Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_02]: Hey friend, thank you so much for listening once again today.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_02]: How long has it been since you got disciplined?
- 0:09[SPEAKER_02]: Since you were taking it to the wood shed.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_02]: I understand, I know that's in a popular concept or even in situation these days, I get it.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_02]: But Dr. Paul Avine is going to preach a message from many years ago that still should get us right in the heart, something that really should tweak our conscience, something that I think the Holy Spirit is in today.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: something that I think you and I, if we were to pay attention, could result in so much less English.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_02]: So many less tears shed.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: I've been in counseling sessions.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_02]: I've talked to young people and the elderly.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_02]: when they look back with their great own decisions made, when God has, quote, unquote, taken them to the wood shed.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_02]: I hope you're not experiencing that right now, but even if you are today's message is for you.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_02]: Dr. Paul Avine is going to conclude a message titled, horses and mules from many years ago.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: You and I, we need to wrap our minds and wrap our hearts around what God has for us.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for listening.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_02]: Don't go anywhere.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_02]: Tune your ears with a soft heart to what Dr. Paul has for us today.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the pain was terrible because I was having to cough all the time, see?
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: And when I would cough, it'd jerk my body.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: Well, this incision wasn't just a whole stickin' out of there.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: And I would cough in and hurt so terribly.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: It felt like a guy sitting a straddle in me with a meat cleaver, a grin in that meat.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: And every time I'd cough he'd go wham.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that meat cleaver, I don't own my belly.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, man, it was terrible.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: They couldn't even walk up and touch the edge of the bed.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: They wanted to move me to a private room.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: They couldn't even move the bed.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: Couldn't rule me out of there.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: It was dreadful pain.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: So they started to give me pain killers in my arms.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: to both of my arms are swelled way up.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: And the pain was, young folks, I never knew about 14-year-old kid could suffer as much as I suffered.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: It was awful.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: That went on for about two weeks.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Other complications said it, and it was dreadful pain.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: It was agonizing pain day and night.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: The owner of the leaf I got was when I'd give me a shot, I had a really for a little while, and then it painted come right back.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: Well, one night, I saw two guys walk in the room and they walked over to this guy next to me.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: I noticed that they had been one of these screens on it.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: They walked on there and yanked the sheet off of him.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: When you got picked him up by the back of the neck and the other guy picked him up by the heels and they had a basket there.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: It was about six foot long.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: The only time I've ever seen a basket like that.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: A long narrow basket that just picked him up and dropped him cropped into that basket.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I was so full of dope.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't realize what was going on.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: I was trying to figure out what's going on around here.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: And then they put a little basket and straighted up.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: And then I was so I'm carrying him out.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then finally, don't let me.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: That will boy die.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what he died with?
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: Same thing I had.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: Only I had a worse than he did.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: And he died with it.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: Boy, I began to do some taking.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: Lord, that will boy die with pneumonia.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't even have a hole in his side.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: And after about two weeks, they finally pulled that tube out.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: And it started taking some of the stitches out.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: And this congestion began to let up.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: And they let up on the shots and my mind cleared up.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: I want to tell you what I did.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: When my mind began to clear up so that I could think straight, the first thing I did was to have a prayer meeting.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: And I didn't need my mother.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: They were saying, you better get right with God.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I didn't need aid off my brother.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: They're either telling me to get right with God.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I didn't need my pastor.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: Brother, I knew I wasn't right with God.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I knew I wasn't right with my parents.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: And flat on my back, looking straight up.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: Or I'm gonna tell you, God got my attention.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't a smart alley now.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't smart now, boy.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: I hadn't had the tar knocked out of me.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: And the Lord had a real detail, I thought of me.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: You don't like when a dad takes his son to the wood shed or about one guy said, my dad take me to the wood shed and then the wood I shed tears.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: Another kid said, when my dad had a real peace sleeves, I knew there'd be spots on the sun and that night the sun wouldn't feel like setting.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what God was doing with me on folks.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: He had me in the wood shed.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: And flat on my back, I had a prayer mate and I said, now Lord,
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: I know what I've been doing wrong.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: I've lied to my mother, but where I've gone.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: I told my mother, I went night, I was going to the Boy Scout camp, and a bunch of us went to the movie instead.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: I knew I'd done wrong.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, Lord, I know what I've done wrong.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, I know I've been going the wrong places.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I know I lied to my mother.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, Lord, if I don't die here.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, another thing, God was talking to me by going to a Christian high school, and I backed off from that.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: I should have gone there year before, year before I went, but I didn't.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: So I said, now Lord, if I don't die up here in this hospital, this was the month of May, when next fall rules round, when September comes, I will go to that Christian high school that I believe I, that you want me to attend.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: In the case of your wondering, I didn't die up there in an hospital.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: I finally made it.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: I went back to my job and I had to work.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: I had to work.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: Ben, over like this.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't straighten up for, well, I guess a couple of months.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: It really worked me over, you know, with a surgery and all this stuff.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: When Fall came, about the third week of August, I said to the guys, I was working for, I said, you have to get somebody to take my place.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: I said, because I'm leaving.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: They said, well, you go on.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: I said, I'm going to a Christian high school out in Iowa.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: You know what they did?
