- 0:00So, for as long as I can remember, all
- 0:02right, my mama has coughed, okay? And
- 0:06it's a hereditary thing. Natalie and
- 0:09Davis will tell you that I cough easily
- 0:11as well. It really gets on Natalie's
- 0:13nerves, actually, when I cough. Um, but
- 0:15one of the things about my mama is that
- 0:18she coughs. And I remember this one time
- 0:21we were at a store in the mall. You guys
- 0:25know what a mall is, right?
- 0:27>> Yeah. I mean they don't have them as but
- 0:29like since co you don't really go to the
- 0:31mall right but when I was growing up
- 0:33when I was a kid the mall was the place
- 0:36to go shopping and so I was there with
- 0:39my parents in a department store in the
- 0:41mall and we got separated as that
- 0:44happens and I was walking around and I
- 0:47was looking for them and across the
- 0:50store I heard a cough and I knew I just
- 0:55knew that that was my mama.
- 0:58And so I continued to listen because I
- 1:00was separated from them trying to find
- 1:02them. I just continued to listen and
- 1:04followed the sound of the cough until I
- 1:06found her. And as I was preparing for
- 1:10the lesson tonight, it made me wonder,
- 1:13would anyone else in that store have
- 1:16recognized her just from that one sound?
- 1:20Okay, probably my dad. My daddy would
- 1:24have and both my sisters would have
- 1:26known who it was. But I doubt that any
- 1:30other person would have picked out her
- 1:32cough from the rest of the crowd. And
- 1:35why is that? Well, it's because they
- 1:39don't know her as well as I do, as well
- 1:42as my family does. For the first 18
- 1:45years of my life, I grew up hearing her
- 1:49every day. And I know her. I know my
- 1:53mama by her cough on that day in that
- 1:58mall. She didn't speak. She didn't say
- 2:02my name. She probably didn't even know I
- 2:04was looking for her. I don't even know
- 2:06if she knew that we were separated. But
- 2:08um but she didn't call my name. She
- 2:11didn't say here I am. She just coughed
- 2:15and I knew her.
- 2:18And it is an amazing thing to know
- 2:21somebody so well that you know the sound
- 2:24of their cough. But our scripture
- 2:27tonight points to a God that knows us
- 2:31and loves us even more than that. So
- 2:35let's do a quick recap in case you
- 2:37haven't been here in the past in case
- 2:38it's your first time or in case you've
- 2:40been out for a week like I was a couple
- 2:42weeks ago. And also, just so you know,
- 2:45you can find all of the past week's
- 2:47lessons on Northwest YouTube channel
- 2:50thanks to Pastor Josh. He's been filming
- 2:52them and so you can go back on there and
- 2:53catch up. That's how I caught up when I
- 2:55was gone over fall break. So, we started
- 2:58a series that Pastor Josh calls I am who
- 3:01I am. And we're looking at seven
- 3:04statements that Jesus makes about his
- 3:06identity and his mission from the Gospel
- 3:09of John. And these are seven metaphors.
- 3:12and Jesus uses them to talk about who he
- 3:15is and how he relates to us as his
- 3:18followers and disciples. So these
- 3:20statements paint a picture of who he is
- 3:22and what he came to do, but they also
- 3:26tie him directly to the way that God
- 3:29describes himself in the Old Testament.
- 3:31And this is so that Jesus's followers
- 3:34will realize that Jesus isn't just some
- 3:37human teacher, but that he's God as
- 3:40well. He's God's son. So each of these
- 3:42statements that we've been talking about
- 3:44um start with the same two words I am.
- 3:47So what was the first I am statement
- 3:50that Pastor Josh preached about? Anybody
- 3:53remember? I am the
- 3:55>> bread of life. Thank you. Very good.
- 3:57What about the second? I am the
- 4:00>> light of the world. And the third from
- 4:02last week. I am the
- 4:05>> gate for the sheep. That was one we a
- 4:07lot of us had not heard before. I don't
- 4:09know that I'd really learned about that
- 4:10one before. So this week's I am
- 4:13statement comes from John 10 11-18 and
- 4:18it picks up right where Pastor Josh left
- 4:20off last week and continues this
- 4:23comparison of Jesus and a shepherd.
