 38:26Speaker 2: only four games last year where they managed to keep
- 38:29Speaker 2: the team, the opposition under one 25 and a half.
- 38:32Speaker 2: If you're in that range, you're kind of top 30
- 38:34Speaker 2: in the country. I think that's where you need to
- 38:36Speaker 2: be to stay competitive. Unless you have a crazy offense
- 38:40Speaker 2: like they did last year. The larger question is of course,
- 38:43Speaker 2: about improving the run defense, but can they improve 50
- 38:47Speaker 2: or 60 yards over what they did last year in
- 38:49Speaker 2: your mind?
- 38:50Speaker 9: Well, I think that goes to those guys we were
- 38:52Speaker 9: talking about a minute ago, those tackles. They brought a
- 38:55Speaker 9: lot of guys in like Moe and Samsula and Wallace
- 39:00Speaker 9: to be space eaters up front, to eat up those blocks,
- 39:04Speaker 9: to allow the linebackers like Reynolds and Hall and Palu
- 39:08Speaker 9: to kind of do the work behind them. So, yeah,
- 39:11Speaker 9: I think they can't. And to be fair, I mean,
- 39:15Speaker 9: They they didn't really get beat last year by teams
- 39:20Speaker 9: that ran the ball down their throat. I mean, I
- 39:23Speaker 9: know they gave up those yards in the K state
- 39:25Speaker 9: game and it could have lost that, but they didn't
- 39:26Speaker 9: lose the K state. They gave up some big, the
- 39:29Speaker 9: two games they lost, they were kind of beaten by
- 39:33Speaker 9: quarterbacks in their legs. Bear Bachmeier made big plays with
- 39:37Speaker 9: his legs in the BYU game. LJ Martin wasn't the
- 39:40Speaker 9: guy that beat Utah in that game. Utah beat itself and, and, and,
- 39:44Speaker 9: and Bachmeier made some nice runs. And to be fair,
- 39:48Speaker 9: as good as a running game as Texas Tech had
- 39:50Speaker 9: last year, the tiny back, I think it's Williams, Jacoby Williams,
- 39:55Speaker 9: he had one long run, but Utah got beat by
- 39:58Speaker 9: Will Hammond. It was Will Hammond scrambling with the football
- 40:03Speaker 9: when he came in for the starting quarterback last year
- 40:06Speaker 9: that was what beat Utah. So I think Utah and
- 40:10Speaker 9: the K-State game really skewed it badly, but I thought
- 40:13Speaker 9: they were pretty good against the run most of the year, Sean.
- 40:17Speaker 9: except quarterback scramble. So you've got to be able to
- 40:19Speaker 9: account for quarterbacks that can run. Houston's Connor Wegman can
- 40:23Speaker 9: run the football. BYU's Bear Bachmeier can run the football.
- 40:29Speaker 9: We'll see what some of these other quarterbacks have. Arkansas
- 40:31Speaker 9: is probably going to have a quarterback that can run
- 40:32Speaker 9: the football a little bit. So I think for me,
- 40:36Speaker 9: it's when you get those, when you're playing those mobile QBs,
- 40:39Speaker 9: can you keep them from hurting you with their legs?
- 40:43Speaker 2: ESPN put out their list of the top 100 players
- 40:46Speaker 2: in college football. No Utes in the preseason were named.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Last year, obviously, you had Spencer Fano all over these
- 40:53Speaker 2: types of lists. And I think it's okay to look
- 40:56Speaker 2: at the roster now and to not put anyone in
- 40:58Speaker 2: the top 100 of all great college football players. But
- 41:02Speaker 2: if there is somebody who appears on that postseason list,
- 41:06Speaker 2: who would that be?
- 41:09Speaker 9: I think Devin Dampier is the easy answer to that
- 41:12Speaker 9: because if Devin takes another step, I mean, he was
- 41:15Speaker 9: newcomer of the year, the big 12 last year. And
- 41:17Speaker 9: as we have found out subsequently, he was playing through,
- 41:21Speaker 9: he was playing hurt much of the season last year.
- 41:24Speaker 9: So to have the kind of production he had, And
- 41:27Speaker 9: in the condition he was physically shows one, his toughness,
- 41:31Speaker 9: but two, what kind of a gamer he is. So I,
- 41:33Speaker 9: I think the easy answer to that is Devin Dampier.
- 41:36Speaker 9: I will throw another guy out there. I think Jackson
- 41:40Speaker 9: Benny has a chance to be that guy. I think
- 41:43Speaker 9: he flashed some of that last year. He's got great
- 41:46Speaker 9: ball instincts. And I think Benny could be a playmaking
- 41:51Speaker 9: type of guy too. I think way Sean Parker will
- 41:53Speaker 9: have a big year, but there's so many good running backs.
- 41:56Speaker 9: There's just so many good runs, not just in the
- 41:58Speaker 9: Big 12, but in the country, that it's hard, unless
- 42:01Speaker 9: you're having a huge, huge year. And maybe if you
- 42:03Speaker 9: play in big games, maybe if he pops against a
- 42:05Speaker 9: Houston or a BYU or an Arizona in some of
- 42:07Speaker 9: those games, you certainly get on that list. But I
- 42:10Speaker 9: would say Dampier is probably the easy answer with how
- 42:13Speaker 9: dynamic he can be and the weapons at his disposal
- 42:16Speaker 9: this year. But I think Jackson Benny might be a
- 42:18Speaker 9: sneaky guy on that list, too.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Bill Riley for another couple of minutes here on the
- 42:22Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show, talking all things Utah football. As you
- 42:27Speaker 2: get ready for Idaho, I mean, look, respect to the Vandals,
- 42:31Speaker 2: but these games are what they are. It's supposed to
- 42:34Speaker 2: be a tune-up for Utah. It's supposed to be an
- 42:36Speaker 2: opportunity for you to get your actual game speed and
- 42:39Speaker 2: your playing legs under you. What is going to look
- 42:42Speaker 2: like a successful outing, in your opinion?
- 42:46Speaker 9: Well, one, you're healthy. You come out of that game healthy.
- 42:50Speaker 9: And there aren't any major sort of issues or injuries there.
- 42:54Speaker 9: But two, I think I said this with Spence, and
- 42:58Speaker 9: I think I've said it on my podcast. Are your
- 43:01Speaker 9: lines of scrimmage, where people have some questions about you
- 43:04Speaker 9: right now, offensive and defensive lines, can you control those
- 43:09Speaker 9: lines of scrimmage? You're playing a 1AA program that's middle
- 43:14Speaker 9: of the pack in their conference. That's a good conference.
- 43:16Speaker 9: Big Sky's a good conference. But there's not a lot
- 43:19Speaker 9: of expectation for Idaho Vandal football this year. So at
- 43:23Speaker 9: your house, with a lot of talent coming back, can
- 43:27Speaker 9: you go and do what you need to do, and
- 43:30Speaker 9: that's own the lines of scrimmage against a team like Idaho?
- 43:34Speaker 9: Because to me, if you're able to do that, you're
- 43:37Speaker 9: doing what you're supposed to do as Utah football. You'll
- 43:40Speaker 9: get a much better test that second week against Arkansas,
- 43:43Speaker 9: and Again, not highly touted this year in the SEC,
- 43:47Speaker 9: but they're going to bring in SEC caliber athletes. But
- 43:51Speaker 9: how do you look in the trenches and do you
- 43:54Speaker 9: control the lines of scrimmage? And if you do that,
- 43:57Speaker 9: final score, whether it's 28-7 or 63-0, whatever, that doesn't
- 44:03Speaker 9: mean as much to me. But can you control the
- 44:06Speaker 9: lines of scrimmage? Can you protect the football? And can
- 44:09Speaker 9: you get out of there healthy? That's what it is
- 44:11Speaker 9: to me. What about you?
- 44:13Speaker 2: I think you hit all the main points here. I'm
- 44:16Speaker 2: also curious about whoever the starting five on the offensive
- 44:20Speaker 2: line are against Idaho, do we see them for the
- 44:23Speaker 2: whole game or will the experimentation continue on that line
- 44:27Speaker 2: of scrimmage, on the offensive line of scrimmage especially? Because
- 44:30Speaker 2: rotation on the defensive line of scrimmage is a natural thing.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Most of the time you want your same five until
- 44:36Speaker 2: mop-up time when it comes to the starting O-line. But
- 44:41Speaker 2: I'm getting conflicting reports on just how settled those battles are.
- 44:44Speaker 2: And I want to know if Jordan gross and company
- 44:46Speaker 2: are going to be like, all right, first quarter, it's
- 44:48Speaker 2: you guys. Second quarter, it's you guys. Cause you can
- 44:50Speaker 2: kind of afford to do that against Idaho. Not so
- 44:53Speaker 2: much against Arkansas or probably even Utah state.
- 44:56Speaker 9: No, I don't think you're going to experiment. I think
- 44:59Speaker 9: you're going to pick your five and then you're going
- 45:01Speaker 9: to say you're playing two quarters or you're playing two
- 45:03Speaker 9: and a half quarters together, because I think you want
- 45:06Speaker 9: those guys in sync. And once you're done with whatever
- 45:11Speaker 9: their snap count is or however long that might happen
- 45:13Speaker 9: to be two and a half, three quarters, then you're
- 45:16Speaker 9: getting them out of there and you're getting some of
- 45:17Speaker 9: those other guys some experience because you and I both
- 45:20Speaker 9: know the odds are of all five offensive linemen playing
- 45:24Speaker 9: every snap of every game together for 12 games, maybe 13,
- 45:28Speaker 9: maybe 14 or more is pretty rare. So you probably
- 45:33Speaker 9: want to get some of those other guys behind those
- 45:35Speaker 9: starters some game experience. But I would be surprised, and again,
- 45:40Speaker 9: I've not talked to Jordan about what the rotations are
- 45:42Speaker 9: going to look like, but I would be surprised if
- 45:45Speaker 9: they're intermixing starters and reserves. I would think once you
- 45:49Speaker 9: pick your five guys, you want to just get them
- 45:52Speaker 9: as many reps together as you possibly can.
- 45:55Speaker 2: How will you handle the week zero slate? Because, you know,
- 45:59Speaker 2: you're all in on football for the next 12 plus.
- 46:04Speaker 2: So do you use this one as you get to
- 46:06Speaker 2: go fishing one last time or how do you treat
- 46:09Speaker 2: week zero?
- 46:10Speaker 9: No, I'm going to watch some football, maybe a little
- 46:12Speaker 9: Idaho Cal Poly tonight to do a little advanced scout,
- 46:17Speaker 9: a little San Jose State, USC, perhaps tomorrow on NBC.
- 46:22Speaker 9: Maybe catch a little, was it UNLV Hawaii tomorrow night? No,
- 46:26Speaker 9: I want to soak a little football in. I've been
- 46:28Speaker 9: waiting for this. Preseason pro football doesn't do anything for me, Sean,
- 46:32Speaker 9: because it just doesn't mean anything and no starters play.
- 46:36Speaker 9: You're going to see starters playing in all these games,
- 46:38Speaker 9: but especially that Idaho Cal Poly game, just so I
- 46:40Speaker 9: can put my eyeballs on Josh Wood and Demonte Bias
- 46:45Speaker 9: and Ferrari Miller and some of these guys from Idaho
- 46:47Speaker 9: who we'll see on Thursday. By the way, that's a
- 46:50Speaker 9: tough back-to-back for the Vandals. You've got to open on
- 46:54Speaker 9: the road against, you know, Cal Poly's not a juggernaut,
- 46:59Speaker 9: but then you have a short week to go to
- 47:01Speaker 9: play in Salt Lake City. That's not easy.
- 47:04Speaker 2: A big picture question for you. And it's been dominating
- 47:07Speaker 2: the storylines earlier in the week. Not so much today.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Will we have a guy or multiple guys that were
- 47:15Speaker 2: in training camp with an NFL team or did OTAs
- 47:19Speaker 2: or appeared at a preseason game or any of that?
- 47:21Speaker 2: Will any of those people actually play college football because
- 47:25Speaker 2: of a temporary restraining order or an injunction or anything
- 47:28Speaker 2: else in 2026?
- 47:31Speaker 9: I don't think so. I mean, the leagues have come
- 47:34Speaker 9: out pretty strongly against this. I mean, the SEC, the
- 47:39Speaker 9: Big Ten, the ACC, the Big 12, some of the
- 47:41Speaker 9: group of fives, they're all saying they don't want this.
- 47:45Speaker 9: And if some of the threats by some of these
- 47:46Speaker 9: conference commissioners are true, do you want to really risk that?
- 47:50Speaker 9: Do you want a judge to rule in your favor
- 47:53Speaker 9: and then have another judge overrule it? And then you're
- 47:55Speaker 9: fined a half a million dollars and have to sit
- 47:57Speaker 9: out four or five games? I, I, I understand. I
- 48:02Speaker 9: don't approve of it, but I understand why guys like
- 48:04Speaker 9: Kiffin do it. The, the old thought, if I don't
- 48:07Speaker 9: do it, somebody else might plus Kiffin coach Dequan, right?
- 48:11Speaker 9: Last year at old miss. So I get that a
- 48:13Speaker 9: little bit too, but I think we need to remove
- 48:16Speaker 9: this loophole from the game. I think we just need
- 48:19Speaker 9: to pull this loophole and say, no, no, no, no.
- 48:23Speaker 9: You've made the effort. You decided to declare to go pro.
- 48:27Speaker 9: The eligibility is what it was, but you chose to
- 48:29Speaker 9: do that. You're not able to come back to college football.
- 48:32Speaker 9: So I don't think we'll see that. I think we're
- 48:37Speaker 9: too close to the season. I think it would cause
- 48:39Speaker 9: too much distraction. Plus, you know, some of these guys,
- 48:44Speaker 9: then they have to come in and learn a playbook.
- 48:46Speaker 9: What kind of a distraction does that bring into your
- 48:48Speaker 9: locker room? So, yeah, I would highly doubt it. You,
- 48:53Speaker 9: you're going to, you'd think we'll see one.
- 48:54Speaker 2: I don't think we see any. What about in basketball?
- 48:56Speaker 2: Obviously you tell disappointing news with the Noam Yakov situation.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Jackson Kohler at BYU, his future now up and up
- 49:04Speaker 2: in the air because of all this stuff. What do
- 49:06Speaker 2: you think in basketball?
- 49:09Speaker 9: Well, we, we, we've, we've seen LSU again in on
- 49:13Speaker 9: the mix with the guy that was the former St.
- 49:15Speaker 9: John's player that was on the jazz roster for a minute. Luis, uh,
- 49:21Speaker 9: I think it's more likely we see it in basketball
- 49:24Speaker 9: because there's more opportunities and there's a little bit more time.
- 49:29Speaker 9: I just think we're too close to the college football
- 49:31Speaker 9: season now, but we're still two months away from the
- 49:34Speaker 9: start of college basketball. So that wouldn't surprise me as much, but,
- 49:40Speaker 9: I hope it doesn't happen. At some point, Sean, we
- 49:44Speaker 9: have to draw the line in the sand that is
- 49:47Speaker 9: actually a permanent line. It's not something that can be moved.
- 49:51Speaker 9: It's not a chalk line. It's a painted line, a
- 49:54Speaker 9: line that can't be just brushed away and readjusted.
- 49:57Speaker 3: So I.
- 49:59Speaker 9: Hope we don't see this. We've got enough issues that
- 50:01Speaker 9: we're dealing with. To add this another new layer to it,
- 50:04Speaker 9: it just seems like more– I don't know. It just
- 50:08Speaker 9: seems like more than we need to have at this
- 50:10Speaker 9: point in time.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Our conversations with Bill Riley are brought to you by
- 50:15Speaker 2: Handy and Handy, HandyLawUtah.com. Bill, tell the people what they
- 50:19Speaker 2: need to know about Handy and Handy.
- 50:22Speaker 9: Good personal injury attorneys located right here in Utah that
- 50:25Speaker 9: will take really, really good care of you, whether it's
- 50:28Speaker 9: you or a loved one that's been hurt in an
- 50:30Speaker 9: accident at work or whatever it might happen to be.
- 50:33Speaker 9: Preston and Garrett Handy have been doing this thing for
- 50:35Speaker 9: 40 years plus combined, and they'll take great care of you.