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: Made fun of me.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: They said, you're not going to a high school to answer.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I am.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: They said, we got better high schools right here in Moline, Illinois.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: That might be, but I'm not going to any high school, Moline, Illinois.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going out there that one in Iowa.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: You know why I said that?
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: I was scared not to.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: Believe me, young folks, if you ever force the Lord to chastise you and to chastise you and to chastise you and to wit you, you won't get a little spanking.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: You will get what the Bible calls a scourging.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: The Lord, the Bible says, the Lord scourges every son whom he receives.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: If that child of God needs a scourging, he'll get a scourging.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: There are no spankings in the Bible.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, little spankings don't maintain anything anyhow.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: Did you ever see a mother or dad with a little, with a youngster, two or three years old, and they're unruly?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: And that says, you do again, I'll spank you.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: And finally, he goes up to Junior, or Susie, and he gives him a little walk on the behind.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: But he liked the wrestlers, you know, when the wrestlers put on their exhibition and they're going to kill this guy that's down and he jumps up and he comes right down on his chest.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's a lot of balloon.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's all fake.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: That's all phony, you know.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: And he cushions that.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: But these are other four.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: He just comes down so far.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: And so here's that or more.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: And they give this little kid a little walk on the behind.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: But they.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: They stop so that make sure it's not going to hurt Junior.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: And it doesn't hurt Junior, but it makes Junior mad.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: And then Junior gets more than he starts hollering and yelling and screaming.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: And he turns the balloon, he's going to die.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then they had to run, get a gallon ice cream real quick.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: Get him in a good humor.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: You won't get that kind from God.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: You won't get, listen, I'm going to tell you something.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: If you ever force God to whip you, you won't be mad at God for whipping you.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: You'd just be glad he quits.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Dr. Bill Rice, who passed away, who's two of them you see up there on the hill.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: He said when he was a kid, his dad, if he needed it, we're taking to the wood shed, take off his belt, and then he would give him more grip and boy, he said they go round and round and round and round and after he had been whipping on his boy for a while, the father would say, Bill, I'm ready to quit when you are.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: What do I mean?
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: That man, I'm ready to quit.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: Whip, and you, when you're ready to quit, hollerin'.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: And Dr. Bill says, man, a life-quit holiday said, I'd be willing to quit breathing if he just quit.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that would have been it.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm warning you, you'll read your Bible, and you'll read about these people, like God, chasing you, about Jonah, you read about David.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: You read about Samson.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I know by my own experience, if you ever force God to chasing you, to get your attention, you won't get a spanking, you'll get a scourgey.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: The Lord scored just every Sunday we received.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: And that word, Scourging, is the same word used in the Greek language, it's the same you were used, what the Bible says, they took the pilot delivered them to the Jews and to the Roman soldiers and they scourged him.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: Now listen, that Scourging that Jesus had was not a little spanking.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: The Romans would whip their victims until sometimes they would die.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: The Jews were allowed to get 40 stripes when they would beat a guy.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes they take a whip with three strands of leather on it.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: And they strike a guy one time, that's three stripes.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: They do that 13 times, that's 39 stripes.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: Paul said five times received a 40 stripes, save one.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: 39 stripes.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: They were even religious when they beat a guy.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: They wanted to make, they stopped at 39, let's say go beyond what the law allowed at 40.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: But that's not the way the Lord was beaten.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: He wasn't beaten by the rule, by the Jews.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's beaten by the Romans.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: And the Romans would tear him apart.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: He would, they would tear him apart.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: And when they got through with the Lord Jesus, there was horrible.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: His back was a bloody mess of quivering flesh and bone.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: And if you ever force God,
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: To get your attention, it will not be a spanking.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: It'll be a scourging like you will never forget.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: And you'll never want another one.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: You'll be scared of God, your Heavenly Father.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: You'll have a holy respect for him like you never had before.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm warning you, by my own experience, and besides what it says in the Bible, one of what you just give God your attention this morning easy way.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: And let him guide you with his eye.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: Don't wait till he puts a bit in the bridal on you and gets a fence posted, knock you down to get your attention, but let God have your attention now and become like a broken yield at horse, like a tane and broken dependable obedient horse who will do anything any time, rain or shine, hot or cold.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: If you would be that kind of a young person, you'll have a good life in the happy life, but if you don't, God says, I'll put the bridal on you.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'll get your attention somewhere, brother.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: But it'll be awful.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: Don't force God to do it.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_02]: That's my own prayer.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: What a thought we've experienced this week.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: I hope you enjoy this blast from the past.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_02]: Hearing from Dr. Paul Vene, I imagine myself there listening live as Dr. Paul preaches to hundreds and hundreds of teenagers.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I wonder what would my response have been?
- 11:28[SPEAKER_02]: Really, I can imagine what my response would be because I know what I desire my response to be today.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_02]: What has your response been?
