- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 2: The Rex was not chasing the Jeep.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Murray!
- 0:08Speaker 2: Murray, you there? You love sandwiches, huh?
- 0:11Speaker 1: Let's go to 80. His name is Bo.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Wow.
- 0:16Speaker 2: That's prime time, baby. I had a crush on Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 1: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 2: He cost them the game last night. Although they won
- 0:28Speaker 2: the game.
- 0:29Speaker 1: You're listening to Stugatz & Company. The great Mike Greenberg
- 0:34Speaker 1: joins us. And I got to tell you, I was
- 0:36Speaker 1: watching his 30th anniversary yesterday. Congratulations, Greedy. And I was
- 0:41Speaker 1: thinking to myself that I hope that my wife cares
- 0:44Speaker 1: about our 30th anniversary as much as ESPN cared about
- 0:48Speaker 1: your 30th anniversary. How about that?
- 0:52Speaker 3: So the guys, the people who produce the Get Up show, said,
- 0:58Speaker 3: we're going to do some stuff for your 30th. I
- 1:00Speaker 3: knew that it was coming because PR reaches out to
- 1:03Speaker 3: you because you're going to get like this Jiminy Cricket
- 1:06Speaker 3: statue that they gave me on the air.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:08Speaker 3: So it becomes like a thing. And they said, oh,
- 1:11Speaker 3: we want to do a little something to celebrate.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I said, great.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I had no idea what it was going to be.
- 1:16Speaker 3: And I had at the same time, like conflicting emotions,
- 1:22Speaker 3: one of which was this is probably too much. Um,
- 1:26Speaker 3: But the other was it was really felt very good,
- 1:28Speaker 3: you know, because I've always been a person who like
- 1:34Speaker 3: I'm never the you know, we've got big, big, big
- 1:37Speaker 3: stars at ESPN. We get a lot of attention and
- 1:39Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff. And that's just not who
- 1:42Speaker 3: I am. Like, not that I'm shy, not that I
- 1:45Speaker 3: wouldn't like to be that person. I don't mean that
- 1:48Speaker 3: to sound falsely modest. It means my personality is just
- 1:51Speaker 3: never going to be that. I'm never going to be
- 1:53Speaker 3: Pat McAfee or Dan Levitard or Stu Gatz or Stephen A.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Smith or someone like that who's constantly in the center
- 1:59Speaker 3: of all the attention. I'm always generally my lot in
- 2:05Speaker 3: professional life has been to be a pass first point
- 2:07Speaker 3: guard and try and make everyone else be great. So
- 2:11Speaker 3: like for one day, it just felt there was sort
- 2:13Speaker 3: of a part of me that felt very good having
- 2:15Speaker 3: everyone saying nice things about me and whatever. And it
- 2:19Speaker 3: didn't it's weird, like it's different from a birthday celebration.
- 2:23Speaker 3: or an anniversary, like, you know, a wedding anniversary, or
- 2:26Speaker 3: your kid's birthday, those are the milestones you're used to, right?
- 2:29Speaker 3: You know, like, when your kids graduate from college, or,
- 2:32Speaker 3: you know, I don't know, when your daughter wins the
- 2:34Speaker 3: lacrosse national championship, or, which is an experience I've not had,
- 2:39Speaker 3: but maybe someone I know has, or, or, you know, like,
- 2:42Speaker 3: when I turned 50, or whatever, this is totally different
- 2:46Speaker 3: and weird. Like, I have worked at ESPN for 30 years?
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Like, that's impossible. Like, so it was a weird day
- 2:56Speaker 3: in a variety of ways.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Right. I don't know anyone whose daughter won one championship.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I do know someone whose daughter won two. How about that? Mike,
- 3:07Speaker 1: if I told you 30 years ago when you took
- 3:09Speaker 1: the SportsCenter set, were you nervous 30 years ago when
- 3:13Speaker 1: you took the SportsCenter set? I'll finish that question in
- 3:15Speaker 1: a sec.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Oh, my God. Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Let's start with this.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I definitely didn't take the SportsCenter set. I was hired
- 3:22Speaker 3: when they created a network called ESPN News. So that's
- 3:27Speaker 3: what the set I took. The reason you don't know
- 3:30Speaker 3: that is because literally no one was watching it. When
- 3:34Speaker 3: we launched that network, there were, I think, eight or
- 3:36Speaker 3: nine of us that started together. I've always thought of
- 3:39Speaker 3: us as almost being like a pledge class. Um, and
- 3:43Speaker 3: some of them are people that you would know was
- 3:45Speaker 3: me and Michael Kim and Dave Feldman, Chuck Garfine, Ian Page.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I don't leave anybody out like Dave Revson. Um, that
- 3:53Speaker 3: was part of the original group and, and, and a
- 3:55Speaker 3: few others. And, you know, my, I would have maybe
- 4:00Speaker 3: once a month or once every two months, they would
- 4:02Speaker 3: let us do sports center. Mostly we were on this
- 4:06Speaker 3: fledgling network called ESPN news that when we first went
- 4:09Speaker 3: on the air was on a total of one cable
- 4:12Speaker 3: system which was in san jose california so when the
- 4:16Speaker 3: san jose sharks played we always led with that no
- 4:19Speaker 3: matter what and we used to we could be like
- 4:21Speaker 3: all right yeah the super bowl has concluded highlights in
- 4:24Speaker 3: a moment but first the sharks took on the blue jackets.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah their market built in yes.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And then slowly but surely it you know it grew
- 4:32Speaker 3: into whatever it has ceased to exist now the network
- 4:36Speaker 3: is still there but they don't do we did this
- 4:37Speaker 3: 24-hour sports wheel um So I was most definitely not
- 4:42Speaker 3: on SportsCenter. And was I nervous? Hell yes, I was nervous.