- 50:39Speaker 9: I hope you don't have to call them, but if
- 50:40Speaker 9: you need that personal injury attorney, they can help you
- 50:42Speaker 9: out at Handy and Handy.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Bill, six days away. We'll see you up there at
- 50:47Speaker 2: Rice Echoes. Thanks for your time.
- 50:49Speaker 9: That'll be great, Sean. See you soon.
- 50:51Speaker 2: That's Bill Riley voice of the Utes. And before you
- 50:54Speaker 2: jump on me on the Twitter or the text line
- 50:56Speaker 2: for not asking a question about what have we opened
- 51:00Speaker 2: the show talking about? Bill Riley is now officially an
- 51:04Speaker 2: employee of the university. He's at the university of Utah
- 51:08Speaker 2: and it's, it was going to be a no comment anyway.
- 51:13Speaker 2: All right. So we assess that before we jumped on
- 51:17Speaker 2: the air and it's a waste of time to even
- 51:21Speaker 2: put the question out when all he can say is
- 51:23Speaker 2: no comment. So that's why we didn't address the Jason
- 51:27Speaker 2: Patakia article about players allegedly being pressured to play while
- 51:35Speaker 2: injured at the university of Utah during the Kyle Whittingham era.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Also chocolate milk and molasses cookies are delicious. I mean,
- 51:47Speaker 2: we're telling you things that you already knew.
- 51:49Speaker 6: Okay.
- 51:50Speaker 2: We love Oreos. All of Camp Scali coverage is available
- 51:56Speaker 2: on our ESPN700sports. com, on the ESPN700 app. Cenex, LJBR, Beer Bar, Citra, Cooperman,
- 52:04Speaker 2: Big O Tires, Sound Warehouse, Utah Toyota Dealers. They have
- 52:09Speaker 2: made it possible for us to gather and compile all
- 52:11Speaker 2: that sound for you. It's on the website. It's on
- 52:14Speaker 2: the app. And our conversation with Bill Riley will be
- 52:17Speaker 2: up shortly as well. We're going to double up here,
- 52:22Speaker 2: so we'll double the breaks. Carlos Mauricio Ramirez from NFL
- 52:26Speaker 2: International is going to join us. We'll talk maybe a
- 52:28Speaker 2: little RSL with him. He does some MLS stuff also.
- 52:32Speaker 2: But Carlos, in three minutes, well, more like five, it's
- 52:35Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
- 52:39Speaker 5: Carlos, welcome back to the show.
- 52:40Speaker 2: How are you?
- 52:42Speaker 1: Good.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Thank you for the introduction. Happy to be here again.
- 52:46Speaker 2: So what's wrong with our RSL squad. They have not
- 52:49Speaker 2: won an MLS match since may. They got $ 15 million
- 52:54Speaker 2: for selling gozo and everyone's waiting to see how that's
- 52:58Speaker 2: going to be deployed to help this roster. But it
- 53:01Speaker 2: was such a hot start and they've gone ice cold.
- 53:05Speaker 6: Yeah, well, first thing is you mentioned Gozo.
- 53:08Speaker 2: They sold him.
- 53:09Speaker 9: So whenever you sell your best player, you're going to suffer.
- 53:13Speaker 9: No matter what team it is, it could be Real Madrid, Barcelona,
- 53:16Speaker 9: or Real Salt Lake. When you sell an asset like
- 53:19Speaker 9: Xavier Gozo, your team will feel it. And then when
- 53:22Speaker 9: a player that was producing at a high level like
- 53:25Speaker 9: Zach Booth gets hurt in that same spot.
- 53:27Speaker 3: Then you're in scramble mode.
- 53:29Speaker 6: And then when you have two fronts like Leaks Cup
- 53:32Speaker 6: and MLS simultaneously, and you don't have the depth to
- 53:36Speaker 6: withstand the rigors of both competitions, then the problems just
- 53:40Speaker 6: pile up. I see, I think Russell Lake has a
- 53:44Speaker 6: really good team. I mean, with injuries like the RPO injury,
- 53:50Speaker 6: the Annelli injury, now the Zach Booth, which you cannot
- 53:53Speaker 6: control or, you know, budget for. But when you look
- 53:57Speaker 6: at the completion or the totality of the roster, I
- 54:01Speaker 6: see a really, first of all, I think you have
- 54:03Speaker 6: one of the greatest coaches in MLS. Pablo Mastroianni is
- 54:07Speaker 6: a football or soccer savant.
- 54:10Speaker 2: He knows what he's doing. Gozo is the.
- 54:14Speaker 5: Evidence of that.
- 54:16Speaker 9: And then I.
- 54:18Speaker 6: Think has our Connie is, is turning.
- 54:20Speaker 3: Back into shape, recovering from the injury.
- 54:24Speaker 6: You have a wealth of, of homegrown young Utah based
- 54:28Speaker 6: talent like hazard Connie who are making their strides and
- 54:32Speaker 6: major league soccer goes, though, is the latest example. So
- 54:36Speaker 6: I think it's, it's a combination of bat luck, which
- 54:39Speaker 6: comes in the shape of injuries Being, to a degree,
- 54:42Speaker 6: a victim of your own success in being able to
- 54:45Speaker 6: qualify to the next round of League's Cup, then you
- 54:48Speaker 6: lost the game.
- 54:49Speaker 3: To Lyon, which I understand.
- 54:51Speaker 6: But honestly, it's just that, I think. It's bat luck, injuries,
- 54:57Speaker 6: the selling or the sell of departure of Gozo.
- 55:03Speaker 3: Some players underperforming.
- 55:04Speaker 6: I think Victor Ella tune G I'm concerned about here's
- 55:08Speaker 6: a guy who has scored eight goals in champions league
- 55:11Speaker 6: and is nowhere to be seen as your backup nine,
- 55:14Speaker 6: who should be fighting for your starting nine spot against surgery.
- 55:17Speaker 3: So once.
- 55:19Speaker 6: There's continuity issues because of the rotation. So But I
- 55:24Speaker 6: see a really good team when the squad is healthy
- 55:28Speaker 6: and you can depend on just that. That's the skeleton,
- 55:30Speaker 6: the base skeleton of the team. I think it's a
- 55:33Speaker 6: very competitive team with a couple of additions, maybe another
- 55:36Speaker 6: nine perhaps. And I think a winger, a right side
- 55:41Speaker 6: winger to replace goes, Oh, we do wonders for this
- 55:45Speaker 6: squad as well.
- 55:46Speaker 2: A lot of the, you know, headlining moments, a lot
- 55:48Speaker 2: of the headlining goals have been a product of the
- 55:52Speaker 2: goes those mastery and Diego Luna being a finisher and
- 55:56Speaker 2: things like that. When you, when you take a Pippen
- 55:59Speaker 2: away from Jordan or Jordan away from Pippen or whatever,
- 56:01Speaker 2: I think, you know, we've, we failed to recognize how
- 56:05Speaker 2: costly that could be for your other best player. When
- 56:08Speaker 2: now a lot of the defensive pressure is applied in
- 56:11Speaker 2: one spot.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:14Speaker 9: And it's a great point.
- 56:17Speaker 6: A player that I think what I've seen from him
- 56:20Speaker 6: is encouraging is Lineker Rodriguez. Here's a young guy who
- 56:25Speaker 6: you didn't form. He's not you to native, but he's
- 56:28Speaker 6: now spent, I would think enough time with, with the
- 56:31Speaker 6: team that he understands what the, what the tactics demand
- 56:35Speaker 6: from Pablo. He, so far he's been used as another
- 56:38Speaker 6: 10 and, But in that scheme, you only need two.
- 56:41Speaker 6: You need a left 10 and a right 10.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Left side is Diego's.
- 56:44Speaker 3: He's using Gilivogi as the.
- 56:46Speaker 6: Right side 10. And that's where Lineker plays. I wonder,
- 56:50Speaker 6: and that was Gozo's spot before he got played back
- 56:53Speaker 6: into the wingback spot on the right side.
- 56:56Speaker 2: I guess I wonder if at.
- 56:57Speaker 6: Some point with Booth being out, that spot usually goes
- 57:02Speaker 6: to DeAndre Yatling, but he's 33 and a different kind
- 57:07Speaker 6: of player. I wonder if Lineker would be an option
- 57:11Speaker 6: at some point to play that right-hand wingback spot and
- 57:16Speaker 6: replace Gozo. And then you would have three backs, whether
- 57:20Speaker 6: it's Junko or Arias or Quinton or whoever you want
- 57:24Speaker 6: to play.
- 57:24Speaker 3: In the back on the three-back line.
- 57:26Speaker 6: And then you have Lineker would be that right winger
- 57:32Speaker 6: with any combination of Ruiz or Spearings. or Kaliskan or
- 57:39Speaker 6: whoever you want to play in the middle when an
- 57:41Speaker 6: alley comes back and then Sanabria.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Plays the left side.
- 57:44Speaker 6: And then you have your structure with Gilavogi Luna and,
- 57:48Speaker 6: and so you salons up top.
- 57:49Speaker 3: All right.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Switching gears. If you don't mind a little bit to
- 57:53Speaker 2: the NFL, because obviously the, you wear that hat sometimes
- 57:57Speaker 2: and NFL international. Now you've you're in Miami instead of
- 58:01Speaker 2: San Francisco. Is that correct?
- 58:02Speaker 5: Yes.
- 58:03Speaker 3: Yes.
- 58:03Speaker 6: I just moved from, I actually drove from San Francisco
- 58:07Speaker 6: to Miami, a grueling mind, a challenging endeavor.
- 58:14Speaker 3: From San Jose to Miami.
- 58:15Speaker 8: Yes.
- 58:16Speaker 6: I'm now based out East in Florida.
- 58:17Speaker 5: That's a long, that is a long, long drive.
- 58:21Speaker 2: As we marched towards San those week one games and
- 58:24Speaker 2: every T every team kind of wraps up their pre-season.
- 58:27Speaker 2: Is there any, any squad or any storyline that has
- 58:30Speaker 2: captured your attention in this sort of weird final week
- 58:34Speaker 2: of not real football before we get to the good stuff?
- 58:36Speaker 6: Speaker 5, I guess Cleveland, right? I mean, what the
- 58:39Speaker 6: hell are they doing?
- 58:41Speaker 2: It's the Sean Watson.
- 58:43Speaker 3: It's the Sean Watson. It's it's when you have two quarterbacks,
- 58:46Speaker 3: you have none.
- 58:47Speaker 6: And I would have thought that would have gone with,
- 58:50Speaker 6: with Shadur just to know really what they have.
- 58:53Speaker 3: And I understand it's easier.
- 58:55Speaker 6: To go to the older quarterback first. If he doesn't work,
- 59:00Speaker 6: you ship back to the young guy and shift that man.
- 59:03Speaker 6: That might be the case, but if they're talented, just,
- 59:07Speaker 6: just not there. the worst place you can be in
- 59:11Speaker 6: the NFL is mediocre.
- 59:13Speaker 5: I mean, in between like.
- 59:14Speaker 3: A nine and eight and eight and nine and eight
- 59:17Speaker 3: and 10, seven and 10 team, which they could be.
- 59:21Speaker 6: But if I would have started should urge to know
- 59:24Speaker 6: what I have. And if we tank, we tank. And
- 59:26Speaker 6: then you go get Manning that, but I have no
- 59:29Speaker 6: idea what they're doing in the QB spot. It's a
- 59:32Speaker 6: great question.
- 59:33Speaker 3: And to me, that's a fascinating one. We'll see what happens.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Last thing, and I know we've got to let you go,
- 59:40Speaker 2: but that was going to be my next question. College
- 59:43Speaker 2: football starts week zero this weekend, and then obviously we're
- 59:47Speaker 2: off and running next week in earnest. As you're looking
- 59:51Speaker 2: at college football through the NFL lens, which players are
- 59:55Speaker 2: you watching for that top draft spot in the 2026-2027 cycle?
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: Because I have to go, I'll give you a one-word answer.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Manning.
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: I'm out.
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: That's good enough for us. Thanks for the time. Carlos
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Mauricio Ramirez, NFL international MLS on Apple TV and a
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: friend of the program who is now a drive from
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: San Francisco all the way to Miami cross country for real.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: That's a rough one. I appreciate him giving his thoughts
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: on the RSL situation. Like I was in the building.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: We went and watched last week when RSL battled all
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: the way back against Dallas. They go down early. They
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: battled back, even it up at three, three. And then
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: with like no time left on the clock. In fact,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: it was to be very beginning of extra time. Just
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: allowed the most little league. My best player is better
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: than your best player. He's just going to take it
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: from the corner, dribble around. three guys and put it
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: in the back of the net type goal. And that
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: ended up before three loss. And since then it's been
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: lost to one to Orlando, the aforementioned leagues cup loss
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: to Leon. And tomorrow night it is Colorado and real
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: Salt Lake at Dick's sporting goods park in Colorado. So
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: after that, the next home game, September 5th at America
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: first field against LAFC. Hope to see this squad get
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: back on track after losing some momentum post-World Cup. Tough
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: stuff to deal with. All right, so Carlos, I wanted
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: to pick his brain a little bit more about the
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: rising talents in college football as it pertains to these
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: NFL rosters because you're going to see that conversation happening
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: around college football where You know, there's the Trinidad shambles
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: of the world. There's the arch Mannings of the world,
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: the Julian sayings of the world, these top quarterbacks in
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: college football, then become the top targets in NFL football.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: These NFL teams that are going to kind of figure
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: it out in the first four to six weeks, whether
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: or not they have anything. And beyond that, you're potentially
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: racing toward the bottom. As we saw in the NBA
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: for so many years with Utah jazz, you're racing toward
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: the bottom to try to get yourself the best draft
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: position and the best draft pick. I don't know that
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: we are super clear yet on who that's going to be. Now,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Manning arch Manning's name is obviously rising to the top
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: of many, many lists because his last name is Manning
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: and the low hanging fruit. And you've heard this question
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: asked by every radio guy in the world already is
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: if his name was arch Johnson or arch Jones or
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: arch shambles, would his, star be rising the same way?
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Would people be talking about him the same way? And
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: the obvious answer is no, but because he's Arch Manning
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: and because people see the flashes and the glimmer of, uh,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: you know, that dynasty of quarterback play, they feel like
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: it's lower risk. to go in on, hey, Arch Manning's
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: going to be that guy. Texas obviously felt like it
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: was low risk to go in on Arch Manning being
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: that guy. I think he's an awesome athlete. I think
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: he's got a great arm. I think that it's completely
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: unfair to expect him to be either of his uncles
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: when they're both Super Bowl winners. They're both Hall of Famers.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Peyton obviously is thought of on another tier even than
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: Eli is, but Eli had an insane amount of success
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: at both the college level And the pro levels. And
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: then you go all the way back to grandpa. And
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: so you're being expected to carry this forward. We have
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: some version of that at our local universities, right? Our
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: local schools. You've got like the Ellis's now at the
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: university of Utah, by the way, at Idaho before the
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: older Ellis brothers were Idaho guys, university of Idaho guys
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: that are now killing it in the NFL. Obviously dad
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Luther was a great player for the university of Utah
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: before relocating to Idaho. And then the younger brothers ended
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: up being part of this Utah football roster.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: Both.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Well, not just both. I think all, I think Southern Utah,
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Weber state, Utah state, Utah, and BYU have all fielded
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: one or more Cal Fousey at some point, Andrew.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: Would, I would agree. Kalfusi is everywhere.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: The Kalfusi is, and it's a big clan, right? There's
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: a lot of offshoots. There's cousins, but I think every
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: one of them has had a Kalfusi and most of
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: them have had a Kalfusi on the staff as well
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: as on the field.
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Right. So we, we get some version of this. The
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Glaskers are at BYU right now. You've got a bunch
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: of the Hannemans have got rolled through BYU. The it's
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: a family affair. in a lot of these Utah and
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: BYU football rosters, the same is true with Utah state,
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: but it's a, it's a wildly different animal when we're
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: talking about national football league royalty, when we're talking about
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: what Arch Manning is dealing with and what the NFL
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: and everyone who watches both college football and NFL football
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: are doing in judging that player and judging Arch Manning specifically.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I have a question about this because to me,
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: just from maybe an outsider's perspective on Manning, it feels
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: a little bit like Shador Sanders.
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: A couple years ago.