- 4:27So Jesus was talking with the Pharisees
- 4:31and they were having a hard time
- 4:34believing that he was the Messiah that
- 4:36they were waiting for. Even when he
- 4:38performed miracles like feeding the 5000
- 4:41or healing the blind man, they still
- 4:44weren't sure that Jesus is who he says
- 4:47he is. And they had all these reasons
- 4:50that they were coming up with to not
- 4:52believe.
- 4:54How many times do we find ourselves in a
- 4:57similar situation
- 4:59where we've seen him work in our lives?
- 5:02We've seen him work in the lives of
- 5:05loved ones, but we still aren't sure
- 5:08that Jesus is who he says he is. We have
- 5:11a hard time trusting him. Even though
- 5:15we've seen him follow through on every
- 5:18promise that he makes.
- 5:22So what did Jesus do in scripture when
- 5:24people had a hard time understanding him
- 5:26and who he was and what he was trying to
- 5:27say? He used metaphors.
- 5:30So our scripture again, John 10, if you
- 5:33got your Bible and you're following
- 5:35along. We're going to look first at
- 5:37verses 11 through 7 uh 11 through13. So
- 5:40you can follow along. I think we're
- 5:41going to put them up here on the screen
- 5:43maybe. There you go. So these first few
- 5:46verses say, "I am the good shepherd. The
- 5:49good shepherd sacrifices his life for
- 5:52the sheep. A hired hand will run when he
- 5:56sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the
- 5:58sheep because they don't belong to him
- 6:01and he isn't their shepherd. And so the
- 6:04wolf attacks them and scatters the
- 6:06flock. The hired hand runs away because
- 6:10he's working only for the money and
- 6:13doesn't really care about the sheep.
- 6:17Okay. So, in this section of scripture
- 6:19this week, Jesus tells us about two
- 6:21types of people that are usually tasked
- 6:25to watch over sheep. And they are in
- 6:28stark contrast to each other. They are
- 6:30opposites. Okay? One is the hired hand
- 6:33and the other is the shepherd. So, let's
- 6:36look at the hired hand first, okay? And
- 6:38look at characteristics of a hired hand.
- 6:40He would be someone that just sees it as
- 6:44a gig to make money and earn money for
- 6:48himself. And so there's this there's
- 6:50this self-interest there. And that
- 6:54affects that impacts how far he's going
- 6:57to go for the sheep that he's been hired
- 7:00to care for. Okay? There is a limitation
- 7:02there to how far the hired hand will go
- 7:06in caring for the sheep. And so I was
- 7:09trying to think of like more of a real
- 7:12life since nobody here is a shepherd.
- 7:14Okay. More of a real life um idea of of
- 7:18what a hired hand would be. And so I was
- 7:22thinking, you know, if you had a friend
- 7:24that owned a like a candy store, let's
- 7:27say a candy store because we all like
- 7:28candy for the most part, right? Okay. We
- 7:30like candy. So you have a friend that
- 7:33was going to pay you to work there and
- 7:36to watch over it. And so they give you
- 7:38all of the instructions that you need
- 7:40like how to restock the candy and how to
- 7:44bag up people's purchases and take their
- 7:46payment. And this friend expects you to
- 7:51take care of his or her store because
- 7:54that's what you've been hired to do. And
- 7:57from the outside, you're going to be
- 7:59doing the same things that the owner
- 8:02would be doing if he or she were there.
- 8:05But then all of a sudden, a burglar
- 8:08comes in with a gun to rob the candy
- 8:11store.
- 8:13You would be out of there as quick as
- 8:16you could, no matter how much you like
- 8:18candy or how much you liked your friend,
- 8:20the owner. I love Miss Maggie. She's one
- 8:23of my best friends. If I was watching
- 8:24over her candy store and a gunman came
- 8:27in, I'd be out, okay, in a second.
- 8:29Sorry. Love you, but I'm gone. Okay.
- 8:33with a hired hand. There's a point at
- 8:36which they would say like, "I've had
- 8:38enough or I'm out." But then in our
- 8:41scripture, Jesus talks about the good
- 8:44shepherd. And who is the good shepherd?