- 4:45Speaker 3: And I was wondering like crazy whether and there were
- 4:49Speaker 3: many times in the early years where I thought to myself,
- 4:52Speaker 3: what the hell did I do here? I made it.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I had the makings of a pretty decent career starting
- 4:58Speaker 3: in Chicago. I had just and it just started to
- 5:01Speaker 3: roll a little bit. And I had a girlfriend that
- 5:04Speaker 3: I knew I wanted to marry. She was still going
- 5:06Speaker 3: to require a lot of talking into on that. And
- 5:08Speaker 3: she most definitely was not moving to the middle of
- 5:11Speaker 3: Connecticut at that point. So on my days off, I
- 5:15Speaker 3: was flying back and forth to Chicago every single week.
- 5:18Speaker 3: So yeah, I had multiple years when I first started
- 5:22Speaker 3: where I wasn't just nervous, where I actively questioned whether
- 5:26Speaker 3: I had made an enormous mistake in my life.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Right. I was going to ask you if I told
- 5:31Speaker 1: you your first day at ESPN that 30 years later
- 5:34Speaker 1: you'd still be doing it, you would have told me what?
- 5:39Speaker 3: I think I would have been thrilled. I mean, this
- 5:42Speaker 3: is the only thing I've ever really wanted to do.
- 5:44Speaker 1: This is it.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You know, there's this great video that every once in
- 5:49Speaker 3: a while pops up on my reels where there's a guy.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I wish I knew his name. I don't know what
- 5:53Speaker 3: his name is. But he says, don't follow your passion.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Find something you're good at and do that. People who
- 5:59Speaker 3: tell you to follow your passion are already rich. Go
- 6:01Speaker 3: make money doing whatever it is you're good at. And
- 6:04Speaker 3: I think that is good advice generally. I think telling
- 6:06Speaker 3: young people, follow your dream no matter what it is,
- 6:09Speaker 3: is actually not very good advice because then if they
- 6:12Speaker 3: don't find success in whatever it is that they're dreaming of,
- 6:15Speaker 3: they're going to somehow think that they failed when what
- 6:18Speaker 3: they've chosen is something that 0.01% of the population will
- 6:22Speaker 3: ever find success in. Well, that's what I did. I
- 6:26Speaker 3: actually did follow my passion. into something that almost no
- 6:31Speaker 3: one does for 30 years. You and I are extremely
- 6:35Speaker 3: rare examples of this. So I think when I started
- 6:41Speaker 3: out 30 years ago, I think almost everyone in my
- 6:45Speaker 3: family assumed that I would just keep scratching this itch
- 6:47Speaker 3: until I just gave up on it and I wound
- 6:50Speaker 3: up going to law school, which is what everyone always
- 6:52Speaker 3: thought I would do, like my father. And So if
- 6:55Speaker 3: you had told me then, I would have said, holy smoke,
- 6:58Speaker 3: I'm actually going to make it. I can't believe it. So,
- 7:02Speaker 3: you know, I think I would have been thrilled. Yes.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Check him out on Get Up, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Eastern every morning. It's a fantastic show. He does a
- 7:11Speaker 1: tremendous job. We all know that, though. Yesterday, I'm watching
- 7:15Speaker 1: that show and I'm thinking, is Sal Pal addressing you
- 7:19Speaker 1: as Michael? the greatest compliment that sports media can give someone. Like,
- 7:24Speaker 1: I feel you look so happy when, still, 30 years
- 7:28Speaker 1: into this, when you were introducing Sal Pal. It's amazing.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And he calls you Michael. And I think it's unbelievable.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yes. It's become a little bit of an inside joke
- 7:37Speaker 3: with the staff of the show. He used to, he
- 7:41Speaker 3: would come, the name of the show was Mike and Mike, okay?
- 7:43Speaker 3: Golik and I did that show for 18 years.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Yes.
- 7:45Speaker 3: It was called Mike and Mike. He would come on.
- 7:49Speaker 3: And he would say, Michael, Michael, here's what I've got.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Always Michael and Michael. And so he's just, that's just how,
- 7:57Speaker 3: so it's become like, so one of the reasons I
- 7:59Speaker 3: may be smiling is because every time he says it,
- 8:01Speaker 3: we all kind of look at each other, like how
- 8:03Speaker 3: great it is, but I love his energy. I, I,
- 8:06Speaker 3: I love, there's nothing not to love about Sal.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So good.
- 8:10Speaker 3: He has so much energy as so much sort of a,
- 8:15Speaker 3: Like he loves what he does. Mike Ditka once said
- 8:19Speaker 3: to me about Adam Schefter, I like people who love
- 8:21Speaker 3: what they do. And Adam Schefter loves what he does.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Sal loves, there's nothing in the world he would rather
- 8:27Speaker 3: be doing. than standing on that field where the Ravens
- 8:32Speaker 3: and the commanders are having a joint practice. And he's like,
- 8:36Speaker 3: he texted Dan Quinn that morning, and he's got something
- 8:39Speaker 3: for you. And he's so excited to share it. And
- 8:42Speaker 3: that's what it should be. You know, that's what this
- 8:44Speaker 3: business was. It's why you and I started doing it.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And it's devolved into so much other nonsense that at
- 8:50Speaker 3: its core, It is about what's going on at the
- 8:53Speaker 3: joint practice between the Ravens and the Commanders. And Sal
- 8:56Speaker 3: gets that. So I love it. And yes, he calls
- 8:58Speaker 3: me Michael and I hope he never stops.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And you smile every time you toss it to him.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Not just yesterday, every single time. And I love that.