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: He's a good player, but maybe the media is more
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: in love with him than the actual GMs are going
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: to be. Do you think that could happen where the
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: media is just all over Manning, Manning, Manning, and the
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: GMs are like, Hold a minute.
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: We'll, we'll take him a few rounds later.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: I actually think you bring up an interesting question and
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: I think it's a decent one to ask. I think
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: it's going to go the opposite way. I think that,
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: so what happened with Shador and look at the GMs
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: are kind of being proven, right? So far, what happened
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: with Shador is he was an unbelievable playmaker in college football,
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: like as unlikable as any college football athlete that we've
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: ever seen. But as a playmaker, especially at the lower level,
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: and then when he went to Colorado, with the right receivers,
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: he didn't have the right offensive line, he didn't have
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: the right run game, he didn't have the right defense.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: He had great wide receivers, and he had his own ability.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: He was wildly talented. He was so dang good. Painfully,
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: obnoxiously in some situations. And I think that because of...
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: the way that his public persona was out there, the
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: way that his dad's public persona has been out there
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: for decades and the way that, you know, his brother's
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: legal troubles and all these things. I think that people
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: looked at Shador and, And they were just like, that's
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: a mess waiting to happen for us. If you just
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: take his football in a vacuum, he's not a first-round
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: draft pick. He's not the number one overall pick. But
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: if you just take his football in a vacuum, you're
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: just like, holy cow, this kid's got something. He's got
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: a crazy live arm. I mean, the problem is when
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: your name is Shador Sanders and you are very publicly
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: outwardly forward-facing the equally cocky son of the cockiest player
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: that's ever been in the NFL... You put yourself into
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: different conversations from a comparison standpoint. Instead of being like, hey,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: this guy's a good second, third, fourth round draft pick.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: The NFL was just like, he thinks he's the number
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: one overall draft pick. His talent says he's a third rounder,
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: which for me does like a reverse multiplier and drops
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: him all the way to the fifth or the sixth
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: round because I don't want to deal with the trouble.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: I think Arch Manning will be treated in an opposite manner.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: I think because he has been Such a consummate professional.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: He has been probably, if we're being honest, he'd been
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: like falsely humble in a lot of, like, I think
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: he's been trained to be outwardly humble when quarterbacks are
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: not humble. Peyton Manning is not humble. Eli Manning is
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: not humble. They are not supposed to be humble, but
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: they have that all shucks kind of thing about them.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: And arch carries himself the same way. So let's say
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: that arch has exactly Shador Sanders film. And of course
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: he won't. But if he had exactly Shador Sanders. film,
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: I think arch gets treated better by the NFL than
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Shador was. And Shador is because optics are everything. Expectation
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: is everything. And If you think as an NFL GM,
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: as a coach, you're inheriting a headline and a headache
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: instead of a player who's going to put his head
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: down and work. Shador puts his head down and works. Nobody,
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: even his biggest detractors, his biggest haters, nobody was out
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: there saying that Shador Sanders doesn't put in the time
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: to master the craft of being a quarterback. He likes
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: the flashy stuff about it. He likes the watches. He
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: likes the cars. He likes the interviews. He likes to
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: be like the guy that people talk about arch. to
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: be determined. Seems like he doesn't necessarily love it as much,
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: but it's the optics. It's the, and like some people
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: will say it's racially different. Some people will say it's
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: culturally different. What it is is one guy's dad is
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: the Manning that didn't end up playing in the NFL.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: So they judge him by his uncles instead of his dad.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: The other guy's dad is the on bleep and Sanders
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: who has never met a camera. He So these GMs
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: come to that with a frame of reference, with a
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: judgment standpoint, consciously or subconsciously, where they're just like, oof.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: Shador had to be damn near perfect as a football
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: player for people to want everything else that came with Shador.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: And he wasn't. He's a flawed football player. He's a
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: flawed quarterback. Arch Manning. Could be equally flawed, but he'll
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: be given the benefit of the doubt instead of punished
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: for all of that extracurricular stuff, in my opinion. Does
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: that make sense?
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it makes sense. The GMs had to kind of
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: hedge their bets with Shador, essentially.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: Because of all the risks that comes with the publicity
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: with him.
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: They're just Shador is. And I wish I've said this
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: so many times. I actually wish that D I think
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Dion is like, like so many of us, he is
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: the dad that just has a blind spot specifically for
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: his kids. I think that he's the right coach for
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: a lot of the other guys that went and played
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: at the university of Colorado. a lot of guys that,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: you know, he, he would deliberately talk about guys who
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: didn't have a father figure at home. He wanted to
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: be that he wanted to like, especially for African-American young
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: men who came from backgrounds similar to his own, he
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: wanted to like bring those guys under his wing and
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: teach them. Kind of his way, and it might not
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: be everyone's right way, but his way made sense, right?
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: He's a very outwardly faithful type person. He wanted it
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: to be a Christian type atmosphere. He wanted God to
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: be a big part of people's lives. He was forcing
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: that or pressing that onto players. I think for a
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: lot of players, that was a good thing. I think
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: that Deion... like teaching guys what the NFL was going
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: to be about while they were in college was exactly
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: what a lot of these young men were looking for
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: in their environment. And I think that he had a
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: certain level of accountability in his program that a lot
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: of guys, especially guys that were going to like the
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Jackson states of the world didn't necessarily expect, but his
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: own sons, he did not do that too. And he
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: did not do that with, and we haven't talked about
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: this a ton on the show. Cause I think people
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: have primetime fatigue, he's getting like summons to court and subpoenas. to,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: to go testify in not Shador's case, but Shiloh's case,
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: Shiloh's legal cases, because his son's like his son beat
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: somebody up at school, a staff member at school when
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: he was in high school and got sued and had
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: to file bankruptcy. He's got like an $ 11 million bankruptcy
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: filing situation that Dion has to be a part of.
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: And he's being called to court, testify in court during
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: the football season. Like Yeah.
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: That's not going to go great for Colorado. It's not
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: going to go great for Colorado.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: And also if you're in the NFL, if you're an
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: NFL GM, or if you're an NFL franchise, you're just like,
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: I don't know, man.
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: Yeah. You've got 52 other players that also generate headlines.
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: You can't have one. That's going over the top. What
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: kind of other stuff are we doing here?
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: Because like, you know, like the, and again, like Shador
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: just doesn't do himself any favors because a lot of
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: guys don't want to talk to the media and that's
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: totally fine. They treat people respectfully when they don't want
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: to talk to the media. I don't want to paint
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: with a blanket brush here. The media day experiences we
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: had with Dion. Dion was great. Travis Hunter was great.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: Shador was a pain in the ass. Was a jerk
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: to everybody. And like, again, that's anecdotal. I'm only speaking
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: from my own experience. But I also talked to a
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: lot of people who had the same experience, right?
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: So it's like, okay. You could fake it.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: It's very, very easy to be a fake likable person.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: You know what it's supposed to look like. He didn't
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: do that. And I think it hurt him in the
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: NFL and it's still hurting him in the NFL to
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: some extent. I pulled up the Shador Sanders pro stats.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: I need to find his college stats. Arch Manning is
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: coming off a season at Texas. Remember, this is his
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: fourth year at Texas now. He's coming off a season
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: at Texas where he had three 3,163 yards, 26 touchdowns,
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: seven interceptions. That by itself is a pretty dang good season.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: If you gave anybody those numbers who wasn't named Arch Manning, everyone.
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: Would be like, okay, that's a solid year for your quarterback.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: 61% is not the completion percentage I'm looking for. I
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: need that to be closer to 65, 70. We'd probably
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: look at it and be like, all right, cool. but
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: it's not good enough when it's Arch Manning. And now
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: that lens doesn't just get focused on expectations for his
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: Texas career. It's also going to be a dual examination of, okay,
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: what is he in next year's draft? His running ability,
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: his athleticism, his arm, his processing speed, all of those
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: things come into even more hyper-focus because teams want Arch
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: Manning to be near the top of the draft. They
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: want They want what we hope is true about him
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: to be true about him. They want a Manning. It's
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: a low risk proposition for any GM, any coach. If
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: you're at the top of the draft, if you're in
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: the top five and you select a quarterback named Manning,
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: your fan base is going to be like, I like that.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: I like that. That's a good pick. I don't know.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: Got to take a break here. Sean O'Connell show continues

- 1:17:23Speaker 2: mammoth fans. We're still a couple of months away from
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: where this team needs to be talked about in earnest,
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: but would you support bill Armstrong and company being a
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: hyper aggressive and trying to solve your goaltender problem? And
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: when I say goaltender problem, I mean, your backup goaltender problem.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Veggie was the most active in the entire league last year.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: He played more games than any other goaltender in the league.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: He is a grinder. This is a guy who was,
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: I mean, there were 12 and 13 game stretches where
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: he did not get any rest. And part of that
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: was because there was not a ton of trust from
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: coach bear and the rest of the front office that
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: your backup was going to be any kind of any good. Now,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: veggie was supposed to be the backup when he arrived.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: And obviously the Connor Ingram mental health situation became a thing.
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: Veggie stepped up, did everything that you were, that he
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: was asked and he became your bonafide number one goaltender.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: He became a guy that, uh, I think the fans
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: kind of rallied behind.
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: He needs help.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: You need a better backup goaltender in this mammoth pipeline or, uh,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: not just in the pipeline on the big league roster
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: on the NHL roster. And you need it now made
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: the playoffs last year. You want to win some playoff series.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: You probably need to make sure that veggie is not
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: fading at the end of the season. And they did
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: not lose the playoff series to the Vegas gold Knights
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: because of veggie. But The point stands that you still
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: need to fix that. Well, one of the biggest names
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: in NHL goaltending has requested a trade out of Winnipeg
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: and Connor Hellebook is now available on the open trade market.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Most of the publications that are looking for his, his
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: next landing spot are not even mentioning the Utah mammoth,
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: but I think what this does is it potentially creates
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: a domino effect where you probably don't end up with
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: hella buck. I don't even think you want to end
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: up with hella buck because then it's one of those
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: like two quarterback situations. You got two starting goalies. You
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: don't want to starting goalies. You want there to be
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: a pretty clear pecking order. At least for now, he's
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: probably going to end up in Buffalo or heaven forbid.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: He ends up with San Jose. I don't think San
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: Jose wants to mortgage any of their young talent. to
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: try and acquire him. If you're Winnipeg, you would demand
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: that they do that. No one's getting Macklin Celebrini out
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: of there, but the supporting cast is going to be
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: important for San Jose to terrorize the West and including
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: the Utah mammoth for the coming years. I think the
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: more likely outcome here is that like, let's say he
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: ends up in Buffalo or he ends up in Carolina
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: or he ends up in one of these places. I
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: hope he ends up in the East. He ends up
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: in one of these places that feels like they're a,
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: a goalie away from either another Stanley cup or real
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: Stanley cup contention. To be clear, Utah does not feel
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: like they are a goalie away. They feel like they
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: have their guide, their contract and the extension that they
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: gave to veggie indicates as such. But if somebody else
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: goes out and gets hella buck, that's going to shuffle
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: a deck in another position room, right? Another franchise's position room.
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: And if you're not, confident in your young pipeline coming
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: from Tucson and other places for Utah, for the Utah mammoth,
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: then maybe some of that trickle down effect ends up
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: freeing up, you know, another veteran goaltender who's got, who
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: can give you 30 games a year and allow for
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: veggie to have a more rested season in 2026, 2027
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: than he had last year. But that was, It's something
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: that really interestingly that, you know, Hellebuck, he is the
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: team USA goaltender. He's a guy that at his very
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: best can be the best in the entire league. Didn't
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: have a great statistical year last year. He was actually
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: 23 and 23 as the starter for, for Winnipeg. He
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: was veggie was statistically a better gold, better goaltender than
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: Connor Hellebuck was. If that matters to you, apparently he
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: made this trade request and, privately to Winnipeg a long
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: time ago, months and months ago. And because the season
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: is approaching and things are kind of ramping up and
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: reporting is getting a lot more aggressive, especially on the
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: Canadian hockey front. He, he went to his own social
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: media and released his own statement saying like, look, I
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: tried to do this in the most respectful way, but
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: it is time for me to move on. I did
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: submit a trade request and you know, that, It's a
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: heartbreaker for some Winnipeg fans. Others have wanted him out
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: of there. So hella buck on the move. What does
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: it do for the goalie situation around the league? What
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: does it do for the mammoth? We'll keep an eye
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: on it. Andrew, are you a card collector of any kind?
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: Do you like, do you collect your young chap? What
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: are you like 19?
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: I'm 23.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: You're 23.
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: Are you into the rip in the packs? Are you
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: collecting cards?
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: I've never actually been a card collector. It kind of
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: fascinates me from a different, like a distance, but I've
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: never been like, I've never collected cards.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: So I did when I was a kid, I have
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: not jumped back into the hobby. We talk about it
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: on the show a lot because I'm like you, I
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: get kind of fascinated when you see these crazy stories.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: We talked a couple of weeks ago about the Cooper flag,
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: one of one rookie debut patch card.
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: That was pulled out of a pack. It was pulled
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: out of a pack.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: In Rhode Island that somebody in North Carolina actually owned
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: the card because of, did you hear about this?
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: No, I didn't.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: Okay. I'll explain it to you again because it's fascinating
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: to me. This is apparently a way that things are
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: done in the, the hobby, like the elite level hobby
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: card collecting. So there's a company, there's several of these,
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: but there was a company, uh, in Rhode Island, uh,
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: that their whole thing is they do like live streams
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: of them opening boxes of cards and they get the
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: fancy hobby boxes that are like a thousand dollars to buy.
- 1:23:58Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: If you want, or if I want, or if anyone wants,
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: they can go when this, this box of cards is
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: going to be open. They can say, all right, I'm
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: going to buy the rights to all of the Dallas
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: Mavericks card out of that box or all the Utah
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: jazz cards. or all the San Antonio Spurs cards or
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: all the 49ers cards. That's my team out of this box.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: So you pay like 200 bucks or 50 bucks or
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: a hundred bucks or whatever. And then you get the
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: rights to whatever team that you just paid for. Does
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: that make sense?
- 1:24:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: Okay. So some guy in North Carolina paid 500 bucks
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: to have all the Dallas Mavericks cards out of this box,
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: hoping for this one card to get pulled the one
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: of one rookie debut Cooper flag, which is projected to
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: be the best card in this season, this cycle. I
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: was like, okay, now the equivalent card to this that
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: sold last year at a similar auction, this is going
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: to be auctioned off next month and it's going to
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: be fanatics collect. It'll be It's a gem mint 10,
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: one of one autograph debut tops. Chrome rookie card will
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: be auctioned off on its platform. That in itself was
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: a sweepstakes. All of these auction houses wanted to be
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: the one to auction this thing off. Fanatics collect gets
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: the opportunity to do it. The owner still has not
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: touched the card. He has not seen the card in
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: like a physical form. He has not had it in
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: his hands, which is wild to me, but it has
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: been verified. It is real. It is now the auction
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: house has it. They're going to sell it. The equivalent
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: to this card from last year's class was, or I
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: guess it would be two years ago. Now was Victor
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: women Yama, the equivalent to this sold. Did you want
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: to know how much the Victor women Yama version of
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: this card sold for?
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: $ 5.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: 1 million. That's insane to me. So updates on a
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: story we gave you in the daily dump a couple
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: of weeks back, the Cooper flag projected price is three
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: and a half million plus.
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: You taking the over under.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: I'm taking the under, well, see, I shouldn't, I shouldn't
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: take the other. I should take the over because Cooper flag,
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: he's not quite as hyped as Victor women, Yama. He's
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: not living up to the hype. quite the same way
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: that Victor women Yaba, but it's close.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: I'll say I would take the under just because he
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: smashed between Wemby and the AJ and Darren Peterson that
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: they're just so close together. I wonder if that decreases
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: the value.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: I'm going to start. I'm going to start buying my
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: way into these, these boxes of cards with the Utah
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: jazz stuff to try to get the Darren Peterson one
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: of one.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: I'm probably not going to do that with the AJ
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: to box. Although I bet I could sell that card
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: for a pretty penny to like Ryan Smith or something.
