- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint Joseph Calasanctius, August 27 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:20Of today's feast, Don Gaspar Lefebvre writes the following. The church having just celebrated the feast of the assumption honors on this day a saint who had a special devotion to the virgin. Saint Joseph Calasanctius was born in Aragon of a noble family and from his youth showed his charity towards children.
- 0:46While studying theology at Valencia, he had to defend himself against the enticements of a powerful and noble lady and made the vow to enter into holy orders. Having become a priest, he was apprised by divine revelation that he was destined to teach and to train to piety, children, especially those of the poor. He founded in consequence the order of the poor clerks regular of the pious schools of the mother of God. Like Jesus, he let little children come to him and taught them to fear God. Wherefore the gospel repeats the consoling words of the master, whoever shall receive one of these little ones in my name receiveth me.
- 1:40What is there greater, right Saint John Chrysostom, than to discipline minds, than to form tender youths to good habits? God has shown us that their souls are worthy of such zeal and of such solicitude that for them he did not spare his son. Saint Joseph Calasanctius died in the year of our Lord 1648 at the age of 92. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 2:26The introit. Come my children and listen to me. I will teach you what the fear of the Lord is. At all times I will bless the Lord. His praise shall be on my lips continually.
- 2:44Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Come my children and listen to me. I will teach you what the fear of the Lord is. The Collect, let us pray.
- 3:13O God, who by means of thy confessor, Saint Joseph, was pleased to furnish thy church with new assistance for training the young in wisdom and holiness. Grant we pray thee that after his example and through his intercession, we may so labor and so teach as to gain an imperishable reward through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of wisdom. The Lord guided his faithful servants straight to his goal and on the way showed him the heavenly kingdom, gave him knowledge of holy things.
- 4:11He enriched him by his toil and gave all his labors a happy issue. Navery went about to get the better of him, but the Lord stood by him and prospered him, kept him safe from his enemies, protected him from their scheming. He would have him wrestle manfully and prove that there is no strength like the strength of wisdom. When the innocent man was sold for a slave, wisdom did not desert him, did not leave him in the hands of his persecutors, but went down with him into his dungeon. Fast was he bound, but she had not with him till she gave him dominion over a whole kingdom and power to do what he would with his persecutors.
- 5:08So she brought home the lie to those who trudiced him, and the Lord our God granted him everlasting fame. The gradual, right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels. His steps can never falter because the law of God rules in his heart. Alleluia.
- 5:39Alleluia. Blessed is he who endures under trials. When he has proved his worth, he will win the crown of life. Hallelujah. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew.
- 6:01At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, tell us, who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? Whereupon Jesus called to his side a little child to whom he gave a place in the midst of them and said, Believe me, unless you become like little children again, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. He is greatest in the kingdom of heaven who will abase himself like this little child. He who gives welcome to such a child as this in my name gives welcome to me. The Offeratory Lord, thou hast listened to the sighing of the defenseless.
- 6:55Thou hast listened to the prayer of the well ordered heart. The secret. Upon thy altars, O Lord, we heap the gifts we are offering thee. May they make atonement for us through the pleading of him whom you have given us for our helper and advocate. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 7:31Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify, we entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 8:30Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Let the children come to me.
- 8:48Do not keep them back. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these. The post communion. Let us pray. Sanctified by this life giving sacramental rite, we pray thee, Lord, that through the intercession of thy confessor, Saint Joseph, we may ever advance towards more perfect holiness through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 9:31Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Saint Joseph Calasanctius, pray for us.