- 9:06Speaker 1: When did you know he had something for you in
- 9:08Speaker 1: the anniversary? Because anyone who knows Sal Powell knows he's
- 9:11Speaker 1: not letting a marching band get in the way of
- 9:12Speaker 1: his shot. And so he had to plan that out.
- 9:15Speaker 3: OK, yes, I will. That one I had no idea
- 9:19Speaker 3: when it first started to happen, when they first started playing.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I thought, wow, in 30 years, this has never happened.
- 9:27Speaker 3: I've never had a live shot drowned out by a
- 9:30Speaker 3: marching band. You know, it's one thing if you're like
- 9:32Speaker 3: at a game and the stadium is loud and all
- 9:34Speaker 3: sorts of things like that are happening. But like at
- 9:37Speaker 3: this thing, I would not have expected that. I did
- 9:40Speaker 3: not realize until he stopped them and started telling them
- 9:45Speaker 3: what to do. He played it off great. So I
- 9:48Speaker 3: will tell you, the answer to your question is he
- 9:50Speaker 3: had me fooled right up to the point that he
- 9:52Speaker 3: gave it away. And that was awesome. It was, I
- 9:55Speaker 3: thought it was absolutely hilarious. Yes.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Uh was rex ryan showing off what was he doing
- 10:00Speaker 1: there i mean golf course right in front of the
- 10:01Speaker 1: house you.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Know what you know what i thought was really weird
- 10:05Speaker 3: about that someone pointed it out to me and i
- 10:07Speaker 3: went back and looked at it right Rex was wearing
- 10:10Speaker 3: a glove on his right hand. He plays golf right-handed.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I'm not sure what that was. I need to confirm
- 10:21Speaker 3: that with him. I'll see him in about a week.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I don't, I don't, if he's left-handed, I'm not aware
- 10:26Speaker 3: of it. I've never played golf with Rex, but he
- 10:30Speaker 3: was wearing a glove on his right hand, which is,
- 10:33Speaker 3: So was he showing off? Was he in a special?
- 10:35Speaker 3: Was he at a golf course you recognized? He lives
- 10:37Speaker 3: on a golf course.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Yes. No, I just marveled. I love Rex. He should
- 10:41Speaker 1: still be the Jets coach. I just marveled at what
- 10:43Speaker 1: a nice community he lived in for getting the Jets.
- 10:45Speaker 1: He was under 500. I mean.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Yeah, he was. He got multiple contracts. We got multiple
- 10:50Speaker 3: contracts from the Jets and then another one from the Bills. Yes. So, no,
- 10:54Speaker 3: Rex is doing okay. And yet that does not stop
- 10:56Speaker 3: him from being the most frugal person you have ever
- 10:58Speaker 3: met in your entire life. He was, and I'm not
- 11:01Speaker 3: making this up, devastated when Spirit Airlines went out of business.
- 11:05Speaker 3: He was so upset. Right. He would fly Spirit. That
- 11:11Speaker 3: man does not spend any... That's one of the reasons
- 11:14Speaker 3: he can live in a nice place. He doesn't spend
- 11:16Speaker 3: any money. Right.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Big seat, right? Right up front. Big seat for Rex.
- 11:19Speaker 1: That's like first class for Spirit.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 11:20Speaker 1: You have no idea what I'm talking about.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know. I will confess I never
- 11:24Speaker 3: was on a Spirit Airlines plane.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Well, I don't know. I remember one time I was
- 11:31Speaker 3: on a Southwest Airlines plane. Yes. And that was when
- 11:34Speaker 3: I learned that you don't get a seat assigned to you. Right.
- 11:37Speaker 3: You just have to get up and fight for it
- 11:39Speaker 3: like it's Lord of the Flies. And you're just like
- 11:42Speaker 3: getting on the plane and you're like, what do you
- 11:43Speaker 3: mean I've got to sit backwards? Like I cannot face
- 11:47Speaker 3: the wrong way on an airplane. I can't even sit
- 11:51Speaker 3: in the back seat of a car where I'm going
- 11:53Speaker 3: to get nauseous. You're telling me I've got to fly backwards?
- 11:56Speaker 3: From Hartford to Fort Lauderdale, facing the wrong way.
- 12:00Speaker 1: This is going to.
- 12:01Speaker 3: End very badly. So that was my experience with that.
- 12:06Speaker 3: So that's Rex's favorite airline. Whatever the standing is you
- 12:10Speaker 3: get on that, whatever the equivalent of mileage plus, whatever
- 12:14Speaker 3: it is, he's got it. Now, I don't know what
- 12:16Speaker 3: it gets you.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yes.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I don't know what it is they give you for
- 12:18Speaker 3: that because they have nothing. There's no food.
- 12:21Speaker 1: They literally have nothing right now.
- 12:25Speaker 3: You are our highest rated customer. And for that, you
- 12:29Speaker 3: receive nothing but our appreciation. Yes.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Just to update you, since then, since you last flew Southwest,
- 12:36Speaker 1: they have changed their policy. They now assign seats, okay? Oh, really? Yes.
- 12:42Speaker 1: You can get an aisle seat now. You don't have
- 12:43Speaker 1: to sit backwards.
