- 0:01Speaker 1: Everybody, since it seems like everybody's on a GLP-1 and
- 0:06Speaker 1: we're becoming a skinny nation, our GLP-1 is really a
- 0:10Speaker 1: miracle drug. That's what we're going to talk about today.
- 0:13Speaker 1: A new article comes out, says that these GLP-1s show
- 0:20Speaker 1: promise across multiple diseases, but the story is much more complex.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So we're going to dive into this and see what
- 0:26Speaker 1: we can find. Hi, and welcome to Health Talk with Dr. Lin,
- 0:29Speaker 1: your daily dose. The information you hear on this show
- 0:32Speaker 1: is informational. It's not meant to diagnose or treat any disease.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Any kind of complete health conditions must be checked out
- 0:41Speaker 1: and discussed with your primary care physician. Get ready for
- 0:45Speaker 1: the good news of the day. God bless you folks.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And here is Dr. Lent. Our reading for today, our
- 0:52Speaker 1: daily devotional, October 6th, 2026, comes from the book of
- 0:57Speaker 1: 1 Corinthians chapter 5. willing to follow wherever I lead.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Follow me wholeheartedly with glad anticipation, quickening your pace. Though
- 1:07Speaker 1: you don't know what lies ahead, I know, and that's enough.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Some of my richest blessings are just around the bend,
- 1:14Speaker 1: out of sight, but nonetheless very real. To receive these gifts,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you must walk by faith, not by sight. This doesn't
- 1:21Speaker 1: mean closing your eyes to what's going on around you.
- 1:25Speaker 1: It means subordinating the visible world to the invisible shepherd
- 1:28Speaker 1: of your soul. Sometimes I lead you up high mountains
- 1:33Speaker 1: with only my hand to support you. The higher you climb,
- 1:36Speaker 1: the more spectacular the view becomes. Also, the more keenly
- 1:40Speaker 1: you sense your separation from the world and all its problems.
- 1:44Speaker 1: This frees you to experience exuberantly the joyous reality of
- 1:47Speaker 1: my presence. Give yourself fully to these glory moments awash
- 1:51Speaker 1: in dazzling lights. I will eventually lead you down the mountain,
- 1:55Speaker 1: back into community with others. Let my light continue to
- 1:59Speaker 1: shine within you as you walk among people again. Stay tuned.
- 2:56Speaker 1: 727-916-4215 to reach me off air. Jen Weaver started taking
- 3:29Speaker 1: the GLP-1 medication to lose weight and was surprised to
- 3:33Speaker 1: find that it also relieved her joint pain. Weaver had
- 3:38Speaker 1: had rheumatoid arthritis for years. Twice a night she woke
- 3:42Speaker 1: up aching, sometimes stabbing pain in her shoulders and hips.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It would take 30 minutes to fall back asleep. What's worse,
- 3:49Speaker 1: her limited ability to exercise and the side effects of
- 3:52Speaker 1: medications caused her to gain 70 pounds. She needed to
- 3:56Speaker 1: lose weight, but more than that, she wanted to be
- 3:58Speaker 1: free of pain so she could get to the floor
- 4:00Speaker 1: and play with her grandchildren again. Research presented at the
- 4:04Speaker 1: American College of Rheumatology, their annual meeting stood out to her,
- 4:08Speaker 1: suggesting that GLP-1 drugs not only reduce weight, but can
- 4:12Speaker 1: also reduce rheumatoid arthritis flares. That something else is what's
- 4:17Speaker 1: been making headlines over the last two years. Studies are
- 4:20Speaker 1: finding that the GLP-1 drugs may fight a growing list
- 4:23Speaker 1: of diseases and conditions. inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, heart disease, dementia,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and even cancer. The popular weight loss drug is now
- 4:32Speaker 1: gaining recognition as a drug with far-reaching potential. But is
- 4:37Speaker 1: too good to be true? There's something different about GLP-1.