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: By the way, the owner was offered the owner of the,
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: the one of one Cooper flag card. He was offered
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: a lot of money by the Dallas Mavericks to just,
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: they wanted to buy the card, I guess, to put
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: it in the stadium or something. I don't know what,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: like if you're the franchise, you have the player. You like,
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: why do you need the card of the player? You
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: have the player. Why are you buying his collector cards?
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: But anyway, the Dallas Mavericks gave him like a pretty
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: fancy offer. And he said, no, and he's putting it
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: up for auction. It says, let's see here. A Paul
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: skeins version of the same card fetched $ 1. 1 million last year.
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: That that's reasonable.
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: $ 1 million for a card.
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: That's a heck of a lot better than five. I'd see.
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: This is why these headlines are why the card collecting
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: just fascinates me because I cannot imagine. I mean, obviously
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: I'm 23 and college student broke as can be. I
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: cannot imagine spending a thousand dollars on a card, much
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: less millions of dollars on a card. Like it just,
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: That level of hobby is is crazy.
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: Here's another crazy thing. So the Victor Wimbanyama, it was
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: a Panini prism black card. Okay. Sold for $ 5. 11 million
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: in a private sale via this same auction site. Fanatics collect.
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: All right. It's the most ever spent on the Wimbanyama card.
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: It's the fourth best. It's the fourth most ever spent
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: on a basketball card, which means there's been three cards
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: that someone paid more than $ 5 million for. It's the
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: 11th most expensive sports card ever. 10 people have paid
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: more than $ 5 million for a single sports card. That's
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: crazy to me. Previous to that one being sold, the
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: most expensive Victor Wemba Yama card that had ever come
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: out was... $ 860, 000. So you more than five X on
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: the Victor Wimben Yama, the second one that rolled around
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: that big. So if you're, if you're a Cooper flag fan,
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: if you're a Cooper flag believer, you think that there's
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: probably significant upside to this one in this auction.
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Just insane to me.
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: If you see that, that, that is the crazy thing
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: is the person who's buying this for three and a
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: half million dollars probably is thinking that they can get
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: They're doing this so that they can sell it for
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: $ 7 million five years down the road.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: I will say this. I'm all for people spending their
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: money how they want to spend their money. But if
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: you spend $ 5 million on a trading card, you should
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: make yourself donate another $ 5 million to charity or something.
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: See, the Andrew Peterson Foundation is open for business. Helping
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: Andrew Peterson's all around the ESPN radio station.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: This is specifically for Andrew Peterson's who also work on
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: the Utah ESPN radio affiliates.
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: That's a very narrow focus of that charity, Andrew.
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: It can, it can be used in other ways for
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: Andrew Peterson's all around the station.
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: So I'm going to, I'm going to see if I
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: can follow this fanatics collect auction that's happening. And we'll
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: see if we, if we can get the final number
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: on the, Cooper flag card. Also pulling one of these
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: cards is equivalent to winning a lottery. So that's another
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: reason why card collecting might become either more appealing or
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: more problematic, depending on who you are. That's the daily
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: dump here on the Sean O'Connell show brought to you
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: by our friends over at Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: We've got a PGA tour leaderboard update for you next. Andrew,
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: that's you. Did James tell you? When we do the
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: PGA Tour leaderboard updates, you have to tell us what
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: the leaderboard looks like.
- 1:31:26Speaker 5: Oh, that'll be interesting.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: Are you aware of this?
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: I was not aware of this.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Well, now you are. You got a commercial break to
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: figure it out. The Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: Updates are brought to you by Uintah Golf. Unlock your
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: game at Golfdom by Worldwide Golf. New low prices on
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: Ping G440 woods and irons. The G440 driver delivers faster
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: ball speeds. along with game-changing forgiveness, and is now $ 170
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: off at Uintah Golf locations all up and down the
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: Wasatch Front and online at Worldwide Golf. All right, let's
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: give this a shot. What does the leaderboard look like
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: at the Tour Championship?
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: So we've got the leaderboard pulled up on the PGATour.com.
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: It says that Cameron Young is in first at Minus eight.
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: Tied with Minwoo Lee. So they're both tied for first.
- 1:32:24Speaker 4: Then we've got four players tied at third. Jacob Bridgerman.
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: Sam Burns. That's a difficult name. Akshay Bhatia.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Akshay Bhatia. Okay.
- 1:32:36Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: That'll sneak up on you. That'll get you. That's minus seven.
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: It's ironic that I'm doing this given that the highest
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: level of golf I've ever played is Wii Golf.
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: Okay. So this is lovely because... I am also not
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: a golf guy, right? Like at some point you're still
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: young enough that it's fully acceptable for you to not
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: be a golf guy yet because your body is young
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: and you could play other sports, right? When you get
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: to my age, everyone's just like, dude, golf, that's the
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: only thing you have. You have to play golf. You
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: have to golf. And I'm just like, I, I guys, I,
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: I like to go out to the golf course with
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: my friends so I can hang out with my friends.
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: But I'm a terrible golfer. I'm the worst golfer that
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: you will ever find. And as such, I have a
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: hard time being in love with watching golf.
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:33:25Speaker 8: So.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: We always do this where I throw the leaderboard updates
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: to James or whoever's behind the glass, because that person
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: is always more of a golf person than I am.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: But right now we have two non golf guys.
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: I think here's the thing is I think you're more
- 1:33:40Speaker 4: of a golf guy than I am. I've never even
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: been out to a course.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: Like I went to top golf once and I actually won.
- 1:33:48Speaker 4: This is the funny story.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: You didn't.
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: I did.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: And here's why I don't know how to swing a
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: golf club. I was with guys that were just, swinging
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: stuff all over the place and just sending it way
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: out there. I had this, like, Charles Barkley-type golf swing
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: where I was, like, right before the ball, made sure
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: I hit it, and just flung it off.
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: And I, like, it went to, like, the closest hole
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: every time. The other guys are just swinging away, and
- 1:34:12Speaker 4: they're missing. I was like, wow, I am by far
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: the worst golfer with the best score here.
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: They're hitting for distance and missing the target, and you
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: were just playing for average.
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: I just wanted something.
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: I can appreciate that.
- 1:34:27Speaker 6: Anyways.
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: So cam young and Min Woo Lee sitting at the
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: top of the leaderboard. Look, all of you out there
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: listening are better golfers than me and an answer. So
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: get to your local, you into golf outlet, go to
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: worldwide golf.com and unlock your game. New low prices on
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: the ping G four 40 woods and irons, $ 170 off.
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: That is, well, it tells you two things. If it's
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: $ 170 discount, that is an expensive club. That thing has
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: a lot of technology loaded into it. So it's going
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: to improve your golf game, but you also kind of
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: can't afford to let $ 170 discount run away from you.
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: So do it now, head to you into golf and
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: tell them OC sent you. And you can also tell
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: them Andrew sent you and neither of us will be
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: joining you on the golf course anytime soon.
- 1:35:22Speaker 9: Right?
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: Absolutely not.
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: I will be joining. So I told you guys, this
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: was going to happen currently at my house. If you
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: went to my backyard right now, you would smell a
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: delightful Hickory and cherry pellet mix on my Traeger at
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: this moment is a big old 18 and a half
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: pound brisket. All right. Also And I know that this
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: isn't everyone's bag, is an eye round, a beef eye
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: round roast, okay? Also on the smoker right now. Of course,
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: the brisket, a little bit of black pepper, a bunch
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: of salt, both sides. Hopefully that bark is setting up
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: nicely right now. On the eye round, I was able
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: to put a little mustard base down. I have this
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: also a Traeger rub that is... It's like a truffle
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: butter type flavor, and I layered that stuff on there.
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: Very excited to, when the show is over in an
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: hour or so, to head home, to take that thing off,
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: to throw it in the oven. I'll probably put it
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: in the cooler, actually, because I'm taking it down to
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: my buddy's house. Put it in the cooler, let it
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: rest for a couple hours. And then right around 4.30,
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: I'm going to be slicing into this bad boy, and
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: we're going to be enjoying some delightful brisket. All because
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: I now have a neighborhood butcher I can get prime
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: cuts of meat from that are not loaded up with antibiotics,
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: they're not loaded up with hormones. I'm talking, of course,
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: about Southern Steer, brand new partner here on the Sean
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: O'Connell Show. 1705 North Redwood Road down in Saratoga Springs,
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Dan and Aubrey Gunther, are the brains behind this operation.
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: It is a family business. They got, you know, nieces, nephews, grandkids, kids,
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: everyone in the clan is working down at Southern steer

- 1:37:24Speaker 2: my bag, chicken, poultry, pork, elk. Maybe you want some

- 1:37:59Speaker 2: three meals for under $ 60, everything I need, mains, sides, sauces, rubs,
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: give me all of it. They've already got them for you.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: They can prepackage them. They send you home. You throw
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: it on the grill. You throw it in the air fryer.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: You throw it in the oven, and dinner is taken
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: care of. It is a one-stop shop for all things meats,
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: all things dinner. Head down to Southern Steer. 1705 North
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs and tell them OC sent you.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: Get yourself loaded up for the tailgate week zero this weekend,
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: week one. You got less than a week. You have
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: six days to be prepared. Get down to Southern Steer
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: and do it right now. Hour three begins next on
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show with JT Wistersell. He's here in
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: studio to talk Utes. It's Utah's number one sports talk,
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. We haven't had a good
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: quality airing of grievances for several weeks now because I've
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: been gone so many of these Fridays. So get your
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: texting fingers ready and air your grievances at 877-353-0700. JT
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: Wistersell here in studio with us, locked on Ute's podcast,
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: publisher of Ute Authority over at 247 Sports. Welcome in.
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: How are you, sir? Hold on. We got to get
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: his mic on. Fired up here. Try again. How about now? Yeah,
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: there he is.
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: There's JT. I was complimenting the studio. It's a nice studio.
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: It's a very nice studio.
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: We got a little Britton Covey jersey hanging right behind me.
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: Got a couple bobbleheads over there, including the late, great
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: Steve Klauke. We miss Klauke. That red on red on
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: red helmet is my favorite Utah helmet ever. Really? It's
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: my favorite one.
- 1:39:43Speaker 8: I like the, was it 2019 hand-painted helmets they did
- 1:39:46Speaker 8: when they just throttled UCLA?
- 1:39:47Speaker 5: If you remember those.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: Which ones were those?
- 1:39:50Speaker 8: I forgot exactly. They looked a little Ohio State-ish off
- 1:39:53Speaker 8: the top of my head.
- 1:39:54Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:54Speaker 8: But those were my personal favorite. Obviously, the U.S. Salt
- 1:39:57Speaker 8: Lake ones were great, too. I don't think they've announced
- 1:39:58Speaker 8: what we're doing with the hand-painted ones this year yet, though.
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: Not yet. Not yet. The guy who does, or who
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: has done, Armando, who's done the hand-painteds, he's now, like,
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: the best in the business in every school is having
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: him do their hand painted. Um, I've been following him.
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: He's doing the King of Mardi Gras two lane ones
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: this year. They're having a hand painted for that are
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: a Mardi Gras theme for two lane. And it is
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: the 50th year, I think of the blue, the Smurf
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: turf at Boise state. So he did a, an homage
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: on the helmet. It's painted like Smurf turf, very subtle,
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: but really cool for Boise state. And that one actually
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: made it into the NCAA football game, that helmet, that
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: special edition helmet. So fingers crossed that we get another
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: great hand painted from the university of Utah. I, I
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: think they gave us the announcement on what like the
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: stadium theme is going to be like where red, where black,
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: where whatever. And usually I think the open date, that
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: might be the hand painted date. We'll see.
- 1:41:06Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: Anyway, to more important things, I started the show today.
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: fired up ranting pretty hard about an article that look,
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: this is what happens when you're just, Oh, so close
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: to football season. You don't have any real football to
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: talk about yet. Our guy, Jason Pataki, who does an
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: excellent job for the salt lake tribune caught up with
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: some former players. And I think there's six that are
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: cited in the article who have made claims that they
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: were pressured into playing while they were injured. at the
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: university of Utah. And this was of course, in the
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham tenure. And there are various accounts of whether
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: or not they were threatened to like with the loss
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: of a scholarship. The, the one sentence is they, they
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: said they would take away my scholarship or put somebody
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: above me on the depth chart. Yeah. That's what happens
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: when you're not playing anyway. And I was like, look,
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: I don't like the timing of it. I don't like
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: The general sort of piling on notion of trying to
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: dig up everything that was bad about the Kyle Whittingham
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: era now that he's gone. I feel like it's a
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: bad reaction that we're all having somewhat collectively on different
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: levels to his absence. But I know you read the article.
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: I know you took a look at it. What are
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: your thoughts on what came out in the Salt Lake
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: Tribune today about players being pressured to play while injured?
- 1:42:33Speaker 8: This is a college football problem across the country. This
- 1:42:36Speaker 8: isn't a, Oh my gosh, this is just a Utah.
- 1:42:39Speaker 8: I have family members that have told me whether it's
- 1:42:42Speaker 8: swimming or various other sports, they felt pressure to play. So,
- 1:42:45Speaker 8: and this happens at every level. So yes, it's out there.
- 1:42:49Speaker 5: It's Utah.
- 1:42:49Speaker 8: It's players putting their names on it, which is also very,
- 1:42:52Speaker 8: very interesting. A couple remained anonymous, but this happens everywhere
- 1:42:56Speaker 8: where you have guys that basically are going to try
- 1:42:58Speaker 8: to put a bandaid over it to push through and play.
- 1:43:00Speaker 5: You're going to have players that want to do that and, Yes.
- 1:43:02Speaker 8: It is unfortunate in instances where players probably should sit
- 1:43:05Speaker 8: out that this happens, but this does happen everywhere. This isn't,
- 1:43:08Speaker 8: Oh my gosh, I can't believe Kyle Winningham did this.
- 1:43:11Speaker 8: And every other college athletic department is never doing anything
- 1:43:14Speaker 8: like that. This happens everywhere. So I will see what
- 1:43:16Speaker 8: happens under the Scali era. I know Utah is trying
- 1:43:18Speaker 8: to move away from certain things like this. That's the
- 1:43:21Speaker 8: reporting in here too, that we're hearing. So we'll see
- 1:43:23Speaker 8: what happens. As I said, I read this and I
- 1:43:24Speaker 8: was like, oh yeah, this is how, this is what
- 1:43:26Speaker 8: happens across everywhere in college athletics. Just interesting to see
- 1:43:30Speaker 8: the players put their name on it. I know Van
- 1:43:32Speaker 8: Fillinger's mom, I think they had the audio of like
- 1:43:34Speaker 8: a doctor visit in there too. So it's extensive, it's deep,
- 1:43:37Speaker 8: but it wasn't shocking to me because as I mentioned,
- 1:43:39Speaker 8: I've heard many stories like this from other college athletes
- 1:43:42Speaker 8: at various levels.
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: I want to say, I'm not putting words in JT's
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: mouth here. I want to say this. I, FOTU said,
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: they threatened to take away my scholarship. I have a
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: really hard time with this. I have a really hard time.
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: This is Tevita FOTU, not Leckie FOTU. This is Tevita FOTU,
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: who had a disappointing run at the University of Utah.
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: He kind of underperformed in a lot of areas of
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: football in his life that made it so his path
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: to the University of Utah was not as direct as
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: had to do the Juco thing to get grades and
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: all that kind of thing. And that's neither here nor there.
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: A lot of guys do that. Some of the great
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: Utah football players have come through the Juco ranks. Garrett
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: Bowles and Starr and all these guys have come through
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: the Juco ranks and ended up being unbelievable players. They
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: threatened to take away my scholarship. Now, this is something
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: I would like to get a little bit more robust
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: of a conversation about, a little bit more significant of
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: an investigation on, because... There's a tacit agreement in the
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: older version of college football that your scholarship was good
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: for four years. Now we know that's not the case
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: with the transfer portal because, Hey, we want you here. Great.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: And then the next, you know, transfer window rolls around. Hey,
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: actually we want another guy to have your scholarship. We
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: think you should go now players, as far as I'm aware,
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: and this is every school all over the country. I
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: don't know of a single instance in which a coach
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: has said to a player, you no longer have a
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: scholarship here. I'm taking it away from you. And that
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: player staying at their school. Right. And that player like
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: testing that out and saying, Oh really? I'm on the team.
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: I'm under scholarship right now. Yes. You're encouraging me to transfer.