- 12:44Speaker 3: OK.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And I said backwards.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I said.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And on and on Spirit, they have four big seats
- 12:53Speaker 1: in the first. I think it's the first row. And
- 12:56Speaker 1: that's their first class. They're gigantic, enormous seats. You're first
- 13:00Speaker 1: on your first off. It's first class, but really big seats.
- 13:04Speaker 3: But am I mistaken? Did they not go? I don't
- 13:07Speaker 3: mean to go out of business.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah, they did.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Yes.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, yeah. So they don't have that anymore. You're
- 13:13Speaker 3: saying they had that.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Yeah, they had that. Stu Gatz and Company is brought

- 15:10Speaker 1: You don't see an end for you anytime soon, and
- 15:13Speaker 1: I was happy to hear you say that. But I
- 15:15Speaker 1: am wondering, the thing at ESPN over the last 30
- 15:19Speaker 1: years that you haven't done that you wish you had done,
- 15:22Speaker 1: and you've done mostly everything, Mike.
- 15:28Speaker 3: What do I wish I had done? Boy, it's very
- 15:30Speaker 3: tough to say. We're going to get the Super Bowl
- 15:33Speaker 3: this year, and I'm going to have some role in that.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I don't know exactly what.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:37Speaker 3: That's certainly something I've never done that I'm super excited
- 15:40Speaker 3: to do. Right. Uh, there had never been a point
- 15:43Speaker 3: where I could have done it before. Um, so that's great.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Um, you've hosted a big morning show.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I mean, you've done, you've hosted two shows like, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 3: between Mike and Mike and, and, and this one, I
- 15:56Speaker 3: do the NFL. Now I did the NBA for a
- 15:59Speaker 3: couple of years. Um, You know, I've never been involved
- 16:02Speaker 3: in the baseball coverage. Well, okay, I'll give you one.
- 16:05Speaker 1: I think I have one for you. I have your answer,
- 16:07Speaker 1: but go ahead.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Well, I don't know why it took me so long
- 16:10Speaker 3: to think of it, but it's golf.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I would like, so there was one year, it was 2019,
- 16:18Speaker 3: which happened to be the year that Tiger won, that
- 16:23Speaker 3: they sent me down there and I got to do
- 16:25Speaker 3: a little bit of stuff. Not the actual telecast. But
- 16:29Speaker 3: on Thursday and Friday in the mornings, people who are
- 16:32Speaker 3: golf fans probably aware of this, we do something that
- 16:35Speaker 3: is called SportsCenter at the Masters. And we're allowed to
- 16:38Speaker 3: show shots up until two or three o'clock in the afternoon.
- 16:42Speaker 3: There's no live coverage, but you're allowed to show shots
- 16:46Speaker 3: a short while after they've been hit. So it's almost
- 16:48Speaker 3: like you're seeing it live. And I got to do
- 16:50Speaker 3: two hours of that on Thursday and two hours of
- 16:53Speaker 3: it on Friday. And then I hosted SportsCenter stuff from there.
- 16:56Speaker 3: the rest of the weekend. And I loved it. It
- 16:58Speaker 3: was fantastic. And then the following season, they gave me
- 17:01Speaker 3: the NFL draft and that's two weeks later. And so
- 17:05Speaker 3: I couldn't do it anymore. So I, someday, like, I
- 17:08Speaker 3: don't know when this is going to happen, but there's
- 17:10Speaker 3: going to come a time in my life. I don't,
- 17:14Speaker 3: at this moment, I don't feel like it's soon, but
- 17:16Speaker 3: there's going to come a time in my life where
- 17:18Speaker 3: I'm not going to want to work as much as
- 17:19Speaker 3: I'm working now. And the two things I would like
- 17:23Speaker 3: to do then is, So either of them or both
- 17:26Speaker 3: of them would be get significantly involved in golf in
- 17:31Speaker 3: some way. Wouldn't necessarily have to even be in broadcasting.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Like I'd love to be involved somehow with the tour
- 17:37Speaker 3: or with the USGA, or I don't know what that
- 17:39Speaker 3: would look like. I don't know what it would mean.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I'm not an executive. Something with golf, because I just
- 17:45Speaker 3: love it that much. And the other thing is that
- 17:48Speaker 3: eventually I will go back and do a radio show again.
- 17:50Speaker 3: If there's one thing I miss sometimes- It's the ability
- 17:54Speaker 3: to just sort of vamp, just to sort of talk
- 17:57Speaker 3: extemporaneously about funny things that happened to me in my life.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Not the sports stuff. Right. Like the sports stuff is easy.
- 18:03Speaker 3: I've got room to do that every day if I
- 18:06Speaker 3: want to. But, you know, this when something weird and
- 18:08Speaker 3: funny happens to you in your life, as you have
- 18:11Speaker 3: on the air for decades and I did on the
- 18:14Speaker 3: air for decades, you just talk about it in the
- 18:16Speaker 3: middle of your radio show. And I miss that. Yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 3: And I would like, you know, I've said this. This
- 18:20Speaker 3: is not the first time I've said this publicly. Like
- 18:23Speaker 3: I could see myself doing it, living down somewhere vaguely
- 18:26Speaker 3: near where you live. I really like the East Coast
- 18:29Speaker 3: of Florida. And so, you know, something doing it from
- 18:32Speaker 3: down there. So that's my eventually plan. But I don't
- 18:36Speaker 3: know if, you know, I'll know when it I'll wake
- 18:39Speaker 3: up one day and think, OK, I think I'm getting
- 18:41Speaker 3: close to that right now. I don't feel anywhere near it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: There is a there's an empty seat right next to
- 18:45Speaker 1: me in the studio. If you would. I mean, just
- 18:47Speaker 1: that'd be great.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I mean, you know, you would have actually a very
- 18:54Speaker 3: good show.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Oh, no question about it. Speaking of me and you,
- 18:58Speaker 1: the two shows that we did together, the two glorious
- 19:01Speaker 1: days that I filled in for Golic doing Mike and
- 19:03Speaker 1: Mike with you. Where do those rank over the 30
- 19:05Speaker 1: years in terms of your all time greatest days? at ESPN.