- 4:44Speaker 1: They mimic a peptide hormone naturally reduced by the gut
- 4:46Speaker 1: cells after we eat, helping to reduce blood glucose levels.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Because it's naturally occurring, GLP-1 and its drugs act on
- 4:54Speaker 1: the same receptors. Dr. Jens Holst, one of the pioneering
- 4:59Speaker 1: scientists behind the discovery and development of GLP-1, said in
- 5:02Speaker 1: JAMA Healthy Dialogue podcast, the receptors are widespread in the body,
- 5:07Speaker 1: in the brain, and across various organs, so GLP-1's effect
- 5:11Speaker 1: goes well beyond weight loss. One of its extra effects
- 5:14Speaker 1: is on inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. GLP-1 drugs appear
- 5:19Speaker 1: to fight inflammation at least two ways. The first is indirect,
- 5:23Speaker 1: through weight loss itself. Carrying excess weight drives chronic low-grade inflammation,
- 5:27Speaker 1: so losing weight tends to calm it down. The second
- 5:31Speaker 1: is direct because immune cells carry receptors that GLP-1 drugs
- 5:35Speaker 1: can bind to. In simple terms, the drug may tell
- 5:39Speaker 1: immune cells that make inflammatory molecules to stand down. A
- 5:44Speaker 1: meta-analysis published in Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism found that GLP-1s
- 5:49Speaker 1: were associated with a significant reduction in five inflammation biomarkers
- 5:54Speaker 1: used to monitor type 2 diabetes and autoimmune disease. That
- 5:58Speaker 1: direct anti-inflammatory effect is what patients like Sarah Landstrom noticed
- 6:02Speaker 1: outside the context of any disease they were being treated for.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Langston was using Wigovi for weight loss, but over nine
- 6:10Speaker 1: months in 2022, the painful swollen boils and absences of
- 6:15Speaker 1: a condition called hydrandentitis superativa, which had flared for years,
- 6:21Speaker 1: stopped appearing. Notably, she had lost weight before through diet
- 6:25Speaker 1: and exercise alone without any changes to her skin condition.
- 6:29Speaker 1: She said the dermatologist now suspects something beyond weight loss
- 6:32Speaker 1: at work. When her hydrodentitis flared again, he suggested she
- 6:38Speaker 1: get back on the GLP-1 drug. Research published in JAMA
- 6:42Speaker 1: Dermatology found that those who were overweight or obese, GLP-1
- 6:46Speaker 1: drugs cut skin flares by half. GLP-1's inflammatory fighting effects
- 6:52Speaker 1: It connects to something bigger, your metabolism. Metabolism turns food
- 6:57Speaker 1: into usable energy to fuel every chemical reaction in the body.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It's linked to diabetes, heart disease, depression, dementia, and increasingly cancer.
- 7:07Speaker 1: GLP-1 drugs work differently than older weight loss drugs, which
- 7:10Speaker 1: mostly suppressed appetite. Appetite-suppressing drugs can curb hunger in the
- 7:15Speaker 1: short term, but they don't fix the underlying metabolic problem.
- 7:19Speaker 1: GLP-1 drugs instead target the hormones that regulate blood sugar
- 7:22Speaker 1: and insulin, which can address metabolic dysfunction more directly. And
- 7:27Speaker 1: because metabolic dysfunction is widespread, one-third of Americans have it,
- 7:32Speaker 1: and that that rises to 62% among those 60 and older. Dr.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Florence Comit, a Yale and National Institute-trained physician-scientist who's been
- 7:42Speaker 1: using GLP-1s for patients since 2005. Interesting. Interesting. calls the
- 7:48Speaker 1: drugs the antibiotic of this era. While lives may not
- 7:52Speaker 1: be extended in quite the same way, she said correcting
- 7:55Speaker 1: metabolic health improves healthspan. Many have two or more diseases.
- 7:59Speaker 1: We may be living longer, but we don't necessarily have
- 8:02Speaker 1: a great quality of life in those final years or
- 8:05Speaker 1: even decades. Inflammation is deeply connected along with uncontrolled insulin
- 8:09Speaker 1: and glucose to poor metabolic health. Inflammation can result from
- 8:14Speaker 1: eating too much food or too many processed foods compared
- 8:16Speaker 1: to our ancestors. who lacked unlimited food, and therefore had
- 8:19Speaker 1: something we don't recognize or experience, unplanned metabolic breaks. Another
- 8:26Speaker 1: factor influencing our metabolism today is added sugar and excess starch.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Weight loss on its own is already linked to a
- 8:32Speaker 1: lower risk of 13 different cancer types, which together accounts
- 8:36Speaker 1: for about 40% of all cancer cases. Beyond the established link,
- 8:40Speaker 1: researchers are exploring whether GLP-1 drugs directly target cancer. Physicians
- 8:45Speaker 1: and patients are increasingly clamoring For pharmaceutical guidance amid speculation,
- 8:50Speaker 1: GLP-1 drugs could be the magic bullet for cancer prevention.