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: I don't want to, you're going to take away my scholarship.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: I have a really hard time believing that like Luther
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: Ellis or Lewis Powell came up to, to Vita photo
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: and said, we're going to take your scholarship away. I
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: don't want to call a young man, a liar. I'm just,
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: we all, when we feel victimized and we feel like
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: we're on the wrong end of a conversation or we're
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: on the wrong end of some kind of treatment, we
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: have a tendency to exaggerate. We have a tendency to embellish.
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: And even if they said something to the effect of
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: your own scholarship, you need to play. you could interpret
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: that as, oh, you're saying if I don't play, then
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: I'm off scholarship. I don't know, but I have a
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: really hard time just taking it face value that coaches
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: were going around threatening to take away guys scholarships with
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: any level of seriousness, maybe during the play, like you
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: screw up, you've, you've, you get a pet, a stupid penalty.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: We're going to take your scholarship away. Like whatever. I
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: just have a hard time with this JT because these are,
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: I mean, These are legal documents. These scholarship offers to
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: tell a kid, well, if you're, you're not going to
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: play through that rolled ankle, then I'm going to take
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: your scholarship away. I have a hard time with that one.
- 1:46:51Speaker 9: I agree.
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: I think it's a lot.
- 1:46:52Speaker 8: And as you kind of mentioned too, there's different variations
- 1:46:54Speaker 8: and degrees of this stuff of, Hey, a guy might
- 1:46:56Speaker 8: be somewhere for four years. And then he plans on, Hey, Oh,
- 1:46:59Speaker 8: I have my 50 or I want to spend it
- 1:47:00Speaker 8: at this school. And the school has other plans because
- 1:47:02Speaker 8: that player hasn't performed. I know of a player who
- 1:47:05Speaker 8: was at an sec school that he went through his
- 1:47:07Speaker 8: four years. He was a top 300 recruit. he was
- 1:47:09Speaker 8: a disappointment. He thought that he was going to be
- 1:47:11Speaker 8: able to continue there. The SEC coach that came in
- 1:47:13Speaker 8: there was, had only been there for a year. And
- 1:47:15Speaker 8: he basically said, Hey, you know, we're not going to
- 1:47:17Speaker 8: do that. We're going to have, we're going to go
- 1:47:18Speaker 8: in another direction and have this poppy open up.
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: So you do see it happen.
- 1:47:21Speaker 8: But once again, that was something, what they do, they
- 1:47:23Speaker 8: fulfilled the four-year obligation as well. If we talk about
- 1:47:25Speaker 8: with some of these scholarships too. So yeah, I have
- 1:47:27Speaker 8: a hard time with it too. I totally agree with
- 1:47:29Speaker 8: what you're saying. I just look at these instances, these situations,
- 1:47:31Speaker 8: like These are big, major things. So, I mean, the
- 1:47:34Speaker 8: title of the article itself is, right, is the former
- 1:47:37Speaker 8: Utah football players say they felt pressure to play through injuries.
- 1:47:40Speaker 8: That's what we talked about last time. That happens everywhere.
- 1:47:43Speaker 8: I just have a really hard time seeing these coaches
- 1:47:46Speaker 8: going up to guys being like, do this or we'll
- 1:47:48Speaker 8: revoke your scholarship. I mean, we've gotten to talk to
- 1:47:50Speaker 8: a lot of these coaches, too. And, you know, we
- 1:47:52Speaker 8: also hear about what a great family culture Utah has.
- 1:47:55Speaker 8: If this is how they are operating with everyone. Is
- 1:47:57Speaker 8: that the case? I don't think so. And that's where
- 1:47:59Speaker 8: this is also hard because a lot of these guys
- 1:48:01Speaker 8: are disgruntled players. It's not like, oh, this Utah legend
- 1:48:04Speaker 8: who had a great career, and then he's going back
- 1:48:06Speaker 8: and looking and saying, hey, I felt pressure to play
- 1:48:08Speaker 8: through this injury. It's a lot of guys who didn't
- 1:48:10Speaker 8: probably have quite the career they wanted to, and now
- 1:48:12Speaker 8: you look back and see and make these comments, and
- 1:48:14Speaker 8: I hear what they're saying, but at the same time,
- 1:48:16Speaker 8: some of this stuff just doesn't add up with other
- 1:48:18Speaker 8: aspects we know about this Utah football program.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Look, we have to be fair to everyone here. And
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: the correct thing to state is that Utah football, specifically
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: the Kyle Whittingham era of Utah football did have an
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: issue with handling not only injuries, but the, I think
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: more importantly, the narrative around injuries and, the cam rising situation,
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: you look no further than that, right? Cam rising is
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: one of the three best quarterbacks to ever play at
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: this school. I don't know that the next time we're
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: going to get cam rising, saying nice things about Utah
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: football or saying anything about Utah football, because his experience
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: was compromised by that whole situation. He felt a little
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: bit betrayed. He felt a little bit thrown under the
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: bus because he was trying to get his leg, right?
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: It wasn't happening at the pace And Kyle Whittingham was
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: trying to hide, you know, the starting quarterback being injured
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: from the media. And so this narrative perpetuated for literally
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: a whole season. Like he might be available this week.
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: He might be available this week. Hey, maybe we'll see
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: him this week when Cam knew and everyone knew. And
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: he was kind of, you know, he had the gag
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: order put on him. You're not going to tell people
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: that your knee was totally destroyed and that you're not
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: going to play this year, whatever. Like, so yes, the
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: previous staff deserves criticism. about the way they handled injuries
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: and the narrative around injuries, six players talking about, Hey,
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: I was pressured to play football when I was hurt
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: is it's not news. I mean, that's, that's, I love Jason,
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: but tacky of the, the, the stuff in here, the sensationalized, Hey,
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: you know, The doctor said I could miss. And then
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: the coach said I couldn't. Well, coaches don't get to
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: supersede doctors anymore in college football. If this was an
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: article from the 1980s and somebody said, yeah, the doctor
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: said I shouldn't play, but coach made me. All right. Ultimately,
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: like these decisions come down to, yes, coach wants you
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: to play. That's always going to be the case. If
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: you're not physically able to, a doctor has to stop
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: you from doing it. They can't like they're risking their
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: licenses and things like that. If they're And if they
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: were wrong about how severe an injury was, I suppose
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: there's a gray area there, but I just have a
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: really hard time with the framing of a lot of this.
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: And more, more importantly, the timing of everyone saying now
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham is a villain. Now we hate Kyle Whittingham.
- 1:50:42Speaker 2: So let's show everyone what a bad guy he was
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: and how he forced me to play when I was hurting.
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: He didn't care about player safety. You as a fan
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: do not care about player safety. So pretending otherwise is silly.
- 1:50:54Speaker 5: That's a great point.
- 1:50:55Speaker 8: And Yeah, the Whittingham part of this is just what
- 1:50:57Speaker 8: makes it, and I understand he's not here anymore, so
- 1:50:59Speaker 8: maybe that's why the players feel like, okay, now we
- 1:51:01Speaker 8: can come out and talk about it. But Kyle Whittingham
- 1:51:04Speaker 8: did a lot of great things for this university, and
- 1:51:07Speaker 8: the reason that Utah is the type of program where
- 1:51:10Speaker 8: they're at the point where fans feel slighted that Kyle
- 1:51:12Speaker 8: Whittingham would go to Michigan, even though we know a
- 1:51:14Speaker 8: lot about the whole exit and everything that even happened there.
- 1:51:17Speaker 8: But the fact that fans even feel the fact that
- 1:51:19Speaker 8: they have a right to feel slighted in their eyes
- 1:51:21Speaker 8: that someone would choose Michigan over Utah shows how much
- 1:51:25Speaker 8: Kyle Whittingham did for this football program, did for this university,
- 1:51:28Speaker 8: elevated them to the heights that they are at now.
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: So it's just really strange. I mean, we're a week
- 1:51:33Speaker 5: away from kickoff, as you mentioned, too.
- 1:51:34Speaker 8: So the timing of all this is really strange, too.
- 1:51:37Speaker 8: And yeah, it's unfortunate that we're not kind of focused
- 1:51:39Speaker 8: on more of the game, the team next week. And instead,
- 1:51:42Speaker 8: we're hearing from disgruntled players, and it's just another thing
- 1:51:45Speaker 8: in the Whittingham era, at least on the exit. I
- 1:51:47Speaker 8: actually said this on the radio earlier this week, Sean.
- 1:51:49Speaker 8: I think this is one of the messiest exits we've
- 1:51:51Speaker 8: seen from a legendary head coach, and stuff like this
- 1:51:54Speaker 8: only piles onto it.
- 1:51:56Speaker 5: Now he's going to be remembered.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: That's probably why the biggest problem I have with it
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: is because there's a low-hanging fruit situation here where if
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: I say, if I throw a Whittingham name into anything
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: right now, people are going to have to, because it's
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: polarizing very right. And I don't think Kyle Whittingham should
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: be a polarizing figure at all in Utah football. I
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: I've been on record saying that we joked and we
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: had this tongue in cheek thing for the, a couple
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: of weeks after he was gone, we treated him like Voldemort.
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: I said, he, who shall not be named because we
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: were talking more about wit for three weeks in January.
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: Then we talked about anything else and he was already
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: at Michigan. Right. And we're still doing this. Like this
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: Utah football team under Morgan Scali with all these questions
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: and all these great players returning, both of those things
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: are true. They're playing a game in six days. And
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: we're talking about Kyle Whittingham again. That's my problem. That's
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: the issue I have. And I don't begrudge Jason Bataki
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: or anyone else. Who's a big J journalist reporting what
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: they think is a story. But I, my umbrage is
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: with the fact that I think this is a story.
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: I it's not, If you go to BYU and you
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: ask every player who has ever had a bump or
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: a bruise or an injury, whether or not they felt pressure,
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: negative or positive or good or bad, to get back
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: on the field, the true answer is yes. If you
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: go to USC, the true answer is yes. If you
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: go to Oklahoma, every coach wants their best players on
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: the field. And one of the most difficult things, the
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: most difficult decisions that coaches have to make is... figuring
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: out what percentage of my starter is still better than
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: my backup. In this case, I keep using Van Fillinger
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: because he's the headline name from this story. He's your
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: leading sack man in 2024. He started off the season
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: on an absolute tear. He finished the season with six sacks.
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: Five of those six were the first three weeks of
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: the season, right? That's what we're talking about here. He
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: got hurt, and he tried to play through it, maybe
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: because of pressure from the coaches, maybe because of pressure
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: from his own self, whatever he tried to play through it.
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: And at some point, a decision probably needed to be
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: made that the backup was better than a 50% van
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: fillinger or a 75% van fillinger. It's one of the
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: hardest things that coaches have to do. They don't want
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: to have to do it. They want the best guy
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: out there. They want the best guy playing. And so
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: sometimes they make the wrong decision. They let the starter
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: who's heavily compromised play instead of a healthy backup play.
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: That is something that is more worth criticism to me
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: than pressuring a player to be out there.
- 1:54:43Speaker 8: Do you remember the 2024 Utah-Arizona State game, the final
- 1:54:46Speaker 8: game that Cam Rising ever played?
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: I was there. I filled in for Sly on the sidelines.
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: Sly was in the Pac-12 booth, and I got to
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: come out of the bullpen, and I was working the
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: radio sidelines in that game. And I was down on
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: the field on what snap number two, when cam rising
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: got rolled up on and couldn't walk the rest of
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: the game. And that was a failure. Like that is
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: something we can be critical of. That was a failure
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: by this coaching staff to be accountable to the other
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: 10 guys on the offense and the other 11 starters
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: on the, on the defense and everyone else who played
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: in that game. They were like, we're riding with cam rising,
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: even though he's not good.
- 1:55:28Speaker 8: Does he, didn't he might've given them a better chance
- 1:55:29Speaker 8: to win though, than Isaac Wilson for the rest of
- 1:55:31Speaker 8: the season?
- 1:55:31Speaker 5: What was the playoff beat?
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: Speaker 2, Cam rising was immobile in that game. He
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: couldn't step into his throws every ball. I mean, they
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: had a chance to win the game. If it wasn't
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: for the pick play, they win the game. You remember
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: the penalty?
- 1:55:48Speaker 5: That's right.
- 1:55:48Speaker 2: Where Pittman was called for the illegal block, the crack
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: block or whatever. And it was ruled a pick play.
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: If that doesn't happen, that play goes for a touchdown
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: and they win, right? You barely, barely squeak by in
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: that one, if not for that penalty. But despite the
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: fact that you had a heavily compromised quarterback, he could
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: not complete passes. And because the narrative had built up
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: to be this huge monster surrounding the program for years,
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: for two years, right? When is Cam rising back? When
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: is Cam rising back? When is Cam rising back? Cam's
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: got to play. Cam's got to play. Cam's got to play.
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: Everyone felt like, look, Cam's got to play. Cam's our guy.
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: We're riding with Cam. It was clear at halftime that
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: he could not play. And Kyle Whittingham said in the
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: post game, we asked Cam, he said he wanted to go.
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: Cam rising is never going to tell people. I don't
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: want to play a game for sure, because everyone had
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: been building this narrative around him, cashing his NIL checks,
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: not actually wanting to be on the field.
- 1:56:56Speaker 5: These guys hear stuff. They try to mute it out.
- 1:56:59Speaker 5: They try to to plug their ears on it.
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: But he had been basically, he'd gone from being the
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: most popular pro the popular player in the program to
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: escape goat for some of the programs problems because he
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: was injured and people didn't realize how injured to when
- 1:57:15Speaker 2: he's back, they were like, Oh yeah, he doesn't even
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: want to play. He's not tough. He's not working hard
- 1:57:21Speaker 2: to rehab. That's what he's in that Arizona state game
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: on one leg. Knowing he's a bad player at this
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: point because he can't throw and he can't run. Those
- 1:57:31Speaker 2: are the two things he was good at. And the
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: coaching staff said, do you want to play? Of course,
- 1:57:38Speaker 2: he's going to say yes. There's no other answer for
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: a player. If I ask Van Fillinger, right, we go
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: back to the 2024 season. that I think he's alluding
- 1:57:48Speaker 2: to in this article, I was pressured to play. They
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: said I should take six weeks off three weeks later.
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: They're like, get yourself back on the field. If I
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: ask him in week three, do you want to play?
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: It's your choice. Are you going to play.
- 1:58:03Speaker 5: Van?
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Please come on the show and let's talk
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: about this.
- 1:58:08Speaker 5: JT.
- 1:58:08Speaker 8: Do you think he's saying, no, I don't want to play.
- 1:58:10Speaker 8: I think he was probably trying to be like, you
- 1:58:12Speaker 8: know what? I can try to be out there and
- 1:58:13Speaker 8: do it for my team. And then now, as he
- 1:58:14Speaker 8: looks back on it and goes, okay, wait a minute.
- 1:58:17Speaker 8: Had I taken that year in red shirt and then
- 1:58:19Speaker 8: come back, probably have a better year rather than, as
- 1:58:21Speaker 8: you said, feasted against the bad competition. And didn't end
- 1:58:24Speaker 8: up that way. Things are always different in the heat
- 1:58:25Speaker 8: of the moment. And then you can look back as
- 1:58:27Speaker 8: you get further removed from stuff. So that's where it's
- 1:58:28Speaker 8: really tough. As you mentioned, this is what van is
- 1:58:30Speaker 8: saying now, but if we could go back in that time,
- 1:58:32Speaker 8: in that moment, most college football players, especially with just
- 1:58:35Speaker 8: the dedication and everything it takes to get out onto
- 1:58:37Speaker 8: the field, they want to play every opportunity they can,
- 1:58:39Speaker 8: especially if it means helping their brothers win a game.
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: It's a, it's a bad look for an individual and
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: it's totally understandable. I said this in the first segment
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: of the show, when I was a walk-on at the
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: university of Utah, who felt like he was getting the
- 1:58:50Speaker 2: sour end of every stick, right? If you come to
- 1:58:54Speaker 2: me two years later as a reporter from the Salt
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: Lake Tribune, is Kyle Whittingham a good coach? Does he
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: treat his players fairly? I'd have been like, no. And
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: here's 12 examples why my sorry, walk on ass wasn't
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: treated properly. You know what I mean? I was disgruntled
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: when I left the program because I thought I should
- 1:59:11Speaker 2: have been given a better opportunity than I ever got
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: or that I ever earned in the eyes of the coaches.