- 19:08Speaker 1: They had to be top five, right?
- 19:09Speaker 3: I mean, they were very, very high. We had, I
- 19:14Speaker 3: do recall that we had a lot of fun. I
- 19:17Speaker 3: do recall there was what I forget what the, did I,
- 19:19Speaker 3: did my microphone break or something? Yes. I came over
- 19:23Speaker 3: and I, cause I still, I have this mental picture of,
- 19:26Speaker 3: of like me leaning over you and we're talking into
- 19:30Speaker 3: one microphone. Yeah.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Your mic broke. You had to stroll over to my,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I had to fill five seconds. I was very nervous.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Mike and Mike, I mean, Jesus, You had to walk over.
- 19:38Speaker 1: You use my microphone. You and I had a conversation
- 19:42Speaker 1: speaking into the same mic. Yes.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Like we're like we're Paul McCartney and George Harrison, like singing,
- 19:48Speaker 3: singing the background on. on, on I feel fine.
- 19:51Speaker 5: That's what I pictured you two back to back going.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And then the Yankees won.
- 19:59Speaker 3: I think it kind of was like that.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I mean, those were fun days. You know, someone asked
- 20:05Speaker 3: me yesterday, like, what's the, my, my, my, my favorite
- 20:08Speaker 3: memory or whatever it is about, And I have two
- 20:11Speaker 3: things from the 30 years, if you will, because what
- 20:17Speaker 3: I enjoyed the most and what I'm the most proud
- 20:20Speaker 3: of are probably two different things or they are, they
- 20:23Speaker 3: are two different things, right? The most enjoyable time definitely
- 20:27Speaker 3: was 2006. So in 2000, Mike and Mike started in
- 20:32Speaker 3: 2000 and we were, we started developing a little popularity
- 20:36Speaker 3: and whatever it was, but you know, we were still a,
- 20:38Speaker 3: we were still sort of a very niche thing. In 2006,
- 20:44Speaker 3: they moved our simulcast to ESPN2. All of a sudden
- 20:47Speaker 3: our show went on ESPN2 and it exploded. Like it
- 20:51Speaker 3: just changed everything. The power of television. If you, if
- 20:55Speaker 3: I ever wondered about it, I certainly stopped wondering then
- 20:59Speaker 3: within a few months, we were on the Letterman show
- 21:02Speaker 3: and we were at the white house and all kinds
- 21:05Speaker 3: of stuff happened. And the show just exploded. And I
- 21:08Speaker 3: went from being no one to being as close to
- 21:12Speaker 3: someone as I was ever going to be. And that
- 21:15Speaker 3: was really fun. Like just running around and, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 3: all these exciting things happen. I think that was the
- 21:22Speaker 3: most fun I ever had in my 30 years at
- 21:25Speaker 3: ESPN was that little period of time. You know, when
- 21:29Speaker 3: that show was, as you know, we literally did whatever
- 21:32Speaker 3: we wanted. So whatever we felt like talking about that day,
- 21:35Speaker 3: we would. And so that was fun. The thing I'm
- 21:38Speaker 3: proudest of is we launched the new show. We launched
- 21:41Speaker 3: Get Up in the spring of 2018. And I still
- 21:45Speaker 3: have like a file of articles that were written in
- 21:50Speaker 3: newspapers and online, not saying that the show was failing,
- 21:56Speaker 3: but saying that it had failed. Get Up is a disaster.
- 22:01Speaker 3: It's the worst decision ESPN ever made. I was the
- 22:04Speaker 3: captain of the Titanic. And again, it's one thing for
- 22:11Speaker 3: someone to tell you you're doing badly. It's another thing
- 22:13Speaker 3: for like the world's perspective to be you're done. It's over.
- 22:17Speaker 3: You have failed. You tried this and it did not work,
- 22:21Speaker 3: which wouldn't have been the end of the world, but
- 22:23Speaker 3: you know, it would not have been great.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Yes.
- 22:28Speaker 1: No one likes failure in their life, Mike, of course.
- 22:32Speaker 3: I'm proud of the fact that, that, you know, I
- 22:36Speaker 3: remember I said to Stace, like, here's what I'm going
- 22:39Speaker 3: to do. Like you're, you're, you're in charge of looking
- 22:44Speaker 3: at social media for me from now on for sure.
- 22:46Speaker 3: I'm not going to read anything. I'm not going to
- 22:48Speaker 3: look at what anyone is saying. You tell me if
- 22:50Speaker 3: there's something I absolutely need to know outside of that,
- 22:54Speaker 3: I'm ignoring what the world is saying. I'm going to
- 22:57Speaker 3: put my head down and I'm going to figure out
- 22:58Speaker 3: how to fix this freaking thing. If it is the
- 23:00Speaker 3: last thing that I And, um, and we did, you know, and, and,
- 23:05Speaker 3: and so I'm very proud of that because it's one
- 23:08Speaker 3: thing that like Mike and Mike started from nothing and
- 23:11Speaker 3: we just sort of built it gradually and slowly and
- 23:13Speaker 3: it turned into whatever it turned into. GetUp started under
- 23:16Speaker 3: like a very, very harsh microscope. People were watching closely
- 23:21Speaker 3: and we had a lot of stuff wrong at the beginning.