- 8:48>> Jesus. It's himself. That's right. What
- 8:51Jesus is saying here is that no one is
- 8:55going to care about the sheep more than
- 8:57the shepherd does. The hired hand tends
- 9:01to the sheep for money, for personal
- 9:03gain, not because he loves the sheep,
- 9:07not because he has this, you know,
- 9:10unending affection and love for the
- 9:13sheep. So at the first sign of danger,
- 9:15he would be gone. Anybody else watching
- 9:18over the sheep would be out of there in
- 9:19a second if a wolf came and the hired
- 9:23hand's life was in danger. But not
- 9:26Jesus.
- 9:28Just like with the shepherd, there is no
- 9:31limitation to Jesus's love, no
- 9:33self-interest. In fact, the scripture
- 9:36says that he would sacrifice his life
- 9:39for the sheep. In the same way, no other
- 9:44love that we will ever experience is
- 9:49like that of our good shepherd of Jesus.
- 9:53He is the only one that loves everybody
- 9:57here perfectly and without any kind of
- 10:00limitation to it.
- 10:03So now let's go on to verses 14 and 15.
- 10:06And they say, I am the good shepherd. I
- 10:09know my own sheep and they know me just
- 10:12as my father knows me and I know the
- 10:14father. So I sacrifice my life for the
- 10:18sheep.
- 10:20So Jesus is saying in these verses, he's
- 10:22not simply doing a job. He has unlimited
- 10:26love for us to the point that he's going
- 10:29to lay down his life for us.
- 10:32He says in these verses, I am the good
- 10:36shepherd. He didn't say, I work as a
- 10:39shepherd. Meaning that it's a job like
- 10:42the hired hand. It is who he is. It is
- 10:47part of his identity.
- 10:49And what that means is that determines
- 10:52our identity as well. Now, I don't want
- 10:56you guys to get caught up in the fact
- 10:58that in these verses that we are the
- 11:01sheep in this metaphor. Okay? Don't get
- 11:03caught up in that fact because these
- 11:05verses don't focus on the
- 11:07characteristics of the sheep. What it
- 11:10what they focus on is the characteristic
- 11:13of the good shepherd and that's who
- 11:16gives us our identity.
- 11:19Sometimes I have to kind of just sit
- 11:22back and really appreciate the fact that
- 11:26Jesus allows us to have a relationship
- 11:30with him. That he wants to he wants to
- 11:32know me. He wants to know you and he's
- 11:35going to protect us. And he's the God of
- 11:38the world. He wants to have a
- 11:40relationship with us like he has with
- 11:43his father. He knows us by our name, by
- 11:47our physical appearance. He knows us by
- 11:50our cough. Okay? He even knows how many
- 11:54hairs we have on our head. Matthew 10:30
- 11:58through32 says, "But not a single
- 12:00sparrow can fall to the ground without
- 12:02your father knowing it. And the very
- 12:04hairs on your head are all numbered. So
- 12:07don't be afraid. You are more valuable
- 12:10to God than a whole flock of sparrows."
- 12:13We have a shepherd that loves us so much
- 12:16that he would fight off any danger for
- 12:18us and he will never leave us. My
- 12:22favorite verse and the one that I cling
- 12:24to when I'm going through a hard time is
- 12:26Exodus 14:14. And that is where Moses
- 12:29says, "The Lord will fight for you. You
- 12:33need only to be still."
- 12:36So based on these verses that we're
- 12:37looking at, if we if we we're looking at
- 12:39verses in John 10, if we go back in John
- 12:429, the Pharisees are questioning whether
- 12:45Jesus really was the Messiah. And they
- 12:48told him, they told Jesus that they were
- 12:51disciples of Moses. So they they knew
- 12:54that God would fight for them because
- 12:55Moses had told them that. They had been
- 12:58taught this all the way back in Exodus
- 13:00from Moses's time. From the very
- 13:02beginning, they knew that God was on our
- 13:05side, watching out for us and fighting
- 13:08off the danger if we would just trust
- 13:10him. And so what Jesus was trying to do
- 13:12is help them to see that he was the son
- 13:15of God. He was the Messiah. And all
- 13:17these things that they had already
- 13:18believed and they already knew to be
- 13:19true and they had believed for
- 13:21generations were true for him as the son
- 13:24of God as well.
- 13:26So, the scripture from last week that
- 13:29Pastor Josh talked about, um, it says in
- 13:32John 10, after he has gathered his own
- 13:34flock, he walks ahead of them and they
- 13:37follow him because they know his voice.