- 1:59:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:59:17Speaker 2: I have since come to grips with the reality that like,
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: it wasn't going to happen because I didn't do things
- 1:59:21Speaker 2: the way that I should have in order to maximize
- 1:59:23Speaker 2: those opportunities.
- 1:59:24Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:59:25Speaker 2: But you have regrets. You look back on it. I
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: think that if we had the same conversation with Jalen
- 1:59:33Speaker 2: Glover and Miki Sukutaraga and Van Fillinger and Michael Pittman,
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: all these guys, if we had these conversations with them
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: five years from now, they're going to be a little
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: bit different. If we have them 10 years from now,
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: they're going to be a little bit different again right now.
- 1:59:47Speaker 2: it's easy for those guys to look back and say, yeah,
- 1:59:50Speaker 2: I got screwed by a coaching staff who told me
- 1:59:53Speaker 2: I needed to play while I was hurt. Dude, you
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: have four years to play college football. If you're not
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: out there on the field, you're not playing college football.
- 2:00:04Speaker 2: And when you're working in a warehouse somewhere, or you're
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: sitting at a cubicle in an office and you're going like, Oh,
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: that was pretty cool. When I had a play on
- 2:00:12Speaker 2: a broken ankle, but I just I heard 50,000 fans
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: cheering my name. I just, I don't know. It, the
- 2:00:20Speaker 2: whole thing bothers me that again, you and I should
- 2:00:23Speaker 2: be sitting here six days away from the games, kicking off,
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: talking about our expectations for this number for that number.
- 2:00:33Speaker 2: What does the Idaho game actually look like? And instead
- 2:00:35Speaker 2: we're revising history and figuring out whether or not the
- 2:00:39Speaker 2: coaching staff was too mean to the players.
- 2:00:41Speaker 5: It's dumb. It is, and like you said, it's unfortunate.
- 2:00:44Speaker 5: I mean, heck, Idaho actually plays tonight, by the way.
- 2:00:46Speaker 8: Idaho plays tonight, so it was actually Utah's opponent is
- 2:00:49Speaker 8: in action tonight, and obviously there's a lot, as you mentioned, too,
- 2:00:51Speaker 8: you could get into and talk about this Utah team,
- 2:00:53Speaker 8: but instead we're focusing on disgruntled players, most of whom,
- 2:00:57Speaker 8: I mean, actually almost everyone is named in this article,
- 2:00:58Speaker 8: with the exception of maybe Van, didn't make a major
- 2:01:00Speaker 8: impact at Utah, I'd say.
- 2:01:01Speaker 5: I mean, Mickey was okay at defensive end.
- 2:01:03Speaker 8: That was one of the rare examples of them moving
- 2:01:05Speaker 8: into tight end. Usually when they change guys' positions, that works.
- 2:01:07Speaker 8: Didn't work perfectly in Mickey's case, too, so really unfortunate
- 2:01:10Speaker 8: how this all ended up, and Yeah, we're almost there
- 2:01:12Speaker 8: to game, so then we can start focusing on that stuff.
- 2:01:14Speaker 8: But very interesting timing on all this. Let's prognosticate a
- 2:01:17Speaker 8: little bit. Like you said, Idaho is in action tonight. Look,
- 2:01:20Speaker 8: I'm not going to ask you, does Utah win this game?
- 2:01:22Speaker 8: They better damn well win the game.
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: But when we have a conversation next Friday, what is
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: a success for Morgan Scali's first regular season game as
- 2:01:34Speaker 2: a head coach? What is going to be an indicator
- 2:01:37Speaker 2: of good health for this program based on a result
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: against Idaho?
- 2:01:41Speaker 8: Yeah, Utah won against Cal Poly 63-9, so you get
- 2:01:44Speaker 8: another Big Sky opponent coming into your house this year.
- 2:01:46Speaker 8: I think you have to hold them under 20 points.
- 2:01:49Speaker 8: I think anything more than that's a disappointment. And honestly,
- 2:01:52Speaker 8: I think any first-half touchdowns you could even argue are
- 2:01:54Speaker 8: maybe a disappointment, barring one wild and crazy play. I
- 2:01:59Speaker 8: think Utah, honestly, a big success is probably a 50-point
- 2:02:02Speaker 8: win for them. Idaho won four total games last year,
- 2:02:05Speaker 8: only two of those coming against Big Sky opponents. And
- 2:02:07Speaker 8: they second year the head coach. So I think they'll
- 2:02:09Speaker 8: be a little better. I like their quarterback at the
- 2:02:11Speaker 8: FCS level. They have solid FCS linebackers. But what did
- 2:02:14Speaker 8: I just say? FCS level. This is powerful for a reason.
- 2:02:17Speaker 8: I think Utah should win this one big. I think
- 2:02:18Speaker 8: a successful game for the Utes in this one should
- 2:02:21Speaker 8: be a 50 point win. I don't I think we
- 2:02:23Speaker 8: should see Brandon Rose in this game.
- 2:02:24Speaker 5: That's a success to me. If Brandon Rose gets in
- 2:02:26Speaker 5: the game.
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: OK, I like that, actually. It would be nice to
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: see Brandon Rose back out there. You know, he's got
- 2:02:31Speaker 2: a live arm.
- 2:02:33Speaker 5: It's fun.
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: I want five different players to score touchdowns against that.
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: That happens for sure. It's got it, right?
- 2:02:39Speaker 8: I mean, way Sean got in last year, Bert Ficklin
- 2:02:41Speaker 8: had some big plays last year, damp here. I'd be
- 2:02:43Speaker 8: shocked if it, we didn't have, I said, Utah should
- 2:02:46Speaker 8: absolutely hit 50 in this game to me. I think
- 2:02:48Speaker 8: they're that talented and we should be feeling great about
- 2:02:50Speaker 8: all the questions, the offensive line, defensive line, everything should
- 2:02:53Speaker 8: be awesome for Utah for this game.
- 2:02:54Speaker 2: That's a success.
- 2:02:55Speaker 9: All right.
- 2:02:55Speaker 2: Utah insiders brought to you by mountain home services. Do
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: you have any grievances you want to air? Because we're
- 2:03:01Speaker 2: going to take a break. We're going to go back.
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: We're going to air grievances.
- 2:03:03Speaker 8: Hearing grievances right now. I mean, honestly, I'm, I'm fired
- 2:03:06Speaker 8: up to be in studio with you. Glad we got
- 2:03:07Speaker 8: Utah football next week. And I'm actually a little bummed.
- 2:03:10Speaker 8: This is our last week. Zero next year, the college
- 2:03:14Speaker 8: football season. all kicks off week one, all the games
- 2:03:16Speaker 8: at the same time. I kind of like the week
- 2:03:18Speaker 8: zero thing. I know we will always want a little
- 2:03:19Speaker 8: better matchups, but I think it's kind of fun. Like
- 2:03:21Speaker 8: the Dublin game next year is just kind of buried
- 2:03:23Speaker 8: amidst the week one slate. I wish they'd move week
- 2:03:26Speaker 8: zero back and have it be kind of this thing
- 2:03:28Speaker 8: where we get our taste of a little bit of
- 2:03:30Speaker 8: football rather than it all just coming at once in
- 2:03:32Speaker 8: full bore.
- 2:03:32Speaker 5: So tiny grievance there.
- 2:03:34Speaker 2: I actually think the scheduling thing is going to be
- 2:03:37Speaker 2: up in the air sooner than later because if we
- 2:03:41Speaker 2: expand the college football playoff and the coaches get their way,
- 2:03:45Speaker 2: They want the playoff to begin like conference championship week.
- 2:03:48Speaker 2: And that would potentially push week zero to being week one.
- 2:03:52Speaker 2: And maybe what we call week minus one right now
- 2:03:55Speaker 2: would be week zero, whatever. We might start college football
- 2:03:59Speaker 2: in mid August. If these coaches get the schedule that
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: they want. So we'll stay on top of all of it. JT,
- 2:04:05Speaker 2: thanks for coming in studio.
- 2:04:06Speaker 5: Great being here.
- 2:04:07Speaker 2: That's JT Wister. So check him out at Utes authority,
- 2:04:11Speaker 2: the locked on Utes podcast. Airing of grievances is next, 877-353-0700.
- 2:04:19Speaker 2: Get it off your chest. Tell me what's on your mind,
- 2:04:21Speaker 2: sports-related or otherwise. Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:04:25Speaker 2: You're listening to.
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:04:37Speaker 5: The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.
- 2:04:45Speaker 5: I got a lot of problems with.
- 2:04:53Speaker 2: You people. You're going to hear about them.
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: 877-353-0700.
- 2:04:57Speaker 2: The time for airing of grievances is now right here
- 2:05:00Speaker 2: on Utah's number one sports talk. I got a lot
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: of problems with you people. So we found out that
- 2:05:08Speaker 2: one of our favorite Utah jazz beat writer, Sarah Todd
- 2:05:13Speaker 2: has passed through the, the crucible of a layoff in
- 2:05:18Speaker 2: sports media. This is just, unfortunately everyone who's worked in
- 2:05:21Speaker 2: the business for any amount of time has experienced this.
- 2:05:24Speaker 2: They downsize, they lay off, they restructure, you know, I've
- 2:05:29Speaker 2: had four shows canceled now and, You just hope that
- 2:05:33Speaker 2: there's greener grass on the other side. Sarah Todd was
- 2:05:37Speaker 2: really good to us. Sarah Todd, we had a great
- 2:05:39Speaker 2: time talking Utah Jazz with her. I will say this.
- 2:05:43Speaker 2: My grievance is not even with a business having to
- 2:05:46Speaker 2: conduct layoffs because I know that's just part of things sometimes,
- 2:05:50Speaker 2: and that would be the easiest grievance to air here.
- 2:05:53Speaker 2: My grievance is, and I'm very serious about this part,
- 2:05:57Speaker 2: There are people, and online is a place where we
- 2:06:00Speaker 2: all show the worst version of ourselves sometimes, but there
- 2:06:04Speaker 2: are people celebrating an individual who has a family losing
- 2:06:12Speaker 2: their job. My grievance is with you. 877-353-0700. If you
- 2:06:18Speaker 2: hate my radio show, don't listen to it. Don't celebrate
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: if I ever lose this job, though. I got mouths
- 2:06:30Speaker 2: to feed. I got a family. You got a family.
- 2:06:33Speaker 2: I will never celebrate anybody losing their job and being
- 2:06:37Speaker 2: put on the unemployment line and trying to figure out
- 2:06:39Speaker 2: if they should apply for unemployment insurance or can I
- 2:06:42Speaker 2: land on my feet? Can I stay in this field
- 2:06:44Speaker 2: or can I not stay in this field? I'm questioning
- 2:06:47Speaker 2: whether my work was ever good in the first place.
- 2:06:50Speaker 2: If you've ever been laid off or fired, you know
- 2:06:53Speaker 2: it's a terrible experience, right? If you don't like the
- 2:06:57Speaker 2: way that Sarah Todd covers something, don't read her stuff.
- 2:07:00Speaker 2: Move on with your life. If you don't like the
- 2:07:02Speaker 2: way that Jason, but tacky I was writing articles about,
- 2:07:06Speaker 2: about the Utah football team right now. Just don't re
- 2:07:10Speaker 2: don't click on his articles. Don't root for someone to
- 2:07:13Speaker 2: lose their job ever, ever, ever. That is bad karma
- 2:07:18Speaker 2: for you and everyone in your bloodline, man. Don't do that.
- 2:07:23Speaker 2: I was First of all, I mean, you can't keep
- 2:07:25Speaker 2: everybody happy. So when inevitably this show gets canceled, I
- 2:07:31Speaker 2: don't know when it'll happen. Hopefully not anytime soon. There
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: will be people that are like, oh, good riddance. He
- 2:07:36Speaker 2: sucked anyway. Grievance preemptively. Don't root for people to lose
- 2:07:41Speaker 2: their jobs. Don't celebrate when people do lose their jobs.
- 2:07:44Speaker 2: It is an awful thing to be a grown adult
- 2:07:48Speaker 2: and you're making money and you got health insurance and
- 2:07:50Speaker 2: you're feeling good. And then you don't. You don't have that.
- 2:07:54Speaker 2: That sucks, man.
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: 877-353-0700.
- 2:07:56Speaker 2: Air your own grievances. on the Sean O'Connell show. Andrew,
- 2:08:02Speaker 2: it's your first time on the airing of grievances. Do
- 2:08:04Speaker 2: you have any particular grievances you'd like to air?
- 2:08:07Speaker 5: Well, so is this, is this sports grievances or just life?
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: Any life, any life grievance, anything you want. That's the
- 2:08:12Speaker 2: beauty of the airing of grievances. You can just throw
- 2:08:15Speaker 2: it against the wall and see if it sticks. I
- 2:08:17Speaker 2: have a grievance. This might be a weird one, but
- 2:08:24Speaker 2: I have a one-month-old kid. Congratulations.
- 2:08:28Speaker 5: Boy or girl? He's a boy.
- 2:08:30Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 2:08:30Speaker 5: He's awesome. Best thing that ever happened.
- 2:08:32Speaker 2: It's the best thing in the world.
- 2:08:33Speaker 4: Quite literally couldn't be happier. My grievance comes with diapers.
- 2:08:38Speaker 4: And it's not with changing the diapers. It's with the
- 2:08:40Speaker 4: diaper themselves.
- 2:08:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:08:41Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:08:42Speaker 4: The transition from the newborn diaper to the.
- 2:08:47Speaker 4: The size one diaper, that is my grievance because he's
- 2:08:52Speaker 4: too big around his belly for the newborn.
- 2:08:55Speaker 5: So whenever he poops, it blows up the top.
- 2:08:57Speaker 10: Yep.
- 2:08:58Speaker 5: If he wears that newborn.
- 2:08:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:09:00Speaker 4: But his legs don't quite fill in the spot on
- 2:09:03Speaker 4: the size one.
- 2:09:04Speaker 5: So now it comes out the way now it comes
- 2:09:06Speaker 5: out the other side. In fact, driving up, we, my.
- 2:09:10Speaker 4: Wife was being picked up by her mom and she
- 2:09:14Speaker 4: brought the baby and, and they, So we drove up
- 2:09:17Speaker 4: to the studio.
- 2:09:18Speaker 5: We parked.
- 2:09:18Speaker 4: Her mom came, got her kid, just completely blew out
- 2:09:22Speaker 4: in the car. And we're just like, we're like, you
- 2:09:26Speaker 4: got to get bigger legs, kid. But my grievance is,
- 2:09:29Speaker 4: how is there not going to get that baby doing
- 2:09:31Speaker 4: some squats? How do we not have diapers that fit
- 2:09:36Speaker 4: the belly and the legs?
- 2:09:38Speaker 5: That's my grievance. It's a great grievance, Andrew.
- 2:09:42Speaker 2: Oh, that's a phenomenal grievance because every parent has experiences.
- 2:09:46Speaker 2: It is like the blowout is just the least convenient,
- 2:09:49Speaker 2: most disgusting, terrible thing. You got to have two extra outfits.
- 2:09:53Speaker 2: Anytime you leave the house with an infant because of that.
- 2:09:56Speaker 2: And you're right.
- 2:09:57Speaker 5: The big diaper.
- 2:09:59Speaker 2: All right. The big diaper corporations. They're not helping you. No,
- 2:10:03Speaker 2: you know, it's, you know, it's crazy. As your kids
- 2:10:05Speaker 2: get older, you'll find that like, They get big. They
- 2:10:10Speaker 2: get to a certain point where it's just like, okay,
- 2:10:12Speaker 2: this diaper doesn't even hold all the pee. If they
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: do like a normal amount of pee, it's like overloads
- 2:10:19Speaker 2: the absorbency of the diaper. Like, what are we doing here?
- 2:10:22Speaker 8: Right.
- 2:10:23Speaker 2: So, yeah, diaper company's grievance against you. I'll echo that
- 2:10:27Speaker 2: for you.
- 2:10:28Speaker 5: Yeah, 100%.
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: All right. That's a great grievance. I think I have
- 2:10:33Speaker 2: a fix, though, for you. Go super old school. Cloth diapers.
- 2:10:37Speaker 5: Let's see it.