- 23:23Speaker 3: We just did. We just had, you know, we, we
- 23:25Speaker 3: made a series of educated guesses of what we thought
- 23:28Speaker 3: would work and almost all of them turned out to
- 23:30Speaker 3: have been wrong. And, you know, that looked like it
- 23:36Speaker 3: was in real trouble. It didn't look like it. It
- 23:39Speaker 3: was in real trouble.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:41Speaker 3: And but, you know, we we fixed it. And so
- 23:44Speaker 3: I'm I'm proud of that. So those those are the
- 23:47Speaker 3: two things I thought about yesterday.
- 23:48Speaker 1: You're the you're the Baker Mayfield of sports television hosts.
- 23:52Speaker 1: You use it as a chip on your shoulder.
- 23:53Speaker 3: You did.
- 23:54Speaker 1: You found the chip and you used it. How about that?
- 23:56Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's interesting because every once in a while,
- 23:59Speaker 3: I don't know that it's, you know, Like you reach
- 24:02Speaker 3: a point where you're like, what the hell?
- 24:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Like someone will be like, you suck, Greenberg. And I'll
- 24:10Speaker 3: be like, okay.
- 24:11Speaker 1: You know, do I? Fine, I suck.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yes. You're welcome to that opinion. You're most certainly not
- 24:19Speaker 3: the only person who has it. You know what's interesting?
- 24:22Speaker 3: I don't read. So Twitter X, whatever it's now called,
- 24:26Speaker 3: or however people are referring to it, has gotten to
- 24:29Speaker 3: be so horrible. that I can't even look at it anymore.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Like I barely ever look at it. But yesterday I
- 24:36Speaker 3: looked at it, you know, because people were writing me
- 24:38Speaker 3: and there were quite a few nice messages, but then
- 24:40Speaker 3: there were a ton of horrible ones. But what I
- 24:44Speaker 3: find most interesting is that when someone writes you a
- 24:47Speaker 3: horrible message, like ESPN celebrating 30 years, and then there's
- 24:51Speaker 3: someone who will write back, 29 too many. This guy sucks. Whatever,
- 24:55Speaker 3: whatever horrible thing it is. Then someone invariably will fight
- 25:00Speaker 3: for me. So like someone will respond to that guy,
- 25:03Speaker 3: defend me. And then they get into a fight and
- 25:06Speaker 3: I want to pull up the guy who's defending me
- 25:08Speaker 3: and say, listen, I can't tell you how much I
- 25:11Speaker 3: appreciate this, but in all honesty, like don't worry about it.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Let it go. I'm good with it.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Yeah. This just isn't, this just isn't that deep. You know,
- 25:22Speaker 3: like this guy can say that and it's really not
- 25:25Speaker 3: having an impact. I so appreciate what you're trying to do.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 25:30Speaker 3: But so I forget what, oh, so the chip, but
- 25:34Speaker 3: I do, I will admit every once in a while,
- 25:38Speaker 3: I do enjoy looking back and reading them. Of course.
- 25:41Speaker 3: It's actually still a little part of me that gets nervous. Yes.
- 25:45Speaker 3: I read them and I'm like, oh, Jesus. I have
- 25:49Speaker 3: to remind myself this was written in 2018.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:53Speaker 3: And all is well because people wrote the most, I mean,
- 25:58Speaker 3: just horrible things.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 3: So I still do read them every once in a while.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I do. Yep.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I do the same. When Dan and I started down
- 26:07Speaker 1: here in Miami, someone wrote a column in the paper.
- 26:10Speaker 1: They called us Sissy Boy Radio. They said this show
- 26:13Speaker 1: is going to fail. It's never going to succeed. We
- 26:15Speaker 1: were the highest rated show in the market six months later.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And 20 years later, we had, you know, Hall of
- 26:21Speaker 1: Fame careers. But I do look back at those articles.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I read them and I feel good about what we accomplished,
- 26:25Speaker 1: you know.
- 26:26Speaker 3: There is something to be said for that, for just
- 26:29Speaker 3: having overcome whatever it is. people expected and, and whatever.
- 26:36Speaker 3: And it's, it, I know down deep inside, it's absolutely
- 26:41Speaker 3: the wrong way to look at it. Like you should
- 26:43Speaker 3: define your own self and define your own happiness and
- 26:45Speaker 3: be proud on your own merit and not have to say, see,
- 26:48Speaker 3: I told you so, but every once in a while,
- 26:50Speaker 3: it is kind of nice. Yeah.
- 26:51Speaker 1: It feels good.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I told you so.
- 26:53Speaker 1: This is why you love sports radio. We'll get you
- 26:55Speaker 1: out of here in a second. We were just having
- 26:57Speaker 1: a conversation. This is not something you could probably do
- 27:00Speaker 1: on get up. You could have done it with Mike
- 27:03Speaker 1: Golick back in the day. But if you could only
- 27:06Speaker 1: use one utensil for the remainder of time, a fork,
- 27:10Speaker 1: a spoon, or a knife, which one is Mike Greenberg
- 27:14Speaker 1: going with? He likes that question.
- 27:17Speaker 3: I love that question.
- 27:18Speaker 1: This is exactly what he misses.
- 27:22Speaker 3: I'm assuming, not that I'm saying I would go with this,
- 27:26Speaker 3: I'm assuming that you cannot say a spork.
- 27:29Speaker 4: No.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Like they used to give you at Kentucky Fried Chicken? No.