- 13:40Okay, that's something that we read last
- 13:42week. He will walk ahead of us
- 13:46protecting us. We just have to believe
- 13:48and follow.
- 13:50But again, the scripture said they
- 13:52follow him because they know his voice.
- 13:57But how do you know?
- 14:00How can you expect to hear the voice of
- 14:03the good shepherd if you don't know him?
- 14:07If you don't know his voice. A lot of us
- 14:09think we know exactly who Jesus is
- 14:12because we've grown up in church and we
- 14:14know all the stories and we've heard
- 14:16this one again and oh my goodness, Miss
- 14:18Meredith's talking about the shepherd. I
- 14:20know. I know. I know. Okay. But a
- 14:23relationship with him is like any other
- 14:26relationship that you have in your life.
- 14:29If if you pursue it, it will grow and
- 14:33develop, but it will wither and die if
- 14:37it's ignored. So, what steps are you
- 14:39taking to get to know this perfect
- 14:41shepherd who cares so deeply about you
- 14:45that he would die on your behalf? How do
- 14:49you learn about that care? In what ways
- 14:51does he care about you? And what does
- 14:53that look like in your life?
- 14:56So, Pastor Josh spoke last week about
- 14:58learning the shepherd's voice and the
- 15:00importance of that is repeated in this
- 15:02scripture this week as well. Um, Pastor
- 15:05Josh talked about how the Holy Spirit
- 15:07can give us a supernatural ability to
- 15:10hear from God. So, that's one way that
- 15:12you can get to know him better. And
- 15:14also, you guys already know this. What's
- 15:16the main place to read about who Jesus
- 15:19is?
- 15:20>> The Bible. That's right. That's an easy
- 15:22one because it shows us who Jesus is
- 15:25through the story of his life and those
- 15:27that he encountered while he was here on
- 15:29earth.
- 15:30And then knowing so much about him will
- 15:32help bring you into that personal
- 15:34relationship with him. And then of
- 15:36course prayer, right? Prayer is another
- 15:39way to get to know Jesus and pursue
- 15:40relationship with him because he wants
- 15:42to know all about your day. He wants to
- 15:44know all about you and what's happening
- 15:46in your life. And he wants you to come
- 15:47to him with your wants and your needs.
- 15:50And there are definitely other ways to
- 15:52get to know him. These aren't the only
- 15:53ways. But my point right now is just to
- 15:56pursue him because he wants to know you
- 16:00and trust me, you want to experience his
- 16:04perfect limitless love.
- 16:08So something important that I want you
- 16:10to remember is that at some point all
- 16:13other relationships, leaders, teachers,
- 16:17parents, sponsors, friends, whoever, all
- 16:21other relationships are going to fail at
- 16:23some point in their caring of you. And
- 16:26it may not be on purpose. Um it, you
- 16:29know, we're just human. We're all human.
- 16:31For instance, I love my kids more than
- 16:34anybody else on this earth loves them.
- 16:36But I can't be alert and protect them
- 16:39all the time. I mean, I gotta sleep at
- 16:41night, right? I don't hover over their
- 16:43beds watching their every breath at
- 16:45night while they sleep, right?
- 16:48That'd be creepy. I absolutely would.
- 16:50Okay. They aren't with me all the time.
- 16:52They go to school. They go to sports
- 16:54events. They go to practices and friends
- 16:56homes. And so my ability to care for
- 17:00them has limitations.
- 17:03And you know, I get angry sometimes. And
- 17:06sometimes I speak to them harsher than I
- 17:09should or I react and sometimes I
- 17:12overreact maybe a little bit maybe to
- 17:15something that they do because I'm a
- 17:17human too out of my own you know
- 17:19personal humanness human experiences and
- 17:23I'm the person that loves them the most
- 17:26in the whole world and I still fail to
- 17:29care for them perfectly. But Jesus, the
- 17:33good shepherd, is the only one that can
- 17:38care for you perfectly and without any
- 17:41limitation. And he does. He does. All
- 17:45right. So, let's continue in our passage
- 17:46for this week. Let's go to verse 16. It
- 17:50says, "I have other sheep, too, that are
- 17:53not in this sheepfold. I must bring them
- 17:56also. They will listen to my voice, and
- 17:58there will be one flock with one
- 18:00shepherd.