- 2:10:39Speaker 4: I'm, I'm, I quite, does that actually like, is that
- 2:10:41Speaker 4: actually a good move? Cause then you have to wash
- 2:10:43Speaker 4: the diaper.
- 2:10:44Speaker 2: Yeah, probably.
- 2:10:44Speaker 5: It's probably not. It's disgusting. Like cloth diapers.
- 2:10:49Speaker 2: Obviously like your parents probably wore cloth diapers when they
- 2:10:51Speaker 2: were kids.
- 2:10:52Speaker 5: Probably.
- 2:10:52Speaker 2: I don't know. Your parents are probably pretty young.
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: Well, no.
- 2:10:56Speaker 5: So I'm the, I'm the seventh kid.
- 2:10:57Speaker 2: You're the seventh kid?
- 2:10:59Speaker 5: Out of nine. So like my, my dad's in his sixties.
- 2:11:03Speaker 5: You got nine kids in your family? Yeah. Seven boys,
- 2:11:08Speaker 5: two girls.
- 2:11:09Speaker 2: That's incredible. I love a big family story. Nine kids
- 2:11:13Speaker 2: is big. Even for Utah, that's a big family.
- 2:11:15Speaker 4: So my parents are actually like, my dad's technically a
- 2:11:19Speaker 4: baby boomer.
- 2:11:20Speaker 5: He's in his 60s.
- 2:11:21Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. So yeah, your parents wore cloth diapers when
- 2:11:26Speaker 2: they were kids. So talk to your grandparents or talk
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: to your dad's older siblings and see if they ever
- 2:11:33Speaker 2: had to change a cloth diaper. See if that fixes
- 2:11:35Speaker 2: your problem.
- 2:11:35Speaker 5: Yeah, we'll see.
- 2:11:36Speaker 2: My parents are just cheap. And they passed that on
- 2:11:39Speaker 2: to me. Uh, my youngest brother is now, well, he's
- 2:11:43Speaker 2: nine years younger than me. So he's, he's 33. Okay.
- 2:11:49Speaker 2: And when he was little for like a two week period,
- 2:11:54Speaker 2: my parents were just like, ah, these diapers are too expensive.
- 2:11:56Speaker 2: We're going cloth diapers. And we had cloth diapers and
- 2:12:00Speaker 2: safety pins because I guess that's what something that existed
- 2:12:05Speaker 2: back then. And for like two weeks, my youngest brother,
- 2:12:09Speaker 2: I was nine years old helping my parents change diapers
- 2:12:12Speaker 2: and they were cloth diapers.
- 2:12:13Speaker 5: That's horrific.
- 2:12:15Speaker 2: So disgusting. So maybe don't actually do that. 877-353-0700. Sam
- 2:12:24Speaker 2: says previous grievance update. Door-to-door salesman, different person this time,
- 2:12:30Speaker 2: stops by and tells me, They noticed it looks like
- 2:12:32Speaker 2: I had the original siding on the house.
- 2:12:36Speaker 3: Me.
- 2:12:36Speaker 2: Oh, you're a noticer. Did you happen to notice the
- 2:12:40Speaker 2: sign points at the prominently displayed? No soliciting sign. The
- 2:12:44Speaker 2: salesman admitted they did see it, but they were not
- 2:12:47Speaker 2: selling anything. Just giving me some information. I laughed at
- 2:12:52Speaker 2: him and closed the door. My point being, you have
- 2:12:53Speaker 2: been warned that I don't want to be disturbed in
- 2:12:55Speaker 2: my own home. If you ignore it, I can turn hassle.
- 2:12:59Speaker 2: I can intern hassle you back. Correct, Sam.
- 2:13:02Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:13:04Speaker 2: If you have a no soliciting sign, you are telling
- 2:13:08Speaker 2: anyone who's knocking on your door to give you information
- 2:13:11Speaker 2: that you didn't ask for to sell you something you
- 2:13:13Speaker 2: didn't ask for, that they should expect a frosty, dare
- 2:13:18Speaker 2: I say, even a hostile reception. If you have no
- 2:13:22Speaker 2: soliciting on there, that is like, it's like beware of dog.
- 2:13:26Speaker 2: If there's a beware of dog sign on the fence
- 2:13:29Speaker 2: and I hop the fence and the dog bites me,
- 2:13:32Speaker 2: it's my fault.
- 2:13:34Speaker 5: If there's no.
- 2:13:35Speaker 2: Soliciting on the window or on the door and I
- 2:13:38Speaker 2: knock on the door and you're rude to me or
- 2:13:41Speaker 2: you insult me or you close the door in my face,
- 2:13:44Speaker 2: that's on me. You got the warning. Don't ignore the
- 2:13:48Speaker 2: warning signs. That's what a no soliciting sign is. And
- 2:13:53Speaker 2: I know that there are a lot of door-to-door salespeople
- 2:13:56Speaker 2: Here in Utah, so they're like probably mixed reactions to this,
- 2:13:59Speaker 2: but the no soliciting sign is the polite way for
- 2:14:03Speaker 2: us who don't want to be solicited to tell you to,
- 2:14:06Speaker 2: you know, skedaddle. Get on your way. All right. Jordan
- 2:14:14Speaker 2: on the text line airing this grievance. Stickers or labels
- 2:14:18Speaker 2: that are supposed to be temporary, but for some reason
- 2:14:21Speaker 2: it requires rubbing alcohol or a razor blade to get off. Absolutely, yes.
- 2:14:27Speaker 4: Every time I try to get the sticker off my
- 2:14:29Speaker 4: windshield for my oil change replacement.
- 2:14:32Speaker 5: Yes.
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: That one they make hard because they don't want it
- 2:14:36Speaker 2: to come off. You're trying to get it off because
- 2:14:39Speaker 2: they always put it up in the corner and it
- 2:14:41Speaker 2: distracts you or whatever. They want you to notice it.
- 2:14:44Speaker 2: But my car tells me.
- 2:14:45Speaker 4: Like, it has the mile countdown to when I need
- 2:14:48Speaker 4: that oil change.
- 2:14:49Speaker 9: See?
- 2:14:49Speaker 2: Those stickers have become, they're rendered obsolete by newer cars
- 2:14:54Speaker 2: because they count you down to your oil change. And
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: they tell you, my car right now is on, like,
- 2:15:00Speaker 2: minus 63 days from an oil change. I need an
- 2:15:02Speaker 2: oil change. This one, multiple grievances. People filming themselves eating
- 2:15:10Speaker 2: or commercials of people eating makes me want to eat
- 2:15:13Speaker 2: that particular thing even less. Okay, is this true? Even
- 2:15:17Speaker 2: with like the old Carl's Jr. burger commercials that featured
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: like very attractive women eating those burgers?
- 2:15:25Speaker 4: I think it works for if it's a professional commercial,
- 2:15:28Speaker 4: but if it's like the Instagram reel of that random influence, no,
- 2:15:32Speaker 4: I can't do that.
- 2:15:33Speaker 2: My problem with the Instagram influencer like eating a meal
- 2:15:36Speaker 2: is they all have the same reaction. I don't believe
- 2:15:40Speaker 2: it anymore, right? Because what they do is they take
- 2:15:42Speaker 2: a bite of whatever thing it is, like the crumble
- 2:15:45Speaker 2: cookie or the the amazing bite of ramen or something,
- 2:15:50Speaker 2: and every single one of them does this thing that goes,
- 2:15:53Speaker 2: oh my gosh. They close their eyes and act like
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: they're having some out-of-body experience. I don't believe you. I
- 2:16:01Speaker 2: don't believe you anymore. I've been watching this on the
- 2:16:04Speaker 2: Travel Channel for 20 years now. You all react the
- 2:16:07Speaker 2: same way.
- 2:16:08Speaker 4: Especially when it's the same person reacting the same way
- 2:16:10Speaker 4: every time.
- 2:16:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:16:12Speaker 5: Terrible.
- 2:16:12Speaker 2: It's like, you know what?
- 2:16:13Speaker 5: Guy Fieri is.
- 2:16:15Speaker 2: trash shows, but he doesn't react the same way every
- 2:16:18Speaker 2: time he takes a bite. So we believe him still.
- 2:16:22Speaker 2: What we can't believe is that he's still wearing those clothes,
- 2:16:24Speaker 2: but we believe his reaction to the food infants that
- 2:16:33Speaker 2: cry when they're tired. You can't know Jordan. You cannot
- 2:16:38Speaker 2: air a grievance against the baby. Infants that cry when
- 2:16:41Speaker 2: they're tired. I understand all babies do this. It's the
- 2:16:43Speaker 2: one thing I have no control over. So just fall asleep, please.
- 2:16:52Speaker 5: Oh, that's so good.
- 2:16:55Speaker 2: You're right. You can't force a baby to fall asleep,
- 2:16:58Speaker 2: but you can't air a grievance against a baby for crying.
- 2:17:02Speaker 5: Oh, that's so good, Jordan.
- 2:17:03Speaker 2: Thank you. That's wonderful. Derek says secondary grievance. I don't
- 2:17:08Speaker 2: care how cheap you are. Reusable cloth diapers are disgusting.
- 2:17:11Speaker 5: Okay. Fair.
- 2:17:16Speaker 2: Okay. Here we are with another grievance. Other bicyclists going
- 2:17:21Speaker 2: too fast or reckless on trails or on roads because
- 2:17:25Speaker 2: then everybody hates bikes. Even if you are being respectful,
- 2:17:28Speaker 2: that's from Spencer.
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:17:30Speaker 2: Spencer, you're right. The bad actors in the biking world.
- 2:17:36Speaker 2: have ruined riding a bike for everyone. We, we had
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: this a couple of weeks ago when I rode my
- 2:17:42Speaker 2: bike into work and I was basically airing a grievance
- 2:17:45Speaker 2: against somebody who was just mean to me for no reason.
- 2:17:48Speaker 2: Cause I was on a bike and they were in
- 2:17:49Speaker 2: a minivan. I'm trying to obey the laws. I'm not
- 2:17:54Speaker 2: the guy who's just like, I'm also a car because
- 2:17:56Speaker 2: I'm on a bike on the road. I was like
- 2:17:58Speaker 2: trying to get out of the way and kind of
- 2:17:59Speaker 2: that kind of thing. But yeah, because there are so
- 2:18:02Speaker 2: many bicyclists who think they're better than the driver, of
- 2:18:07Speaker 2: the car or who act crazy on a trail and
- 2:18:10Speaker 2: ruin it for the hikers or run into somebody's dog
- 2:18:13Speaker 2: because they think they own the place, then all bicyclists
- 2:18:16Speaker 2: get bad reputations. In fact, this kind of factors in
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: for every group that you could ever be put in.
- 2:18:23Speaker 2: If you are the bad example of that group and
- 2:18:25Speaker 2: you ruin what people think of the group for everyone else,
- 2:18:29Speaker 2: grievance against you. Be a good example of what your
- 2:18:32Speaker 2: thing is.
- 2:18:35Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 2:18:36Speaker 2: What is your thing, Andrew? What are you? Radio producer? Dad?
- 2:18:41Speaker 4: I guess the thing everyone comes to talk to me
- 2:18:44Speaker 4: about is sports.
- 2:18:47Speaker 5: I watch sports.
- 2:18:48Speaker 2: So you're a sports media guy, right? If you're the
- 2:18:51Speaker 2: sports media guy in your group of friends... and you're
- 2:18:54Speaker 2: super arrogant about it. And you're like a, like a
- 2:18:57Speaker 2: jerk about it.
- 2:18:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:18:58Speaker 2: They're going to think that all of us sports media
- 2:19:00Speaker 2: guys are like me and are arrogant jerks. So you
- 2:19:03Speaker 2: have to be nice. Okay. You're right.
- 2:19:06Speaker 5: I should be better. I'm sorry, guys.
- 2:19:08Speaker 2: So you have to, you have to not ruin my
- 2:19:11Speaker 2: already earned bad reputation. Okay.
- 2:19:15Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 2:19:15Speaker 2: Okay. Good. 877-353-0700. If you want to keep airing your grievances,
- 2:19:21Speaker 2: I'm happy to hear from you. Another reminder, You're getting

- 2:19:31Speaker 2: whether it's a tailgate, whether it's a grill with your friends,
- 2:19:34Speaker 2: whether it's just you making a nice meal for yourself

- 2:20:54Speaker 2: to the Utah State Fair coming up September 10th through
- 2:20:57Speaker 2: the 20th at the Fair Park. ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.

- 2:21:05Speaker 2: Fair Park comes September 10th through the 20th. Four tickets
- 2:21:10Speaker 2: to the Utah State Fair next. If you can answer
- 2:21:13Speaker 2: this question at 877-353-0700. Look, Van Fillinger was a major
- 2:21:19Speaker 2: topic of conversation on the show today, and I was
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: once again hypercritical. The guy probably hates me. But let's
- 2:21:29Speaker 2: take a positive. Give me his final year with the
- 2:21:32Speaker 2: University of Utah. How many sacks did Van Fillinger have?
- 2:21:36Speaker 2: For the Utes, 877-353-0700. I will give you a family
- 2:21:41Speaker 2: four-pack of tickets. He happened to lead the team that year. Hi,
- 2:21:47Speaker 2: Spence Checketts, host of The Drive. Andrew's got to turn
- 2:21:52Speaker 2: on your mic.
- 2:21:53Speaker 5: Andrew. Hey, buddy. Hi, Andrew.
- 2:21:57Speaker 2: Andrew's done a great job today in the stead of
- 2:21:59Speaker 2: James Peterson.
- 2:21:59Speaker 5: Have I met Andrew before?
- 2:22:01Speaker 2: You have maybe met him, yes.
- 2:22:03Speaker 5: We might have passed each other in the hallways. Good
- 2:22:05Speaker 5: to see you, man.
- 2:22:06Speaker 2: Seventh of nine, so bigger family even than the Checketts.
- 2:22:10Speaker 5: Seventh of nine?
- 2:22:10Speaker 10: You're the seventh child of nine kids?
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 2:22:14Speaker 5: Congratulations for making it out alive, dog. Thank you. I'm
- 2:22:16Speaker 5: the oldest of six, so I thought we had a
- 2:22:18Speaker 5: big family.
- 2:22:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:22:20Speaker 5: What's the range? Oldest is how old?
- 2:22:23Speaker 4: He's oldest is 35 this year. Youngest is he would
- 2:22:30Speaker 4: be 15 or 16.
- 2:22:32Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:22:33Speaker 10: That's an acceptable range. Nine kids in 20 years. That's acceptable.
- 2:22:37Speaker 10: I mean, that's chaos. But at one point we had
- 2:22:40Speaker 10: five under.
- 2:22:41Speaker 5: The age of 11.
- 2:22:41Speaker 6: Holy cow.
- 2:22:42Speaker 5: You should have seen us traveling.
- 2:22:44Speaker 2: That's so cool.
- 2:22:45Speaker 5: Everyone hated us so much. Yeah.
- 2:22:48Speaker 10: Chaos for sure. So look, I've heard a little bit
- 2:22:51Speaker 10: tuned in here. They're, Um, to listen, you talk about
- 2:22:57Speaker 10: the story and I think there's some complexities that are
- 2:23:01Speaker 10: fair to acknowledge, but I feel like the wailing and
- 2:23:05Speaker 10: gnashing of teeth are coming from people that just have
- 2:23:07Speaker 10: never been in a locker room before. And I'm not
- 2:23:09Speaker 10: dismissing anything that, you know, um, probably is fair to
- 2:23:16Speaker 10: talk about and look at.
- 2:23:18Speaker 5: I played for four different coaches. I had high school,
- 2:23:20Speaker 5: a little bit of college.
- 2:23:22Speaker 10: And certainly the oldest coach I had was the one
- 2:23:25Speaker 10: that didn't have any time for us talking about a
- 2:23:27Speaker 10: sprained ankle.
- 2:23:27Speaker 5: He's like, you're fine. You're going to play.
- 2:23:29Speaker 10: And then I had some coaches that were probably all the.
- 2:23:34Speaker 5: Way on one coach.
- 2:23:35Speaker 10: It was all the way on the other side of
- 2:23:36Speaker 10: things where it's like, oh, OK, you know, you're not
- 2:23:39Speaker 10: you're in a bad mood.
- 2:23:39Speaker 5: It's all right.
- 2:23:40Speaker 3: You can go home.