- 27:32Speaker 3: That is a spoon with a fork with little forks
- 27:34Speaker 3: attached to it?
- 27:35Speaker 1: No hybrid situation here, okay? Just a fork, a spoon,
- 27:38Speaker 1: or a knife, you know? It's tough.
- 27:42Speaker 3: I think the most versatile of the three is the knife.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Because you can cut something and spear it to eat it. Now,
- 27:56Speaker 3: you're going to really struggle with soup. And I like soup.
- 28:00Speaker 1: So do I.
- 28:00Speaker 3: But I think the other thing about soup is that
- 28:03Speaker 3: it can be drunk without any utensil.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Correct.
- 28:07Speaker 3: I don't pour it that way, but it is conceivable.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Like you can't do that with a steak. I mean,
- 28:16Speaker 3: you can, but.
- 28:20Speaker 3: So I think the spoon is out. I think it's
- 28:23Speaker 3: definitely either the fork or the knife.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:26Speaker 3: The question is how effectively Because you could use the
- 28:28Speaker 3: fork for most soups too. Yes.
- 28:31Speaker 1: But what you're debating here is can the fork cut
- 28:33Speaker 1: as well as a knife? You can eat with a knife.
- 28:35Speaker 1: You can eat with a fork. But can the fork
- 28:37Speaker 1: cut as well as the knife can cut, right?
- 28:39Speaker 3: Well, it obviously can't cut as well as the knife
- 28:41Speaker 3: can cut. But can it cut passably well enough most
- 28:45Speaker 3: things that you'll still– otherwise what you're doing is if
- 28:49Speaker 3: you're eating like a steak or a large– like a
- 28:52Speaker 3: chicken breast or anything that is large, you're spearing it
- 28:55Speaker 3: with the fork if you can't get it to cut–
- 28:57Speaker 3: You're then picking it up to your mouth and you're,
- 28:59Speaker 3: you know, taking a bite off and putting it back down.
- 29:02Speaker 3: And you're most, let's put it this way. You better
- 29:06Speaker 3: be long married by that point because you will never
- 29:09Speaker 3: get a woman. You will never attract a woman doing that.
- 29:12Speaker 3: And early in a marriage, your wife will leave you
- 29:15Speaker 3: if you're doing that. Like you gotta be, you gotta
- 29:17Speaker 3: be committed beyond the point of return. Yes. That's why
- 29:21Speaker 3: I think I'm going knife because I think you can
- 29:23Speaker 3: still cut. Do you get multiple of them? So what
- 29:27Speaker 3: I'm saying is I can only have one denomination.
- 29:29Speaker 1: You get knives for life.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Unlimited knives.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Okay. Then you can hold something down with the knife. Oh, no.
- 29:36Speaker 1: You can only use one at a time. Only one
- 29:38Speaker 1: at a time. Yes. One knife at a time.
- 29:42Speaker 3: That was the question. You can only have one at
- 29:43Speaker 3: a time.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Only one at a time. Yeah.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:45Speaker 1: But you want a clean one. I know that. So
- 29:46Speaker 1: you can use a new one every time. That's all.
- 29:49Speaker 3: I think I'm going to go with the knife.
- 29:52Speaker 1: I think that's the right answer.
- 29:53Speaker 3: But I think it's a good question. You know what's
- 29:56Speaker 3: going to happen is I'm going to wake up in
- 29:57Speaker 3: the middle of the night and I'm going to teach myself.
- 30:02Speaker 1: If you go out to dinner with Stacey tonight and
- 30:04Speaker 1: drink the soup straight out of the bowl, is she
- 30:07Speaker 1: staying with you?
- 30:11Speaker 3: She's not here right now, but she'll find that funny.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Let's put it this way. She's almost 29 years into
- 30:17Speaker 3: this thing. But if I actually tonight at dinner were
- 30:20Speaker 3: to spear a chicken blessing, with a knife and just
- 30:23Speaker 3: start eating it like it was an ice cream cone.
- 30:27Speaker 3: There are not too many things that I think at
- 30:28Speaker 3: this point which you would consider a deal breaker, but
- 30:31Speaker 3: that might be it.
- 30:31Speaker 1: That's so good. All right, we'll get you out of
- 30:34Speaker 1: here in one minute. Again, congratulations on the 30th anniversary.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Mike Ie has to pick up his kids from school.
- 30:39Speaker 1: You are certainly familiar with those responsibilities. So one minute
- 30:44Speaker 1: on the state of the Jets, your mind, on the
- 30:47Speaker 1: Jets going into 2026. I, in particular, do not like
- 30:51Speaker 1: the amount of people who are telling me the Jets
- 30:52Speaker 1: are going to be good. Your thoughts?
- 30:55Speaker 3: Well, how are they defining good?
- 30:56Speaker 1: Well, the offense is good. They have weapons.
- 30:58Speaker 3: That's it.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Fun team to watch is what they're telling me.
- 31:02Speaker 3: I think they have a real chance to be decent.
- 31:10Speaker 3: I think that Apex is like seven or eight wins.
- 31:14Speaker 3: I think if anyone is telling you the Jets are
- 31:16Speaker 3: going to go 11-6, I would try and bet them
- 31:19Speaker 3: on almost anything that they're willing to bet you on.
- 31:23Speaker 3: But I do think I am not one of these
- 31:26Speaker 3: Jet fans.