- 18:02So again, Jesus is speaking to the
- 18:04Pharisees here and they believed that
- 18:08only the specific Jews were the chosen
- 18:10people of Jesus and in fact that was
- 18:14part of their national identity. But
- 18:17here Jesus is speaking about gentile
- 18:20believers which was a very radical idea
- 18:23for these Pharisees. And he is basically
- 18:27saying that these other sheep, these
- 18:29other ones already belong to him and
- 18:32that all believers belong together in
- 18:35one fold in one flock. And Jesus is
- 18:38being clear that he does not stay in
- 18:43human created boundaries of ethnicity
- 18:47that he's going to go beyond Israel to
- 18:49seek and save people. And that it's a
- 18:52worldwide mission. no one people group
- 18:56is all that Jesus is looking after. He
- 18:59tells us plainly that there will be one
- 19:02flock. And so this has implications for
- 19:05us as well. Okay. What a relief it is to
- 19:08know that there is not one type of
- 19:12person, one type of people in God's
- 19:15flock. There is diversity in the
- 19:18sheepfold. You don't have to have been
- 19:20born into a certain ethnic group or
- 19:22social class. You don't have to have a
- 19:25certain IQ or go to a specific school or
- 19:27homeschool or wear certain clothes or
- 19:31have a certain family history to be a
- 19:33part of Jesus's sheepfold.
- 19:36He wants everybody. You only have to
- 19:39trust in him as your shepherd. The flock
- 19:42is made up of all kinds of people with
- 19:46the one good shepherd. And he wants you
- 19:49there no matter of any of those other
- 19:52things. and he sacrificed his life so
- 19:55that you could join his flock. And that
- 19:58should give us confidence that we all
- 20:01have the opportunity to be in heaven
- 20:03with Jesus.
- 20:05And so as we close and the band starts
- 20:08to come up, where's my keyboard player?
- 20:12>> Okay. Oh, okay. Okay. I want us to think
- 20:14about a few things. Okay. There's a few
- 20:16things that I want us to kind of think
- 20:18about and we'll talk a little bit more
- 20:20about some of them as we go into small
- 20:21group.
- 20:22Who are the hired hands in our lives?
- 20:27Are there certain podcasters or
- 20:30musicians or content creators or
- 20:33teachers that we forget are just human
- 20:37and have limits to their care for us?
- 20:40This kind of, you know, as I was
- 20:42thinking about this part of the lesson,
- 20:44I think back there was some previous
- 20:45controversy invaring involving um Lauren
- 20:49Dagel. Y'all remember that? Um, y'all
- 20:51know who that is, right? Lauren Dagel.
- 20:53Okay, paid saying no. Uh, she is a
- 20:56popular Christian singer. And in 2018,
- 20:59she was asked on a radio show if
- 21:02homosexuality was a sin. And she
- 21:05completely avoided giving a yes or no
- 21:08answer. She just said, "I can't honestly
- 21:10answer that in the sense of I have too
- 21:13many people that I love and they are
- 21:14homosexuals."
- 21:17So, she was not being malicious or
- 21:19uncaring in any way. Okay, I want to
- 21:21make that clear. But when it came right
- 21:24down to it, she was not bold on behalf
- 21:28of her Christian faith in that moment.
- 21:31And there's nothing wrong with listening
- 21:33to her music and worshiping with her
- 21:35music or learning from other Christian
- 21:37teachers or watching YouTube shorts from
- 21:40content, you know, Christian creators.
- 21:43But we just have to remember that they
- 21:45are human and the only completely
- 21:49perfect source of truth is Jesus.
- 21:54Here's another thing to think about. Are
- 21:56we hired hands to our friends?
- 22:00Are we just there when things are going
- 22:03well and it's easy to live a righteous
- 22:05example for them? When we can benefit in
- 22:09some way from the friendship? What about
- 22:11when the going gets tough? When they
- 22:14begin making poor choices? Can we be
- 22:16bold in our beliefs even when there's a
- 22:19chance that we're going to be made fun
- 22:20of? When it's the opposite of what
- 22:24everyone around us is doing, can we lay
- 22:26down our pride and our comfort to be
- 22:30more like the good shepherd?
- 22:32And then finally, are we actively
- 22:36pursuing relationship with Christ so
- 22:39that we can hear and know his voice?
- 22:42What steps are we taking each day to
- 22:45draw closer to him?