- 2:23:41Speaker 10: So, you know, but the people out there, at least
- 2:23:45Speaker 10: that I've seen that are really angry. I don't know
- 2:23:48Speaker 10: that you've ever played a sport before, and I don't
- 2:23:49Speaker 10: want to be obtuse about this entire thing. On the
- 2:23:53Speaker 10: scale of, oh my gosh, and much ado about nothing,
- 2:23:57Speaker 10: where are you as somebody who played college football?
- 2:23:59Speaker 2: I'm like a half inch away from much ado about nothing.
- 2:24:02Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what I figured, yeah.
- 2:24:04Speaker 2: And look, this is an opinion-based show. This is a column.
- 2:24:09Speaker 2: I'm not a journalist, okay? I appreciate the work being
- 2:24:12Speaker 2: done by Jason, but tacky out to try to like,
- 2:24:15Speaker 2: there is something to be talked about with is the
- 2:24:18Speaker 2: communication with the coaching staff and the medical staff above board.
- 2:24:22Speaker 2: And is it proper? And is it truly in the
- 2:24:24Speaker 2: best interest of the student athlete, but also as someone who,
- 2:24:30Speaker 2: you know, never achieved anything that these guys in the
- 2:24:33Speaker 2: article achieved and would have died for the coach to
- 2:24:37Speaker 2: even give a rip, whether you're on the field or not.
- 2:24:39Speaker 5: I just have a.
- 2:24:40Speaker 2: Hard time being sympathetic because if you're, if you feel
- 2:24:43Speaker 2: like you're being mistreated, when you are treated better than
- 2:24:46Speaker 2: every single student on campus, I just don't have a
- 2:24:50Speaker 2: lot of sympathy for you. I don't have like, there's
- 2:24:52Speaker 2: just not a lot of that in me where I
- 2:24:54Speaker 2: can feel bad for college athletes, especially in this like
- 2:24:58Speaker 2: era in this modern era where there's not only scholarships
- 2:25:02Speaker 2: and incredible food but there's also cash money that sets
- 2:25:06Speaker 2: you up in life better than all of your peers
- 2:25:09Speaker 2: and most people that are out of college for ten
- 2:25:12Speaker 2: years ahead.
- 2:25:12Speaker 10: Of you and you just you brought up a point
- 2:25:15Speaker 10: that needs to be underscored because you know the longer
- 2:25:19Speaker 10: and longer you do the job and just simply the
- 2:25:21Speaker 10: older you get you have to pause for a minute
- 2:25:25Speaker 10: and question the motivation When it comes to something like this,
- 2:25:29Speaker 10: like why are these players speaking out right now? Why
- 2:25:33Speaker 10: does it feel like there are people at the U
- 2:25:35Speaker 10: that are fine speaking about Witt now that never would
- 2:25:39Speaker 10: have said anything while he was here?
- 2:25:41Speaker 5: The answer is obvious, that he's gone. And they feel
- 2:25:44Speaker 5: like they're safe to talk about it.
- 2:25:46Speaker 10: But there was one player that straight up said he
- 2:25:49Speaker 10: came back for money and didn't get any of it.
- 2:25:52Speaker 6: So.
- 2:25:53Speaker 5: how much of this is setting up.
- 2:25:55Speaker 10: For a lawsuit where it's like lost wages because I
- 2:25:58Speaker 10: was mistreated?
- 2:26:00Speaker 5: How much of this comes from players who.
- 2:26:05Speaker 10: See the players now making hundreds of thousands of dollars
- 2:26:08Speaker 10: and are looking at their situation and thinking like, if
- 2:26:12Speaker 10: I can create a narrative that money was taken out
- 2:26:14Speaker 10: of my pocket, can I hire an attorney?
- 2:26:17Speaker 5: I'm just talking about possibilities. I have no idea.
- 2:26:19Speaker 10: You just have to question what the motivation is, why
- 2:26:22Speaker 10: now Why are you coming to the table with this information?
- 2:26:25Speaker 10: I mean, the landscape of college athletics is littered with
- 2:26:29Speaker 10: guys who have tried to sue schools and the NCAA
- 2:26:34Speaker 10: in the name of lost wages because they're seeing how
- 2:26:35Speaker 10: much money these guys are making now. And some of
- 2:26:37Speaker 10: those court cases have been settled to the tunes of
- 2:26:40Speaker 10: millions of dollars.
- 2:26:41Speaker 5: It's actually worked for some of these players, right? So
- 2:26:45Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 2:26:46Speaker 10: My antennas went up, and the question I had was,
- 2:26:49Speaker 10: why are we doing this right now?
- 2:26:51Speaker 5: What's the point?
- 2:26:52Speaker 2: For me, I didn't go quite as far down the
- 2:26:54Speaker 2: rabbit hole, and I think that the obvious reason why
- 2:26:56Speaker 2: you're doing this right now is right now it's cool
- 2:26:58Speaker 2: to hate Kyle Whittingham in Salt Lake City. There's a
- 2:27:01Speaker 2: lot of people who are mega disgruntled about the exit
- 2:27:05Speaker 2: and what he took with him and the way that
- 2:27:07Speaker 2: things went down and are pointing a lot of fingers
- 2:27:10Speaker 2: at Whittingham and are now calling into question the character
- 2:27:15Speaker 2: that we used to celebrate that was kind of like
- 2:27:19Speaker 2: defining factor of Kyle Whittingham. And, and I think the
- 2:27:21Speaker 2: biggest issue I have with this whole thing is you
- 2:27:26Speaker 2: cannot celebrate and pound your chest for 20 years because
- 2:27:29Speaker 2: you have a hard nose, tough football team, and then
- 2:27:34Speaker 2: moan about six players. And you could find 106, you
- 2:27:38Speaker 2: could find six maybe over the course of that time,
- 2:27:42Speaker 2: that would say some version of what these guys are saying,
- 2:27:45Speaker 2: but you can, you can then not moan about what
- 2:27:49Speaker 2: is one of the core tenants of being a hard
- 2:27:52Speaker 2: nose football team. Yeah. You play when you're hurt. You
- 2:27:55Speaker 2: don't complain.
- 2:27:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:27:56Speaker 2: You just get back out on the field and you
- 2:27:58Speaker 2: do your thing.
- 2:27:58Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:27:59Speaker 2: And nobody ever hears about like the Cam rising situation
- 2:28:03Speaker 2: was handled wrong.
- 2:28:04Speaker 9: Right.
- 2:28:05Speaker 2: Okay. Cam rising didn't tell us for a year how
- 2:28:09Speaker 2: badly he was hurt. When he finally did, it changed
- 2:28:14Speaker 2: the entire expectation of what he should do, what he
- 2:28:16Speaker 2: should have done, how the coaching staff handled it. whether
- 2:28:20Speaker 2: he or not he should have continued to play in
- 2:28:21Speaker 2: that Arizona state game. That was so disastrous. I mean,
- 2:28:24Speaker 2: it changed everything, right? So it's not all perfect. It's
- 2:28:28Speaker 2: not all good, but give me a break. You can't
- 2:28:31Speaker 2: sit here as a Utah football fan, as someone who
- 2:28:34Speaker 2: graduated from the university as a season ticket holder and
- 2:28:38Speaker 2: be like, what I care most about is player safety.
- 2:28:41Speaker 2: And are these kids being treated right? No, what you
- 2:28:44Speaker 2: care about most is that you had a respectable football
- 2:28:47Speaker 2: team for the last 21 years. And the guy who
- 2:28:50Speaker 2: is in charge of that and the culture that was
- 2:28:53Speaker 2: rooted in his personality sometimes has a downside. And this
- 2:28:57Speaker 2: is that downside.
- 2:28:58Speaker 5: Yeah, no, that's well said.
- 2:28:59Speaker 10: And at the risk of sounding like the old guy
- 2:29:02Speaker 10: that's complaining about young people and yelling at a cloud,
- 2:29:06Speaker 10: I have a friend who has a beautiful young daughter
- 2:29:17Speaker 10: and hadn't seen her in a while. recently caught up
- 2:29:20Speaker 10: with him and asked how, how's everything going? And he's like, she,
- 2:29:25Speaker 10: she stopped going to school. Cause she, and you know,
- 2:29:28Speaker 10: she had a bout of some sort of mental something.
- 2:29:31Speaker 5: Right. And I, I, I want to stop here and
- 2:29:34Speaker 5: be very clear about one thing.
- 2:29:36Speaker 10: I think the progress that has been made about mental
- 2:29:39Speaker 10: health and the conversation around it is vital. And I,
- 2:29:42Speaker 10: I don't, I'm not saying I want it to stop,
- 2:29:46Speaker 10: but if, if we bring it into a snare, like,
- 2:29:48Speaker 10: can remember being 15 and 16 and waking up and
- 2:29:51Speaker 10: feeling anxious and not wanting to go to school and
- 2:29:55Speaker 10: not wanting to go to seminary at 6 a.m. before
- 2:29:58Speaker 10: school and feeling like this this sucks and guess what
- 2:30:02Speaker 10: my my parents told me you're you're going to school
- 2:30:06Speaker 10: so you know if you're sick like legitimately sick don't
- 2:30:09Speaker 10: get the other kids sick you stay home but if
- 2:30:11Speaker 10: you feel anxious or if you feel nervous and Learning
- 2:30:16Speaker 10: to fight through those things when you're young to show
- 2:30:18Speaker 10: up to the things that you need to show up
- 2:30:20Speaker 10: to do is a really important part of being able
- 2:30:23Speaker 10: to develop as a fully formed human. And I think
- 2:30:28Speaker 10: lost in the whole mental health is health conversation is
- 2:30:32Speaker 10: and I've I've tried to do this with my son
- 2:30:34Speaker 10: who battled some things himself in high school. You want
- 2:30:37Speaker 10: to be very sensitive to the person and the human
- 2:30:41Speaker 10: to make sure they feel taken care of. And then
- 2:30:43Speaker 10: you got to go to work. And then you have
- 2:30:45Speaker 10: to go to school. And then you have to do
- 2:30:46Speaker 10: your homework. And some days that's really, really hard. And
- 2:30:50Speaker 10: when you get up and do that, especially in the
- 2:30:52Speaker 10: days that it's really, really hard, that builds character. Because
- 2:30:55Speaker 10: when you're in your mid-30s with a mortgage and two
- 2:30:58Speaker 10: kids and a job, and you wake up one day
- 2:31:01Speaker 10: and you say, I don't feel well. Well, okay, are
- 2:31:04Speaker 10: you sick? No, I just feel off today. Okay, call
- 2:31:07Speaker 10: your boss and tell him you feel off today. And
- 2:31:11Speaker 10: so you're just not going to work. Because that's not
- 2:31:14Speaker 10: how the world works. And maybe the world is working
- 2:31:17Speaker 10: differently than it did when we grew up. But in
- 2:31:21Speaker 10: this story, there's a little bit of.
- 2:31:26Speaker 5: Entitlement, in a way.
- 2:31:27Speaker 2: Do you understand what I'm saying? I understand 100% of
- 2:31:31Speaker 2: what you're saying. And again, as someone who tried so
- 2:31:36Speaker 2: hard to live this athlete life... And like, you just,
- 2:31:40Speaker 2: you have to go through it. You have to push
- 2:31:41Speaker 2: yourself through and, and nobody ever made me fight. I
- 2:31:45Speaker 2: had people tell my parents never wanted me to do it.
- 2:31:47Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:31:47Speaker 2: Of course I chose that. And that means I chose
- 2:31:51Speaker 2: to keep training when I was injured. I chose to
- 2:31:54Speaker 2: get knocked out a couple of times, expose myself to
- 2:31:56Speaker 2: a certain amount of risk. I chose indirectly. I chose
- 2:32:00Speaker 2: the fact that I have a 90 year olds lower back.
- 2:32:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:32:04Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like all of these things.
- 2:32:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:32:07Speaker 2: I've come to grips with these choices. If you had
- 2:32:10Speaker 2: interviewed me, I said this on the show many times.
- 2:32:12Speaker 2: If you had interviewed me two or three years after
- 2:32:15Speaker 2: I had transferred away from the university of Utah, and
- 2:32:17Speaker 2: you had asked me whether I was treated fairly there,
- 2:32:19Speaker 2: I would have told you, I would have given you
- 2:32:22Speaker 2: 10 examples of how it wasn't right. I think that
- 2:32:25Speaker 2: part of it is just the maturity of realizing these
- 2:32:27Speaker 2: are all products of your own choices, Van Fillinger and
- 2:32:30Speaker 2: Jalen Glover. And these guys, no one made you be
- 2:32:33Speaker 2: a college football player. You could have walked away at
- 2:32:35Speaker 2: any time.
- 2:32:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:32:36Speaker 2: And if you had made that choice, you would have
- 2:32:39Speaker 2: walked away from the special treatment and the NIL money
- 2:32:42Speaker 2: and the scholarship and the chef Pete making you every
- 2:32:45Speaker 2: single meal and putting you on a diet plan and
- 2:32:47Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. So like if we talk
- 2:32:50Speaker 2: to these guys in five years or in 10 years,
- 2:32:54Speaker 2: their reaction to even this is going to be a
- 2:32:57Speaker 2: lot different than it is today.
- 2:32:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:33:00Speaker 10: It also makes you wonder, because the interesting part about
- 2:33:03Speaker 10: some of these players is they were part of potentially
- 2:33:05Speaker 10: the most successful five-year run of Utah football history with
- 2:33:08Speaker 10: two Pac-12 championships and two Rose Bowl appearances. And then
- 2:33:12Speaker 10: maybe Witt decided that he was just going to let
- 2:33:14Speaker 10: everybody who was hurt sit.
- 2:33:16Speaker 5: And then for two years, he had nobody to play.
- 2:33:18Speaker 10: I mean, we haven't heard really from many players that
- 2:33:21Speaker 10: were involved in the two-year cluster, you know what, where
- 2:33:24Speaker 10: they were playing Luke Batari at quarterback and they had,
- 2:33:27Speaker 10: you know, fourth and fifth string dudes all over the field.
- 2:33:30Speaker 2: There's a game in six days. We should not be
- 2:33:33Speaker 2: talking about how players that were hurt three years ago
- 2:33:37Speaker 2: felt like they were forced into service.
- 2:33:39Speaker 10: Yeah, I just find it. I find it really interesting
- 2:33:41Speaker 10: that this came out today. And look, if we just
- 2:33:47Speaker 10: bottom line this and call it how it is, we
- 2:33:50Speaker 10: all know that there's no love lost with certain people
- 2:33:53Speaker 10: that are running the athletic department and the coach at Michigan.
- 2:33:55Speaker 5: We all know that.
- 2:33:57Speaker 10: So whether it's we're going to file a lawsuit against
- 2:33:59Speaker 10: Freddie or whether it's a, hey, we're fine providing access
- 2:34:02Speaker 10: so players can spend something negative about Kyle.
- 2:34:07Speaker 5: It's not that hard to add two plus two here.
- 2:34:11Speaker 2: Anyone who knows Van Fillinger, text me his number, 877-353-0700.
- 2:34:14Speaker 2: What did you do today? I want to get him
- 2:34:15Speaker 2: on the show.
- 2:34:16Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:34:21Speaker 2: Because Van Filger, he signed up to ride a bull.
- 2:34:25Speaker 2: Did you know? I did not know that.
- 2:34:27Speaker 5: That kid was a beast when he was younger, man.
- 2:34:28Speaker 5: He was good.
- 2:34:30Speaker 2: He was a beast when he was older. He was
- 2:34:31Speaker 2: a beast when he played through these injuries. He's a monster.
- 2:34:34Speaker 2: You look at him now, because I watched his little
- 2:34:37Speaker 2: video of like, hey, I'm going to do this thing
- 2:34:39Speaker 2: on social media. I'm going to ride this bull. He
- 2:34:41Speaker 2: looked scarier than he did when he was a player.
- 2:34:43Speaker 5: Yeah, he was a really talented young man.
- 2:34:47Speaker 2: But you can't really sob story about how your body
- 2:34:50Speaker 2: is broken and then go ride a bull voluntarily.
- 2:34:53Speaker 5: Hard to argue with that.
- 2:34:55Speaker 2: Stay tuned for the drive. I'm sure Spence Chickens will
- 2:34:58Speaker 2: have more on this. ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