- 8:54Speaker 1: There is perhaps no singular preventative intervention with such broad
- 8:58Speaker 1: potential to improve health, especially in women. Smaller studies in
- 9:02Speaker 1: laboratory animals show that GLP-1s may alter tumor metabolism and
- 9:06Speaker 1: the body's immune response, inhibit some tumor growth in certain cancers,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and directly reduce inflammation. Interesting, huh? Because of widespread receptors
- 9:19Speaker 1: in the body with some of the most concentrated areas
- 9:21Speaker 1: being in the brain, the drug has some effect on
- 9:24Speaker 1: mental health and brain-related conditions. A study published in Lancet
- 9:28Speaker 1: Psychiatry found that taking semiglutide significantly lowered the risk of
- 9:32Speaker 1: worsening mental illness. GLP-1s aren't the only drug with the
- 9:37Speaker 1: potential for far-reaching unexpected effects. SGLT-2 inhibitors, type 2 drug
- 9:43Speaker 1: types like dabaglafoxan, Work by removing extra sugar from the kidneys.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Research has found they improve cell energy, reduce inflammation, turn
- 9:53Speaker 1: genes on and off, promote cell cleanup, and potential benefits
- 9:56Speaker 1: for the kidney, liver, and heart. They've been shown to
- 9:59Speaker 1: be even more effective than GLP-1 drugs for reducing rheumatoid
- 10:02Speaker 1: arthritis flares. One key difference between GLP-1s and the natural
- 10:07Speaker 1: GLP-1 our body makes is that natural GLP-1 is very
- 10:11Speaker 1: short-lived and degrades rapidly. GLP-1 drugs are engineered to last
- 10:15Speaker 1: days or weeks rather than minutes. In other words, the
- 10:18Speaker 1: drugs match what becomes ordinary, a lifestyle of larger, more
- 10:22Speaker 1: frequent meals and snacking. GLP-1 drugs are not risk-free, and
- 10:26Speaker 1: doctors are very wary of current enthusiasm outrunning the evidence.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Here are some things to watch out for. Gallbladder disease, pancreatitis,
- 10:36Speaker 1: gastrointestinal problems. These drugs haven't been used widely for long
- 10:41Speaker 1: enough to know what happens after years of continual use.
- 10:45Speaker 1: More than half of Americans who start GLP-1s quit within
- 10:47Speaker 1: a year. Due to the popularity of GLP-1s, compound and
- 10:51Speaker 1: gray market versions have created an opening for disreputable sellers,
- 10:57Speaker 1: and patients have received compromised or ineffective products as a result. Bax,
- 11:05Speaker 1: whose clinic focuses on lifestyle modification to lower inflammation, isn't
- 11:12Speaker 1: a fan of GLP-1s. doesn't discourage patients who want to
- 11:15Speaker 1: use them. However, rather than prescribing him himself, he refers
- 11:18Speaker 1: them to a weight loss specialist for that treatment. He
- 11:21Speaker 1: works with the patients taking GLP-1s who are willing to
- 11:23Speaker 1: fix poor diets and address the root cause of dysfunction
- 11:27Speaker 1: and metabolism. I try to be flexible and meet people
- 11:31Speaker 1: where they are. Our body can generate their own GLP-1
- 11:35Speaker 1: through various ways. Nutrient-rich foods such as fiber, protein, and
- 11:39Speaker 1: healthy fats each play a a unique role in hormone release,
- 11:42Speaker 1: including GLP-1. However, the benefits fade soon after you give
- 11:47Speaker 1: up your healthy diet, just like they do when you
- 11:49Speaker 1: stop taking GLP-1s. Whether you take GLP-1s or not, a
- 11:53Speaker 1: diet of chips and soda isn't protective of disease. She
- 11:56Speaker 1: said medications act as a stopgap measure, and other solutions
- 12:01Speaker 1: are needed to address poor lifestyle. I would just hate
- 12:03Speaker 1: to see us walk away and say, oh, medicines are
- 12:07Speaker 1: all we need to do. We need to get to
- 12:09Speaker 1: other problems around how we make the world healthy. Questions, comments? 727-916-4215.