- 31:26Speaker 4: I've got Jet fans who are like, the Jets.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Need to go 2-15 and get Arch and whatever else
- 31:33Speaker 3: it is. And I'm not one of those. I'm done
- 31:36Speaker 3: with that. I think they need, they have a bunch
- 31:39Speaker 3: of young players. The core of the team remains young
- 31:41Speaker 3: and talented. The two offensive tackles, Garrett Wilson, the two
- 31:45Speaker 3: tight ends. There's a bunch of young guys on this team.
- 31:49Speaker 3: They need to win. They need not to hate it.
- 31:52Speaker 3: They need not to think, God, this is a place
- 31:54Speaker 3: I need to get out of as quickly as possible.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Because then if you do draft Arch Manning or Dante
- 31:59Speaker 3: Moore or whoever it winds up being, you're just going
- 32:01Speaker 3: to ruin them like we've ruined guys before. I think
- 32:04Speaker 3: one of two things is going to happen. Either the
- 32:07Speaker 3: Jets are going to be way better than they were
- 32:09Speaker 3: last year. And that may not show itself in the records.
- 32:12Speaker 3: That might still be 6-11, but competitive in 15 out
- 32:16Speaker 3: of 17 games, which I think would be an enormous
- 32:19Speaker 3: step forward. Or what I'm a little worried about is
- 32:23Speaker 3: that Aaron Glenn really is not a good head coach,
- 32:25Speaker 3: which is an opinion that I found myself having many,
- 32:30Speaker 3: many times last year. In which case, this season will
- 32:35Speaker 3: go down in flames. The Jets will be bad. He'll
- 32:38Speaker 3: get fired. And then we'll see what happened. Now, where
- 32:41Speaker 3: did I see yesterday? I'm just sitting around minding my
- 32:44Speaker 3: own business. Where did I see yesterday something about Lamar
- 32:49Speaker 3: Jackson and Mike Tomlin?
- 32:50Speaker 5: Jason Locke and Forna.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Yeah, Mikey A sent it to me, and I wanted
- 32:54Speaker 1: to respond to him. Hey, can we get through this
- 32:56Speaker 1: season first before we focus on next season? But we're
- 32:59Speaker 1: Jet fans, and so we're always focused on the next season.
- 33:03Speaker 3: If you told me that could happen, then... Then I'd
- 33:09Speaker 3: sign up for whatever you wanted this year. I mean,
- 33:11Speaker 3: that would be like Lamar Jackson does not have it.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Everyone keeps saying like he'll sign a contract extension whenever
- 33:18Speaker 3: he decides to sign a contract extension. I think that
- 33:21Speaker 3: they have built everything around him in Baltimore now the
- 33:24Speaker 3: way he wants it. So I have to believe he's
- 33:27Speaker 3: going to stay.
- 33:28Speaker 4: If you told me that there was some world in
- 33:32Speaker 4: which the Jets could have Mike Tomlin as their coach
- 33:35Speaker 4: and Lamar Jackson as their quarterback next year, Well, that
- 33:40Speaker 4: would be a pretty good world.
- 33:41Speaker 3: So, I mean, I would do just about– I mean,
- 33:44Speaker 3: I would suffer through anything that you had to suffer
- 33:46Speaker 3: through to get to that regardless.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I mean, just suffer through one more bad season? Okay.
- 33:51Speaker 3: I've been suffering for 15 years. It wouldn't be that complicated.
- 33:57Speaker 3: 15 years ago. Think about how long ago 15 years
- 33:59Speaker 3: ago was. Yeah.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Well, how about 30?
- 34:01Speaker 3: That's the last time the Jets were in the playoffs.
- 34:05Speaker 1: I know.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Inc. Yes, you're right. What's one more year on top
- 34:12Speaker 3: of that, if we can get those guys, but I
- 34:14Speaker 3: think that that's probably a pipe dream on every level. Yes.
- 34:17Speaker 3: So I think that the best case scenario is that
- 34:21Speaker 3: we do show market improvement that Gino Smith does play
- 34:26Speaker 3: well enough that you actually get the weapons actually get
- 34:28Speaker 3: to sort of show off what they're capable of. They
- 34:31Speaker 3: win some games. They have three first-round picks next year.
- 34:35Speaker 3: If they want to get up high in the draft,
- 34:37Speaker 3: they will. There are going to be a lot of
- 34:39Speaker 3: quarterbacks in next year's draft. I would rather see them
- 34:42Speaker 3: win games and be competitive than tank and wind up
- 34:47Speaker 3: with the first pick.
- 34:48Speaker 1: All right. We appreciate you doing this. Congratulations on the
- 34:52Speaker 1: 30 years. I think a lot of people said this yesterday,
- 34:54Speaker 1: and I share their sentiments. You're the best we have
- 34:57Speaker 1: in this business, Greeny. Great host, even better person. And
- 35:01Speaker 1: that's the most important. So congratulations to you, sir.
- 35:04Speaker 4: Yes.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Thank you very much. From you, that means a lot.
- 35:06Speaker 3: Thank you. Yes.
- 35:07Speaker 1: I don't like anyone, Greeny. You know that.
- 35:09Speaker 3: No, I'm saying for you to say nice things about
- 35:13Speaker 3: me and not follow it up with a joke about yourself,
- 35:19Speaker 3: not about me, I think is the ultimate. So I
- 35:22Speaker 3: appreciate it. Yes.
- 35:23Speaker 1: You've been great to me. And I know you've been
- 35:25Speaker 1: great to many, many others. at ESPN, and we're all
- 35:28Speaker 1: grateful for it. So thank you, Gritty. Congratulations, man. This
- 35:31Speaker 1: was great.
- 35:31Speaker 3: It's good to see you guys.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Yes, always. Thank you, sir.
