- 0:00Hey there and welcome back. I'm Dr. Hartung and
- 0:02you're listening to the Family Chiropractic Center
- 0:04podcast coming to you from right here in Robinson
- 0:07Township. Today we're talking about something
- 0:10that I think is really important and honestly
- 0:12it doesn't get enough attention in the world
- 0:14of pain management. We're talking about the mind
- 0:16-body connection and how your thoughts, your
- 0:19stress, and your emotions can actually shape
- 0:22the way you feel pain. Now, before you think
- 0:25this is going to get too abstract or philosophical,
- 0:28stick with me because this is very real, very
- 0:31physical, and very relevant to what a lot of
- 0:34you are dealing with every single day. So, let's
- 0:37start with the basics. Pain is not just something
- 0:40that happens in your body. It's something that
- 0:42happens in your brain. That might sound strange
- 0:44at first, but your nervous system, which is the
- 0:47whole communication network running from your
- 0:50brain down through your spine and out to every
- 0:53part of your body, that system is constantly
- 0:55processing signals. And it doesn't just process
- 0:59what's happening in your muscles and joints.
- 1:02It also processes your stress levels. your sleep,
- 1:06your mood, and even your past experiences with
- 1:08pain. All of that information gets mixed together
- 1:11and what comes out the other end is what you
- 1:14actually feel. Here's what's interesting. Two
- 1:16people can have the exact same injury and one
- 1:20of them might experience mild discomfort while
- 1:22the other one is in serious pain. That's not
- 1:25because one person is weaker. It's because their
- 1:28nervous systems are responding differently based
- 1:32on a whole range of factors, including mental
- 1:35and emotional ones. This is something that researchers
- 1:38and clinicians in pain science have really come
- 1:41to understand more deeply over the past few decades.
- 1:44And it changes the way we think about treatment.
- 1:47Now, here's the thing. Chronic stress is one
- 1:50of the biggest contributors to pain that I see
- 1:52in practice. When you're stressed, Your body
- 1:55releases hormones that keep your muscles tense.
- 1:59Your breathing gets shallow. Your posture changes.
- 2:02And over time, that constant tension adds up.
- 2:06Your neck gets tight. Your lower back aches.
- 2:09Your shoulders feel like they're carrying the
- 2:11weight of the world because in a way, they are.
- 2:15Stress doesn't just live in your head. It lives
- 2:18in your body too. So what can you do about it?
- 2:20A few simple things can make a real difference.
- 2:23First, Pay attention to your breathing. When
- 2:25we're stressed, we tend to breathe from the chest
- 2:28instead of the belly. Try taking slow, deep belly
- 2:32breaths a few times a day. This actually helps
- 2:35calm your nervous system down. Second, movement
- 2:38matters. Even a short walk can shift your body
- 2:41out of a stress response and help reduce muscle
- 2:43tension. Third, notice your thoughts around pain.
- 2:48If you're constantly thinking things like, this
- 2:51is never going to get better or something must
- 2:53be terribly wrong, that kind of thinking can
- 2:55actually amplify your pain signals. It doesn't
- 2:58mean the pain isn't real. It absolutely is. But
- 3:02the stories we tell ourselves about pain matter
- 3:05more than most people realize. Now, when should
- 3:08you come see us? If you've been dealing with
- 3:10pain that just doesn't seem to resolve, or if
- 3:12you feel like stress and tension ... are really
- 3:15driving your symptoms, that's exactly the kind
- 3:18of thing we address at Family Chiropractic Center.
- 3:21Chiropractic care helps restore proper movement
- 3:24and function to your spine, which takes pressure
- 3:27off your nervous system and helps your body regulate
- 3:30itself better. And when your nervous system is
- 3:33working the way it should, everything works better,
- 3:36including how your body processes stress and
- 3:38pain. We take a whole person approach here. That
- 3:41means we're not just looking at where it hurts.
- 3:44We're looking at you, your lifestyle, your patterns,
- 3:48and what's really driving the problem because
- 3:51that's how you get lasting results. Thanks so
- 3:54much for tuning in today. I hope this gave you
- 3:57a new way of thinking about pain and what your
- 3:59body is trying to tell you. If you have questions
